Couldn't help myself: 800 mhz G3 ibook + Mac OS 10.3: $699 at CDW

2004-03-09 Thread Sid Barras
Hi Gang:

As a faithful member of the "long-in-the-tooth powerbook" club, I've owned
and/or own three pb 2400s, 3 pb 1400s, 1 wallstreet, and 1 pismo, I've never
considered purchasing a new powerbook or especially an ibook. These have
been adequate for my needs, and have excellent upgrade and expansion
capabilities.

However, I couldn't pass up this offer that came across my computer screen
last night 800 mhz G3 ibook + Mac OS 10.3: $699 at CDW

But I think since it's a G3 'book (and therefore "last year's model") it's a
natural progression, right? (I'm thinking of things I can say to my wife
when she sees it for the first time...)

Does anyone have any better excuses I can use?

Regards
Sid B

Curious Wallstreet faux pas-won't shutdown; Restarts instead!

2004-02-21 Thread Sid Barras
Any clues/ Experience with this one?

My wallstreet won't shutdown. When shutdown is selected, it restarts
instead; battery or AC adapter has no effect. I thought perhaps the on/off
switch was stuck in a depressed position, but that doesn't seem to be the
case, the key moves freely and apparently full range of movement...

I have to either (or both) unplug the AC adapter/ pull the battery to get it
to shutdown. Furthermore, when battery or adapter are reinserted, it starts
up immediately. No other problems, though, it works fine. Of course, unless
I time the yanking of the power supply at the right moment, I get that
annoying "Did not shut down properly" dialog box, and it tries to run disk
first aid

Any experience with this would be appreciated.

Looking for MacAlly cardbus USB driver

2004-02-09 Thread Sid Barras
HI Gang,
I lost my driver for my MacAlly PCMCIA cardbus USB adapter when my hard
drive died in my wallstreet. I don't remember finding it originally on the
internet though I searched high and low. I finally got it by going back to
the guy who sold me the card. It's been too long for me to remember the
guy's email address or name...

Bottom line is: I'm begging among this fine brotherhood for a kind soul to
send me via email attachment the driver I need

Or, a link to a driver online.

Thanks for any and all help!

No. Haven't tried that-- I did the typical RAM upgrade-- took out the
original pair of 64mb cards, replaced them with the 256ers...
Yet, it did run for over a year with the new RAM installed before these
things started cropping up...

Unknown source of Freezing Wallstreet

2004-02-03 Thread Sid Barras
Hi All,

My wallstreet (266mhz, 512mb RAM) has managed to cling to a chronic problem
of freezing only moments after startup (most of the time).

I say "Cling" to the problem, because it is still there after these steps to
correct it:

different hard drive.
Reinstalled system folders.
Modem board reinstalled.
Hard drive caddy and connecting hardware (the plug-in to the hard drive that
plugs into the logic board.)
Different versions of system. (OS 9, 9.1, 9.2)
Starting up from remote hard drive.
Starting up from Norton Systemworks and running Norton Disk Doctor.
Starting up with no extensions.
Starting up with various other extension combinations.

And probably some other things I've forgotten I did and probably repeated
too.

The thing that puzzles me the most is the first item I've tried. Surely a
completely different hard drive would do it.

Thoughtful logic would say the problem is within the logic board, or
something in the computer that has remained the same throughout the process,
thereby indicating a "hardware" problem. But which part?

Should I now simply start changing the other components of the wallstreet?
Thank God for my trusty old pb 1400-- never has given me a bit of trouble,
is faster than the wallstreet (it has a nice upgraded CPU-- G3 466mhz) but,
damn, that RAM limit...

Thanks to all for thoughtful suggestions.

OT: Having brain cramp while trying to record analog audio into 'puter

2003-12-19 Thread Sid Barras
Hi gang,
Maybe a post here will unfreeze my brain stall: I have a cable running from
my stereo system, from the tape "audio out" via phono plugs, into an adapter
that winds up as a mini stereo jack which I've plugged into the jack on the
back of my G4 tower. I can turn on the sound control panel and turn it on
and play the radio/tape/LP through the computer speakers.

Now, how do I "record it" and convert it into a digital file that can then
be burned onto a CD?

I'm sitting here congratulating myself on finding the proper cables to get
the sound into the computer. But now I am stumped. I have itunes, I have
toast titanium 5.2; I have quicktime pro (5); but none of them have an
apparent method of converting this analog signal into digital files. I see
the "convert to MP3" option in itunes, but that doesn't get me there either.

Surely I am missing something obvious, hence the "brain cramp."

Can someone here give me a swift boot up the next couple of stairs?

Regards,
Sid B

Sid Replies:
I have indeed tried starting up from a bootable CD (Norton Utilities or an
OS install disk) and from a remote SCSI disk. What I've found is: it won't
boot from the CD until I've tried a couple of times. Strange, but true. It
will never simply boot from the CD (holding the "c" key down, of course)
until I've tried it a couple of times. It won't start from the SCSI device
at all, or at least not until I've accessed the startup disk control panel,
which can be done by starting up with Norton, then without running the
utility, selecting the startup disk control panel from the OS on the Norton
disk.

I was afraid that the Hard drive might be the culprit (even though it is
brand new and "expensive") but I've even gone through the troubleshooting
procedure of installing the hard drive in my pb 1400 (after I've gone
through the long and arduous task of partitioning it and installing OS 9.1
coz the pb 1400 won't boot from OS 9.2...) well, every time I've put the
hard drive into another laptop (I've got two pb 1400s and it's booted from
both of those each time I've installed it)

So, it would seem (though I still suspect some sort of software problem)
that the communication "link" hardware between the CPU and the hard drive is
the problem. So I bought a hard drive bay, which included the little board
that plugs into the CPU and plugs into the hard drive on the other end,
without making any difference

Where I'm at now is running OS 9.2 on the wallstreet, but still having
freeze up troubles. I am probably going to reformat the hard drive again,
and do the long version (zero all data, and one other option I can't
remember what its called) of the reformat.

Now, here's a kicker that I must decide on:
I would really like to keep and use the wallstreet, coz I have lots of
legacy equipment that would no longer be useful if I bought a newer model
without SCSI and cardbus slots.
I have lots of RAM too, so I'm thinking that even though an upgrade CPU such
as the sonnet g3 500 and the g4 500 are not real bargains, coz buying them
would raise the cost of the wallstreet well into fairly new and much better
"ibook" region, but, as I said, I have peripherals that sort of "even out"
the cost/benefit scale.

So, should I put a newer CPU into this machine, given the problems I've been
having, some of which may be hardware related?
Would a replacement mother board (which might be had for $50) to accompany
the CPU replacement make sense to you?

I'm not really stuck on OS 10; I could proceed happily for years to come
running OS 9 on this machine. I still have my desktop G4 dual processor with
1.5 gb of RAM to be my "power" machine...

Well, I could ramble on forever here, and this is not a thesis statement,
and this forum is not a place for too much erudicity

Happy holidays to one and all from CajunLand USA, South Louisiana

Wallstreet Woes -- Commiserators welcome

2003-12-09 Thread Sid Barras
Hi Wallstreet users:

I've been pleased as punch with my wallstreet -- until recently. I had it
about a year; added a super fast 60 gb hard drive, 512 mb RAM, was running
OS 10.2.6 successfully (albeit a bit slow) and then...

Then, one day it woke up and decided to function only occasionally. I
started getting the "flashing floppy with the question mark in the center"
instead of the happy mac (or the white apple of OS 10)...

I've tried reinstalling OS 10, deleting OS 10, lots of things, like
formatting and partitioning the hard drive again.

But despite all my best efforts, the unit continues to have difficulty. I've
done away with OS 10 completely. Running OS 9.2.2 (or 9.1 on the other
partition) and am running extensions I know are compatible on my other mac
units. Yet the computer continues to have intermittent freeze ups-- well not
really intermittent-- I can count on at least once a day.

I've gone back to using my pb 1400; but I'd like to use the wallstreet again
someday, due to bigger screen, and especially, enough RAM to run photoshop.

If anyone has experienced similar wallstreet woes, and has an answer, I'm
all ears. Of if this situation "sounds familiar" maybe you have a
suggestion.

Thanks to all
Sid

Any inexpensive external DVD burners/ copiers for Mac?

2003-12-04 Thread Sid Barras
I know the general answer is yes,
But are there any of those DVD burners for just a bit over $125 like I see
for wintel units all the time? Especially one that will work in OS 9 as well
as OS X? (So I could use it on my wallstreet or my G4 tower)

I'm also interested in DVD copying software I see for wintel environment
too. I sure would like to make some spare copies of my Lord of the Rings
Extended versions -- they get played an awful lot, and I hate it when they
get scratched and start skipping and slowing down and such..

Thanks for any advice!

Re: wallstreet and 256mb ram modules

2003-11-01 Thread Sid Barras
I, too, have two 256 mb modules from OWC in my wallstreet, running OS X
10.2.6 I had them in there for over 3 months no trouble at all.

I have had an unusual problem start up just recently, though. The start up
can't finish because the computer can't find the hard drive hooked to it. I
seriously doubt it is the memory modules causing this.

But I've only been able to solve it (temporarily) by actually removing the
hard drive and reinstalling it. I don't know for sure, but I don't like the
way the hard drive fastens down, nor do I like the way the hard drive plugs
into the CPU chip. I have bid on a motherboard on ebay for the wallstreet,
thinking its the plug in site on the chip that is not getting a good
connection. But, then again, I seem to be leaning on a software problem too.
Whenever it does restart after one of these episodes, it starts up in OS
9.2.

Wallstreet starts running slowwww? Try this

2003-10-20 Thread Sid Barras
Hi all,
I noticed that when my pb wallstreet (OS 10.2.6; 512mb ram; 60gb hd;
original 266mhz G3 processor) is running lots of apps (powerpoint, word,
appleworks, photoshop 7, maybe a couple of other small apps) it starts to
run really slow, and gets really hot sitting on my lap, and I see that dang
beach ball way too often...

So I got this Idea: I went in the freezer and got one of those blue ice
thingies you put in a cooler to keep stuff cold (this one's a packet, its
flexible, even when frozen) I put it under the wallstreet, with a towel
between it and me, and presto! In just a few minutes, in the time it takes
the wallstreet to cool down clear up to the cpu, my apps start behaving much
better again.

Of course, it ain't the perfect solution-- that cpu is a heat engine! the
blue ice thingy is used up in about 15 minutes. I suppose I'll need to buy
several.. Sort of like rechargeable batteries, ya know?

OS 10.2.6 /Wallstreet: Assign tasks to function keys?

2003-10-10 Thread Sid Barras
HI Gang,

I've thoroughly searched MAC help (heretofore unthinkable!) and can find no
complement to OS 9's ability to assign function keys a task to perform,
quickly and easily through a control panel... I had all of the function keys
assigned to open my most used apps.. I can't find any way to do the same in
OS 10.

I have a few other pet peeves about functionality and convenience in OS X
vs. 9.x comparisons, (chooser, file sharing, networking, certain apps lose
functionality like grammarian) but the function key thing is the worst.

Anyone know how this is done? Third party suggestion?

Surely an interface as elegant and modern as this is capable?

Thanks, one and all

OS X 10.2.6 running on wallstreet - great!

2003-09-09 Thread Sid Barras
I recently installed the newest OS on my wallstreet and so far, it's working
great.
In fact, its working better than the previous incarnations of OS X. I had
10.2 and 10.0 running previously, and found myself back on 9 far too often,
due to driver incompatibilities, out-dated apps, etc.

But I must recommend this version- so far, (about 3 weeks) no crashes, no
problems.

How to get wallstreet to recognize a PC card modem?

2003-08-14 Thread Sid Barras
Hi gang,
I'm running OS X (10.2.2) on my wallstreet... I wrote last week about having
trouble that has narrowed itself down to the modem, since my pb 1400
connects and runs fine at the same location (though I'm running OS 9.1 on
the pb 1400).

Though I just bought a replacement for the wallstreet internal modem, and
will install it when I get it, I have a PC card modem, and installed it, and
the modem seems to be recognized by the system (it shows up in the header
menu); when I try to select the modem in the TCP/IP, it will only give me
the option of selecting a modem located in either the printer/modem slot, or
the internal modem, so I can't complete the "installation" of the PC card
modem.

Any suggestions?

Re: WallStreet internal modem

2003-08-14 Thread Sid Barras
Hi Dr. Gensberg, et al,
Hmm. After reading your letter about the modem problems being unique to the
wallstreet, I tried my old powerbook 1400, with a PC card modem (global
village 56k) and ... it worked. Not only did the global village modem
connect, it connected at a faster rate (52000 vs. 46 to 48000 at best on the
wallstreet internal) but it was a reliable connection as well.

So, there is something smelly here. I'm going to try a replacement modem for
the wallstreet, but something is gnawing at me that says it might be
something in the "system". I'm running OS 10.2.2 on the wallstreet (and 9.1
on the powerbook 1400), and darn it, one thing I hate about the OS X is that
you just don't have access to tweaking control panels and stuff like that
like you used to in OS 9 and 8. I don't know enough about the OS X to know
if there are 3rd party extensions and system tweaks, but it does seem to be
a more "spare" experience. very elegant, though, and I love the transparent
windows.

Lots of G3 wallstreet internal modem disconnecting- seen thisbefore?

2003-08-06 Thread Sid Barras
Hi all,
My internal wallstreet modem is constantly dropping out, plus it
connects at slower speeds (48000, or 49333 as opposed to 5 to
52000) compared to the global village 56k buscard modem I had been
using in my previous workhorse, the pb 1400.

I'm considering actually installing the buscard modem in my wallstreet
to see if it will behave properly, though I have concerns about its
compatibility with OS X (10.2.2)

Has anyone else seen consistent problems from their apple internal
modem? I'm wondering if I might have a bad one. It does connect and
stay connected enough for me to say its not "non-functional" but it
always drops out at least every half hour or 45 minutes after
connecting, so it is a first class nuisance...

Greetings from cajunland, South Louisiana

OS X (10.2.2) successful on Wallstreet

2003-08-02 Thread Sid Barras
Hi all,
to those who've held back installing OS X on their wallstreet because
of all the naysayers, well, count me as one who's found it to run very
satisfactory.

I did put in a fast (20gb 5400rpm travelstar) Hard drive, and maxed the
memory at 512mb, but other than that, my 266mhz G3 wallstreet is stock.

And it is running fine. I did give up a tiny bit of functionality (I've
got to search for drivers that no longer work for some of my older
peripheral, and may not find the), but I also installed OS 9.2.2 on the
other partition of the hard drive, so I'll be able to start up on sys 9
if I need to use these again.

There is no question that in my mind the OS X interface is much more
elegant. It takes some getting used to, especially the file handling
and look of the windows. I do also kind of miss all the control panels
and the ability to fine tune things more, but I think I can get used to
OS X.

Why external 7200rpm HD cheaper than internal 5400rpm drive?

2003-07-17 Thread Sid Barras
Hi gang,
I'm still hunting a HD for my new-to-me wallstreet, and I've seen so many
macmall, outpost, ebay, etc ads for HDs that I pretty much know how much or
little I'll have to spend on the unit--

but I can't understand why a firewire or USB external 40gb HD, that comes in
a cool case, runs at 7200rpm, comes with free software and cute accessories,
etc, etc, is $20-30 less than:

an internal HD for powerbooks that is 10gb lighter, (20 or 30 gb) has no
bracket, just the HD itself, runs at 5400 rpm? could it be that they sell
more external hard drives?

It's killing me to spend any more money on this wallstreet after writing my
thesis to the list and getting back some astute and sage advice. But, if I
keep this gal, she must have a new hard drive. 4gb is just not enough, and
to get the speed boost, it looks as though you must go up to at least 30gb
to get to the 5400 rpm club.

Decisions, decisions. I should just spend on impulse. Less stressful that
way.

I remember when the war department and I bought a minivan for the family.
(I've got seven kids-- two boys, five girls, just like the VonTrapp family)
We did so much shopping and price comparing that-- well, all the joy of
spending money just vanished. We got the right model (Dodge Caravan SE) but
I will never ever drive myself crazy buying an auto like that again.

Yet, it seems I'm doing it again on this Hard drive purchase..

AHRGHH!!
I think I'll pull my Emily Dickinson poetry book off the shelf. My best
stress reduction technique.

"... skies of molten blue...
tell all the truth, but tell it slant..."

UPGRADE DECISIONS, what to do? Part B

2003-07-13 Thread Sid Barras
Dear Gang,
here's part B of my long post wishing for help in upgrading decisions:

Please excuse the extreme length and breadth of my post-- think of it as an
"open" self-examination I'm putting my pros and cons list for public
airing in a dual hope that I'll recognize the right way to go here based on
seeing it in print, but save that, I'm hoping that casual (or careful)
unbiased observers will be kind enough to observe my data and suggest sound
advice and decisions that I may not be able to see, based on my close
proximity to the situation.

really the only decisions I'm not certain to make are:

(a)whether to upgrade the hard drive to 5400 or 7200 rpm. I may go for a
slower hard drive with at least 30 gb of storage space.

(b) The other is whether to go to the G4 upgrade. That would be the hardest
decision to make, especially due to the high cost of the upgrade.

The battery is expensive too, but I see that as unavoidable.

Nevertheless, since I was able to acquire the assemblage I have now
(Wallstreet 266, zip drive, superdiskdrive, already had the power adapter,
existing library of software and peripherals, etc.)
at what I consider a reasonably good deal, I don't see further upgrading as
superfluous.

One more wildcard to throw into the mix: acquiring extra funds from the sale
of my existing laptop, which, I should sell. I already have a pb 1400 G3
250mhz 10gb HD as a very capable backup computer.

The computer I have, that this wallstreet will replace, is no slouch, and
really must be put up for sale, which would abate a considerable amount of
the costs I'm considering.

AND, BY THE WAY, IS OPEN TO OFFERS BEGINNING RIGHT AWAY, BEFORE THE DREADED
"EBAY POSTING" THAT MAY INEVITABLY FOLLOW:

FOR SALE:(This letter was not started or intended to osmose into a
classified ad, but here goes, since it is germane to my ultimate decision
making):

ONE POWERBOOK 1400, WITH SONNET 400 MHZ G3 UPGRADE.
64 MB RAM.
VIDEO OUT CARD, CABLE,ETC.
ACTIVE MATRIX SCREEN.
30 GB HARD DRIVE. (4200 RPM, I THINK)
ETHERNET CARDBUS. WITH DONGLE.
56K GLOBAL VILLAGE MODEM AND ETHERNET, WITH DUAL DONGLE.
EVERY CONCEIVABLE SOFTWARE PROGRAM KNOWN TO MAC PEOPLE:
(OF COURSE, THESE MUST BE DELETED, THEY WOULD BE LEFT ON THE HARD DRIVE POST
SALE FOR "TESTING PURPOSES" ONLY)*
A partial list of these programs:
appleworks 6, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe In Design 1.5, Adobe Photoshop 7,
Image Ready, Lots of plug ins, like Fractal design, knockout pro, eye candy,
some others I can't think of at the moment, Microsoft Office X, Microsoft
Office 2001, Grammarian X, Grammarian 2 [for sys 9], Maclink plus 13.0
[latest, full-featured version], Dreamweaver Studio MX [for sys X and 9],
Dreamweaver Studio 4 [which includes fireworks 4, flash 4, etc., for sys 9],
BB Edit, FileMaker Pro, both versions, for sys X and sys 9, Norton System
Works, Stuffit Deluxe, for sys X and sys 9, Palm Desktop 4, plus all the
software for a palm device that one could possibly want-- I won't list them
individually, but my palm is definitely "fully loaded."
Lots of games, but most of them not the high dollar "shoot-em-ups" -- not my
style;
The Utility programs like Retrospect, Popchar Pro (excellent font utility),
Norton System works, (I think I mentioned that)
Quicktime 6 with pro key enabled, Roxio Titanium Toast [CD, MP3,video
recording app], Ray Gun (for eliminating hisses and pops, etc., from vinyl
to CD recording),
Quicken 2003 Deluxe,
Merriam Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus, an interactive full featured
program, very useful.
Spelltools, similar to MW-- I don't use it much now that I have MW
installed.

OK, I'm sure I've worn out even the most interested of souls.

If you would like to make suggestions that would be of interest to the
powerbook group as a whole, please post your reply to the group.

If you would like to discuss the sale of my pb 1400, please send me a
private post.

Thanks to all, thanks for your indulgence and patience.

UPGRADE DECISIONS, what to do? Part A

2003-07-13 Thread Sid Barras
s; I especially like the
grayscale ink sets. I do mostly black and white, and until recently all of
it in an old style chemical darkroom. [which is still much less expensive
than the digital/ink/computer darkroom solution, btw] BUt-- I digress...

Herewith ends part A. I will post a letter with the same subject, except
labeled Part B, in hopes it squeaks by the list momma.

5400 rpm hard drive for Wallstreet-Serious Performance upgrade?

2003-07-05 Thread Sid Barras
Hi all,
new to the list-- New wallstreet will soon arrive with a 4 gb HD. I'm
looking at upgrading this unit to max performance with stock 266mhz chip,
running OS 9.2, but with an eye toward possibly running 10.2 in the future.
(512mb RAM installed).
I need a bigger hard drive, and I'd pay the extra dough if those who know
would confirm a substantial performance improvement by using the faster hard
drives. I see where there is even a new 40gb 7200 rpm Travelstar out for
this computer.
Any comments, pro or con?

Re: Grammarian

2003-07-02 Thread Sid Barras
HI Bruce,
I'm an English/ Creative writing university student, I use Grammarian on all
documents I produce. It too, suggests some inappropriate choices, but
overall, I'd call it indispensible. I do write fairly well, but it catches
things like tense shift, dangling participles and other things not obvious.
Often, I use improper grammar purposely, and I simply click past the
suggestions I don't want. But, it usually catches one or two mistakes per
1000 words I write that I would have missed. Therefore, it is worth having.
