You can order a 12 with a larger hard drive and I don't think that I
would notice any difference between 1.2GHz and 1.33Ghz.

screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread VicNaz1
OK, I had a person give me a hard time about a 12 inch LCD screen size and I
want to know, do people genuinely have serious complaints about 12 inch
screens? I have two units with 12 inch screens, on with a 15 inch, one with a
9.5
inch (my PowerPC PB540c) and even an old black and white PB 170 with a 640 x
400
screen.

I find that 12 inch is fine. My blueberry iBook is a wonderful, use-able unit
and the only time I have a problem with screen size is when some dufis
designs an application program with too many pallets and menu pannels that
can't be
resized or hidden.

OK, here's the kicker, the complaint wasn't about a 12 inch LCD on a
powerbook or iBook, it was my father's current wife complaining about the
heavily
upgraded, 500MHz G3 powered 20th Annaversary Macintosh. I have one just like it
and it's one of the finest units ever designed, essentially a PowerBook in a
desktop case with a fantastic sterio built in.

Back to my original question, do people have genuine issues with 12 inch
screen size?

Thye argument isn't whether there's a difference, but whether it's
worth it *to you* - how much you move it around, how much you do with
the screen real estate.

I have a 17, drag it to a couple meetings a month plus to every room
of the house, and I'd never give up my screen real estate. I can work
on a full page of a landscape legal layout, plus have all its palettes
open in Ragtime (something I do every week for our church bulletin),
wherever I am - on the couch, at my parents', at my sister's, wherever.
An external monitor just doesn't offer that! Though I wouldn't mind
that for the (very) rare occasion that I actually work at a desk. :-)

Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread Marcin Wichary
Back to my original question, do people have genuine issues with 12
inch
screen size?
Of course they do, but people will have issues with basically
everything, because computers are used for so many things.

If you're an average graphic designer, 12 inches is just too small. The
1024x768 resolution doesn't provide enough real estate for all the
palettes. In theory, you can make the resolution (density) bigger to
some extent, but then the pixels will be just too small for human eye.
You will have to make the widgets/fonts bigger, and you're back to
square one. Remember you're talking about people who Apple designed
30-inch LCDs for. Including the possibility of putting two of them side
by side.

For other uses, 12-inch displays might be perfect. Keep in mind that
people were using 9 Macintoshes (or even those tiny 5 screens on
Osbornes earlier) and getting their work done.

(I've deliberately left out the distinction between portable and
stationary computers, which was absent in the original question.)

I have and still use a 366 graphite iBook and I bought a new PowerBook
around 8 months ago 12 with a superdrive and 768meg of ram. I like the
size of the PowerBook and really don't have any issues with the smaller
screen over the 15. I have used a 17 PowerBook from time to time
(brother in law's) and though it is nice it not pleasant to lug around,
the biggest plus being the screen real estate that you have. I still
use the iBook and don't have any problems with the screen size outside
of resolution limitations for some of the new programs, but I can deal
with it.

Yes. Before I parted with mine a couple of years ago I'd installed a
total of 512 in it, and it worked quite well. In fact, I traded it to a
friend and it's still running great with system 10.2. IIRC, you'll need
a low profile RAM for the bottom slot.

Maybe yes, maybe no. I have heard some grumbles with some
brands of 256MB DIMMs. Just be sure to get a low-profile
DIMM for the bottom slot. There isn't room for the normal
sized one. Best if seller specifies the DIMM is for the
Wallstreet bottom slot.

Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread Andrew F.
12 was the big-size in 1997, and remains a comfortable size for a laptop
screen. 14 or larger is great for extended viewing or poor eyesight.

What really matters is resolution, with 1024X768 being the minimum useful
resolution today as many websites are simply wider than 800 pixels and
horizontal scrolling is a royal pain. Of course, all of Apple's current 12
panels are 1024X768, as is their 14, so the only real difference is the
actual size of the pixels, not how many there are. 12 is a comfortable
size, 14 is just a little bit more comfortable, but at a price in size and
weight that is just too high for a truly portable machine.

Honestly I consider my 12 Aluminum to be a bit too large for frequent
travel and would prefer something the size and weight of my old Toshiba
Portege (11 screen, same 1024X768 resolution, no optical drive and 3lbs),
but Apple doesn't make one. For home use, I'm getting quite attached to
this Pismo I just bought.

I bought from them for my first BW and had to take out the memory in

I have a fifteen inch screen iBook and have used a 12 screen iBook.
They have the same resolution (1024x768. I prefer the 15 because
it's easier on the eyes. But the 12 is quite useable and amazingly
clear. I think if I were to use one steadily it might get to me. I
think it comes down to what you are comfortable with.

Newer screens are usually sharper. I also have a collection of older

I'm using a 12 inch iBook (G4) and I love it. I have no difficulty with
reading ANYTHING. I use Word and Photoshop on it and it's just fine. Now,
some people will complain.but this iBook is fast and very portable. I
use it more than my desktop.
My wife just replace her old 12 inch powerbook with a 14 inch iBook because
she didn't like having to use her reading glassesbut she used the
powerbook for over 2 years.
12 inch display is just fine. Now my 20 inch G5 iMac is really enjoyable,
but I can't pick it up and carry it around with me.

Video problems on WS I

2005-01-01 Thread James Sanderson
I have received a first generation 233 WS and have already begun
mapping out the needed improvements to make it worthy of the Wallstreet
name. However, I need to know what might be the cause of the video
occasionally going blank. It looks like someone just upped the
brightness to the extreme and I can't reset it unless I restart. Might
it be the PMU? an inverter going out?

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2005-01-01 Thread Andrew F.
How could a one inch slab of plastic alongside the keys be useful. My Pismo
and 12 PowerBook have the same keybaord size, and the only ergonomic
advantages to the Pismo are that the screen is higher and the text is
larger. For touch typing, the 12 PowerBook is actually a far more
comfortable machine to type on because its keys have much better action.

Hands never rest on the 3/4 strip of plastic on the sides of the keyboard,
and that space has no ergonomic benefit. The deeper palmrest may have some
benefit, but the difference is very minor.

The only reason the 14 iBook and larger PowerBooks have space alongside
their keyboards is because those large screens are much wider than the
standard Apple laptop keyboards. Now if Apple used that space by fitting
larger keys, or on the 17 PowerBook by including a full numeric keypad,
that would be an ergonomic improvement.

Nope. The Wallstreet uses SO-DIMM's, as do the early (Rev A-D) iMacs.
They take one low-profile, and one standard (or both low-profile). The
BW uses standard PC100/133 DIMMS. Two different animals.

keyboard,
and that space has no ergonomic benefit. The deeper palmrest may have
some
benefit, but the difference is very minor.
That space has no ergonomic benefit indeed, but the corresponding space
on the palmrest has. When you type, you shouldn't have your arms
perpendicular to the space bar, but at a certain, comfortable angle. If
your palmrest is not wide enough, this forces your arms to use a
different angle (people tend to do that subconsciously), which
translates to more chances of RSI in longer run.

Now, I don't say that it's exactly the case with 12 vs. 14 iBook, but
I presume it's the same situation with 12 vs. 15 PowerBook. I have a
PowerBook 15 which is great, and I tried 12 once, but it was just
much less comfortable, for the reason I outlined above.

The only reason the 14 iBook and larger PowerBooks have space
alongside
their keyboards is because those large screens are much wider than the
standard Apple laptop keyboards. Now if Apple used that space by
fitting
larger keys, or on the 17 PowerBook by including a full numeric
keypad,
that would be an ergonomic improvement.
I seriously disagree here. As far as I see, the keys on Apple's laptops
are roughly the same size as standalone keyboards, and I see nothing
but trouble with bigger keys.

With full numeric keyboard, you'd have to have your hands moved to the
left most of the time (for the alphanumerical part), which is just bad
for your posture, would probably necessitate moving trackpad to the
left as well (bad aesthetics), and your left palmrest would be too
narrow, as I mentioned above already.

You get what you pay for.
I've never had problems with memory from Data Memory Corp,
http://www.datamem.com and while they're not always the very
cheapest, I'm more than willing to avoid the endless and
hard-to-diagnose problems you get from bad RAM.

I had bad RAM in my 7600 once.
What happened is that my internal SCSI bus went away when I put in my
G4 upgrade card. This persisted when I replaced my motherboard. I
figured it was an issue with the G4 card and put it up on the shelf,
pissed off. (It was an old JoeCard I'd gotten on clearance, the
original company was no longer in existence and I couldn't return it)

Months later I bought 2 new 128 MB RAM sticks (from Datamem) and
discovered that not all my RAM now showed up.

Painstakingly checking, DIMM by DIMM, I discovered that everything
would work by itself, but that when some of my older sticks were in the
system the new 128 MB sticks didn't show up.

I bought another 128 MB stick at $24 and replaced all of the motley old
collection of 16 and 32 MB sticks and the system ran far better and
crash-free than before.

On a hunch, I re-installed the G4 upgrade. Not a hitch.
Saving a couple of bucks is NOT worth that kind of aggravation!

Nope. The Wallstreet takes PC-100 144 pin SO DIMMs while the
BW takes PC-100 3.3v, unbuffered, non-parity 168 pin SDRAM.

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2005-01-01 Thread Andrew F.
The 15 and 17 PowerBooks are much wider machines than the 12, but the 14
iBook and older 14 PowerBooks are not wide enough to get any benefit. Of
course, to be wide enough to give some benefit (15 and 17 PB) makes the
machine too wide to be used well as a portable, making it really a portable
desktop.

Personally, I bought my 12 to use as a true portable, a decision I have
never regretted, especially when I see people trying to use bigger laptops
such as Titanium PowerBooks in crowded airplanes. I actually saw some poor
idiot's 17 PowreBook get pushed by a passing flight attendant, the result
was a spilled drink on another passenger, the flight attendant visibly in
pain and the PowerBook face down on the floor with a sickening crunch,
followed by a whole lot of shouting by the fool who tried to use a massive
shelf of a computer in a confined space.

The 12, in contrast, is so small that even if the passenger in front of me
reclines, I won't have my screen crunched. That, and of course I still have
room on my tray table, as opposed to bleeding over into another person's
space. The 15 isn't that bad, but it still can't touch the 12 for
portability and light weight. Of course, the 12 is such a delight to type
on that I've never wished for anything larger for that purpose.

Speaking of RSI, by the way, your hands shouldn't be touching the palmrest
AT ALL, making a wider one of dubious benefit. The only time I can see a
benefit of a large palmrest area is for sliding around a small optical mouse
or as a surface to write rest your post-it pad on for writing real
pen-and-paper notes. The 12, by the way, has a very generous palmrest and
is an ergonomic delight, as far as laptops go with their low screens that
force bent necks.

Re: screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread Al Poulin
It seems that many of the answers flowing here on this New Year's Day
are missing the point of the question. The original poster's father's
wife is apparently a middle-aged to older person. But we do not know
whether her corrected eyesight is 20/20 or 20/100.

Yes, a 12 inch screen may be a serious hindrance for someone with less
than average eyesight. There are many eye conditions that will
preclude use of a 12 inch screen at 1024 x 768 resolution. In one
example, a person with cataracts may fail reading that 12 inch screen,
but the same person after cataract removal and artificial lens
replacement with rejuvenated vision at 20/20 or better can now enjoy
that 12 incher.

Well, speaking of RSI, you shouldn't be typing at all, especially on a
notebook. :) I have yet to see anyone who actually types WITHOUT their
palms touching the palmrest, by the way.

But to each their own, I guess, and seeing that this thread has once
again moved to focus on the size of the whole unit, as opposed to
keyboards and palmrests, I don't think there's any point to rehash it
once again. Over and out.

screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread Gary Goldberg
I have a 13.3 Wall Street.

Perhaps I'm spoiled by the external 17
monitor I've used the past few years to
made surfing and working easier, but
when I travel I find the smaller screen
size confining and some smaller print
on websites harder to read.

Best reason for using an external monitor
at home if you have a smaller screen:
it prolongs the life of the screen, the
most expensive part of the laptop!

the pinky fingers, poised to move wherever on the keyboard I might

Actually, my pinkies was running up alongside the keyboard (esp. the

Don't know how I'd be without that space, but I clearly use it quite a
lot (now that I'm watching where my hands sit).

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2005-01-01 Thread Brian Rule
I've used laptops larger an more bulky than my 14 on airplanes with no
issues, although, airplane use doesn't matter much to me since I don't
really travel like that these days. My 14, like i've said, goes
nearly everywhere with me, and with no effort. I often hear people
complain about how difficult it is to move and travel with such big
and bulky computers. My experience has been that such people are
either too lazy or too out of shape to realize how light and compact
these laptops really are.
I've tried smaller laptops, sure. Wanna know how I use that extra
space on either side of the computer? To keep the thing on my lap. A
12 laptop slips around and is unstable in my lap unless i hunch myself
in as though I were typing on some playing card. Using a 12 LAPTOP on
my LAP is very uncomfortable. As for weight, one extra pound really
isn't that much. Sure I COULD find a smaller laptop, but to be honest,
I only have one bag in which my laptop does not fit well, and that's
because it's the smallest gym bag I could find.
The extra palm space does indeed come in handy, since I do use it to
rest my palms often, whether it's proper typing or not. And, as
surmised, it does come in handy for writing a note or post it.

Nope. All Apple laptop repair that is *in* warranty has to be done at one
of 2 service centers. Dallas and Memphis. Memphis handles iBooks and
older. Dallas handles Powerbooks. They can add RAM etc, but a Hard Drive
will void your warranty. I used to manage a tech shop (just 8 months ago)
and I am an Apple Certified Desktop and Portable technician. You can't
even go into GSX (apple's online suite of ordering software and warranty
history etc...) and order the parts. It errors out with a this part is for
depot repair only please call blah blah blah... If someone tosses in a HD
from an over the counter source like CompUSA then your warranty is now void.
Apple Depot technicians are trained to look to see if you have been messing
around inside your laptop or not when they start the repair at the depot. I
have toured both facilities (as well as the parts facility in Elk Grove Ca.)
and they have a system set up. The figure they gave us was that 20% of all
incoming laptops were not repaired due to customer negligence or abuse.

My warranty expired three days before I did the upgrade, which I did myself,
though it was far from an easy job (as it is on older G3 PowerBooks).

Re: Less is more or Bigger is better

2005-01-01 Thread Andrew F.
12 PowerBook fits great on my lap. By the way, I am neither lazy nor out
of shape, and the extra pound or more of a large laptop DOES make a
difference when carried all day. My 12 PB weighs a bit under 2lbs less
than my Pismo, and for carrying around town as I go from place to place, in
and out of the car, or across an airport, it makes a real difference. Of
course, the bag for the 12 itself is much lighter than the bag for the 14,
despite both being Brenthavens with similar construction and materials.
With the 12 I tend to travel light, bringing only a lightweight universal
power supply (AC/Auto/Air) and as little else as possible, kind of forced by
the small bag. With the larger bag there is a tendency to throw more stuff
into it, stuff that gets heavy and can usually be done without anyway, like
portable printers, scanners, drives and the like. With the 12, I just
throw a few DVDs into clear plastic CD sleeves (cases are bulky) and any
papers (or pages copied from books) that I may need into the case and that
is it for my computer case.

I used to carry a 7lb monster and it is so liberating to carry a 4.6 pound
lightweight in its place.

I've used laptops larger an more bulky than my 14 on airplanes with no

really travel like that these days.

The 12, in contrast, is so small that even if the passenger in front

 still have
room on my tray table, as opposed to bleeding over into another

portability and light weight. Of course, the 12 is such a delight to
 type
on that I've never wished for anything larger for that purpose.

Speaking of RSI, by the way, your hands shouldn't be touching the
 palmrest
AT ALL, making a wider one of dubious benefit. The only time I can
 see a
benefit of a large palmrest area is for sliding around a small optical
 mouse
or as a surface to write rest your post-it pad on for writing real
pen-and-paper notes. The 12, by the way, has a very generous
 palmrest and
is an ergonomic delight, as far as laptops go with their low screens
 that
 force bent necks.

That space has no ergonomic benefit indeed, but the corresponding
 space
on the palmrest has. When you type, you shouldn't have your arms
perpendicular to the space bar, but at a certain, comfortable angle.
 If
your palmrest is not wide enough, this forces your arms to use a
different angle (people tend to do that subconsciously), which
 translates to more chances

Yes, Di-No in Pasadena wanted $80 for the job and are fully Apple
authorized. I used to be a tech support trainer (in the PowerBook 5300

As a guy with lots of experience inside modern laptops, the 12 PB was still
VERY difficult to take apart and reassemble, so next time I'll just spend
the $80 at Di-No, as I would have had I still been in warranty.

The flip-up screen on the Pismo is wonderful for tinkering, but the rigid
mount keyboard on the aluminum books are just delightful. I don't get why
the 12 and even 14 iBooks are so difficult to swap hard drives on though,
as they have flip-up KBs like the Pismo and Lombard, I call that poor design
on the newer models.

I had an IBM X21 that only required 1 screw to access the hard drive, which
slid right out of the side of the computer. This easy access was in a
computer considerably smaller and lighter than my 12 PB, and what I
consider terrific industrial design.

graphic design or audio work, or almost anything else where lots of screen
real estate is needed in a transportable computer, which is what the 17 PB
is, a transportable, rather than a portable.

The National Enquirer reports at 10:27 PM -0800 12/29/04, Ken wrote:

My Reply follows quote. On 29/12/2004 20:32 [EMAIL PROTECTED] said:

Was wondering about swapping CD and floppy module's, etc. Do I need to

Modules, even batteries, if using AC, can be inserted and removed
while the machine is live.

Expansion-bay modules. Correct. The term is hot-swappable. The only
items that might have unusual swap guidelines are some USB and
FireWire peripherals (we're talking about using PCMCIA cards for
these on a Wallstreet).

Also, will I need to shut down to add or remove external keyboard or mouse?

Hmm. Not sure of the official advice, but the ADB and serial ports on
other Macs generally carry the warning to shut down before connecting
or disconnecting.

P.S.

Just checked the User Manual.

No mention of turning off for Printers.
Shut down of sleep for modems.
WARNING When connecting SCSI equipment, always turn off power to
all devices in the chain, including your computer. If you don't, you
could lose information and damage your equipment.
IMPORTANT You must shut down the computer or put it in sleep before
connecting an ADB device.

I don't know which manual you checked, but the ADB devices on a
Wallstreet are also hot-swappable. As I recall, it was the 1st
PowerBook to be so (and maybe the only one, I'm not positive about
that).

Because of the power (5v) on the SCSI line, it has always been shut
down before adding or removing devices even though some people have
gotten by hot-swapping SCSI devices for years.

The bottom line is no, you don't have to shut down (or even put to
sleep) your Wallstreet when adding or removing ADB mice or keyboards
or expansion-bay modules. HOWEVER, if the ADB devices have 3rd-party
drivers, they may not be enabled without rebooting (i.e Kensington
multi-button mice).

Yes, but watch out for chip density. Here's a clip from an earlier
discussion in the thread Adding RAM to WS II:

Nils Said:

Nice! It appears that these machines support a chip density of 8M with a
width of 32 bits. Even though that configuration isn't listed, it could be
the next logical step.

The pdf also states that the machine is to use SDRAM memory with a rating of
100MHz or greater. This would make sense as a recommendation because the
250 and 292MHz systems run on a 83MHz system bus. Where as the 233, 266
and 300MHz systems run on a 66MHz system bus. To make it less likely for
customers
to run into memory speed related issues, just tell them to use PC100.

 Of
course, to be wide enough to give some benefit (15 and 17 PB) makes the
machine too wide to be used well as a portable, making it really a portable

Unless you think portable means moving around while in use I strongly
disagree, at least for 15, which I feel is a good compromise.

such a delight to type
on that I've never wished for anything larger for that purpose
What if you do more than type?

What I'm waiting for is wearables to happen with floating 20 images in
glasses. I suppose key chords is the only way to go to make that work.
Maybe wearables never will compete with portables, just open up new
avenues of usage. They really should be around the corner technically,
but there most likely will be yet some time for any siginificant market
demand.

By the way, I am neither lazy nor out

difference when carried all day.
Not in a backpack, it doesn't. This is definitively one of the best ways
to carry a portable computer around. I don't notice a pound more or less.

Re: Wallstreet

Bob

Maybe so, but my quotes were clipped directly from the user's
manual. Smoke at your own risk!
