Re: OT:Gmail and Mail (and back on topic again)
Thanks to Jason, Timothy, Jan and Marcin and others for the input and instructions. I am set up and all seems to be working well with Mail. I set Gmail to archive after getting it with Mail so everything is saved in 2 places. After a couple of years with Mail I tried to back up my old mail and wouldn't you know it, the ONE older email I really need now is nowhere to be found. It will be nice to save everything. Sometimes my OCD desires to save space backfires. Once again, thank you to this great list. We now return you to your regularly scheduled on topic discussions: Using 10.3.8 and everything going smoothly. For those with Pismos who lose their ability to read CD's or DVD's, do you have the LG module? I replaced mine through Wegener Media and have had no problems since. Plays and starts up with everything without missing a beat. By the way, I have an extra module. If anyone is interested let me know. Would be willing to test it in mine, and if it is in good working condition, sell it for a reasonable price. It is strictly a replacement. CD/DVD player but fits the faceplate perfectly. NOT my original LG. Dan- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OT:Gmail and Mail
I have just set up a Gmail account (through Google). Sounds good, with 1GB storage and all. Anybody have this and set it up with Mail yet? How do you like it so far? Googled for this and no clear instructions yet I have not used Mail that much, it is set up for my Hotmail account with HTTP plugin by Daniel Parnell. A short tutorial about how to set it up with Gmail would be very much appreciated if anyone has that info. TIA, Dan- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I get the usual start up sound as well. After waiting 5min or so, I give up and press the power key+apple+control to restart holding down the C key to start again from the Restore CD and it will do this. How frustrating. Any suggestions any one? I had a somewhat similar problem. I tried all of the suggestions from the Apple Support site, but finally solved it almost by accident. I tried to start up with the OS 9 disk, but no luck using the C key. So I tried a couple of times by starting up using the Option key in order to select the CD as the startup disk but I could not get it to show. Finally I just clicked on the OS 10.3.7 icon and then the box with the right arrow in it. It started right up. I then went to the startup disk system preference and selected OS X. Pismo battery problems
I have 2 Li-Ion batteries that I swap monthly in my 400MHz Pismo G3 powerbook, 768 RAM, 40G hard drive using 10.3.5. One of the batteries doesn't lock in place and each time I lug it around between work and home it slips out some. This makes me have to reset the date and time. I had my PRAM battery replaced a few months ago because this would occasionally happen, but now, with this battery, it occurs frequently. Any opinions or info on the following will be greatly appreciated: 1.) Is swapping monthly a good thing to do to maximize the life of my two batteries? 2.) Any way to fix the latch to keep the battery from slipping out? 3.) Does the date resetting mean my backup (PRAM) battery is bad? Thanks, Dan- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Since I work with pilots I have to refer to the conversion charts frequently. Any chance the second set could be in fahrenheit? You can try to manually copy one item from the location you want to backup to the remote folder in the Finder. Then, check the resulting file on the remote computer. If the file is fine, then any sync program should be able to do the job, unless they try to mess up with the permissions. Have you tried my synchronization tool? -Laurent. Laurent, Thanks for the response, your download is in its way to my desktop. I do have an account with the same login name and password on the remote computer. I started to copy a file manually to the external drive and checked the permissions before so I could compare them after. Which brought up another question. When I used SilverKeeper I backed up, then restored from the external after erasing my internal hard drive. This really messed up my permissions. The problem it gave me was changing files that I owned and giving ownership to system and then locking them. Now when I checked the permissions on my test file, it was owned by system. Is there a easy way to know what kind of files should be owned by system and which ones owned by dan? Does it matter? On several large folders of multiple jpeg files I just used the chown command and changed them all to my ownership. The tech at SilverKeeper said that should be OK for data files. Backing up over a WLAN
I'm having some difficulties here. I have tried SilverKeeper, but it has changed ownership on some files. I have Retrospect, Synchronize! Pro X and CCCloner. I tried one of these with no luck and am confused on the setup of another. I'm frustrated. I don't need a bootable copy. I have a bootable CD made with BootCD. I just want something to back up to easily and use in case of any failure or problem. I have a LaCie 160G external firewire drive hooked up to my daughter's iMac. I am networked through my Belkin wireless router. This would make it easy for me to start a backup overnight from my room while I sleep (although the last backup with SilverKeeper took something like 12 hours and duplicated my files instead of updating them). I can follow instructions well. I have successfully setup my network made many changes to my laptop. But for whatever reasons not much luck with backing up. Anybody have success with a particular program? I am using a Pismo 400MHz, 40G hard drive (half full),OS 10.3.4 with an airport card. Pismo fan
Is there a way to make the fan come on so that I can check to see if it works? Maybe an application that will turn it on? I took my laptop apart to replace the PCMCIA cage, among other things, and noticed that the wires were looped into the fan blades. So I'm not sure it would have come on even if the temperature warranted it. Pismo Boot CD, wireless, etc.
A few things: I use BootCD (v0.6) for OS X. Up until recently there was no OS X version, but I just tried it again and although it took some time (6+ minutes), it worked. (another reason for me not to partition...) I have an airport card and a Belkin wireless router with an iMac and my son's PC hooked up through ethernet. It took calling their tech support for my Pismo to recognize the router (needed to use channel 7) but it works great for $49 from Best Buy. I second the opinion that b is plenty fast. I see no reason for me to upgrade to g speed and I like the fact that nothing is sticking out of the side of my laptop. Now for a couple of questions that I think have been covered before but I need a refresher: Is there anything I can do about the pink tinge on the bottom left-hand corner of my screen? I replaced the upper plastics of the bottom of my computer and noticed the coloring immediately after. Maybe just be the age of my machine or did I damage some component? I took it pretty much all apart to replace the PCMCIA cage. And lastly, should I encrypt my home wireless system? Anything hard about setting up WEP? If I just follow the instructions will I be OK? I seem to remember something about using a specific symbol for Macs... Oh and one more... Over on the PowerList there was quite a bit of difference of opinion about using someone else's wireless connection. I was at my daughter's soccer game and sitting on the sidelines I could pick up 3 different wireless connections from the nearby neighborhood. Am I at risk to use these to get online? (I did... surfing the net at halftime on a spring day from a comfortable chair made up for the fact we lost the game...somewhat...) Dropped Pismo, blank screen
Hello All, Late last night my Pismo slipped from my grasp onto my hardwood floor. Landed sideways on a corner of the lid. Popped the lid and DVD open. What a sick feeling Good News: it started up again, nothing physically broken. Bad News: blank screen, big gouge on top. I waited for the hard drive to stop making noise and assumed I was at the opening dialogue. I typed the first letter of my startup name and then my password and it seems to be running OK. I'm at work now with nothing but PC's around. Tonight I'll try either Target mode with my desktop or the external screen with my TV and verify everything is running (except of course my display). What should I look for as the reason for the blank display? (besides my clumsiness). I have installed a hard drive and airport card and am not afraid to open it up but not very experienced with this kind of thing. A disconnected wire? Re: Thank You, May I have another?
Let's try this again... (serves me right for writing this at 3:30 am, but I couldn't sleep, so thought I would try to do something positive. I'll probably hate myself in the morning.) First of all, many many thanks for all the help and suggestions. I have been up and running in OS 10.2.8 for a week now and have only been back in classic just to see if I could do it OK. Now for another question... I know I read something about setting up the original (or admin or some other name) user and then additional users with the purpose of being able to go back to the original if there was a problem with adding programs or features. I tried searching apple support with not much luck and the answers I have seen in this list always seem so much more straight forward and helpful. (and I never mind a little humor, even if my political leanings are targeted...) Thanks one more time, I love my Pismo...and I'm using Safari! Partition my drive or not...
OK I'm finally going to do it...I know I'm a late joiner here, but it's time for me to jump to OS X. I have a 400MHz Pismo, 768MB, 40g currently running 9.2.2. Should I partition my drive when I install 10.2? What are the pros and cons? Also any other hints for the installation process would be greatly appreciated. DPrice, On October 1st I purchased the 40GB Travelstar for my Pismo 400 MHz. I got it from OWC and also got a case to use my old 10GB as an external USB drive (although now I wish I had paid the extra for the firewire). I am very happy with it. Very quiet (my old one was starting to really annoy me with the noise), and easy to install. It was my first time opening up a powerbook for an upgrade. I would not hesitate to do any more installations or upgrades myself. You can get instructions with pictures from several sources. I printed out 2 different sets of instructions and thought it was pretty straight forward. Re: Yo yo bites the dust (cable that is)
On Sat, 08 Nov 2003, Doug Hinschberger [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It appears that the cord/cable that goes from the wall to my yo yo adapter has a break in it right near the adapter end. Tonight I noticed that the battery wasn't charging, and when I moved the cable, there is this pretty little bright white light that flashes about a half inch from the round cable end. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good source for one of these? I'm presuming that it is possible to just by the cable, not the whole power adapter. I had the same problem with a Pismo I had purchased on Ebay last Christmas. At 2 separate occasions I had sparking in the power cord and adapter cord respectively. I called Apple each time. I got a new adapter for no charge. I told them it was used, I wasn't the first owner. Also they asked if there was any damage to the cord where it was sparking. I told them that there was (my cat had chewed on it). They said this was a common problem and seemed very concerned about a fire potential and mailed me a new adapter that day. However, different person with the power cord and I had to pay (don't remember how much, was less than $20). Good Luck, and I would definitely stop using the cord in the meantime. PC card eject button ejected
First of all, thanks to all who responded to my previous question on 'error msg of impending doom'. I guess I am going to take the big step to OSX as soon as I get back from a wedding in Phoenix (where gas prices are up to $3.99/gal due to shortages???) anyway As I was working on something else I pushed in the PC card eject tab on the left side of my Pismo. -taking a deep breath here- THEN I pulled it all the way out! I wish I had someone else to blame this on, but looking around there is nobody here but me... and several pieces of the eject mechanism. I believe it came out without breaking anything. Nothing looks broken. It has 2 black pieces of plastic, a spring and a brass colored piece that looks like a miniature flush handle on a toilet I'm not sure whether to laugh or to be very, very embarassed. Please help me... Again, I am on digest mode so please email me or be patient for my responses. I definitely will be checking this often. Error Msg of Inpending Doom?
Hi all, I have a recurring error message. In the last 2 months it has shown up 5 times, the shortest span being 11 days apart. Here it is: There is a problem with the disk Macintosh HD. Some information may have been lost. Check any recently used files for data loss, and use a disk repair program on the disk. Sounded pretty serious to me..I have OS 9.2.1 on a 400 MHz Pismo with 320 RAM. I cannot use my USB mouse but the trackball works. Time still runs. Opened note pad, but froze on Simple Text. Control/Open-Apple/Power button gets it to restart, but gets to smiling Mac and then continuously loops through the restart process until I press the reset button on the back. That gets it so I can start up fine, just needing to reset Time Date. I have run Norton Disk Doctor, DiskWarrior and Disk First Aid and all checks out fine. Until it happens again. I am anal about backing up (that little USB jump drive is sooo cool), and I have just convinced my wife that I need a bigger HD anyway. (oops, sorry, I should have mentioned I have 10GB, I believe it's the original. I bought this for myself last Christmas...) I'm leaning towards the 40GB Travelstar and hope that it will solve the problem and be a lot quieter BUT would like to know more about this error and what to do to avoid it in the future. I am using Digest Mode, so will check back to see what info anyone has. Been on this list for about 6 months and now can't live without it... Feel the same about my Pismo.
