Lombards have also been known to have problems with their cache (on chip)
memory, which could be why you can't get X to install.

Since 64 MB is to little RAM to install 10.1, 10.2 or 10.3 with, I had

Is there any chance the problem is due to the version of Python installed

Re: help me diagnose The Satanic Lombard please

2005-02-09 Thread Andrew Main
I gather you have a 256MB RAM card; have you tried removing the 64MB
card and putting the 256MB card in the slot the 64MB card was in? I
have a Lombard CPU card which was giving me lots of trouble until I
noticed that one of the contacts in the upper RAM slot was damaged; RAM
in the lower slot works fine, but I can't put anything in the upper
slot.

Lombard CPU cards are known for cache failure (it's happened to me);
the solution is to replace the CPU card, or have the faulty one
repaired. I've had good experience for some years with DTT Service
http://www.dttservice.com/appleportables/powerbookg3.html; you can
send them the whole PBk and they'll diagnose it for free; their repair
prices are least expensive I know.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I have a 256 MB card but it isn't low
profile so it won't fit the lower RAM slot. I've had the 64 and the 128
in the lower slot with the upper one empty or containing RAM up to 256
MB. Nothing get me through the installation process of OS X above
10.0.3.

The type of RAM doesn't seem to matter either: I just tested a 128 MB
PC-100 stick in the lower slot without any success either so it
definitely begins to look like some other problem than RAM: maybe, as
you say, a faulty CPU card (cache?)

Peter.

Why do they do that to the machines? I'm buying a new computer, why
can't I install whatever OS version I like on it? It's not like I'm
trying to install the no longer supported OS 9 or anything. What
difference would it make to them if someone wanted to run Jaguar on
their machine, too?
-

They don't care. As far as they are concerned you can run what ever you
want on your laptop. The problem lies not in your laptop but in Jaguar,
or even Panther 10.3.5. Jaguar just doesn't have the drivers for
your new hardware. Apple would have to go out and release a new version
of Jaguar to support your new laptop. Unlike Windows which is designed
to support everything under the sun (which is one of the main reasons
Windows has so many problems) Mac OS is designed to support, more or
less, only the Apple provided hardware available at the OSes time of
release. They could take the time to make a version of Jaguar that will
run on your iBook but that would take time away from updating 10.3 for
new models, and the development of 10.4, and lets face it Jaguar is 2
years old now.

It's a program in Python, PyDance. It *is* open source. But no one

You may need to install the current Python package from macPython:

Re: Wallstreet Battery

2005-02-09 Thread Kenneth Vann
Just an Update regarding my quest for a working battery:

It would be helpful to others if those being difficult
or providing substandard service or materials are
clearly identified. What dealers did you deal with?

APC was direct from them. I am waiting for return phone call.

APC Returned my phone call, and is sending out a replacement battery. They
are paying the shipping cost both ways.

The other was from Eagle Imports Intl, 2757 So 300 West Suite # D
Salt Lake City, UT 84115. This is the company that has not responded to
my repeat phone calls for a RMA. Will let you know how it goes with the
charge card company refunding the charge.

Eagle Imports returned phone calls after 7 days. Says problems caused by
move from Salt Lake City to Logan UT. Says Quest telephone company has
messed up their local POTS and 800 service and their voice mail service.
Also Quest provides DSL to company and that has been messed up. I was given
a direct phone number to the rep I talked to, so to bypass voice mail.

Eagle Imports agreed to send replacement battery. Will pick up the original
battery that tested dead. Will pay for shipping cost for both batteries. I
am waiting on replacement to test. If replacement battery does not work,
they have agreed to take it back, pay the freight cost, and not charge a
restocking fee. Eagle Imports believes that one or more cells in battery is
dead.

Contacted Other World Computing about their brand of batteries. They advise
the following: The NewerTech batteries are not compatible with VST external
charger. The VST charger's overcharge batteries. While my Wallstreet
charges the Apple Brand of battery, the charge card could be weak and not
work with a battery of larger capacity. Other World says the NewerTech line
of battery has a low rate of return, most all problems being with a
defective charger in the PowerBook or the use of an external charger. Other
World answered emails promptly.

Testing to be done: Will take the two problem batteries to user group
meeting this thursday. One other member has Wallstreet and I will test
batteries in his PowerBook. Will advise what happens.

I want to get my Wallstreet working reliably. I will use it in a dirty work
enviroment, and don't want to use a new PowerBook in such enviroment. I
currently use a PB1400 daily at work, (it has no problems) but I would like
to go to a larger screen.

Is their any way to test the charge card in the Wallstreet other than
replacing it with a new one?

By the way. The AC power supply for the Wallstreet is a new one of the YoYo
style. No problems with that.

Thanks for all the suggestions I have received from you.

Re: help me diagnose The Satanic Lombard please

2005-02-09 Thread Dan K
As mentioned, CPU L2 cache failure is apparently common on the Lombard
series, and leads to all sorts of odd problems.

My question is - has anyone used third party cache control software to
disable a faulty cache, and did that work to get rid of the errors?

Yes, I know having no L2 cache isn't the hot tip for a speedy 'Book, but
the alternative is worse. Also noted, the OP was trying to install an OS
from CD, so if the L2 is kaput 3rd party solutions wouldn't work in this
case.

dead HD

2005-02-09 Thread caribsea
My 60GB not very old HD started whirring this morning and, bottom line, the
computer no longer
recognizes it. TechTool doesn't see it, either. I've been trying everything,
and once or twice it opened
up on restart and I was able to drag some files to a Compact Flash card, but
when I tried to burn files
to CD, halfway through it started grinding and stopped burning.

Is there anything I can try? I had backed up crucial files a few days ago, but
there's a lot of stuff on
there I want.

Or can anyone recommend a retrieval company and how much does it cost?

Thanks,

Or can anyone recommend a retrieval company and how much does it cost?
I have practical experience with OnTrack Data Systems out of Minnesota.
I'll start with if you have to ask how much, you probably can't afford
it. For 5GB of data recovered from a server hard drive, I paid about 6
grand, including diagnostic fee, and DVDs with my data on it. This was
critical data for a business, so price was pretty much no object. That
price was for expedited service.

Hope this helps.

Hi All, some may have heard this story from other lists but now,
after having used fixed almost every mac ever produced before 1999,
I've met one I can't diagnose! Hoping someone here can help.

We bought a Lombard 400/DVD/256/6 off ebay.. . . .

Does the sound card work under any of the working systems?
My wallstreet stopped making sound and at this point wouldn't boot to OS9.2,
but would boot to 8.6. Replacing sound card was my answer. Good luck.

spamAnd to all on the G-mail list: PC 100 SoDimm, 512 meg, In wallstreet
shows 256 meg, 2 inch profile. Anyone with pismo may be able to ustilize it?
I don't need and am accepting silly offers to a good home. Thanks/Spam

Theres a good chance that it's a bad board on the drive.
I've had great luck buying identical drives with known
good circuit boards, and swapping the boards on the drives.
Have done this 3 times now for friends with great success.
Might be the next step if none of the software solutions work.
Even if it doesn't work your only out a small amount and
you would still have a working drive by putting the second
one back together. That is if theres nothing in the original drives
mechanism that caused the failure in the first place. But thats unlikely.

Try putting the dying hard drive into a zip-lock bag, sealing it and storing
it in your freezer over night. Tomorrow remove it let it warm up. You
should get an hour or more out of it so you can transfer the files to your
new already installed drive.

When I first tried this on Panther, even the Python apps that come with

You should get on the MacPython mailing list, they'll probably be able
to help you. What it sounds like is your system is confused about
libraries and suchlike...alas, this has been common with Python.

However they're used to dealing with this on the mailing list.

Satanic Lombard update

2005-02-09 Thread The Real Seed Catalogue
I just bought a replacement MOBO CPU. I will swap and report back.
I really want to get to the bottom of this.

May have a MOBO for sale then . . .
Ben
PS: I hadn't though about different flavours of X being the problem.
Someone lent me 10.3 so that was what I tried.

Anyone on list willing to lend me a copy of an earlier version to
explore further? I don't have a CD burner so it would be a loan
situation . .

Dan, that would be a great suggestion, if just from a diagnosis point

Any pointers to a name/source? - OS9 app , for obvious reasons. If
you can point me to the SW, I will try under 9.1 9.2 and report back.

As mentioned, CPU L2 cache failure is apparently common on the Lombard
series, and leads to all sorts of odd problems.
My question is - has anyone used third party cache control software to
disable a faulty cache, and did that work to get rid of the errors?

Re: LG/Mat DVD Swap Help Needed

2005-02-09 Thread Dan K
Mike K [EMAIL PROTECTED] asked:
I have just scored a Mat. drive to replace the POS LG unit in this
Pismo...It is the bare drive ...What I need help with is how to get the
face plate /bezel and case off the LG so I can put the Mat in and place
the bezel on...The new Mat unit should fit into the LG case and be able
to use the LG face plate Right???
Yes, and no.

Yes, the Matsushita mechanism will fit just fine into the LG's drive
sled, all such sleds are identical.

No, the LG uses a different face than does the Matshita mechanism. You'll
have to source an original Apple-Matshita face or use the generic face
that came with your 'new' drive.

On my page on such things:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/ebms.html#pismo

If your 'new' drive is an original Apple mechanism, it will have a
Master/Slave/CableSelect switch on it, ensure it is set to Master. If it
is not an Apple drive it may be pre-set to any of those three. If not
hard set as Master you probably won't be able to boot from a CD by
holding the C key on startup. However, you should be able to boot from
CD by pressing the option key on startup, where (if the CD is in the
drive) you can choose from which device to boot.

Quicken 2005 for Mac in Canada

2005-02-09 Thread Amber R.
I would like to buy the most recent version of Quicken but it seems
that in Canada, we can only get the 2004 version for Mac.

However, I don't really need to import my banking data as I can input
it myself. I was more interested in the budgeting and iphoto import
features of 2005 for Mac.

I am wondering if anybody here has the American version and what you
think of it ?
Besides the tax and banking stuff, do you foresee any other problems
if I were to buy the newer 2005 version ?

Safari lagging fixed!

2005-02-09 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Well, I managed to get the lagging issue in Safari fixed. But it's not
what I did, it's what Apple did. I just downloaded and installed the
newest update; 10.3.8. In .8 all program lagging is gone! My whole
system seems to be running a bit faster. Not sure what they did, but
it works. Thanks for all the input though, for what it's worth.

Its for real. This trick supposedly goes back to the old days when 1-2 gig
drives were hundreds of dollars. I've heard about it from several sources on
different Mac related digests. Some people replied it worked for them. I
would suspect that the freezing tightens tolerances in the bearings. They'll
stay colder than the outside until the drive heats up. Hopefully lasting
until you can transfer your data.

usually leave it in the freezer for an hour or two initially and then

Re: LG/Mat DVD Swap Help Needed

2005-02-09 Thread Tom Ethen
When I did mine, I just left the PC face on the drive because it was too
much of a project to switch them and the PC face really didn't fit all that
bad.

Re: dead had in freezer?

really? thats the most bizarre fix i've ever come across, if you're
being serious.
what's the basic explanation for that one? *intrrigued*
I mean i understand the #1 reason for HD failure is heat, but
intuitively i would think it would wreak havoc with the parts to put it
in the freezer. But if this is really a fix, i could see the ziplock
bag being necessary- no one wants freezer burned data! ( =

While we're on the truth is stranger than fiction theme. Putting a
H.D. in a kitchen oven for a few minutes can also solve some
problems; at least temporarily. In days gone by, in some drives, the
lubrication on the platters and/or on the spindle would harden and
instead of lubricating the drive's components, it caused them to
stick together and kept things from spinning. That was known as
stiction. Baking the drive at a low heat caused the lubrication to
soften and reflow, allowing the drive to spin up again.

I don't believe that newer drives have the same stiction problem.

Never know what you'll learn on a Mac list, huh? :-)
