Re: Slightly OT 802.11 question

2005-03-14 Thread vicki Duggan
Hi what book is it going into?
because you can strip down the orinoco cards.
my i book has an orinoco card with the black end cap removed.
I removed the ibook airport card retaining clip and put a piece of
electrical tape on the under side of the keyboard where the card
touches, also on the metal base under the keyboard. placed the card in
and it sits on the shelf part of the book nicely, connected up the
antenna the put back the keyboard. you get a very slight rise in the
center of the keyboard, but it does not touch the screen when closed
and you need to keep the center locking catch for the keyboard locked
to hold it in.

It has worked fine since i done it in November last year no problems
and i never turn the ibook off (just to sleep). and i use the airport
software under X to run it.

vicki.

Re: Headsets

2005-03-14 Thread Luis Sequeira
This seems a silly thing for Apple to skimp on. The mechanism is
already there for the built-in mic. Seems like it would be simple to
make it work for a plug-in mic. In fact, the built-in mic is nearly
useless anyway. It just picks up the noise of the computer. It would
make more sense to leave it out and include an external mic as standard
equipment.
I agree.
The device suggested seems to be a good one, but I wonder about an
alternative. Would a bluetooth headset work by itself, without need
for a device such as iMic?
I have no direct experience, but I have read reports of people for
whom that works - i.e. the bluetooth headset appears as an option for
both input and output in the sound system preferences and can be used
for, say, ichat or skype (or even inputting sound for iMovie); and
people that say it does not work for them. My take is that some
bluetooth adapters are more compatible than others (and the same is
probably true for the headsets). The best option, if available, would
be to try before you buy.

I, for one, am very pleased with bluetooth functionality (using a
cheapish Anycom adapter in my TiBook), but I don't have a headset,
so I can't try that.

Re: New laptop possibility

2005-03-14 Thread Tim Collier
I've never really used OS 9 since I switched in 2001 back when 10.1 was just
released. My first Mac was a G4 867 tower and it booted into OS 9 but I
wanted to see what OS X was all about to I restarted it and never went back.
All of the software that I've purchased has been for OS X. My desktop is a
20 inch G5 iMacI think I told you and I only use OS X on itnever run
classic and don't have classic installed on either.
When I bought the iBook, I knew that 256 wasn't enough, so I bought an
additional 512it was a bit of a challenge installing it as you need a
'tiny' screwdriver to do ithad to go out and buy one. But once I got
it, it was easy.
Yes, I knew that there was an OS 9 (classic) install on the other disk. My
other OS 9 installation disks are for G4's and say so on the disk. So, I
don't think you could use them to install on anything else.
Since switching from PC, I have become a true Mac Addict!

Take care,

Tim

my home business as well, providing I can get my cutter to work off
it. Worst case I keep the 6500 which isn't worth much on the open
 market anyway!

Right now the book is a bit slower at only 256mb. When will Apple put
real ram in their machines? sigh I upgraded the desktop to 1gb
 right off the bat.

I have 2 iPods compliments of my SO. The 5gb 1G when it first came
out, and then xmas 03 for some reason he decided I needed a bigger
one so he got me the 40gb 3G. I hadn't even filled the 5gb yet.
Anyway, I do take them out blading, biking, running etc and even in
the car, depending on where I go, I'm a nervous wreck with them. I
think the Shuffle will put my mind at ease some. If he had bought it
for me without the 'book, I know I'd have the bigger one but honestly
neither of us will use it for more than 8 hours at a stretch!

I did find the 9.2 install on the cd's with the iBook. It's on the
repair cd, under install additional software. How odd is that, you'd
never find it unless you looked. Are your cd's like that or are they
complete 9.2 cd's? You may be able to twist my arm if that's the

Thanks, I hadn't realized that! I ended up with the $999 iBook. I had

So new iBook, Airport Express and a 512 Shuffle for the house.
Hubby said I would have gotten the Shuffle for my bday but now that I

Only 256 Meg of 512 Meg RAM is recognized

2005-03-14 Thread Brian Stewart
Went out yesterday to BEST BUY looking for a 1 Gig Memory SO-DIMM for
my;
12 PowerBook G4 867 MHz

It requires a 266 MHz 200 pin SO-DIMM DDR memory chip. I found a 512
Meg stick and was informed the 1 Gig chips don't exist. So much for the
Geek SQUAD, should be Geek Squids. Well the factory 256 Meg is just
not cutting it and I opted for a 512 Meg Card, I picked up a K-Byte
Memory Chip - 2100/2700 512 Meg DDR SO-DIMM chip for my powerbook. The
power book only sees 256 Meg of the 512 chip for a grand total of 384
Meg.

Good thing I picked it up at a local best buy to return it hassle free.
Anyone else have this problem? I had a similar problem with single
sided 256 PC133 SIMMS on my PeeCee.

Any Suggestions? I would like to buy the memory local, it is better to
spend a little extra and have the ability to test and return the RAM if
there is a problem. I like E-BIZZZ but memory for an Apple Laptop
could be a pain in the butt.

I have purchased 512 MB chip for 1GHz PowerBook 12'' on the web. The chip
that arrived in 2 days was bad so I sent it back and it took abour 10 days
to get a replacement that works fine. It is not the highest speed, but
reasonable enough to get what you want for reasonable money.

The handlig by the zipzoomfly.com was very good. No hold-ups on their side -
it took them 24 hours to respond to the RMA and then it was only a matter of
shipping the chip back to them and waiting for the new one to arrive.

You may try CompUSA if there is one close by or MicroCenter - they also have
Macs on display and could advise you which memory works best. I myself got
the Kingston Value RAM and I'm happy with it.

customers for memory. You can get the same memory from other dealers for 2/3

Kernel Panic

2005-03-14 Thread Adam Hargrove
My first time having to deal with this, I'd love some assistance.
I have an old 466MHz SE Graphite iBook (the clamshell one). I had
10.1.5 up on the machine and yesterday tried to upgrade to 10.2. The
upgrade went through well apparently until time to reboot. Now it
kernel panics.

Following Apple's documentation, I've reset NVRAM PRAM and tried to
boot from the Mac OS X.2 install disc. When this happens, it boots to
the gray apple, then I get video problems (once an overly bright screen
wash, once lots of verticle gray lines) and a freeze. A soft restart is
possible (Apple-ctrl-Power), so I've not reset the PMU.

I've tried to boot from a stray OS 9 boot disc (from my PowerMac g4,
BTW). This time I only see a blank gray screen -- no happy Mac. Again a
freeze/restart.

Lastly I've tried booting from the old X.1 upgrade disc: I get the
happy Mac, spinning beach ball, then Unresolved kernel trap. And the
X.0.3 install disc: the same except this message instead: The
Installer has unexpectedly quit. (error 0) Press Return to restart
which fails to restart, then messages kmod_destroy: etc. etc.
Freeze/restart.

Any ideas? I'm out of 'em. Should I pull the hard drive?
Thank you for your help!
Adam

Reseat your RAM, possibly replace it...such kernel panics are usually

It could also well be a munged upgrade. Try resetting the PRAM three or

Login Window Root

2005-03-14 Thread Junk
Anyone mind if I ask an insanely simple question? That I can't figure
out and it's making me nuts?

I'd like for when my PB boots up, in the login window to have my users
listed but also the other window that allows mw to log in as root.
for the life of me i can't remember how to do this. i set a master
pass for the machine, and went into net info manager and authenticated,
but all that shows up in my login window is a list of users.

i'm on 10.3.8
thanks in advance :)

In the accounts pref pane change it from Display Login Window as a List
of users to Name and Password.

I'd also reiterate that is is a BAD IDEA.
Running as root in the OS X GUI causes a variety of things to break,
since the system operates under the presumption that root is a
non-login account, and there's nothing you can do as root in a terminal
window that 'sudo -s' doesn't let you do, afaik. (sudo -s gets you a
shell as root. very useful command.)

Allowing a root login opens you up somewhat to attack, to no good
reason.

I don't advocate it for any unix installation. On our servers root can
log in directly on the console, and that's it; those are behind a
locked door.

For any other usage you have to connect as a user and then su to root,
and if I have my way on our new ones, we'll have to use sudo instead of
su, as that's logged and su isn't.

It does mean your user password is the key to root, so it has to be a
good strong one

Tim, do you realize how much is a bit more? Apple is known for overcharging

anyone familiar with this problem?

2005-03-14 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Hi all
I'm a newbie to the list, so please forgive me if I breach protocol in
any way!
I've used Macs for years, but this is my first G3. And I've just run up
against a big problem, one that I've never encountered before, and which
prevents me using it at all.
I'll try and be as clear and concise as possible, and give as many clues
as I can:
My G3, OS 9.1, which altho not new, is new to me--I've been using it for
about a month.
Last week when I booted up I noticed that a few dotted lines had
strangely appeared on my desktop screen.
I went ahead with my project of the evening, anyway, which was to
download OutlookExpress506ENU.bin.
By the time the download was done, the screen was covered in a rash of
dotted lines and the cursor had a shadow that looked a bit like the
shape of 2 AA batteries trailing behind it.
I was still able to get on the Internet, and the opening page of the
website I went to was ok. However, as soon as I began scrolling
down--not before I scrolled down--the text and graphics on the page were
replaced by a rash of dotted lines making it impossible to continue. It
didn't matter which method I used to scroll--dragging the right-hand
sidebar down, clicking on the little black down arrow, or using the
keyboard arrow--the effect was the same. I noticed that clicking on a
part of the page restored that small part of the page to normal. By
the time I got back to the desktop, to shut the laptop down, the desktop
was extremely distorted and the menu at the top had disappeared. I had
to use the keyboard to shut down.
That essentially is the problem.
Here is some additional information which may or may not be useful:
1. I've had the laptop for 3-4 years without using it--just powering it
up from time to time to make sure it hadn't died on me.
I only began to seriously get it up and running about a month ago. My
brother-in-law (who had kindly given the laptop to me), was worried
there might be a PRAM issue when the
date went haywire about six weeks ago, ago, but installation of a good
battery seemed to solve the problem (so I haven't done anything with the
PRAM).
2. I had been successfully word processing.
3. I had been successfully using the Internet, but I needed to upgrade
from 4.5 Internet Explorer, which I did, successfully, after downloading
Aladdin.
4. I subscribed to the ISP fastermac.net a month or so ago, but realized
I needed to upgrade my Outlook Express (altho I can receive email at
fastermac.net, I found that I can't send it, until I upgrade from the
current Outlook Expres 4.5).
5. The evening I noticed the dotted lines on the screen was the evening
I planned to download OutlookExpress506ENU.bin. I did download, but
while the download was going on, the screen was becoming covered in
dotted lines. I don't think it was the download that caused the problem,
since (as I mentioned previously) I had noticed a few stray dotted lines
on the screen when I booted up.
If anyone is familiar with this scenario and knows what's going on I
would really, really appreciate the feedback.
Thanks in advance!
Kerry M.

two questions:
What model do you have?
What does the screen look like when you reboot?
There were 4 G3 Mac Powerbook models.
The original Powerbook G3, which looks like a 5300, aka the Kanga.
http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/g3.shtml
Then there was the Powerbook G3 Series, aka the Wallstreet.
http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/g3series.shtml (also a series II)
It has two PCMCIA slots and SCSI on the back.
Next was the Powerbook G3 (bronze Keyboard) aka the Lombard. It has
only one pcmcia slot, SCSI and USB ports, and the afore mentioned
bronze keyboard. (kinda brownish transparent keys)

http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/lombard.shtml
Finally there was the Powerbook G3 Series Firewire, aka the Pismo. It
has no SCSI, but does have firewire slots, and the same bronze
keyboard.

http://www.lowendmac.com/pb2/pismo.shtml
The fact that it got worse after being on a longer time implies a
hardware problem, getting worse as the system gets hotter.

Re: Mac OS X utility question, command line answer

2005-03-14 Thread Brian Scott Oplinger
OS 9 has the nifty utility Apple System Profiler. Does Mac OS X
have something similar? I just found a need for it, but can't find
the app...
And for folks like me, who can't run the Apple System Profiler
because of some font I installed...

You can run system_profiler from a command prompt in a terminal
window. I have the full developer tools installed, so I'm not sure if
they are required for this ability or not. The full path to the
system_profiler is /usr/sbin/system_profiler, so anyone without the
dev tools can check and see if its there.

And this leads to my question...
I mentioned a font issue. As I've many fonts installed, and have seen
nothing but people's disappointment with OS X font utilities, is
there a font utility that works well in OS X and can diagnose font
issues in OS X? Two utilities would be ok, one to do fonts ala Adobe
Type Manager for OS 9 and a different one for diagnosing fonts would
be fine.

past.. I tried turning the bluetooth on the powerbook off and on, and
still no dice, and I have power cycled the phone dozens of times,
still just does not want to connect anymore... any thoughts?

I ran into this exact problem. What I did to solve it was connecting
without using Quicklink Mobile. Panther can work with a phone as a
modem if the settings are correctly inputed. To do this, bring up the
Network dialog box under System Preferences. Under Location select
either Wireless Internet Express or just Wireless Internet and
under Show select Wireless Device. The Service Provider, Account
Name, etc. should already be inputed, if QuickLink Mobile was already
installed. If not, call Cingular and they should know what info to put
in. For example, my account name is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] The number
to dial is: 18472549270

The line Cingular gave me to the cause of this problem is due to the
fact that they are upgrading all of their cell sites to Edge, the
broadband standard which will eventually replace GPRS connections.
Hope this helps,

Since Cingular bought ATT, and I'm with ATT, I thought I would provide you
my settings. In my case, the number to dial is *99#. No account name and
password. Configure IPv6 is Off. I had no problem connecting using my Sony
Ericsson.

Pink screen

2005-03-14 Thread Dennis Reeder
I have a Pismo 500. Everything works just hunk dory. But I
occasionally get the 'pink screen'. Starts in the lower left hand
corner and in its worse case it stretches up about 2 inches into the
screen. Sort of fans out from the corner.

Does not matter if the Pismo is running on batteries (a 6600mAh 10.8v
Li-Ion) or if it is plugged in. Doesn't matter if its on my desk at
home or somewhere else. Does not appear on a fresh start up. Only
appears after the Pismo has been awakened from sleep mode.

Screen is fine. No missing pixels. I do have a Belkin 54g wireless
card inserted into the pc slot.

So what's the diagnosis? Will it get worse? Can it be repaired?
Expensive? DIY or best left to an Apple tech person?

Thanks for your help.

New Member- iBook clamshell graphite

2005-03-14 Thread Andrea Stansbury
I just got one off ebay and love the machine. I have ordered one of
the original airport cards and do not have a base station. But I do
have DSL through the phone company and a wireless gateway that is
supposedly compatible with macintosh.

My question for now: will I have the ability to get wireless at say the
coffee shop with the old airport card? Are there suggestions for a
wireless booster that would work to make the iBook useful in any room
in my house?

I'm sure there will be more questions as I get the airport card and get
it installed, which I don't think will be a problem.

You should have no problem connecting to any wireless location at this time.
Almost all of them support the 802.11b (the protocol used by the older
AirPort card) and few, in my experience, support 802.11g (the new AirPort
card).

Yes, it just isn't as obvious. Open the Apple menu (click on the blue
Apple in the upper left corner of your screen), then click on About
This Mac, then click on More Info.
