Re: [Flexradio] a future feature - digital mode id displayed on the panadapter

2009-06-02 Thread Ken N9VV
Hi Jim, use Google (or your favorite search engine) and look up
the term Cognitive Computing. Frank AB2KT has written papers
about Cognitive Computing and how it might be used in Ham Radio to
automatically classify signals. I believe he presented a paper
about that topic at the Dayton 2008 Flex meeting. You can probably
find it in the Flex KB.

Jim Madden wrote:

Wouldn't it be great if the panadapter had a feature that could be turned on
or off that displayed an ID by a signal that indicated what kind of a signal
is present.

This would be especially useful for digital modes when one is using third
party software to decode digital signals and trying to determine what kind
of digital signal to decode.

[Flexradio] posted for Alan K2WS: re: Pulse tuning

2009-05-09 Thread Ken N9VV

Alan posted this Feature Request #2120 in March.

http://support.flex-radio.com/ReviewBug.aspx?id=2120it=F;

Report Detail:

The Tune function would be considerably enhanced if the user could
select a pulse mode. Tuning a Linear amplifier with a low duty
cycle pulse instead of a constant carrier has great advantages.
While examining the RF output on a scope setup to display a
trapezoid, the amplifier may safely be driven to full power as
long as needed and tuned for best linearity. Tuning at full power
is the most accurate way! With duty cycles less then 20% the
amplifier will never overheat. Finally, if QSK were available (
like break-in CW) and the 5000 could switch to receive during the
80% off time, one could actually hear what's going on on the
tuneup frequency! Keeps user out of trouble..

Three menu settings should be included.
  1. Pulse rate -# of pulses per second from 8 to 24
  2. ON Pulse width -for setting ON Pulse duration from 1 to 20
milliseconds
  3. Mode select -continuous or pulsed. Changes mode color of
TUN button on front panel.

I assign PowerSDR to core-1 and all other competing activity to core-0
to try and steer the DPC traffic away from PowerSDR.

 Hmm, OK.

Two. Check your processes using Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del). Delete

Well, I started with a virgin XP 'Home' system, installed the stuff

My laptop at work (Win2000) always loads up with pctspk.exe, a

It then gets immediately replaced by ReaderSL.exe, a speed loader

I'm using an SDR1000/FA66 and running WinXP Home Media Edition, 968
Mb ram, 2.2 GHZ processor, about five years old. Computer usage with
MixW and PowerSDR running is between 30 and 40%, but I watch what
else I run when PowerSDR is running.

As they say on the Red Green Show, we're all in this together.

Yup. Working on chopping and channeling XP now. So far software
updates and the firewall are gone as are the Microsoft network client,
printer support, and QoS in the networking stack. Now I am using

I recommend that all multi-core enthusiasts use this free utility
from Ed in Chicago: http://www.geocities.com/edgemeal_software/
It allows you to assign any application to any core and keeps it that way.

So if you run multiple applications, you can separate them and hope that
the Operating System has enough cycles to do fast context switching
without a DPC penality :-)

 - remember that about 99% of all software available today is programmed to
run on a single core processor. Hence it isn't multithreaded and thus in the
vast majority of cases you won't see a speed up, as the second, third or
fourth core is just sitting there idling, or handling simple operating

[Flexradio] [Fwd: Six meter band opening on the Flex 5000]

2008-05-31 Thread Ken N9VV
I am forwarding this for Alan K2WS.

 Original Message
Subject:Six meter band opening on the Flex 5000
Date: Sat, 31 May 2008 17:57:57 -0400
From: Alan Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz

Thursday afternoon I fired up the Flex 5000a - looking for 10 meter band
openings. After working a few Southern stations on the FM Repeaters at
29.640/.540 and 29.680/.580 mHz, I thought I'd listen on 6 meters. SIX
was open! and I could hear stations in the deep South - even on an F12
C31-XR tribander.

I don't have a resonant antenna for 6 meters, but best results were
obtained using the F12 240-N Magnum 40 meter 2 element array at 70ft- no
kidding. Using the 240-N, the signal to noise was best and the SWR was
under 1.5 : 1. I could hear the band noise increase when I switched in
the 40 meter array!

Like a new ham, I gave it a try. I worked:
WD4JB in Miss.@ EM64 on 50.145mHz
W4AVY in Ala. @ EM63 on 50.125mHz
KI4ROF in Tenn @EM55 on 50.175mHz.

The power out as indicated on a PowerMaster meter was 20 watts. This
summer I'm planning on putting up arrays for 6, 2 and 23cm to work
SSB/CW/AM etc ! Can't wait to see what kind of 6 meter performance the
5000 can produce - on real 6 meter ANTENNA!

Re: [Flexradio] VAC vCOM

2008-02-09 Thread Ken N9VV
Hi Ray, I also remember that there was an .INI file associated with
vCOM. You can edit it to change anything that would be done by the
configurator. I think that in ancient times (circa: 2005) we had to edit
the com pairs in the .ini file before the configurator was born :-)

Perhaps the Vista folks can edit the .ini to setup whatever they need in
vCOM?

 Tim,

My experience with vCom under Vista is that vCom itself works well.
However, the configurator does not work properly. As long as you leave the
virtual COM port pairs at their default port numbers and do not try to
 change them, all is well.

Re: [Flexradio] gain on the sdr1000

The idea is to have your S9 signal generator (Elecraft XG-1
for example) show *exactly the same peak reading* no matter
how you set the PREAMP. It is a beautiful software defined
radio design concept - now implemented by Flex in the
PowerSDR software.

If so, this has always been the case with my SDR1000. I
receive the
highest noise level reading with the preamp off and the
lowest noise
level with the preamp on. It sounds backwards but I do notice an
increase in the signals against the noise with the preamp
on.Edwin

[Flexradio] [OT] article about SDR cell phones

2007-09-23 Thread Ken N9VV
Good press for SDR: http://slashdot.org/articles/07/09/23/0024219.shtml

September 23, 2007
Prototype
Software That Fills a Cellphone Gap
By MICHAEL FITZGERALD

VANU BOSE is the son of a fabled engineer, but he garnered no mercy when
he presented his big idea at a technical conference in 1996. Mr. Bose’s
graduate work at M.I.T. involved using software to handle the radio
function in a cellular phone. He remembers that after he successfully
demonstrated his technology, an audience member stood up and dismissed
it with: “Congratulations! You’ve just invented the world’s most
expensive cellphone.”

Mr. Bose, a personable man, shrugged off the criticism. He expected that
over time, the increasing processing speed of chips would make such
phones much cheaper.

But he didn’t want to make the phones. He wanted to remake the wireless
base station, the guts of the world’s cellular networks, by changing
them from complex systems that incorporate hardware, software and the
electronics needed for wireless communications into systems run
primarily with software.

Most of us don’t think of our cellphones as radios, but they are. Any
wireless device uses a radio. Figuring out a way to operate the radio
with software has obvious potential advantages: for one, it’s easier and
cheaper to upgrade software than it is to send field technicians to
cellular towers to add components. And a software-based radio — the
industry calls it software-defined radio — could handle multiple
cellular signals at the same time, the way a computer can run a browser,
a word processor and a spreadsheet all at once.

So, in theory, letting cellular companies accommodate new spectrum or
technologies by doing software upgrades could expand coverage and
services while possibly reducing what we pay for them.

That promise prompted Mr. Bose to start a company in 1998, while he was
still in graduate school. He called it Vanu Inc. (The family surname was
already in use: his father, Amar, had founded the Bose Corporation in 1964.)

The company bumped along primarily on military contracts for developing
software-based radio devices. (The armed forces typically use different
kinds of radios but need them all to talk to one another, which has
prompted two large research projects, Speakeasy and the current Joint
Tactical Radio System.) Then, as cheap semiconductor technology caught
up with the needs of his software, he was able to pursue commercial
markets. He now has several customers for the company’s AnyWave wireless
base stations for cellphone networks.

Mr. Bose is not the first to pursue converting radios to software. The
idea had been developed in the late 1980s, and Joseph Mitola, an
engineer now at the Mitre Corporation, a research organization, is
credited with being the first to discuss an effective software radio
architecture, at a conference in 1991.

Well-established companies like Motorola and Ericsson now use elements
of software-defined radio for their base stations. But Mr. Bose was the
first to come to market with software that could handle multiple
networks with the same equipment.

Software radio appears to offer an elegant solution to what has been a
vexing problem: how to have a single handset, like a cellphone,
communicate across multiple networks.

For instance, the G.S.M. standard, for global system for mobile
communications, is used broadly in Europe, and most notably in the
United States by ATT. But it does not work with phones built for the
C.D.M.A. standard, for code division multiple access, that is used in
the United States by Verizon and others and is popular in South Korea.

So, as a Verizon cellphone user, when I spent several weeks in England
this summer, I was instructed to rent a phone from Vodafone. It took
several attempts over several days to get my calls to forward from my
Verizon number, and I paid for two phones for the better part of a month.

Mr. Bose’s software makes it possible for the network to switch modes
automatically. While the AnyWave Base Station still includes components
like wireless transmitters and receivers, the company ultimately would
like to focus on selling its software to other businesses that build
base stations.

That would position Vanu to become “the Microsoft of the wireless base
station industry,” said Bruce Sachs, a general partner at Charles River
Ventures, which recently put money into an $8 million funding round for
Vanu.

Mr. Sachs says that the market for base stations is worth billions of
dollars by itself and that as cellular operators upgrade over time to
technologies like WiMax or H.S.D.P.A., for high-speed downlink packet
access, wireless markets worldwide will be open to Vanu.

There is also potential for markets that are just emerging, like that
for “femto cells.” (In mathematics, a femto is a quadrillionth.) The
cells will plug into a power outlet and bolster cellular coverage for a
home or business. But that is in

Re: [Flexradio] Virtual Serial Port alternative

2007-08-17 Thread Ken N9VV
Hi Bob, I am one of the happy campers who enjoys using vCOM every day
without any problems. The Eltima product might be an expensive solution
looking for a problem.

I use vCOM for both CAT connectivity (6-16 pair) and CW keying (7-17
pair) between MixW and PowerSDR. I have used vCOM with EasyPal digital
SSTV and other digi programs without a glitch. vCOM has worked
faithfully for several years (since 2005)
http://www.philcovington.com/SDR.html

I want to thank Phil Covington for his generous contribution of vCOM
along with:
# .NET 1.1 Serial Port Support Class
# .NET 1.1 Socket Utilities Class
# Serial to TCP Bridge
# SharpDSP Console for the Softrock
# The beautiful live analog S-Meter (patterned after John KC5NRA)
# XML serialization for PowerSDR
# SharpDevelop alternative compiler examples and demonstration
# Mono testing and exploration
# His innumerable contributions to Mercury and HPSDR
# His new QuickSilver VERB DDC design
# and now SharpDSP2 for the QuickSilver

de ken n9vv

Robert McGwier wrote:
vCom has served us very well indeed thanks to Phil and as always, the
price was indeed right. Many experience drop outs of the serial lines
between your external programs and the PowerSDR. I have looked for an
alternative to vCom for quite a while that might fix this issue since I
could monitor ports and see that all applications were still talking and
that the vCom ports were becoming black holes. Closing and opening
fixed the problem but this is not an acceptable solution.

For those of you who are new to PowerSDR and Flex radio, there are no
wires between your logging and rotor and contesting programs and the
radio. It is done VIRTUALLY inside the computer. The virtual glue we
have been using is vCom. I am recommending an alternative, VSPD, if you
find yourself having trouble with vCom.

Unfortunately, there is no really usable free alternative I can find.
Development on all of this was stymied when we were going to move to
Visual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 but developmental delays have
 prevented this.

I want every SDR-1000 and Flex 5000 to have the best possible experience
with their radio so I wish to recommend an alternative that is NOT free.
You can download it and try it for 14 days and prove to yourself that
you no longer have drop outs.

 http://www.eltima.com/products/vspdxp/
 http://www.eltima.com/de/products/vspdxp/

I recommend if you download the trial version, you unload vCom (this is
easy) and load this as a replacement for the fourteen days it is free to
use. Unlike VAC, it will not start shouting by me now but will just
say it is time for you to purchase when you try to open the control
panel. I have run this product now for two months since it was
recommended to me by someone here to try. I believe that was Ken, N9VV,
but I am uncertain. If it was Ken, thank you, if it was not Ken, my
apologies for not writing down who it was.

Here are the things I do know. I have not had a virtual serial port
drop out in two months. I have not had the occasional other problems
that I believe were associated with vCom.

The product is not cheap. It is a flat $100.00 for a single copy. If 21
of you band together, it is $50.00 each. I can recommend it as
wonderfully easy to use, as easy as vCom. The GUI is no more functional
that vCom but VSPD has more capabilities than vCom which you can find
out by trying it yourself for a free 14 day trial.

I spent the $100 to make sure it was sound before I recommended it. I can.

[Flexradio] pix of new FLEX-5000 arriving...

2007-08-08 Thread Ken N9VV
I put together a few pictures of what the new packaging looks like. It
is solid and well thought out. There are surprises in the box. I know
you will be as thrilled as I was to receive your new FLEX-5000
 http://www.n9vv.com/FLEX-5000-arrives-N9VV.html

First impressions:
-
o The rig is heavy and solidly built. I thought it would be about like
the SDR-1000. It is much more solid and has really professional
attention to details.

o I never listened to WWV on 15Mhz because my Jupiter couldn't hear
it. I can now click through ALL the WWV stations on 2,5,10,15, and even
20Mhz with the FLEX-5000.

o The preamp comes on automatically on the higher bands and the audio
stays exactly where you put it for best listening.

o Setup is so easy that you will think you missed something. Hook up
some powerpole connectors, your speakers, an antenna, and a Firewire
cable to your PC and you are all set to enjoy your new rig. There is no
more XG-1 signal level, image, or frequency adjustments! those
adjustments are all done at the factory now.

o My new rig has been on PSK31 and CW and has not missed a beat. I
was always impressed with my SDR-1000. This second generation from Flex
easily surpasses it.

o I believe SDR has finally turned the corner from a hardware
curiosity and experimental platform to a viable solid performer that can
hold it's own against anything in the Ham market.

all the best,

the 300Khz filter option addresses an END USER ADDITION of a filter on
the RFE board. This is an unsupported MOD option for those hams who need
special BP filters for LF operation (I think).

The explanation is on page 71 of the 1.8.0 Operations Manual:

Enable 300kHz Filter: Engages the custom
filter bank on the RFE on low frequencies.
This is only useful if the custom filter
bank is populated with a low frequency filter
(not typical).

from page 86 of the Operations Manual in the Noise Reduction section:

Block LMS: We have implemented a fast Block
LMS (least means square) routine. This routine
is faster than the original routine, gives more
taps in the filter, and will work on I/Q signals,
which enables BIN (binaural audio) to remain available

For more information about LMS algorithms, one might start with Wikipedia:

Hi Elan, if you or a buddy are members of the ARRL, you can view all
their product reviews. The ARRL has thoroughly tested the IC-7800, the
FT-2000 and the SDR-1000. I believe the ARRL Laboratory tests will be a
much more reliable starting point than any subjective judgment based on
a single ham's hearing, ANT, PC, sound card or FA-66, and skill in
setting up PowerSDR.

One method you might consider is finding a Ham in your area who already
has an SDR-1000 setup and operational with a good quality sound
subsystem. You can tune and operate his station and have first hand
experience. Have you asked the FLEX email list for a reference to
someone in your part of the world?

The internal keyer supports two inputs. We call these inputs the primary
and secondary connections. The primary connection will override the
secondary input. This was designed with the idea that the secondary
connection might be used for automatic CW generation while the primary
could be used with manual paddles to override the automatic output.

Primary: Select the connection to be used for the primary connection.
Selecting “SDR” allows use of the jack on the back of the SDR-1000.

Secondary: Select the connection to be used for the secondary
connection. Selecting CAT will allow use of the COM port that is
currently being used by the CAT connection. This is useful as some
programs allow both CAT commands and COM port line keying for CW. Note
that the lower two controls will not show up if None is selected.

Re: [Flexradio] Manual notch filter?

2007-07-10 Thread Ken N9VV
Interestingly, in the digi world (PSK31) both HamScope and MixW have
notch filters built right into their waterfall's. You simply right click
on the offending signal and notch it out (up to about 40db I think).

 Just some wishful thinking :-)

 Dave

I've advocated that there be some kind of quiver of manual notch filters
that you could drag and drop over the offending signals.

Unlike conventional notch filters, they would stay in place until you
dragged them off the panadapter or spectrum displays wherever you could
 place them.

I also suggested it look kind of like an arrow so there was room at the
top of the gadget to use the scroll wheel (after a click on the top) to
 adjust the notch's width.

The right click isn't the right solution, because it's already tied up in
 the very important click-to-vfo functionality.

 Larry Wo0Z

PS, an interesting use for a manual notch that has just occurred to me and
could be SDR specific would be to informally create a comb filter for
RTTY. I don't know if one always would want one, but there have been
times where overlapping RTTY signals have made me wish for a comb, but
maybe this sort of feature would be enough in terms of having it. I don't
know if I'd want a full time comb filter for RTTY because one can tune
well enough without a perfect shift. Start tossing in a comb filter and
more precise tuning is probably needful.

[Flexradio] N4HY + K5SDR defend Ham Radio at FCC

2007-07-09 Thread Ken N9VV
We Hams owe Bob N4HY and Gerald K5SDR a standing ovation at the next
public meeting! Bob and Gerald defended Ham Radio when the FCC rules for
SDR (Software Defined Radio) and CDR (Cognitive Defined Radio) were
being formulated. The Federal Register stands as a testament to the
power of their persuasive and well articulated arguments in front of
such a demanding audience. In the message below, Bob recounts some of
the encounter with the FCC.

Raise your glasses and join me in a hearty toast to Bob and Gerald for
their unselfish work on behalf of us all.

 Original Message
Date: Mon, 09 Jul 2007 11:13:59 -0400
From: Robert McGwier [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* High Performance Software Defined Radio Discussion List *

Gerald Youngblood and I went to the F.C.C. and we gave a talk and
discussed their proposed rule making. I believe you can see the impact
we had throughout this document thought I don't claim we wrote any piece
of it. We pleaded for them to not get in the way of a successful move
of amateur radio into the almost inevitable future where larger pieces
of it were done digitally with software and cognitive radios. We proved
then, and we have continued to supply them and the ARRL CTO with
information (ammunition) that shows amateur radio operators are doing
INNOVATIVE development that is simply not being done elsewhere and much
of it in SDR and CDR. One of the best papers you can find anywhere on
the foundations for CDR (the mathematical tools) is in QEX and written
by Frank Brickle, AB2KT!

In the end, they told us that if amateur radio SDR's did not self
police and provide transmit frequency protection, and removal of
completely automatic scanning outside of amateur bands that we were
likely to face serious certification of a type that would not be
affordable. Now I know that faced with this, we could come up with
open source means of authentication that would pass, but the expense
would be onerous. I personally might personally be in serious trouble
if I attempted to provide this. In the end, I think we are simply going
to have to live with small pieces of firmware at a minimum that prevent
unauthorized use of amateur SDR equipment outside of the amateur bands.

Yes, we argued strongly that almost all amateur radio equipment could be
easily modified to transmit out of band. I offered to bring in an
unmodified transceiver and modify it in less than five minutes to show
how easy it typically was. I was told that I should not volunteer to
commit a crime on federal property and that they were aware of this.
The F.C.C. is responding to external pressure from all sorts of quarters
from the White House to commercial entities like Cisco to NTIS, and the
intelligence community as well as D.O.D. The schizophrenic aspects of
this are almost ludicrous. You find one D.O.D. office wanting to
support you, buy yours toys, help you help them, and another wanting to
kill the entire effort. It is bewildering.

Given this order, which is now enforceable law since it was placed in
the Federal Register, I expect more radio manufacturers to look at this
order and jump into the SDR world more completely.

I think that, overall, with these competing pressures, the F.C.C.
struck a reasonable balance between the hysteria on the parts of some
and the desires to reinvigorate amateur radio in particular but radio
development in general in the U.S. One only has to visit places like
the Wireless group at V.P.I. and other places to realize that S.D.R. and
C.D.R. are having a major impact on the new engineers and communications
scientists being trained at many universities.

When Frank Brickle and I gave our S.D.R. course last fall, we had HALF
of the entire senior electrical engineering class take the course and
they did not know us from Adam's house cat and many were graduating, so
it was a risk. That was impressive, not to mention a fantastic time.

Re: [Flexradio] audio punch

2007-05-31 Thread Ken N9VV
I would like to jump in and ask about real-world measurements. From
what I hear on the air, most guys rely on the *totally subjective*
assessment of another Ham to tell them about their audio. This is
great if the Receiving Ham is a talented audiophile but what about
his *hearing*, his *speakers* or *headphones*, his *receiver* and
his *ears* ?
-
So instead, how about using the *SWEEP* function in the PowerSDR
*TEST* tab to generate a known range of frequencies from 50hz to
4000hz (or your upper limit is) and have the other ham make a screen
dump of his panadapter so you can actually SEE WHAT HE IS RECEIVING?
-
Perhaps some enterprising and talented Flexer can setup a UltraVNC
server to show us his Rx panadapter live so we can contact his
station and see the full effect of COMPRESSION, COMPANDERS,
EQUALIZERS, and outboard equipment.
-
Would the sweep in any way simulate a real voice? or does the test
need to be more sophisticated?
-
Or course when the FLEX-5000 is released, it will display a real
world picture of both Tx and Rx simultaneously using the new FULL
DUPLEX capabilities. Then you can see, hear, and adjust in real time
and know exactly what each adjustment is accomplishing.
-

Re: [Flexradio] [SPAM] I got ssb working but...

2007-05-16 Thread Ken N9VV
Hi Bill, the Noise Gate is not ANTI-VOX. It can be enabled with or
without VOX. Please check the Operating Manual page 48:

GATE: click to enable the Noise Gate and adjust its level with
either the slider or the textbox. See also the Setup Form-Transmit
Tab. When transmitting, a bar graph will show just below the slider
control. The green part of this bar graph shows the portion of the
sound level that will not open the Noise Gate; the red part the
portion that will. The level should be adjusted such that ambient
noise will not open the Noise Gate, but a normal voice level will.
Hint: The Noise Gate can (and should) be enabled in all situations
where ambient noise will render your transmissions less clear,
irrespective of whether VOX is engaged.

I've followed the ediro manual and some profiles and have SSB working.
Not perfect but it does sound ok using the MIX to hear myself.

One issue, whether VOX or MOX, there is a slight time issue, a hum and then
 the xmit drops.

I can't find where to cut that time down
If contesting or dxing, it would be long enough to cause problem

So...in VOX or MOX, I transmit, and then either stop talking or click MOX, I
hear a hum for a couple micro secs, and then the SDR goes back to receive.

 I have a Vox setting of 37
 A Gate setting of -144
(isn't Gate what we used to call 'anti-vox')

[Flexradio] [Fwd: 4.05 driver not installed]

2007-05-15 Thread Ken N9VV

 Original Message
Subject: Re[2]: 4.05 driver not installed
Date: Tue, 15 May 2007 10:38:18 +0700
From: Eugene Muzychenko [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then I tried START -- Programs -- Virtual Audio Cable and
immediately got an error message Driver not installed.

It seems to be an installer bug. Please open the Device Manager (see
VAC help file how to open it), locate Virtual Audio Cable device in
Sound and Multimedia branch and enable it.

I will release a fix soon.

Regards,
Eugene

Thanks Dear José,
well two of us have had the same failure. I am not at all sure what
causes the Driver Not Installed message. I tried my Registry Cleaner
and a reboot and nothing seemed to help. I hope that Eugeme M. will
respond today with an idea.

Re: [Flexradio] Getting strange 60 Hz buzz on WWV's signal

2007-05-08 Thread Ken N9VV
Hi Bob, I noticed the exact same thing last night. I was really
surprised. WWV on my panadapter looked very strange on both 5Mhz and
10Mhz. Today it looks perfectly normal. I wondered if it was an
atmospheric effect or solar wind hitting our upper atmosphere?

When I tune in WWV on either 15 MHz or 10 MHz WWV's carrier is accompanied

When I tune off their carrier the buzzing modulation disappears. I don't
get this phenomenon on any other carrier, on any other band or mode, receive
or transmit. This just started a few days ago on my SDR1K and nothing in
the shack has been changed to cause this. Does anyone have any idea what
 may be causing this?
