Does your result allow you to click between the photos of an auction?
Did you go to a current ebay auction that had multiple little
thumbnails (such that if you click on them, they enlarge the photo)?
After you saved it, closed your browser, then open the saved document,
were you able to still click the thumbnails, toggling between the
various little photos to enlarge them?
That is what I was looking for.
No. For that you need something like PageSucker

--
Bruce Johnson
Since PageSucker is $10, and IE with Stanton's steps worked just fine,
I'll stick with that. I'll experiment tomorrow to see if the resulting
IE file can be saved to CD and still work (PageSucker's site says
theirs can).

Thanks,
Claire

It's a Belkin, a couple years old, has three wired ports and wireless,
it's been used with wireless cards in 3 different PCs, my old

had to be reset through the machine that's connected with a cable.

Salut Germain!

Welcome to the list and congratulation on your purchase!

The power management unit and the OS are smart enough that they won't
overcharged the battery. Even if the battery loses its charge, they will
wait before charging it. The reason is that this type of rechargeable
battery, Lithium Ion, is limited in the number of charges it can receive. It
doesn't have any "memory" effect like previous NiCAD or NiMH, but the number
of charges. So, if you want to keep your battery, you shouldn't charge it
too often. Now, if you're using the adapter, like I said, the PMU and the
system should be smart enough not to apply a charge as soon as the capacity
goes down a little bit, so you should be fine.

Green light means that the adapter is powering the iBook. Orange means that,
in addition to provide power to the iBook, it's also charging the battery.

iBook not playing nice on the network!

2005-01-28 Thread Catherine Burnett
I just got a new 12" G4 iBook with Airport Extreme yesterday, was sort
of an upgrade/sidegrade trade-in from my old 12" Powerbook, the
original 867mhz, which also had Airport Extreme.

But it never threw my wired G3 Powermac offline when using the
internet, or while trying to transfer files! If I try and connect to
my G3, it will somehow disconnect it from the router, and I'll have to
reboot my router from the iBook to get it back on! Sometimes it'll
disconnect it quickly, sometimes I'll be able to transfer some files
over. Seems to be worse when the G3 is booted into Panther than in
Jaguar.

Why can't they be friends? I've had computers fight over the available
bandwidth before, but that was before I fixed a setting in the router,
and as soon as one machine would stop transmitting/receiving data, the
other could connect to the internet and do what it needed to do. But
my G3 can't even ping the router, even though it's directly connected
to it, when this happens.

Any idea why, and how I can fix this to get my files transferred?

My first iBook and my fisrt questions

2005-01-28 Thread Germain
Hello to this great list, I found you on the Net searching for good info and
hints on Apple Books.

Last week I bought my very first iBook, the one I always wanted. It's a
graphite Clamshell, 192 ram. I love it. It's in mint condition: no scratch,
no coffee stains, no nothing.

So I don't know a lot about iBooks. My first question would be, of course,
about the battery. The indicator shows it can last 2 hours at full charge. I
can go with that. Since I will use the iBook with the Yo-Yo most of the time
and this adaptor charges the battery, can it damage the battery? Does the
battery kind of cuts itself off when the AC is used? Is removing the battery
when I plug the iBook a good thing to do? And last, what's with the color
codes? Green, orange? I read earlier about an Apple battery test app. Should
I get it? And where? I know, I have a lot of questions for a first but I
dreamed of a Clamshell for five years now,

Thanks a million times

No. This is how it works in Safari, Firefox and IE. It's just that

One difference I find between browsers is that Safari doesn't (as far
as I can see) give the option of also downloading images, etc.

In Mozilla & Camino I have the choice of the web page only (the same

Did you have the main battery in when you plugged it in the iBook?
PSU -> DC board outside iBook (ORANGE)
PSU -> iBook - No battery (GREEN)
PSU -> iBook - Battery (ORANGE) will see if it turns green...
Not sure if it charges the battery as I am reluctant to run down
the battery to see.
I bought it like this knowing it was like this.

Pismo sound too loud

2005-01-28 Thread sacear3
Good day all!

My Pismo, the very same one I am upgrading, seems to have developed a sort of
tick. In the past week, the volume is excessively loud. When it starts up the
chime is shocking, very loud and distorted. I have the volume set at one
segment of the horizontal meter using the keyboard volume controls, which reads
6% in System Prefs. Keeping it at this level setting is plenty loud enough now
for me to hear System Alerts, interface sounds, and iTunes playback. If I
adjust the volume up to even half, it can be heard annoyingly in another room.
I have no idea when exactly this happened or how. I tried the key-combination
resets and the reset button in the back, none have corrected the loud volume.
Has anyone experienced this or heard of this before? Is this a PRAM battery
issue?

BTW, the OS is Panther 10.3.6.

I greatly appreciate any ideas. Thank and have a great day!
(Heavy rain in NorCal! Feels great!)

Scott

The explanation was just fine. If you left any of it out, it wouldn't
have worked.

How does this same process work in Safari? I would much rather work
with Safari.

Re: web page capture

2005-01-28 Thread Claire Hart
This discussion inspired me to try this process to see if its as
troublesome as indicated. It seems fairly easy to me. This might be
because I'm using a superior browser: Opera.
I simply clicked on your link, and when Opera loaded the page I
clicked the save button on the toolbar. (I could have also used the
menu.) One dialog box popped up saying it would save to desktop. I
changed that to documents file and clicked the save button in the box.
That was all there was to it. It's about as difficult at saving a
document in Word or any other program.
To see if it worked, I turned off my internet connection, shut down
Opera (unnecessary step--I just wanted to see if it would open by
itself again), and went and found the file and clicked on it. Opera
opened. The entire page with all the photos appeared. There didn't
seem to be any hitch.
This seems straightforward to me. Do other browsers make this
difficult?
Peter
Does your result allow you to click between the photos of an auction?
Did you go to a current ebay auction that had multiple little
thumbnails (such that if you click on them, they enlarge the photo)?
After you saved it, closed your browser, then open the saved document,
were you able to still click the thumbnails, toggling between the
various little photos to enlarge them?

That is what I was looking for.
I tried three of the methods so far (the free ones) as suggested by
members of the list. All three saved the entire page as it was.
However, none of them allowed me to click between the thumbnail photos
to see an enlarged view. Possibly the more costly solutions would have
provided that result. Then I began to wonder if maybe the auction was
too old, and what I was bringing up was already in my computer tucked
away somewhere.

So, in my last post, I asked if anyone would be able to go to that
auction and confirm if it and its links were still there. Having not
gotten any takers, I found a current auction with linking photos, used
the steps as suggested by Stanton, and this time it worked. So I'm
guessing that my auction I was trying to archive is no longer there.

Incidentally, my son says that IE on his Windows computer allows him to
save this way from the "add page to favorites" option, in case anyone
wanted to know that. On a Mac, as Stanton explained, it goes through
the "save as" dialogues.

Thanks,
Claire

It is not straightforward. There's an installer that worked ok, then
said there were errors and to check the log. Well, if there's a log
file it's well hidden. :-( It was not written to the console log or
system log.

Still, I've not had any problems running a multitude of other Java apps
(including Swing apps, which this uses), I'll dig into it and see what
I can find out. It's entirely possible it's some sort of path error or
something like that.

It may simply be a matter of tracking down which .jar file to run to
start it up.

hard drive options, mk 2

2005-01-28 Thread sacear3
*** hard drive options, mk 2 ***

I thank everyone for reading my email about hard drive options
and for the various responses, that is some interesting info.

I was hoping to get some responses about the pros and cons
of hard drive speed and about the pros and cons of RAM cache
size. Getting info about brands, prices, and installation is nice,
yet it is not what I am looking for nor asking about.

The current drive is the stock IBM 18GB that came with the Pismo four
years ago, with a 4200 rpm speed and a 2MB RAM cache size.

I am comparing the drive speed rpms (4200 v. 5400 v. 7200) and the RAM
cache size, which are as small as 1MB or as big as 16MB.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various speeds?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various cache sizes?

I think for an external drive, faster is better, yet how does the size
of the RAM cache figure into the equation?

For an external drive, is a larger RAM cache actually better or overkill and
wasteful?

Is there a realistic cache size where effective usefulness "tops out" and any
more is just waste?

For an internal drive slower uses less power, yet with a large cache
there is less drive access. So, is there a peak performance
combination?

Does a faster drive access less? And therefor is more effective?

How much more effective is a 2MB cache v. 1MB, and a 4MB cache v.
2MB, etc, on up to 16MB v. 8MB? Is all that RAM actually used and
effective?

I am looking for the fastest *and* most efficient combination.

I appreciate any facts, opinions, tho'ts, or experiences you'd like to
share.
Thank you all and have a great day!

Kevin,

I've had two original Apple batteries for my Pisom since I got it in 2000, both
lasted and performed
great until July when one of them started losing charge faster, so I switched
to the other as the main
battery and about a month ago, it too is losing charge very quickly. I only get
about 90 minutes from
each battery now. Yet, from what I have read around the 'net, these cells
lasted longer than the average.
However to answer your question, they did seem to work find then die suddenly,
rather than gradually.

Strange sounds of the iBook. . .

2005-01-28 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello folks,
Got a new mystery here. . .or not I hope. My roommate has the dual USB
14" iBook; a.k.a., "Son Of Pismo". It's a pretty cool looking laptop
in general design, but he's been having trouble with it. First, I
suggested he replace his AC adapter as soon as possible since the cord
is frayed. The main problem he's having though is a "thumping" from
the hard drive area before boot up. When you press the power button,
you hear this sound for approx. 30 seconds to a minute, then all of a
sudden it boots like there was never a problem. I'm suspecting it's
the drive going bad, any other ideas?
