That's sort my feelings too as the line has been what seems seriously

Rev A on the 12 powerbook had serious heat issues and bottom cases that
warped,
making the machine wobble on a flat surface. SOme did it, some didn't, but
the
problem is much reduced on the Rev B, which also runs much cooler.
Could this apply to the rev.B (?) 1GHz 12 ?
I bought one second hand, the one with the dent that we were
discussing, and yes the cows did come home...
It was warped where it would weigh on a flat surface.
I just put it on two high point where it was lowest and pressed
hard down, straightened it out a treat!! :o)

But what do you get with a 14 display with a 1600x1200 res other than the
right to say mine is bigger than yours? Do you actually get more usable
screen real estate or do you just wind up setting word to 150% magnification
so you can read the text, which of course puts you back to square one?

The PC notebook that was dumped on my desk last spring has specs that make
it seem much better than an iBook or PowerBook but it fails the usability
test. PC manufactures are still stuck in the bigger faster = better mode.
Add more features and it is better. Like Creative and all the other mp3
player goons they don't understand the whole thing is a package and less can
actually be more.

formerly dead HD and backup software

2005-02-16 Thread w miller
Thanks to those who advised me on the hard drive in my Lombard I
thought was dead. The data retrieval guy told me he could detect the
drive and sent it back. I put it in a different Lombard and there it
was!
I've now bought a 120GB external drive for nightly backups and would
like advice on the best backup software. Is Apple's Backup suitable for
scheduling external backups? One of the things this disaster did was
force me to start working in Panther, so now I have files in OS X and
OS 9.2.2. I'm using my Pismo now.

Re: Slow iBook G4 1Ghz

2005-02-16 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
I have a huge PowerBooks collection: at least all form factor (1xx,
190, 520/540, 5300, 1400, 3400/3500, WS/lomb/Pizmo, Titan, Alum,
iBooks (clamsh., withe).

Well, I would like to bring my experience to this topic.
Wallstreet 15, BlueChip 500 MHz, 512 MB RAM
vs.
iBook G4 14, 933 MHz 384 MB RAM
vs.
PowerBook G4 15, 1,25 MHz, 1000 MB RAM
Well, to tell the truth the Aluminium is faster, but I notice this
only with processor and RAM demanding tasks.

In general use it is hard to find any difference: for instance my
wife cannot tell any difference and actually she is still complaining
for the purchase of the Aluminum (the only reason that she admits is
the nice shape and the necessity for my collection...).

Moreover she still find the Wallstreet with OS 9.2.2 the best thing.
Personally I use the iBook G4 90% of the time because it is sturdy
and the battery last longer than on the Aluminium. Only when I need
to work on huge (5 MB) Word files or PDFs I switch to the Aluminium.

Then I have a G5 2 x 2 with 2.5 GB RAM: well this monster is really
faster than the three 'Book mentioned.

Let's go back to 1995-1996: PowerBook 1400/3400 were a big
improvement over the 5300ce, but by today's standard they are pretty
the same thing.

I guess that after you have driven a Porsche (never had one...)
probably you do not notice any difference between a 1999 1.5 L Jetta
or a 2005 Passat V8.

Ben

I too would really like to know about this. I recently acquired a
G4 800mhz iBook and immediately upgraded it to a gig of RAM and I
swear that it is slower at most tasks than my 400mhz Pismo, also
with a gig of RAM. I really expected a big difference in speed and
I just haven't seen it. Any ideas??

2005-02-16 Thread Dan K
Glad the CPU replacement cured the ills, yet another point on the
now-extensive Lombard-CPU-failure chart.

And how about a Superdrive? For some infos about replacing drives in
optical EBMs, see my pages:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/PB_99_2K_EBM_sled.html
 and
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/ebms.html#pismo_upgrades

I've got a couple of mobile DVD-R/W drives, a UJ811 in a Pismo/Lombard
sled and a Teac in a 700 iBook. You can use most any slim drive in an EBM
sled, so start with the xlr8yourmac.com drive database and then go
shopping.

I must say however, any G3 PowerBook is gonna be a tad underpowered for
encoding video DVDs, but will work fine for burning data DVDs. Whaddya
wanna do with this here DVD burner?

could happen. That said, I've NEVER seen this warning from Google.

Another possibility is that the machine that USED to have your address

But again, I've NEVER seen nor heard of this warning from Google,

It seems to be producing this in response to inurl searches.

You want to look at bloat, look closely at Dell (not just consumer but
consumer, small business, and enterprise) or even better yet HP. HP has
dozens of different models. In fact, bloat at HP is so bad you can find one
basic computer model with more than 10 different variations sporting
different software packs, hard drive and optical variations, and even what
retailer sells the bloody thing.

Compared to this, Apple's offerings are quite narrow.

Windows based systems I would check them for viruses and spyware.
The one Windows machine I do have but rarely use has a recently updated
antivirus program, and three different anti-spyware programs, all of
which have been run recently. It's usually not connected.

The issues seem to also happen when only one machine is connected to
the internet. I've used both DSL modems I have with the Windows
machine I used to use, and even in IE on Windows I get a *lot* of
Cannot find server pages, etc...IE on Mac is *much* better behaved.

If you don't know about the Performa Years then the current situation

Apple offers two model lines: 2 ibooks that use many common components,
and three powerbooks, which also use many common components.

IBM has four product lines in the think pad series, offering a bunch of
different configurations in each, although each model uses common
components.

Dell offers 4 'Inspiron' laptops, all different styles, 4 Latitude

Apple has a simpler model line than any other major manufacturer out

But what do you get with a 14 display with a 1600x1200 res other than
the
right to say mine is bigger than yours? Do you actually get more usable
screen real estate or do you just wind up setting word to 150%
magnification
so you can read the text, which of course puts you back to square one?

I use my 15 1600x1200 laptop on a daily basis, with no magnification.
It is perfectly usable to be and the 5 other people at the office with
the same laptop. At the same time we constantly get asked how we can
see our screens... but the people asking are also the ones who run their
19 LCDs at 800x600 and complain about wanting a bigger screen.

The extra screen space is just so useful.

Hi Andrew,
I agree the 17 would be more difficult to use on a plane and certainly
not as portable.
I have never had problems using the 15 on a plane. The pull out
trays are just the right size for it and It was clearly designed for
portability as well. I find the small 12 screen causes too much eye
strain, especially on a plane where the ride is not always smooth in
the first place.

I think there is a strong argument for personal preference here. I
regularly walk around with my 15 PB locally and don't find it
problematic at all. It is fairly easy to conceal not that heavy,
although I wouldn't want to be walking for miles with it on my
shoulder.

This is the only computer I own. I thought I would need to get a
monitor almost immediately but when I received my PB, the screen just
seemed so big. A year later, I still don't have an external monitor
but I do plan to get one shortly as I am doing more intensive photo
restoration projects now and really need a 19-20 external monitor.

All depends on the work you do and the quality of your eyes.

Its the same issue with my 12 PowerBook. I zoom my word docs to 140% and
usually magnify web pages, but I still wouldn't trade it for 800X600 which
would have a similar effect, but force me to use horizontal scrolling on
most websites.

High resolution screens don't give much benefit for working in Word or on
the web, but for graphics or movies they really are nice.

I don't think this is completely true - I very rarely see the 12 PB's

The 15 is well suited to travel and really is not that much heavier.

The backlighting is definitely a great feature for those who don't

Although I do type proficiently, I got it anyway as I figured it could

From: Beniamino Cenci Goga [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In general use it is hard to find any difference: for instance my wife
cannot tell any difference and ...
Hmm, not much of an argument...
I have a really bad habit of swapping my Macs, as some of you know,
and my wife is getting real pissed off with not knowing which Mac or
back-up disk has which document and so on, hence I am moving to
Macs that I will not sell, brand new ones.
To the point, I asked her what she would lika as her Mac and she
claims that she really doesn't care as long as it works and that it stays.
Oh, and as she's got taste (She's married to me...) she prefers OS X
over OS 9 or Windoze.
Right, in the past she's had a 12 iBook 800 who's screen (I do refer
to Macs as persons) was too small, fine. However, when I had the
AlBook 12 a month later, she picked it up and said is this my new
Mac then ?!
Doh!!
It's now be a Mac mini with 17 TFT, period!!

Re: Safari/Camino/non-IE browser problems?

2005-02-16 Thread Pete Gregory
I also have a lot of DNS issues even in IE, for a while half the sites=20
I want to visit it'll say it can't find the server, and I just have to=20
wait nutil it goes away...
It could be an issue with a proxy server or your ISP's DNS. Two or
three things possibilities to check:

1. Try using a different DNS - there are public DNS's out there.
for each site you have issues with, try checking their ip address first
e.g. (from terminal) dig www.apple.com
ask your isp for a list of their dns servers and try
dig [EMAIL PROTECTED] to check them out
you can also try dig www.apple.com +trace
to see where the issues may lie.

2. try going through a proxy server such as proxify.com Assuming you
can connect to the proxy, you can then determine if the issue is your
end or their end.

if you have reliable access to somebody around (e.g. a work machine that
no one minds your using), see if you can use that as a proxy. EG I run
'squid' on a spare linux box at home so by using a ssh tunnel through,
it can act as a proxy server from outside.

3. Check on the reliability of your link by running (from terminal)
ping -c 100 -q www.mit.edu
(I picked on mit because they reply to traceroute pings - apple doesn't)
After a while you should get a summary such as
PING www.mit.edu (18.7.22.83): 56 data bytes
--- www.mit.edu ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 100 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 13.616/15.786/28.997 ms
If you see a lot of packets are dropped or severe latency, try
traceroute -q 8 !$
and see where the failures occur. This MAY show up a duff router etc
that your isp has. depending on your route, though some routers may
not reply to the ping so if it returns * * * * * * * * and later on
shows replies, you know it's not a problem.

Send me an email direct if you want more - I've probably bored the rest
of the list to death by now.

Strongly disagree!
Well, if you like me want to see the bigger picture while working

I write manuals in Word on my 15 AlBook and it's just enough
where I can see WHAT I'm writing/inserting while also seeing
the actualy page layout.
I'd go mad on a 1024x768 screen.

ones are designed to be used at least on a table, if not a desk.

Of course you can use the 17 on an airplane, but it wasn't designed for
that. The 17 is the one least likely to need a lighted keyboard (they put
it there for the wow-factor), while the 12 is the one that would most
benefit (though they left it off to make people want to spend more).

Hard Drive upgrade choices

2005-02-16 Thread Tim Collier
Dear Listers:

I bought this G4 iBook 1.2 gig about 3 months ago. I love it! It gets a LOT
of use and it seems to be my primary Mac. The only thing I don't love about it
is that it only has a 30 gig hard drive. Mind you, I currently have 21.02 gig
free but a 30 gig hard drive just seem sort of 'small'. If I were to invest in
a bigger hard drive, how hard would it be to upgrade it myself (I've done a lot
of work on PCs in the pastname it, I did it and I've installed RAM and
switched out hard drives on G4 towers).
Is the iBook a bit too compact to go doing this myself? I don't want to kill
it! And, if it's not too difficult, what is a good choice for a replacement?
Lastly, if I needed to have it done at my local Apple storeabout how much
$$ am I looking at?

Thanks,

Tim Collier

Personally, I think it comes down to two things: The need for VRAM and
how much you have invested in Expansion Bay devices. Both of these
factors are usually the make/break upgrade decision when it comes to
moving up from Pismo. The VRAM is the only thing in a Pismo that can't
be upgraded. And once you upgrade, the Expansion Bay Devices have to
stay with Pismo. Plus, yea you can put a G4 into a Pismo, but only up
to 550Mhz for $289.00. Now for me, I bought my Pismo new. . .for
$3,200 and right now there is no need for more than 8Meg VRAM. This
came with lots of extras, but still. . .when my friends bitch at how
expensive Macs are I just tell 'em how much I paid for my PowerBook and
compare that expense with the new ones. If anything, the newer Macs
have gone down by over 50% in the past few years. Another example
(sigh) is my old PowerMac 9500. I paid over $4,500.00 for the damn
thing and now not only can you get a G5 tower for that, but also a 20
flat panel Apple monitor. . .with change to spare! Ok. . .now I'm
depressed. :(

This is PBFixit's page on iBooks, it only goes up to the 900 Mhz model,
but I think the gist of it is the same.

According to this http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/nov03/111003.html
report on xlr8yourmac you don't have to remove the lower shell anymore
to get to the hard drive. It is still a long and tedious process. You
will have around 40 screws to remove and you will need to label them as
to where they go back in. One list member a while back recommend using
color markers to mark the screws and holes they go in, using 1 color for
each screw type.

Re: Hard Drive upgrade choices

2005-02-16 Thread Nancy Lawrence
FWIW, I've upgraded (twice) with Travelstar 7200rpm drives, a 40gb and
a 60gb, and I've never had any problems with heat or noise. I haven't
put them in an iBook, though, so I don't how that would go.

Is the iBook a bit too compact to go doing this myself? I don't want

Bluetooth Mice/Trackball Options. . .

2005-02-16 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello all,
I've been shopping around online for a Bluetooth mouse/trackball
option, as my capable USB Logitech three button mouse is driving me
crazy with the cord always gettin' in the way. I've been looking
around, and so far the two contenders are:

Bluetake Optical BT500 three button mouse ($46.95)
and
The Ball -- the only Bluetooth trackball available by DVForge.
($89.99)

Anyone use either of these products? What are the opinions of these
two? Apple's Bluetooth mouse is not part of my search, due to the need
for a three button mouse/trackball. Also, for those who use either
these or other Bluetooth mice I need know which is best for battery
life, etc. I already have Bluetooth USB adapter for my Pismo and use
several Bluetooth devices, except; which seems ironic, a mouse.

Thanks for any info. . .

SuperDrive Dilemma

2005-02-16 Thread Timothy Luoma
I'm trying to decide between
MCE Lucid-M8X 8x DVD±R/RW + 2.4x Double Layer Portable FireWire Drive
http://www.mcetech.com/lucidm8x.html
$279
and
MCE 8X SuperDrive Upgrade for PowerBook G4 with Double Layer Support
http://www.mcetech.com/pbg4dvdr8dl.html
$249
Obviously the portable Firewire one could be used with other computers
(I don't have another one that I'd use it with currently, but you never
know when another computer will show up ;-) But it's external, another
thing to carry around, etc.

The internal drive is easier to deal with. Basically that's the only
advantage that I can see. It's a little cheaper, but then there's
postage (to send it to MCE) or a service charge (if I find a local
reseller who can install it). Assuming that I can find somewhere to
install it, I assume they'd charge at least $30 to install it, and if I
have to send it to MCE I'm going to be w/o my computer for a few days.
So the price is a wash to me.

I'm leaning towards the external. It's not very big, if anything goes
wrong with it, it can be sent off for repair/replacement without
leaving me w/o the use of my Powerbook, I can use it w/ other
computers, no concerns about excess heat, and if I do go somewhere w/o
it and need to burn a DVD-R, I still can do that.

Anyone have other thoughts, esp. why I ought to consider the internal?
Anyone else have one of these drives?

advantage that I can see.
IIRC, you're putting this in a Lombard, right? If so I think you'll get
tired of waiting for a DVD to master with the G3, and don't even
consider doing movies. In fact iDVD won't load on less than a 733mhz G4
now. So that means the external drive, but you'll also have to get a
Firewire card for the Lombard.

Andrew,
I was asking about your experience with the G3 900 upgrade

External drive options for Lombard?

2005-02-16 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Hello all
I've got to reload the OS on my daughter's powerbook and I need a place
to put the data she wants to keep.
I've got an old external SCSI drive but it's only 1 Gb and I need at
least 3Gb.
If I could come up with a 4 Gb or better desktop size SCSI drive I could
put it in the old case and get to work.
Does anyone sell small SCSI drives anymore or am I going to have to
strip the drive out of an old Beige?
I'm also thinking about getting an external USB enclosure and putting an
IDE drive into it, can anyone recommend a brand that works with OS 9?

Thanks

Nope. Sorry, I guess I should have said. This is for a 1.5Ghz P4 w/
1Gb RAM.

I'm actually looking at getting an *internal* drive and putting it in
an external enclosure. Will be a lot cheaper than either of those
drives and a lot faster too.

Cheaper and faster, but not anywhere near as slick.

Re: Bluetooth Mice/Trackball Options. . .

I've been looking for a Bluetooth trackball, but the only one available

Battery life... the keyboard is on like it's 2nd set of 4AA batteries
in almost a year.

The mouse has a charger that I just pop it into each night. DON'T get
a mouse that can't charge the batteries in the mouse, is my suggestion.

The mouse has recently started acting up a little, but I don't know how
long any of them last. I might just need to replace the rechargeable
batteries.

I actually would love an ergonomic bluetooth keyboard with a trackpad
in the center (integrated mouse), but I haven't seen anything like
that.

BTW I got an iCurve when I got the keyboard and love love love it more
than I ever thought I would love a piece of formed plastic. Wait, that
didn't sound very good, but you know what I mean...
