Re: DHCP problems
Laurent, The router may be set to DHCP but are all the Macs set to use DHCP? If they are set up as static that can obviously be the problem. Or, if there is something wrong with the router that may be the problem. I've not heard good things about D-Link in that regard. Check all the settings and let us know. Also, why a switch and a router? --- Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello list. I've been having an annoying problem for the last few weeks. Re: 12.1 in. 1.5ghz powerbook
Matthew, I traded up to a 12 1.5 Ghz PB after my G3 900 iBook broke 3 times in 18 months. I always thought the PBs were over priced for what they were. Was I wrong! I researched the 12 PB after my iBook broke the 2nd time. I decided to give my iBook one more try. Then on the 88th day of the 90 day warranty for the replaced logic board it broke again. Enough was enough! Now that I have my PB I wish I'd gotten earlier! Once thing I like most about the 12 1.5 PB is that the hard drive has a head parking mechanism if the powerbook is dropped. It has a G-force sensor and can tell when it's dropped. If I had to complaints it would be these mild criticisms. A) The bottom gets pretty hot, especially if it's in your lap while the Mac is doing processor intensive things (such as iMovie). B) The battery clocks 3 1/2 to 4 hrs. My iBook was cooler (only a G3) and the battery could do 5 1/2 to 6 hours without sweating it. --- Matthew Dudek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey guys and girls, My old Pismo seems just about ready to be put out to pasture... or at least used as my media PC, and I am trying to figure out the best deal for the money, and something that will also stick around for at least as long as my Pismo has. I have been using CCC for some time with great success. However, the latest version, 2.3 is not compatible with Tiger 10.4. Re: best photo organizer
I found this happened to me as well. It happens when you use iPhoto's built in burn function. It's actually burning an iPhoto library to be imported into another iPhoto. You can get around this by selecting the pics you want and then dragging them on to the CD. Re: macros
I had an iBook G3 900 for 18 months. Within that 18 months it broke THREE times. Logic board each time. It was under the video card recall the first time. The second time I had to pay the full cost of the repair (no AppleCare, $350 flat fee). The logic board died again on the 88th day of the 90 day warranty from the 2nd repair. I got it repaired a third time then sold it! Good riddens. I was really, really, really angry and considered becoming a turncoat and going with a PC laptop. Once the anger cleared and I could think, I got a 12 PB G4 1.5. It is awesome and I wish I'd done it sooner! No more iBooks for me. My wife has a 12 iBook. We'll see what happens. --- Aase [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Claire, Having used OS 9 until New Year's, I am embarrassed to admit that I never used this function (it rings familiar in my ears, so I guess I knew about it, but...)... I would be very interested in hearing about possibilities for doing this under OSX. I will be upgrading to Tiger soon too. I just got my iBook back for the 3rd time, having been without it alltogether for around 4 months, because of that little backlight problem. The last time Apple said that the company that does repairs for them, hadn't replaced all the parts they should have, so they needed one more chance, but their normal practice was that if a computer had not been fixed on 3 tries, the customer should get a new one. Now I got it back, and see they changed the logiboard only, which they did before, so I can't help but wonder, if it will last this time. I also discovered that they screen is separated from it's frame, so it needs to go back. And I really don't feel like letting them have it again, God knows how long it will take, and I am sick and tired of it all. Plus the loaner they finally gave me this last time (after waiting for 3 weeks, never offered me one before), was kind of crappy (pardon my french, but I don't find only working a little in iPhoto with 3-4 pics before it crashes, too much fun)... Well, I mailed the company, and guess I will be calling Apple tomorrow, so we'll see... Hopefully I can soon feel that I can really get going using MY wonderful new iBook, with everything in order and working and learning to enjoy OS X properly (instead of moaning over having to use a mess of a PC or an awful old PB loaner without airport and way too little RAM)... That company has had this iBook more time than I have since I bought it... Oh shoot, now this will probably be too long... Re: Airport Question
Is true that PC card wireless cards are cheaper and easier to find than Airport cards. I too have an Airport in my iBook G3 900. It's important to understand that the protocol used to communicate over a network is TCP/IP and wireless 802.11b/g. These protocols are not platform specific. To give you an idea, let's use my home network as an example. I have a cable modem, Linksys Wireless B router, two Mac desktops running wired to the router; one iBook with Airport, and one Win XP laptop with a Linksys wireless B PC card. The standard of communications wirelessly is 802.11b. The router doesn't care if it's an iBook running OS X or Win XP with any wireless PC card. iBooks don't have a PC card slot, so a PC card wireless card is not an option. There are very few PC cards that do work with Macs. They only work with PowerBooks since they have PC card slots in them. I prefer Linksys over D-link for quality and trouble free usage. When you get the router don't bother running any install programs (probably won't have an installer for Mac anyway) since they are not needed. Each router has a way for the router to be accessed through a web page interface. You'll see directions for that in the manual. This is important because you will want to lock down your wireless network with a WEP to keep folks from using your wireless signal to surf w/o your knowledge. --- Amanda Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All, I'm looking for a wireless card for my G3 icebook. Re: Data Rescue (was iPhoto/iChat Question)
Ah, the old Trash Can trick... I work for a large cable provider and am working with the webmaster updating Macintosh knowledge base articles. I am removing any instances that refer to temporarily putting items in the trash. I used to do it since that's what all the books say to do. To avoid this type of thing happening (imagine the added factor of doing this over the telephone!) I will no longer put items in the trash. In order for a folder to get created/recreated the orignal simply has to be moved from the directory. Creating a new iPhoto library would work just as well if the original had been moved to the desktop. Heck even just renaming it works most of the time (some programs are smart enough to see the folder even after renaming it). The trash is out, no pun Thing is, that left two copies of the iPhoto library in the Pictures folder. I put one in the trash and backed up the other... Then I forgot the other one was in the trash, and a couple of days later, having forgotten I had left the other library in there, I clicked on the trash and chose 'empty trash' out of habit... Needless to say, the new library was the one in the trash... __ Yahoo! Mail Mobile Take Yahoo! Mail with you! Running an OS off that drive, if you could, would be unreasonably slow. Better to perhaps get a larger internal drive. If not that, then a firewire drive. Solves the boot problem and gets you more space. 3. I'd like to run OS X on the machine and was wondering if the 500 MHz cpu would give acceptable performance? I don't do graphics stuff... just some word processing, spreadsheets and listen to an occasional music CD. 500Mhz will do for that. I've run X on a Bondi Blue iMac 233, so I know a G3 500 can do it. Re: Ti 1ghz
Short answer: If a Mac can boot into OS 9 then OS X is not required to be installed on it as well. My G3 900 iBook died and I had it repaired only because I need the ability to boot into OS 9. I create a lot of web documentation for both OSes. I installed 9 first. Got all my 9 apps installed/running and configured. Then installed X. I have run both my iBook and a G4 733 with nothing but OS 9 on the drive. What got confusing is when Apple stopped making Macs that could boot into OS 9 and could only run Classic Mode. In those cases OS 9 was actually installed last, not first. Takes a little getting used to. --- Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: on 09/04/05 21:23, Leslie Burkholder at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The last model of Powerbook that was able to run OS9 not in classic-mode was the G4 Titanium 1ghz. Another way of saying this is that this is the last model that can boot from a version of OS9. I had assumed that because of this I could somehow install *only* OS9 on this machine. Maybe I'm wrong about this. Do I have to install both OS10 and 0S9 in order to be able to boot from OS9? And if both are installed is there some interaction between them even when OS9 is booted? If this PowerBook can boot into OS 9, then you should not need to have OS X installed. You should be able to boot from an OS 9 installation CD, as long as the CD is the commercial version, not an installation CD that was bundled with another Mac. -Laurent. -- __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: Vertical lines on iBook display?
Check your iBook against the serial number range on this page: http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/ It may have a video problem that has been recalled. If it's not that, it will need to be checked out by an Apple Certified tech. --- Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: All of a sudden, the screen on my daughter's iBook, a little more than 6 months old, is now displaying only vertical lines. They fill the entire screen. Starting from the left, there is a blue line of 1 or 2 pixels, then a black of 2 or 3, then a faint red of 1 pixel, then right next to it are 2 green lines, the first one being about 3 or 4 pixels, then a black line of 1 pixel and another green line of 1 pixel. Then, there is a black strip of about 4 or 5 pixels wide and the pattern starts over again with the blue line. The computer otherwise works fine. I did boot it in FireWire target mode to transfer my daughter's home directory on my old Pismo and everything went well. I must say that the pattern was slightly different when booted in target disk mode. I'll be taking it to the nearest Apple store tomorrow but I was wondering if anybody has seen this problem before. Re: Thoughts on a trade
Knowing these things probably would have changed our suggestions as well. I struggled with the same exact problem before I bought my G4 733 QuickSilver. As you can read, I decided on the single processor. As I understand it, a dual processor is only about 1/3 faster than it's actual Mhz rating in OS X (since OS X supports dual processors). For most tasks you'll be better off with the single 733. The only exception would be if you are using a new version of Photoshop and do serious work with it (since it supports mutiple processors as well). I had a BW G3 450 before my 733. I had an ATA controller in it and multiple drives. It worked fine most of the time, but gave me a hassle occasionally. My QuickSilver, however, as given me NO problems at all. I am extremely happy with it. Do yourself a favor and get as much RAM as you can (I maxed mine out to 1.5 and haven't looked back). --- Orlando Mac Geek [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: First off I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to asnwer, just a few additional points of discussion. 1. Portability - While I appreciate everyone saying I should stick with my Ti Powerbook, my mind is already make up to move to desktop. I have a computer at work already and that is pretty much the only other place I use my laptop. For portability I would have to say what I have sucks. I have broken hinges which means I always need to be up against the wall. Also have a battery which only gives me about 30 minutes of use and a lot less if doing anything CPU heavy. One of the main reasons I want to get a desktop is to leave it at home where I can have an FTP server setup and also want to use it as a Tivo type DVR. Another problem as I see it with the Powerbook is a complete lack of upgradability. I can't put in a better video card, can't put in a new CPU. Already maxed out my ram. I am definitly a tinkerer as far as my hardware goes. I enjoy the flexibility that a tower would give me as far as upgradaibility (if that is even a word). 2. My main question - Still have not gotten an answer as far as the performace difference between a dual G4/450 and a single G4/733. The machine will be used mainly for web surfing, e-mail, watching movies, and also host a VERY low usage FTP server. Does anyone have any thoughts which would be better? I recommend trying the cable and iPod on a different Mac. This sounds like a hardware problem and testing like this will be the only way to figure it out. An archive and install is a great way to get a new, clean system on the Mac (ala Clean install of OS 9 days). However, you will encounter serious problems if you don't update the Mac immediately after doing an archive and install. I did this once and tried to open Mail and some other apps they immediately crashed with an unexpected error. The Mail version was at OS 10.3.5. The archive and install put it back to 10.3.0. Once updated, all was well.
