Re: Praise for Dual-USB IBOOK

2005-05-26 Thread mray
I have had my iBook for about two years now, a lot of traveling, and
graphics/presentation (Photoshop/Illustrator/Quark/InDesgn/
Dreamweaver/Powerpoint) use. Up until 6 months ago it was my main
system. Other than the Logic board problem (fixed in 4 days) haven't
had a problem.

Great range in my older, very solid 100 year old 4 story house.
Airport base station on the 3rd floor, and computer used it in the
basement, on the deck and in the back yard.

My daughter has adopted it now, surfs, instant messages and writes
what seems like almost non-stop.

Really like the 'book.

Time to head back to physics class but stay awake this time.

No, magnetic fields are not radioactive.

Yes there is lead in the solder (although it's been / being replaced).

There may be some small amount in the caps but not much. It isn't
sprayed on the boards, that would be nuts.

While current theory says that light exists both as a wave and a
particle you usually refer to it as one or the other, not both as in
"photon waves". In any event they don't come out of the electron
gun(s) but from the screen when the electron strikes the screen.

Well, actually the X-ray E-field radiation, not H fields, but Our

Well, actually E-M radiation. It's caused by electrons above some
voltage hitting a ground potential giving up their energy in the form
of X-Rays. Medical diagnostic X-Rays are somewhere around 100KV.
Theraputic X-Rays run from 4 to 30 MV and require a radio-isotope or
particle accelerator. Been there, done that.

a good reason to have LCD screens? Are there similar problems there

Power consumption also. LCDs only use a fraction of the power of the

And, not to lose the main point, approx. 7.5 pounds of lead per
monitor means there is a lot of lead going into landfill sites!

I don't know of anything in an LCD display that is nearly as bad as
the lead. I don't think there is anything. No one really seemed to
care about what was in a CRT monitor until LCDs provided an
alternative.

We may not find out until a next generation display technology arrives.

Lead doesn't shield magnetic fields. The lead does shield

Besides the lead is inside the sweep coils, kind of hard to shield
something that way.

I was planning on eBaying my 500 G3 iBook for quite some time and have even
replaced it with a 1.2 G4 iBook with 1.25 gigs of RAM, but can't find it in me
to get rid of the beast. The 500 really is a great machine in many ways, runs
Tiger almost acceptably (if you use Safari and not Firefox or the like), and is
superior to my G4 iBook in two ways:

1.) Awfully easy to display Powerpoints/presentations on TV. One A/V cord and
you're rolling.
2.) Doesn't bend. Had to trade in my first G4 iBook because it became bent
just lugging it in my laptop case around campus. Warped so that it wouldn't
sit straight and then started locking up. Nice. I'm overly careful with its
replacement, but it bends like putty if you're not careful too.

At the same time, I've considered pitching the 500 to LEM as a Road Apple.
Why? The main gripe is that Road Apples are supposed to be examples of
machines hobbled with no good reason for the hobbling -- like the ADB-less
Powerbook 150 that's otherwise a good machine. The first few iBook dual USBs
can't, even with the firmware hack, span monitors. Makes the iBook a true
roadie-only. My G4 right now is putting out 1280x1024 on an external and
1024x768 on its on screen. *Very* nice. 1024x768 is great for an entry-level
'book, but isn't enough real estate to make me as productive as I could be when
in the office.

There really isn't any reason any iBook shouldn't be displaying on two
monitors, or at least allowing for a larger "virtual desktop" and higher
resolutions on externals if mirroring. This would make the iBook a real
desktop replacement.

The fact that 500s can't do it even with a hack drives me crazy. Add to that
that the 500 really isn't *quite* fast enough to run OS X and sure as heck
ain't doing iMovie and iDVD worth much and, well, I think you have a decent
Road Apple case. (Yes, I realize Apple is trying to sell Powerbooks, etc, but
the hobbling is what drives me mad.)

Backup/archiving app., OS 10.3.8 compatible needed. . .

2005-05-26 Thread Stanton Mitrany
Please suggest an OS X 10.3.8 compatible backup application that's free or
inexpensive shareware which I can use to copy (burn) a large (5 GB) folder
to multiple 700MB CD-R's in the internal combo drive in an iBook 500.

I need to reformat the Hard Drive, which currently has only one partition,
and is only set up with OS 10.3.8, into two partitions, so that I can
install both OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.3.8 separately. I don't wish to manually
break up this folder to archive it. I'm hoping your suggestion can help me
to reinstall it onto the iBook once I've reformatted and installed OS 9 & OS
X.

My copy of Retrospect Express v.4.3 won't work in OS X. I'm looking for
something which, like Retrospect, can produce a series of linked CD's to
archive something larger than 700 MB.

I'm looking to be able to download the application you suggest, and get to
work. What do you suggest?

Thanks,
stanton

Listas,
Just like to suggest that you check your mail account regularly if you
use .Mac mail; while they are generous, (let my total get up to 130
megs out of 100 set!) before they started bouncing, there was no
warning from them of the over quota - until I started getting phone

No they're there to prevent the magnetic fields from affecting other

That's the same isn't it ?!

No. The power manager's a separate bit of electronics:

But the point's moot since you seem to have got it working. If reset-
all did it, it was confused sleep settings in NVRAM.

No they're there to prevent the magnetic fields from affecting other
nearby electronics devices, and vice versa. It's not shielding us,
but the image on the screen. Stick a magnet up to the screen of a CRT
and see why (press the degauss button afterwards...)

Same reason all those metal bits are inside the case lining your laptop.

My original 17" AlBook is going this way for the 2nd time - the cable
cover of the line from computer-end plug to adapter has pulled away
from the plug so you can see the 2 inner wires. I've got it wrapped

Re: Praise for Dual-USB IBOOK

2005-05-26 Thread Adam Thayer
Here is the weird thing... I have seen the key problem (which exists on
pretty much every Apple laptop between 1999 through the last couple years),
I have seen an airport antenna sliced, but haven't seen the video chip
unseating. Of course, it seems like the flaw for the video chip occurred in
rev B iceBooks and later. The very annoying thing about the iBook G3 line is
that every single rev has some sort of major design flaw, but they never
shared the same one very often. I personally don't count the key issue as a
major flaw, because I have seen one key break (which was replaced for free),
which was on a 3-4 year old iceBook with literally more use than many home
desktop machines (4-5 hours a day usage).

What's the possible causes --- the power regulator board?

First thing to try is PMU reset. Hold down fn+control+shift+power keys

Really? 2MB of vram should give you millions at 800x600. I use to run my
7300 at 1024 at thousands 99% of the time and when I needed to edit some
pics
I would switch to 800 at millions. Then I got the 2MB vram upgrade and then
I was 1024 the whole time at millions.

If you hold down the option key and select the color prefs does it give you
the option for millions at 800?

No dice! In x 10.3.9 with patched rage pro drivers the only options are
thousands or 256 at1024x780.

Re: [OT] What to do with old CRTs?

2005-05-26 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi Laurent,
CRTs are nasty items. An average 17" monitor holds 7.5 pounds of lead
(protecting you from those radioactive isotopes). In your CRT computer
monitor there is also phosphorous, cadmium, barium and mercury. As a
product, these hazardous materials are safely sealed. (The lead is imbedded
in the glass, for instance).

However, when the monitor is sent to a landfill, heavy equipment is used to
compact the waste. This crushing and smashing of the waste causes the
hazardous materials to be released and a leaching process can occur as a
result of CRT breakage. These toxic materials will probably find their way
into our water supply. When the glass is crushed by trash facilities, the
lead-bearing particles and phosphors become an airborne hazard.

Some states have banned CRT disposal in landfills. Here in Oregon, we have
an "interim policy", meaning, folks are discouraged from dumping monitors.
Our nonprofit takes in 20-100 monitors a week. We gift working monitors with
the computers we give away, we sell some in our thrift store, and we recycle
the monitors that are too small, to old, or broken. Besides our rent of
$4500.00 a month, monitor recycling fees are our biggest expense. We are
committed to not dumping in international back yards-a VERY big nasty secret
within the recycling industry.

Because we specialize in Macintosh, we are faced with an additional problem.
Apple manufactures the wonderful "all in one" (AIO) computer. Monitor
recyclers will not accept AIOs (more hardware to deal with, more screws in
the take apart). Unless we are willing to pay $20.00 a piece to recycle the
AIOs we are stuck with 00s and 100s of nonplacable machines. So, we have
started a program were we dismantle the AIOs and recycle the bare CRTs. This
lowers our cost and makes it possible to continue to work with schools (the
biggest generator of AIO waste because they are the biggest buyer of them).

I am delighted you are considering the impact of the dead monitor on your
environment. Apple recently got some VERY bad press for not designing their
products for recycability. Panasonic is really moving on this, so are a few
big manufacturers.

If you recycle your monitor with a responsible nonprofit or for-profit
business, you can know that the material won't be dumped in other countries
and the material will be reused. Lead from monitors is used to make new
batteries, the glass may be used for road surfaces, the plastic may be used
in your car dashboard, or new computer plastics, or maybe that new Barbie
doll in the shop window.

LEM list members ship us their monitors on a regular basis. If you ship,
remember to include the $15.00 handling fee (whether the monitor works or
not).

I have my Apple Studio Display 17 that stopped displaying a picture
last
week. I did replace it with a 19" LCD display, so I'm not really
trying to

repair it.

However, I already had an Apple Studio Display 21 that stopped
working last
year. So, I have 2 of those big CRTs taking space and I was wondering
what
to do with them. I'm pretty sure that the problem is with the power

to

repair them.

I'm not looking to repair them, just to get rid of them. I was
thinking that

I could maybe offer them on the LEM-Swap list.

Probably not worth it. Even repaired, they're not worth the cost of
shipping them; perhaps you can find a home for them locally. But
there's a huge glut of CRT's out there.

We have two different charitable organizations here that refurb
computers; both are now telling people they no longer accept CRT
monitors unless they're coming with the whole computer, and if they
could just have the computer, pretty please...

This is a serious problem, these things are toxic in landfills and
very expensive to recycle.

If you have a local freecycle group you
might get someone to take it off your hands...

Hear, hear! This whole subject niggles at me constantly. I've got a
lovely old monochrome portrait monitor that I used for a long time with

got it packed away, moved it across the continent a couple of times
(with my wife smiling as I lug it to the truck because I don't want it
banged, even though it now has a crack in one corner of the front

Quite manageable, better if you kick it up to a gig of ram.

2. Are there any alternatives to DVD SP 4 that are worth

There's a OSS program called Sizzle that lets you do this.

Probably not worth it. Even repaired, they're not worth the cost of
shipping them; perhaps you can find a home for them locally. But
there's a huge glut of CRT's out there.

We have two different charitable organizations here that refurb

could just have the computer, pretty please...

This is a serious problem, these things are toxic in landfills and
very expensive to recycle.

If you have a local freecycle group you
might get someone to take it off your hands...

Many communities offer computer recycling drop-offs. It pains me to
trash hardware, but CRT's are esp. dicey to fix and there is no
market for them used.

Really? 2MB of vram should give you millions at 800x600. I use to run my
7300 at 1024 at thousands 99% of the time and when I needed to edit some pics
I would switch to 800 at millions. Then I got the 2MB vram upgrade and then
I was 1024 the whole time at millions.

If you hold down the option key and select the color prefs does it give you
the option for millions at 800?

it has a 4-way hub (2 at the back, 2 at the side). This link could be of
interest to those on the market for a WS 20" flat panel for their "PB at the
desk setup":

I was considering the 20" cinema display, but the Dell is a cheapo, here in
the UK at 399 GBP shipped vs 472 (with edu discount) for the cinema display.
Also with the Dell I could hook both the PB G4 and G3... and the VCR. Tough
choice...

cheers, gianfranco

If you don't think the scratch is biggie, perhaps you can talk them
into giving you some cash for the damage and you can go on your merry
way... That would be something I would look into.

Re: place to replace aluminum panels onsite...

2005-05-26 Thread Tom Ethen
When I was at the Apple Store for a problem (it is 85 miles away) a AlBook
came in for a customer that had the top replaced and it had a plastic sheet
stuck to it for protection during shipping. I would think the Apple Store is
your best bet for the best service, even though the drive is a pain.

By the way the Genius Bar diagnosed the problem in about five minutes that I
had spent at least five hours on the phone with Applecare for with no
success.
