PB12" review

2003-03-04 Thread R. Hannes Niedner
I have a friend of mine who is a Linux (and Windows) user. He is intrigued
by the design and power of the 12'' Powerbook. He asked my opinion on which
PB to by and I like to give him an honest cross section of experiences. I am
a very happy user of the 1GHZ TiBook but have no experience with the new
model.
Thus all users out there please help me to make another happy switcher, even
if this means to recommend him another powerbook than the 12".

Thank you so much/h

I guess you did. It has been reported several times that the internal
battery will only support up to 512MB of Ram when swapping the (external)
battery. I used to have a pismo with one 1GB RAM and hot swapping (in sleep
mode) of the battery resulted in a reboot.

Should the pismo owner opt to upgrade here is how it's done:

Here is also an interesting article:

With the current prices don't waste your money on 256MB but go for at least
an additional 512MB of RAM. People on this list will give you great
recommendations on the best buys.

Re: The 17" PowerBook

2003-01-08 Thread R. Hannes Niedner
Maybe I should have used the optical instead of digital which I think is
still the superior way to connect components of your high end home stereo. I
know a some people that spend quite some money for extension cards (PC and
Mac) to just get this capability.
On the other hand side I did not intent to start a discussion about what
would be the best to source multimedia data such as audio and video but
rather asking for a another feature that would make the Digital Hub complete
for me, in the sense others have asked for USB2. But maybe it is not really
an issue for the majority and that is fine too.

I have not heard someone complaining about the missing digital audio

this no issue (can this be done via firewire ore USB without additional

Redraw problems on TiBook

2002-12-08 Thread R. Hannes Niedner
I have a weird problem. I installed 10.1.5 on a DVI TiBook 800 MHz about 3
months ago and everything was working just fine. Yesterday I installed 10.2
and even after a complete wipe and clean install the gui would show ugly
screen redraw problems, whenever a window is moved. It almost looks like the
kaleidoscope screensaver. I run the Hardware test CD and everything checks
out fine. Can this still be an hardware issue? I don't understand this and
never had such a problem before (10.1.5 pefect/Jaguar clean install
unusable).

Maybe not, the Capsure Card requires a Zoomed Video Port and I believe the

Thanks for the tip.
It worked as good as the other remedies. I strongly believe that there is no
CD in the drive. I just think that the drive died out of the blue with no
indication whatsoever. All measure that would eject a CD are completely
silent, I believe to remember that even with no CD in the drive it would
make a clicking soundnow only silence - I put my ear on the drive ...

I ship it to Apple on Monday - since I bought it less then 6 months ago its
still on warranty (and I have Apple care anyway).

The "tragic" circumstances are that I discovered the drive failure when I
tried to install the Admin Tools to remotely administer an Apple Xserve...
It set out to be a really happy weekend now I am rather pi...d. So Installed
the Jaguar server in the server room and felt like a flight deck engineer on
a carrier :-)

I can't find anything neither right, left, above or under the slot. I am

CDR/DVD drive failure on TiBook

2002-11-22 Thread R. Hannes Niedner
I just noticed that I cannot insert any CD's into my CDR/DVD combo drive.
When I try to insert the CD it meet a solid resistance at the point where
usually the automatic pull-in starts. It work perfectly until to day and I
inserted and ejected the last CD yesterday without noticing anything
strange. I done nothing extraordinary to the Powerbook, no drop, no stuck CD
that I know of. F12 returns nothing?

Are there any remedies other than sending it in?

This is just very crude advise and I hope more sophisticed explanations from
more experienced user will come forward (I am working exclusively with OS X
since it was in Public Beta, well almost in the first half year) but here is
a start:

Save your data, and preferences and do a clean install.
Second best: save your data, rename your System Folder, install without
wiping the disk
Third best save your data, boot from OS9 disk and just install and hopefully
all files will be replaced by the OS 9.1 versions.

That might well be, but the activity in the neighboring apartments is hard
to control :-). For my own experience I have not noticed any dependence on
the activity of my cell or cordless phone (900 MHz) or the microwave and
have also not been able to actively reproduce the connection failure. It is
probably just a bad karma on the day it happens ;-). All my talk with the
Apple techs did not reveal any new clues (I don't blame them since it
appears really cryptic to everyone I have talked about).

The ABS is not in the room I am working in, and with the stochastic nature
of the problem I am probably going to give it yet another shot instead of
watching a light bulb until it hits again :-). I guess next time I am just
buying an UPS since it is a handy thing to have anyhow and no waste of money
even if it doesn't cure the airport trouble.

Thanks for the suggestion. I always thought that the ac adapter would filter
power fluctuations out before they could affect the Powerbook. I always
loved notebooks because they have their little UPS built in but I don't
really know. The only thing I can tell that after I loose connection to the
airport, no reboot of the TiBook help. I really have to bring it almost into
physical contact with the airport to regain it and as soon as I move away
the connection drops again. So I usually reboot the airport base station and
change the wireless channel. So maybe the power fluctuations affect the base
station? I guess I buy one of those expensive filters and plug the into the
socket before the ABS.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I run OS 10.2.1. In OSX there is an
automatic fallback if the Airport is not available it tries to connect via
Ethernet and if this is not available it tries to dial up.

Airport connection dropouts

2002-11-03 Thread R. Hannes Niedner
I wonder if other people on this list experience flaky Airport connections.
I have a TiBook 667/GB Ethernet Rev B Airport Card and a graphite base
station all the newest updates installed. Normally I've got all 4 bars no
matter where I have got the TiBook in the apartment but hen suddenly -
without moving the TiBook the wireless reception drops completely. Again
this happens out of the blue and has no correlation to any particular
software I am running at the time. The cordless phone and the cell phone
that I have do not change in their activity (unplugging them makes no
difference). Once the connection is gone it sometimes comes back on it's own
(after a couple of hours) as I can tell from the ErageX error log (I am
checking email all 5 mins). If I want to regain connection I need to bring
the TiBook right next to the Airport station, then in many cases restart the
base station (pulling the power plug) and then change the channel via the
airport config utility. After that everything will be ok for a undetermined
period of time I have experienced months without failure but also recurring
connection failure several times a day. I had already exchanged the Airport
card but no difference. I still believe it's probably got something to do
with the TiBook, since I never had any trouble with my Pismo.

Any ideas?

Sorry, I was convinced that I already posted to the list that the Orinocco
Gold Card woks flawlessly on the Wallstreet using the
wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net driver and running on 10.1.5.

Re: pc Airport compatible

I think any of the cards listed her will do:

They all work more or less in an Apple Powerbook and should even more so to
connect to an ABS from a PC. With the help of this list I bought an Orinocco
Gold Card which connects fine to an Airport (but read the FAQ) from a
Wallstreet, at work I have many colleges connecting their Dells using Lucent
cards to ABS' without problems.

I am not sure if this particular setting was already present in pre Jaguar
version. In 10.2.1 you can find the setting in
 System Preferences->Network -> Show Airport->Airport Tab

Unfortunately I cannot check if you will find it in 10.1.5 since I have only
Jaguar running.

Good luck/h

The funny thing is I once tried this since it seemed the logical choice, but
with this setting my TiBook behaves like described by Amber. I had to set it
to "Join most recently used available network" (and have it remember the
password) and now it switches transparently (well you see the scrolling
login indicated at the little airport signal menu icon) from Roadrunner at
home and 2 different wireless networks at work.

Have a look at the keyboard preference pane 'Full Keyboard Access' maybe
that enables you to accomplish your goal, but it works slightly different

Tar.gz is a standard UNIX compression filetype. Associate the tar.gz files
with Stuffit-Expander (in short: ctrl+click -> show info->switch to open
with application->Choose Stuffit Expander->Change all).
Then you can double click on the file and it will be unzipped and untarred
and you find a new item with a red icon in the same folder where the tar.gz
is located. Double click on that and you are ready to scan.

Well, I guess if I suggest that I would send you a CD with the downloads I
would not comply to Apple copyright, but maybe your local apple store can do
it ( and there are universities and company networks that could serve in
place of your own broadband connection ) I still believe it much more a sign
of general frustration about Apples latest moves, but if you are really
p...ed by that just ask Apple customer support if they send you a CD with
the updates for shipping and handling ($19.95 I believe...:-))

There is some truth about that, but if you evenly distribute some feltpad
(spacers) on the display bezel you could relieve the pressure of the
keyboard on the screen. I use the following and I am quite happy with it,
but I am sure a sensible selection amongst common household items could save
you 20 bucks + shipping and handling.

(Like always the disclaimer: I've got nothing to do with the company, I am
just a satisfied customer.)

Well, thanks to all who responded. Before I sold my Pismo in favor of a
TiBook 667/30 GB, 1 GB RAM rev C, I bought a new battery (only 45 min left)
not knowing that I could have exploited my Apple Care. Since I am already
experiencing degrading of the battery that came with the TiBook from about
3+ hours to 2.5 hours at best I am wondering when I should contact Apple for
an replacement (hey, I bought the new TiBook with Apple Care, so I might as
well take advantage of it this time). What is the minimum acceptable battery
usage time with an average use for the above configuration?

Are all those situations really going to be resolved for free with Apple
care (eg. Getting a new battery just because you get only 45mins out instead
of close to 3hours or a new screen if it isn't as bright anymore) ? That
would be really cool, but just recently I was told that Apple care does not
replace your TiBook screen if you break it (which is really easely
accomplished). Just curious.

Ryan,

All the best from me. When I figured that the power adapter was broken, I
had only 10 minutes battery left. The TiBook is my preferred working tool
and I did not want to cope without it - not even for 48h (so I paid $80
bucks for the new adapter-see prev. post).
I feel they should give you a working adapter in exchange for the broken one
right away, especially within the warranty time (since they are most likely
going to replace yours anyway - check the serial nr).
So you have my full sympathy and I hope you get the ride and your adapter
back in 'no' time.

Re: TiBook power adapter issues

2002-07-18 Thread R. Hannes Niedner

Yup, had this happen to my power adapter (TiBook, 3months old)) last Friday
night. I went to the local Apple Store on Campus and they made me buy a
second adapter, whilst taking care of the broken one over the weekend. On
Tuesday Morning I was scheduled to pick up the fixed one, and I brought the
new one along to return it. As it turned out they wanted to give me a brand
new one to replace the broken one. This time I dealt with much more sensible
gentleman and he simply reimbursed me and I kept the new adapter and just
returned the box. Go figure.
I hope you can get a replacement right away without shelling out the $80,
even if it was only transiently. Principally I would not mind having a
second power adapter, but then none of the standard Apple ones. I really
love my TiBook, but the power adapter sucks big time (when will they finally
introduce a more sturdy version with a angled plug).

Sorry guys, I never meant any harm. I was not careful enough since Ryan's

I believe Laurent Daudelin already has that job. But, he too agrees on your

As quoted from

Dan Knight of Low End Mac manages G-Books, which was

Re: "virii" (OT)

2002-07-08 Thread R. Hannes Niedner

Kyle,

Actually, I never meant to dismiss your point. It's just that there are
standards and there are habits and sometimes it takes very long for the
first to overcome the latter if ever (Just have a look as the use of SI
units). But never mind you didn't start this thread and Jim probably
approached the topic much to 'biological' and we all have a choice, and no
matter whether we choose 'virii' or 'viruses' (my spellchecker complains
only about 'virii' :-)), everybody knows what we are talking about.

BTW. I have always appreciated you excellent expert knowledge on this list
and would be last to try to argue with you. :-)

Kyle,
Sure, you could and it would only take you probably 2-3 mins , that's how
long it took me with Google. But you made it quite clear that the guys from
McAffee and Perl.com have a lot to lern about technical industry standards.

Hmmm Kyle,

so much about 'Technical Industry standard for the plural of Virus'.
Basically I personally don't really care what people call these nasty bugs
(not to be confused with lexical or logical programming errors or an insect
on the biological from). I think people are entitled to call things by the
name they see fit as long as it clear what they are talking about and I am
pretty sure the 'listers' can handle 'viruses' and 'virii'.
But I am sure the subject is fit to create a lot of noise...

Re: Adding memory issues to Pismo

2002-06-24 Thread R. Hannes Niedner

I run my Pismo 500MHz with 640 MB RAM and never had any issues or data loss.
Although, afaik you can loose the data in your RAM when you try swapping
batteries whilst not having the Pismo plugged into AC at the same time. The
internal battery apparently does not have enough capacity to back more than
512MB of memory. This was a minor issue for me, since most of the time I
would run from two batteries on long trips or I had an AC socket handy when
I had to swap. In the worst case you would net to shut down -> swap
batteries and reboot.

Re: Microsoft Word documents in OS 9 and OS X

2002-05-27 Thread R. Hannes Niedner

Amber,

Sorry it didn¹t work out, Obviously the changes made in the OsX finder do
only apply for OsX. Although I do agree with what Jeremy mentions below,
there might still be one other way to do it. Someone else brought up Apple
script and maybe there is someone script savvy on this list who can help you
out. If not, on the Entourage list are at least two Apple script gurus
(Allen Watson & Paul Berkowitz) that maybe be able to help you out. I listed
some relevant links, maybe you find some hints there already, but if not
just write them an email.

Re: Microsoft Word documents in OS 9 and OS X

2002-05-23 Thread R. Hannes Niedner

Amber,

You could try the following: booting up to OS X select any Word file, right
click (or ctrl + click) and select 'Show Info'. In the upper part of the
window the is a dropdown list, click on the little arrow where it says
'General Information' and select 'Open with Application'. Click on the icon
of the Application (which should be the 'W' for word X) and the select the
word 2001 program, which is either already in the list or you can select by
browsing to your folder tree by choosing 'other..' (possible location:
Application (Mac OS 9)-Microsoft Office ?). The symbol should now stand for
word 2001. Finally click on 'Change All...' and confirm the dialog box. That
should do the job.

Good luck.

Re: TiBook scratches

I am using WildEepz display cushions and their screen protector WildEepz
PowerBook ScreensavRz (very thin microfiber cloth of keyboard size) and so
far not 'scratches' seen on the screen.
If someone is interested here is the url (I think I posted it at the begin
of this thread already).

Re: TiBook Screen Scratches

2002-05-21 Thread R. Hannes Niedner

You can by a protective micro fiber cloth (WildEepz PowerBook ScreensavRz!)
and also some distance pads (WildEepz Display Cushions)for the TiBook here:

Here is the description taken from the page:

"ScreensavRz not only protect your precious display surface from abrasion
caused by the close tolerances in today's ultra-thin notebooks, they clean
your screen too! Made from a woven, ultra-thin (1.5 mil) optical-grade
microfiber cloth, ScreensavRz, even when dry, allow you to safely clean the
screen, or any surface of your notebook.

This super-soft cloth shields the display surface when transporting your
notebook computer and is machine wash and dryable. ScreensavRz are so thin,
soft and supple, they stow as easy as a dollar bill. For late model Apple
notebooks, combine ScreensavRz with WildEepz Display Cushions to transform
your ŒBook into a ROCK. Don¹t betray your portable computer investment, get
saved! "

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with the company. I just bought the products
and they work for me.

Re: Pismo Replacement Keyboard

Keith,

About a year and a half ago I swapped the German keyboard in my Pismo
against one with an American layout. If I remember correctly, I just ordered
it from Apple via a our Apple certified dealer on campus. Whilst I exchanged
my Pismo with a TiBook 8 weeks ago I still have the German Pismo keyboard.
So if you cannot find a new keyboard contact me off list if you want to
fallback on that one.

Here are some sources:

Ouch, that hurts at least twice because firstly after converting to macs
after 10 years of windows, I appreciated the fact that I was supporting a
company with a loyal business attitude - I don't really want to stress
moral here but I just felt being on the right (light) side . - I am now
wondering if this is still the case or if Apple has adjusted it's principles
to the standard of some of its competitors (I am not calling naMS). Secondly
I just switched my subscriber address for this list to my mac.com account
since my old ISP was spam blocked (the whole domain not just me)just to
get SPAM controlled again.

I hope it turns out not to be that bad.

Just my 2cents
