Re: [Flexradio] Them or me?

2011-12-08 Thread Steven Hess
Well two people on the WSPR Chat pointed out this looks like the bands are
60 cycles apart and the AC to his power supply is coupling into his poorly
shielded or inadequately earthed TX audio line.

I was more concerned if I had an issue with my RX in the presence of a
strong signal.

You don't even need to AC couple it as the Flex radios have a coupling
capacitor inside already, Just connect a resistor from bias to mic+ and you
are off and running.

I found a 405 and matching PS this summer at Austin Summerfest. It's a good
little and gives all the power I need. Runs with my Argo 509, HW-8, and K2 as
well as the 1500. Gives reduced power on WARC band but greater than the K2's 10
watts or the Flex's 5.

Was it PowerSDR, my Flex-3000 or their signal causing these images to

Their signal is not distorted.

Re: [Flexradio] microphones & headsets - connect to radio or computer?

2011-12-08 Thread Bill Ackerman

Thanks, Tim. Some additional discussion if you don't mind:

1. More input lines on PC
True, but the input is digital. Am I right that digital input into the
PC would be less susceptible to RFI than analog input into the radio?
Regardless, RFI has not reared its ugly head in my shack, but I've
slapped ferrite cores on everything too slow to outrun me.

2. D/A and A/Ds in radio have greater dynamic range
These are professional, studio-quality audio devices, not the best, but
good enough for my ears. I have tried hard and failed to detect any
difference when using the same headphones attached to the computer vs.
the radio. Haven't tried connecting a mic directly to the radio.

3. I'm way too inexperienced in this hobby to look at digital modes
yet, but I think I understand your point. Has Flex considered including
VAC configuration in Transmit profiles or some similar method so one
could simplify switching between voice and digital modes.

4. For folks like you who don't like eggnog, you might want to try
Rompope, a Mexican concoction that is quite tasty. Originally made by
nuns. No mistletoe allowed in that convent!

Re: [Flexradio] Amendment to Alternate WSPR programs

2011-12-08 Thread Steven Hess
John

I am pretty sure WSPR asks what directory you want to install WSPR to
during the installation process. Tell it WSPR2 then navigate to the folder
it installs in and link the exe from WSPR2 to your desktop after the
install. You will have two config files and can avoid having to change
thing every time you want to change rigs. You also can run two instance of
WSPR at the same time this way if your computer can handle it.

I am running two instances of WSPR here on my Windows 7 64 system. I made
some some stub filters and operate on 30 and 20 meters at the same time no
problems. I am currently WSPRing on 10, 20 and 30 meters. One instanse of
WSPR is running on my Linux machine.

[Flexradio] Linear amp for Flex 1500

2011-12-08 Thread joe_hank...@lexcominc.net
For those considering an amplifier for their 1500, I've found the
Ten-Tec 405 to fit the bill quite nicely. With the 1500, it delivers
30-50 clean watts. All it requires is 12 volts at 8 amps, and is quite
compact. It's got both a power meter and an SWR meter, and has a band
switch for 10-80 meters. There is a matching power supply, but you
don't need it. I found mine at a hamfest for $125 this summer.

Sorry if this subject has already been covered, but I just started
Flexing a few weeks ago.

I know that, but both my F1500 and FT817 are used for portable

While I had fun, there are a lot of the microwave crowd that are not

problems, what microphone to use and several others of your choice. I will
admit to being fascinated by some of the comments since I have had no

quietness of the 3000 and 5000A. I can detect no fan noise whatever. But
I am certain that with some 13 fan-containing devices in the shack there
must be some detectable sound. But I've decided that the most reasonable
course of action to take is to ignore the possibility since such worry would
be as silly and pointless as concentrating on similar noise coming from the

Here is the problem that may negate your attempt to automate the switching
process. You see, WSPR is broken. WSPR doesn't use the sound-device name
but rather the sound-device enumeration in order to select the sound
device. The problem is, the enumeration changes any time you add or remove
a sound device. Have a set of USB computer mic/headphones? Plug them in and
negate the sound-card settings in WSPR. Same with turning on or off the
1500. The only solution is to make sure you check and reset the sound-card
settings manually every time you start WSPR and every time you add or
remove a device. Given that, you may as well just plan to touch the
settings and not bother with multiple config files.

Re: [Flexradio] 3000 or 5000

2011-12-08 Thread William H. Fite
Also, many fans designed for computer use are supplied with dampers or
shock mounts. Two that I particularly like because they are high
quality and very quiet are Cougar and Noctua. The latter is about
twice the cost of the former, both are excellent, the Noctua lasts
longer.

Fan noise is often of much greater concern to computer users than to
radio users (yes, yes, we are both) because a high-performance PC can
have as many as 10 fans on board. Thus, computer fans usually come
with detailed noise specs as well as the above-mentioned damper
mounts.

Fan speeds are often variable, as well, either by controlling voltage or PWM.

of the shack.

The main reason I have it accessible is for the microphone jack. I have
a single MH-31 that I share between the F3K, my F1500 and my FT817. If
someone knows of a source I would like to get a couple more.

Re: [Flexradio] Fan noise

2011-12-08 Thread William H. Fite
As you know, tinnitus bothers the heck of some people while others
(like me) just ignore it. Interestingly, one of the standard
treatments for tinnitus in people who are seriously impaired by it is
to mask it with white noise. Once again, this demonstrates the extent
to which such matters are psychologically as well as physiologically
determined.

Bottom line: If you think it is going to bother you, it is going to bother you.

I recommend eggnog therapy in all such cases. Two or three cups and
you won't give a damn whether the fans are noisy or not. Another two
or three and you won't care if the fans are even running or not. Your
gear, however, will care...

Another solution is to develop tinnitus.

After well over three decades in industrial control, much being spent
around paper machines, I have a constant ringing in my ears that
completely swamps any PC or radio fan noise. I just turn the speaker
volume up or wear headphones.

Damper mounts are pretty easy to make with RTV Silicone if there is
enough room around the fan - unscrew it, suspend it, put globs of the
RTV to support it, then let it thoroughly set before removing the
temporary "suspenders".

Not recommended while under warranty. Also might not withstand
shipping stress. But very good for homebrew stuff or if you
ABSOLUTELY need something quieter.

I have not seen the insides of the 3000 and don't know if this would
work with it.

[Flexradio] Amendment to Alternate WSPR programs

2011-12-08 Thread John Pratt
Greetings,
I need to rephrase a question that I just posted concerning two WSPR programs
on the same computer. I do not intend to run these at the same time, just
wanted to have one configured for the Flex rig and one configured for the Icom
which uses a conventional interface and the computer sound card.

John, your guess may be right. However, here's a possibility: There's a
file called wspr.ini found in the wspr directory. You could configure for
the icom, exit WSPR, then make a copy of this file as, say, wspricom.ini.
Then restart WSPR and re-configure for the 1500 and copy the wspr.ini to
wspr1500.ini.

Then write two batches to start up WSPR. One would say something like:

cd "c:\program files (x86)\WSPR"
copy wspricom.ini wspr.ini
start "" "wspr.exe"

and the other would do the same for the 1500.

I haven't tried this but it ought to work.

Tony KT0NY

Oh, not at all William. I am enjoying it. As a result I have learned new

All kidding aside, you and Duane are probably feeling a bit edgy. I
recommend a glass of egg nog to raise your blood Chistmas-spirit level.

Are you saying that you want to run WSPR twice on the same computer, just
connected to different radios? I am not sure that will work if you plan to
transmit unless you have really good antenna isolation.

Regardless, I don't think that WSPR will run multiple instances on the same
computer. If you want to do that, why not get an older, junk computer. I
bet if you poke around you can get one for next to nothing.
