I noticed after running a few minutes under OS X 10.3.9, the unit would lock up the first time it went to sleep. Under OS 9.2.2, the unit would lock up within 60 seconds of booting. This did not appear to be a heat issue. After installing the XLR8 software, and using the write through cache setting, the lockups under OS X stopped and the unit runs fine in X. I did the same for OS 9.2.2, and it didnt improve anything. I tried an entirely different hard drive with 9.2.2 on it, and the same lock up occurred. I made sure to enable power conservation under both OS versions. it also doesnt seem to be RAM related. This appears to be some sort of software issue with OS 9 and a G4. Re: 12 Powerbook as external DVD player for Television
Thanks for the very clear explanation. I believe that I have the appropriate cables. But the one thing that still isn't clear is do I have the correct video adapter? Do you know if there's a way to tell? I guess the best way to find out is giving it a try (it can't hurt). Connect the video cable and hit detect displays in the display control panel. If the PB desktop (or part of it) appears on the TV screen then you are all set (you might still need to adjust the resolution - in my case it comes up 90% of the times at the right resolution, but in NTSC mode so that it displays in bw, so I adjust it to PAL). Don't forget at this stage to turn video-mirroring on. If it doesn't work and you are sure that the TV (or VCR) is set to the right channel, then the adapter is probably the wrong one. surge suppressors revisited
Several months ago, we discussed using or not using surge suppressors with Powerbooks, and I found out the hard way that we came to an erroneous conclusion. We concluded that the power adapter would protect the Powerbook from a surge. Turns out this is not true. I have to admit that the surge to my book was a big one. A bolt of lightening hit near my house. It knocked out the surge suppressor then continued on, zapping the printer, other items that were plugged into it, and my powerbook. The power adapter was indeed fried. Replacing it didn't solve problems, however. Apple replaced the motherboard, and it now seems to be working okay. Fortunately, AppleCare covered it. It still bothers me that the manual is mute on this subject and even includes an illustration showing the power adapter plugged directly into the wall socket. It also seems odd to me that computers don't come equipped with surge suppressors. Peter -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... A bolt of lightening hit near my house. It knocked out the surge suppressor then continued on, zapping the printer, other items that were plugged into it, and my powerbook. Well, there are surges, and then there are surges. A surge protector will protect your kit against things like switching transients and the like - the typical kind of thing that happens on a distribution system, but it would be an inappropriate expectation if you thought that it could protect you against a close lightning strike. Just consider for a moment what's going on. You have a bolt of lightning that has the potential to overcome the insulating value of a layer of air that's a mile or more thick. If it strikes the distribution line near your house, it has a path to all of your appliances (with only the distribution transformer to mitigate the intensity). If it hits the secondary side of the transformer (your service drop) then you're really in for a blast. Even unplugging the appliances isn't a guarantee that they would be spared. The surge can jump the gap between the plug socket and the end of the cord on the floor (remember, it just jumped a gap of a mile, so this gap of a foot is nothing). And it can certainly pass through and destroy your surge protector, fusing metal on the way. There is a tremendous amount of energy in a lightning strike, and to think that some little circuit in a plastic box is going to stop it is sheer folly. About two years ago we had an incident here where I live in which there was a lightning strike near a home (occupants were at work) and when the owners returned they found most of their appliances - TV, Fridge, stereo, etc. - totally destroyed. They were lucky that the house didn't burn down. What can you do? Well, if you are worried about a close strike, you should power down all of the computer gear, then unplug the cords and move them away from the wall outlet as far as you can. If you have a laptop, either use it on a battery or shut it off too. If you get a lightning strike just outside of the house the air around you will have a very high field strength, and it could damage your computer even if it is unplugged. You'll feel it on your skin. Remember, we're talking about tens of millions of volts here. And relatively speaking it doesn't take a lot of voltage to damage silicon. Putting the PowerBook in a metal box would help. Mostly lightning doesn't strike close enough to worry about. And it more often than not strikes a tree as opposed to the distribution system. And strikes on the secondary would be even more rare. So statistically you are not likely to become a victim of the lightning surge, but it can happen, and when it does, if it's close, you'll be lucky if you don't get some damage. I know of no commercial product that would protect your computer gear from lightning if the strike is just outside your house. The brochure may say it will, but you can take it to the bank that lightning doesn't know what the brochure says. - web P.S. I used to be a utility engineer and for three years I did the protective device coordination for the provincial power utility. Trust me, lightning is impressively powerful. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Problem with Wallstreet HD install
Decided today to try to get a little more life out of the old Wallstreet by putting in a new hd. I had a 30g Hitachi i bought six months ago and stuck it in. Holding down the C key I tried to boot to the 10.2 disk, but only got the flashing question mark. This made no sense so I tried resetting pram, power manager, tried an external keyboard, used a zip with 9.1 on it, and diskwarrior but no luck. Thinking I must have damaged something, I took the new drive out and replaced the old. It started up and I was able to boot the 10.2 disk. Put the new drive in an enclosure, hooked it up to my G4 and formatted and partioned it. Back into the Wallstreet and the same problem. I have installed a number of drives over the years, but this has me stumped. Its got to be something simple I'm overlooking - a real forehead smacker. Could someone please tell me what I'm missing here? Rereading this post led me to understand that you have a clean HD without any OS on it. Boot from a OS 9 CD. Partition the HD in two sections, the first partition must be less than 8 GB. Install OS 9 on the second partition. I don't know if you can do this from your Zip drive, unless you have the disk utility on it. After installing the OS, restart the machine using OS 9 then download XPF and install OS X.3 using XPF on the first partition. I would not install X.2 on the Wall Street as it causes all sorts of flaky monitor behaviours, like a 'melting' effect from which you cannot recover without a restart, no wake from sleep, desktop pictures that are partially scrambled cured by moving an open window around (mine did this on the lower portion of the monitor only). The first two are the real 'turn- offs,' though. I have a 12 WS I upgraded to a 300 MHz processor and 83 MHz bus as a result of the upgrade and added a larger HD as you are doing. X. 3 has run with a hitch and smoothly even with only 160 MB of RAM. I have also worked on a WS II with a 14.1 screen, doing much the same. I had the same issues with X.2 on it as well, but no problems with X.3. If you should go to X.3 do follow XPF's directions for installation carefully as there is a video issue with a WS installation of X.3. I had a WS II with a stock G3/282 in it. The TravelStar HD was an older model without the liquid bearing. Something about the placement of the HD in the WS causes the older drives to freeze up, something about magnetism... Anyway the older drives need to have some kind of shielding placed on them to keep them from locking up. The one I had was really bad; it would lock up after going to sleep; at times it would lock up on start up; at times is would lock up if it idled to long (after I disabled the sleep mode). Since your machine seems to lock up regardless of the OS, perhaps the HD is the problem. I don't believe there are any settings on the HD itself to change. I suggested this because you seem to steer away from the heat issue. I don't recall if the fan on my WS runs full time, though I imagine it must. If yours doesn't, perhaps the fan itself is defective or the connector is not making full contact. You're right it does seem to be a software issue with 9 since the machine performs with the cache write-through on in X. Perhaps you should contact Daystar about this; they were always quite helpful to me with the upgrades I made on my older Power PC's, very responsive. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Lombard Battery/Apple Battery Reset Software
I have two Lombard batteries that I'm considering using Battery Reset on. (A) One battery charges to all five bars but dies within a few moments when trying to use it. (B)The other battery shows it's in the bay but doesn't charge at all. I've read both positive and negative comments regarding success and failure of Apple Battery Reset. One comment is that it has caused issues with charging circuitry. I'd rather replace a battery than have a buggy charging system problem, but am willing to take a chance if evidence sways me in that direction. My specific question(s) is has anyone been successful with either or both situation A and B as mentioned above? My initial thought is that Battery Reset helps with batteries not appearing in Wallstreet, Lombard and Clamshell models and can help with memory issues but is not intended to do more than that. Problem with Wallstreet HD install
Thanks for all the comments, but I don't think We have hit the solution yet. I did format the hd on my G4 and partioned with the 8gb. I then put the drive back in the WS and it did the same thing. I haven't tried the metal strip because I thought this was related only to sleep issues and newer drives did not have the problem. Could be wrong. I tried to boot with a os 9 disk, my diskwarrior disk and even os 8 to no avail. It seems to be a problem with booting from the cd. I can do it with the old drive, but not the new. Should it be possible to boot without a hd in the computer - with just a start up disk? Or does the computer have to see a hd even if there is no OS on it? Maybe there is something wrong with the new drive. __ Yahoo! Mail Mobile Take Yahoo! Mail with you! 10.4 on iBook G4 from eMac DVD?
Hi! I'm new to the list, so greetings! I have a problem that is probably easily fixed and all I need is a little help. So here's the story: I obtained an eMac DVD which contains the install for 10.4. I would like to get this on my ibook g4, but I popped the disc in my drive and it told me that this software won't work with my computer. All I need now is to change the gestalt ID so that my computer will be recognized as an eMac through the install and then change it later back to my configuration? Is this at all possible? I've done this before only it was 8.6... Hope someone can help me otherwise I may have to get the iBook G4 restores Thanks, Jared __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: surge suppressors revisited
No surge suppressor can protect your computer from an arbitrarily large surge, but at least the (better) suppressors come with a warranty that will replace the equipment that got fried. That's worth something (plus the protection against lesser surges, of course). Re: Problem with Wallstreet HD install
Since it will boot to the Cd with the old drive in the computer I would say the problem is with the formatting of the drive in the G4 machine. I would bet that the OS on that machine is X and that would cause the problem. I would try a machine with OS 9(not classic) first too format the HD and then try it. If you don't have that see what you have available to hook the drive to the computer and then format it that way. Re: Problem with Wallstreet HD install
neat work-around I like it. Yes this should work Shaack John Abraham wrote: Hi There, I install a Seagate 40 Gb HD in my Wallstreet 233 MHz plus 512 Mb of ram and had no problems with installing OS 10,1. I have 4 partitions one which is a LInux partition, now this one did prove a problem but that's another story. The same Wallstreet now has a 300 MHz CPU and running under 10.2.8. One thing that I did find out is the Wallstreet is an Old World Mac Computer, This means it is reluctant to boot from the CD drive whilst pressing the C key on start up. If I remember what I had to do was as follows: 1. With the original HD in, place the OS X install CD in the CD drive. Make sure it mounts on to the desktop. 2. Go into OS 9 extensions and select START UP DISK. When you see the options ie: HD and OSX install disc select the OS X disc and reboot. You should now be running on the OS X install disc. If I remember correctly as it is now running from the CD what you do with the HD will not affect it at the moment. I then shut the computer down with the OS X disc still in the drive. I then changed the HD, rebooted and it still ran from the install CD. After this I partitioned the HD with the OS X install disc, remembering the first partition has to be under 8 Gb as this is where you will install the operating system. When you have installed your operating system just reselect start up disc from the install CD to now access the new OS X system partition and reboot. You should now be at the administration screen of your new system. Just set the admin name and password and to the desktop you should go. I hope those works for you as it has been a couple of years since I did it and mine has worked OK since. I take it you're ok? :( I must have missed the original conversation back then. Power Adapter vs Surge Protector vs Lightning Arrestor. A power adapter is a simple box containing a few capacitors, a few diodes, a tiny transformer, and maybe a small fuse. It offers little to no protection against anything beyond minor surges. A surge supressor is a fancy piece of electronics designed to smooth out (supress) the power surges that occur due to normal atmospheric interference. They are NOT designed to protect you from near-by lightning hits. eg: magnetic storm activity, power company foolin around, one too many things plugged into that old bedroom circuit. A lightning arrestor is a large single-trip device directly connected to ground. It's purpose is to route most of a (close-by) hit's power to ground. eg: lightning rods, arrestor boxes on antennas, etc. Another thing to think about: Surges that come up your cable coax or telephone lines. They're the #1 cause of modem death! Make sure they're grounded properly, where they come into your home. And put a surge protector between them and your computer too! Bottom line: No matter how much you spend on surge protectors and such -- if you're in the middle of a t-storm, UNPLUG your equipment. The surge can jump the gap between the plug socket and the end of the cord on the floor (remember, it just jumped a gap of a mile, so this gap of a foot is nothing). A 2nd air jump instead of flowing thru the lower-resistance wires and water pipes in the wall? Your whole home would have to be very badly grounded. Should be rare, but... sigh. A few months after I moved into my current place (renter), during a minor thunderstorm, we blew a modem and a fax machine. To the basement we went... and discovered that Verizon had grounded the phone line to a floating (ungrounded) radiator pipe. Comcast's ground wire was lugged onto Verizon's! The real (grounded) water pipe was another foot to the right... Of course the pipes were clearly marked with large tags as to which was which. :\ - Dan. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... PowerMac G5 1.6 or 1.8 gig single?
G'day, I'm just about to part with my hard earned cash and buy an ex-demo G5 tower and wondered which was the better option: the 1.6 or 1.8 gig single? Do you own one of the above machines and if so what issues (if any) have you had with it over the last couple of years? I've heard that are slight problems with the fan (ie it's a bit noisy now and then), is this something to be concerned about and should I ask the Apple Reseller to sort it out before I buy? It comes with a 12 month warranty so hopefully I should be covered if things go t i t s up... I currently have a Pismo which is cool as but a little on the slow side now that I'm really starting to get to grips with Adobe's Creative Suite for Graphic Design and Mapping work. What about running Virtual PC on it, or is this a big no-no? I'm forced to use PC's at work for GIS and mapping work; as ESRI, MapInfo, et al, can't see past the end of their noses' and think that there is only one OS/Pl! atform in the world, but that's another story (there loss, not mine)... I think it will be a while before I outgrow the G5 me finx *:) Any help/advice/thoughts would be most appreciated. Cheers guys (and girls), Simon 24/06 -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
