Re: iBook as Desktop

2006-02-15 Thread John Slavin
I you're happy with computer power and speed, I'd buy a nice monitor
and an external keyboard and mouse. Then when you later upgrade,
you'll be good to go with a nice monitor, or perhaps a monitor for
spanning.

QuickSilver 733 with Apple's 17 LCD. I particularly love that

In setting up another work desk in another room of the house, I
could try using the iBook, or I could buy a new iMac. I will be
working (or playing) hours at a time, sometimes all day with meal

genealogy Reunion software.

Is anybody here happy with using their iBooks or small screen
PowerBooks as desktop machines? Do you hook up an extra keyboard

larger monitor? Elevate the laptop on a stand?

Any helpful hints welcome! Oh, has anyone tried using a laptop
like this and found it best to move on to a conventional desktop
or tower/monitor setup?

Al,

I saved up my pennies and bought the same iBook you have last
October. I have a gigE dual 450 G4 that used to be my main
machine, but now this iBook is it. The G4 is still in the same
place on my desk but is now acting as a server for the most part.
I love the portability of this iBook, I use it everywhere in the
house, I even put it on the book holder of my exercise bike and do
a little web surfing while riding the bike. I also find it nice to
have while waiting for my kids at the different lessons I take
them to all week. I love this iBook, it has replaced my desktop
100%. I do like having everything I do on this iBook, I think that
is part of the draw, it would be hard to have some things on this
and some things on a desktop. I guess it all comes down to
personal preference and how you work.

Now, you did say you could buy a new iMac and set it up, I have to
admit, if I had the cash on hand I might buy a new iMac and
replace the old beige G3 we have in our kitchen. :)

take care,
Kevin Avery

I use my G4 iBook as my main computer. I'm a heavy user often on my
'book 10+ hrs a day, but my son brought his new G5 iMac home over
winter break. There's no comparison. The iMac is awesome. If I
had to choose one it would be the iMac. The screen, the speed.
You'll be much more productive on it.

Also make sure your screen is open more than 90 degrees. A white

opening the screen a little farther addresses this issue.

Use iTunes to import (rip) your CDs. iTunes will automatically send

In fact, after all my testing, I still run it in the Menu bar.

Re: Firewire horrors

2006-01-19 Thread John Siple

Bruce,

Try altering the jumpers on the drives. If you can't get them to talk
jumpering them to Master, try cable select. or vice versa. I rather
doubt setting any of the drives to Slave will help, but you could try
that too.

Three things to try before you nuke and install.

1. Use 'Preferential Treatment' to check your preference files.
2. Try Archive/Install without keeping network/user settings.
3. install 'AppleJack' and run it at startup. It loads in safe
mode, follow instructions for use.

both apps can be found at www.versiontracker.com.

I use SlimBatteryMonitor, it loads a menu icon that can be color

Re: guidance sought on keeping home synched between Powerbook and Desktop Mac

2006-01-17 Thread John Siple
I've been wrestling with this for a few months now and found that some things
work and some don't.

I don't think you can keep your entire home directory identical on the two
machines using iSync.

ISync in 10.4 will do a good job of keeping your iCal data in step, and works
well with the address book. But there are some oddities when syncing mail,
particularly with multiple accounts that get frequently manipulated. Certain
mail messages seem only to appear on one machine, and copies of outgoing
messages sometimes only remain on the machine they were sent on. Because I'm
using two POP accounts and one DotMac account I get some behaviors I haven't
been able to figure out. There are many combinations with each account on both
machines and on the DotMac account up on the server.

And one other small problem is that I would really like to keep some of my
accounting files synchronized between desktop and laptop but haven't found a
way to do that gracefully. I keep the files on a USB flash drive sometimes, but
that's a fragile system with a chance of lost data. I don't entirely trust
flash drives, at least not for data I can't replace.

Throw in a Palm device and things get even more complicated. Palms synchronize
using a special iSync conduit that writes calendar events to iCal and addresses
to Address on the Mac, but puts the palm notes in the Palm desktop application,
which is necessary for synching even when you're using iCal for your calendar.
Palm suggests users only synchronize with one Mac. I can't imagine what can
happen when a Palm files gets changed, the Palm gets synchronized to Mac A, Mac
A gets synchronized to DotMac on the Mac server. Mac B then gets synchronized
via DotMac with the Mac server and the Palm device gets hooked up to Mac B. Oh,
and I think only later versions of Tiger will do the Palm dance. I don't think
Panther's iSync can do Palms.

The head spins with the possibilities.

My final solution is to have my Palm only talk to the laptop, and to do my
e-mail and accounting only on the laptop. Then I sync the laptop with DotMac.
My desktop Mac just reads the files on DotMac and I avoid making changes there.
It's not an elegant system.

If a list member out there has a cleaner application to do this sort of thing I
hope the solution gets posted.

iWeb vs. HomePage

2006-01-16 Thread John Bertram
Haven't purchased iLife '06 yet, but have iLife '05 as well as a .Mac
account.

Am still trying to get a sense of whether iWeb is a replacement for,
an alternative to, or a partner with, the HomePage function of .Mac.

In other words, is iWeb basically a more full-featured version 2 of
HomePage, but one that can be used independently of a .Mac account?
And were I to purchase iLife '06, and use it with my .Mac account,
would my existing HomePage sites somehow get merged in with any new
sites I created using iWeb, or would I need to continue to use
HomePage to update and edit those existing sites?

Would also enjoy hearing (if all this isn't too far OT), which of
HomePage's many limitations have been improved upon in iWeb.

Thanks,

John Bertram

Re: security re: file sharing/networks

2006-01-15 Thread John Siple
Indeed. Aber's neighbor seems to think she's entitled to use the
connection. That's rude.

There might be other options though. I heard a friend mention that he
had some router setting that allowed him to not broadcast the SSID. I
wasn't too interested at the time so I didn't ask what brand of
router he was using. But this capability would be a clean solution to
the nosey neighbor and still allow Amber to use her own wireless
systems, which she ought to be able to do.

Masking the SSID might be the only way to solve the intrusion without
making everyone uncomfortable.

There are also some directional antenna setups that limit
transmission in one axis to amplify it in another. But why she should
have to spend money to solve this rudeness is beyond me.

Hard to live with a neighbor like that though.

Have I done some signal sniffing? Sure, I'll bet we all have, just to

tracked down the person who had the open signal in my area and advised

And maybe my ISP will come after me some day. But as long as there's
a marketplace out there I can drop them. The reality of the
marketplace is that no ISP is going to find it worthwhile to chase
down it's subscribers who don't encrypt. They want more customers,
not fewer.

For a prime example of what's really happening take a war drive
through a college campus. You'll find more open and encrypted
networks than your screen can scroll through. If service providers
wanted to hunt down malefactors they could do it easily. So far the
only example of a theft of services trial was the result of a guy who
noticed that there was a neighbor parked in front of his house all
the time and when the home owner asked him to stop he didn't. So the
homeowner called the cops.

It's a bit like the laws about copyright infringement on music CDs.
Is there anyone out there who hasn't burned a music CD for a friend
or relative? Like the service thing I much prefer paying for my music
and I like having the real thing when it's a bit of art I really
enjoy. I even like the idea that I'm sending money to the artist.
Allows him to keep making music. But the idea of copy protection for
CDs is just laughable. Nobody listens, not the industry and not the
consumers. Even been through Camden Yard in London? They actually
sell green discs in public and nobody stops them.

OT: the long arm of the law

2006-01-14 Thread John Siple

So let's quit being paranoid and let some common sense prevail.

Here here.

The law is a very flexible thing folks. If all the laws were strictly
enforced this country would come to a screeching halt. The
underground economy alone is huge. None of those folks on craigslist
are paying their state sales taxes on items sold. Cars speed. My
neighbors make more noise than is legal and throw their McNuggets
wrappers on the street. Some of them do anyway.

Legal is a joke. Money and power is king. Got money and power and you
can use the legal system to get more of both. But as a practical
matter all us little people can and do, and will forever be borrowing
on the airwaves. The idea of always obeying all the laws seems to me
an impossible ideal. I'm not a strict relativist but I do believe
that large corporations will always be using the law to squeeze money
out of the general population, and the jails and courts will be full
of poor people.

For the ultimate example of legal absurdity just take our president,
who does anything he wants in the name of national security. No
warrants necessary. Don't need to tell you all what I'm doing. I'll
just sign a bill with a little excuse me paragraph at the end and
call my acts legal. Torture's fine. The very idea of Presidential
Signing Statements is strictly illegal, against the terms of the
Constitution. The executive branch of our government is not empowered
to either interpret the laws nor write them. But ithese signing
statements are tacked onto bills because there's nobody out there to
stop it. If you support him you think it's not illegal. If you oppose
him you want to see the law stop what's being done. The law itself
just sort of floats on the lumpy shoulders of police and judges and
sometimes legislators. Laws are rules made by men for men's purposes.
They have less than nothing to do with morality. Our broadband habits
are harmless compared to most of what is inflicted on the poor in the
name of the law.

Ok, Ok I'm sorry. This isn't a forum for anarchy. Yet there are some
questions of social contract that peek in on us when we're out there
with our portable wireless machines.

well with input from my receiver/amplifier (I think it wouldn't work

Re: Wireless router that handles AppleTalk

2006-01-13 Thread John Siple
There are a few considerations here. I've thought about this a bit. I
have a neighbor who is running an unencrypted network. I sometimes
log on to see if network problems are because of my ISP or because of
my hardware. Mostly my connection is handier so I use mine. I also
have an unencrypted network. She could log onto mine if her ISP gets
goofy. I don't think she knows that.

But the legalities of exactly who owns bandwidth are undefined. For
instance let's say that I pay an outrageous fee for my connection,
which I do, but I need to go on a little trip and while visiting
relatives I find an unencrypted access point that connects to my
original comcast ISP. Am I stealing bandwidth to use it? I would be
doing the same stuff at home but ...

And what is the situation of my own home use? I have 4 Macs and a
printer all clawing their way to my router. Sometimes, like during
Christmas when my girls are home with their own laptops, I have five.
It's all my own family. I still pay rent for all these kids. Why
shouldn't they be able to use my WAN the way they can use the heat
inside my house? And why should the woman next door, who has one,
maybe two computers and no family be paying the same rate I pay? Is
she getting ripped off? I kind of think so.

I have also gone down the block to a free internet zone sponsored by
the city and connected there. Sometimes I go to the library and they
have open connections. Is it somehow unfair use that my neighbor
can't take her PC downtown and connect with it? She pays the same
taxes I pay.

I find it all a bit fuzzy. I leave my network open and my firewall
up and watch my router lights.

I know someone who borrows her neighbor's wireless connection for
free. He knows about it. She admits it would be better if she got her
own. And the real disadvantage is that the borrower is at a serious
disadvantage because the wireless net owner has no particular
obligation to keep the network up. Sometimes it crashes and the owner
doesn't care because he's out of town. The borrower has no way to fix
it. Tough luck. I wouldn't want that kind of an arrangement even if
it were free.

Your neighbor isn't going to get access to your machine. You could
make her life much more miserable than she could make yours. If you
are getting upset with this person why not open your connection
(unencrypt it), but then close it down during times when you see her
connected. Watch your wireless light on the router. Pretend you have
no idea what's going on but just flip the switch now and then. Or go
into the config screens and disable the wireless network that way so
that you can stay connected over wires. You could really drive up her
stress levels and she would probably go out and buy her own service
just for the comfort of being able to control it.

Oh there are just sooo many annoying things you could do to this
person. Change your SSID to a racial slur. Change it to something
that pokes her politics. Change it to a number, then make it
invisible. You could have her begging for a cable company to charge
her an installation fee.

Good barbwire fences make good neighbors ya'know.

At any rate don't let this person raise your own stress levels one
tiny tick. Not worth it. You da boss. Having that Mac gives you the
big stick.

pulled up both Interpol and Timbuktu and they both showed AppleTalk
stuff too. And Timbuktu actually worked.

My wireless router is a Motorola WR850G model. It's fairly
current. So if you are looking for something that will do AppleTalk
check it out. I was rather particular when I went looking for this
router, it has quite a few features that are rare, including
support for other routers (IPNetRouter providing a MacIP
connection). It is a good router and today it turns out it's even
better. It's an 802.11g router and connectivity is quite good.

I bought it at a Target store for around $60.

Have you tried just resetting the router? This may help if you bought
it used. Usually there's a little button for that somewhere.

If resetting it doesn't work you should go through the configuration
screens to make sure it's not set to have a fixed IP address and that
it isn't blocking connections via mac address or connection speed or
any of the many ways wireless routers have to block intrusive
connections. You may be able to do this if you don't have the
original manual by just typing 192.168.1.1 in the URL field of
Safari while connected via an ethernet cable. That used to be the
default ID of Linksys routers. The default password was just linksys,
no caps. the default user name was blank (no name).

I suspect they are just catering to the rubes that need a little
picture to assure them that the product works with what they are
running. I've yet to see a little hardware box with a Linux character
on it but networking hardware would be perfectly happy there. So I
think it could actually be a point of personal pride that the routers
I buy don't need to be sold to folks who need pictures of their OS to
prove compatibility.

At any rate the works with tags on hardware are little more than
stupidity honey. I've even seen mice and keyboards with little
Windows flags on them that care not a jot what OS they're talking
to. But there are surely some manufacturers who go the extra
distance to invite Mac users to the table. Buffalo does that, as does
LaCie.

And I think I've seen more fried routers than any other type of
hardware except perhaps hard drives or laptop screens. Routers get
hot for some reason. They tend to break.

Re: OT: Mac mini slowing down...

2005-12-19 Thread John Siple

Hi Caleb,

I have a mini and a G4 iBook and the mini runs faster than the book.
There is indeed only one RAM slot and it's hard to get to. But more
RAM would help.

I suspect there are accumulated cache files that could be fouling
things us. If he's using Tiger then those cron jobs get run at
startup. But MacJanitor might be useful if he's running Panther.

I highly recommend Applejack if you're running Tiger. It seems to
fix everything, though it tends to make people nervous. It runs as a
Unix script on startup if you start in the single-user mode.

Here's what you do.
Go here and get the installer for Applejack 1.4.1. It's a disk image.
http://applejack.sourceforge.net/

Install it.

Start up in single-user by holding down command-S.

You'll get the command line screen. Type [applejack] (no brackets)
and hit return.

Watch the lovely lines scroll by. Do not be impatient. Some of the
tasks take a bit of time.

When it's all done restart the Mini. It may take longer than usual to
start up and to start the finder. Don't worry. This is normal.

Much should be improved. What's not fixed is wither due to some
background tasks which others on the list have walked through, or
just the small amount of RAM.

Best,

John

Re: G4-iBook w/o OS

2005-12-09 Thread John Siple
I have a G4 iBook and got new for a discount because it only has a CD
drive. That was all I wanted really. The seller, Small Dog, sold it
as new old stock and provided the OS. You should know that if you
find a G4 without a DVD drive you'll have to specify that your OS
install disks have to be CD. Tiger is available on CDs from Apple but
the default medium for Tiger is DVD. In fact if you bought Tiger on a
DVD you can send the DVD to Apple and they'll sell you the CD version
for I think $15 or so.

eBay-ers will probably bid the price of that G4 way over $400. I've
also run into sneaky stuff like little extra charges because the
sellers complain that they are just paying too much for PayPal. I
find eBay completely odious. But you may find really good deals via
DealMac, where you can sign up for alerts on low prices for G4 iBooks.

Also remember that a new iBook comes not only with an OS, but with
other bundled applications that aren't part of the OS installation.
So when comparing you may find that the loss of things like
Appleworks or Quicken may factor into your cost analysis.

Caveat emptor.

John

G4 iBooks will require Panther or better. It will not boot into any
version of 9. Just buy the retail CD's for Panther or DVD for Tiger,
boot with the C key held down. Nothing more to it than that.
-Dylan

THANK YOU Dylan. I didn't know about the C key. That sounds
simple enough!

Laurent Daudelin at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 12/9/05

Depending on the model of iBook, it may or may not boot from that
OS 9.1 CD.
Any Macintosh will be able to boot from an appropriate system
install CD.
The CD has a version of the OS so that the Mac can boot from it.
The only
gotcha is to make sure that the system install CD you have is
appropriate

for the specific model of Mac you're planning to use it with.
-Laurent.

That sounds easy enough to figure out by checking some specs at
everymac or
apple, which I did, and so I'm thinking OS9 would NOT work on the
G4/800mhz,
first edition. I never had a mac w/No OS, so wasn't sure. Thanks
again.

Krow Magnum at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 12/9/05 10:47 AM
First, the price of the iBook should be discounted because there
is no

original CD or OS loaded on the iBook. It should be sold with the
original OS and include the CD's but that does not happen all the
time

so you will be responsible to get a licensed OS for it.

Yes, thanks. It is discounted, or was, I should say, because I
just got
email to my query and in their ad/mac description it had said at
the bottom

of the page Buy Now for $400 but he just wrote me to say that was a
mistake, as it was supposed to say that bidding STARTS at $400. I
thought
it was too good to be true, lol. Of course he said if no one bids
on it he

would gladly sell it for the $400.

I would not buy one that way personally because there could be
problems you will not know about until it's got an OS on it. Unless
you know the seller personally of course, or can return it if
there is

a problem.

Thanks for that advice. I didn't think about the fact there COULD be
problems unknown UNTIL an OS was put on it. And no, I don't know
the people
but they are a power seller at ebay with refurbs and 30-day
warranty only.

Many of the Mac specific install CD's like the one you have may not
boot and install on any other specific Mac. So your OS 9 CD from
your

iBook may or may not work. Since it is an iBook CD your chances are
better that it will work. You will find out when you boot from
the CD

and do the install process whether or not it will work for that
particular iBook. If you have access to the iBook try booting from
your CD by starting it or restarting it with the CD in the iBook
while

holding down the C key.

I love that C key tip, thanks! I wish I had access to it to try it
out in
advance but not yet and may not even end up with it if the bidding
doesn't

work out.

Installing an OS is as simple as booting from the CD with the C
key

and following the installer instructions. It's easy to do. I would
suggest buying a retail version of OS 10.3 from the swaplist or eBay
as soon as possible.

Yes, thanks, I already zeroed in on two good deals at ebay for the
10.4/Tiger but I won't need them if I don't get the G4-without-OS.

Your G3 iBook can also run OS 10.3 with enough RAM and it would
be a much

better Mac'n experience than OS 9.1 ever was.

I just don't think these 6gig'er clamshells are enough HD memory. I
have
hardly anything on this current G3 clamshell (IE-OE-MS Office 98,
etc.) and
it's slow as molasses and bogs down, etc. which is why I was
looking for a
newer model with more mhz and more ram and mucho bigger HD. Also
it's awful

Re: Safari problem ?

2005-12-04 Thread John Siple

Amber,
Since this is both a Mac and a Safari problem I suspect the keyboard
input. Safari is cooperative with various language inputs. In fact
it's really neat that us Mac users can set our whole operating system
displays to read and write in Japanese or German or any number of
other alphabets.

Go to the International prefs panel and check that you have set your
input for U.S., not U.S. Extended in the input section. Review other
input settings like the order of language preferences. You might want
to uncheck foreign languages except U.S. and see if that helps with
the password problems.

Then go to the appearance preferences in Safari and make sure you
have checked Western ISO as your default encoding scheme.

Things change.

Re: USBcam for 10.4/1.5GHz

2005-12-01 Thread john slavin
The icecam doesn't work too bad. If it's like the one I have, it's
pretty unwieldy and I end up clamping it to the top of my screen with a
big rubber band. It's also manual focus. And it doesn't contain a
mic. Since it's USB, I suspect it has considerably fewer frames per
second than say the iSight. However, knowing these limitations, it's
still not a bad cheap alternative to the iSight. Also, as with many of
these cameras, it performs poorly in low light conditions. It helps a
lot to have a light facing you.

Howdy,

If you can wait a couple of weeks (I teach and am in seminary, and will
be up to my eyebrows in work for both until the 16th), I have a DVD
module for the Wallstreet you can have for free. Sorry, I don't have
the required pcmia card you need with it to watch DVD videos, but it
works just ducky for reading CD or DVD format software. I bought it for
a project some time ago, but ended up getting a Pismo, which has a
completely different drive bay.

If you want it, let me know your address, and I'll send it to you.

What are my options now that I need to purchase a new
drive? I'd rather buy a new drive with perhaps the
capacity to burn CDs if the price is about the same.

Of course, if someone on the list really wants an
Apple floppy drive for their Wallstreet I'd consider a

Re: used Apple Laptops

2005-11-26 Thread John Siple
I have two white ibooks, one a G3 500 and the other a G4 1gig. I love
them to bits. I replaced the video cable on the old one, which is how
it came to be mine in the first place.

But I treat my little lalptop like it's made of egg shells. It goes
nowhere without it's little padded case. I don't type and eat. I
don't leave it where it might fall and I never leave it in the car. I
think laptops are generally rather fragile things.

I have heard some stories of bad boards and some systemic problems
but the two I've had (the 500 is now with my daughter in Chicago) are
quite reliable.

That said I think that the days of the SE/30 and it's longevity are
gone. I still have three compact Macs that run like champs. New PRAM
battery every three years and that's it. Hardware, and particularly
laptops, just don't run that way these days. So eventually what you
get is going to die. So my advice is to go ahead and get a relatively
new iBook, but back it up fastidiously.

Then I bought a severely upgraded wallstreet, now a

both the size and the heat factor. As a writer, I feel
distracted by the heat coming up through my fingers.

I have heard the Pismos run much cooler.

I want small size, battery longevity, cool running,
wireless ability (doesn't have to be built-in as long
as I can add on).

I love those 12 white iBooks and would buy a used one
of those in a heartbeat, except I keep running into
people who are having repair nightmares with them.

Do pismos really run a lot cooler than wallstreets?

Are the white iBooks really just waiting to die? I
just don't want to spend $350-$450 on a 12 iBook and
have the logic board go after a few months.

Would like to hear comments from any other users on

Re: can't boot off disk?

2005-11-25 Thread John Siple
I would try booting into single user (hold command-s while starting
up) and run through the file system check (sbin/fsck -y) and see if
that fixes it. After it's run type reboot and it should restart.

It's possible you have a bad CD drive and the hardware test routine
didn't catch it.

Booting it up slowly brings us to the question-mark folder-icon. I've
run the hardware check disc that came with the iBook and everything
checks out fine. When I attempt to start off a system CD I get the
slash-circle icon, it does not see the system CD (I tried both the
Tiger CD and an old Jaguar one, I no longer have the Panther CD). I
also tried to start it in FW target mode from my PowerBook 1.25, but
nothing happened- iBook whirred a bit, no screen, no disc showing up
on the Powerbook finder.

I'd recently installed Tiger onto the iBook, on top of Panther. Tiger
worked OK but slow (256 MB RAM) for a couple of days before this
problem.

So I figure the HD is dead, buut why can't it boot off a system CD?!

Thanks!

Only thing I can toss in is that I use a iBook G3/600 under 10.2.8
and have no video problem. You may need to do an Archive and
Install then the upgrade. It's possible something got corrupted in
10.2 which didn't have any effect until the 10.2.8 upgrade.

Re: mac to windows printing

2005-11-15 Thread John Siple
The PC has to have some kind of printer sharing ability. Macs can do
this, but I don't know about PCs, particularly PCs sharing their USB
printers with Macs.

One way I would approach it would be to attach the printer to the Mac
and turn on printer sharing. This, of course, would prevent printing
when the Mac isn't hooked into the network. But with the network set
up as you describe any printer sharing has to be done in the PC
universe and I don't know much about that part of the cosmos.

If you don't print much you could always just plug the printer into
your USB port on the Pismo when you need to print.

Re: Wireless network problem - help!

I agree with Clark. It's probably a DHCP problem.

Go to the NETWORK system prefs panel
Show Airport
Click TCP/IP and make sure the setting is Using DHCP not Using
DHCP with manual address.

You might also take a look at MacStumbler if you do any war driving
at all. It gives you a good idea what's in the air.

Best guess is you aren't getting a DHCP lease. Open the Network
Preference Pane and see what IP address your Airport interface is
getting. If it is 169.254.x.x that is what is known as Self
Assigned (the Network Preference Pane will refer to it as such).
It means your Mac couldn't get a DHCP address from a server and
made up it's own address which is usually used with ad hoc networks.

the OSX wireless/ open WAP thing is partly broken as far as I can
tell. Both at my workplace and at the hospital where I was spending
many hours a few months back, I could get online fine with any laptop
except the OSX powerbook.

I could get an IP, signal fine, see the SSID of the open network,
etc. but trying to ping anywhere let alone DNS lookups gav eno route
to host.

Apple support ('book was new) was no help, local admins said yup for
whatever reason OS X can't get online, we have no ideas, but would
like it to work.

I thought perhaps I had an idea of the problem- the hospital had 2
open networks named PUBLIC but on 2 channels, I thought perhaps
things were confused on the Mac due to that (though my Clie UX-50,
Win98, WinXP, and Newton Messagepad were fine (I had lots of time and
trips to work on this :) but the work one, DORA is open and the
only one around.

I gave up. Macs just don't work as well as windows machines
sometimes. I know my karma will take a pummelling but that's the data.

Daughter had a serious connection problem in her dorm at the

Her symptoms were similar to yours, ability to see wireless but
inability to log in using a WEP password she knew was good, ability
to connect via unencrypted access points but not reliably, ability to

This baffles me because I've never had trouble connecting to anything

Re: Mail.app and Keychain

2005-11-07 Thread John Siple
Used to happen a lot on my Comcast mail account, but it hasn't
cropped up for a few weeks now. I always found that if I reset my
DHCP addresses by shutting down everything from the cable modem to my
eyeballs it cleared up. I also tried deleting some of the keychain
passwords but that didn't seem to provide a permanent fix.

So is everyone who suffers from this mailzheimers syndrome running on
a home network with some kind of DHCP router? Mine is a wireless/
wired LAN with four Macs on it. I suspect networking gremlins if all
the sufferers are on networks.

Re: Mail.app and Keychain

Its a mail server problem. If mail can't connect to the server it
asks for your email password again. It assumes that you entered it
incorrectly or it has changed since the last connection. Ignore it
and it will reuse the original one on the next mail check.

Re: Airport problem with 10.4.3

2005-11-03 Thread John McGibney

Fairly common complaint for most upgrades. Try this:
1 access your base station via ethernet.
2 change the channel on the base station.
3 try and connect via your airport card.

This should solve the problem. I usually fixed the problem in the
past for most people that lost the connection after an upgrade.

On Nov 3, 2005, at 5:03 AM, Luis Sequeira wrote:

After upgrading to 10.4.3, I lost the ability to connect to my Base
Station.
I noticed that shortly after the release of 10.4.3, there was an
update for Airport and installed it, but it made no difference.

Also, like other people, I received a message about airport needing
access to my keychain. I thought nothing of it, because it seemed
quite normal, since there was a new version of the Airport
software, and authorized it.

I believe there is something wrong with the new Airport software
and would like to know if more people are having the same problem.

I workaround for similar cases has been to grab the appropriate
file from a previous version and substitute for the problematic
one, so I would appreciate help in determining which file(s) might
be needed. I do have another mac still running 10.4.2, so I migth
grab the file from it (alas, this other mac - a BW - does not have
Airport, so I cannot use it for testing the Base Station).

I'm on digest, so on replying to the list I'd appreciate if you
could cc: me.

Re: Airport Card Causing Fritz? Is it Possible? Fixes?

2005-11-02 Thread John Siple

$75 X 40 = $3,000 = new iBook + Used Pismo + $1,000

which still puts you ahead of the game.

Unless you get the new iBook and test another bad Airport card in it and
KKKRAaaPowwie!

That would be an unfortunate situation.

Have you tried any Apple hardware tests on your iBook, or a restore?
You're in my neighborhood and we could try to recover your iBook with
some boot disks I have here if you want. I'm in 98118, down by Sayers

Re: Airport Card Causing Fritz? Is it Possible? Fixes?

So here's the deal: A friend of mine in the recycling industry
handed me a
pile of 40 original Airport cards. He said I could test and sell
them to my
favorite listers, then keep some of the proceeds toward future buys.
Fair

enough.

I tested 12 of them with success, first in a nice 14 iBook I have,
then in
my beloved Pismo. All worked well. Then on the--yes--the THIRTEENTH
card,
the iBook would not boot. I pulled the card, and it still would not
boot.
Hmmm, I grumbled, I hate these iBooks. Everyone I ever had goes
kapop, and

are very tough to fix. So I moved the card over to the Pismo, not
suspecting the card could be causing anything other than a hiccup,
and boom,
the Pismo won't boot. I try pulling the card, pulling ram, replacing
the

daughtercard, zapping PM, PRam, etc. Nothing.

AGH!

Anyone ever hear of this? Any ideas as to what's wrong with the
books and

how to fix them?

What did I do wrong? I know the Airport card works, as I am using

Absolutely.

The duo adapters also run clamshell ibooks.

[G-Books] PowerBoost for iChat

2005-10-26 Thread John Roberts

Only slightly off-topic

I just downloaded a program (PowerBoost) that is supposed to let
any Mac G4 host a multiperson video chat using iChat AV without the
G5 requirement. It is done by the same group that did the
iChatUSBCAm that I used successfully on my PB. It's $8 shareware
and I will try out the demo when we can get several together for a
chat.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28226#screenshots

Tried this today and it works (I have a 400MHz Powerbook G4).

The Pioneer 110 drive is down to about $50 from time to time.

Surely, for about the same price, you could get a brand new CDRW
module?

Given the track record of those pismo drives, I'd think twice about
paying even $70 for a refurbished one.

LOL!

A brand-new, compatible super drive, which includes two-layer
writing,

can be had for $105 or a tad more.

None will accept the old bezel, though.

Wireless for Pismo to Airport Xtreme base

2005-10-18 Thread John W. Travis, MD (Jack)
What kind of card is best/compatible for a Pismo (Panther) to connect to an
Airport Xtreme base? I've heard the original airport cards for the pismo are
expensive so I'm hoping a less expensive and faster alternative is available
for its slot.

Re: router not working after Apple update

2005-10-18 Thread John Siple
You might try connecting via a wire directly to the router and
checking the settings. The DI-514 used the IP address of 192.168.0.1
and the 524 probably uses the same one. But run through the LAN
settings and see if by chance you have limited the wireless to some
specific protocol or fixed IP or something. Since you can connect
when you're directly connected to the modem it's clear that your
modem can talk to the universe so the next step is to make sure your
wireless router leg can talk to your PB. So go through all the
screens in the router setup panels.

I assume here you've done this before so you know if you have changed
the password or such. If you need to reset it there's probably a
little button on the back. I don't have the manual on this machine so
I can't look up these things so I need to work from the 514 manual.
Anyway if you have trouble get back to me and maybe we can work
through the setup screens.

I use AIM for instant messaging and use the name stolengreenery.

But there shouldn't be anything in 10.4.2 that would prevent talking
to that router via airport.

Hi there,

I am hoping that somebody here might be able to help me out with
this. I have a wireless D-Link DI-524 router and a cable modem.
For several months, I have had absolutely no trouble with this
router and have been able to move freely around my apartment with my
PB (15 AL 1.25 ghz) and keep a solid connection.

However, I upgraded to 10.4.2 the other day and since then, have
not been able to re-establish the connection at all. I have tried
everything - unplugging both router and cable modem, checking the
settings on both, checking airport etc. Everything seems the same
but I still can't get the router to work and am now tied to the desk
whenever I want to use the net.

It's really frustrating. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to
resolve this ?

Re: Problem with Superdrive

blank or not, Audio, whatever). For all practical purposes, my PB

What I've tried: restart the machine, log in as a different user,
shutdown, repair permissions. I also downgraded the firmware (I
have been using the unofficial firmware update that has given me
16x CD, 2xDVD-R and 1x-DVD-RW for 2 years, without any problem)
back to the original version.

Nothing has worked, so far. I thinking that this is perhaps a
mechanical problem. I welcome any and all suggestions.

I would gladly use this as an excuse for putting one of the newer

Ok, none of the ones I've ever seen had one, whereas they're pretty

internal zip drives, as it was meant to have two optical drives

spilled water

2005-10-12 Thread John Slavin

Hello all:

My niece called me today. Her daughter, a freshman in college
spilled a soda on her keyboard. The tech support people said, of
course, that it was not covered by applecare and will cost several
hundred dollars to replace the motherboard, which they say was
fried. I told her to check her homeowners insurance, but I don't
think she has any other option. Am I missing anything?

If you have a second machine with firewire boot the PowerBook in
Firewire mode (hold T key). This will allow you to connect to another
machine via firewire cable. The powerbook will show up on the other
machine as a firewire hard drive. Hopefully you will be able to
transfer your important files.

You could also try fixing the drive using TechTool Pro, DiskWarrior
or Apple's Disk utility from the second machine while the two are
connected.

Re: 12 Powerbook G4: an AppleCare and AppleStore assesment

2005-10-09 Thread John Siple
Sorry you've had a bad run at the Apple world, both from weak
hardware and blundering support. My own experience with the genius
bar and warranty service has been more positive but I'm in Seattle
and I had a simpler problem.

I find the Apple support a little like some kind of military
procedure. One must first go through step A, which is usually going
through a troubleshooting phase with someone in India to be certain
it isn't a silly user error or something correctable via standard
software utilities, and at the end of that Apple gives out a number.

The Indian guy, or whatever, logs this number and the troubleshooting
steps he went through so that the next guy in the process doesn't
need to repeat it all. In the end there is often some kind of
warranty replacement, which can involve being deprived of your
machine for a week or two, but rarely any extensive data retrieval or
tedious hunt for cheaper ways to fix things or find out why they went
bad.

John was right in suggesting the firewire boot as a possible way to
get some data back. Disk Warrior is also very handy there. But actual
data recovery, which is the kind of thing they do in clean rooms with
drives that have gone to the bottom of the Holiday Inn swimming pool,
that's an expensive proposition. It usually involves opening the
drive itself and reading each sector and trying to reassemble the
data into files that can be read. Expect to pay as much as your iBook
cost for this.

I rather like taking stuff apart, but that's not everyone's cup of
tea. So I guess I don't have as many problems with Apple. I also kind
of expect life to toss a turd in my general direction, deprive me of
use of something or rob me regularly, so I'm not floored when I get a
flat tire or my iPod dies. It's a philosophical position. Life offers
very few guarantees, so when any company agrees to fix it's stuff I'm
pleasantly surprised.

Hope that firewire boot helps somewhat.

request for help:

1. Powerbook died and won't go beyond a grey backlit screen on startup
2. took it to Gravis in Cologne, Germany (great place!, competent,
helpful 'Apple Service Provider' like we used to have here). They
put in

a system disk and confirmed my suspicion that the Hard Drive has died
(it had been getting progressively slower on startup).
3. After return home this week I went to the local Apple Store and
they

informed me I needed to get an appointment to speak to a genius and
that the genius bar was closed for the day (this was Friday night).
4. I called 1-800-APL-CARE on Saturday morning (one: it hung up on me
after about 5 mins of the 8 mins announced (max) wait time; two: after
15 minutes waittime of 10 mins announced (max) I got Eric, who
requested
I insert a system disk and wouldn't believe the description of
above No.

2.) - I could not find my system disk other than an old X.1 which he
deemed not an option since I was last running X.3.9 ... After my
request
was denied to connect me to a repair dispatch to determine whether
there

is a way to obtain the damaged Hard Drive for Data recovery, I gave up
and decided to go back to the Apple Store.
5. Went to the Apple Store on Saturday AM, signed up for an
appointment

with a genius, got a pager (this alone took 10 to 15 minutes, although
the genius bar was not apparently busy) - the appointment was showing
11:30 (about 1 hour after my arrival), but I got buzzed at 11:10 (most
people are probably not patient enough to wait too long and I was to
find out immediately why:
6. The genius I spoke with mentioned that my only option for data
recovery would be to pay them 150 USD to remove and replace the
damaged
drive after a week where I could have it for data recovery and then
send

it in to Apple for replacement. Asked whether they could not put a new
drive in at that point he informed me that it needed to be an Apple
certified part and they could not obtain that. This is where the story
ends (for now).

Some additional information:
12 PB G4 (bought from Apple refurb), 1 Ghz, 768 MB RAM, Superdrive,
Airport Extreme, unit has been in my possession for about 1.5 years, I

Some general venting: If Apple wants to get out of their low market
share they need to improve their service to what it used to be. Don't
hire arrogant, half-wits as geniusses, and phone line support (the
'genius' actually told me he had gotten yelled at over his comments
before - not that it helped, and I couldn't waste more time or energy
with him ;-). Don't design otherwise beautiful hardware with
components

Re: airport express

2005-10-01 Thread John Siple
Clark is right. When they're set up optimally they latch into the
network like a shark on a dead whale. I've read some router manuals
that suggest setting up your router to be at least five channels
different from strong channels in the area. MacStumbler will tell you
what local channels are being used.

Or perhaps there's just something wrong with the Express. I use non-
Apple routers and have little trouble with network reliability so the
technology is certainly capable of reliable connections.

My Powerbook's performance improved dramatically when I upgraded* my

*An aside: Earlier this summer I had problems that turned out to be a
bad logic board. Before sending it to Apple I tried swapping RAM
cards, which of course didn't work. When I got the computer back from
Apple, I noticed there was only 384MB of RAM, so I realized that I
must have left the old RAM cards in. It's been 3 months now, and I

Re: faxing from my powerbook

2005-09-25 Thread John Siple
Modem selection is via the Fax dialog box. If you can't find the
external modem (You're using an external modem?) then I guess you
have a hardware issue. Why not use the internal modem? We're talking
phone modems here, the internal things that connect to a wall phone
connector via the nice little old-fashioned phone wire. We are not
talking about DSL modems connected via ethernet or router of some
sort. If you have a phone wire from you powerbook connected to the
phone connector on your wall and it's a working phone connection your
Mac should find the connection when you're in the fax dialog box.

You designate this smaller drive as a helper and all the limiting

This limit is a hardware restriction of Old World machines.

Beige and earlier desktops and Wallstreet and earlier laptops have
an 8GB

limitation for the boot partition.

BW and later desktops and Lombard and later laptops have no

for the boot partition.

At least for 10.3, which is what I run on all of these.
