Re: [Freevo-users] vlc and remote control
Jonathan Isom jei...@gmail.com writes: 2009/7/10 Bernard Mentink bment...@gmail.com: snip Hi I have attached an attempt at using vlc's python bindings. The main problem is that the bindings are only in the repo. They aren't distributed in the release. Also some files (applies to the others interfaces as well) don't seek. (mpeg-ts for instance) Also I had naming problems( the python binding was named vlc,as was plugins in freevo) so it wouldn't load load the binding without removing vlc.py plugin from the video player. I would suggest rc, though the mediacontrolapi is a better approach long term. Documented here: http://wiki.videolan.org/MediaControlAPI Repository here: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/browser/bindings/python Later Jonathan I made a fairly simple attempt at getting the remote to work with vlc using a unix socket. I got some of the simple commands working but I didn't have time to make it into a proper patch. If you want to look at a simple way of doing it I think the --rc-unix parameter is a good option. Then you can send simple commands like play pause and others using that socket. I will try over the weekend to see if I can find some of the code I made back then. /Mark -- Enter the BlackBerry Developer Challenge This is your chance to win up to $100,000 in prizes! [Freevo-users] Freevo on Hauppauge Media MVP
Has anyone thought of supporting the MVP with freevo? I'm not sure exactly what it would entail as its a fairly limited little box. It is based on a PPC with hardware mpeg1/2 chip that reads streams from the network. I was just curious if it was possible as I was using freevo with a dxr3 and from what I understand freevo transcoded everything for the dxr3 (which I guess means mpeg streams - including the menus). If that is the case it wouldn't be a hugh step to stream that stream over the network to the MVP. What I know about the MVP: Apart from the PPC, hardware mpeg1/2 chip. It is running linux, it has a bit of firmware that enables it to search for the MVP on the network (At this point it appears to be searching for an TFTP server, which then uploads the rest of the OS (a file called dongle.bin (screaming out for someone to hack it)) which then loads menus from the MVP server (these are just html - but I think they are sent using some sort of VNC like process (as you can view the menu on the PC). As for the remote return commands, I don't know much about that. There is a project (www.gbpvr.com ) that has implemented this, but its media support for the MVP is limited. The original MVP software from Hauppauge leaves a lot to be desired even with the beta software that adds wma/wmv and divx support. The transcoding is inefficient as when I try to play a divx movie thru the MVP from my dual 1G PIII it says it isn't fast enough... with freevo playing divx thru the dxr3 (transcoding to mpeg?) on a dual celeron 400MHz it could just about cope. The cost of the MVP is low with many vendors carrying it @ GBP £50 and its small (smaller than a video cassette) and its quiet (no noise at all). And to top it all off the video output is great, as good as the dxr3 on TV. Anyway - what do people think? They're not in local stores here yet but I could order one online within Canada for $133. I'm not sure exactly what it would entail as its a fairly limited little box. It is based on a PPC with hardware mpeg1/2 chip that reads streams from the network. At first thought it would involve network booting or embedded kernel, mount everything using NFS, SDL support for Freevo menus, a video output driver for mplayer or xine, or just DirectFB support. Most of that work is probably already done by another project. I know people already running VDR on the MVP. I assume you mean booting the MVP with a new OS via the dongle.bin file? Would that really be necessary? I was just looking at the re-skin-ability of the MVP and while it would be easy to create a skin for the MVP that looks like (the default) freevo skin, the remote codes are still an issue - I have found out a little more about this and it just appears to be server side calls... will try to find out some more useful info on this... I was just curious if it was possible as I was using freevo with a dxr3 and from what I understand freevo transcoded everything for the dxr3 (which I guess means mpeg streams - including the menus). If that is the case it wouldn't be a hugh step to stream that stream over the network to the MVP. I would say this is definately doable. Thats good news, any more info I find - i'll pass on. The cost of the MVP is low with many vendors carrying it @ GBP £50 and its small (smaller than a video cassette) and its quiet (no noise at all). And to top it all off the video output is great, as good as the dxr3 on TV. Yes, the price is right and this is the kind of frontend people need on their televisions. I have a vision of cat5 going to every TV and NOT coax. Impliment access and parental controls on the backend, etc, etc... The price is so right! I have cat 5 in every room in my house (usually near a TV) and have just bought two MVPs but the hauppague interface sucks... the gbpvr interface is nicer but lacks the feature I would like. Freevo and the MVP would be the 'killer app'. What I would like to see is the MVP playing ripped DVDs and even movies straight off the DVD. A Basic web browser might be nice too - sometimes I just don't wanna go to the PC to find something out quickly... Back to Mozilla and some sort of on screen keyboard... maybe a project for the future... Anyhow, I certainly want to pick up one of those and will be willing to put some work into getting Freevo running on it. I am happy to help anyway I can - I'm not a great programmer, more a systems integrator - but I have worked with many different STBs (Set top boxes) before. In windows there are widescreen modes on the NVidia cards, using one of these in conjunction with TV out and a widescreen TV should correct your aspect ratio (doesn't look too good on a monitor but if you are running it dedicated#. Re: [Freevo-users] dxr3 and libSDL
That was a handy explanation, I have various companys internal dev guides but nothing I can freely release so I wondered if the BBC would have anything like this publicly available... http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/branding/picturesize.shtml This has various guide pictures (which comes with the classic test card) for all prospective aspect ratios. I have both native overscan and no overscan tv output cards (dxr3 and old nvidia/ati) and 4:3 and 16:9 tvs. There seems to be some confusion as to the resolutions used by the tv. This is more or less a constant being either PAL or NTSC (forgetting the other variations PAL-i, secam etc) irrespective of what the PC is using 800x600, 640x480 it is all scaled to fit the TV standard being used. You can in theory display any resolution you want on a TV 1600x1200 for example, if you have the hardware to scale that far, the problem being the TV is incapable of showing that level of detail. Unless you are showing a low res picture at high res scaled down again for the TV. - Original Message - From: Barnowl [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, January 17, 2004 11:26 PM Subject: Re: [Freevo-users] dxr3 and libSDL Looks like I have a project to play with this weekend. So, you want to make the safe action area smaller - that is what Freevo's overscan settings do. overscan settings will not take negative numbers so those are useless (I want a -20 setting!) That is like saying you want Freevo to draw outside of the tv signal which doesn't make sense. Your dxr3 (or any tv output method / encoder / xserver / drivers) is responsible for actually overscanning the picture. Many xservers that support tv-out also have an overscan setting for this, the same is true for some framebuffer drivers, and some just overscan a certain amount automatically. So, if your tv-out is overscanning 30 pixels horizontally and in Freevo your OSD_OVERSCAN_X is only set to 20 then freevo will draw things outside of your visible tv border, outside of the safe action area. You would need at least a value of 30 (probably a bit more) for OSD_OVERSCAN_X to make it look right. Our overscan settings really determine what Freevo thinks is the safe action area. so yes it works, except that the freevo GUI is overscanning too far. It sounds like your dxr3 is overscanning too far and you need to tell Freevo just how much. Re: [Freevo-users] Re: overscan settings and dxr3
As far as TV based interfaces are concerned, you develop your interface to take account of overscan. I suspect freevo would need a skin that is designed with the tv safe area in mind. Don't know if the skin can determine the placement of the plugin items? Take any STB interface or tv advert with text/graphics and if they are designed with the TV in mind, then the functional/informational elements are well within the bounds of the TV safe area, with backgrounds etc running off screen. But it looks like I'll have to do that with the 350. Anyone got any advice to help me sort my dream setup? I dont have a PVR board, but I would think you could just put a splitter (either passive or an rf amplifier) in the cable rf lead. That way you could send one cable to the tv and one to freevo. Mark I think what Nick was wanting (and what I want to do with Freevo) is to have a radio-frequency output from Freevo that carries all the usual channels (from the aerial) plus a Freevo-playback-channel. In other words, how to you get Freevo to act like a VCR's RF-out socket? I know there may be some loss of picture quality in converting the MPEG back to RF rather than using plain composite video (or RGB, or S-video), but it would be more convenient when plumbing the Freevo into my house's existing co-ax wiring. I thought initially that the PVR 350 had an RF output, but the specs seem to say otherwise. Maybe it's possible to buy or make a separate gadget that adds a video signal back into an RF feed on a suitable channel. Re: [Freevo-users] Newbie, is Freevo what I need/want?
I'm using RH9 and its pretty easy to use, I suggest you install apt-get This along with up2date will allow you to quickly install any missing deps. Thats said, actually working out what deps you need and what they are actually called to apt-get them is a different story, only experience/time and a decent support group (like this one) will make that task easier. That and apt-get! The only problems I've run into in RH9/freevo are related to the Dxr3 HW Mpeg decoder (used for tv output), but it was well worth the effort as the video out quality is second to none. I never did manage to get 1.3.4 working properly with the dxr3.. so kinda waiting for 1.4 - I've kinda been put off using CVS as in the past using CVS has often caused more problems than its solved (for me at least - especially when compliing multiple dependencies - if one changes slightly in a way that the others are not expecting, you can forget it) - But don't let me put you off trying. Tip: if you use RH8/9 (IMHO RH8 sucked ass 7.3 was better 8 just looked nicer 9 has the best of both and more) make sure that when you use up2date that you get the source as well - this can help when you are trying to complie stuff with specific hw support (if you ever need to) - for example, I disabled src from day one to save disk space and got about 5 kernel upgrades via RHN and when I tried to complie kernel modules/drivers it wouldn't/couldn't without the current kernel src, and it was fun finding the right src package and installing it and following the kernel howto to set up the src tree to allow me to complie stuff against it. Anyhoo, the people on this list are very helpful, freevo is a great way to learn linux - I didn't consider myself a newbie, but I aint no linux guru either - I have learnt a lot from using freevo, and I personally think its a good place to start. I would've thought that if your linux box can see the net, then apt-get should too... If you can browse or if wget http://some.url.com/some/file/to/download.tar.gz works (obviously this isn't a real url :-) and can download a file then apt-get should be fine. The only problems I've run into in RH9/freevo are related to the Dxr3 HW Mpeg decoder (used for tv output), but it was well worth the effort as the video out quality is second to none. Not read about that yet, is it essential/optional/details somewhere??? The dxr3 is totally optional - I just happened to have one lying around and it seemed a waste of such a good card (creative stopped supporting it - the win2k beta drivers never worked for me) that I thought I would try and get it working with freevo. There are various options for using freevo, either on your monitor via X or framebuffer or via various video cards with TV out. I assume 1.3.4 the one to go with for the time being? Unless someone tells me otherwise... 1.3.4 is the current binary release. Although (and someone please correct me if the situation has changed) this states that there are no deps, it doesn't include mplayer (for playing avi's etc) so you will likey need to download this and compile it... As I said before feel free to try CVS, don't take my word for it! I might try it myself this weekend and so how it goes... Re: [Freevo-users] What hardware to buy?
I have an media box featuring a xp1800 (or 1900 I dont remember) which I have actually underclocked. I will not be doing any transcoding on this box. I use a Matrox Marvel G400 for tvout usinf DirectFB. My sound card is an RME DIGI 96/8 PAD. For IR I'm using an IRMAN. I have successfully used this box to play audio and video files. I have ripped audio but only outside of freevo as yet. I am not currently looking at video recording, but have ripped dvd s without transcoding (again outside of freevo) I have a file server for all media which uses NFS rather than SAAMBA. It contains an 1TB Raid5 array and uses a 1.3ghz celleron to provide software raid5. I wanted a lot of space as I'm looking for very high quality media. I will not be using lossy audio compression and at the moment am storing dvd as mpeg2 rather than Divx. This is a pretty long answer to your question, but the thing is everyone does it differently. It depends on your budget, aims and the comproises you are prepared to make. I strongly suggest you make your choices carefully. Think about noise, price, heat and long term goals. If you will have a file server I suggest you think about net booting. I think one of my best decisions was to make the media box diskless. [Freevo-users] Proposed patent changes?
Is this for real? I was aware of patents being granted for software, but this looks like open season on all but the largest companies with teams of patent lawers... they would have a field day enforcing their intelectual property. It would be near impossible for free development if as is mentioned on the new home page, patents are granted for the simplest of software processes. On the other hand, a pragmatic view would be that software development would stagnate for the next 25 or so years (can't remember the exact time a patent protects an idea), but after that its a free for all... not a nice prospect, having to put off all your projects till the stupid patents run out. However, I suspect that it will be difficult to gain patents on all but the newest processes (I use processes to refer to both software methods/algorithms and business processes) after all, you can only apply for a patent if the idea is not already in the public domain, thats not to say that many large companies have or are in the process or obtaining patents. Where can I find docs relating to compiling freevo from src? - Original Message - From: Adam Stephens [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, August 28, 2003 6:34 PM Subject: [Freevo-users] DXR3 can be successful Hi all, I am writing to tell you my experiences with the DXR3 and freevo. My first attempt at using this combination was successful on a Pentium-233. I was using Gentoo, but i had hand compiled a couple things including freevo. When I upgraded the box to an Athlon-700, I decided to start from scratch with Gentoo. I had discovered the gentoo freevo ebuild, and wanted to build off of that. Since most of the packages required are included with gentoo's packaging system, with mmpython and pylirc being included in the freevo ebuilds. All that was left to do was get libsdl compiled with dxr3 support. According to the Wiki, you need to use the cvs of libsdl. Sorry to say, but that is not true. I was able to use libsdl 1.2.5 and I am still using it successfully. In fact, when you use 1.2.5, you don't have any problems with the patch not working. Needless to say, I modified the libsdl ebuild in portage to add some dxr3 support. While dxr3 is not an official USE flag, this ebuild looks for it and will compile libsdl accordingly. I've been meaning to add the TTF patch as well, just haven't had the chance. What I'm getting at here, is installing freevo was easy. And most things just work. I was using 1.3.4 successfully for a while, but have recently upgraded to a later snapshot to get xine support working. Let me say with a snapshot and a xine-ui cvs build, I am able to use fbxine for dvds, and it works perfectly. If you really want dxr3 support, I suggest you really look into compiling many of the dependencies yourself. (freevo source, mplayer, libsdl) When it was all said and done, I never had to link libraries to the freevo directory, even when using the non-ebuild snapshot I have now. (BTW Dischi, I dont think the freevo-snapshot ebuild works anymore. :) Alas, everything works smoothly for me. Let me suggest you migrate away from an RPM-based system if this is a standalone machine, or if you have the ability. I have attached a my libsdl ebuild. I think I need to get away from it so I can reproduce the box for friends -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 27, 2003 5:41 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Freevo-users] DXR3 problem more Hi everybody! I've tried to get freevo working with my Hollywood+ card for several days now but I haven't succeeded so far. I learned from a posting that the binary releases do not support the dxr3 anymore. Neverthe- less I replaced the libSDL with the one supporting dxr3 hardware. As you can see below the 'osd.py' seems to make troubles. Although mplayer does play videos via the dxr3 card the freevo menu is always displayed on the monitor only. Is the error because of the rpm package? If yes, what's wrong with the compiling process? Apart from this problem there are some more which I want to list here: 1. playing audio cd's in freevo doesn't work, audio cd is not found (mplayer cdda://1 does play the first track with stuttering and xmms even flawlessly!) no problem with data cd's, those are mounted successfully 2. menu browsing with a remote control is a bit tricky because of high sensibility (if I press the 'down' button it often happens that it scrolls to fast, so another menu entry is selected - maybe due to caching?) 3. Does freevo support a local cddb/freedb database for lookup? BTW: I use Suse Linux 8.2, just in case something's works differently with that distro. Thanks for your help in advance! Re: [Freevo-users] RE: [Freevo-users][OT] radio frequency receivers
I've got an ATI remote wonder - this is a wireless remote (USB receiver). I'm still undecided on this as at present as the range is somewhat limited. When I tired it at work it had a useable range of about 10meters, but at home that range is seriously reduced to only 1 to 3 meters depending on the positioning of the receiver and orinentation of the xmitter. I found this was a problem with wireless alarm systems at home too - the specified range of 150meters was drastically reduced in my house to little more than 5 - 10 meters depending on the placement of xmitters/receivers. Tech support (for the alarm system) suggested high mineral/iron content in the brick work of the house or stray radio interference... could be the vast amount of cat5 and coax running throughout my house! I've also only used this thing on windows, but I found details of a linux implementation for this remote that seemed to use the X10 protocol - not sure exactly what it would entail to set this thing up under linux though... You can now get these in the uk via www.mini-itx.com (your one stop shop for all things mini-itx) (They also ship worldwide - there is another supplier in the uk (where I got mine) but I can't remember off hand the URL) As for x10/physical connection - have they not heard of opto isolation? What is this one-wire stuff? Got a link handy? Will google it later... sounds interesting... - Original Message - From: Roh . X10, um, what can i say, it opens up the old argument of using mains for data. as an experienced electronics engineer, i can say that personaly id never, ever use anything that modulates my mains supply (240v 10/15A max here, thats a potiential 2400/3600W load with a physical connection to my computer/sensitive electronics - no thanks!!), be it X10 or those crazy pest-repellant devices, or a number of other devices that do similar things. X10 is old now, it was old 5 years ago, although its popular still in homes, almost all of the big electronics firms have been developing newer/smarter/faster/safer methods for automation. and for the last 2 years or so it looks likes Dallas's 1-wire technology has come out in front, and has already been used in fridges and ovens etc, works on the JINI/TINI technology, and has a HUGE potiential. It's great, when the temperature in the room exceeds settings I have declared the celing fans there come on. I also have it based on time, and if the IR motion detectors have sensed that someone is in the room within the past hour (occupancy detector) yeh misterhouse can do some cool things. but it will still do all the same cool things, and more, once 1-Wire has more user-end programs, drivers, etc (there are a few atm, Dallas have a linux API available) and someone makes a 1-wire version of misterhouse (yeh i know a long way off). Dallas already have all-in-one chips that can switch/dim lights (bulb and fluro), measure temp/light levels, sense motion, general I/O and adc/dac's, they even have chips(microcontrollers) that run native java, provide web servers(tcp/ip) etc, some really cool stuff. most chips have on-board ram to store data instead or constant polling, they can count and store in ram and just collect data once an hour (data can contain data logs from every minute of that hour, which may be the 20 or so temp sensors on that branch on the 1-wire network that u want to log). as well as bluetooth/wifi interfaces, and things like the java-ring for authentication, the future is really crazy when u think what this 1-wire could do for home automation. doing such a thing is outside the scope of freevo... (it's like asking your VCR to take the trash out.) get misterhouse instead for home automation. yeh, we werent actually talking home automation with freevo to begin with, someone was curious about using a RF remote with freevo (lirc), i gave my two cents worth, a couple of others also did, and here we are talking about trashing the RF remote completely and using X10. ...although, down the road, there is nothing stopping freevo from having a front-end for home-automation - why not? i think it would be cool (after all u just control misterhouse via apache, why not freevo?) regards, rohbags. Sucess! I managed to get the dxr3 working in slow degrees last night... I didn't expect it to play properly as its an mpeg not an mv stream) Tried a few more files, got more or less the same results (Still better than nothing) Spent ages working with mplayer - only to discover that the dxr3 support is broken... tried to fix it by getting a newer version of mplayer and compiling that, but it complained about missing header files for the dxr3 (very strange - where have they gone since the last compile of mplayer? Or maybe I had copied them into the mplayer source dir instead - can't remember off hand - anyhoo I can sort that). Tried an older release of freevo 1.3.2-pre4 binary - and hay presto, TVout via the dxr3... sweet! I'm currently loading the modules by hand and then uploading the microcode... rebooting doesn't have any affect for me. If I run ./em8300setup -q first it complains that I need to upload the microcode first, so I run ./em8300setup and it returns... Ok not 100% sure about this but I've just tried playing an mpeg 1 file thru mplayer on a remote shell (not sure if doing it this way will work but I can't see why not - even though I can't physically see the output :-). tried mplayer -vo dxr3 -ao oss://em8300_ma-0 test.mpg and mplayer -vo dxr3 test.mpg But mplayer complains that it can't open the device... == Playing test.mpg MPEG-ES file format detected. Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo, dfbmga and sdl. (that old chestnut)
Thanks Aubin, I've now got it working. As per David Amiel's post I needed to use libsdl cvs. One more thing, I have modified my MPlayer Args in local_config.py to use dfbmga:buffermode=triple. Can I easilly modify freevo to use this at startup. This may be of benefit to others as it doesnt need the vsync kernel patch to get best results. Not that I suppose it makes much difference to the menu's. Yes thats what I thought, I'm running 0.9.19 I found out that the ebuild for libsdl is the problem; at the moment it disables the DirectFB-support to avoid circular dependencies (SDL-DirectFB-SDL). Yes thats what I thought, I'm running 0.9.19 I found out that the ebuild for libsdl is the problem; at the moment it disables the DirectFB-support to avoid circular dependencies (SDL-DirectFB-SDL). I changed the ebuild by hand to get DirectFB-support. It's just commented out. Remove the comment marks and do a 'emerge libsdl'. I think, that fixed it for me... [Freevo-users] DXR3 again...
Hi all, I've been subscribed to the freevo list for a while in an attempt to avoid having to ask stupid questions about setting up freevo... But... I have freevo 1.3.2pre4 running... although with out tuner or tv out... which is my problem... (forget the tv tuner for now I think I can sort that one myself) the tv out with the DXR3 is giving me a real headache... I've been using linux for years now but not really done anything in the way or kernel/driver stuff (compling the odd app or util I can do). The docs at http://dxr3.sourceforge.net/howto.html#compilinggo on about changing KERNEL_LOCATION to wherever you current kernel source tree is... (REDHAT 9 by the way) but the problem is i've installed newer kernels via redhat network and the src option was turned off (Plus my system is an old BP6 dual processor so I have both SMP and single pro kernels) and I really don't know where to start looking for a 2.4.20-19.8 or .9 smp kernel source in either my own distro (lib would be my guess) or on the net... and I have been looking on and off for the past few days... Can I not get a precompled driver as a module? Did I read in the mailing list that it is supported in the run time now? So does that mean I don't need to mess about with all this driver compliation? Cheers, Mark
[Freevo-users] Kernel patches?
Currently finishing off installing my gentoo system, compiling the kernel at the moment (I have a feeling it won't be the last time I do it for this system). The hardware I have is a Radeon 7000 (for tv output), a wintv 878 based card with a remote control and a a cheapo cmi8738 soundcard. The machine will be used for watching tv, playing dvd's and divx's primarilly. What kernel options/patches should I be using? I've made sure to enable stuff for the most blatantly obvious but there is always something you miss. Are there any required kernel patches for the above hardware so they can be used under freevo? Okay, just created the /usr/local/portage dir and emerge seems to work.. But it wants to emerge kde-base/kde-env-3-r2, x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r2 etc I've got X11, kde etc set as -X, -kde etc in make.conf USE settings... Does freevo absolutely require them? Ie. Thanks, but now I need to find a way to stop freevo from wanting qt etc. Even though I do... USE=-X -kde -qt -gnome -gtk emerge -p freevo It still shows X, qt etc in there... I've heard of the time it takes to compile qt and no way in hell do I want to compile that... What does freevo want with qt? This is on a P3 500 btw. [Freevo-users] Does Freevo require X?
Just curious since I've currently got a gentoo system compiling, its only going to be used for freevo to output to a tv. From what I've read on the freevo website it seems to require it, mostly I'd prefer it not to cos I expect X will take ages to compile. Re: [Freevo-users] WinTV cards
I just installed a PVR250 last night as well and didn't have to patch or recompile my kernel either. I also had to set the tuner input to 4 instead of the stated 0. I actually found the mythtv docs had some helpful information on setting the card up as well. These are the docs I found helpful: http://ivtv.sourceforge.net/FAQ.html http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-19.html#pvr250 Mark Nysen On Fri, 2003-07-18 at 10:06, Aubin Paul wrote: If this is the PVR250, I didn't need to patch my kernel at all; just extract the firmware, build the modules, and modprobe them. I have the microsoft wenfonts, I have also asked a friend to look on his windows system, the closest I can come is arialbd.ttf. I dont know if this is the same font or not. I could just use the binary runtime. I can live with that. Unless it is beneficial to others to look for this font so as to prove where the Gentoo problem is. [Freevo-users] Does anyone use the dxr3 or hollywood plus?
I've had this hollywood plus decoder card for ages and on the Freevo site it mentions you can use one for tv output. Does that mean it can display the freevo ui etc or does it just display decoded mpeg's etc. Kinda curious since it would be nice to use that for tv output instead of buying a graphics card capable of tv output. I have a spare voodoo 3 sitting around but that's vga out only. By my knowledge doesn't it display only the decoded mpeg video only? I wouldn't know since I've never used it with a tv, just ordered a s-video to scart connector for my tv though. :) Thanks Mark --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: INetU Attention Web Developers Consultants: Become An INetU Hosting Partner. RE: [Freevo-users] Does anyone use the dxr3 or hollywood plus?
Very clever. Some divx's don't play well? Surely encoding it as a mpeg stream in realtime would take up most of the cpu time, even on a p3 800? Gotta hand it to whoever thought of encoding it as a mpeg stream then sending it to the card, very ingenuis. Thanks for the info Mark -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Stefan Strandberg Sent: 25 June 2003 22:04 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Freevo-users] Does anyone use the dxr3 or hollywood plus? I am using one in my setup right now. It displays teh menus and everything through the dxr3 (in my case, Hollywood RealMagic+). It is nice, because it fills up the entire TV screen as supposed to leaving black bars which I got with my TNT2 Ultra... The drawback to it is that everything must be converted to mpg to go out to the card, so some stuff doesn't play well on slower CPUs...I have a celery 500 at the moment, and TV was impossible, and some divxs don't play well. I have a pentium 3 800 that I haven't gotten around to putting into the machine yet that will hopefully solve the issues. The other problem is you lose keyboard input while mplayer is running...you need to get a remote control, which is kinda a pain. I don't think there is any way to code around that at all. All you can do with the keyboard is hit Ctrl-C to stop the movie, but it also kills freevo, so in my case I need to blindly hit up, enter to restart it. You could probably get around it by having a bash script that would restart freevo whenever it sensed that it died...You still won't be able to pause/fast forward/anything though... -stefan Mark Casey wrote: I've had this hollywood plus decoder card for ages and on the Freevo site it mentions you can use one for tv output. [Freevo-users] RE: Radeon 7000 TV-Out will not sync video
Looks like my problem is that the card is coming up in PAL mode, and I live in NTSC land. Anyone know a good way to change the mode from Linux? I tried atitvout. It says the mode is changed, but still no sync. The card works fine in Windoze (with the Win2000 driver set to NTSC). It looks like I can read, edit, and flash the bios, but that does not look like much fun. Any other ideas? My problem seems to be a little different. In my case, the video will not sync (looks like a horizontal hold problem). This happens during boot (text mode) and after X starts. It's like it has the wrong sync rate or something. I have tried the instructions in the Install Wiki - that got X started - but I can't get the flicker to go away. Any suggestions (besides replace the video card with a 400)? Thanks, Mark
