I must have missed something. Has there been a new band text table
published? I have looked at the Flex web-site but did not see it.

Re: [Flexradio] New Band Text Table?

2006-12-17 Thread Tim Ellison
It is not an individual file that you download. You must download the
latest SVN of PowerSDR and allow it to create a brand new database to
get the updated BandText table. To do that, you must rename the
PowerSDR.MDB file in the PowerSDR directory that you are using to
something else before starting PowerSDR.

Then you can use the Database Table Migration Tool (it is on the KB) to
copy all of the other tables from your old database to the new one so
your current settings are preserved.

You can also use MS Access for this too. If you are not experienced
with databases and Access, I strongly recommend the DB Migration tool.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Noise Reduction

2006-12-17 Thread Robert McGwier
Dale and Larry:

When you have "cyclostationary" noise of the buzzing (but not impulsive
type) it has been a surprise to me how well the block LMS NR works. It
has many more taps than the regular LMS NR and it appears to hate the
most irritating features in these buzzing things and works to attenuate
them.

This was a pleasant serendipitous discovery.

Re: [Flexradio] S - Meter Emulation

2006-12-17 Thread Larry Loen
Double Da!!

There is way too much attention paid to S meters. I'm glad that ours is
accurate (or, more properly, can be made so), but unless you're trying
to do a serious scientific experiment in propagation, which requires
calibrated S meters _on both ends_ just for starters, it doesn't mean
much anyway.

We may as well tell the truth and have done with it.

A signal report, for the most part, is just a custom. And, like many
customs, it parts with reality, too, even before we consider poor
calibration.

Giving 59, in many cases, is done for the kind of reason you say "fine"
to someone inquiring "How are you" when, in fact, you have a terrible
cold and your tax bill just rose a thousand bucks.

We may as well have an accurate measure when we want one, because the
rest of the time, the number is arbitrary. I do it "by ear" without
hardly looking at the meter anyway, which has been true since my FT101
days. Scientifically, that's a travesty, of course, but I'm sure that
many if not most hams either say 59 or make a guess based on what hits
their eardrums anyway.

Frank and I are at GnuRadio Hackfest. I doubt anyone who knows us would
categorize us as anything but techno-geeks. We are constantly looking
at the lastest technology (we are about to have an OFDM system running

particular and communications in general. That said, though we both
support this decision, we are die hard CW users. Almost without
exception, when we sit down in front of a radio in either of our
homes, the first thing either of us touches is the paddle.

That said, I believe the FCC has done a thing they think will help save
amateur radio. That they would attempt this is surprising since they
could have just as easily made everyone do 20 wpm and killed the hobby
for sure and then auctioned off the spectrum. I hope they are right and
this succeeds. We must stop having our population grow one year older
per year. This is a prescription for utter disaster. The other
prescription for disaster is to sit on our backsides and fail to recruit
new people, as many as we can that are under 30 years old, into our
hobby. Software Radio, Cognitive Radio, and other high tech toys are
good tools to use to recruit interesting your people. USE THEM.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex Noise Reduction

2006-12-17 Thread Bill Tracey
 From Wikipedia:
A signal
having statistical properties that vary cyclically with time is called a
cyclostationary
process.[1] A
cyclostationary process can be viewed as multiple interleaved
stationary processes. For
example, the maximum daily temperature in New York City can be modeled as a
cyclostationary process: the maximum temperature on July 21 is
statistically different from the temperature on December 20; however, the
temperature on December 20 of different years has (arguably) identical
statistics. Thus, we can view the random process composed of daily maximum
temperatures as 365 interleaved stationary processes, each of which takes
on a new value once per year.

Amen and verily.

My son is licensed ("codeless Tech") and would have almost certainly
learned the code in ages past. Five minutes of talk with him would
convince any of us of that.

If we can't interest _him_ in the code (and, believe me, I know I
couldn't), then it's just a foregone conclusion that a code requirement
is doing more harm than good. Most of his friends don't even have
Codeless Techs. They're just the sort we used to get as a matter of
course. They find the whole code thing incomprehensible. I can't even
start the conversation.

There's lots of competition for tomorrow's hams out there we didn't use
to have, such as computers and the internet, that require no licensing
at all. Competition where meaningful participation is nearly immediate
and often very gratifying from the start. Where expertise can grow
gradually, at one's own rate. Some may talk about "dumbing down," but
the reality is, we're in competition with stuff that's a lot easier to
get involved in. For any hobby, even one with a service aspect
attached, we all want regular feedback. But, in the amateur service,
that feedback has been too long delayed.

Even without the code standing in the way, it's not going to be easy,
because we still need an exam-based hobby and service. But, it's much
better now that it was. We can go for 15 year olds, but also for 30
year olds in a way we just couldn't before.

Spread the word. The code (as a requirement) is dead, long live amateur
radio.

Larry WO0Z

PS, I think _after_ they're in it a while, they'll get motivated to
learn code. It is, of course, intensely practical for much of what we
like to do. But, today, that needs to be something that becomes clear
after a real, personal understanding of how propagation and radio really
work.

[Flexradio] Weak Signal Work on 6 meters

2006-12-17 Thread Dave & Nancy Ridge
I have a question about weak signal work on 6 meters using an SDR. Would the
Edirol be a a better choice for 6 meter work? Is the best setting for
sensitivity 192 or 96? I don't care about the panadapter view being wider on
the 192 setting, just interested in the best signal to noise!. Now using a
Delta 44 and am able to work scatter and tropo very well. It is great fun.

Using a Down East preamp and 1K+ output into a 30' yagi.

The waterfall, panadapter, noise blanks and frequency resolution is the best!
You always want more.

Thanks for your help,

Re: [Flexradio] Weak Signal Work on 6 meters

2006-12-17 Thread Tim Ellison
I'm going to give this a shot and anyone feel free to jump in.

The FA-66 has an I/Q input gain control. If you set this control to
have a lot of gain, it will be better for weak signal work, but at the
expense of strong signal handling.

The sampling rate does not have anything to do with the s/n ratio. It
just process the signals twice as fast so that you do not have as much
latency as you would with a 96 KHz sampling rate, which may be of some
significance if you are doing CW.

The FA-66 does have the best dynamic range of ant of the supported sound
cards.

And for what it's worth, the "9" doesn't mean S-9... it means that
you have "extremely strong signals" in an subjective rating scale.

[Flexradio] SDR on 6 Meters

2006-12-17 Thread Dave & Nancy Ridge
Thanks Tim.

I have both the the Delta 44 and the Fa-66 Edirol. I have check
both against a very weak sig that is steady on 6 meters. My measurements
with the S meter, NOT the S Meter, Ho Ho, the real thing (dbm digital meter)
is .5 to 3.0 dbm better with the Edirol. I wanted to know an unbais opinion
from an expert. Thanks.

Kevin,

I think you would throw rocks at your proiii if you tried the SDR on
6. You need the right stuff along with the SDR

You need antenna switches (coax relays betwen the SDR and the Down East
preamp, an amp that will take .5 watts to 50- 100 (I use a TE Systems Amp)
depending on how much power you need to drive the 1K amp, (I use a 4cx800)
antenna relay properly sequenced and you need a good directional antenna. (I
use an M2) Single conversion on 6 meters is unheard of but there are many
advantages.

Much fun on scatter and tropo!

[Flexradio] Question about RF pre-amplifier

2006-12-17 Thread petervn
Question about RF pre-amplifier

I am showing my SDR1000 to different groups of HAM's (in the Netherlands).

Doing so I get lots of questions.

I was thinking that the RF preamp (SGA-6286) could be switched ON and OFF, now
I think that this is probable not true.

Am I right? (I have no recent nor a complete schematic)

As I understand now it is:

Arial > [0 or -10dB] > [RF preamp] > [mixer] > [amplifier X dB or X+Y dB] >
Soundcard

Can someone tell me if this OK? Than I can give the right answers.

Thanks

Thanks a lot. I received the BandText table from Bodo, DJ9CS, and
found an unused ACCESS in my office computer. Now the new PowerSDR.mdb

Maybe, Tim or Bodo are going to upload the table to the Knowledge

the proper mdb-file according to the selected Region number. Not very
many hams have access to the ACCESS.

[Flexradio] AGC and Other Optomized Receiver Settings

2006-12-17 Thread Gerald Capodieci
I. M-Audio Software Changes
   1. DMA buffer to 1024
   2. Codec Sample Rate: Uncheck the "Rate Locked" box and the
  "Reset Rate When Idle" box.
   3. Variable Signal Levels: Outputs= -10dBv, Ins1= +4, Ins2= +4,
   Ins3= -10
In upper left hand corner of the PowerSDR main screen click the 'Setup"
option.
II. Audio Tab PowerSDR Software: Buffer = 1024
III. DSP Tab
V. Options Tab:
  1. NR: Taps = 90, Delay = 20, Gain = 50, Block LMS is
  checked
  2. Buffer Size = 1024, Window = Hanning, Noise Blanker =
  20, Noise Blanker 2 = 14
VI. AGC Changes
  1. Go back to the AGC Button on Main Screen set to "Custom"
and the Preamp = "Med", Audio ~ 75
  2. Click the Setup tab on the main screen followed by the DSP tab.
  3. Then Click 'AGC/ALC" tab, set Slope(db) = 3, MaxGain~ 75 (this
also changes the gain on Main Screen), Attack= 4, Decay = 10,
Hang= 140, Hang Threshold= all the way to the left.
  VIII. Optional Filter Settings
Suggest below matrix of settings I suggest an an arbitrary button-labeling
convention to indicate its underlying settings. The first number is the band
pass width; the second is the low cutoff. Example: [ 4 .1 ] has a band pass of
4 KHz and a low cut off of 100 Hz.
1. On the main screen, lower right, right click any one of the filters
buttons and select "Configure". This brings up a screen that allows the
individual filters to be reconfigured. Adjust the High and the Low cutoffs, the
Width (band pass) on the bottom will
adjust it self. CAUTION: the database can take only a limited number of
settings at once, perhaps 10. Then it locks showing a memory exception causing
all previous settings to be lost. To prevent the loss, Exit the software
completely periodically to automatically save current work
2. I'm using the following matrix of filter settings:
[4.3][4 .2][4.1]
[3.3][3 .2][3.1]
[2.3][2 .2][2.1]
[1.7 .3][VAR][1.7 .1]
I start with [3 .2] and select around till I find a best fit. Under
very high noise conditions such as today, 16Dec2006, during a
high sunspot condition [2. .3] seems to be most readable.

Thank you. This can be very helpful. I know the settings have to do with a
person's particular taste as per the KB article by Phil Harman VK6APH on this
subject. I was hoping that eventually we can figure out how to set up
"profiles" for different operating styles. Perhaps something like, weak signal,
contest, rag chewing or somesuch.

The KB article was a bit deep and even though I read it a few times still
cannot tell the difference when I change the settings on the console.
Additionally, band conditions have been so bad that I barely have any signals
out there to experiment with.

I. M-Audio Software Changes
   1. DMA buffer to 1024
   2. Codec Sample Rate: Uncheck the "Rate Locked" box and the
  "Reset Rate When Idle" box.
   3. Variable Signal Levels: Outputs= -10dBv, Ins1= +4, Ins2= +4,
   Ins3= -10

Jerry,

What sampling rate are you using on the D44?

Also, what do you set your DSP buffer size to?

[Flexradio] SDR on 6 Meters

Down East preamp is at the shack. You need low loss feed line if over 100 feet.
If you put the preamp at the antenna, there are all kinds of issues.

If you need further info, please e-mail at my e-mail address on QRZ.

That's it how I did it. Using MS Access I opened the PowerSDR.mdb

I figured it was either a glitch with the list server OR there's a
novel new virus/worm that, after harvesting names from a mailing
list, sends unsubscribe requests. (Particularly since I actually got
TWO of them, a minute apart).

AGC Optimized (optomized, sic) for what ?

Pretty soon I am going to be forced to re-quote here the excellent article
that was written for the TT Orion owners manual (you can download it from
the TT site) regarding optimizing SDR AGCs for and band conditons. It should be re-quoted, paraphrased.
plagiarized, what-have-you and included in the Flex knowledge base. Should
be a highly recommended read (required) for all Flexers.
