Hmmm, nope, sorry. Once it's been downloaded, you have to purchase it
again
if you want to download it again. Or if there is a problem with it,
you can
contact the iTunes Music Store customer support and they will usually
credit
you with another download for the same song. I did it a few times after
downloading a song that wouldn't play correctly.
You're right. I would've sworn that I read it's possible. Pity. Kind of
strange, too, since they probably have your full download history
anyway, and it's against the idea of pay once, own forever. On the
other hand, iTunes MS is not a subscription service...

Thanks much to all who responded. OS (.1 had no driver for this drive, but
I was able to get it going using the full Iomegaware install (previously a
dl of just their driver produced no results). An added bonus- while poking
around for a VST driver for the zip disk I ran into one for my VST
SuperDisk. Thanks!

Re: Apple menu additions

2005-01-06 Thread Luis Sequeira
There is a way to somehow reproduce this behaviour in Mac OS X, that
requires no extra software: create a folder, name it whatever you
choose, say Apple Menu. Put aliases to stuff you would like to have
on your Apple Menu. Drag this folder to the Dock (unfortunately, you
can only put it at the end closest to the trash can). There you have
your Apple Menu in the Dock. You can add or delete from your Apple
Menu folder at will and changes will be reflected immediately, as in
 the original version.
 Luis Sequeira
Luis,
Have you tried that yourself? I just gave it a go, initially trying with an
alias of my hard drive, thinking I could easily navigate to any folder on
it. However, the Dock doesn't take it. I've tried with a simple folder, no
go. It seems the Dock will only accept applications or documents, no folder.
Or am I missing something?
-Laurent.
--
Laurent,
I have dragged my Applications folder to the Dock and it works, *But*
I have to either click and hold or control-click. I forgot to mention
this (I actually don't use it that much). It produces a hierarchic
menu (in a brief test I went up to six levels of nested folders :-)).

Remember, it MUST go in the section of the dock where the trash can
is. You can't just put it beside your documents (or it is rejected,
which, it appears, is what happened to you).

I am running Panther, but I think it should work in Jaguar also (but
don't have any Jaguar running mac to test it).

Re: Ram in a Wallstreet

2005-01-06 Thread Luis Sequeira

There's no RAM 'on board' on any G3 series Powerbook.
The Kanga is a G3 PowerBook. It has 32-Mb RAM on the logic board.
Both posters are right...
The expression G3 SERIES Powerbook does not include the Kanga; and
all G3 SERIES Powerbooks have no ram onboard.

And the Kanga IS a G3 Powerbook and has ram onboard.
The naming can be confusing, as has at times been discussed aplenty
on this list.

This site IS invaluable, simply for the location of the plastic tabs,
etc. I think I used an old credit card to slide and 'pop' the plastic
without breaking anything.

There are a LOT, repeat LOT of screws to remove, and definite
order to replacement.
I have a method that really helps me. I get a bunch of different
colored permanent markers, and then when I remove a screw, I color both
the top of the screw and the hole it came from with a color and drop it
in a muffin pan cup. With each screw, I carefully compare it to what
I've already removed before, and if it matches one I've already
removed, I use the identical color and drop it in the same cup, but if
it's different, I choose a new color and new muffin cup. I don't color
the exterior screws that are visible, only the interior ones. It takes
a little while, but when you're done you'll see there are only about 6
or 7 different screws total. Reassembly is super easy, just match the
colors and screw. It goes very fast, and any hole that's missing a
screw is easy to see. You never replace the wrong screw in the wrong
hole.

Simple instructions: Place iBook in front of you. Remove everything
that isn't a hard drive. Place new HDD on table in front of you.
Re-assemble iBook around drive. :-) Sort of like replacing the PRAM
battery in a 540...
I did a 520c PRAM battery by using a dremel to enlarge the holder area
a little and then used standard RadioShack thicker larger batteries
(same voltage) that should have at least twice the life of the
originals, plus only cost $3 for two! It was such a hassle I definitely
wasn't going to spend a fortune on the real battery or EVER do it
again. It's been two years and still going.

On the iBook HD subject, any ATA will be OK. I got a standard 4,200 RPM
60 GB for $84 shipped from www.pcmicrostore.com, but I think they're a
little more now? There are 5,400 RPM and even 7,200 RPM drives that are
more expensive and proportionally quicker. They have a 40 GB 5,400 for
$89 and a 60 GB for $115.

Good luck! Kris

Display Acting Up? / Bad RAM Stiks? / (Was Jaguar Install on Wallstreet)

2005-01-06 Thread Jason Long
Weird.. It does this now since I upgraded my RAM to 320 MB RAM, but it
wakes up as I play with the Bright Setting Button... Does this every time I
turn it on, also it makes a line of color 1/2 across the screen when
shutting down and stays like that for about 30-45 seconds. Should I worry
about that?? Display Going out? Or does it just don't like the RAM Sticks I
put in which I got from OWC the other day. Running OS X on it now..
Much faster with the 320 MB RAM In it...

I have an account with paypal, which I used to use all the

your site because now it won't load all the way, with the same settings on
my same computer. I mean I get the header but none of the options. It is
really frustrating, as I want to set up an ebay store for a little business
 here and there.

 General fixes:
 Try using a different browser.
Try deleting the cookies for PayPal.

 I deleted the cookies...no go...

Browser? I am using IE 5.1.7 On OS 8.6 why upgrade when it was working fine
 last spring?

Because Paypal has stopped supporting IE. I wish they would have bothered to
say so on their website. I found out by calling the tech support dept. last
year.

They told me I should be able to use Netscape, but that didn't work for me;
the only browser I can use that works at all in pre-X OS now is Mozilla.
(I'm booted in 9.x much of the time owing to problems I'm having with X.)
Paypal pages load like molasses in Mozilla but they do work.

Re: LaCie drive forcesleeps TiBook 400

2005-01-06 Thread John McGibney
Anyone know what this can be about?
I sleep my TiBook 4oo with powercord in, insert a cordpowered
firewiredrive and the machine refuses to wake up. It's not off, but HD
seems to not spin up, just kinda sims about and display is dark.
Three finger salute with drive disconnected, machine boots up and just
before logging in I sleep it again, inserts the drive, it wakes up and I
login and copy my files, eject the drive, sleeps it again, remove the
drive and now the machine plays dead again. Another forced restart and
 everything is normal.

Now, what conclusions are the to make here? I couldn't find much in the
 system log.

This was discussed elsewhere, the solution was don't plug/unplug USB or
firewire devices while asleep, it causes coma.

Not fun but its the only workable solution so far.

Re: OT-trouble with webpages loading

2005-01-06 Thread Kenneth Vann
Snip

I can't even get the contact us page to load to ask PayPal whatssup!

If need be can anyone contact me offlist to help me fix this, its probably
something wrong with my settings...other websites load just fine.

Kristina

Hi Kristina, here is some info on why you are having problems. I originally
posted this to a yahoo group I belong to.

Paypal and its parent eBay upgrade their software (the new eBay 2.0) on or
about June 5, 2004. They no longer fully support Mac OS 9 browsers. Their
software is designed to work with Windows computers only. They wont admit
this, but that is what has happened.

Here is what I have found out that does not work with Paypal.

iCab, cannot change funding source, it gives you a new page asking to add a
new bank account. Unable to complete payments. Cannot send a trouble report
by their web based system, buttons dont work when you try to send the
report. Prior to this upgrade, iCab worked in all functions. iCab version
2.9.7 2.9.8

IE, pages dont load, buttons dont work, this varies from day to day as
Paypal changes the coding on each page. Unable to complete payments. Prior
to this upgrade, IE works in all functions. IE version 5.1.7

Opera, will work but I dont like it. Opera v6.0.3

Netscape, have have tried it, seems to work ok, but was advised by Paypal
support that it has problems also. Netscape v7.02

In eBay, iCab will lock up computer with large amounts of disk acitivity
(memory usage increases about 36mb per each open window or tab) when you
have more that 3 tabs open. This expierence was with a PB1400/G3/466
upgrade and OS 8.6 9.1 and a iMac/rev a, with OS8.6 and 256mb ram (with
iMac its about 5 tabs open before I get problems). With more than three
tabs open, it can take up to 5 minutes of disk acativity to open or close a
tab, as the computer starts uning VM.

The new Ebay 2.0 also included new and increased advertising for users.
When I created filters to cut down on some of the advertisments, ebay
started downloading 5k and 10k PDF files which were ads. I deleated the
filters and removed the PDF viewer in iCab to stop this.No other web site I
have been to has ever done this. Prior to eBay v2.0 upgrade this was not a
problem.

Its important to note that of all the browsers for the Mac and OS9 or
below, only iCab is still being upgraded. A good reason to suport shareware.

There are thousands if not millions of Mac users with G3 and G4 machines
runing various flavors of OS 9 or below. These users do not want to upgrad
to OSX, some cannot upgrade, but their Mac's are fully capable of surfing
the web. There is no reason not to suport these users.

This is not a problem where your machine is underpowered, this is a coding
problem. Please call Paypal customer service line and let them know you
want them to suport Mac's

PayPal US toll-free at: 1-888-221-1161 or please call 1-402-935-2107.

Avrage hold time 30 minutes.

If you are going to set up a ebay store, I would talk the some merchants
that use PayPal. Here is a link to a PayPal developer fourm. Discussion
about the changes in PayPal service that makes browsers unusable.

http://www.paypaldev.org/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=29

I would try to use Netscape v7 for your computer and see if it is any
better. I use it under OS 8.6.

difficult to install on pre-G3 Powermacs. At least
with OSX you have XPostFacto that sometimes works.

I will give up on Yahoo, of course, if things

Dear Kenneth,

Thanks so much for the info. I didn't think I was that big of a ditz about
this stuff. I am going to call right now and then I guess I'll have to try
Netscape...sigh! I really don't want to change browsers as I really don't
have the time to devote to all the tech time setting my machine to work with
it, learning to import all my bookmarks, setting preferences etc.

What if I find out it won't work either?

I just want to turn the machine on and it goes...like my washing machine!

And this is really hindering my resoulution to get my ebay store up and
running the first week of January!

Dare I upgrade my beige G3 which working just fine to a 9.0 version AND
Netscape?. I can't remember why I have kept my G3 at 8.6 tho, if ain't broke

Or I could just put netscape on my new pb which already has 9.0 and have two
different systems and browsers, that doesn't seem very feng shui for the

So any special tweeks and quirks for netscape as I have never used it would

Yes, that's how spring-loaded folders work, which this is great example

I've gotten to the point that everyone I set up with a new OS X system
I make an alias of their Applications folder there.

For the switchers its the closest analog to the Windows Start menu that
OS X has got.

For old OS 9 users (or OS X users who haven't twigged yet) its a good
example of how to use the dock and simply damned convenient.

No it's primarily a Please, RIAA and Justice Department, don't sue us
out of existence measure.

Apple planned the ITMS and iPod as a linked business from the start.
Pissing off the record labels by essentially making and selling a 20GB
piracy device would have put a mild crimp in their negotiations with
the labels.

I mean look at the freakout the record label folks did over the Rip,
Mix, Burn ad campaign, and it was very careful to state Don't steal
music.

The side effects are inconvenience, and then only if you assume (and
remember what our teachers taught us about that word!) it works 'just
like your Palm'.

In fact, the iPod manual warns about this.
Absolutely nothing about iTunes prevents you from backing up your music
collection, only using your iPod as the backup.

You want to rant about this, aim the rant at the right folks: the
recording industry, the media giants and their tame congresscritters
(or parliamentcritters, depending on where you're at).

Bull...they support Macs just fine. You just have to get off the pot

Netscape went to the Mozilla browser because the netscape 4.x code base
was hopelessly fubar'ed. Supporting 4.x browsers triples or quadruples

I don't know a single web designer who didn't dance the happy dance of

Like Apple did when it dropped Copland and went to NeXT fro Rhapsody,
they realized they just couldn't make the thing work any more and they

The handwriting is on the wall, people. OS 9 is dead. Long Live OS X.

Kanga was the codename for the original PowerBook
G3, like Lombard is the codename for your PowerBook
G3.

You have to hunt a bit for the Mozilla OS9 installer,
its not on Netscape's page as it is an unofficial hack
of a semi-new (OSX-only) build. The build isn't
supported for OS 8.6 (isn't technically supported on
OS9), but it works.

Re: OT-trouble with webpages loading

2005-01-06 Thread Dean
OK, so this answers my question about the Netscape ISP not willing to
support Mac.
As far as OS 9 being dead I guess you will have to stick me in the
ground with it because
after spending a BIG chunk of change on audio hardware that works just
great under
the older OS's, it will be a long long time before I spend another Big
chunk of change
to upgrade.
As far as handwriting on the wall, the only writing I see is
monetarily driven.
If companies didn't make old products obsolete, and convince us that we
need the
newest and coolest, they would go out of business.
But that is the way of the world!
Anyone know where I can get a shiny new G5 cheep!

Bull...they support Macs just fine. You just have to get off the pot
and use a modern OS. OS X has been here for 4 years now, folks. It as
if you were asking them to support Windows 3.11 still...ain't gonna

The tech folks were talking out their a**, though about netscape. They
probably assumed you meant Netscape 4.X. If they support NS 7 on a PC
they support it on a Mac. It's the same program!

Netscape went to the Mozilla browser because the netscape 4.x code
base was hopelessly fubar'ed. Supporting 4.x browsers triples or
quadruples your coding load. AND IT STILL DOESN'T WORK RIGHT!

I don't know a single web designer who didn't dance the happy dance of
endless joy when they got told they didn't have to support 4.x
browsers any more.

Like Apple did when it dropped Copland and went to NeXT fro Rhapsody,
they realized they just couldn't make the thing work any more and they
had to start from scratch.

The handwriting is on the wall, people. OS 9 is dead. Long Live OS X.

Burning 800Mb CD-Rs on a SuperDrive

2005-01-06 Thread Clark Martin
I just came upon the need to duplicate a 700+ Mb CD-ROM. I looked
around and found that there are indeed 800 Mb CD-Rs. But I also
found reports that they can't be written by some SuperDrives. I have
a new iBook with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825 drive. Does anyone know if
this model can burn 800 Mb disks?

I searched around but could find no definitive answer.
DVD-R isn't an option, the target system doesn't have a DVD drive.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention. Safari 1.2 using 10.3.7
on a WS Series II with 512 MB Ram and ADSL - you can
still get stalls/slowdowns using Yahoo features (mail,
groups).

OSX in its various flavours is a slick marketing tool,
nothing else. This is 'beta-testing' taken to a new
low. They still tweak the install disks to each
machine; but the original 8.0 G3 Beige install disk
has access to installers for both non-G3 Macs and 68k!

There is/was also a way to install 8.6 on
non-supported machines, and a way to install 8.1 on
non-supported macs. Linux/NetBSD is your final hurrah
for 'legacy' HW (see Mandrake PPC, Debian PPC, NetBSD,
AU/X, among others).

Note: this isn't a disparagement of the seller in this case...
Beware these seeming 'amazing deals' on e-bay; this is a favored scam,
offering a really desirable computer system under the pretense, 'I
really need to sell it now', 'a friend got it with the Apple discount',
etc.

Many times they'll want wire transfers only, and there will be other
oddities to the auction.

A slightly used dual 1.8 G5 isn't going to go for a whole lot less than
a new one will.

In short, beware a 'too good to be true' deal. There was a member of
this list (pr maybe it was the Powerbooks list) a few years back who
got burned by one of these deals.

That said, a shiny new G5 *can* be had for $1300, for a new iMac. $1200
if you're a student, teacher, staff at a k-12 or college.

That'll probably be good for as long or longer than your existing Mac,
and if you amortize it out over that long, you'll see it's really very
cheap.

(At least that's the theory; this is a strategy that has yet to work
well with She Who Must Be Obeyed...;-)

Dance through the OS Xs

2005-01-06 Thread Pauline Turtle-Bear Guillermo
I got my PowerBook G3 400 (Pismo) back in August 2000. It was running
9.0.2 then. I have since done the wonderful dance through the OS Xs:
10.0/10.1 (made me cry because I am not a techy at all, NOT ready for
prime time), 10.2 Jaguar (at last a real stable, easy to use OS X!!!)
and then 10.3 Panther (my love only grows - it runs even faster than
Jaguar did!). I have the Tiger disk in the other room (Tiger-prerelease
is installed onto our dual G4 450 Power Mac - we are small developers)
and I may install it on the Pismo after I get back from Macworld Expo
San Fran. OR (more likely) I will FINALLY upgrade my PowerBook. After 4
and a half years, I think I deserve a new computer that can run the
newest OS with lightening speed (Halo, here I come...).

I have a 8600 in the back room in case I want to run OS 8.1, 8.6 or 9.1
or my old but very good SCSI HP scanner. I have a PB 540 in the kitchen
running 7.5.5 nicely as my recipe book.

We all cohabitate quite nicely.

Deleting an App doesn't require a lot of rooting around, all you have
to do is hit Cmd-f, enter the name of the app you want deleted, then
Cmd-delete every file associated with the app on the list. Application

Re: Upgrading Hard Disk + OS 9 and OS X partition anecdote

2005-01-06 Thread Mikael Byström

I make it a point to not install OS 9 drivers. The few apps I use are the
4D 6.8 compiler and Loop app Infinity, which can run under Classic.
Besides those there is nothing I need in OS 9 and I don't want to waste
my time there.

I even turn down support for OS 9 problems as I can't be bothered and OS
X put new demands all the time upon me. But I kinda regret it because the
errors was typically both more common and easier to fix than OS X
problems. For some reason more people were prepared to pay for fixing
them as well. That might have been the stronger economy back then, however.

Anyway if I decide to re-install is there any reason to go to 9.2.2?
I seem to recall doing it so the installer for a Skyline wireless card

I certainly don't think OS9 is dead, it still does everything I want to

PB G4/400 freezes suddenly. Heat? (wasRe: LaCie drive forcesleeps TiBook 400)

2005-01-06 Thread Mikael Byström
It just got Worse!

Three times since this drive encounter my whole machine have frozen 4+
times. It just freeze and there is nothing you can do except the three
finger salute. There is no log of anything in the OS, indicating hardware
failure. I did a Open Firmware set defaults, reset nvram reset all.
This didn't improve anything.

Then I popped up the keyboard and discovered that the connection cable
from the PCMCIA slot had been disconnected from the motherboard. I
reinserted it hoping this would solve matters.

I think it froze four times since, one of them booting into single mode
and stopped just after the first 20 lines.

All of this because I pop in a firewire drive during sleep? Or did it
just cause already broken things to surface? The new thing with the drive
was that it was the first firewire unit I have used that needed bus
power. Maybe this put some toll on the motherboard or something?

Hmm, one thing I seem to notice is that my fan isn't running as far as I
can tell. Maybe it stopped? How do one force start the fan? Will the
Apple hardware test CD, that came with the machine, test the fan? If it
doesn't, then maybe this is a heat problem? Any ideas on how to verify
the fan operation or other ideas to solve this problem?

I tried Temperature Monitor, but unfortunately only the HD SMART
controller is supported on my Powerbook G4 400 and I noticed that when
crashes occur the temp is 43° C/109.2°F after rebooting. The first
troublefree time it's at 39°C to 42°C.

Mikael Byström said earlier:

I couldn't find much in the
system log.
