Book review for the Fjord Herald?

2014-03-18 Thread Alice MacGillivray

Hello everyone. Thanks again for the inspiration, facts and stories that
contributed to the creation of "Riding Horseback in Purple." Several people
on this list are quoted or acknowledged or even behind or in front of the
camera.

I have a question. Most feedback on the book has been very positive, but has
generally been from people with quite a bit of horse experience. As many of
you know, the goal of the book is to help adults (adult women in particular)
decide whether they are really ready for a horse, and if so, how to prepare
well, find the right horse, and develop a solid, lasting relationship.

I was chatting with Teressa Kandianis about writing an article for the Herald,
and she is interested in getting a review of Riding Horseback in Purple for
the Herald by someone who is a relative beginner. Do you know someone who
might be willing (or perhaps some of you consider yourselves relative
beginners)? The paperback is available through Amazon.com (and many other
outlets) or I could arrange for a reviewer to get an e-copy if they've not
read it. If you do know someone, please check with them to see if they are
keen (rather than volunteering them!)

If you are experienced with horses and have found the book interesting or
valuable for yourself or clients, there are lots of other venues for reviews
such as newsletters or online distributors such as Amazon.

Thank you everyone!

Alice - I LOVED the book, my only complaint is that it was too short! Yes,
lots of wonderful information for first time horse owners. Now, the only
thing is how to get your book into their hands!

Have you contacted any of the horse publications here in the US, such as
Horse & Rider, Equus, Horse Illustrated, etc.? It would be great if they
were willing to do a small blurb on the book.

Thanks again for a wonderful read!

Thanks for your input to my book

2014-03-03 Thread Alice MacGillivray
This message is from: Alice MacGillivray

I know I've thanked some of you, but I wanted to post a thank you to the
community as a whole, and mention some of the folks on the acknowledgements
page of Riding Horseback in Purple: Re-awakening the Dream of Owning a Horse."
Ellen Barry, Wendy Bauwens, Robin Churchill, Phil Odden, Yvonne Olson, June
Mendoza Wheeler, Mel Raven, Corinne Logan and Pat Wolfe are just a few of the
"Fjord people" mentioned in the book, and MANY others had input. Thank you so
much!

The way the book unfolded, it seems to be valuable for three groups of people.
It is written for women who are considering their first horse (or first horse
in a long time) in the hope that they will find the right horse at the right
time for a healthy, long-term relationship. The other two groups benefitting
are groups that are recommending the book to their clients. Sadly, many of
the rescue organization managers I spoke with said rescues are too often
temporary. Even when they work hard to match women and horses, the women
aren't always as prepared as they hoped, and the human-horse relationships
don't last. Similarly, some breeders, trainers and coaches want their clients
to have a solid foundation and become lifelong learners.

It has been interesting to hear from experienced friends who have read the
book. Of course a lot of the content was extremely basic for them. But that
reminded them how much they have learned over the decades. It really is
difficult, some of them have said, to put themselves in the shoes of
beginners. Fortunately, I haven't found it difficult to do that!

The book should be available now everywhere from Amazon to the local bookstore
(though you'll probably need to ask in smaller outlets). I am also trying to
keep this site current with updates: http://ridinghorsebackinpurple.com/

Have fun with your Fjords. Here in western Canada (not far from Seattle) I am
looking forward to the end of the mud season!

Hello everyone. As most of you know, I have been working on a book over

many of you have helped me with specific questions and learning.
Collectively, you have been a huge inspiration. I have only met a couple

I have sold all the books that I plan on selling. If you are one of the first
25 to donate more than $55 to the Rose Parade Donations, you will receive a
copy of the book, "Blakely", the Norwegian Fjord Pony. This is easy to do, go
to NFHR.com, you will be directed from there.

Thank you to all who purchased our book. It was a fun piece of work, by two
Grandmas.

You may follow Blakely by watching for future Starfire Farm Quadrille events.
Blakely is one of the stars :) .

Again thank you all.

Hi everyone. Jo Wilgus here again.

As you may know, my girlfriend and i have written a children's
book, titled
"Blakely", the Norwegian Fjord Pony. It is a cute little book which
was
written with our Grandchildren in mind. It seems to be a hit with
them. My son

said he has read it to my Grandson (age 3) about 50 times. hee, hee.
Debi says her Grandson took it to school on share day. Debi has
read it to her

Grandkids probably 1000 times. All good news.

Blakely is my mare's (Bryhyl Regn) foal and his sire is Obelisk ( Beth
Beymer). Blakely has gone on to do many fun events with his owner
Christi
Kipple. Most recently the Starfire Farm Quadrille at the Denver
Stock Show.

WOW!

I have placed the book on ebay and i have set up a pay-pal account
( thank you
steve). The link is below. I hope you all will take a look. Even
better,
place an order. It is a sweet and simple book, written with love
and pride for

the Fjord Horse.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

owned by Garrison Keillor, http://commongoodbooks.com). The store is
donating 10% of all sales and I "think" they would also honor the donation
if you called and ordered a book via phone! The other book signing will be
at Borders by the Ridgedale Mall on October 10th at 2pm.

Wish I could have Viola with me and it's nice to share with more readers who
may have never known such a spectacular breed!

I've got a copy of GaWaNi Pony Boy's book and it's full of sensible and
useful horse tips. The only thing that he makes sound easy (but isn't) is his
description of how to mount your horse bareback. I get it intellectually - I
understand the moves, their order and their rhythm - I just can't actually DO
it.
I think it helps to be slender, in your twenties and male (what weight they
have is in their upper body). Bareback mounting is a lot harder when you're
built like a pear...a chubby pear.
But the book is a really good read.

never going to have to leave the barn."

Hello All,

Anyone out there a book fan? Canyonville Feed and Ranch Supply in
Canyonville has listed three books on Ebay for sale and the starting price
is way below cost. One is GaWaNi Pony Boy's book, the other is a John Lyons
Book and the third is a how to build a horse barn book with several ideas
and layouts. All are new books. They just have been sitting on the shelves
at the store for a while and the owner is now using Ebay to sell off items
that have not sold. The Ebay user name is "FeedRanchGuy". It is a new
account so there is not any feedback for him yet, but he is a business and
the books are real and new.

Thanks for reading.

Fjord Art Wanted for Book

This message is from: "Vanessa N. Weber" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi All,

William Secord, an expert in animal art, is looking for paintings of horses
that were done before 1950. He is looking for 'portraits', and doesn't want
them of horses doing anything (i.e. driving, jumping, hunting etc).

If anyone has any high quality paintings, or portraits of a Fjord, which
might fit this description, you might want to let Bill know. He's doing a
book of horse portraits and would love to have Fjord(s) included.

He has done 3 books on dog art so far, and they've been very well received.
He used to be the director of the AKC Dog Museum, and he runs a first class
gallery of dog and horse art in New York City.

For more information, feel free to contact me. I'd be happy to look at
anything you might have a photo of, if you would like to run it by me first.

Otherwise, contact William Secord directly at:

Hi all,

First, I want to congratulate Brian and Ursula for importing these quality
Fjords from Germany. They will play a significant part in continuing to
improve the breed and the breed's gene pool. Way to go!

Also, as some of you know, I'm working on a book. It's full of witty and
sparkling humor about what happens when a middle-aged woman [me], encounters
the realities of horsekeeping [them.] Cross your fingers about the witty and
sparkling part...

We have put up the draft of a new web site for "Midlife Madness - Setting up
Horsekeeping." You should be able to find it at www.horsehumor.net . I would
love to have comments, preferably enthusiastically positive, from any of you
who would care to respond. Yes, you won't be disappointed - my stallion will
occasionally show up in my writing

I have enjoyed reading about all of your adventures in the snow and ice. We
had a couple of power outages, the longer being 4 1/2 days. We coped with
generator, gas fireplace, running water [we're not on a well now], and our
Coleman stove. Aren't we hardy, though? Our 6 inches of snow is gone. We're
currently enjoying some sunshine while waiting for the Spring Deluges to
appear.

There's hope - the days are getting longer.

6 to 7 years. I will include pictures, stories, poems, etc. If I could get
any of you who came and cooked at these events just send me the recipe's and

should be under $20. I will publish, bind and print it myself. Over the

Fwd: The USDF Guide to Dressage book release announced

Subject: The USDF Guide to Dressage book release announced
  Date: Thu, 9 Mar 2006 14:15:30 -0500

  For Immediate Release

  March 9, 2006

The USDF Guide to Dressage book release announced

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce
the release of The USDF Guide to Dressage. USDF has partnered with
author Jennifer O. Bryant and Storey Publishing in order to bring
dressage to a wider audience. The book will give greater
opportunities to interest individuals in the sport of dressage.

"This is a wonderful book that 'opens the door,' allowing many to
enter and experience the world of dressage," USDF Vice President
George Williams comments in the foreward of the book.

Assuming no prior knowledge of the sport, The USDF Guide to Dressage
leads riders through the training scale and a full course of
exercises, from pre-Introductory to Second Level. The book is
illustrated with easy-to-follow photographic sequences, all presented
in full color and demonstrated by respected riders, competitors, and
  USDF-certified dressage instructors.

This authoritative guide includes the dramatic and colorful history
of dressage, an overview of proper terminology and equipment, as well
as information on competition, cross-training for other disciplines,
management of the dressage horse, rider fitness, and more.

Dressage is an intricate ballet of athleticism and grace, demanding
precise movement and excellent communication between horse and rider,
is particularly appealing to the growing group of “Baby Boomer”
riders who are looking for opportunities to expand their riding
skills and knowledge without the physical challenges and risks
involved in jumping and racing. Whether they’ve been in the saddle
for years or are just taking up or renewing their riding practice,
these eager riders will find The USDF Guide to Dressage key to
building a more satisfying relationship with their horses.

Books will be available April 17, 2006 and can be pre-ordered through
the USDF merchandise department at (859) 271-7892.

  (author bio)

Jennifer O. Bryant is the editor of USDF Connection, the member
magazine of the United States Dressage Federation. She is the author
of Olympic Equestrian: The Sports and the Stories from Stockholm to
Sydney and co-author of A Gymnastic Riding System Using Mind, Body &
Spirit. A longtime dressage rider and horse owner, she has competed
through the FEI levels and is a USDF bronze and silver medalist.

Founded in 1973, the United States Dressage Federation is a nonprofit

achievement, and the promotion of the sport of dressage. For more

Reply to Larry - new book

This message is from: "Catherine lassesen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Larry,

As normal the new book is in "new" Norwegian.

My hope with the Norwegian Fjord Horse Foundation is to raise enough funds
in the Educational Endowment to give a grant to have some of the books
translated into English.

I ask that any of you that are interested in translations of books to
consider a donation to this Endowment fund. I have spoken to the authors of
some of the popular books and they are willing to give permission (of course
with a contact and compensation of sales) to the Foundation for translation.
It is a matter of up front money to translate and then the sales of the
English books would benefit the Foundation and (of course) the author.

---

My dear husband did some translations of a book called "Horses in Norway"
(for me)... if I get permission from the author... we will publish for the
English speaking Fjord owners. There is great history about the horses in
Norway in this book. It includes Fjords but it is not a fjord book, it is a
horse book.

Thanks for your question.

Re: The Evaluation Book on NFHR website

2005-12-10 Thread Beaver Dam Farm

This message is from: "Beaver Dam Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hello from Carol Rivoire at Beaver Dam Farm in Nova Scotia

We had our first snowfall last night. Only about 4", but heavy so the
power went out for about 8 hours. It didn't bother us much as we have the
woodstove in the house, and all the horse's tanks were filled and the temp.
stayed just above freezing.

It being a snowy day today, I spent the morning on the computer and looked
at the NFHR website to see what's new. -- The Evaluation Committee's
excellent work, "The Evaluation Handbook" was new -- New to me anyway. I
hadn't seen it. -- Frankly, I was very impressed. It's a good piece of
work. Overall, I liked it a lot. There was one thing, however, that bugged
me, and has bugged me in the Breed Standards for many a year now, but no
matter how much I griped about it, nothing has changed. --

What I don't like and what I think is misleading and inadequate is the
description of what the Evaluators are looking for when a Fjordhorse is
trotted out for them.

First of all is the description of the trot

The Evaluation Handbook says the trot is . . . "A true two-beat gait. Being
a powerful gait, the trot demonstrates the characteristic traits of speed,
comfort and athletic ability. The trot comes naturally and is the most
favored gait of the horse."

I honestly think this is an inadequate description and should be
evised. -- The trot should be "a powerful gait", but NOT necessarily a
speedy gait. -- In my opinion, the trot should clearly show the power of
the horse's hindquarters in the way he thrusts forward . . . The way he
propels the movement forward. -- It does not need to be fast. It does
need to be powerful and forward. -- Forward is not necessarily fast. -- I
think this part is very unclear, and would lead some people who do not
understand horse movement to simply push their horses for speed.

And, I'm sorry, but I don't understand the reference to "COMFORT". I guess
it means that the horse should be comfortable to sit to at the trot. --
Yes, this is great, but sometimes a big mover who is a very correct and very
good mover is not comfortable to sit to. Not because he's jarring and
rough, but simply because he has a very big stride. -- This is the case
with some big moving Warmbloods, and there are some Fjords who have this
same kind of movement.

The last thing that I object to is the mention of "EXTRAVAGANT MOVEMENT"
being undesirable. I find this in two places in the Handbook. -- What
exactly does the Handbook mean by "extravagant movement."? -- In the
beginning of the handbook, the writers explain how breed type and overall
conformation is most important, and that "extravagant movement" (they also
mention beauty and elegance) should never override the importance of type
and conformation. -- I totally agree with this! I agree that no one thing
such as a beautiful head, or a huge trot should ever override the importance
placed on overall quality and breed type.

However, further on in the Handbook where the writers list UNDESIRABLE
TRAITS, they again list "extravagant movement". -- I wish somebody would
tell me what is meant by this.

* Does it mean high knee action like a Hackney, Saddlebred, or Morgan? --
If that's what it means, then I agree. Fjords should not move with high
knee action. This is a big fault. Fjords should move like Warmbloods with
a long, reaching stride. --- If the Evaluation Committee means high knee
action when they speak of "extravagant movement", then they should say it
like that. HIGH KNEE ACTION is a fault in Fjords.

* Does extravagant movement mean a horse capable of giving a big extension
at the trot? -- If that's what the Handbook means then, I beg to differ
most vociferously. -- But, again, I do agree that a Fjord with a big
extension at the trot should not be forgiven for lack of "breed type" or
faults of conformation.

The thing is that if a Fjord is capable of doing a big extended trot, and he
has all the other qualities . . . . What I want to know is if such a
orse --with all the other desirable qualities -- is going to get marked
down because he has a big extended trot? -- Is it a fault? -- I sure
hope not!

I hope the Evaluation Committee can answer this for me.

And I also hope that they will revise the Handbook in this regard to make
the issue clearer for everybody.

Kind Regards, Carol Rivoire

We have had a few days to go through Vol 2 of the Record Book and work with
the scores and accomplishments of some of these fine horses. As stated in
the intro there are 7 Fjords who have attained S1 G1 status which is the
highest possible award in the NFHR Evaluation program. These horses have
been evaluated for Conformation and have gone through both the Introductory
and Advanced levels in all three disciplines.

I'm happy to say that Penfrydd's Raynor has the highest average performance
scores in the Advanced tests (English riding, Driving and Draft) That makes
us happy and coinsidering the amount of energy , time and cost involved, it
is a wonderful accomplishment for him and us. Probably by the time the next
book comes out many more horses will have reached that level so I would love
to see a page highlighting those horses.
Since Versatility is the Hallmark of the Breed these animals have certainly
proven that, .

I'm glad others are enjoying this book as much as we are. There is nothing
like having a tangible in-hand book to curl up with. No computer screen can
compare. Books are still the best (IMO)

Thanks a million to Sandy North for her determination and hard work to
undertake the huge project of
Record Book II. The Evaluation Committee and the BOD oversee this project
but I can tell you that Sandy single handedly
inputted every photo and score. Sandy researched printing companies to find
the best at a reasonable price and prepared all the copy for them. After
much research, Phillip Odden wrote the informative article on the History of
The Fjord. Ann Sullivan was the main proofreader with some help from
Catherine Lassesen and Lisa McGinley. Mike May provided the original data
and answered a zillion questions. Beth Beymer and Sue North, Sandy's Mom,
helped with data checking and proofing all thru the process.

Without volunteers like Sandy North, the NFHR would not be what it is today!
Hope you ordered your copy, enjoy it and tell Sandy Thank You!

This message is from: "David McWethy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

My book, now named "Blessings of the Open Road: A Journey Across America by
Horses and Wagon" is now complete. I had set myself a deadline of last
night, prior to heading this morning to New Mexico (with some books in
hand). It is printed on CD, in PDF format, which should be readable or
printable on almost all computers. Producing it this way allowed for lots
of pictures, perhaps as many as 200, and the book runs over 400 pages.

Last night I was printing it on my computer, thinking of the ghost of Johann
Gutenberg watching over my shoulder, marvelling with me at the technology.
When I started my wagon trip, eleven and a half years ago, I encountered
more than a few people who hadn't seen a computer, much less my state of the
art black and white, small screen laptop. Email, which I used then for the
first time, was beyond imagining. So for this book to appear in this form
follows from sophisticated technological origins! How could I have more
been out of the present, to be ahead of my time and so far behind, traveling
with horses!

When I return next week I will start to ship copies to those who have
prepaid, and to any other of us technological pioneers who can understand a
book in this form. When I return, I can accept MC or Visa, or a check to:
Camptown Harness, P O Box 255, Acworth NH 03601. The book is $15 plus $2.50
shipping and handling.

I look forward to the brutal world of reviews

Re: Norwegian Perspectives on Type - Exerpts from FHI book - Long

2005-02-12 Thread starfirefarm
are
extremely important and should be carefully assessed, as they are the bridge
between the mid-section and the hindquarters. The transition between the
loin and the croup should be flexible and blend smoothly together. The
length of the coupling/loin should be short, yet strong and proportional to
the back and the croup.

The Hindquarters: The croup should be long, broad, well muscled and
sloping. Too sloping or too flat are not desirable. The tail should not be
set on too high or too low and it should be carried freely and naturally.
The thighs should be sufficiently long, well muscled seen both from the side
and from behind, and should be set as wide as the quarters.

Legs: The forearm should be broad and well muscled. In the hind legs the
thigh and gaskin muscling should be long and well developed as seen both
from the side and from behind. Too long a gaskin is considered a drawback
for a draught horse. The legs should be correctly aligned and with adequate
bone. The joints and tendons must be clearly defined and dry. A short and
firm cannon bone is desired. The cannon bones ought to be clean and dry,
and should not be tied below the knee.

The knee (carpal joint) should be large and well defined.
The hock joint should be large, well developed and dry. Small ill defined
hocks are not suitable for the breed. The point of the hock must be
prominent when viewed from the side. Too straight or bowed hocks are
objectionable.

The fetlock joints should be strong and well defined.
The pasterns should be strong and sufficiently long and sloping to give
adequate support and elasticity. The hooves of the Fjord Horse should be
well balanced and proportionately round and large, with good horse quality,
the inside of the hoof wall may be slightly steeper than the outside. Good
sound hooves are extremely important for the horse.

The movements are particularly important for the horse, and must reflect the
conformation in sufficient elasticity and impulsion to perform an effortless
walk, trot and canter. The movements should be energetic, with good balance
and cadence. The Fjord Horse must move freely in all three gaits. The
canter should be balanced and free with supple and elastic forward movement.
The trot shall be energetic, however excessive action is considered not
typical for the breed.

Gender characteristics: The Fjord Horse should have distinct gender
characteristics; the stallion should be masculine and the mare feminine.

***
There is much more information in this book regarding the history, colors
and conformation of the Fjord Horse, but I thought I'd share part of the
"Vision" or mission statement, if you will, of this particular FHI project:

***
Maintaining and developing the Fjord Horse breed internationally requires a
universal definition of the breeding goal as well as a mutual understanding
of the evaluation process.
The Fjord Horse breed has found supporters and enthusiasts around the world.
This handbook can promote closer contact between persons and organisations,
provide better education and training and assist in establishing
international standards. Through the Fjord Horse International's Judges
Commission, organisations and persons involved in evaluation, judging and
breeding Fjords, have cooperated and contributed to this book, as all member
countries realise there must be a common system of procedures and rules for
evaluations...

...The members of the FHI Judges' Commission who collected and edited the
contents of this handbook have contributed their services to Norges
Fjordhestlag and all members of FHI, for the sole purpose of promoting the
Fjord Horse. We must recognise that breeding and judging horses is a
dynamic process with the potential for change over a period of time, yet the
core standards for the Fjord Horse breed must always be maintained and used
as a guide to further development.

The Fjord Horse is to be found all over the world. Norges Fjordhestlag is
in charge of the Mother Studbook and has overall responsibility for the
breed. Due to its global distribution, Norges Fjordhestlag, Norsk
Hestesenter and Fjord Horse International are increasingly responsible for
keeping the balance between preserving the breed and improving the
procedures for the breeding and judging/evaluation of Fjord Horses. An
overall goal will be closed Stud Books for Fjord Horses in all countries.

I think adding the online format for results would be very timely.
Once the format is coded it is easy to add updates and would be much
quicker than publishing a book. The hard copies are wonderful
resources, but because you have to do printings they are always
limited in numbers and hard to decide when to reprint. An online

New Record Book

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It was great reading that the new Record Book might be coming out this year.
May I make a suggestion since the cost seems to be driving the print run. I
would be very happy to buy an electronic book versus hard copy. While I
realize that the Record Book is heavy on the graphics, it still is going to be
generated as an electronic file in order to be printed anyway.

Many large government publications are now available in electronic form
because of printing costs. Obviously this is a useful document, but wouldn't
it be
nice to have a choice of format? An electronic record book would also be
quite easy for the NFHR to sell in future years when the printed stock is gone.

I hope this option will be offered.

The process for ordering is just now being worked out -- so, keep your
checkbook handy and poised for that information. Mostly, I wanted to let
folks know the current scheduling thoughts and the fact that the book IS
coming, and relatively soon. A little lead time might allow some folks to
put aside a few $$$ now and not be caught by surprise when the ordering
starts. If it is a pre-order only printing then there will be a relatively
short window for orders if we go to print in late Spring/early Summer.

Record Book II

2005-01-24 Thread starfirefarm
This message is from: "starfirefarm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all,

I generally work behind the scenes and don't follow the list much. Beth does
that for us -- but she mentioned that the Record Book was a topic of
discussion so I've read a few posts and thought this might be a good time for
me to jump in for a quick word.

First -- for the folks that only make it to the first paragraph of these
emails...
Please -- SUPPORT THE PROJECT BY BUYING A RECORD BOOK ...or
two, or three !

When the Record Book II was undertaken, the BOD said it would support the
project but that it would only print the number of books that were
pre-ordered. If they stick to that, be sure you don't miss out I don't
think the ordering process has been worked out yet -- as soon as it has, I'll
make sure someone puts that info to the list. If the sales are strong, then
there will be more support for upcoming Record Books and if the economics are
favorable, I think the books could be printed more frequently. The 4 year wait
was due more to economics than an inability to get the data together into a
book format. I personally feel very strongly about having a professionally
printed version of the data. I also support an on-line format and would like
to see the data integrated with the pedigree site (I've even offered to help
with that effort). Perhaps we can figure out a way to provide earlier results
on-line and then follow up with a printed version every 3-4 years.

I sure appreciate all the support I hear for the Record Book II. Wait until
you see it! The photography in this book is much better because each
evaluation hired someone to take conformation shots of each horse. A good
picture often allows you to see the conformation of the horse better than some
of the more amateur shots we had last time around. There is just a wealth of
information -- you'll be able to follow many horses as they progress through
their performance tests. There are a small number of horses who have achieved
the highest performance rating possible (S1 G1) -- all of it is documented for
your browsing pleasure!!

And... contrary to popular belief, I am not doing this by myself. I admit I
am at the center of the effort because I am doing the book layout and am
entering the data from all the evaluations. But... Artilces are being written
by members of the Evaluation Committee, Mike May has provided invaluable
support in my quest for the most accurate data possible (though, mistakes are
bound to happen), Sophie Fiedler has helped coordiate the entire effort and
most recently, Ann Sullivan of Connecticut stepped up and volunteered to help
with the proof reading. So, as with the last edition, this is really very much
a team effort.

The goal is to have something ready for print in late Spring and with any luck
in folks hands by early to mid-summer. The articles are still being written
and I haven't quire finished entering the 2004 evaluation data. As was
mentioned earlier, the book does cover 12 evaluations from 2001 to 2004 and
should be close to 200 pages -- which is twice as many as the first record
book.

We're all working very hard to get this book into your hands. As the risk of
being redundant --

PLEASE, SUPPORT THE PROJECT -- these books make great gifts and you might
want to buy two in case your first one gets worn out. I'll bet there are more
than a few of the first Record Book that are a bit well-worn, eh? And
Don't wait for a Second Printing -- it's a miracle that there is even a First
Printing.

Sandy

Pedigree Search, Record book, Stallion Prevalence

2005-01-23 Thread Green Valley Farm
This message is from: "Green Valley Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

In regard to stallion prevalence, to date there have been 18 NFHR
Evaluations since 1994. I believe more than 60 stallions have been
evaluated receiving red and blue ribbons for conformation. There are also
imported stallions who have received their breeding license from Denmark,
Holland, and Norway. The 2003 NFHR stallion report lists 108 breeding
stallions of which 28 are AI licensed. Any of these stallions could be
looked up on the NFHR pedigree search to see how many offspring they have.
This says nothing of quality but it is interesting to see the numbers. We
are thankful to Lori Albrough for developing the pedigree search. The
Evaluation Committee hopes to one day have the evaluation scores as part off
this program which would be readily available and could be updated in a
timely manner.

Having your mare evaluated gives you an unbiased list of her strengths and
weaknesses. Breeding to an evaluated stallion or a licensed stallion you
will know his strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully any offspring are at least
as good as it's dam and sire. There are many more issues to consider but
this is a good start. In the Fjord Digest #019, Carol Rivoire talked about
the Dutch Studbook and how they measure the character and
attitude (temperament) of a horse through the performance tests.
This is also true with the NFHR Evaluation Performance tests.

Record Book I is a wonderful tool to see pictures and scores of the
evaluated fjords. Sandy North deserves a gold medallion for all of her
single handed work on Record Book II which will be completed in the near
future. This book will cover 12 evaluations and have great articles on how
to use the scores for breeding. This knowledge can also be useful for
purchasing a horse. The articles on color and youngstock should be of
interest to all. Hopefully many of you will want to purchase the Record
Books as a documentary of some of the best fjords in America. Mike May has
a few copies of Record Book I still available.

I just received a packet from Birgit Mortensen who is Secretary of
Fjordhesteavlen i Danmark. What a wealth of information! It includes
the new stallion guide and 2 small books about the Danish index-figures
covering evaluated mares who have been active since 1990 and another
with stallions and foals born in 2004, Stallion testing scores and a
Danish Fjord Magazine.. The Fjordhorse Association in Denmark has an

"Hey Ruthie,

Did you have any of your Fjords evaluated this year? And have you had them
evaluated in previous evaluations? I sue wish we could get the latest
Evaluation results..When I bought the book I understood that it was to be
added to with each subsequent evaluation. It sure would be nice to be able
to see ALL the results shortly after the evaluations are finished!"<<

It would be nice to have the results immediately. Unfortunately (as usual)
there have been some glitches along the way. Sandy North is currently hard
at work (burning the midnight oil after her regular job and on weekends)
entering the final data for the the next Record Book, then there is proofing
and it will be off to the printers. This next RB will contain data from all
of the evaluations since 2000. If I counted correctly, it will include 12
evaluations. Plenty to compare, along with the initial RB. There also
continues to be talk about publishing the data on-line and working out the
details along those lines.

If we were a large enough organization, such as the AQHA, or the APHA, or
whatever, we might be able to hire a full staff to ensure these things get
done, but comparatively speaking, our membership is quite small and we still
have to rely on volunteers to get a lot of the work done. Along the way,
communication can become stymied for one reason or another.

Like the lack of communication/information passed along about changes in the
evaluation procedures that Margaret Bogie was talking about (I'm not sure
what specifically she was talking about, but I know that some changes had
been made) the NFHR can always work towards better communication (whether it
be concerning evaluations, or publishing the meeting minutes on-line in an
appropriate time frame.) I know that these are issues that the NFHR Board
of Directors have taken on during their recent face-to-face meeting. I,
like you, am looking forward to seeing the results of the meeting published.

Barb Lee's Book

Jean in Faibanks, Alaska

>From Barb Lee, Mon, 7 Jun 2004

Lots of you know me as the "mad scientist" of harnessing, and have put up
with my theories and progress reports as my "partner in crime," Rob Johnson
in Australia and I have worked together at optimizing harnessing methods
and techniques.

Well, the sum of our experience of working together for six years on
"balanced draft" is finally available in a slim new volume of about 60
pages entitled "Balanced Draft - Breast Collars - Neck Collars".

This book is not like any other book available on harnessing, to my
knowledge. It collects information that is sometimes only identifiable as
"gut level understanding" from the past as well as the present, and
articulates it all in one place, perhaps for the first time. It explains
firstly the urgency of harnessing the horse to the vehicle so that he is in
balance with his equipment, as a saddle horse must be in balance with his
rider to achieve optimal comfort and performance. This philosophy is called
"Balanced Draft." It explores the history of how we came to understand
Balanced Draft, how we researched and tested it to prove it to ourselves,
and how to easily identify Balanced Draft when it is achieved. The rest of
the book is devoted to dispelling the myths and mysteries of selecting a
breast collar or a neck collar, how each is correctly paired to a vehicle
based on performance and comfort as opposed to "turnout", and how each
affects the horse's locomotion. It examines the whys and wherefores of some
vehicle types and how they are either limited or appropriate in their
intended use. Finally, there is a section on fitting neck collars and hames.

The text has been examined by experts in the field of equine locomotion and
draft, for both editorial appeal and fundamental accuracy and the sentiment
has been "this needs to be out there."

There are lots of photos and illustrations and the text is in very plain,
non-technical language.

Chimacum Tack/Barb Lee book

2005-01-04 Thread David McWethy

This message is from: "David McWethy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I'll add a word about Chimacum Tack. In my visit to Washington in December
I finally met Janey Amdal, of Chimacum. We had talked on the phone before,
and she had given me some excellent leads for things that were helpful while
I was there, including the realtor who was terrific.

I now count Janey as a good friend, and in addition, we will be working
together on some aspects of harness. Janey primarily sells harness at the
extremes, for draft and for minis. We have made an agreement that she will
take over the selling of Camptown Harness for equines under 12 hands. I
have done this because she is already more involved in minis than I am, and
I know from her reputation and from talking to her, that she will do an
excellent job representing this harness. I will continue to sell our
harness for the large pony and horse sizes.

I recommend also that you contact Janey about Old Mac shoes, which she
stocks. Her website is www.tinytac.com

About Barb Lee's book. It will be the definitive work on harnessing in
order to have the proper line of draft from collar or breast collar to
singletree. If you are serious about driving and haven't read it, I
recommend getting it or talking to someone who has read it to explain the
concept.

This message is from: "Ron & Sherrie Dayton" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Thanks to all who have responded so favorably to our project. We are really
looking forward to it. We had a number of thoughts, questions and concerns
we hope to clarify early on. The book is a Non-profit venture. There is NO
charge for the two pages. The book will be in color. There will be NO
advertising. Each farm will have two pages, one for text and one for
photo's. Farm name is okay. We hope to have as many farms represented as
we can get from North America and some from overseas as well to show how the
Fjord Horse is used in many venues and climates, working, playing or just as
back yard pets! What-ever,. The cost of the book should be under $ 20. It
will have a spiral binding so it will lay flat like a cook book. Each turn
of the page will show a new farm. Send us your text and photo's on CD or
attachment to E=mail or just send the originals. You can format your pages
(camera ready) (print ready) or we can format it for you. What we thought
would look nice is to have a large photo of your farm in the background with
some text over the top with your family and Fjords in the foreground. You
can show your equipment, carts, wagons, farm hitch etc. Use your
imagination and think about how you want others to view your farm , family,
and Fjords, Be creative and if you need help let us know. This a big
project and it may take up to two years so give it some thought and what
ever you come up with, we REALLY appreciate your support. "Happy Trails to
you all" Ron & Sherrie

Howdy Friends, just a short note to let those in the Fjord community know
that Sherrie & I are about to undertake a big project and we need your help.
In the next year or so we intend to create a book of Fjord Farms, we are
calling it "Fjords, Farms and Friends" It will contain, at each turn of a
page, a farm with information and photos depicting the Fjord horse in many
settings from across North America and some from overseas. The idea of the
book has been on our minds for a few years now and we want to include as many
farms as we can. The main focus of the book will be to inform and entertain
you and not to be used as an advertising tool for any one farm. This is a
non-profit undertaking and the cost of the finished book will be only enough
to cover expenses. If you are interested in listing your farm in the book
contact us for more information and we will be glad to include your farm. We
will have farms of the past and we are now looking for old photos and text for
this. The book may take up to two years to complete so there is no real
hurry, we just want to do a good job with it and provide a book that can be
handed down to your family members. Thank you for your time, Happy Trails,

Hi all -

"The Crystal Ball of Equine Color - a precalculated reference guide to over
400 coat color crosses," is finally available. Here's what the publisher says
about it -
"The Crystal Ball of Equine Color is an easy-to-read, simplified text for
expert horsemen and novices alike. It is designed to be an invaluable
reference tool for fingertip management when breeding for color. Hundreds of
hours of genetic mapping are already done for you while genetic nomenclature
is kept to a minimum. It does not assume a firm understanding of genetic
principles and competency in mapping conclusions in the reader. By following a
few easy steps, you will find yourself amid clear answers to coat color
crosses rather than a deluge of more questions." The author is Jim C. Hembree,
B.S.

Since I have not seen the book yet, I can't personally recommend it, but when
I spoke with the author he seemed quite knowledgeable. At $39.95, it is
pricey, but it does, after all, have a picture of our yellow dun filly, OH
Yenna, in it, so it must be special You can find it at
www.circlehpublishing.com . I will give a review after I see it.

Otherwise, we are having our usual Spring around here, sunny, windy, or both.
This is, of course, Erlend's favorite season, and he appreciates our having
built a special room in our barn just for AI work. Pretty fancy! We even got a
nice piece of grey carpet to cover Tushy with. Cushy Tushy

I guess I will also share an annoying experience I had the other at the
McDonald's drive-thru window. I ordered a small black coffee and was told I
would have to pay 99cents at the window. When I got there, she took one look
at me and said, brightly, "Oh, it's only 50 cents for seniors" How rude!

Grüßen aus Lindenfels in der Odenwald where we have been having a
glorious Frühling (spring) for the last 2 weeks! Peg, I was very sorry to
hear about the loss of your foal, but was glad to hear Sadie is
recovering.  We lost a beautiful Morgan foal to wobbler foal syndrome
less than 12 hours after he hit the ground some years ago and I know how
it feels.  My thoughts and prayers are with you. Linda Wollowitz, I would
be interested in seeing a picture of your Norwegian saddle.  Would it be
possible for you to privately e-mail me a photo? Gail Russell, that book
on e-bay made me homesick.  I grew up with a Norwegian mother and a
German father in a Norwegian Lutheran church and once a year we had a big
dinner and all of the immigrant parishioners wore their national dress.
I can't recall which was better, the food or the company!  Both were
outstanding. Jean Gayle, that book you recommended sounds interesting.  I
will try to find it in the USAREUR library system. I saw the orthopedic
surgeon Tuesday.  He took x-rays and said I have severe arthrosis,
narrowing of the joint interspaces, and showed me a place on each knee
and ankle where the narrowing is especially severea with almost no space
between the joints at that point.  It is aggravated by walking and
standing.  Since I moved, I was doing alot more walking and standing in
my apartment, packing before and then unpacking, which is what triggered
the acute exacerbation.  Fortunately, since this is an arthritic
condition, I do not need any type of surgery, but need to stay down more
(very boring). When I go out, I wear knee braces.   I still do not have
the pain under enough control to try to start riding Ricka.  I
desperately need to get well enough to start riding as the exercise would
be good for my overall physical condition and, as we all know, riding is
fun and relaxing and thus beneficial.  I have an old McClellan saddle (an
original, antique US Army issue made in 1909 at the Rock Island Arsenal),
so I can ride without my feet in the stirrups if having my feet in the
stirrups aggravates the knee and ankle pain.  Or I can always ride
bareback.  Ricka's a good, calm Fjord with a nice wide back, so she's
very suitable for bareback.  I have come to the definite conclusion that
I won't be able to show her.  If I want her shown, I will ask Herr
Wolbert to recruit a teenager to show her for me in western pleasure. Linda

van Bon book/mounted games

2003-01-22 Thread Lynn Binkowski
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Lynn Binkowski)

Folks talking about van Bon's book reminded me of a photo in the book
that has always intrigued me. On page 149 there is a photo of a group
of riders on fjords playing some sort of game with a HUGE ball...the
ball comes up to the fjords' chests in diameter! Does anyone know what
this is all about? Do the riders kick the ball? Or do the fjords!?
Looks like a lot of fun...

Hi Carol Rivoire,
Do I see your name on this book? I finally was able
to open my Christmas present, your "The Fjordhorse
Handbook". I am currently half way through it and by
far that is a lot of reading for me. There are times
that I can't put it down. I find myself agreeing with
some things you've written that I already knew about
and learning about other things I've never even
thought about. Just love that book and figure if you
can do it, a book on training would be another
excellent book to add to your selection of writings.
I read all you post and always find that I can learn
to look at something from a different aspect.Love you
current book.
Take care,
Holly from Manitoba

Lynda's book...

Hello Tillie,

Actually, don't listen to Lynda...she's being modest about her book.
It's called "Goddess of the North". Published in April 2001?
It's a rather interesting and informative comprehensive study of Norse
goddesses. It reveals the female aspects of Norse traditions.
It can be found at Barnes and Noble, try this link:
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=0CD0F8GXWY&isbn=157863170X,
and I believe through: www.weiserbooks.com

Take care...Ingrid ;o)

(BTW...Hi Lynda, and thanks!)

A while back, someone mentioned something about a book about Norse
Goddesses. Sounds interesting. How could I get ahold of this book?

Trick Horse Video/Book

2002-11-07 Thread RkyMtnTrls
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Since I'm interested in teaching my ponies some tricks, I've been searching
around to find who offers videos/books. I'm the sort that learns best by
seeing and reading (I can't do it well by just reading).

I thought it would be a blast, to teach a 3 or 5 minute routine some of my
party ponies.Perhaps do something like have the pony give a short
performance before giving rides at a birthday party -- with the birthday
child being the recipient or person the pony does the tricks with. Then we'd
continue and give pony rides for the party. I think that is something the
kids will go wild over, and a very nice touch to our party services! (No one
else does that around here! grin)

Allen Pogue very thoughtfully referred this sight to me - and I wanted to
pass it along. (Thanks, Allen! mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]">[EMAIL
PROTECTED] host of 2
eLists for trick horse training - [EMAIL PROTECTED],
[EMAIL PROTECTED])

Larry Gagnon was "The Frontiersman" on TV with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry
(Adventure Theatre) - the show was 5 nights a week, for a year. He's got
about 50 years of trick horse experience (he's now in his 80's) -- has done
TV, rodeos, circuses and commercials...trained many horses and actors. His
book is $26.95 and his video is $39.95, or both for $50.00 - with 25 tricks
in all.
 http://www.geocities.com/frontersmm/";>"The Frontiersman" http://www.trickhorse.com/video.htm";>http://www.trickhorse.com/video.htm

The only other trick horse video/book offer I've come across on the internet
is Carole of Singin' Saddles' websitehttp://www.trickhorse.com/";>http://www.trickhorse.com/She
does not have as much time or credentials to offer quit as impressive as
Larry's, but is another resource. Her collection of videos cost $39.95 each,
and there's 6 videos (about $240 for the series), her book is $23.95. Looks
like about the same number and type of tricks, all together.

If you know of another trick horse trainer, who has a video/book offer (or
who does not) -- share with the list! This is a field I have found is hard
to research! (grin)

Trail Riding Book

2002-10-18 Thread Knutsen Fjord Farm
This message is from: "Knutsen Fjord Farm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all -

The trail riding books written by two women in Washington are authored by
our own Maureen Ogan and a friend, Josie Rusho, here in Ellensburg. Rene is
known for taking on some pretty challenging trails. She promotes Fjords well
and provides a good service to trail riders around here. [We don't have to
go on the way-up-high ones].

Theirr first book is entitled "Grab your tails and ride the trails," and the
second, "Trail blazing the Northwest." Rene is in the NFHR roster. She
doesn't list her email address there, though. She is a woman of many
talents - she also cleans teeth and reminds you to floss

For more information, try www.eburg.com/~rusho/index.htm - it's worth a
look. Email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
