I don't agree, Jaguar is a full feature upgrade and I would argue that

Re: Energy saver problems under Jag?

I'm having similar problems with my Pismo Powerbook (400 MHZ). The symptoms
seem similar to yours, but also if I close the lid to force it sleep, while
the light pulses, the hard drive aparently does not go to sleep; it will
make noises like it's accessing data but I have no idea what. Has Apple had
anything to say about this?

Has anyone else noticed their powerbook won't sleep under the energy
saver pref? My bronze will sleep under the sleep command, and wakes up
without problem (faster than 10.1.5), but won't sleep if unused for any
length of time set. The screen will blacken, but the sleep light
doesn't pulse, and a touch of the trackpad (which won't wake a book
from sleep) brings the screen back. A friend's Bronze has the same
problem. It even showed up in the new TiBook in the Short Hills, NJ,
Apple store. So far I haven't heard anyone else with this problem.
Settings have no effect on the problem, either under AC or battery.

Re: .Mac

2002-09-24 Thread Mark Britt

I had a iTools but opted not to pay for .Mac. The reason: I used my .mac address as a
vanity address. Thinking it was going to be permanent, I told everyone to send mail
to me at my mac.com address, which I simply had forwarded to my email address that I
got through my ISP.

My problem with the way Apple has handled this transition is not that they are
charging for .Mac (more power to 'em!), but that they didn't recognize that some of us
loyal Mac users (I wrote my Master's thesis on an original Mac, when it was bleeding
edge) didn't use any of the iTools services other than the email address. Not even any
email storage space. Apple should give away email addresses without any storage
space--it's basically free advertising for them (I've had many people ask me about
it--do you work for Apple now?--that kind of thing). It would be a win-win
situation--they get advertising, I get a permanent email address that I can just keep
forwarding to my ISP du jour. Instead they ticked me off because I had to (yet again)
change my email address.

It's been a standard since the 1400 powerbook.

The problem is the operating system and how it handles the command. I

Jag Issues (Ti667)

2002-09-24 Thread Ryan Coleman

1) Takes 15 minutes to get off the boot screen and into a 50%grey,
then X loads in 35 seconds.
2) first install: 6.5 hours on a blank hard drive. Second install 3.5
hours without installing second disc (no printer drivers, additional
applications, etc).
3) Update process to 10.2.1, security updates and iTunes 3.0 took 110
minutes. (No, I have cable).
4) IE loads in 2 minutes, when its nice.
5) Eudora runs fast. It's the only thing that runs right. Which is
helpful since I need my email.

On a lighter note:
9.2.2 loads in 14.3 seconds. IE loads in 2, Office 2001 applications
load in under 1. The only applications that load slowly are
java-based clients.

I want a tech to tell me what is wrong with my book. Not a generic
response but an actual diagnosis. I will run applications on my end
to test if need be. I love X, I am starting to hate this computer,
though.

Without getting my hands on it, no one could likely give you an actual
diagnosis.

The first thing I would try would be to run the Apple Hardware Test
that came with your PowerBook.

Second, I would remove any extra RAM you've installed.

If AHT gives no error codes, I would use OS 9's Drive Setup to Zero All
Data on the drive, then try to install OS X again and see how long it
takes.

My guess is a hard drive problem, but it could be RAM or processor
related as well.

The firewire port is bad and apple knows it. If I had a car I would
drive the 15 miles to the store at Mall of America and give it to
them and have it taken away on location. But I don't.

AHT gives back no errors. Never has with any computer I have had with
problems. I did a complete Zero the first time installed X.2. I
hadn't run X in 2 months at that point.

I removed the extra 256 and tried that the first time, no help. Apple
Store even ran AHT and got no errors when I was last in the store in
late July. I am scheduled to get a new lobo but I cannot afford to
lose the computer for any period of time. If I only had my
certification for these computers I would have apple send me the new
lobo and I would do the install myself.

Also, I am about to go through the 4th power adapter for this computer. UGH!

OT-new Powerbook recommendation

2002-09-24 Thread John Slavin

My sister is thinking about buying a new Powerbook and has her eyes on a
Powerbook G4. She's recently retired and is looking at a system for
working on photos she accumulated over her lifetime. So, I need
recomendations on the following:

Powerbook G4-what model and configuration
printer-obviously needs to print good photos with long lasting inks
scanner (also needs slides capability)
digital still camera
software for working on photos. Any recomendations other than photoshop
which would serve for basic touchups and is reasonably easy to use.

Anybody seen any bundles with most of this stuff?

I want a tech to tell me what is wrong with my book. Not a generic
response but an actual diagnosis. I will run applications on my end
to test if need be. I love X, I am starting to hate this computer,
 though.

You'd have to ship it to me to diagnose it. You can't accurately
diagnose a problematic Mac through e-mail discussions. That being said, I
would Run Apple's Hardware test and then Tech Tool Pro. I would also
suggest doing a Nuke and Pave. Zero all data on the drive and do a
re-install. This will take a lng time, but will eliminate a lot of
possibilities.

There is definitely something wrong with your system Ryan. You need to have
it looked at BEFORE something bad happens and you lose important data. I
would guess you have a Hard Disk problem or bad Ram, but it is impossible to
tell without getting my hands on it.

Outdoor screen

2002-09-24 Thread Jim Katz

I am dismayed with the uselessness of my TiBook in bright outdoor light.
Probably this is a general laptop problem. Is there an outboard outdoor
monitor screen that uses the kind of technology for overhead projectors or
something like that? Heck, I can see bits of the screen backlighted through
the Apple logo - this should be possible.

There are screens that you can mount to your laptop--actually
hoods--that enable you to see clearly. Seems like a pain to me. I've
tried only once (with a clamshell iBook) to use it in sunlight. Didn't
work very well.

I was looking for info today on backlights (my son's iBook light died)
and found all kinds of interesting threads on designing something to use
ambient light through the back of a clear computer lid.

I disable the bulb (saving battery and display life) and angle the laptop
with the sun so that it provides the lumination I need. It increases
battery life by up to 55% on my TiBook.

I am also an Apple shareholder. I'm pretty cheap too. I have to be
after the drubbing I took on the stock over the last couple of years.
But I paid full price to Apple for Jaguar because it offered massive
improvement for the money. No regrets there. But of iTools, I also
only ever used the email, which was a nice luxury and pretty cool.
Speaking of cheap, I think the best cheap way to get a full featured
G4 Pbook is to plop an upgrade card into a Pismo. I'm thinking of
finding a 400 mhz Pismo and trading in the old Wallstreet 300.

p.s. I have a copy of Office 98 gold for sale. Has the cdkey and is
original. Email me off-list if interested. I am trying to build up
my G4 piggybank. 8^)

Has anyone heard anything about a release date for iSync? The Apple web

it is Bluetooth-only. Any ideas?

What system choices do I have? Can I run OS X??
