Re: Battery Problems Solved!!!

2006-02-21 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters
Since someone mentioned that they appreciate people posting to
inform of the resolution of a problem, allow me this.

My battery is fixed!!! I the Lombard unplugged in sleep mode for
about seven hours, and the battery worked when I plugged it back in.
It showed all 4 LEDs and a full charge in OS 9. In fact, I'm typing
this on battery power, where before, it would go instantly to sleep
to preserve the contents of memory.

Caleb,
Ecstatic Lombard Lover at large

If you left the lombard unplugged with the dead battery in it, how
did the battery get charged ?

What exactly was the symptom of the dead battery ?

Well, I use USBank and their site works just fine on my Mac using any

Re: Lombard frying batteries???

2006-02-17 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters
I dont know why, but I have had _zero_ luck bringing any third
party WS or lombard batteries back to life. BTI or Newertech.

Well, I called NewerTech and they think it's a bad PMU, but I still
want a second opinion. They did say that they could get approval for
another replacement, if I wanted to, however.

So, are there any other symptoms of a bad PMU other than fried
batteries? I really don't want to ship my machine off, because it's
got all my stuff on it, and it's got a couple of cracks in the lower
case, and one to the left of the LCD on the inside of the lid that I
don't want to stress any more than I have to.

Also, before I forget, does anyone know the keyboard combination to
force the fans to come on, because I suspect that mine has a bad
fan, as well.

*sighs as he's planning on spending the price of a used TiBook to
get the Lombard fixed*

Caleb

Did you notice any odd behavior ? For example my primary lombard
will charge my one good battery even though the battery reads 100%.
This worries me.

You can always try swapping out the PMU - if I knew where it was.

Re: Lombard frying batteries???

2006-02-17 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters

Dear listers,

This is the second time I've had to email NewerTech support about
replacing a battery, in the past month, but I'm starting to wonder
if it's not my Lombard that's causing my battery problems, instead
of the batteries themselves. I know the charging board is good on
it, AFAIK, and the batteries did quit showing up as charged, with a
corresponding light on the LED indicators on the side of the
battery. Still, it's curious as to how a good company can send me
two bad batteries in a row, without the possibility of a machine
problem..

Well, hopefully you'll all have some good advice for me,
Caleb

Re: WallStreet upgrade: enquiries and ruminations

Hi,

You'll be much happier with G4 so don't even consider G3...seriously.
Here's an affordable upgrade from an outstanding company:
 https://4daystar.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=512

Thanks! They offer a good price - however, the necessity of having my
laptop sent over to them is a huge drawback. Wonder if there's any
chance of just having the necessary components sent my way; will ask
the Daystar chaps.

Also, I'll cosign Bruce and Laurent's recommendation of DMS for your
 RAM needs; top drawer service.

I'll have to stick to eBay - trying to make this upgrade as
budget-friendly as possible.

Cheerio,

Mick.

Dont send the laptop, send a CPU card. Buy a 233 MHz CPU (with the
512K cache) and ship that. Thats what I did.

Re: Hi! (and Pismo DVD-ROM issue)

2006-01-31 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters

Hi all. I just joined.

I recently came into posession of a broken G3 Powerbook "Pismo". It
seemed relatively complete (no hard drive, no keyboard, no psu, but
cpu, ram, dvd-rom, battery). I borrowed a 3400 from work, and tried
out the pismo with it, but nothing.

I completely disassembled it, down to the power connector, to find
that it had sheared from the board:

http://www.umlautllama.com/gallery/pismo/IMG_0562

so I desoldered, straightned, and reconnected it:
http://www.umlautllama.com/gallery/pismo/IMG_0566

I plugged it all back together, along with a 20gig spare drive I
had, and it gave me the ? Folder. YAY!

I just got done installing OS 9 on a 1 gig partition, and OS 10.2 on
the remaining partition. It all works really well.

(I do still need a shield for the ram/cpu area, keyboard, and power supply)

I just finally found my 10.4 DVD-R, and was about to install that
over 10.2, to find out that for some reason, the DVD-ROM drive (the
stock apple one) doesn't seem to read DVD-R discs... or at least, it
doesn't read DVD-R discs that I've burnt.

Is this a common problem, or am I doing something wrong on my end?

-s

(I've also got a 15" TiBook 500 (Rev A), and my current machine, a
15" AlBook 1.67ghz... which belong to work, but for all intents and
purposes, my machines.)

Nice rework on the sound/AC board.

From what I gather the lombard/pismo DVDs are getting flaky by now.
Luckily, you can replace the mechanisms with a number of other
devices you can find on Ebay. This is a good reference page:

Re: Wifi antenna

I agree completely!

This bizarre design change forces me to take my iBook when traveling and not
my Albook so I can get stronger WIFI connections. Now, my Pismo, because of
its larger size and much larger antenna (compared to a 12") is the WIFI
champ, but too big to travel with, for me anyway.

Re: Wifi antenna

2006-01-27 Thread Tom Ethen
If you look at a parts page on the 12" powerbook, the antenna only goes
around the bottom and up to the grey tabs on the side of the display.

The iBook and Pismo antenna goes all the way around the display, this giving
a larger area to receive WIFI signals.

Thanks all

According to the Apple representitive I talked to over the AppleCare
phone line, being Apple Trained trained doesnt get you anywhere. In
order to NOT void your warranty by opening up the computer, you also
have to be Apple _Certified_ which apparently means being part of a
larger business.

If I recall correctly, its a failing backlight. It is fixable with

Re: Wireless Lombard

2006-01-13 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters

The cisco card was from Ebay, check on the pc side instead of the
mac side. THe Belkin card I bought on sale at CompUSA ($10 after
rebates). Make sure not to get the v4000 model - evidently that
doesnt work on a mac (different chipset ?).

Every week CompUSA seems to be blowing out one wireless card or
another. Check to see if the card has mac drivers; sometimes they
do.

Thanks for ALL of the suggestions! I have a few directions to look into now.

Are they easy to setup once installed? I'm used to being hardwired
to my router!

The airport SW is the easiest, and the Belkin interface is sort of
clunky. Once you get it set up you really dont have to deal with it
at all. The Cisco SW isnt bad.

Well worth the prices I paid for them.

I did get one of the $5 CompUSA G cards (after rebate), which had a
chipset with a mac driver, but I couldnt get it to work. I was kind
of bummed out, $5 for a G card is a great deal.

Mad Dog, I never had any luck using anything other than
Broadcom/Airport combinations, but that's just me. For ease of use,
the Sonnet Aria or whatever Buffalo card has the Broadcom chipset is
best. The Aria can be found on OWC's site, if you don't mind
shelling out $70+shipping.

Just my humble opinion,

Re: G4 upgrade for Lombard?

Hi,

I seem to remember someone offering a G4/500 or 550 upgrade for the
Lombard series, but I can't seem to remember which company. I know
the WS I and II have available upgrades from Sonnet, but I'd like to
bump the Lombard up.

Also, are there any heat issues with Lombard/Pismo systems with G4 upgrades?

Caleb

www.daystartechnology.com and www.wgenermedia.com offer G4 upgrades
up to 433 MHz for the Lombard. I bought mine from daystar and it
runs cooler being a copper CPU. Their recent version of this upgrade
also contains a lombard heatsink with an extra slab of copper riveted
to the heatsink for extra thermal mass.

sorry for putting you through this again. Here goes:

If you get the battery to work properly you will be pleased with the

By the way, your questions were not stupid by any means! How else are you
going to find things out if you don't ask and this forum is one of the best

Re: Battery not charging properly.

2006-01-07 Thread Tom Ethen
Caleb,

I don't know what battery reset utility does, because it won't work with my
Pismo, but I do know that when I first got the battery from OWC it did not
charge at all for quite a while and then only a little bit even though the
lights stated otherwise. I then just left it for the weekend and was
planning on calling OWC to complain the following Monday. By Monday it was
fully charged and good to go and has worked ever since.

I know the batteries have a circuit board in them, as I tried to rebuild one
once, but couldn't figure out how to convince the circuit board that it now
had new cells installed and never could get it to work. I don't see how the
battery utility could break the battery, but I have heard that completely
draining them makes them act strange and possibly not function any longer.

If it is new, you should be able to send it back if you can't get it to work
and get a replacement if charging for a day or two doesn't work. If you got
it from OWC, they are very good about replacing items they sell that don't
function properly.

Re: WiFi Card

2006-01-04 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters

Hey Everybody especially Caleb and Mad Dog; If anyone is interested I
just picked up a Motorola WN825G wireless notebook adapter card from
Ebay and it is currently working in my 400MHZ Lombard and shows up as an
Airport card. I am using OS X.2.8. I got the card for $18.00 which was
not bad at all, but I didn't exactly like the shipping cost which was
$14.00 which I thought was rather steep for a Priority Mail package but
I never found any any cheaper so i went for it and now I no longer have
to deal with trying to find drivers for the PCMCIA card. The reason I
thought of trying this card is because I have a Motorola1810G PCI card
in my B&W as well as in my Sawtooth that also shows up as an Airport
Card, so I thought I had nothing to lose trying this one out. Good Luck
campers.
Mad Dog this might help you out.
Here's the information off my box:
p/n: 498518-001-00
s/n: 13510142583073700100
MAC: 00CE5527E07

Hope this helps
Brad

Thanks Brad. I filed this away for future use.

At no point am I getting any lights on the card so it is possible its
a bum card. The fact that Realtek has a mac driver is encouraging
 though.

The networking kernel stuff has substantially changed with 10.4 which might
explain why the driver won't work on 10.3.x...

Unfortunately I dont have an easy way to test the theory. If I find
time I can try installing 10.4 on another notebook.

Tom, try the IOXpert drivers, you can use them on a trial basis to

I installed the drivers, but that didnt seem to do anything.

Alternatively, poke around at the Windows drivers provided on the

contain the manufacturer identification.

Can I use Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate my G4 desktop (dual 450

panels)?

I use 10.3.9 on my wallstreet. It works quite well. More RAM is
better, and when running X, I recommend maxing out the RAM.

Re: wallstreet questions

2005-12-28 Thread Tom and Lisa Peters
First, I have no idea on whether a CD-RW was made for the
Wallstreet. I know the later Lombard and Pismo have aftermarket
Superdrives available, but I don't know about the WS or WSII.

Second, if I remember correctly, the Lombard and Wallstreet take the
same RAM, with the lower slot being replaceable by pulling the
daughtercard out and installing a "low-profile" chip. Someone who
knows more about the Wallstreet can feel free to correct this, but I
think it's replaceable. I know it is on a Lombard, though.

Caleb

There was at least one 3rd party CD-R or CD-RW drive made for the
wallstreet and you can find one on Ebay every now and then.

The WS also takes a lower RAM slot stick, just like the Lombard. Low-profile.

Re: Cleaning wipes for PB

Use either Klear Screen or HoodWipes, which were designed for cleaning the
screen and the HoodWipes work wonders on the outside of a laptop also.

Don't be such cheap skates, you get 12 HoodWipes for $11 and on my Pismo the
cleaning lasts for a month or so, on both the screen and the case.

I'm not saying that at all Clark (that it's only illegal if you get
caught). You made a statement that there were plenty of stories about
people getting busted for software piracy that used the "I didn't know
it was wrong" defense.

I challenged you to provide one instance where that had occurred as a
result of an individual user selling a computer with an unlicensed OS
on it. I've never heard of individuals being targetted by police or
other authorities for selling their own computer with an OS on it.
That doesn't make it right, and I'm not saying it's right.

Re: WSII won't see RAM in top slot

Interesting idea. Does a WS II CPU work on a WS I? I upgraded the
processor to the 292MHz limit after I bought the machine 'cause 233
was just too slwww.

What's BGA?

Jim Sanderson

A WS2 CPU will work fine on a WS1 motherboard. Just not the other way around.

BGA stands for Ball Grid Array which describes the method of
attachment of the CPU to the board. Its an array of tiny little
balls of metal. You cant rtework BGA at home; you need an expensive
pro rig for that.

WS on Jaguar

I remember when I had all sorts of issues with mine. All those
kinds problems went away with the upgrade to Panther. With the comp
not recognising the RAM, that's probably to do with the processor.
One person suggested now might be the time to take advantage of
Daystar's G4 upgrade. That's a good idea depending on the age of
the WS. Mine was among the first made, evidently and could not be
upgraded because of the type of video card, or so the good doctors
at Daystar told me. Because this one is a WS II, I doubt there
would be any problem.

Jim Sanderson

Daystar (or any other rework shop) has a harder time upgrading the
WS1 CPUs as the L2 cache parts are BGA, while the WS2 L2 cache parts
are quad flat (easier to rework). Find a cheap WS2 233/512K l2 CPU
card on ebay and send that in for upgrade.

I dont recall any serious issues. The DVD drives of the time have a
rate of failure that is noticeable. The batteries are also sometimes
difficult to get working (again, old age).

People have said the DVD chip on the motherboard does not work under X.

Re: Question re: buying a used Apple Laptop

2005-11-26 Thread Tom Ethen
My Pismo 500 G/3 is not as fast as my iBook 600 G/3 and that is the cold
hard fact. The Pismo is a great machine, but it is nowhere as portable as
the iBook 600, battery (on one battery) life is much less and WIFI
range is the same for both.

Re: Question re: buying a used Apple Laptop

2005-11-26 Thread Tom Ethen
I had a 2400c G/3 320 and it was pretty fast and small, but the battery life
forced me to get a G/3 600 iBook, dual USB and it is all I take on trips
now. It has great battery life, great WIFI range, is faster than the 2400c
and is much more convenient than the strange rear input panel the 2400c has.

That said, I did get another 2400c after I sold my G/3 320 for lots of
money, and play with it every once and a while even now.

I have had my iBook 600 for a couple of years now and so far no problems at
all.

both left them with the default name (Linksys) and if one of you names your

Re: Lombard/Tiger/Install Q's

2005-11-20 Thread Tom and Lisa P
Dave, why not into getting the L2 cache replaced ? Daystar or
Wegener can do it. With no L2 , X probably runs like a dog (a bad
dog at that).

Mad Dog

Hey Mad Dog,

I've been running 10.3.9 with a bad cache for 6 months. Actually
runs pretty good so have been content and can't complain.
Definitely not a dog but obviously could always be faster too. When
I need to get into more intensive work, I can simply jump to the
desktop. Fixing the Lombard also hasn't been in the budget as I
have been dedicating all my extra funds and energy into developing a
new computer product. Can't say what it is yet but hope to launch
soon. After it reaches the marketplace, I then hope to go out and
buy a new laptop. So until then, the Lombard will do.

I guess the big questions I still need to answer are: Will the
Lombard handle all the way up to 10.4.3? And, is it best to run
the updates from the Lombard itself or while the drive is in a
supported system? (That is, assuming I don't go the XPF route).

Thnx,

Dave

I think the cache upgrade is relatively cheap.

I havnt tried putting 10.4 on a lombard, but 10.3 on a wallstreet
using xp facto was fairly easy.

Re: Lombard/Tiger/Install Q's

2005-11-20 Thread Tom and Lisa P

Hey Will,

I seem to have a slight dilemma in regards to xpf.

It requires you to turn on the L2 Cache. Problem is, my L2 cache is
failed on my processor. So don't know where to go from here?

I wonder if XPF simply allows direct installation on the Lombard or
actually enables usage?

The known workaround for putting Tiger on Lombards is to simply
remove the hard drive, hook it up to a supported machine via
firewire or ide, and then do the install, then put the drive back in
the lombard. With my L2 cache issue, it may be best for me to go
this route unless there are other issues.

Still reading xpf info and forum to learn more.

Dave

Wegener can do it. With no L2 , X probably runs like a dog (a bad dog

Daystar Lombard upgrades

Daystar is offering a new Lombard upgrade; a G4/433 and 250 MHz L2
cache + improved heat sink for $300. You get a $55 rebate when you
send your old CPU and heatsink in.

I bought one of thier G4/466 Wallstreet upgrades and am very satisfied with it.

Re: Pismo screen, case, Belkin questions

2005-11-06 Thread Tom and Lisa P

Hello,
I have recently acquired a 500 mhz Pismo running 10.4.2 and would
appreciate members' opinions on the following:
2. The screen- When started the screen is suffused with a red color,
whether starting in Tiger or OS9.22. Then the red fades and the
screen takes on the usual display and behaves normally. Is this
vibrant red a sign of imminent screen failure and if so, what will
need replacement?

If I recall correctly, this indicates the backlight is failing. The
backlight can be replaced instead of the whole screen if you like to
tinker.

4. It came with a Belkin 54g F5D7010, 802.11g Wireless Notebook
Network PCMCIA Card, but when I insert it there is no indication
that it is seen, nor that Airport software works with it. Does
anyone use this wireless card who could tell me where to find more
information?

Thanks.

use of the 7010 requires Ralink drivers (see thier website), for use
in OS X. I dont remember if it has OS 9 drivers.

Good to know.

I put in an 80 gig 5400 Seagate in my Pismo, and so far it's quiet
and works fine.

The Momentus drives are almost totally quiet. Feels much faster than
a typical drive too, and it seems to run cool.

No devices on the ATA bus will work ... at all!

You cannot boot from the CD/DVD, even if that CD/DVD contains a system
installer, or even an "emergency" boot volume.

Re: recommendations for 3400?

2005-10-30 Thread Tom and Lisa P

Not really a G-book but close.
My sister has just come across a 200 Mhz 3400 with 80 Mb RAM and a
2 Gb hard drive.
She wants to do word processing, e-mail (with wireless card), light
web browsing and music downloading.
I suggested that music downloading wouldn't make sense with such a
small hard drive but that the other tasks should be possible.
I have a YDI diamond 802.11b card that works in a wallstreet or
Lombard with the stock Apple Airport extensions. Not sure if it will
work with the airport extensions in OS 8.6.

Questions:
Which OS, I'm thinking 8.6 or 9.1
Which browser?
Which e-mail client?

Thanks
Andrew in Ann Arbor
technology is the answer, what was the question?

Might as well go 9.1 for compatibility with some later browsers
(IIRC). For browsers, Netscape 4.78 would be the fastest, but least
compatible. Opera 6.03 is a compromise (but it isnt fast), and
Mozilla builds are the most compat. but the slowest.

Eudora Light is free and fast and easy.

Very much so ... as I stated in my initial reply.

That's odd. I thought the latest versions of OS X could not play DVDs on a
Lombard, only a Pismo? Which version of OS X are we talking about?

10.3.x or 10.4.x

Re: lombard DVD decoder

2005-10-15 Thread Tom and Lisa P

 > The built-in decoder works well.

DVD writing is reliable at 2X, usually reliably at 4X, and fails at
greater than 4X, and that failure is on account of the poor grounding
provided within the media bay itself. These same drives will not fail at
any speed if installed as directed, using an 80-wire/40-pin cable.

I thought the DVD DECODER was for reading movies ?

Why does a DVD DECODER impact writing DVDs ?

Re: lombard DVD decoder

2005-10-15 Thread Tom and Lisa P

 >Does the DVD decoder on the lombard motherboard work under X ?

If you mean the built-in decoder on the 400 MHz models, absolutely. (I
cannot comment on the 300 MHz models).

You may need to use PatchBurn if you have updated your media bay to
include a CD/DVD-ROM-R-R/W drive.

With the super drives which are in the distributor inventory right now,
mainly the Pioneer DVR-K05 and Panasonic UJ-845S, you will probably have
to use PatchBurn in order to cover all variations of DVD media.

So you can buy one of these mechanisms and swap it with the old one
on the housing ?
