Re: any requirement for OSX on first 8gb on a Pismo?

2005-12-09 Thread chris
Can anyone tell me if OSX 10.4 must be installed on the first 8 gb of
a hard drive on a Pismo?

I recently upgraded my Pismo's drive to a 60 GB drive and I cloned my
10.3 install to that drive. I did not partition the drive in any way and
all works just fine, so I'd have to guess that no, there is no 8 GB limit
on the Pismo (not like the way the 1st gen iMac needs OS X in a partition
that does not exceed the first 8 GB).

Re: Pismo DVD/CD-RW drive

2005-12-09 Thread chris
DVD movies are fine on this one. Retail and DVD-R.

Thanks!

Now I'll pick up a drive off ebay from a Dell or similar and get it
installed in my Pismo.

Thanks to everyone else as well for their advice on this topic.

Re: any requirement for OSX on first 8gb on a Pismo?

2005-12-09 Thread chris
While it's true the Pismo doesn't have the limit, that it worked in
this case isn't a valid test. You can do the same thing to those
machines with the limit and it may work. It depends on certain files
being located in the first 8Gb. The limit isn't on how big a drive
you can have but is based on the boot code being able to load some
files only in the first 8Gb. The installer requires that the boot
volume be 8Gb to avoid any possibility of the files being outside the
8Gb limit.

Very true.

My bad on my reply... it originally had a lead in section that mentioned
that I originally installed OS X (10.3) on a 12 GB drive that was in the
Pismo when I got it about a year ago. Again with no partitioning.

I then recently upgraded it to a 60 GB and cloned it when I did so.

With my lead in section, it makes it a little more clear that it doesn't
appear to have the 8 GB limit. Without it, as you point out, it doesn't
really mean much. Where that lead in paragraph went, I have no idea. I'll
chalk it up to either distraction when I was editing my reply, or my
email client once again ate part of it (for a reason I have yet to figure
out, Emailer running under OS X seems to periodically decide the mouse
has clicked and dragged instead of just moving over an area... as a
result, I periodically loose parts of emails that are selected and then
deleted when I press anything on the keyboard, such as the enter key to
send the email... don't know why it happens, and although it is very
annoying, I've not bothered to spend much time trying to figure it out...
with Classic going bye bye on the upcoming Intel based Macs, I'll be
forced to leave Emailer behind anyway)

Re: What a bunch of garbage!

2005-12-09 Thread chris
I seemed to have mis-placed the trash can in OS9.1. Any ideas on where
it might be hiding?
FWIW, I can still right-click on an item and put it into the trash, and
empty the trash via the pulldown.

It may have been pushed off the screen. You can try doing a Clean Up from
the Special Menu, or change your screen resolution to something less than
it is now, and then back again. That should force all icons to be moved
to fit inside the smaller resolution's desktop space, and thus move any
off screen back on screen.

Re: Pismo DVD/CD-RW drive

2005-12-08 Thread chris
I replaced the dying DVD-ROM in my wife's Pismo with a Samsung combo
drive from a Dell laptop. I swapped the internals in the caddy and
used Patchburn to fully support burning. A little fine sanding and
superglue on the bezel and you can hardly tell it's not the original.

Can you still play DVD movies with it? I know Patchburn lets you make non
Apple burners work with Apple tools, but I wasn't sure if you lost the
ability to play DVDs by going with a 3rd party drive.

I base this fear on the fact that I can't play DVDs using a 3rd party DVD
drive on my iMac DV (its internal DVD drive has eject problems, so I try
not to use it much). However, I freely admit that I don't know if the
failure is because it is a 3rd party drive, or because it is external.

As such, I'm just looking for a confirmation that the Pismo, when using a
3rd party drive to replace the original internal DVD drive, will still
allow you to play DVD movies. If I can get that confirmation, I'll take
the jump and get myself a DVD/CD-RW drive and make the swap.

Re: going wireless with my wallstreet

2005-10-26 Thread Chris Smith
tessa, all...

I have been going online wirelessly with my 64 MB250 Mhz Kanga G3 now
for about a month. It works like a charm, though I want to finish
increasing the resident RAM and getting a bigger hard drive. Took
finding the virtual memory sweetspot to keep it from bombing
periodically and trying out a number of browsers...the most trouble
free browser I found was Internet Explorer 5 for Mac OS 9 with double
the virtual minimum memory selected. But the essential part was
following this fantastic no brainer tutorial (thanks to
penmachine!!!):

http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

As the article showed I could use an inexpensive Dell Truemobile 1150
80211.b WiFi card and I think it took a one click install to to a link
in the article get online! I bid on eBay for several days and having
little money I won on auction by last minute bid sniping an 1150 for
$9 -- does look humorous seeing a Dell logo sticking out of a
multiclored Apple logo'd G3 laptop, but the desktop shows a 3rd party
Orinoco gold card and there's 4 or 5 green signal strength bars at the
bottom of the screen. Wonderfull

I enjoy using this so much, I am taking the G3 on a low budget dream
trip out of country and will blog it online wirelessly, so no reason
to be satisfied with just email capability. Besides if your Dad can
surf with a 100 Mhz Winblows laptop, then don't quit until you can do
that (and more) with a Wallstreet. For instance, once online I found
an old version of iTunes (version 2.04) and also use Audion, for
Internet radio and CD's/mp3's -- all free. Sweet!

However, when I try to use image capture to scan an image, it does

I'm looking for one too. I'd like something with fax receiving
capabilities and either with ethernet port of Airport Express
compatible. Also Tiger compatible.

I've read very good things about the newest Brother units, especially
the 5480cn with ethernet port, around $180-200. But a quick trip to the
Brother web site says that receiving faxes is not supported on the Mac
OS. Too bad, because this is one of the things I'd like to do.

I am also looking at the HP 5510, which has had pretty good reviews.
It's now down in the $120-30 range, so reasonably priced. No ethernet,
but we do have an Airport Express, so maybe could use that to connect
all our home computers wirelessly. Has anyone used one of these? Any
feedback?

And what about Tiger compatibility? Anyone using an MFC with Tiger?

Re: Tiger on Pismo and Lombards

2005-05-04 Thread Chris Jansen
Tiger runs fine on a Lombard. Installing it is the trick, and requires
a new world Mac. You can install it on an external disk connected to
Mac with built-in firewire, or install it on Mac with built-in firewire
and swap the drive into the Lombard.

But after putting the drive into the Lombard, there is no hack
required. See this hint on macosxhints.com for more info.

Can anybody suggest a reliable auto back-up program or Applescript for
 OS X apps ?
I am regularly adding new photos to iPhoto, as well as many new
entries to iCal and my address book. I would really like to have a
program/script that would automatically back up the new additions on a
daily basis at a certain time.

I use Apple's Backup to backup to an external FW drive. Works great. I
think you have to be a .mac member to get it though.

I highly recommend SuperDuper!. It's the best backup app that I've
tried, and the best part is that you can customize it in a million
different ways. I've been using it for about 8 mos. and it hasn't let
me down yet. Starting in version 1.5, they include an AppleScript to
run a fully automated daily backup. It's worth the $19.95.

Unfortunately it's a pretty common problem with Pismo DVDs, especially
given their age now. They often have work only half right, i.e., the
either read CDs fine but not DVDs, or vice versa. Really no good fix
for them, you'll have to look for a new DVD/CD; though while you're at
it you might as well get a Combo CDRW/DVD or a Superdrive. Lots of good
cheap models are perfectly compatible. See the web site

Slot loading burner in G3 iBook

2005-03-18 Thread Chris
Anyone installed a slot-loading CD/DVD burner in a G3 iBook?
Anyone know if there any pics of such a G3 iBook on the web? I know
that the burner would fit physically, just wanted to see how it looks.
Lots of cheap Superdrive options out there, I was thinking of the
slot-loader given the difficulty of finding a tray-loader with
compatible bezel.
Also, as someone mentioned at xlr8yourmac (who installed a
slot-loader), the slot-loader is more convenient than a tray loader. I
might tend to agree, given the AC port on our G3/800 iBook is so close
to the tray, that when you open the tray it inevitably hits or comes
close to the power cord.
Re. 3rd party burners, is it correct to say that they must be set to
Slave to work properly in the G3 iBooks?

Chris
P.S. I've seen the UJ-845 8x burner with Dual Layer support at 100 Euro
or so, so super cheap. Given the demand for an original Combo with
white bezel, I could probably almost break even.

Until recently (and I think it's a recurring deal) the Apple Store has

Re: Hard Drive upgrade choices

2005-02-19 Thread Chris H .
Greetings list, I am a recent subscriber and first time poster. A few
months ago I bought my first ever laptop/notebook, a 1.2 G4 14 iBook,
and while I'm still adjusting to the kb I love not being tied to my
desk.

The fix it guides previously mentioned at
http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/
also have printable screw guides. You print it out for your model and
it has marked locations for each screw type of each step. I wish I had
known about it when I replaced the HD in a clamshell iBook for my GF's
son, I still have a leftover screw and a vacant screw hole that do not
mate. But I figure if I can do that with no prior experience
whatsoever, someone who has worked on PC's and Power Macs probably can
do it on a modern iBook. I've heard that they are not as difficult as
they used to be.

Pismo max ram and floppy options

2004-12-11 Thread chris
I've got a PowerBook G3/500 Firewire model (Pismo).

I'm running OS X.3 on it, but it spools the hard drive OFTEN which drags
performance to a halt. Currently it has 256 MB ram. So I want to max out
the ram, but I'm unsure if the max is 512 or 1024.

Apple and EveryMac claim 512. However, I know Apple often specs the max
lower then it really is (they spec based on what could be tested when the
unit was released, so if 256 was the largest chip size in 2000, they will
claim it tops out at 512 (2x 256)).

LowEndMac claims 1024 is the max, as does Crucial.com.

Before I spend $200 getting a pair of 512 chips, I wanted to know if
anyone was actually running 1024 successfully in a Pismo (and are there
any gotchas I should be aware of).

Also, as long as I am on the Pismo topic, I want to get a floppy drive
for it. I found an Apple Tech Note that says the Pismo can use the
Lombard drive modules (but not always the other way around). I was under
the impression the Lombard has a floppy drive available for it. Can
anyone confirm that I can in fact use a Lombard floppy in my Pismo? I'd
rather get a floppy drive that uses the drive bay over a USB based one.

Or does anyone know of a 3rd party floppy drive module that works with
the Pismo?

Thanks!

Re: Pismo max ram and floppy options

2004-12-11 Thread chris
I have a Pismo with a G4 500 and 1 gig of ram runs very nice! It can be
done.

Thanks

Pismos can indeed take 1GB of ram. I've been running 10.3.5 on a
400mhz with 1GB quite happily for a while now. A few months after I
installed the ram I also upgraded to a 7200rpm 40gb Hitachi drive and I
was surprised by how much difference there was between it and the old
4200rpm drive.

and Thanks.

I am also considering upgrading the HDD. I figured I'd start with the RAM
and see how that does (most of my slowness I know is because of it
spooling data to the hard drive, I can hear the drive seeking... so RAM
should help that quite a bit)

just editing, playback (as in, full screen), and exporting features.
Pro has nothing to do with AVI playback.

I had a Kanga for a short period of time. The Kanga requires a specific
memory board, not the usual SIMMs-DIMMs-whateverIMMs that are in used today.
Since it's specific to it, there isn't a lot of places that still carry
those. And if you would find one, it would be very expensive. To the point
that if you add the money that you would spend on a 64 MB board for that
Kanga, plus the money you would get from selling the Kanga, you could
probably buy a 1st generation PowerBook G3 Series...

IIRC, you remove the keyboard and the memory board should be there, but I
could be wrong.

Unfortunately, I don't. Don't force your keyboard. My memory might be
playing tricks and it might not by removing the keyboard that you can
 have
access to the motherboard. It's been too long since I had it. You
 might want
to do some research on Google and see if you can find anything about
 it.

If I'm not mistaken the Kanga was a bastardized descendant of the 3400
except with a new(ish) motherboard and a G3 processor. I'm not sure
about what TYPE of chip it took but the instructions for the 3400
*should* apply here.

A quick Google search (keywords: powerbook 3400 manual) turned up this

Which seems to help somewhat. I'm sure there are better links. Good

Hi to replace ram in the Kanga you need to undo the 3 retaining screw's on
the base. Then lift the Keyboard off from the touch pad side first, it will
slide forward a couple of mils then out. Be very carefull not to slit the
keyboard cable. The ram card is on the left as you look into the mac and
should look like the one you are putting in only with less
chips.

Be careful when you insert the ram card and make sure that it is seated
properly? once seated the best thing to do is start the mac without securing
the keyboard first just put it in place, if the mac boots then you did it
right. Then you can shut down and secure the screws .

You should need a torx 8 suze screwdriver for the job.

If you need any help mail me off list I will be glad to walk through it
again.

Regarding the Pismo's YoYo power adapter, I think someone once mentioned you
could get a power cord (the cord from the wall to the yoyo) from Radio
Shack. True? If not, where can I get one, and what's the approx. cost either
 way?

 Thanks -

Hello,
If it's the iBook with the square video out port, you can pick up a
Video Adapter for iBook that has both composite video out and s-video out.
You can pick it up from the Apple Store for under $20.

 Dialup or Broad band?

This specific case is a dialup, although a situation involving a broadband
hookup could be useful in the future, if you don't mind.

Thanks,

Hello,

Suddenly half of my hard drive space has disappeared. I was wondering if
this is a bug in 10.2.2 and if anyone has any recomendations to get my
space back. I tried running DiskWarrior but it didn't help, also tried
running the latest Virex in case it's a virus but it found nothing.

Machine is 500mhz ibook running 10.2.2 with no other os's on this drive.

Thanks,

OT:Can anyone recommend MCE service.

2002-11-11 Thread chris thornton
Hello,

I'm looking to upgrade my ibooks hard drive. It looks to be quite an
involved operation so I'm looking for recommendations for people to do this
for me. MCE is one company I found in the back of Macworld and they are
pretty close to where I live. Has anyone delt with them or can anyone
recommend someone in the Orange County, CA area?

Thanks,
Chris

Memory allocation question OS X.

2002-08-16 Thread chris thornton

Hello,

I have an OS X memory question. I am getting an out of memory message from
the email app I use Musashi. It happens when I try and open the trash to
look at old emails. Does anyone know if it's possible to allocate more
memory to the app or am I going to have to empty the trash and start from
scratch?

James said at ÒAnyone Have Problems with Mac OS 10.1.5Ó.
[06/05/2002 19:23:54]

I had a problem last night that might be related to 10.1.5. The my 500mhz
Ti would not wake up. The only sign of life was the white light that shows
at the bottom of the screen would fade in and out. I had to use the reset
on the back to turn it off as no other key commands would work. I've since
turned off all sleep options but haven't used it enough yet to say if that
helps.

Hope this helps,
Chris

2002-05-20 Thread chris thornton

I'm not sure how you use it, but a crossover cable has opposite wiring on
each end for example the wire would be red/blue/green on one end and green/
blue/red on the other.
Hope this helps,
