How much for Pismo G3/900MHz 1Gb RAM?
Hi Folks, The DVD/CDRW drive on my G3 Pismo laptop broke over the weekend, and after thinking about it I have decided that I don't actually *need* a laptop, and it might be better for me to get a Mac mini, rather than get the drive fixed. I was thinking of selling the G3 Pismo and put the funds towards the Mac Mini, but before I put the thing on eBay, I was wondering how much I should expect for it. The machine itself is in great condition, with no scratches on the screen or the case, it has a BlueChip G3/900MHz upgrade CPU, 1Gb RAM, AirPort. The only things that are up with it are the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore, and the DVD/CDRW drive is broken. It has its original box and all the original wires and adaptors, and it comes with a nice new laptop bag, and a 4Gb external USB hard disk. What sort of money should I be expecting for this? I am in the UK, if that makes a difference! Thanks in advance! -- Thanks, Andrew McCall [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.
The expense is not going to be that high, since Apple can mass produce. As I said before, I'd pay extra just to have a BTO for the features I need. What would be nice is dual expansion bays and ports on the back. Not asking for too much, is it? With today's technology, third party companies would have a field day with expansion bays being available on new PowerBooks. For the most part, in my opinion, a BTO means build to order. What is actually happening though, is not BTO. It's like buying a car with or without a stereo. Nothing is changed, just simply added or subtracted. If I want a BTO, then I want a BTO. . .know what I mean? But your BTO requires redesigning the whole computer from ground up: there's no place for expansion bays, nor there is for back ports with current hinge design. It's not as simple as adding Bluetooth or AirPort Extreme. I'd love to see a good dock (possibly integrated with a stand), and two USB ports on each side. But I will give Apple the benefit of the doubt and presume this is much more difficult to engineer than me or others can think... let alone offering computers with vastly different characteristics, as you propose. Besides, I'm not sure anyone wants the return of the Sculley era with gazillions of models hard to tell apart. Re: watermarking groups of photos at same time?
Does anyone know of a MAC supported software that will do watermarking on batches of photos at the same time? All I can find is PC softwares :-( I know photoshop can do this, but that is one photo at a time. I have hundreds of photos that I need to do this to. Please respond off list. Thanks in advance! Kim :-) Graphic converter? It can batch process files but I'm not sure if this is one of the processes. John Yes, I think Graphic Converter can do that rather nicely. Use Convert and Modify to apply a number of effects to a bunch of images at the same time. For this, you'd want to checkmark Use batches and the edit the batches to contain Insert PICT. Parametrize as you wish it and there you go. My little experiment with that worked almost perfectly, placing a test watermark in a few pictures. Only thing is the transparency seems to be reversed (so I had to invert the alpha channel of the watermark for it to work correctly in the batch). Re: Wallstreet not behaving
You lift the keyboard and right in front of you there is a ribbon cable that I believe is something to do with power management (although I could be wrong). It's approximately where the space bar is located when the keyboard is in place and it's orange in colour. On occasion it looked like it was in place but it had become unseated slightly, I pressed it firmly back in place and all was good. Adi On 13 Feb 2005, at 01:35, Hector I. another iBook problem
The other day I had some interesting things happen. I shut down my iBook, and sat as it took longer than normal to power down. I let it sit, came back to it a few minutes later to a black screen, so it looked to be shut down as best as I could tell. Closed the lid, and set it aside for the night, but after the lights were out I noticed a fading and brightening effect. Thinking this couldn't possibly be the iBook, since I shut it down, not put it to sleep, I took a closer look, opened the lid, and nothing, although the sleep light had been on for some reason. After closing the lid again the fading light didn't come back. The next morning I woke up, tried to turn on the iBook, and it did not respond. More curious, the bottom of the book was very warm, warmer that it usually gets when even sitting on my lap. I removed the battery and the power chord, plugged the battery battery back in again, and it powered back on with no problems. I have had no other problems since then. Is this indicative of a greater problem? Possibly a well known problem? Am I going to have to send my iBook in to be repaired AGAIN? I would close it up and it didn't go to sleep. I'd go to open it again and it would be hot. The screen would be lit but I couldn't do anything. I'd either have to restart it with the three finger salute or pop the battery and power cord. It gets hot because with the top closed it can't vent the heat as well. I don't know what caused it. Too bad it was in a PDA that was overpriced, and oversized to compete with Palm. Still, tablet PC's are largely a solution without a problem, except for some narrow vertical markets. Apple doesn't do that much, if at all anymore. They'll come up with solutions to problems you may not know you had, (a la the iPod) but they don't do SWOPs any more. Re: another iBook problem
(I was the one who started that applecare thread that got shut down- the guy with the iBook that took 24 days to repair). TIA, Brian Brian, I have had something similar happen. It seems to be that the shutdown gets interrupted by the sleep so it is neither truly shut down nor asleep. It seems that the HD can keeping running if this happens and that may be the heat source. Re: OT:Gmail and Mail (and back on topic again)
Thanks to Jason, Timothy, Jan and Marcin and others for the input and instructions. I am set up and all seems to be working well with Mail. I set Gmail to archive after getting it with Mail so everything is saved in 2 places. After a couple of years with Mail I tried to back up my old mail and wouldn't you know it, the ONE older email I really need now is nowhere to be found. It will be nice to save everything. Sometimes my OCD desires to save space backfires. Once again, thank you to this great list. We now return you to your regularly scheduled on topic discussions: Using 10.3.8 and everything going smoothly. For those with Pismos who lose their ability to read CD's or DVD's, do you have the LG module? I replaced mine through Wegener Media and have had no problems since. Plays and starts up with everything without missing a beat. By the way, I have an extra module. If anyone is interested let me know. Would be willing to test it in mine, and if it is in good working condition, sell it for a reasonable price. It is strictly a replacement. CD/DVD player but fits the faceplate perfectly. Re: another iBook problem
I've had a problem with my iBook that causes the display to go blank as it comes back from display sleep or the screensaver (sometimes with games as well). It appears to be shut down, but it still responds to keyboard commands, etc. So, while you were waiting for it to shut down, the display could have gone to sleep, causing you to think that it had in fact shut down. As it wasn't really shut down, just in the buggy display-sleep mode, closing the lid would put it into system sleep, which causes the light to pulsate. The fact that it didn't wake up again could mean that it was close enough to shutting down that the GUI was missing, or any number of other things. At any rate, bizarre sleep behaviour is something I've just learned to put up with -- during normal system operation, if the screen blanks, you can just close the lid, wait for system sleep, and wake it up again. The issue seems to be fairly common, I'm not sure if there's a solution to it yet. Cheers, Ben On 15 Feb 2005, at 08:31, Jeff Wiseman wrote: The other day I had some interesting things happen. I know I can research the answer on this, but I betcha one of you knows the answer right of the top of your head. The wife got a new iBook, G4, 14' screen in late 2004. My Dual-USB, G3, 12 iBook was purchased in early 2003. New PowerBooks
Well, I've had the new 1.5GHz 12 for a week now, and must say that the upgrade was really worthwhile. The computer is noticeably faster (50% speed boost), but that is to be expected. What makes this a worthwhile upgrade are the little changes. Haivng a 5400RPM hard drive is a big improvement (I did the same upgrade to my Rev B last year), and the new two-finger scrolling is fabulous. What I like most, however, is the keyboard. WHen I first bought it I mentioned that the keyboard has a different feel and that I made more typos. As predicted, it took me about three or four days to get used to it, and my typos have decreased to about my usual number. What has really benefitted though is my speed. The action of the new keys really is better, with a nice spring in them that makes it easy to move on to the next one and know whether or not the key registered. It actually reminds me of the positive action of the old Apple Extended Keyboard 2 (the USS Nimitz), not that it feels the same, but that it is equally positive and like the aircraft carrier, has a nice, soft key sound as well. So, there it is. Of course it still has all of the compromises that the 12 PowerBook always had, though that's why Apple offers three sizes. I seriously considered moving up to the 15 this time, but I already own a large laptop with an excellent keyboard for when I need one, and this machine is meant for travelling. Re: Battery Chargers
As far as I know, both adapters are 24V, 45W types, which means they're interchangeable. Check the specifications printed on each of them just to be sure. Earlier yo-yo adapters used a different-sized plug, but I think the dual-USB iBooks use the current connector. There's also a G4 550 MHz upgrade offered by XLR8/Daystar (and perhaps others). http://www.xlr8.com/. On the basis of theoretical performance, I'd go with the 900 MHz G3. The extra 400 MHz will trump even most altivec-intensive applications. So far as I know, PowerLogix is the only company doing the G3 900 MHz upgrade, and if you go through the CPU Upgrade database at XLR8YOURMAC http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/, there are more than a few very negative reviews. There are also some positive reviews, so perhaps it was just a bad batch of chips or something. If you're thinking of buying an already-upgraded Pismo, then that's probably less of an issue. Beyond that, the Pismo is getting pretty long in the tooth. You might be better off saving your money for a new PowerBook or iBook. I love my Pismo and I use it every day. However, I don't think I could justify spending much money upgrading a 4.5 year old computer. Buying an already-upgraded one might make a bit more sense but it really depends on your situation. -Jeff[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- You can't brew a premium lager with a Kool-aid mentality. --Harold Green in _The_Red_Green_Show_ -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Incomplete or Damaged Applications on PowerBook Pismo
Hi Folks I'm wondering if this happened to anybody else ... sorry for the length ... I have a Pismo: PowerBook (Firewire) G3/400Mhz/40GB/512MB, which I recently updated to OSX 10.3.8 with no (obvious) problems. This morning I was installing and testing some 3rd party utilities, e.g. Butler (4.0b21), SafariMenu (2.2.4) and Slim Battery Monitor (1.2). They all exist as applications (either in Applications or Utilities) but possibly do some further installing of preferences (etc ...?) which may impact on the Library files (System, Local, User) and who knows where else. I've heard of rogue installers that hose other permissions when doing their install so maybe that is relevant to what followed. I believe I only had Slim Battery Monitor running (more space on the menu bar for other meters etc) as Butler seemed almost too complex and SafariMenu didn't seem to offer me much utility. I tried to open the Preview.app but a system dialog appeared noting that You can not open the application Preview because it may be damaged or incomplete. This also occured for many (not all) other Apple applications such as Safari.app, Mail.app, System Preferences.app, Terminal.app, ... and a host of others (but not TextEdit.app, Disk Utility.app or Activity Monitor.app ...). Didn't seem to affect any of the 3rd party applications such as Word.app. Kind of freaked me out somewhat, though I had a backup of the Pismo it was dated 26 January 2005. Still, usage of Finder was OK for backing up recent files. Things I tried: 0) Turning off Slim Battery Monitor ... 1) Rebooting ... no effect 2) Repairing Permissions ... no effect 3) Checking if the problem existed for other users ... it did 4) Verifying 10.3.8 System Disk Partition from my 10.2.8 System Disk Partition. (Disk Utility didn't report any problems) 5) After some paranoid backing up of files (e.g. Mail files) onto another disk, I rebooted back into the 10.3.8 system disk. Now Terminal and Safari and Preview all work fine again. So somehow the repairing permission and/or the system checkup on rebooting helped fix the problem. So I guess it is unrelated to 10.3.8. Anybody have any similar experiences, or comments or suggestions? I've heard it is wise to do repair permissions after installing software in case important permissions got hosed. Re: dead had in freezer?
I've used the freezer method when a drives directory has gotten corrupt and I can't see the drive and I get the message that it can't be recognized and needs to be formatted. I freeze the drive overnite, usually its recognized when I plug it in, run diskdoctor and then diskwarrior and I'm good to go. And I have used those drives for years. But I don't want anyone to think that if there drive is clacking or bad then you should continue to use it. In the past when this has happened to me, someone has disconnected the drive before the tower was off so it corrupted the drive directory. And knowing I have tons of files on it, I had to rescue it. So the freezing is a very viable option, at least for me numerous times. Knock on wood. Linda -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... No, there's nothing but wires inside the cord. The device itself is a switchmode power supply (SMPS), and as such has built-in over-current and over-temperature protection. No fuses required.
