I have not been able to spend as much time on this thread as I would

I have very carefully been following the install procedure on the HRD
website for integrating the Flex, VAC, com0com and I am down to where
the PTT on psk is simply "chopping".
I have also installed the trial version of HRD and will likely get the
fee paid this evening.
Each of the packages have their own variance from the instructions
posted as they have updates and enhancements added.
I don't consider this a bug, it is simply the normal way to take
advantage of cutting edge technology. I am enjoying the Quest and

Re: [Flexradio] N1MM Keying CW on PowerSDR

2012-12-08 Thread Al K0VM

Steve,
First -- N1MM does not support CW via a sound card ( vac ) interface..
Second -- You need to have a CW keying method (serial port pair)
seperate from your CAT and PTT interfaces. In PowerSDR this is
configured in SETUP>DSP>Keying>Connections>Secondary. ( Your Paddles may
use the Primary connections ) In N1MM, the other end of the virtual
serial port pair is configured in Config>Config Ports,...>Hardware
Third -- The CW keying ( and PTT ) is not routed through DDUtil...
DDUtil only supports CAT information.

  Hope this helps.

I thought I was pretty good at this... I had PowerSDR, N1MM, and a plethora
of other CAT/VAC based programs working harmoniously together. Last
contest I used N1MM to key CW and it worked liked a charm. I don't
remember changing anything on the system, but obviously I must have tweaked
something.

N1MM will activate the PTT but I get no audio and no CW. It keeps the
radio keyed for the duration of the message, and them releases.

I have looked at the VAC settings, DDUtil looks okay a RCP port set for
N1MM. The N1MM config hasn't been changed. Where should I be looking?

Re: [Flexradio] Trying to set up an SDR-1000

2012-07-20 Thread Al K0VM
Another potential difficultly is the voltage levels coming out of the
parallel adapter ...
The original parallel port standard supplied 0 to 5 volt signals. Some
newer adapters supply 0-3 volt signals.. The SDR-1000 likes 0-5 volt
signals. And then there is the problem that some of the newer
"parallel" adapters support just a part of the full, original set of
signals, only enough to drive a parallel port printer. The SDR-1000
likes a full set of signals.

Just something else to look at.

The flexwiki had a list of know good adapter, but the wiki is down right
now.

Hi --

I am trying to initially set up an SDR-1000 -- using an Edirol FA-66
sound card (with Windows 7 driver, works fine on my OS, Windows 7
service pack 1), a Best Connectivity PCMCIA adapter with a Best
Connectivity parallel adapter card plugged into it, and a Best
Connectivity Firewire card (TI chipset).

The FA-66 works fine playing back and recording with other programs,
so from that I conclude the Firewire card is working fine.

Windows says the parallel adapter and PCMCIA combo are working but I
know of no way to test this.

When I start PowerSDR 2.3.5.18564 (after previously powering up the
transceiver) I do NOT hear any relays clicking as I should, and the
software starts up stuck in the MOX on mode with a (obviously bogus)
reading of 579 Watts forward power. The software does exactly the
same thing if the SDR-1000 is turned off.

Could it be that my parallel card and its PCMCIA adapter/holder (a
thrift store purchase) is dead even though Windows says it is
"functioning normally"? I have tried three different parallel cables
with no difference between them.

With thanks for any ideas,

Kevin, WB4AIO.

2012-05-14 Thread Al K0VM

Rob,
The flex configuration files are generally in the
%appdata%\FlexRadio Systemsdirectory.

Open Windows Explorer and in the address field type %appdata%
Then navigate to FLexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v2.3.5
There you should find a file named something like
database_F1.5K_3009-4778.xml

Thanks Ray,

I remember that I looked for the right MBD file but couldn't find it.
But now I have the same problem: I can't for the life of me find an XML file
that is even remotely connected with PSDR.

Tons of XML files here but all different (logbook etc.)

I have Win 7 (64 bit). Where should it be? Common Files, App Data, etc?

Re: [Flexradio] Using Keyboard & Mouse With PowerSDR

2012-04-22 Thread Al K0VM

Gary,
To run the Flexcontrol through DDUTIL, you first have to disable it
in PowerSDR..

PSDR > Flexcontrol > Uncheck "AutoDetect" then enable it in DDUtil.
DDUTil has additional functionality that allows you to trigger a
ddutil macro, which in turn could be a TUN CAT command ( or any valid
PSDR CAT Command ). Se*e

Background - Using a Flex-3000, PowerSDR 2.3.5, Flexcontrol, DDUtil
2.0.7.24, N3FJP Logging Program, Bobmeter, and a Neal provided computer.
Everything is working well with no problems.

My primary issue is about maintaining "focus" with the mouse and
keyboard over two monitors. I have two computer monitors - one used
solely by PowerSDR and the other that shows my logging program, a
minimized DDUtil screen, Bobmeter, Flex Audio mixer, and the Powermaster
computer screen.

Typically, I leave the mouse cursor, and therefore focus, hovering over
the N3FJP logging screen so that I can easily enter call data as I work
a station. I use Flexcontrol to control PowerSDR. This works well but
with some limitations. As currently configured, I can't use Flexcontrol
to change bands or engage the "Tune" button to allow my Palstar AT-Auto
tuner to automatically tune the system for the band/frequency in use. I
know that you can use keyboard commands to change bands (M&N) but the
mouse cursor must be on the PowerSDR screen to use such keyboard
commands. This defeats my desire to leave the mouse cursor over the
logging program on the "other" monitor.

I can't find any keyboard or Flexcontrol command to engage the Tune
button in PowerSDR.

Currently, PowerSDR configured Flexcontrol when I installed the 2.3.5
version. I see that the DDUtil 2.0.7.24 program supporting Flexcontrol
allows a button to control band changes.

Two questions for the experts on this reflector -

1. What must I do to have DDUtil control the Flexcontrol instead of
PowerSDR? If I tell DDUtil to select port 20 (used by Flexcontrol), it
tells me that that port is already in use (I assume by PowerSDR). Using
DDUtil to control the Flexcontrol would at least allow me to change
bands from the Flexcontrol.

2. Is there any way to engage the Tune button in PowerSDR without
actually moving my mouse over to the PowerSDR dedicated monitor and
losing focus on the monitor used by my logging program? Do any of the
Macros supported by the DDUtil supported Flexcontrol device actively
affect the Tune button?

Sorry for the rambling nature of my questions. Hopefully someone can help.

Re: [Flexradio] Back in the saddle with the 5000A

2012-04-14 Thread Al K0VM

Jim,
If you happen to be using DDUtil, you can set up DDUtil macros to
switch PSDR TX Profiles when you change modes.. It will not know which
mic you might be using or if your running psk vs. wspr, etc. And cw
does not have a TX profile.. But I find it very useful none the less.
When chasing DX, I click on a phone spot and get my SSB profile...
click on a RTTY and get my RTTY profile..

To bad PSDR does not yet have RX Profiles.. It would simplify how
much stuff I have in my DDUtil macros.

Got my 5000A reinstalled into the shack today and took a few hours to do
some ragchewing on 75 and 160M this evening, AM and SSB both.

What can I say? The receiver audio is simply outstanding, especially as
compared to my other solid-state rigs. AGC threshold is now a "gotta
have" feature, and the TX audio gets unsolicited praise on both AM and
SSB. The 5K drove the tetrodes comfortably at legal limit tonight with
the drive just touching 20 watts.(PEP SSB) Very nice. Adding a 2nd
monitor so that PSDR runs maximized and "on top" all the time makes it
all very, very nice.:-)

Now if I could only figure out all the rules for the TX profiles in PSDR
2.3.5 ... Just wondering out loud, would it make it too complex to be
able to assign a TX profile to an operating mode, so that (for example)
when I switch from AM to SSB it automagically does it for me? Having all
of the TX-specific control settings as part of the profile gets me most
of the way there now. Having the profiles change with the mode (if
assigned) seems to me to be the next logical step. Or so it seems at
1AM...;-)

Hi Jim,

I made a number of profiles for my Flex5kA, because I use several
microphones, depending on the "seriousness" of being on the band (difficult
DX vs Average lazy phone operation).

I mainly use two mics: a Heil ProSet plus headset and a Heil PR781.

The PSP has two elements: HC-4 (DX) and HC-5 (more lows/ less presence). I
created profiles for both.

Then I often use the 781 on a boom for "normal" work and 5kHz audio width
on AM (resulting in 10kHz RF width of course).

So I made two more profiles for the 781.

If you want I can send you a recording of my voice (quick record with
Monitor on while TX-ing into a dummy.

I can also give the settings but they're particular for my voice/mic
combination.

You'll probably know this, but I like the fact that not only the EQ is
stored in the profile, but also the level of compression an downward
expansion (and noise gating).

You may have a different problem that the few F1500's have...
When my 1500's problem occurs, all operation is normal EXCEPT the
PHONES and Flexwire audio outputs have extremely load white noise. If
the AF is set to 1 and the RX1 vertical slider is set to about half way,
the white noise witll go away and the audio is normal. The Panadpater is

I'm using a Flex 3000 and PSDR 2.2.3 on 64bit Win7 machine. This past
weekend was the first time I noticed a random white noise problem. I
thought it was some sort of local noise being generated in my house or
neighborhood having never heard it in the 2 years I've owned the rig .The
multiple posts about this suggest otherwise. The noise floor was suddenly
jumping for 5 seconds or so from S3 to S8. It was only on 20 meters. It
happened randomly about every 10 or 15 seconds.I'll take a closer look at
patterns if it happens again. Whatever it was however seemed to stop the
next time I turned on the rig a couple days later.Looking forward to others
reports/solutions. Regards,

Re: [Flexradio] random time loud "white" noise?

Mathias,
I found that when I installed a 'Dynex' USB hub between the 1500 and
the PC the problem disappeared with WIN7 and previous versions of PSDR.
If I put in a different USB hub from Dynex, but a different model, the
problem remained.
It seems that with 2.3.5 the problem is present even with the HUB
but is less frequent with the HUB than without it.

This suggested to me that there may a subtle USB timing issue that
is hardware ( including the FLex ) and OS related.

Most 1500's do not appear to have the problem, my does.

there is no way to get further integration...The 998 does not have any

I generated the RTTY and PSK-31 signals with DM-780 v 5.0 and adjusted for an
ALC value of -1 dB. My question is why does my power output almost double from
the lower bands to the upper bands (except for 6 meters) when using the digital
modes and conversely why are the power outputs lower on the lower frequency
bands while the tune power remains fairly constant? I am using PowerSDR 2.2.3

Paul,
To run the 1500 and the 5k at the same time you need to select the
1500 in the chooser form first.

once you have the 1500 running, start and choose the 5k.

   Works for me..

How does one make this work? I can start two instances of PSDR but they both
see only the 5000. Can anyone tell me the trick to get both radios running
at the same time on one PC?

Thanks!

Use DIGU for everything (in most cases). Depending on the program you may
find RTTY uses DIGL and then it will use DIGL for all bands.

But the most common digital programs, e.g. fldigi, HRD, etc., will use DIGU
for everything.

Bottom line -- read the fine print for the program you are running but use
DIGU by default.

Re: [Flexradio] Grounding a PC to a Flex

2011-11-18 Thread Al K0VM
My take on the problem is that from an RF point of view, if the length
of the grounds from the radio to the bus bar to the PC are short enough
( significantly less that a 1/4 wavelength at the highest frequency)
then that would be my preference. If that path is nearly a 1/4
wavelength or longer and the direct path from the PC to the radio is
shorter, then direct from radio to PC would be preferable, with a ground
from the radio to the bus bar but not to the PC. ( and ferrites on the
power cord and other lines to the PC )

From a lightning protection point of view, everything to the bus bar.

So it depends a bit on what your trying to achieve. There is no 'right
way' for every situation but many ways that will work.

I know that the best practice is to ground everything in a shack to a common buss bar. However, I
have also read here that the SDR PC should be grounded directly to the Flex, due to the
"special relationship" of the PC and Flex. Which best practice wins? PC to buss bar, or
PC to Flex? The difference in length, while small, would make the 'Flex to PC' ground path length
less than the firewire length, while the "both to buss bar" would make the Firewire
shorter than the ground path. If it makes any difference, I use 1.5 inch copper strap to a 3/8
inch copper buss bar behind my shack, and thereupon to an exterior perimeter ground about 8 feet
away. I realize that this may be splitting hairs, but what is the best practice?Jim KJ2P

Re: [Flexradio] Setting up DSP Noise Reduction on PSDR 2.2.3

2011-11-02 Thread Al K0VM
I think a part of the problem with NR and NB is expectations, situations
and implementation limitations, both on the part of users and implementors.

I have not seen a NR function on any radio that seemed to live up to
my wildest dream expectations.

I agree that the current PSDR NR doesn't seem to do much useful. But I
seem to remember that in an eariler version of PSDR, ( back about 1.12
or so ) NR seemed to work much better.

The noise blanked in PSDR does work IF you have the right kind of
noise.. In fact, it is impressive on a strong repetitious spike from an
arching power line arrester. But it is of little use when the noise
looks more like white noise or is not much stronger than the signals
you're trying to receive.

One would wish that with the push of a button all noise could be gone,
the the laws of physics and implementation reality get in the way.

It would be nice if NR worked. I also have not found any settings that
were useful.

It would also be nice if NB and NB2 worked, if you set the level to
eliminate the noise, it distorts the audio and brings in splatter from
off frequency signals.

I hope Flex has plans to fix these issues.

Don't use the NR and use the AGC-T control instead. It works better on
a greater variety of noise types.

Re: [Flexradio] Help with digital

2011-10-12 Thread Al K0VM
VAC selections in many Amateur radio modem programs ( including
MMTTY) are likely to change each time you boot Windows. Especially if
one time you boot with the Flex 5000 powered off and the next time you
boot with the Flex 5000 powered on.
PowerSDR does a very good job at sorting out the changing VAC
enumerations. MMTTY and most other amateur radio programs do not.

I check VAC selections each time I start a modem program.

Frank,

That definitely sounds like RF feedback. The most likely culprit is the
firewire cable. I had the same issue running my amp with my FLEX-5000A.

First, make certain that your PC is connected to the shack ground. After
all, it is better than half of the radio.

If you are using the stock firewire cable that came with the rig, replace it
with the one by Granite Digital. Is costs about $40& is availabel from
Flex.

Finally, if you still are having problems, add ferrite chokes at each end of
the firewire cable.

The above steps eliminated my RF feedback problems entirely. Now I can run
1kW on all bands with no issues.

Jim,
The symtoms you describe are consistant with lack of communications
on SDR-1000 control cable..
This could be the radio not turned on. Or the control cable not
connected ( or missing wires in the parallel cable ) or not configured
correctly ( in correct LPT address). Or If you have the Flex USB to
parallel cable, the Driver could be missing or not installed correctly,

Your radio is probably OK.

Somewhere between PSDR V 1.18.6 and PSDR V 2.0.16 somebody broke the
code, I think. Read up on the bug I reported back in January (

has not been fixed yet.

If you use V 1.18.6, you will probably be OK.

2011-07-12 Thread Al K0VM

Mike,
I have seen a similar symptom with the SDR-1000, which has no
firewire... It may be doubtful if it is the same cause.

I can recover transmit function by one of several methods. Toggling VAC
on>off>on. Toggling to a different mode ssb>cw>ssb or changing to a
different TX DSP buffer size..

In my case, if I revert to PSDR to 1.18.6, the problem disappears..

I have not had a like problem on my Flex5K PSDR 2.x.x

I seem to have this intermittent problem and I have been working directly
with Tim and Gerald on this as well as other areas within the Flex team.

There are 2 scenarios and this is on a Windows 7, 64 Bit both with and
without an Intel Firewire card and both either in legacy mode and not in
legacy mode.

After a clean reboot, you turn on the radio, wait until Windows finds the
firewire ports and then start PSDR. All looks good, but you have no power
out.

To recover, you:

Shutdown PSDR
Power off the radio
Wait
Power on the radio
Wait
Start PSDR

All is good and now you have power

The other scenario is that all is good. Then for no apparent reason, you
loose power again (with no warning).

It would be nice if PSDR would tell you when it has no RF out as the RF
output meter on the Radio also shows 0 watts out. (Gerald, maybe we can add
that with a warning popup--last night I was running 6M and couldn't figure
out why no one was call me back).

The recovery is the same as above. Last night, I worked 2 more contacts
when I lost power again. I did the same recovery and then it worked fine
for a few more hours.

This is with the latest non-beta release.

My ask to the community is have you seen this before and if so, how did you
fix it. Remember, I have tried every combination of Firewire card, etc.,
(see above).

Many thanks all, Mike VA3MW

Re: [Flexradio] Antennas and PSDR diversity question

2011-05-12 Thread Al K0VM

I also have one of these.. Have it about 3m above ground level..

Seems to work well on lower HF bands where RX is limited by background
noise but did not notice any great improvement in received SNR.. Works
less well at higher HF frequencies, worse SNR than my other antennas.

Only problem I have had with it is that it doesn't like it when I key
the transmitter into it.. ... I no longer have it connected to a
transmit coax..

John,
I have seen F5K dropouts in VAC 4.09 transmit data also, but on
Win XP..
One thing that has helped me to eliminate the TX drop out is to
change my PSDR VAC setting to use Windows Sound Direct instead of
Windows WDM-KS...
I can see the drop-out if I switch the PSDR display to Scope..
They're about 200millisec in length.

Let me know if it helps...

 YMMV

The SDR-1000 and F-1500 don't seem to have the VAC drop-out problem
that I am seeing on the F5K...

On an AMD 2.9 quad with 2g of RAM running 64bit windows 7.

it appears everything is working together except...
It receives great, but when I transmit the sstv picture gets a row of
horizontal lines in it.
I can listen to my audio and hear a sound, like a pop, about every 10
seconds that I believe is making the lines.
This doesn't happen when I send using a conventional radio. I'm
thinking it

has something to do with the computer multi-tasking.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to cure this will be appreciated

Re: [Flexradio] Center Pan Control (Display)

2011-03-16 Thread Al K0VM

Ted,
Its not as simple as software... Its a system limitation..
With the Zoom control set all the way to the left, the center of the
display (with SR off ) is where the DDS is actually tuned to. It is also
where the I&Q output frequency is zero hertz (DC). The digital IF is
9khz above the DDS (0 hz ).
The maximum bandwidth of the panadapter is nearly equal to the DAC
sample. The only way to lock the red line in the center is to give
up display bandwidth.

In the very early days of PowerSDR the panadapter display was less
than half of the DAC sample rate and the red line was near in the
center.I'd rather have the display width..

Jim,
I think it is by design the you can not turn the pre-amp on of the
higher bands.. The preamp, in addition to providing gain also provides
isolation that prevents internal signals (conducted radiation) from
reaching your antenna during receive.. On the lower bands the signals
are within regulator limits without the preamp.. The isolation provided
by the preamp keeps the conducted radiation with in limits on the higher
bands.

This last weekend I played around in the DX contest with The
SDR-1000

Then I ran just over three hours with 1.18.6 and had ZERO hangups...
( so my original suppositions that It was a relay hanging, appear to be
incorrect. )

[Flexradio] Bobsmeter & HRD?

Can anyone point me to any info on how to set up PowerSDR to operate with
both CAT connected programs Bobsmeters and HRD simultaneously??
I am using vspMgr now and can run either program not both at the same

Could be true but I can also guarantee you that those small relays can not
handle too many open circuited loads and nearby lightning strikes like the
old open frame relays of yesterday's rigs could.

If it was a bad relay, it would happen on all bands. This might be a WBIR
issue. The developers are looking into it.

It sounds very much like a bad T/R relay. Unless you are putting out enough
power when keying the mic to correct an antenna issue.
I see the problem with sticky T/R relays on the older radios with knobs.
Once you fix the problem temporarily by keying the mic, does it stay good
for a while? Or is it a constant problem while you are on 6M or only when
you change bands to 6M?
Hope to see you on tropo again.

I have a 3000 and have noticed a drop in signal at times. I have confirmed
this by monitoring a beacon signal . I never noticed this until I upgraded
to the latest software. Its like you lose a couple of "S" units on the
signal , I can key the mic on the Flex and signal will return to normal. Has
anyone else noticed this problem. The SWR stays the same , I first suspected
coax or antenna problem but have now ruled those out. Any help or comments?
This only happens on 50 mhz.

Re: [Flexradio] New Software for ShuttlePro/PowerSDR integration

2011-01-05 Thread Al K0VM

Bradley,
This sounds like a more elegant way of doing what I have hay-wired
together to do the same thing...
First I programmed the ShuttlePro Global Settings to emit unlikely to
be used key combination i.e Win +1 etc
Then I used AutoHotKey to intercept those key strokes and translate them
into CAT sequences and direct them to a terminal emulator interface and
thus to PSDR or DDUTIL.. ( or just some of them to the TE and others
into the N1MM logging program )... Still a work in progress..

I would suggest that you include some means of making the ShuttlePro
key to CAT translations user programmable.

For my casual operations, I rarely touch the ShuttlePro but find it
more useful in a contest situation.

Jim,

I was wondering what kind of audio distortion you were getting reports of?
One thing about the PR40 and just about all Heil microphones is that you
should not get any closer than 4 inches to the mic, or 6 inches if you have
a big booming voice, the lows will get so muffled that it will sound
distorted..

Also did you try the PR40 setting in the Expert Transmit Profiles? It's a
good place to start.

[Flexradio] Win updates aug 2010

2010-08-13 Thread Al

1) Installed the MS Windows updates for AUG 2010.
2) On my Win XP Pro SP3 (x86) desktop machine, the install was
successful and the F1500 and F5K ran the same as before with Psdr 2.0.7

2) On my Win 7 Home (x64) laptop machine
a) The F5K failed to run for more than 2 seconds ( immediate freeze up
).
	b) I did a system restore and the F5k operation was restored to normal
but discovered that the firewire driver had reverted from the legacy
driver to the Win7 firewire driver..
	c) Reinstalled the Aug windows updates and the F3K again froze up
immediately.

e) Again reinstalled legacy firewire driver, but Still freeze ups.
	f) Took a guess and uninstalled the .NET framework 3.5.1 on WIndows 7
for 64 bit systems(KB983590). The F5K with 2.07 is now working correctly.

e) Did not try running the F1500 while I had KB983590
installed. Seems to run ok with it uninstalled.

Re: [Flexradio] Help with N1MM

2010-07-12 Thread Al

Ed,
I have found three things helpful when running contest loggers with
PowerSDR..
First... turn off for the duration of the contest disable PowerSDR
keyboard shortcuts Setup>General>Options

Second.. Load and enable HOTWHEEL ...
see
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50156.aspx?Keywords=hotwheel
and
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50420.aspx?Keywords=hotwheel

and third... Use X-Mouse from within the Tweek UI portion of powertools
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
(for XP load the Powertools package. It is already in Win 7 somewhere
and enable X-Mouse, I use an activation delay of 200 msec)

With Hotwheel enabled, the mouse wheel retains control of PowersSDR
vfo A frequency regardless of where the Windows focus is.
With X-mouse, the windows focus follows the mouse pointer without the
need to click the mouse..
If you add N1MM to the mix, you can leave the mouse pointer in
PowerSDR to point and click and wheel tune even when N1MM grabs the
focus for keyboard entry.

Your style of operating may be different from mine..

Re: [Flexradio] Problem with AM and FM Transmit being 22kHz, Low

2010-06-20 Thread Al

Ged,
Assuming it is not a software problem
If the AM/FM TX signal that is 22 Khz below the dial frequency is
40-50 DB less than the carrier on the dial frequency, then it is a TX
image rejection problem... ( recalibrate TX image for AM vs. SSB )
If the signal that is 22 khz below the dial is approximately equal
to the signal amplitude that is on the dial frequency, then either the
TX I or Q signal is not getting to the QSE or there is a failure in the
QSE .. (check cabling )
If the signal that is 22 khz below the dial is 40-50 db greater that
the signal on the dial frequency, then either TX I & Q signals have
become swapped or I (or Q) has become inverted ... ( inverted phasing
on an isolation transformer ? )

Hi Tim,

The first thing I did was check the audio cable connections and make sure
they were all seated properly. Doing some further investigation just now I
have also noticed that when the mode is set to AM or FM and I press the tune
button the TX frequency is 11kHz down from set frequency. Activating the TX
using the PTT results in a carrier 22kHz down from the set frequency. The
fact that these are multiples of the audio IF must indicate something but
what?

OK. Check the audio cable connections from the sound card to the radio.
Having then not properly seated can cause what you are seeing.

Does anyone have any idea as to why my SDR-1000 might be transmitting 22kHz
lower than the set receive frequency when the mode is set to AM or FM. The
transmit frequency in all other modes is correct and the tune button
generates a carrier at the correct frequency. It just the transmit
frequency on AM and FM that is consistently 22kHz low and this happens on
all bands. Grateful for any ideas or suggestions anyone may have.

Many Thanks,

of a better way to save a database now that FlexProfiler is not supported.

Looks like you have to make your change, close PowerSDR which closes the
database file too, restart PowerSDR and then do the export before changing any
other settings.

This just might be the way it works. You can add this to the bug tracker and
the development team will determine if it is working as designed or is an
actual bug. This might be an enhancement request.

Tim,
If I have PSDR open and set up controls for a particular mode and then do
an 'export database', change some more stuff and exit PowerSDR, then restart
PSDR and import the previously exported database, PSDR
reverts to the setting that existed when I first started PSDR. It acts
like the 'Export database" function makes a copy of the database.xml file that
existed when the session was started and does not reflect any control changes made
during the session before the export. ( I am running WinXP Pro SP3, Beta
2.0.0.3715) It further appears that the database.xml file is not updated until PSDR
is closed.

The quick test... open PSDR on band A ( 20 m). Change to band B ( 40 m).
Export database. Change to band C ( 80 m).
Close PSDR.
Open PSDR returns of band C (80 m), OK.
Import database that was just exported. PSDR returns to band A ( 20 m ) even
though band B ( 40 m ) was selected when doing the export.

So how do I export the current selections ?

Can you provide a "real world" example of what you are trying to accomplish?

Re: [Flexradio] Trying to setup VSP manager and totally lost

2010-04-20 Thread Al
If I am not totally mistaken, if your using one of the serial port
emulators for CAT, the selected baud rate is unimportant for most cases.
The data is never actually serialized.

Some (older?) programs ( I haven't seen one) may rely on the baud
rate for their internal timing, in which case VSPmgr provides a 'Enable
strict baud rate emulation' function.

Never mind!! I have been sitting here for the last 30 to 45 minutes
trying to figure this out and finally I just happened to notice I didn't
have "Enable CAT" checked in the PowerSDR software. DU! I feel like
an idiot about now.
BTW, while I'm wasting bandwidth, what is the recommended baud rate
for communication between the radio and the logging software? I assume
baud rate is still in play with virtual ports.

There is a setting in Windows 7 that lets the focus follow the cursor so
as soon as you move the cursor over the window it becomes active. Move
to another window and it becomes active. It is under control panel/ease

Re: [Flexradio] Anderson power & flexradio power cord

2010-03-23 Thread Al

Sorry for my delayed two cents worth.. but I read the daily digest...

The choice to fuse the power cable should include an evaluation of the power
source...
An infinite current "lead acid battery" type of power source definitely
requires fusing the the power cable at the source.
With a modern regulated and current limited power power supply is is just a
personal choice.

Most well designed power supplies can run all day into a dead short and not
damage the power supply. If the cable is large enough to handle the maximum
power supply current no cable fuse would be required.
On the other hand, power cable fusing may give peace of mind and only cost a
couple of dollars and a small voltage drop across the fuse and fuse holder.

1.) The radio is fused internally
2.) Adding fusing to the power cable is a personal preference but not required
(I recommend it)
3.) The max wattage of the radio is 25 amps. I have never seen may radio draw more than
about 20 amps key down @ full power. I use no more than a 25 amp fuse for the entire
supply. I use 10 amp fuses on each leg "hot" (+) of the power cable. I have
not blown one yet.
4.) The PA internal fuse is 30 amps
5.) The TRX board internal fuse is 10A

[Flexradio] Flex 3000 with Windows 7 observation (garbling audio)

2010-02-07 Thread Al Konschak
I received my Flex 3000 last May and been running it on Win XP and Vista 32
on a laptop with no issues at all.

A few weeks ago I decided to upgrade the shack computer to Win 7 with a
clean install and new hard drive.

The computer is a Dell 420 with a Quad core Q9400 running 4 gigs of ram.
Surely enough horse power to run PSDR.

I did the upgrade and downloaded the latest drivers and Power SDR from the
Flex site. Everything worked right from the beginning, until I ran another
program with streaming media content, whether it be audio or video
concurrently with the flex.

The audio on the 3K would start to garble. If I restarted Power SDR, it
would clear for a few seconds then start to garble again. Everything would
run fine as long as I didn't multitask two streaming programs.

I did a little research and found out about DPC latency checker. Every time
I ran it with multiple streams, it ran off the chart in the red.

I made sure all my drivers were up to date from the dell site and also
played around with various buffering in the flex with no success.

Since I never had this problem with XP, I thought I'd roll back the Flex
driver to an earlier version. That didn't work at all with Win 7. Looks like
you must have the latest driver for 7.

Since I kept my XP hard drive intact, I decided to put it back in the
machine.

I updated the Flex drivers on the XP drive to the latest (It was 2 versions
back).

Everything is now working fine with XP and I can stream other programs along
with the flex with very little latency.

It seems the latest Flex driver may have a problem with Win 7 on my machine.
I wonder if others are seeing the same?

I'm a new Flex owner and I really like this radio! But...

I have a problem with MixW working with my new 5000A.

SNIP ..

Due to the way Mixw ( and some other digital programs ) and WINDOWS
enumerate the the soundcard ports, I have gotten into the practice of
checking the sound card setups EACH TIME the I start Mixw or other
program interfaced to PSDR thru VAC. I have yet to see the VAC
settings in PSDR change except when restarting with a new database.

Recently developed programs seem to be better about stability of sound
card settings.

[Flexradio] Preamp on Flex 3000 makes radio go deaf

2009-06-29 Thread Al Konschak
I had the new Flex out to Field Day and it preformed great. The only thing
was that I got a call to the tent and the operator said he couldn't hear any
signals. After checking the cables and such, I shut don't the laptop and the
Flex and rebooted only to have the same issue. Once I turned off the preamp,
everything came alive. I reset the DB and still had the same problem. When I
got home, I hooked it up to the home computer and still have the same even
with other versions of Power SDR. For example, if I listen to WWV and then
turn on the preamp, it goes from -115 to -160 with no reception at all.

Any ideas on this?

[Flexradio] Click tuning with a Locked panadapter operatation

2009-06-16 Thread Al K0VM

In various previous e-mails ...

-
The one gripe I have is the lack of an ability to lock the panadaptor.
Operating this radio is a very visual process, and I would lose the
pattern of activity when changing the main rx frequency. I realize I can
leave that alone and hunt with the sub-rx, but really it would be
desirable to have both freely available. I know this has been talked
about before, but I can't remember where to go to add my support to the
enhancement list.

Overall, a very positive experience.

-
and
-

I agree with NU8I's comments on the need to be able to lock the panadapter.

Oh, no kidding! This is perhaps the biggest problem of PowerSDR. It
makes click-tune painfully difficult to use. You have to wait a second
or two until the waterfall display starts to repaint in order to see
what is going on and where the signals have moved. If Flex could fix
only one feature this would be it for me!

---

You can ALMOST do this now... If you wish to TEST DRIVE how this might
feel in operation (assumes no RX 2)

1. Set VFO A to center the pan adapter to the range of interest.
2. Set Multi RX on.. Turn down the VFO A RX volume (right hand vertical
slider in MulitRX box )

3. Enable SPLIT and 'show TX filter on Display'
4. Click the RIGHT mouse button twice to get the RED cross hairs in the
pan adapter.
5. Click the LEFT mouse button to set VFO B to the signal you wish to
listen to.
HINT: since most casual and net operation is on 1 Khz or 500 hz
intervals, set tune step size to 500.

CAVEATS: software limitations:
1. The mouse wheel currently only operates VFO A. To fine tune a signal
move your mouse pointer into the VFO B window then use the mouse wheel.
2. Drag tunning can not be used..
3. Only one RX (VFO B) is usable with this demo.
4. Its too easy to drop out of the VFO B ( read cross hair) click tune
control mode.

CAVEATS: hardware limitations.
1. The Spur Reduction algorithm attempts to avoid DDS spurs in the VFO A
RX area (i.e. DDS + 9KHZ if). You may need to toggle RS differently for
VFO B RX than for VFO A RX.
2. The RX Image rejection is optimal for VFO A RX (i.e. DDS + 9KHZ if).
Image Rejection for VFO B RX may not be as good..

( I am not sure how WBIR effects this observation.)
3. If VFO B RX is tuned to the DDS frequency ( VFO A - 9KHZ if), it will
be tuned to the 0KHZ (DC) IF frequency.
Each of these hardware Caveats is particularly noticeable with then
SDR-1000, not so much noticeable with the F5K ( F3K ?? ) and a
non-factor with Mercury HPSDR ( uses DDC, no DDS).

Future ???
1. Obviously the demo would be more useful if the mouse wheel could
control VFO B.
2. A second level of operability could result from allowing VFO B to
control the DDS. Would have mouse wheel control and drag tuning but
still only one RX.
3. With two front panel selector buttons, full operation could be
achieved...

Button one: DDS tracks VFO A ( current normal operation)
Button two: Set DDS to current VFO A frequency ( - IF) and freeze it
there.
Both VFO A and VFO B then control software IF
frequencies within the limits of the pan adapter.

I would probably not want to run this DEMO in the heat of a contest, but
it does give a different feel to the radio.
With proper software tweeks, it could be a useful operational option
provided the hardware limitations are not objectionable (see caveats above).

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-5000A Line in VOX operation?

2009-06-15 Thread Al K0VM

Bill,
Yes I use VOX with balanced line input... The problem, I believe, is
that the front panel mic in has a hardware pre amp ( 20 db ?? ) built in
that the balanced line in does not AND the PSDR software VOX slider
takes its input from a source audio path BEFORE the MIC gain control is
applied.. Thus if you are using the Bal line in with a mic that has
with low output, you can adjust the mic level properly but the is not
enough level to operate the VOX.. If you have an external mic pre amp
feeding the Bal line in then there is enough mic level to operate the
VOX with the BAL Line in.

If the software where changed to pick the VOX signal off after the MIC
gain slider then I think VOX adjustment would more usable.

Is that the intended operation?

I checked the manual and didn't see anything to indicate that VOX only works

What is the expected VOX operation using the line in, Flexwire I/O or

A couple of things to remember about WSJT ( and WSPR) is that the sound
card selection you make in WSJT setup do not become active until you
close WSJT and restart it.. Then when it restarts, check the port

Good old windows may shuffle the port selection numbers depending on the

you start WSjt before you fire up the F5K/F3K the number for you VAC
ports may be different than is you start F5K/F3K after WSJT.

WSJT sound card configuration is the most convoluted process I have ever run
into with digi mode programs. Make sure that you have the right output channel
selected. Windows can change the device IDs around at it pleasure (grin) and I
have had this hose up WSJT in the past.

The follow KC article does a fairly good job of helping you figure out how to
make sure the sound card interface is setup correctly

I would check this first.

Re: [Flexradio] Transverters

2009-06-04 Thread Al Ward
Hello
Well maybe there is a hardware limitation in that RX2 has some limitations
in that it can only connect direct to ANT1 it appears, other modes are
RX1tap or RX2 inputstill some possibilities.
It would be nice to be able to have the 5000 with external receiver running
on two external xvtr bands like 222 and 432 and just use the A<>B button to
switch back and forth. Like I do between 6M and 222 MHz.
Still dreaming here.

Hello Bill and others
Since I have borrowed N5AC's Flex-3000 and put it on 6M, I decided to use my
Flex-5000 on 2 VHF bands. Normally RX1 is on 6M and RX2 is on 222 or any
other transverter band I choose. Now I decided to leave RX2 alone with 222
and use RX1 on 432 MHz and use the high power antenna port out the back to
drive my 432 xvtr which like Bill'e request needs the higher power. Only
problem, I can't run 10M high power out RF1, RF2, etc, and have the
frequency readout say 432.1 MHz instead of 28.1 MHz. I can drive my xvtrs
just fine with high power on 10M, I just can not change the frequency in the
XVTR table because it expects all xvtrs to use the low power combined or
split xvtr port.
So could the xvtr table also give us control of using the normal antenna
ports to drive xvtrs and still have our frequency indicated in the display?
I know it is not the 1 watt port Bill was asking for but the drive level
could also be set with a revised xvtr table that I am talking about.
Basically can the xvtr selection table also allow us to get high controlled
power out of RF1, RF2, RF3? No hardware change just software.

Re K5HY's message, I reiterate my comment made at the session at Dayton. The
transverters should have one high power output (25 -50W) and ALSO a low
power output (1 - 5) to drive tower-mounted microwave transverters. I have
been told that the low power output will be 1 milliwatt, which in no way is
enough to drive tower-mounted transverters

That is only for the 28 MHz IF (@ 0 dBm) not the 144/440 MHz IF that the V/U

Flex Guys
I have read the specs on the Flex 5000 U/V upgrade. This was one of the
major reasons I purchased my 5000 which I received 12/2007 with the intent
of using it with external microwave transverters. This radio has been great
fun and a never ending adventure to own. In the past When asked, Gerald
mentioned that there would be a low power transverter drive output. The
website mentions that it can be used with external transverters but
"requires power attenuation". Will there at least be an internal low power
tap point or internal jumper to reduce power for us who are only interested
in using the 5000 with external transverters without having to heat up an
external attenuator? I realize the power will be adjustable but it's a risky
thing to do, especially when the power level adjuasment is software
controlled, not to mention the danger of possible latency in that circuit
causing a power spike when keyed.

Harold,

I'm on my second generation Flex-Radio. Both machines (the SDR-1000 and the
Flex5000A) have been of exceptional quality and the support has been not
only far better than anything ever done in ham radio but better than one
could even dream of.

The software is the product of some of the best minds in digital signal
processing and is plainly a labor of love.

There is no reason for you to be apprehensive about getting one to work for
you and if you should encounter problems, as long as you are willing to
communicate, there should be no concern about getting good help.

You asked if I would buy the radio again. I will buy another at some point
and if there were any reason to do so I would even buy one for my mother.

Buy one. You'll love it.

I have seen this when first firing up 1.18.0. I had to uncheck the TX port

Try checking a different Tx port and then go back to the one you normally

I have been using this combination successfully for a year and a half. Now
the radio will not key the amp. Have tried changing from one port to another

The amp will key manually by shorting the center of the port to ground so
this leaves the problem in the radio.Could it be a firmware problem ? Is

Any help will be appreciated.

Re: [Flexradio] 48 KHz Sampling & Center Freq Position

2009-02-17 Thread Al Groff, K0VM

Joel,
With the Flex radios and a zoom factor of x0.5, the center of the
display can only be equal to the DDS frequency. The main receive
frequency will always be the 9khz IF above the DDS frequency. At zoom
x0.5, the display will be approximately DDS frequency plus or minus
half of the sampling rate (total approximately equal to the sampling
rate). At zoom factors greater than one, the main receive frequency can
be in the center of the display and the DDS frequency will be off the
left edge of the display. At the higher sampling rates, 9khz is closer
to the center of the display than at 48 Khz.

I don't thing there is a way to 'correct' this with the Flex hardware.
The Mercury HPSDR is a different story.

When I operate on 160 & 80 meters I run a 48 KHz sampling rate because my
noise floor is lower and I have better resolution to detect weak signals.

However, my center frequency on the panadapter is at least 3/4 of the way to
the right rather than in the center of the panadapter and unadjustable.

Is there anyway this can be changed to appear in the center as the "Center"
slider to does not do anything?

Yes, I know I can use the zoom control to adjust the display to less than a
48 KHz bandwidth and then adjust the center slider, however this is not
desirable as it reduces the viewable bandwidth. With the existing condition
I can only view 10 KHz above the center frequency and about 25 KHz below on
the panadapter rather than half & half.

Is there a way to correct this?

Re: [Flexradio] Tuning VFO B while in Split mode

2009-02-17 Thread Al Groff, K0VM

Joe,
I have taken to using multi RX instead of split for working the K5D
pile ups.. Set the secondary RX on the K5D frequency on VFO B and use
VFO A for your TX and to search for who he is coming back to... The
Mouse wheel then has control of VFO A for searching

But I think you idea has merit.

I could use some help here if someone has the answer.

Or maybe this is a bug or a future enhancement??

I'd like to be able to use the mouse wheel to tune VFO B "ONLY" while in
split mode using the mouse wheel from within the spectrum display.

I know I can hover over the VFO B frequency readout display and make changes
there, BUT I'm wondering if it's possible to do this from within the
spectrum display like I can with VFO A. Using the mouse wheel in the
spectrum display works the same for YELLOW or RED.

My thoughts would be when I click through the colored crosshairs and I'm on
YELLOW the mouse would control VFO A and when the crosshairs are RED the
mouse wheel should control VFO B. I know if the crosshairs are RED and I
click on a frequency in the spectrum display that VFO B will change to that
frequency but I'd like to be able to fine tune with the mouse wheel
afterwards.

Am I missing something here? It seems like an easy thing to do.

Re: [Flexradio] VAC change sound device #'s

2009-02-16 Thread Al Groff, K0VM
I have noted the same thing with other accessory (logging, modem)
programs that do a poor job of presenting the enumeration..
The problem is that each accessory program seems to do its own
enumeration each time is starts. Part of the difference in enumeration
depends on if Flex 5000 was opened before the accessory program was
started or after.. The Flex 5K sound devices show up in the enumeration
only after the F5K has been started and therefore the enumeration is
different. Many accessory programs save only the enumeration number
between sessions and therefore choose a different sound device if the
enumeration is changed.. A few accessory programs seem to store the
selected device name and match up the enumerated sound device by name..

WSJT and WSPR show the enumeration changes, listing the number and
device name.

I am using Logger32 for a logging and sound card software. Sometimes when I
open PowerSDR and the Logger32 software the sound devices change in the
device #'s in Logger32. The Device #'s remain the same in Logger32 but the
associated sound devices change. I am using VAC for sound.

When this happens the sound device will sometimes change to Realtek (the
motherboard sound card) and sometimes to the Flex sound device that I know
nothing about, I have never played with that.

It is not a real problem I can correct it quickly but I would like to know
what is causing this. Hopefully I have explained it clearly enough.

Not everyone is using VAC and running RTTY software on the same computer
as PowerSDR. But FSK is not really the issue. I was told at Dayton
almost two years ago that Mark frequency display (vs carrier freq.
display) should be mode dependent and would be available when FSK was
made available. I never understood why this is a requirement except for
the fact that all the other HF rigs that offer FSK RTTY use the standard
Mark frequency display.

The important thing is to display the Mark freq. We got half way there
with the CAT offset parameter. Now our logging, contesting and spotting
software are in sync with the rest of the RTTY world. Thank You!!! But
how about when I just want to set a sked with someone on RTTY. I have to
manually calculate the offset. This is not rocket science but why can't
we let the computer do it instead and save us the grief???

No it's rocket science... In fact PowerSDR already calculates the VFO
off set for CW .. always has...
Just need to have option to do the same for RTTY... Enhancement
requests have been submitted long ago..

There is no question that the 5000 and PowerSDR is the best product out
there for RTTY. This one parameter is not difficult to program so why
not do it??? It will make it an even better RTTY package.

Several times during the contest last weekend I ended up entering a

I'd love an undo button. I don't care where it is, even if it's

I have been using the 5069v3 driver with WinXP SP3. The only thing
that I had to do differently is under Setup>Audio>Primary set the output
voltage to 3.16 volts before you redo the transmitter/PA calibrations (
in the early days, Flex KC had a proceedure for measuring the tx output
voltage of sound cards.. would be better to do that than put in 3.16...
) and don't forget that you have to put in the 3.16 anytime you
rebuild the database and recalibrate . )

SDR 1000, Power SDR 1.16.1 with Delta 44 and Win XP professional SP3.

The latest and only Delta driver that is specifically recommended for
Win XP SP3 is V32 5.10.00.5069v3. There are some obvious changes
including a new control panel and certainly some functional updates as
well. The Flex Radio knowledge base seems to indicate that there could
be issues in using this update.
My question is has anyone here updated their system as described above
to operate properly? What are the tricks if any in making this combo work?

Tnx nad 73, Len

Al,

Unfortunately, Windows makes it just about impossible to change any IRQs due
to Plug-n-Play. You have to physically mode the Firewire card to a different
bus slot to get the IRQ to possibly change. The problem may be an ASIO
driver conflict and if that is the case, then adding an additional Firewire
or changing it's IRQ probably will not make any difference.

I know that the Personus can be a bit "quirky" and this may be one of the
quirks. I no longer have a Personus to test it with. Maybe someone else on
the Reflector is using a SDR1K with a Firebox and a F5K on the same computer
can add something to help get through the lock ups.

Can I run multiple instances of PowerSDR on the same computer?
[Tim] Yes, but it is dependent on the types of radios you are using. You
can currently run a FLEX-5000 and an SDR-1000 together without any problems
as long as the programs are in separate folders using separate databases.
Multiple FLEX-5000s have the issue regarding enumerating the devices on the
Firewire bus and getting the right radio associated with the correct
PowerSDR instance and the correct version of the ASIO driver. I understand
this is being worked on for the upcoming FLEX-3000 specific release of
PowerSDR and that should be applicable to using multiple FLEX-5000s
connected to the same computer/Firewire host adapter.

What is the impact of changing radios per instance of PowerSDR?
[Tim] Syncing the EEPROM data from the radio with the PowerSDR database
associated with the instance running.

Will it sense the sn change and replace the eeprom data?
[Tim] That is the way it should work.

Just checking before I try.
