Re: [Flexradio] New SDR (Software Defined Radio) User's Discussion Group.
Wouldn't it be great if, now that F5K has been discontinued, the hardware/interfacing spec could be made public, so that it can be hacked to work with cuSDR (https://plus.google.com/107168125384405552048/posts)? I guess, then we'd be able to use the F5K like an F6K. -Original Message- From: K4LCD [mailto:k4...@bellsouth.net] Sent: Friday, May 24, 2013 5:29 AM To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz; flexra...@yahoogroups.com Subject: [Flexradio] New SDR (Software Defined Radio) User's Discussion Group. [Flexradio] Question about Flex-5000 and Ameritron ARI-500 (Amplifier Auto Band Switch)
I just purchased an Ameritron ALS-600 solid state amp to eventually use with my Flex-5000A. I've been researching interfacing it with the Flex for automatic band switching. All that I've come across on the internet talks about using DDutil and a PARALLEL port (with a custom PARALLEL port cable) to send BCD data to the ARI-500. However, reading the ARI-500 manual, it says, "Interfacing to Kenwood Radios: The Computer port (CAT) is used to retrieve the frequency of the radio. When the ARI-500 is first turned on, the "Auto Information" (AI) command is sent to the radio. This command causes the Kenwood radio to output the state of the radio (frequency, mode, etc) anytime the state has changes. The ARI-500 then uses the frequency to determine the appropriate band and then selects the correct antenna. The diagram below shows how to connect a Kenwood radio with a DB-9 Com port to the ARI-500. Note that pin 7 and 8 (RTS, CTS) on the Kenwood port are connected together. This ensures that the Kenwood will send the status information to the ARI-500. The Remote port is also found on the back of the Kenwood which has the amp key line needed for the ARI-500." Since the Flex-5000 and PowerSDR emulate the Kenwood TS-2000, why can't the flex be interfaced to the ARI-500 using DDutil and the SERIAL port (even using the stock Kenwood TS-2000 to ARI-500 cable)? Seems logical to me that it would be plug and play and work with little additional configuration or wiring. Am I wrong? Re: [Flexradio] ANNOUNCE: ShuttleKraft Flexradio Controller Software nearing Alpha status!
Tony: Dual VFO control is possible with my software, because the ShuttlePRO V2 has two separate knobs in the Jog/Shuttle. So you could use the inner knob for one VFO and the outer knob for the other VFO. You can assign each element of the ShuttlePRO V2 to an individual CAT-based command. My software lets you configure anything to anything... The ShuttlePRO is a staple controller for NLE-based audio/video. I'm sure it's a good fit for the Flex SDR. *B KK2QQ > >Brad, the best DX radios let you tune both VFOs without pushing a button in >between. [Flexradio] ANNOUNCE: ShuttleKraft Flexradio Controller Software nearing Alpha status!
Hi all: I've been extremely busy working on business projects, so I haven't had time to continue my work on transforming the ShuttlePRO v2 into an awesome controller for a FlexRadio device. My software (called "ShuttleKraft") basically makes the ShuttlePRO v2 into a dedicated controller for operating a flex-radio via PowerSDR. That means 15 programmable buttons (functioning as toggle on/off, bump up/down values, mode switching, etc) as well as jog/shuttle knobs (which, together, give you ultimate flexibility in vfo tuning). The software talks to PowerSDR using CAT commands, so basically anything that be "CAT-tized" (translated into a CAT command), can be performed by the ShuttlePRO v2. No worrying about having focus on the PowerSDR windows, because the controller is dedicated to it. I've been able to allot time to the project again and will be seeking candidates for "alpha stage testing" of my software. Alpha stage means that the software is past my in-lab experimenting and is ready to be tried by knowledgeable folks for feedback purposes. Alpha is a pre-cursor to a Beta stage. Thus, installation of the software shall be manual, the UI will be a rough prototype, and the software could be unstable on your system. I will be putting out the call for Alpha stage testers AFTER this weekend. PLEASE DO NOT contact me at this point. Instructions/criteria for applying as an alpha tester shall be forthcoming. Apart from the limitations described above, the software is fully functional and works really terrifically. Once complete, the software shall be available 100% free of charge (no warranty, guarantee or support for any purpose shall be implied nor offered). 73's *Bradley KK2QQ ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
[Flexradio] New Software for ShuttlePro/PowerSDR integration [UPDATE]
I wanted to update all interested in this software development on its progress... All the "behind the scenes" coding is complete: *The software communicates accurately with PowerSDR through the CAT port (you'll need a virtual COM pair and/or DDutil set up to use) *Toggle-style CAT Commands work perfectly (i.e., anything in the CAT dictionary that is switch via an enable/disable instruction -- e.g., MON, etc.) *Level-style CAT Commands work perfectly (i.e., anything in the CAT dictionary whose level can be bumped up or down -- e.g., AF Gain, etc) *Jog dial speed and acceleration/deceleration work perfectly (for fixed or variable stepping of the VFO's) *Shuttle ring/dial works perfectly (for variable stepping of the VFO's without requiring rotational speed) *Control press and hold/repeat works perfectly (for auto-repeating of commands when a control is held down) *Control "chording" is coded and functionality is possible for future releases *Completely separate CAT actions for a control press as opposed to a control release is coded and functionality is possible for future releases *Full visual feedback of control operation is complete (for control testing, control setup and control diagnostic) With this progress achieved, I'll be moving on to the User Interface of the application, which will be used to configure/setup the control. It'll feature presets for assigning most common CAT commands as well as custom CAT command entry/assignment for those needs that are specific to a particular radio amateur. I'm trying to focus on an intuitive UI design so that support issues are minimized if not even existent. I will be looking to enlist some beta testers -- NOT YET --, but in the near future. I'll post an appropriate solicitation to the reflector WHEN I am ready. *Bradley KK2QQ ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] TUN sticking (staying on) on ATU (5KA) -- SOLVED
The suggested 5KA hardware reset along with the earlier database reset and reboot seems to have solved this problem. Also of note is that just preceding this situation, no audio was coming from the radio -- not from the headphone jack, nor the rear speaker jack (Yes, I did try adjusting settings in the mixer first)... however, the database reset fixed that. However, the issue progressed into the autotune problem. Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR 2.0.x Button Keyboard Equivalents?
True, it's a nice tuning knob, but seems silly for 15 buttons to not be programmable to personal favorites. Like it would be nice to have the top row correspond to favorite bands, the left button to toggle squelch, the bottom row to be favorite filters and other favorites. I thought that was the point (It's advertised on the Flex Site)? It's not too late for them to add such a thing? Re: [Flexradio] New 5000A User - TX Audio (severe distortion) Issues
Here's an update on my progress: Per Brett and Gerald, I rewired the Heil Mic cable on the XLR side distinctly and separately use all three pins of the XLR connector (only 2 were being used and the shield was tied to the Mic negative). I rewired the 8 pin side to have both the mic shield and the PTT shield on pin 5. Mic pos, Mic neg and PTT on the proper pins per the 5K manual. The 8 pin connector cover is not attached to anything. So far, that seems to have solved the mic audio distortion issue. I'll be switching to using the rear panel connection later this week. As far as RFI, I've temporarily hooked up an MFJ-931 Artificial Ground (until I can set up a RF suppressor ground in the spring). That seems to be working as well. The RF ground current is showing considerably strong on the unit's meter. I will likely put together the "air choke" that Harvey recommended. Seems easy to construct and I'd think would lessen the necessary work of the Artificial Ground. Many thanks to all who sent suggestions and recommendations. Everything you have said so far points to RF getting back into the radio/computer/speakers. Your first post seemed to indicate you had transmit audio feedback from either radio speakers that were reproducing transmit audio because the Monitor button was activated in PSDR, or you had a second receiver in the shack to listen to your transmit audio. If you want to listen to your transmit audio, you MUST prevent the audio from getting back into the microphone and creating a big feedback loop. If you want to listen to your transmit audio, you MUST prevent the audio from getting back into the microphone and creating a big feedback loop. Since the first post, your symptoms now sound like a classic case of RF feedback (different from audio feedback). You speak of a 30M antenna, first an end fed model and then a dipole fed with coax. I'm a little confused here. 30 meters does not permit SSB operation; only CW or digital. Am I understanding you correctly? Also, a dipole is inherently a balanced antenna, which you are feeding with coax, an unbalanced feed line. Very common practice I grant you, but one that is also very prone to bringing RF back into the shack. Do you have a dummy load? That would be a much better test if you have one. Hook up the dummy load in place of the antenna, and try things again. Remember to use headphones to listen to your transmit audio so you don't have audio feedback, and check things out at several different drive (output power) levels. Watch your mike levels as you transmit, adjusting mike gain so the mike indication on the meter does not go over 0 dB, even on voice peaks. HF RF can cause the same type of sounds from powered speakers that VHF FM can, so I don't think you are having an issue with the V/U modules being keyed by mistake. I also have a 5000 with all the goodies, and totally love it. I hope some of these suggestions will help you get the issues worked out successfully. Let me know please of any of these ideas work for you. 73, Army - AE5P -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Bradley Feldman Sent: Sunday, December 05, 2010 12:26 PM To: 'Bret Mills'; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] New 5000A User - TX Audio (severe distortion) Issues One more thing. Also remember XLR audio is balanced so you don't want either of the XLR mic pins grounded or tied to the shield or chassis. Sometimes NO ground at all on an XLR connector worksyou get these ground loops and current floating around which makes the audio connection UNbalanced, and greats hum, RF paths, etc. Another thing...take a look at the innards of your mic cable. If it's an XLR, you should have twisted pair for the two mic leads, which may or may not be wrapped in a shield. For XLR, think of your audio line much as you would think of a balanced antenna & feedline. I put extra ferrites on the PC side of the stock flex firewire cable. The issue remains. Any ideas of what to do next or what additional info is necessary to help me? *Bradley KK2QQ ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/
