Re: iBook Drive

2004-04-15 Thread Gary D. Adams
I've got a 7200-rpm, 60gb Hitachi in my Pismo. Works nice. As for the
"chatter"--try resetting the PMU on the clamshell. That might quiet it
some. Going with the 4.86 gb drive is probably not much of a solution.
You didn't say which clamshell she has, but wouldn't that drive be
smaller? Optimizing the drive might help in quieting it, too, at least
according to some things I've read. My clamshell chatters periodically
and has for years.

Gary

Dante McLean wrote:

Sister's iBook (clamshell) HDD is on its way out, I think. Making
"head chatter" noises, really loud--and failing to boot while doing

machine boots fine afterwards, apparently. Have told her to backup,
NOW! So, options? Replacement with new drive, or replace with the
current drive (12 gig) from my Pismo and a new drive for me? Replace
with IBM TravelStar 4.86 Gig from my cousin (PC Formatted, but that
can be fixed) which is a working pull? I do lots of image work and
audio work, she does lots of word processing, ergo IMO I should be
getting a new (read: bigger!) drive, not her.

Recall there was a 7200 rpm drive for laptops out. Anybody have
comments on this?
Thanks.

LaCie has a press release here: http://www.lacie.com/news/news.htm?id=10059

You need examine your drives to check the version of the firmware

another machine which you had these drives attached to. Go into Apple

Maybe not. The power supply connection comes loose from the circuit

Just resolder the connector.

If the YoYo plug is intermittant, you can probably make it act up by
wiggling the cable where it connects to the plug ot the YoYo. If it's
the WallStreet connection then wiggling the plug relative to the
Wallstreet should show it. Try not to wiggle one while you are
wiggling the other.

Anyone have any thoughts besides a new yo-yo? And are there any
alternatives, since I hear horror stories about them?
If your YoYo's bad just start hacking at it to find the problem. If
you have a bad DC cable connection at the YoYo end, split open the
YoYo, strip the wire and re-solder it. Slap on a bit of silicone
rubber for a strain relief. Glue the YoYo back together with super
glue. It's not pristine, but you've got a power supply out of what
would have been landfill food.

If it's the plug on the end of the DC cable, shave the plastic molding
down with a knife and resolder the wires. Slap it back together with
heatshrink tubing and silicone rubber.

My 60GB TiBook drive has 4 partitions, roughly one for the System,
one for Applications and stuff, and two for video work (which can then
be kept defragmented, since I can erase them whenever I need) - for
some people, this might be used for a large iTunes library, for example.

Keeping most of my applications in a separate partition has saved me
huge amounts of time when I recently installed Panther; moreover, I
had cloned my Jaguar system to one the video partitions, which allowed
me a safety net in case something wrong happened (which it didn't).
With this setup I was able too clean install panther with minimum

Re: (Why no extended warranty in Florida): Was: I got mine!

policyholders, and the agents who represent them, must be licensed to do
business in the state of Florida. This includes life, health, liability,
accident and vehicle insurance coverage, plus extended warranties and

Re: Clamshell iBook

This iBook does not have a PRAM battery. I think it uses a capacitor
that's good for a very short times--the time to unscrew the battery and
replace it--if you're lucky. The big battery is the only battery in it.
If the main battery is dead, you need to run it with the adapter and get
another battery--which are scarce as hens' teeth.

Gary

Are you saying you got a Blueberry iBook for $20? The battery is dead. I
don't know the iBook very well but since almost every Apple laptop had had a
backup or PRAM battery, I would think that this iBook had one too. It's
probably a rechargeable one and since the main battery is dead, the backup
battery is dead too. You might be able to get it back to work by keeping the
iBook plugged in for 24 to 48 hours. It might need a fully charged main
battery to do so, though...

in using another type of browser. My question is, will Netscape 7 run
well on my Pismo as is?

Netscape 7 is not bad when it's running, but I find it really slow to
load up. By far, I prefer Mozilla - I think 1.2.1 is the last available
build for OS 9. It's fast, has tabbed browsing, and doesn't go through
all that Netscape/AOL gobbledygook on first load.

Re: Error Msg of Inpending Doom?

2003-08-14 Thread Gary D. Adams
I used to get this message all the time on my iBook in 9.2.1. It doesn't
happen in X. Resetting PRAM always makes it go away. Running utilities
(DiskWarrior, etc.) inevitably shows no problems.

Gary

Dan| Colwell wrote:
Hi all,

I have a recurring error message. In the last 2 months it has shown
up 5 times, the shortest span being 11 days apart. Here it is:

"There is a problem with the disk "Macintosh HD". Some information may
have been lost. Check any recently used files for data loss, and use a
disk repair program on the disk."

Sounded pretty serious to me..I have OS 9.2.1 on a 400 MHz Pismo
with 320 RAM. I cannot use my USB mouse but the trackball works. Time
still runs. Opened note pad, but froze on Simple Text.
Control/Open-Apple/Power button gets it to restart, but gets to smiling
Mac and then continuously loops through the restart process until I
press the reset button on the back. That gets it so I can start up fine,
just needing to reset Time & Date. I have run Norton Disk Doctor,
DiskWarrior and Disk First Aid and all checks out fine. Until it happens
again.

I am anal about backing up (that little USB jump drive is sooo
cool), and I have just convinced my wife that I need a bigger HD anyway.
(oops, sorry, I should have mentioned I have 10GB, I believe it's the
original. I bought this for myself last Christmas...) I'm leaning
towards the 40GB Travelstar and hope that it will solve the problem and
be a lot quieter BUT would like to know more about this error and what
to do to avoid it in the future.

I am using Digest Mode, so will check back to see what info anyone
has. Been on this list for about 6 months and now can't live without
it... Feel the same about my Pismo. Now if I can just get up the courage
for OSX!

Re: Emma's problem...

My Pismo had the same problem during a power outage. I was always
showing 4 lights and then the power went out and the battery was dead. A
good question to consider is how old is the battery? Three years is
about max life on those according to Apple. In any case, I bought a new
BTI battery.

Lewin Edwards wrote:

To help narrow down the possible cause, follow these steps:
Shut down the PowerBook. Connect it to AC power overnight and see if the
battery is charged. If so, your PowerBook should be repaired. If it does
not charge, try the next step.
Make sure the AC outlet works by plugging another electrical device into
the AC outlet and turning on the device.
If the outlet is working, try another PowerBook AC adapter, if available.
Download and install the PowerBook Battery Reset version 2.0 from Apple
Software Downloads.

Re: External drive question

2003-07-23 Thread Gary D. Adams
If it's drawing too much power, the OS will shut down the port. It's not
that. PC's tend to use that second USB-DC connector.

I've had three or four external drives like that--all work fine without
any external power supply.

Hmmm, I wonder if it is trying to draw more power than both USB ports will provide. Try external power and ditch the USB for a FW box.

Re: Battery dead

2003-06-23 Thread Gary D. Adams
The same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Battery Reset got
the same response, too. I ended up buying two BTI batteries from
MacConnection (with overnight shipping) for a little less than $300.
Make sure the batteries at $120 aren't reburbed... but carry the full
one-year warranty--that's the only caveat I'd offer.

Laurent Daudelin wrote:
Well, it looks like one of my Pismo battery is dead, or almost dead. I
noticed a few weeks ago that if it would sit on the shelf for a few days,
the next time I would put it in my Pismo, I would get the last LED blinking,
usually indicating that the battery is depleted. Usually, it would recharge
and I would get many 45 min. of juice out of it.
Now, I just put it back in and, sure enough, the last LED is blinking.
However, Mac OS X 10.2.6 says the battery is charged, although the LED is
still blinking. So, it seems it won't recharge anymore. I rebooted in 9 and
try Battery Reset 2.0 from Apple, but it said that I didn't need it on my
PowerBook model.
Any idea on how to reset the battery? If not, I've seen a few places that
are selling BatteryTech replacement for my Pismo around $120. Any gotcha or
recommendation before I take the plunge?
Thanks in advance!

Re: G3 Series PB (wallstreet) 233 power supply needed

2003-05-30 Thread Gary D. Adams
Smartdisk.com has refurbed ones in stock fairly cheap.

g

If that's the same one as the Pismo (PB FireWire), they are hard to find
right now. I needed one because my (2nd) power supply had died recently
(the one I got after the original Yo-Yo adapter died). Both (IIRC) lasted
about a year and a half (actually, I think the first one may have gone
just within my original warranty). This time, I ended up paying more for
the adapter, about $80 (plus 2nd day shipping), because the places which
showed lower prices were out of stock.

Please post if you find a supply that has them in stock and at a better
price.

All repairs under Applecare or the $300-a-shot fix-all deal are sent
Airborne. They are processed ASAP and sent back. I sent my son's iBook
in on Wednesday at noon and had it back Friday around 10 am. Of course,
I'm just a state away, but that really doesn't matter.

Re: Video not working on Pismo

2002-11-29 Thread Gary D. Adams
George:

This is just a shot in the dark, no pun intended. I understand your
stress. Try two things. First, try resetting the Power Manager (Apple's
directions are as follows:

  1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
  2. Press the reset button on the rear of the computer. The reset
button is located between the external video and modem (RJ-11) ports.
  3. Wait 5 seconds.
  4. Press the Power button to restart the PowerBook computer.

I personally like to unplug the A/C and pull the battery, too,
which is what the iBook requires.

Second: If resetting the Power Manager does not fix it, try zapping the
PRAM (shut the machine off and restart, holding down the
Command-Option-P-R keys).

Just had a Powerboy (one of two) fail. The problem was the firewire port

There are "screens" that you can mount to your laptop--actually

Re: unable to powerup my Wallstreet!

2002-08-15 Thread Gary D. Adams

Have you reset the power manager?

PowerBook G3 Series (M4753)
  1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
  2. Simultaneously press Shift-Fn (function)-Ctrl
(control)-Power.
  3. Wait 5 seconds.
  4. Press the Power button to restart the PowerBook
computer.

PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze Keyboard) (M5343)
  1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
  2. Press the reset button on the rear of the computer.
The reset button is located between the external
  video and modem (RJ-11) ports.
  3. Wait 5 seconds.
  4. Press the Power button to restart the PowerBook
computer.

Note: When you reset the power manager, wait at least 5
seconds before pressing the power button to start up
the computer. If you do not wait at least 5 seconds, the
reset procedure may fail. (If you suspect that the reset
procedure has failed, press the reset button again and wait 5
seconds before pressing the Power button.)

That you see a "Dot-F" network indicates someone in your proximity has a WiFi
network that is password-protected. You need to go to the Airport SetUp
Utility and allow it to configure itself.

Re: reading SE-30 800K disks on Wallstreet?

Andrew:

The problem, if I recall, is not merely a machine-particular
problem--though the newer machines won't read the 800K floppies--it's also a
System-specific problem. I don't recall offhand where the breakdown was, but
I know it was somewhere around 8.6. Your solution is what I do.

Re: G4 For Prismo!!

2002-06-09 Thread Gary D. Adams

Ah, but why did they go out of business? That's the catch. I don't think they
went out of business because they had an inferior product! I bought numerous
Newertech G3 cards--in fact the only two non-Newer G3 cards I bought were two
close-out MetaBox Joes cards. I have never had one single problem with the
Newer cards---as opposed to some of the other upgrade card makers'
cards--double boot Sonnets, etc.

I'd be more than thrilled to look at an upgrade for my Pismo from Newer.

Re: connecting cable modem

2002-06-05 Thread Gary D. Adams

Kate:

You should have numbers for a name server address to be input into the
TCP/IP control panel in the area at the bottom where it says "Name Server
addr.". Make sure where it says "Connect via" that you have "Ethernet"
selected as opposed to Apple GV/56. Where it says "Configure" you probably
want to select "DHCP." Also open the Appletalk control panel and make sure
"Ethernet" is selected. Offhand, that's all I could tell you.

I agree with you, Remy. If they had sold the bare cases, they could habe made a

places for list price, which means, "Mucho dinero."

Re: small dog on the ball

2002-05-24 Thread Gary D. Adams

I appreciate Dawn's response and I appreciate the post on the list. Too many
times things like this happen. Smalldog has always bent over backwards to help me
and I've never had problems -- even with garage sale products. Before Christmas I
had ordered a refurbed LaCie firewire drive from them. It was supposed to arrive
before Christmas but UPS changed the delivery date during the week. I e-mailed
them and e-mail Smalldog. Smalldog e-mailed me back immediately and someone
(Connie?) got on the phone with UPS and had the drive back on the plane and it
was delivered the next day.

I've got a SuperMac C600 at work on the network that does the same thing

have to actually go down to the other office and click the mouse to get it

Got the 250-mb Expansion Bay today. Works great. I'm going to give it to my

2002-04-23 Thread Gary D. Adams

After messing around with this a week, I finally figured out how to do it.
Since the card was made by Lucent/Orinoco, the same people who make Airport
cards, if you use Tomeviewer and extract the three Airport Extensions (Airport
Driver, Airport PC Card and Airport AP Support) and the Airport and Airport
Admin applications, the machine/System (OS 9.1) thinks the card is an Airport
Card. Drop the extensions on the System folder, restart and then configure
Appletalk and TCP/IP for connecting with Airport. Worked like a charm.

I thought of that after I fired that off. I'm not sure. You can try and see.
Failing that (I'm new to PBs, so this is a shot in the dark), if it's
Firewire you can start up in firewire mode and if it's SCSI you could start
up in SCSI mode (of course, you'd have to have the requisite cables).
