[Freevo-users] mpv vs. mplayer

2016-02-14 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I don't know if this is still active, but I'm gonna try...

I'd like to use mpv with my freevo-1 box. But, while mplayer2 kept
compatibility, mpv doesn't, and most of the options don't work, so freevo
and mpv don't get along.

I've tried to remove things in mplayer.py, but now I'm stuck. And for some
reason, I don't get logs any more so I can't tell what is failing now.

Is anyone using freevo1+mpv? Should I stick with mplayer?

thanks

[Freevo-users] bookmarks

2014-06-01 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hello.

Is the list still working, at user level?
Well, I have wanted to ask something for a long time, and although it might
be late, I'm going to.
My question is about bookmarks when watching videos. When I started using
freevo, if I stopped a video, it resumed about ten seconds earlier that
point. Or I could press rec and have one or several bookmarks for later.
Such an useful feature. But now it's gone. I didn't realize when this was
removed.
The question is: is this feature really removed, or is there a way to
enable/disable it? I'm using the latest version and searched through the
config file. But I don't think I've missed it.

thanks
Alberto

Re: [Freevo-users] [Freevo-devel] The future of Freevo(.org)

2014-02-15 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hello everybody.

Although I still receive these mails, I don't read them and I just noticed
the news.
This might sound as if, in some way, I'm answering to what Dischi tought:
less and less users. However, in my case, that's not true. I'm a big fan of
freevo. I think it's a great piece of software, and although I miss some
feaures (that freevo2 might have had), I still use it and probably will use
for long long time.
I bought a box to run freevo (p-iv ht, 3GHz) like 8 years ago (in the times
of freevo-1.6, I think) and I still use the same hardware. And I still
can't say it's completely configured to do what I want, because there are
many options and you always want to try new things.
I tried other things, like mythtv and xbmc in another partition. Bloatware,
if you ask me. Now I'm using that partition with freevo too, for testing
purposes. I had to reinstall so many times... ;)

A big thanks to Dischi, Jason, Duncan and all the people that, in some way
or another, have made it possible to enjoy Freevo for a long time, and
still for a longer time to come.

thanks, gracias
Alberto

PD: I'd better make a few last questions in the next few days, hehe :p

Re: [Freevo-users] can't control freevo while watching movies

2013-08-05 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I found the problem, and forgot to post it. I'm sending cc to freevo-devel
too, just in case.
Well, I installed all the old kaa packages, and the upgraded them to git,
one by one. I found
out that kaa-display causes my problem. So now I have kaa-display-0.1 and
everyhting is fine, but if I upgrade to kaa-display-git, I lose the control
over freevo again.

Hi.

Let's get this clear: squeeze is old-stable, wheezy is the current stable,
and jessie is testing.
Actually, while I was using squeeze, everything worked fine. My problems
began with the upgrade to wheezy. I don't want to upgrade to jessie/testing
if I can help it.
Anyway, besides this, there must be something wrong with freevo if it can't
control mplayer.

possible, I don't want to install anything from testing.

[Freevo-users] can't control freevo while watching movies

2013-06-29 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I recently upgraded my debian box to wheezy, and then I was forced to
reinstall freevo and mplayer. I had to go to python-2.7 and freevo-git.
Well, everything installed fine, more or less, and I managed to make freevo
run again (btw, I had to remove the FULLSCREEN option and I didn't see it
documented anywhere). Now, when I watch movies, I lose control. Both lirc
and keyboard stop working.
I tried running the same command that mplayer runs outside freevo, and it
ansers to both lirc and keyboard. It's like freevo blocks the events. I
also tried with my old local_conf.py file, and a new one from scratch. Same
result. When I listen to music, the behaviour is right. It must be
something with the video plugin.
I've tried both mplayer and mplayer2 (before the postproc thing changed,
you know, vf=pp).

thanks a lot
Alberto

Re: [Freevo-users] mplayer2 & vf:pp

2012-04-07 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi again.

I answer to myself. I still don't know how to trick freevo but I got a
working version of mplayer2.
short guide:

To get the git repository:
git clone
git://git.mplayer2.org/mplayer2-build.git

cd mplayer2-build
./init--shallow<-- this gets the whole source code
play with mplayer-options, if you want, and then:
make -j 6
make install <- build as usual

Now, the trick is, before init, you must:

git reset --hard 6da38f

This will take you to the point before the commit that changed libpostproc
and vf:pp stopped working. They say that with and external libpostproc it
should work, but it doesn't for me. After this, init, make, etc, as before.
But remember not to update mplayer2 again.

see you
Alberto

[Freevo-users] mplayer2 & vf:pp

2012-04-06 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I don't know if any of you has mplayer2 instead of mplayer. FYI, it is a
fork, website here:

http://www.mplayer2.org/

The main difference for me is that matroska support is better. Like
mplayer, mplayer2 is under development, and recently, I upgraded. My
mistake. At some point, they made a change that makes vf:pp not work. To
put it short:

freevo@tinglao:~/.freevo/log$ cat mplayer-stdout-1001-1333736657.log
MPlayer2 8cd7152 (C) 2000-2012 MPlayer Team
CPU vendor name: GenuineIntel max cpuid level: 5
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz (Family: 15, Model: 3, Stepping: 4)
extended cpuid-level: 8
extended cache-info: 67133504
Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNowExt: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1 SSSE3: 0
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX MMX2 SSE SSE2 CMOV
Compiled against libavutil version 51.25.0
Compiled against libavcodec version 54.11.0
Compiled against libavformat version 54.2.0
Compiled against libswscale version 2.1.0
get_path('codecs.conf') -> '/home/freevo/.mplayer/codecs.conf'
Reading /home/freevo/.mplayer/codecs.conf: Can't open
'/home/freevo/.mplayer/codecs.conf': No such file or directory
Reading /etc/mplayer/codecs.conf: 162 audio & 361 video codecs
vo: x11 uninit called but X11 not initialized..
freevo@tinglao:~/.freevo/log$ cat mplayer-stderr-1001-1333736657.log
Option vf: pp doesn't exist.
Error parsing commandline option "-vf": Option parameter could not be parsed
freevo@tinglao:~/.freevo/log$

Of course, just running mplayer2 without the vf parameters works fine.
I'm trying to go back to an old working version, but I'm not good with git.
And even if I could, I wish to get rid of this problem, and upgrade
mplayer2 when I want.
Is it possible to override this?

thanks

Re: [Freevo-users] evdev

2012-03-20 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I can't make it work. I build the driver but it makes no difference. Then,
in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf I added this:

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "NOVA T-500 Remote" # Or whatever you want to call it
MatchProduct "IR-receiver inside an USB DVB receiver|Hauppauge WinTV
Nova-T-500|*Hauppauge*" # Replace this with your device name.
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "evdev"
Option "event_key_remap" "352=28" # and so on.
#CodeChangedFrom=CodeChangedTo
EndSection

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "Gamepad q3" # Or whatever you want to call it
MatchProduct "DragonRise Inc. DragonRise USB Gamepad " # Replace this
with your device name.
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "evdev"
Option "event_key_remap" "290=28 1=28 42=288" # and so on.
EndSection

I tried with the remote and a simple gamepad. No change. I have the feeling
that it doesn't match, but:

root@tinglao:/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d# evtest /dev/input/event1
Input driver version is 1.0.0
Input device ID: bus 0x3 vendor 0x79 product 0x1 version 0x110
Input device name: "DragonRise Inc. DragonRise USB Gamepad "

root@tinglao:/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d# evtest /dev/input/event5
Input driver version is 1.0.0
Input device ID: bus 0x3 vendor 0x2040 product 0x8400 version 0x100
Input device name: "IR-receiver inside an USB DVB receiver"
Supported events:

also, I've tried removing the MatchProduct line and the same. Where can I
see the events that go to X?

thanks

[Freevo-users] evdev

2012-03-18 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I have remote working with evdev. The one which comes with Hauppauge Nova.

root@tinglao:/etc/X11# lsusb
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 2040:8400 Hauppauge WinTV Nova-T-500

I've been trying to configure it with lirc, but I can't, it seems that it
works as an evdev device. With no configuration, arrows and poweroff
buttons work, but that's all. So I've been looking for a way to use all the
buttons. Do I need to make anything in freevo too? AFAIK, it's like another
keyboard, right? I'd like to do the same with a gamepad so I don't have to
deal with old emulators that need devices be always created .

Thanks a lot
Alberto

I remember a few days before the release of beta-2 I was using svn just
fine, so maybe this is caused by some of the latest changes. I don't know if
I can go back.
I'm using debian stable, with python-2.6.6. Kaa and freevo builds fine, with
all dependencies.

thanks

[Freevo-users] freevo cache

2011-02-09 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I've noticed a weird behaviour with the cache. If I run freevo cache, I get
a message that it is too old, and it's completely recreated again. I can see
it under FREEVO_CACHE_DIR/vfs/...
But if I run it again, it still says that it is too old and, again, rebuilds
it. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but if so, what could it be?

thanks

Re: [Freevo-users] Mplayer audio/video sync

2011-02-09 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I don't know what your problem is, but when you run mplayer from freeve, you
can see the actual command with
ps -ef | grep mplayer

other ways can work too. Then, you can compare how you and freevo run
mplayer and see what's different.

good luck

Hi.

It works! After another svn update (for the splashscreen bug) and removing
these files, videothumbs work again.

Still kaa & imlib2.

[Freevo-users] more about images

2010-11-09 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

Some time ago I started a thread about issues with seeing images. I've
increased the ram of my machine and I don't have crashes anymore. But it
still eats lots of memory. I can easily go to 80% of memo usage. It's a
pentium-iv, 3 GHz, about 800 Mb of ram (sharing some more memory for video).
Due to tv-out issues, I have no option but to use vesa right now. Ouch!
Well, what happens? If I watch images peacefully, everything is ok. Let's
say that I wait 2-3 second between images. I can't skip images very quickly,
but well, it works. What if I'm in a hurry? It behaves... weird. I can see
things from the upper bar, like the clock and disk usage, I can rotate the
images, but I can't go forward, backwards, change menu... It's as if freevo
think it is in an unknow state. Sometimes I manage to go back to the main
menu, but it's quite random. I think that changing or scanning images is a
heavy task, but I don't know why. So, when I press any key, I have to give
freevo some time to do whatever it's doing untill seeing the next image.
I've upgraded to svn, and it happens with quite big files (5-6 Mb or more),
but also with smaller files (1-2 Mb or so).
Anybody with the same?

thanks

What happens if you just put your karaoke.fxd in a music folder?
It works with playlists. Perhaps all fxd will work too.

Hi.

More info:

always crashed freevo, it all went well. But in another one, I get in

Never happened this to me before. I think this is the problem.
When I see images, freevo eats a lot of ram and swap. When it's over, it's
over. If I remove my tmpfs, and other things, freevo can survive. There is a
chance, at least. However, I think there's something wrong here. I don't
understand how it can be so consuming. And the problem must be with pygame,
according to:

Fatal Python error: (pygame parachute) Segmentation Fault (this I can see,
before I couldn't)
I'm using debian stable, with:

ii python2.5-minimal

More ram would help, sure, but I'm quite there must be some other solution.

Hi.

My logs are writing to /tmp, which is ramfs.

tmpfs 220M 124K 220M 1% /tmp

When it's full, freevo crashes, all right. But this usually doesn't happen.
Only when I set DEBUG=2 and have a lot of output.
Could it be that big images need a lot of memory to load, and there ir no
ram for /tmp? But then I'd have crashes watching movies, I think. Well, when
I have time, I'll try to write logs to another place.

Hi.

You don't say much about your problem. Looks like you are talking about
something in other thread.
Anyway, from what I understood about your problem, have you seen that you
can play video from different sources with different options? Maybe you can
put you audio options there, and pass no parameter with the usual audio
options.

[Freevo-users] size of images?

2010-07-25 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I'm using freevo-1.9.0 and I have a problem seeing photoes. I think it is
related to the size of the images.
I have folders with lots of files not very big, and I can see all of them.
No problem. But I have other folders with bigger files, and freevo crashes
when I try to see them. It doesn't happen always. I've tried putting a few
big files in a new folder, and sometimes I can see the images. Some of them,
even around 7 MB. But, usually, with files bigger than 2 MB I have problems.
I'd post some log, but there is no error in the logs. It just crashes.
I know that freevo uses pygame to display the images, but I don't know if it
uses some external program to actually show the image. In this case, I could
try one on one. BTW, all files are jpg. Anybody has had the same problem?

thanks

Hi.

The translation in the other post is more or less all the new info available.
I can't translate all the web ;) but as you seem to already know the project,
you'd better ask questions and I'll try to answer.
Basically, right now they say that ver 2.1 is about to be released soon with
the features you already saw, but there is very little more to say.

I've tried setting this vdev like you, and it still doesn't work.
Perhaps I'll have to try other choices.

Hi.

You must just install libdvdcss and compile mplayer with it. At least,
it works with all the dvd I've tried so far. Perhaps yours has another
kind of protection. In this case, I don't know.

[Freevo-users] mplayer doesn't like dvb

2009-02-15 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I'm trying to use mplayer to see tv (dvb-t). I have a nova-t 500
working and now I'm trying to configure freevo 1.8.3 to use it. I have
this in my local_conf.py:

VIDEO_GROUPS = [
#VideoGroup[0]
VideoGroup(
vdev='/dev/dvb/adaptor0', #For the benefit of lockfiles
adev=None,
input_type='dvb',
input_num=1,
desc='DVB Nova 0',
group_type='dvb',
record_group=1),
#VideoGroup[1]
VideoGroup(
vdev='/dev/dvb/adaptor1', #For the benefit of lockfiles
adev=None,
input_type='dvb',
input_num=2,
desc='DVB Nova 1',
group_type='dvb',
record_group=None)
]

I don't know python, but I've checked to tv_mplayer.py file, and it
seems that "input_type" is what freevo uses to see which parameters
pass to mplayer. Is that right? In this case, what's wrong? In the
logs I see that mplayer tries to play tv using /dev/video, like used
to do with my old bt8x8 analog card, which doesn't exist anymore. What
can be happening?
And, btw, a better suggestion for another player would be appr. In the
documentation it suggestes vlc, because it offers time-shifting, but
there is no such plugin.

Thanks
Alberto

[Freevo-users] igp9100 and tv-out

2009-02-11 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I know this is an old subject for many people, but the question will be new ;)
I have an pundit-r barebone with an igp9100 video chipset. Some people may
know that tv-out is a bit, errr... bad. I have to use an old version of the
ati propietary drivers (fglrx). It doesn't support 3d but it has/had xv.
Well, for some mistake of mine, I dared to upgrade x.org and the driver
stopped working. I thought it would be ok, because the latest version of
fglrx (8.28.8) was supposed to work, and it's the one I'm actually running.
The problem is... xv has a bug with the size of the screen and doesn't work
well. I can get the previous version of flgrx, which is still on ati's web,
but I don't seem to be able to find a version of xorg that worked with that
version. BTW, I'm running debian etch, (xorg-7.1.0-19) and even if oldstable
is supposed to be available, I haven't been able to make the older driver run
again.
Is anybody in the same situation as me? Would anybody have the packages I
need, or at least tell which version is working? Right now, I have to use x11
to see movies, which is a bit annoying, or completely useless for some
videos.

Thanks a lot
Alberto

PS: BTW, the free ati driver is really close to make this work! If you can, go
to freedesktop.org and take a look.

Hi.

I just wanted to say here that I already got my card working.
There was an old rule that seemed to match the dvb card, although it's the
first one I've ever had, so it took my a long time to find it.
Well, I tried kaffeine and it quickly showed me all the channels, and so on.
Now the weird thing is that freevo still tries to play tv with my old bt8x8
card that isn't installed anymore. But well, I don't care that much. I've
read that for timeshifting dvb or vdr are better than mplayer, so I'd dump
mplayer for tv even if I could make it work. I'll try when I have some time
after my exams.

Thanks a lot everybody for your help.

Re: [Freevo-users] freevo, fvtwm and NoTitle

2009-02-05 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I'm sorry, but I still don't see the need for another window manager.
You can pass parameters to mplayer to run in fullscreen mode (-fs) and
you can also give it the size of the screen, if needed. It's not
related to using xv, x11, sdl, or whatever, AFAIK. Try 'zoom' too.

Right now I can't give you my exact configuration, but I can do it
when I get home if you need it.

Hi.

Why do you need a window manager at all? I feel that you want to have
only freevo running. In this case, you can run freevo with "-fs", that
is, as window manager. You won't have windows with titles, borders,
etc.

Hi.

These are the rules I had. I tried also the rules recommended in the kernel
source, and it's the same. For some reason, I guess there is no match between
the rules and what my kernel finds, and I only have standar device names.

I'll have to work this out a little better.

Hola, Eduardo.

The funny thing is... I already tried kaffeine, but it said I had no dvb
device ;)
Well, my devices are /dev/dvb* and it seems that the standards
are /dev/dvb/device*/* or something like that. So first I'm trying to write a
proper rule for udev.

Great. I've downloaded the driver and compiled it. Now I have several
/dev/dvb* and it seems that both receivers are found.
But I still haven't been able to see anything. It's not that easy,
I've seen that I must find a file with the channels of my area (I have
it, btw it's Collserola in Spain, just in case somebody is there...
hola?). But I'm still fighting with mplayer, the syntaxis, the name of
the devices... When I find it out, surely will be all straight, but
until then, it's annoying.

I know. I read about the strange cards in some cards in UK. Luckily,
I'm in Spain so I was supposed to be free of this. But thanks for the
tip.

[Freevo-users] nova t-500

2009-02-02 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I've got a dvb-t card, a hauppauge nova-t 500, which is the one with
two tuners and no hardware encoder/decoder.
Well, I've read that it needs some work to make it work, but I still
haven't managed. So here's what I've done. BTW, this is a debian
stable box.

I have these firmwares:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9180 2005-05-01 23:26 dvb-dibusb-5.0.0.11.fw

and I've put them in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware and in /lib/firmware.
If the right place is another one, I don't know.
I also have these modules:

tinglao:~# lsmod (snipped)

The card is pci, but I've read somewhere that it uses some kind of
pci-usb connection.
And dmesg only shows this:

saa7146: register extension 'budget_ci dvb'.
Linux video capture interface: v2.00

I've added this rule for udev:
KERNEL="dvb*", PROGRAM="/etc/udev/scripts/dvb.sh %k", NAME="%c"

And the script is:
#!/bin/sh
/bin/echo $1 | /bin/sed -e 's,dvb\([0-9]\)\.\([^0-9]*\)\([0-9]\),dvb/adapter\1/\
2\3,'

This was from the kerne's documentation.

And that's all. The only thing I haven't done is installing hotplug.
but in debian, udev+hal+usbmount and hotplug conflict, so unless I
know it will work, I won't change.
Well, many people here have this working. So what am I missing?

Thanks

Hi.

I've noticed that this happens when my freevo box has no connection to
internet. I have a proxy/firewall box, and I connect it to the freevo
box through wi-fi. It seems that when the link is down, freevo isn't
responsive. I usually can't check this, because I have no keyboard in
that box and I connect... you see. But yesterday, with the firewall
machine off, freevo was slow again. So I tried, and turned on the
firewall box. When it was up, voilà, freevo worked as usual.
Could you check what I am saying? And, more important, could you fix it? ;)

[Freevo-users] freevo not responsive

2008-12-09 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I have freevo1.8.3 running, and I've noticed that sometimes it's extremely
unresponsive. I mean that I may press keys in the remote control or in a
gamepad, and it takes a lot of time to "do something". Looking at the logs, I
think that the event is delayed for some reason. But if I do cat /dev/xxx (js
or lirc) I see my action at the right time. But it doesn't happen always.
When it happens, no matter if I restart freevo or reboot the whole machine,
it still happens. But when it works, it works perfect. It hadn't happened
with any previous version that I've tried, but I'm using the same config as
always.

Any help?
Thanks

Hi.

What do you use to see the movie? Mplayer or xine? Is it a dvd or a file? Do
you use alsa or oss? You should give some more info. Meanwhile, you can see
in the logs how the movie is played. You will find it in /home/freevo/log,
or /var/log/freevo/ or something like that. First see the main-*.log file and
if needed, the logs of mplayer or xine. Run the same commands that freevo
runs and try to see what's happening.

Hi.

It's not one feed or two what doesn't work, it's the server. I've added the
urls in the examples, and nothing. I've also tried:
url,6
url;6

and it's the same. It used to be ',' but now I see ';' in the examples.
Should I be seeing the server work in the logs? I can't see anything.

[Freevo-users] from 1.6.3 to 1.8.2

2008-10-16 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I have dedicated freevo box. Because I use it everyday, I was reluctant to
upgrade but I eventually tried it. That's why the big jump from 1.8.2. Most
things work, more or less, but these don't:

- Shutdown does't work. Freevo stops but the machine isn't halted. freevo told
me to change the config and now I have:

SYS_SHUTDOWN_CONFIRM   = 1
HUTDOWN_SYS_ENABLE = 1
SYS_SHUTDOWN_CMD = "sudo shutdown -h now"

Of course, the freevo user can do "sudo shutdown -h now"

- How should Spanish (or non-English) people define locales? This is an old
problem with utf-8. Right now, I have LC_ALL=es_ES.UTF-8, but I had tried
with [EMAIL PROTECTED] And in local_conf.py, no LOCALE defined, or with
"iso-8859".
Well, if I use non-English texts in my config or in fxd files, freevo
crashes, with that famous error about utf-8 can't decode xx byte. But the
translated strings have non-English characters! (á, é, í, ó, ú, ñ) What
should I do?

- Last, I noticed a strange thing. Some graphics aren't properly rendered. The
big Freevo logo, during the boot, is a good example. Some white parts are
like... lines. I can't explain it well, but if somebody has had this problem,
he'll understand me. I took one of these images, I opened and saved with
gimp, and now it renders well. Maybe something with transparent parts?

And for now, that's all. I can start different threads if needed.

Thanks

This kind of this things are good to know. Because things work, more or less,

Interesting.
Could you add vesa to your tests? It only uses cpu power, so if you get your
50% with vesa, it could mean that freevo uses it as a fallback method for
some reason. Another thing you could try is to upgrade to the lastest freevo.
I don't know if something regarding this has changed, but...
Anyway, it looks like a serious bug. Consider reporting it when you have a
clear idea of what's going on.

Alberto

PS: Do you have any mplayer default options?

Hi.

This is quite an old thread, I know. But a similar question has arised, and
I'm interesting. Did you find any solution for this? In the new thread, the
problem seems to be using freevo -fs. xv doesn't work in that case, but
mplayer is run with multiple vx options, so you think that you are running
the same command inside and outside freevo, but it isn't true. How do you
start freevo?

Hi.

In this case, with just two more tries you can know whether you are actually
using sdl or x11. With that cpu usage, I think that I bet for x11. Could you
run freevo inside of twm and see what happens? (with and without xv, sdl,
x11)

Hi.

I remember similar threads in the list some months ago, but I don't remember
if there were any solutions/conclussion.
Just a question: when you say 50% cpu used, is it only for the mplayer
process, or overall? If you use the same mplayer command, the result should
be the same (I know it isn't). Could you change your freevo config, so that
you have only -vo xv?

I'm using python-2.5 and mplayer-svn. But this doesn't produce any

play music.

Hi.

I don't know how VLC works, but if mplayer works (something like mplayer
udp://... could be enough) you can use fdx files for this. There are some
examples in the wiki.

Hi.

Copy&paste your configuration of the sound, specially AUDIO_PLAYER and
AUDIO_DEVICE.
You should also check the logs. Typically, /tmp/freevo/mplayer-xxx or similar
and see how is mplayer called. You'll see the exact instruction, how freevo
calls mplayer.
BTW, you are using mplayer, right?

Hi.

Are you using arts in kde? If the answer is yes, disable it or make sure it
uses alsa.
Modern alsa can do dmix out of the box. That means that you can share the
sound card between applications. It doesn't block the card, as it happened
time ago.

Hi.

It's very hard for me to believe that azureus+mplayer works well, but
freevo+mplayer doesn't. Perhaps there is some problem about how freevo calls
mplayer. Could you post the full command used by freevo when you run the
videos? You can see it in the logs. And also, the command you use to run
mplayer from the command line.

Hi.

Perhaps, rather than optimizing freevo, you could optimize all your system.
What distro are you using? How do you compile mplayer? What other things are
running in the same box? This is important information that you didn't give.

Hi.

I'm not running out of space. But I think that freevo doesn't like my /tmp.
At first, I noticed that it couldn't use /tmp for logs. It crashed.Until I

[Freevo-users] mame cache in freevo 1.8.1

2008-06-09 Thread alberto hernando
Hi.

I'm trying to setup freevo-1.8.1.
One of the problems I've found is with the mame cache. I get a file
romlist-1001.pickled in my cache of 794 kb. It is incomplete, because I see
in the logs that it first scans the directory and then tries to generate the
cache, ending like this:

 rom.list

I get a txt file of about 25 Mb. I remember having had problems with this in
the past. At least, I think that if I can generate the binary pickled file,
freevo won't try to do the cache, so it will work. But how?

Thanks

[Freevo-users] problem with fxd file

Hi.

I've just discovered that I can have special configurations for certain
files using fxd files. I'm trying to use it to create menus for my dual

a number. The same goes for subtitle. Here's a example of an ogm file

  bruja_blair.ogm

What do you think? Should it work? Well, it nearly does, but... no. Looking
at /tmp/freevo/main.log, what I see is that if I choose the first variant,
mplayer runs with those options. If I choose the second variant, mplayer
runs with the first _and_ the second options, in this order. If I choose the
third variant, can you guess? First+second+third options. Obviously, this
isn't good, but I've copied this from the wiki, so it looks ok to me. Can
you help me?

thanks

Ahhh... This was the detail that I didn't know. Now it is pretty clear that
while the transport doesn't change, the content can change a lot without
having to change the standard. About needing more bandwidth, perhaps it is
possible to split a HD channel in two or more streams. The important thing is
that the answer to my question it is possible.

[Freevo-users] dvb question

2008-02-01 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I have a dvb related question. Not directly related to freevo, but, depending
on the answer, it might be in the future. I'm doing this question here
because some people might now and, who knows, depending on the country it
might be important.

My question is about dvb-t, the standard behind digital terrestril tv, the new
tv in Europe. In every analog channel, there is a stream containing up to 4
digital channels (that is, audio+video, what you see), and perhaps some data
or some more audio channels. It is an mpeg2 strean, and the cards used in
computers can tune a channel, extract the stream and decode it. So, the
question:

What if the stream isn't in mpeg2 but in mpeg4 (for example)? I think that, at
least in Spain, some tests have been done to increase quality with the same
bitrate. What I want to know is if the same cards will work in this case.
Will they still capture the stream and let the cpu (mplayer rocks) decode it?
Or the signal will just be ignored? The modulation won't change, so the card
should see the signal and, at least, the receiver should see the bitstream,
but if someone knows for sure, I'd like to know. It would be great to know
that even if dvb-t changes this, we won't need a new receiver.

Ahh!!! I always thought that pvr-500 was for dvb-t. In this case, perhaps
wintv nova t-500 (also from Hauppauge) is really the same family of cards for
dvb-t? I have to check it. I've seen the card in my usual stores, but I don't

far? I like pvr-500 (is it the same that wintv nova t500?) because it has 2
receivers, which could be nice in. But I've seen that hauppauge has some
newer hardware, and I don't know whether some people knows it, or is well
supported.

My second question is about DAB: does freevo support it? Is there any way to
use it, with fxd files or something like that? If it is possible, is there
any card that provides dvb-t and dab? Maybe I'm asking for too much, so what
about an usb dab receiver? My box has only 2 pci slots. I need one for tv,
and the other one is busy with wifi, so until I can use the ethernet
connection, I have no more free space.

Hi.

First of all, you don't need a tv guide to watch tv. I mean, you can have
"channel has no data" and still watch tv. You just won't be able to know
what you are going to see... Then, about the black screen: if you had a
serious problem, probably after pressing enter freevo would go back to...
freevo. So if you watch a black screen, it means that mplayer is doing
something, but not what you want. So go to the logs (search under
/tmp/freevo) and try to find the command that is running mplayer. Perhaps
you will see that it's missing the driver, or the channel is wrong or
something. You can also try that command in a console and see what happens.
When you you what's wrong, you'll need to find in local_conf.py where your
configuration is wrong too.

[Freevo-users] ogm video and multiple audio tracks

2007-09-23 Thread alberto hernando
Hi.

I'm trying to play some ogm videos with multiple audio tracks and I've
noticed that freevo doesn't handle them right. Mplayer uses -aid to select
the audio track, and according to the man pages, thet are 1, 2, 3, etc. But
actually, my tracks are 0, 1, 2... I've checked this with a dvd ripped with
dvd::rip and another one, ripped with another tool, and the result is the
same. The mistake seems to be in the documentation, but I find it hard to
believe that nobody has noticed before. So perhaps my build of mplayer is
wrong? I hope somebody can check this. Ah, and avi files work fine.

Thanks

Hi.

Of course. I said "two" channels, but actually I meant "more than one". If the
software can handle all channels, and why not, you could record all of them.
If your cpu and harddisk are powerful enough... that's another matter. I
don't have numbers, but I think that just dumping the stream to hd shouldn't
be a too heavy task. After that, you probably would like to reencode to save
some storage space.

Hi.

I don't mind answering to you, but you could also ask the same in the list. So
I'm cc'ing there.

Your question: what about streams? In analog tv, every channel comes in a
frequency (so to speak) and each frequency only carries a channel. So when
you want to see a channel, your card tells the tuner to receive that
frequency, and then the data can be received and so on. In digital tv, this
is a bit different. In digital technology, as you surely know, all data is
converted into binay symbols (1/0). So every tv channel (with audio, video,
subtitles, etc) in converted into 1 and 0. The good point is that you take
several tv channels and put all their 1 and 0 together. You are multiplexing
them. Then, you call all this an stream. You air the stream with a frequency,
so this frequency carries more than one channel. In dvb-t it's four channels,
and in dvb-s it might be 8, but I'm not sure. It doesn't matter either. So
what's the point? If you have two cards (or a card with two tuners) you can
see/record two channels at once. That's obvious. But if you have only one,
and you are lucky enough to want to see/record two channels from the same
stream, then only one card is needed. Of course, you need the software to
handle this, but as I said, I think freevo 2 will have this feature. So, how
can you know? You should check if your provider gives you this info. For
example, using an example from Spain, I know how dvb-t is working, so I know
that I could see "tve1" while recording "la 2" with only one card, but I
couldn't see "la sexta 1" while recording "la sexta 2". You need info for
this. I don't know if epg (electronic program guide) has this info.

I hope that my explanation is clear enough.

Hi.

Some cards have two receivers/tuners. It's just like having two cards. Also,
each digital stream have more than one channel. So it's possible to record
two channels if they are in the same stream (with one receiver, of course).
If I'm not wrong, this feature will be in freevo 2.

Hi.

I've managed to make it work. Actually, it was a silly problem. The folder has
to be VIDEO_TS. But in some cases, I had video_ts. Only this. Now it works.
The copied dvd to the hard disk behaves like the real one.

Now, to make the copy. It's true that just mounting the dvd and trying to copy
it doesn't work. It gives i/o error. So I tried k3b 1.0.3 to rip it. Then I
realized that I needed libdvdcss. After a quick recompile, k3b suggested me
to use videodvd:/ in konqueror. There, without mountig the dvd, I could copy
the files (and in capital letters). I did the same with other dvds, but
mounting them, and I could copy them, but not in capital letters. So the copy
was fine, but the playback wasn't. So konqueror (and konsole, etc) can handle
these file if they have been decrypted. To do so, the trick is trying to copy
them with k3b so it will get the css keys. If not, playing them with mplayer
works too. After you have the keys, it's a lot easier to do anything. Maybe
there are newer dvds where I can't do this, When I find one, I'll try
dvdbackup.

[Freevo-users] playing dvd

2007-09-03 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I have a question about how freevo manages dvd's. If I use a real dvd, no
problem, freevo plays it (rather, xine plays it). But now I'm trying to copy
dvd's to the hard-disc. In some cases, freevo knows that a folder has another
video_ts folder, and shows it as dvd, like a real disc. But in other cases,
this doesn't happen, and I just see video_ts.vob, etc. So, what's happening
here? The same dvd is played from the disk but not from the hard disk. Does
it has something to do with crypted dvds? At first, I couldn't copy them, but
after having mplayer play it, I can make the copy. So I really don't know
what's going on.

Thanks

Hi.

I've found what happened... more or less.

First, the freevo user has full access to /tmp, but /tmp/roms simply never
exists. And /tmp is never full either.
Second, I don't start mame with /usr/bin/xmame.x11 or similar. I have my own
script to call it, located in /home/freevo/bin/mame. Inside I call xmame.x11,
of course, but I do it like this so that I can add more options, and other
things I need to do before and after playing a game. It's the same that I
have in freevo-1.6.2 with no problem.
What happens then? As I said, I have two freevo in the same box. At first, I
was sharing the cache. But everytime I boot one after the other, the cache
was recreated. I guess the system must be different. So I decided to use
different cache directories. And then mame started crashing. The first time
mame is run, it creates a cache, not of the roms you have, but the ones it
can use. Under freevo-1.6.2 and the script, there is no problem, the cache
can be built. But under 1.7.3, it crashes. If I use the same cache directory
for both freevos, no problem, the mame cache from 1.6.2 works for 1.7.2 and
mame runs. So 1.7.2 can run mame with my script, but can't build the cache. I
thing it has do with something about that freevo can't find the config files
of my script (there aren't!) and that's why it crashes.
If you thing this is a serious bug, I can reproduce it whenever I want and I
can give you more info, if you need it.

2007-08-16 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

A few monts ago, I started a discussion here about my moving to lfs from
debian for my box running freevo. It took me some time, but I've done less
work than I wanted.

What works:
- It boots :) Using LFS-6.2, I got my system booting with little problems. I
then compiled x.org-7.2 according to blfs-dev, and the added a silly
bootscript with "su - freevouser startx". In $HOME/.xinit, that user has
freevo -fs and a few other things. Quite simple and noticeable faster than
the debian boot.

- Using python 2.5 and customized cflags gave no problem.

- Copying the local.conf from debian (freevo 1.6.2 there) was nearly enough to
have the new freevo 1.7.2 (1.7.3 now) running. I just needed a few changes,
due to the different versions of freevo.

- I can see tv and movies, listen to music and play mame and openmsx games.
CD/DVD loading, tv guide, imdb and other small things work as expected.

What doesn't work:
- LIRC. I compiled lircd and pylirc. When I start lircd
(lircd --driver=pinsys --device=/dev/ttyS0) like in debian, udev created the
devices, but it still doesn't work. irw doesn't show anything. In the past, I
had it working easily in an old lfs system.

- Joystick support. This isn't related to freevo either. I have two cheap
gamepads that work well in the debian partition. Udev recognizes them and
create the devices too. They work but not as expected. I mean, it's like
pressing the wrong buttons. Sorry, I can explain it better. But I don't know
of any diagnosis tool for this, like we have irw for lirc.

- Alsamixer. I asked about this some time ago, but I can't still make it work.
It must be pretty simple (alsa works) but I haven't managed yet.

- HAL automounting of usb mass-storage. I expected it to work out of the box,
but...

Things that I still have to try:

- A proper tv-out. I have a tv and a crt monitor attached right now. With the
same xorg.conf file, in debian tv-out and in lfs, the crt is working. Well,
not exactly the same: debian uses ati propietary drivers and lfs, plain ati
from xorg. This will be tough.

- Recordserver/rssserver/encodingserver: I still don't know how they work, I
won't mind until I have a proper lirc+joystick+tvout.

This is my experience. I know that most of these things should be asked better
in the blfs-support list, but as this concerns a lot to freevo and surely
there are people here interested, I hope that it doesn't matter.

Thanks for your help

Very good. I installed twistedweb 2.4.0 and the servers are running. I didn't

No. I want to remove the extra tv icon and I thought that perhaps I could
remove something from freevo_config.py. But it doesn't look possible.

Another thing that I'd like to use is alsamixer. The plugin is in the
freevo/plugins directory, pyalsaaudio is installed and I have

plugin.remove('mixer')
plugin.activate('alsamixer')

in my local_conf.py. But I get this:

with no result. Is this plugin working well? In the notes, the author doesn't
make it clear.

[Freevo-users] updating to 1.7.2

2007-07-09 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

After some time using freevo-1.6.2, I'm trying to upgrade to 1.7.2. I'm doing
it in a new partition with LFS, so I'm installing everything from source. I'm
using my old local_conf.py as a base, so I have already more or less what I
want, but I have some problems:
- I can't use the cd, i always have "no action defined". No more messages in
the logs.
- recordserver, webserver and encodingserver don't exist, but rssserver does.
During the building I didn't see any error. I'm using python-2.5. Is this ok?
- I have 2 tv in my idlebar. This also happens in freevo-1.6.2. If I disable
tv.plugin, one of them dissapears, but I don't know where the other comes
from.

Probably I'll find more issues, but right now these are the biggest ones. If
the upcoming 1.7.3 will fix my building problems, then I can wait.

Hi.

Top posting is also bad according to nettiquete. It's like reading the answer

it about.

This is not about recording. You really can't watch any tv channel when the

You don't need it. Actually, I use kdm to boot freevo (as a window manager).
Yes, quite strange, but that was the first way that I managed to make it
work. And then, the KISS principle...

In my new attempt, I'll try to make things simpler, so I was wondering: do I
need X at all? Can I run everything in framebuffer? I think I should, as
that's how geexbox works, right? So mplayer/xine will work, but... what about
mame/fmsx/others? Will they work? Remember my video hardware is a radeon
9100igp, and there's no way to have 3d+tvout. So, if I want to run freevo in
framebuffer, what do I need?

Yes, I was already thinking that starting X, freevo et al. as soon as possible

Yes, I needed those drivers to get tv-out with Xv. That's why the only

When I have all working, I'll come back and explain how it went.

[Freevo-users] recording an X session

2007-03-25 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

Recently, I've seen somewhere a software to record an X session. I know about
xvidcap, but it eats a lot of cpu. The software I saw used some layer of the
X protocol, and it sounded to be quite good. I thought that I had seen it
here, but I can't find it. But I've seen the video of freevo2, and I was
wondering how it was made. Perhaps using the program I'm talking about? If
not, how?

Thanks

[Freevo-users] freevo & LFS

2007-03-25 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I have freevo 1.6.3 running in a debian box. I'm quite happy with it, but I'm
also a LFS user, so I want to switch to LFS to run freevo. Why? Well, LFS is
less bloated and my feeling is that it runs faster. LFS users understand
me...
The point is that I have a spare partition in my freevo box and during the
easter holidays I plan to build LFS to run freevo there. I know that there
are some more LFS users here, so I wanted to ask if they have any useful tips
for this. For example, any change in the bootscripts to get a faster boot, or
anything else.
The box is a pundit-r barebone, with an igp9100 ati graphic chipset, HT
pentium-iv. With debian, I'm using the ati drivers to get tv-out. I hope I
can still use them. If not, perhaps I'll have to use vesa...

Well, that's all. As I said: any hint?

Hi.

I had this problem some time ago. My screen went black. I could recover the
image with a command, but I couldn't disable dpms. My final solution: put
your command in cron and run it every 5 minutes (or whatever you need). You
can call my solution stupid, but it works.

Hi.

I don't know this format. Is it just a .mpeg/.mpg file? Anyway, first thing to
try is see if mplayer or xine can play it. Perhaps you just need to recompile
mplayer with more codecs. If mplayer can play it, see in the logs what freevo
is trying to do and any error message. I'm assuming you can see these files
in freevo. If you can't, you need to add the extensions in the config file.
If this is too complicated, try and ask here again explaining every step.

Hi.

I think that this kind of threads will arise again and again. So, for now, I
have only a question: is it possible to use the pvr for tv-out _and_ your
other graphic card for 3d, for example? In case, what I mean is: I have a
pundit-r with a 9100igp chipset. I have tv-out with the ati drivers but no
3d, and I could have 3d with open drivers, but no tv-out (perhaps in the
future...). So, could I use the like the only card, thus having 3d, and
drive/pipe/whatever the output through the pvr?
And for the people who has a pvr-500 and or a pvr-350: does 500 have tv-out?

Thanks

Hi.

Am I understanding right? Do you mean that you need to connect speakers to the
PVR to listen to tv? In the near future, I'm considering buying a PVR-500
(dual tuner and all...). I of course thought that the sound, like the video,
was captured from the digital stream and was like any other sound in the box,
it can be mixed, recorded, muted, etc... Am I wrong? Can somebody explain me?

Hi.

A bit too late. I simply deleted $CACHE/vfs and went through my folders again,
rebuilding the cache. It works very well now. Ah, I had some mp3 that weren't
properly shown, for the name/tag bug in 1.6.1. With the new cache, this is

[Freevo-users] cache behaviour

2006-12-22 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

After some problems with 1.6.1, I decided to give 1.6.2 a try. Everything
seems to work well, but a I have a question.
In 1.5.4 everytime I entered a new folder, I saw the "Scanning folder" message
(more or less, I see it in Spanish). And if the folder never changed, I never
see that message again. I had "freevo cache" run everytime before running
"freevo". But now, everytime I reboot freevo, I see this message for all the
folders. Thumbnails are created only once, but folders are always scanned. So
I removed "freevo cache" and it seems to work like before. The question is if
the cache behaviour has changed, and what's the proper configuration for
this.

Thanks

[Freevo-users] 15.4->1.6.1:some problems

2006-12-17 Thread Alberto Hernando
Hi.

I'm tryin to upgrade my freevo-1.5.4 box to 1.6.1, and I've run into some
problems:
- I can't build mmpython-0.4.10. I can't post here any logs, because I've lost
the net connection to the box, but I get a gcc error. It's using debian
sarge. So I'm using the old mmpython-0.4.8 (9?). Freevo-1.6.1 builds but it
gives me problems with the cache. Ah, and I could build mmpython-0.4.10 with
no problem in another lfs partition where I do some tests.
- In the changelog, I read that it includes a rss server. I had it in 1.5.4 as
a plugin, so it seems that it's already included in the main package. But
I've seen no reference to it in the local_conf.py example file. How must I
use it?
- The encode server can't be started anymore as before. Does it work out of
the box now? I haven't really tested this yet.
- I have now 2 tv icons in the idlebar. Perhaps this is because I have a tv
card and a webcam. Multi-tuner support? But when I have tv record, both of
them say they are recording.

For now, that's all. I'll work a bit more on it and try to tune it as before.

Thanks
