Need help w/ Clamshell w/ faulty AC port

2004-12-30 Thread COCCORP
Hello,

I recently obtained a iBook Clamshell 300mhz w/ a faulty ac jack. Before I
take it apart and whup out the ol' solderin' iron, I was looking in my
collection of take-apart manuals and realized that I do not have one for the
Clamshell
iBook. It would be handly, especially the exploded view of the laptop...

Also, I wanted to ask y'all; does the clamshell's ac port come on a
removeable "card," ala the G3 Wallstreet, Lombard and Pismo, or is it fixed to
the
logic board?

Thanks,

Craig W.

Well, what I do is this: On Macs, I use AOL 5.0, which send them in the
proper format for the lists. On PCs. which I am on now, I use AOL 9.0, which
allows
you to select the entire text and change it to "Plain Text." You can also use

Okay; I am assuming that your son's Gateway has a 802.11b card? What brand?
Or is his connection internal, or USB?

Warm + silent Pismo

2004-11-02 Thread COCCORP
Hi, have a question...

A pismo 400mhz I just received as part of a trade has a problem

At one time, it came on and ran normally. Now, when either the Power button
or the reset button is pressed, nothing happens. No fan, no startup "bong" or
any other sound, no pram/sleep light, no nothing.

When I disconnected every power source, then plugged it in after letting it
sit overnight, not even the PRAM/sleep light will come on!

And also, when left plugged in, the laptop gets warm, right where the
microprocessor is located.

The battery does charge, so I am assuming it is the Power card under the
trackpad?

Don't know about the gold Card, but I have a Proxim Orinoco Silver 16-bit 802.11b
card, and I use it with Airport on my 2400c, my Wallstreet and my Lombard. I also use
it on my 3400c, but it has the Orinoco software...

Airport sees it as an Airport card.

Don't know if it makes a difference, but is your card 16-bit or 32-bit? I know there
are some Orinoco cards that are 32-bit...

I think you have the following:

4 MB SGRAM, TV out, ATI Rage LT
661-2019
B9B, DGL, DFM

(I think your "898" is actually "B9B")

That is a Wallstreet Series I logic board. Your processor then is either a

If you get a 300mhz processor, you'll need a series II logic board.

Whenever I have experienced the "Green Light & Spinning Fan" in a Wallstreet,

I am not sure as to what version of iTunes you're referring to, but I have versions

Yup... that is what I am getting...

I let go of the Apple+Power key. I then saw a "progress bar" that went all

flashing as nauseum; after 30 minutes of that, I pressed the restart key...

Doubtful, since it's only doing this with one of the 400mhz processors I

Help w/ Pismo!

2004-09-02 Thread COCCORP
Man, I will NEVER learn...!

I finally got my OS 9.2.1 Pismo 400mhz working, after waiting for a new
processor to affordably appear on Ebay, and buying it... but NOW I have a new
problem.

The auto-update program found some stuff it said I needed to install,
including OS 9.2.2, and a firmware update.

Anyway, after installing it the laptop restated, then displayed a message
saying that I needed to shut down, then restart again, holding the power key +
Apple key at the same time, until I heard along beep.

Well, I did that. But now, the laptop will only flash the sleep/PRAM light
(long, 3-sec flash, then a quick flash, then no light for 6 seconds. The display
is off and I only hear a failt sound of the machine being on.

WHAT in the (hello!) DID I DO?!?

Problems with a Lombard keyboard

2004-09-02 Thread COCCORP
Greetings,

My Lombard keyboard is acting up; some keys work, some do not. The non-working keys
are:

-delete, tab, the whole "qwerty" row except for "[" ,
-the whole bottom row,
-k gives me kl and l gives me kl, and
-the \ acts as return, (return is OK).

Does this sound like like a common problem, a fixable problem, or a replacement
solution?

Thanks,

Short of looking on the Apple System Profiler/some other processor tell-tale
app, the color would seem to be a good thing to go by... but not absolute.

I had an tangy iBook that I sold a few days ago; I WAS going to give it to my
sis, but she defected (!) to the Dark Side (w/ a really nice top-of-the-line
P(ie)C(e) (of...) laptop from our daddy; oh well!)...

But before she got it, she wanted me to make it Graphite on the outside. I
have all the Graphite pieces, and the switch would not have been very hard.

I am assuming your iBook does not boot at all?

OS X startup problems for Lombard

2004-08-16 Thread COCCORP
Howdee,

I am having a problem with my Lombard 400mhz with OS 10.2.

Two weeks ago, I took a HD out of a gussed-up Wallstreet (500mhz) that had OS
10.2, my 1st foray into OS X. Anyway, it has worked well until this evening.
Now, when I try to start the laptop, it shows the white screen w/ the black
apple, and the twirly thing at the bottom.

...and it just twilrs and twirls. The only way I can boot the machine at all
is to use my OS 9 cd-rom; when I do, and go to the Startup Disk control panel
on the HD, I can only choose the OSX startup, as I do not see one for OS9.

(In my best Sally Struthers imitation) .Please won't you help?

OSX < zero

2004-07-30 Thread COCCORP
Hello,

Until yesterday, when I acquired a Wallstreet I with a Sonnet 500mhz
processor upgrade w/ OSX installed, I had no experience with the OS, except for seeing
it on the Macs at my local Comp USA/Apple Store/Micro Centers...

I know "Nooo-THing, NOOOoo-Thing!" about OSX!

My questions are these:

(1) Can someone can shoot me offlist a simple little synapsis (OR where to
find one) that explains the basics? Like :
a-how to boot into OS 9; and are OSX and OS9 "switchable" to another while
already in one?
b-do I need to be in OSX to install OSX stuff, and OS9 to install classic/OS9
stuff?
c-ANY OTHER INFO you think a career 6.x-9.x Mac person may need...

(2) The WS had a Sonnet G3 500mhz in it, so OSX was pretty zippy. Then, I
installed a 233/no cache'r in it. It was s-l-o-w... but functional enough for me.
How does the ibook clamshell 300mhz run with OSX?

(3) If I decide to put the HD from the WS into my ibook 300mhz, will it
function properly? The WS had PC cards for firewire, wifi and USB, and the
corresponding software, so I know some adjusting will be needed.

(4) Even if the HD from the WS cannot work with the iBook 300mhz, I am
thinking of getting OSX anyway, because my wife loves the new look and animation.
She is a lawyer and uses mostly WP programs (MS Word, Wordperfect) and legal
programs like Westlaw. Other than those programs, and stuff like AOL browsers and
music progs that I know have updated versions for OSX, this is all we use...

What's story on MS Office and Corel Wordperfect? Can versions that work on OS
9 work on OSX?

(5) Going back to the fact that the WS had PC cards for firewire, wifi and
USB, and the corresponding software; I have heard that some software and
pherepials cannot be used on OSX. For the ones that can, and have OSX versions, are
both needed on the machine?.

Thanks(!),

Craig W.

2x DVD-R Write
1x DVD-RW Rewrite
16x CD-R Write
8x CD-RW Rewrite
8x DVD Read
24x CD Read

are the same as the MCE version. And the one on Ebay was at a fraction of the
cost of the one MCE has.

In need of VST iBook battery charger MANUAL

2004-07-24 Thread COCCORP
Hi,

Anyone out there have the dual battery charger by VST for the iBook?

Mine came w/o a manual, and I would like to 'cipher what these purty flinking
lights mean...

I searched for a webcite for VST (are they now Smartdisk?) but had no luck...

If not the entire manual, an explanation on how to work the "dang thang" will
be just fine.

Thanks,

USB question

2004-07-16 Thread COCCORP
Hi,

On a recent trip to my local Micro Center, I saw some USB pherephials in the discout
bin, a.k.a. the "Craig W. Department"(!)...

What is so different about USB 2.0, other than the "high speed?" Can it do more?

I am assuming my Wallstreet has USB 1.1. I also feel safe in guessing that a USB
2.0-equipped computer can use older USB stuff. If I ever need to do so, can my
Wallstreet use USB 2.0 products w/ some adapter or something?

THanks,

Flaky Pismo

2004-06-28 Thread COCCORP
Morning all,

I've got a Pismo that is Pismo'ing me off!

I obtained a Pismo 400mhz with a blank HD I am trying to format and download
OS 9.1 on.

The 1st thing I noticed that was odd, once I booted it up w/ OS 9.1 install
CD in the DVD-rom drive, was that one of the desktop's menu bar titles had a
black line through it. Never seen that before...

Anyway, it formatted the HD okay. When went into the install program, and I
noticed that (in the "read me" page and then the software agreement form) more
lines of text seemed to be crossed out, or other wise blank.

Buy the time I got to the Start Install page, it was totally blank except for
the start button. The subsequent install progress display was blank. Also,
the install did not take place, it keeps crashing about a minute into the
install.

What gives? I have used this install CD before, on my 2400 and my 3400, and
it never gave me any problems at all, let alone the weird ones I am having now.
DOes this sound like a problem w/ my processor? the dvd-rom drive? Any help
would be appreciated...

Lombard fan(!)

2004-06-09 Thread COCCORP
First of all, let me thank those who helped me w/ the Lombard mobo-DVD
question very helpful!

Now I am in the beginning phases of diagnosing this recently acquired
Lombard, which will startup at times (sometimes it gives me a contant green light
before I reset) but then usually crashes a few minutes after reaching the desktop.

My initial observation is that the little fan on the left, right beside the
PC card bay, never seems to be on. I am testing the Lombard w/o the keyboard in
place, so I am looking right at it

I am a Wallstreet expert of sorts, and I know the fan is always going in that
G3; it also is constantly on when you get the solid green light while the
laptop is off... In the Lombard I have, in both situations, the fan is still &
silent. It jumps a lil' bit when I press the reset button...

Is the fan supposed to be running on the Lombard whenever it starts up?

Wallstreet processor mitch-match

2004-06-07 Thread COCCORP
Hi, I recently obtained a WS 266mhz off a well-known auction webcite(!), with
the seller using the ol'
"gosh-I-don't-know-if-it-works-I-have-no-power-cord-2-test-it-with" shuffle; I have
had luck in the past, and the price was
righteous, so I took a chance...

Sure enough, when I received it it was acting erraticly; sometimes it would
startup; other times it would shut off for no reason & the fan and the green
light would cut on and stay on indefinitely.

I thought it might be a bad pram and/or charge board and/or processor, so I
commensed to dismantling it. Come to find out, it was a Series I motherboard
with a Series II(!) 266mhz processor!

I put in a 250mhz WS processor and it works fine now.

My questions (finally!) are these: I assumed that mis-matching a WS series I
or II motherboard with a series II or I processor would result in the laptop
not working at all. Eveidently not? Anyone have similar experiences?

Also, by mis-matching the processor/motherboard, is there any chance either
part could have been damaged?

Thanks...

Yes, and it is as easy as plugging the cable into the laptop! PLEASE DO NOT
allow the cable company to rip U off; they surely WILL charge you for two
seperate connections(!) when all you need is a router, which are like $20-$30 on
Ebay for the 802.11b variety!

I use a PC and a Mac at home w/ my cable modem. I have a router that has the
option of connecting via a rj-45 ethernet cable or a USB cable; I use the
rj-45. Since allI need is to provide internet access to both, and no networking or
anything like that, I simply plug two eithernet cables into the router, and
hook the other ends to each computer. All that is left is setting the software
in each to use the connection, and voila!

Now also, since you have a laptop AND because they are cheap these days, you
may want to opt for a router that can provide wireless access also. I use a
Speedstream 802.11b wireless router, that also has three wired ethernet ports.
My PC desktop and 7600/G3 500mhz use the wired ports, and my laptops (wife=PC;
me=P'Books) and color classic use the wireless.

>Also No USB ports. How do I add functioning USB ports?

Well, you can add USB ports to a Wallstreet with a PCMCIA card; there are
several makes out there But if your router has the ability to use RJ-45
ethernet cables, there would be no need, for cable modem access, at least.

Grapplin' w/ a Graphite (iBook)

2004-05-27 Thread COCCORP
Could y'all help me be a lil' sneaky??
;-)

A computer scrapper I work with frequently recently received someone's old
office equipment, that contained what appears to be a smashed-LCD screen iBook.

All I can tell about it is that it's graphite in color. I did not see it long
enough to see if it had firewire, video out or anything... actually I did not
look at it long at all(!), because my friend -- while his first-mind is that
"All Apples Are #*$%" -- once he sees you're interested in something he
immediately goes and researches "EPay."

I learned my lesson last time; he normally tosses PPC'd 540s, G3'd 1400s, or
sells them to me. But last time, I stared at a 3400c he wanted $70 for just a
bit too long(!), which prompted him to boot it up & discover that it was a
240mhz model. A short time later after a trip to EPay, his price nearly tripled.

Anyway, the only other thing I noticed about the graphite iBook is that the
top of the screen display had "iBook" only on the inside, and the button below
the trackpad was graphite also.

Now, barring mix-match cases and internals, of course, can someone help me ID
this puppy, if that's enough to go on? Thanks...

Airport

2004-05-06 Thread COCCORP
Hello list,

My lil' sis is about to start law school; I have been completing the
finishing licks on a Wallstreet I bought "for her"...

;-)

.. but I kinda like it more and more daily! ANYWAY...

I have been looking around at some of the Rev A. iBooks recently, perhaps as
a laptop for my sis. She's all into the fabulous "Reece
Witherspoon-in-law-school" mode (a few shades darker, though! :-), so she'll love the
loud color of
the laptop.

She does not need all of the expandability options that most Powerbooks have;
she will not be doing any data exchanging (past e-mail) or using
perephials... and she honestly thought (when I asked her if she'll need a floppy
module
for the WS) that floppies were extinct!

So, my questions are these:

(1) Can the Airport card be used to connect to the "standard" 802.11b
wireless, or is it the same thing? Can the port the card is in be used w/ a PC card?

(2) JUST IN CASE it is ever needed, do any USB-connected PCMCIA readers exist?

(3) I remember passing by a few blurbs on list and elsewhere about some
problems (mobos?) that cropped up w/ the Rev A. iBooks; anything to worry about,
along the lines of my 2400c?

Thanks...

Craig W.

Wallstreet screen question

2004-05-04 Thread COCCORP
(IF I may interrupt da war...!)

... I passed by an Ebay auction for a 12.1" Wallstreet screen; the seller
says that 12.1" screens cannot work in WS II mobos that were sold with the 300mhz
processor.

Is that so? I was under the impression (and the experience) that ANY
wallstreet motherboard could accept ANY Wallstreet display; the 12.1", 13.3" or the
14.1".

Re: Wallstreet LCD fading to white...!

2004-04-26 Thread COCCORP
Some other things I have noticed...

When fading out, the cursor freezes. IF the screens chooses to come back to the
desktop, the cursor can move again.

Fading out also seems to coincide w/ some programs, and the finder, to "unexpectedly
quit." I am not sure if that is related, however...

Like a kid waiting at the top of the stairs on 12/25 at 4am(!), I am desperate to get
to the local Radio Shack and get a S-video to RCA adapter, so's I can connect this
Ailin' Wallstreet of mine to my room's TV.

WIth the cursor freezing as it does, I am wondering if this could be a software
problem, or w/ my mobo? I cannot believe that, with the WS attached to the TV, that
the mouse/cursor freezing will be any different, even if the LCD screen fades out and
the TV's display is fine.

Hmmm... maybe I need to take a break and take my little ones to the pool? ;-)

Yes, that it exactly what I meant by "service," when I described that I was

Thanks for the info. WHO KNEW?!? I have always turned Appletalk to ethernet.

Yeah; they're okay... and I was always getting connected. My question was,
WHY am I able to connect even though Appletalk was not turn to "Ethernet?"

Marriott is pretty kewl... I mean, SURE, at 1st I was handed a RJ-45

Ethernet question

2004-04-26 Thread COCCORP
ONE MORE QUESTION; Please, Mr. Wiz...!

I am using the hotel's (Courtyard by Marriott) in-room Ethernet (yay!)...

Does Appletake HAVE to be on "Ethernet" in order for the Ethernet connection
to provide service to my Powerbook?

At home I think my PMac has Appletalk on to use my cable modem connection...
but on this WS I am using at hotel, after zapping the PRAM (due to a screen
issue; see my previous posts!) I just noticed that Appletalk is set to the

Wallstreet LCD fading to white...!

At a most inopportune time, while away on business(!), my Wallstreet's 14.1"
screen is suffering from flashes of white "clouds" forming occasionally on the

outlines of what SHOULD be displayed only remain thru the white...

WS LCD's interchangeable?

2004-04-21 Thread COCCORP
Hi list,

I have someone who's auctioning something on Ebay trying to tell me that FSTN
and TFT screens are not swappable from Wallstreet to Wallstreet.

He claims the "Powerbook Guy" told him, but I think he meant that the LCD
itself cannot be switched from housing to housing...

In my experience, I have been able to swap the monitor assemblies with any
wallstreet. Is there any truth to this, or is it like I said; they're getting
the LCD mixed up w/ the entire assembly?

Wallstreet proessor upgrades

What are do's & don'ts, the "must-have"'s and "do not touch"'s regarding

I just recently obtained a Powerlogix and a Sonnet upgrade card, but I have

But now I am asking for real testimonies from actual users... thanks!

SIlent WS

2004-04-13 Thread COCCORP
Hi,

Had another question about a Wallstreet I have; it works fine, BUT the
AC/Sound card provides no sound. No startup chimes, no sounds at all.

When I press the volume button on the Crontrol Strip, it goes to the level I
specifiy, BUT the screen's Menu Bar blinks AS IF the mute button is on.

Then, when I press the physical volume controls above the keypad, the screen
tells me that the mute is still on... pressing the mute button does nothing..

In your (y'alls) learned opinion; is this an ac/sound card issue, or an issue
with the sound controls/mute button below the LC and above the keypad?

Thanks,

Intermittent backlight on Wallstreet LCD

2004-04-13 Thread COCCORP
Hello G-thang'ers...

I need help w/ a 14.1" LCD Wallstreet I have, that is giving me trouble.

When on, the backlighting on the LCD is fine UNTIL one of the following
little accidental or purposeful actions are committed, then the backlighting either
flickers or goes out (until the same act is duplicated) :

(1) if the screen is moved. Sometimes it does nothing; other times it causes
the backlighting to go off. Moving the screen in any manner can most of the
time bring it back.

(2) if the power cord is accidentally or purposefully moved or jiggled, it
can cause the backlighting to flicker or go completely out. Re-jiggling it will
bring it back.

(3) pressing on the clutch cover (the plastic cover w/ the power button & the
screen controls) can cause the backlighting to go out, or come back on. I use
this as my "turn the backlighting back on" action if it goes out by other
means!)

What is the deal? Obviously something is loose somewhere internally, but
what? It first I thought it may be the screen's two connections to the mobo, but I
checked them and they appeared fine. Plus, if that was the culprit, would
moving the ac adapter plug around (when in the AC/Sound card's AC socket) cause
the flickering also?

And I never lose power to the WS, so the AC/Sound card should be properly
seated...right?

Help? Thanks,

Craig W.

Wallstreet logic board/LCD questions

2004-02-23 Thread COCCORP
Hello, G'thang People...

Awhile back, I was lucky enough to get a huge amount of Wallstreet parts from a tech
friend of mine who was blowing out his inventory. He warned me some of the stuff was
broken

Anyway, I managed to put together about 2 working Wallstreet (I and II) laptops, and
they are great! Up until that time, I had not gone past the 1400/166, and I used as my
main laptop (and still use it today!) an ancient Duo 2300c.

Anyway, now as I sort thru the parts that are either broken or need attention, I
notice that MANY of the Wallstreet logic boards seem to have display problems; either
with showing a pic on the LCD or on an external monitor (thru the monitor port or the
S-video port). What gives?

Several boards are labled "no backlight on LCD." Others simply show nothing on the LCD
(a 14.4"), even as the laptop is running. And still others show nothing ont he LCD or
on any external source.

My question is: outside of the 13.3 LCD problems, is losing the logic board display
ability an inherent problem w/ the Wallstreets? As old and s-l-o-w as the G1 and G2
Powerbooks are, I never came across so many mobo/lo'bo issues w/ displays!

Hmmm... in RESPONDING to x privately to a comment x made in an open forum, if
x then is not agreeable to the comment, x can say he/she is being...
SPAMMED?!?

No.

The danger in that is WHAT is offensive? Who judges?

x should know the dangers of commenting in a open forum. SOMEONE (oh, no!)
may DISAGREE...

I don't understand... WHAT EXACTLY is the act(s) that is(are) prohibited?

Are you saying that someone is e-mailing the ENTIRE LIST (except you) with
comments? I KNOW you cannot be referring to ONE member e-mailing another
member...

...because the list CANNOT have any say over how members choose to
communicate with each other! With that kind or "rule" the Swap List would not exist!!

Please 'splain...

(WHY oh WHY am I doing this...?)

Oh yeah... I'm bored...

This may sound CRAZEE(!), but any merchandise that I would have to send in
TWICE to get fixed (unless I did something to cause the problem) would worry
me...

People, let there be no doubt that Apple is #1 Supremo; but I think it is
dangerous to follow ANY entity blindly. Apple is not prefect; far from it,
actually (remember the Powerbook 5300, Powerbook 2400c, PowerMac 52xx...?).

But then again, who is perfect out there ?!?

All I am saying is that lawsuits such as the one this thread was originally
concentrating on (A Long, Long Time Ago, In An E-mail Far, Far Away...) are
NECESSARY to ensure that companies don't start throwing useless, worthless sh*t
our way without any consequences.

It is NOT important what each individual plaintiff gets; what IS IMPORTANT is
the fact that the company gets taught a valuable lesson:

-that it is more cost effective to spend the extra time and money to get
something RIGHT (and label it RIGHT as far as what it can and cannot do) rather
than throw it out there to the comsumer and let us test-drive it for them...

ALSO(!) and I think THIS POINT cannot be overlooked...

...It is NOT important what each individual plaintiff gets; what IS IMPORTANT
is the MONEY THE LAWYERS RECEIVE!

HA, HA, HA!
(Evil laugh, as I smoke my cigar and roll in my pile o' Money on my office
floor!!!)

My $2.3 million cents!

Yup!

Greetings(!) ... and a question about Wallstreet batteries

2003-10-22 Thread COCCORP
Hi,

Long-time Powerbook user (everything from Portable on up!) and I have FINALLY
obtained a Wallstreet I Powerbook!

I got it for a few dollars, because it had been damaged by the previous
owner. I rebuild old 1xx, 5xx, Duos and 1400s in my spare time, so I figured I
could do the same w/ my Wallstreet...

and WAS IT EASY (w/ the manual)! Wow... Alot easier than a 5300!

But NOW I have a question regarding the battery. At first, it started
charging the battery. S-l-o-w-l-y, but it did it. Then, when it was about 3/4 done, I
unplugged the AC, and the battery ran the Powerbook. Did it again...

...but this time the Powerbook shut down!

After which, the Powerbook now refuses to startup w/ the battery installed.
When I try to startup, the computer does the usual chime, then it does nothing.
The sleep indicator blinks twice every 5-10 seconds - not at all as fast as
when it is asleep - and that is it. I remove the battery, and it starts up just
fine...

THEN, when I install the battery in either bay, my Wallstr... uh, WS (see? I
am learnin' already!) does not see the battery. I don't mean it does not
charge it, or use its power; it does not even think a battery is in there!

When I install the cd-rom in the right bay, the WS sees it and uses it. When
I install the floppy drive in EITHER bay, the WS sees it and uses it!

SO what is going on here? Could it be the card with the contacts on it in the
expansion bays? OR the charge card in front of it? Since they charged the
battery for awhile, I wonder what could have made them go bad? All I did was
unplug the AC adapter while the WS was on...

THanks, and glad 2 B here...
