I have removed the screen assembly from a lombard to work further

large tabletop to lay it all out on as you go.

It is the backlight, you really don't need to worry until it fails,

I tried and it would not boot, it copied data but could not boot. But

firewire drives and can boot this Pismo from 4 different partitions I
have on one drive. Did a similar thing with a pocked drive too.

Dead Airport Base Station

2005-12-23 Thread Alan Miller

Sorry for the cross post, but it could go to either.

But my airport (I use with this laptop) has stopped giving me green
lights and now will cycle through the start up of Red and Amber but
no green light. I saw one once for a split second when I was messing
with it but it went red before I could even think it was green. So I
unplugged it for for a day tried again still same thing.

Well I figure, it doesn't work so I took it apart (can't help myself,
I'm still a 14 year old boy inside). Found it has a Lucent Tech
WaveLAN silver card in a PMCIA slot. I pulled it out and powered the
airport back up and it cycled through and presto. a green light
like it was working. I guess the card is bad??? I have no other
was to test it, but when I slide it in my pismo system profiler gives
me:

WaveLAN/IEEE:

  Function: Network Adapter
  Vendor: Lucent Technologies
  Type: PC Card
  Vendor ID:342
  Device ID:2

Any Ideas? I am trying to find a replacement card to test my theory.
Anyone have one?

Re: Lombard screen hinges

2005-12-21 Thread Alan Miller
Both my Pismo and Lombard have a almost an inch of play in them if
measured at the top. I have had the lombard apart to the hinges on
the bottom to replace the power board. The screws for the bottom of
the hinges are on the rear of the PB. Looking at the ServManual the
display end of the hinge is much harder to get to as you must first
remove the display and then open it. I really never gave it much
thought on either of my machines as the hinges are still stiff and
hold the screen where I want it. They just have a little play in
them

You can try opening it up and tightening the screws that hold the
hinges to the case or screen. Most of the time it's the hinge
itself that is loosening up but I have had a case of the hinge
attachment to the case being loose.

Re: Dead Lombard

2005-09-13 Thread Alan Miller

Henry,

My lombard did that to me one day. I replaced exactly the same items
as I left listed. It acted just like yours. I got tired of it,
disconnected all the power, PRAM battery too..
Put it back together the next day and it started.. and is still
working to this day

Can't tell you why, but might be worth a try.

I then got to move from a lombard to the pismo my wife was using:-)
It loaded 10.4.2 like a champ. Tossed in a 5400 RPM drive and more

Runs great!

I will say the lombard is obsolete since it can't install 10.4 only

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I had my lombard do that one day, Unpluged all the power and left it
over night (it seemed to be hotter than normal), I got lucky it started
the next day, all fine and dandy.

But then within a few months it died and stayed dark. I had to replace
the sound card and the power supply card. I think the problem was the
sound card, but since I was there I did both to be safe (it's such a
pain to get in there) and I lucked into the parts via a lombard 333
bottom complete and working with no display. Though they busted the
inverter board taking it apart.

I do have an additional question for you. Is the power management of

first.

If you are dead in the water, so to speak, it would seem a power
issue (duh). So, you may want to check the sound card as it is where
the power adaptor connects to the computer. A take apart slide show
can be found here: http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum7.html

I am suprised that there haven't been more suggestions.
OK, sorry to come into this so late, but I have been traveling...
However, immediately before I left I was inside my lombard because it
would no longer power on. just dead in the water.. I have the
service manual and the flow chart states...

Replace the power supply card first, (which is the card below the track
pad that the battery's plug in to) and if that doesn't fix it, then to
replace the sound card which is where the AC cord plugs in. I will
say it's a long battle to the inside of the machine you even need
to remove the display to do it..

When I did this with my lombard the PS card didn't seem to help and
immediately after replacing the sound card I got no results, but after
waiting over night, when I put in a battery it started up no problems
and I am back to using it again. :-)

Very hard to tell what's wrong. So, you tried all reset, Command +
Control + Power and nothing? It could be quite a few things: the
processor has burned up, the logicboard or the PMU...
I have tried all the resets, the little button on the back, removed all
power, even the PRAM battery for a few hours and still nothing. C+C+P
did nothing when it was locked up. I have removed my drive and
installed another and it still will not power up.

One thing I did notice was when I left a battery in it overnight I
found the battery drained the next day, it recharged fine in the
Pismo...

My Lombard, It's dead Jim

2004-12-28 Thread Alan Miller
Hello again listers, I left this list long ago as I was on too many
lists, mostly lurking. and because my Lombard was running great. I
even went to OS X.2.8

Then just before the holidays it locked up as I have never seen. I
couldn't force quit anything and the three finger salute did
nothing. so reluctantly, I pulled the plug, now it's dead!

It will not power up or make any noise with any of the 3 power cords I
have nor any of the good batteries my only saviour is my wife has
this Pismo and since I had a hard drive expansion bay case, I was able
to put my hard drive in it, and start up from my drive. So I have the
ability to get to my data by fooling this pismo into thinking it's my
lombard.

Any suggestions for making the lombard breath again I know my wife
will want her machine back when she gets back from work, and I really
don't want to have to replace the lombard.

TIA

myself wishing I had a good digital camera. I haven't bought one yet,
because I can't afford the quality I want. :-) So, I keep shooting
chemical, being careful on what I shoot (because of the cost) and
 scanning the better results.

My solution was to get a very cheap (less than $200 used) digital camera and
use it for things I know I want to distribute only via the www. This way I
still have quality with no more investment (film) and digital when needed
(mostly eBay stuff), and I can still take my high quality film images I
create underwater and scan them if I really need them on the web.

Until I can afford a digital camera that can equal Kodachrome (and someone
starts making them) I will stick with film. by the way, the digital
recorders respond to light differently than film too, so if you were to
shoot identical images on film and digitally you will see a difference
beyond just pixels.

Both formats have their place in life, and will for some time, but I must
say I was told in 1990 while working in a high end camera store in
Rochester, NY that film cameras would be dead in 10 years because of
digital. It's been 13 and they are still making film cameras, granted they
are suffering a slump in sales growth due to digital, but not dead..
yet.

I've been having similar problems with my Lombard since I started using

I have started a full nuke and pave..

I have an internal Airport card, can't easily remove it...

It works great most of the time. I only have problems with long sleeps, if
it's under 10 minutes it's OK and will work. Even when I started the NP I
found sometime I couldn't get video even when starting up from CD...

Sometimes it would start up fine, making all the correct noised (I have
platinum sounds active) as I could hear the control strip start up and if I
hit the power button I could tell it to sleep (hit S after power button) or
even shut down with return. A PRAM zap would bring it back for startup but

command-option-P-R during boot. Hold these keys down until you hear the

device that is more intuitive now than it used to be.

None taken, film and digital images are still different as the both handle
light differently. It's just easier to get feedback with your digital images
due to the faster results, shortening the learning curve. Both will still
require some learning. Film just uses silver ;-( so it costs more.

Waking a sleeping Pismo

2003-03-30 Thread Alan Miller
I have just added airport to my Pismo 400 running OS 9.1 and started
having problems waking from sleep, usually after it's been sleeping for
more than 15 minutes or so. If it's only been sleeping 5 minutes it has
no problem waking. This is something new since the airport (I think, as
now the computer gets left on more so it sleeps more). I tried updating
to OS 9.2.2 but still have problems.

Any ideas or suggestions on getting it to wake? Currently all I get is a
blank screen, spinning HD and the green led goes out. Hard freeze...
Only recourse is a 3 finger salute.

Well my SMC barricade (sorry not wireless) router died 2 weeks ago after a
few power outages (4 according to the test pages spit out by my printer)
during an ice storm.. so I called tech support as it was less than a
year old.. the tech gave me some info after trying to revive it over the
phone, he said call CS in 24 hours... I did and in 2 days I had a
replacement.. no questions asked, no need to even see the receipt...
just send back the dead one...

All I can say is good company, as I have only had good experiences with them
and their product...

I however did not look closely today as I have already removed, and used a LW

I just got the LW 8500 to work today. It was also free with only 10,000

Reasons to shut down your Mac every night (even though Apple says it's ok so
 sleep it):

 1. It is a waste of electricity.

 2. If their is a power surge, spike or outage in your area it could damage or
 destroy your computer.

 3. Shutting down and restarting your Mac dumps the memory heaps and resets the
system solving a ton of potential issues.

 4. A colder computer is a happier computer. Constant heat form even nominal
operation will reduce the longevity of your mac.

 5. Leaving your Mac on all the time is the equivalent of leaving your car idling
all the time. The tires won't wear, the transmission won't wear, and your
headlights won't burn out, but it's still running.

Kyle,

Thanks, never seen a good list like this one. I knew some of the reasons.

Introduction and Lombard upgrade questions

2002-04-21 Thread Alan Miller

Hello,

I am new to the world of powerbooks, but not the LEM lists as I am (and have
been for some time) on the PCI, and other lists.

I just acquired a G3 333 Lombard (24x CD, 1 battery good for 3+ hours, floppy
and yoyo power cord) for an unheard of $200. :-) It has 192 MB RAM, 4G HD, and
is running OS X (10.1) but does not have classic installed. As I am new to both
the powerbook and OS X I was looking for pointers.

First would be the max RAM for this machine? According to Apple system profiler
it has 64 in the bottom and 128 in the top. Anyone have suggestions for
upgrading and a good place to get more RAM?

How about a HD upgrade as I know 4G won't go far.

Any other suggestions for this machine would be greatly appreciated.

TIA
