USB Connector

2005-03-03 Thread invicta
Hello All,
I need a USB to Headset connector ( adaptor ) sothat I can connect my
headset to my ALPB 17 when using Scype. The headset has two
connectors, one for the headphone and one for the mic. When I connect
the headset to the laptop I insert the headphone connector in the
headphone jack and the mic connector in the audio line-in jack. The
headphone works but the mic of the headset is dead. Sound manager is
adjusted to Audio line-in port and Headphone line-in port. In a forum
of Skype I Read that I should use the adaptor described above however
phoning two computer shops drew a blank. They claim never having heard
about such an adaptor. Does it exist ?

Greetings Andre.

I've lived with the 12 for over a year, and a number of other 1024X768
laptops before that (not to mention the older 800X600 and even 640X400
models), so I guess I'm used to the amount of real estate I have.
I was seriously thinking about moving up to the 15 this time, but the
small
size and light weight won out again when I saw them side-by-side.

Andrew
Alright, I'm thinking to replace my 17 PB with the new 12 PB and
having a 20 Cinema Monitor for my desk. What is the max resolution on
the monitor when connected to the PB ? The 17 is too unwieldy and
heavy for my limitations in moving on one leg !

TIA for your insights. Andre.

I looked at the 15 and 17 but in the end bought a 12 and have been
enjoying it since. I use a Booq bag that is great and holds the laptop
vertical instead of the normal horizontal so I find it easy to carry
around.
Is the resolution of the 12 PB ( 1024 x 768 ) limiting the resolution
( 1280 x 854 ) of the 20 monitor, when run in desktop mode with the
12. If so what are the disadvantages ?

complete clean reinstall of OS X. Fast forward
I took my iPod and plugged it in, it loaded iTunes, and thinking this

That sounds like a loose keyboard connector. Time to call AppleCare,
since in the Al series the kb isn't user-serviceable, iirc.
To check this assumption I carefully tapped the front two corners
vertically on my 'real' desktop. I chose the front as normally one
closes the PB by turning it on it's small back so tapping in the
opposite direction might 'reset' the connection.

Assumption confirmed, the keyboard works.
I have to inform Laurent that the PB 17 has no little switch to lift
the keyboard out. I have the service doc on my PB but the accessibility
is daunting so Ill check first with AppleCare as we have an Apple Store
in the neighborhood who might fix this at short notice.

Shall report on the outcome.
Many thanks and greetings, Andre.

bottom part stays rather hot. Temperature seems to be a negative
influence on the life of the battery. IMO there are only two choices;
stop folding or remove the battery when the PB is used in desktop mode.

Here is the lowdown I found on Lithium based batteries;

Battery Query.

2004-06-19 Thread invicta
Hello All,
I'm using my 17 PB 3/4 of the time as a desktop machine connected to
the power adaptor. I read somewhere that it would prolong battery life
if you removed the battery when connected to the adaptor. The battery
would not be continuously charged.

Any advice?
TIA, greetings, Andre

Airport trouble.

2004-06-13 Thread invicta
Hello All,
This morning I had to restore my OS X 10.3.4 system because of printer
problems. All went well but I lost my Airportnet connection. I'm asked
the password I have used when I installed the base station. Since than
I have changed this password but it is being refused asking for the
original one which I lost. On the keychain I find the latest password
but that doesn't work. The rest of the home network is OK and working,
only I cannot access it by lack of the proper password.

What to do?
TIA and dreetings, Andre.

Easiest thing: reset the base station. Instructions for the 'snow' BS
are
here:

- and you'll find instructions for the others close by on the Apple

I've only used an ABS for a few minutes once, but I THINK you can
choose
from 11 different wireless frequencies by using the ABS setup software
you
use to set up passwords, etc. I know you can do this on 3rd party
models.
This might help if you have something else competing on the same
frequency.

Paul
Do you mean channels? I can not find frequencies. I'm now on channel 10
of 11 available.

Greetings, Andre.
Hey Andre,

So how are you set up and how do you use it exactly? Do you back up
to an
external or is this in a desktop backing up from internal HD to
internal HD?
What is yoru picture?

Run
Set up is as follows: Source is PB 17 1.5 GB Ram running OS X v.10.3.3
and Target is external 160 GB FW HD Porsche Design. This external HD I
share with my wife by installing two partitions. This way we can backup
both her FP 800 MHz 1 GB iMac and my PB, alternatively, as targetted to
the appropriate partition. I have also installed the latest PsyncX for
proper synchronization. Everything works smoothly now for about 8
months, as I said.

Have you tried switching the frequency on your ABS, or tried the
interference robustness option on your laptop? They may not work,
but
they're free, so they couldn't hurt.

The other option might be to buy another brand of wireless router with
an
adjustable antenna. They are much cheaper then any of the ABS antenna
options, and most include 4 wired connections for other computers. I
have =
a
D-Link that can be found for around $30 on sale.

Paul
Yes Paul, I tried 'interference robustness but no difference. Where
can I change the frequency on my ABSE ? If it's free I certainly would
like to try it.

To buy another wireless router is for the time being no option. Want to
try other options first with my present ABSE.

On the card inside the ABS there is a small plug on the end, which if
removed will show a connector for an external antenna such as the one
inside
a PowerBook. You can purchase the connector that goes from the card
which
has a connector for a CB antenna on the other end(I got one on ebay
quite a
while ago), which will give you range of between one half and two
miles if
the antenna is placed high enough. You will have to modify the ABS
case to
allow the cable to extend outside to be able to attach the external
antenna.
There are also commercial antennas available for ABS which already
have the
correct connector to plug onto your Airport card.

Tom
Thank you Tom. Could you direct me to a source of such a commercial
antenna supplier? I vaguely remember an offer sometime back, before I
went wireless, where you had to drill a hole through the outer casing
of the ABS Extreme to accommodate the lead to the external antenna. The
name and address escapes me.

Andre.

WiFi range?

2004-05-08 Thread invicta
Hello All,

Having trouble with my wireless range.

Set up: DSL modem in the hall Airport Base Extreme in the study at 6
m. distance from the modem 17 PB running OS X v. 10.3.3. The APBE is
mounted on the side of a wooden cupboard ± 2 m. from floor level and
facing at 1.5 m. a window out to the garden. Signal level shows 12 of
the 15 dots lighted. Building is bungalow type with brick walls.

I know that range is influenced by many factors but I would expect a
range in my garden to reach 25 m. but it doesn't. My Kensington WiFi
finder also does not recognize the base station at this distance.

Any advice?

TIA, greetings, Andre.

Re: Video Stream Messages.

2004-03-28 Thread invicta
I just heard that you can attach a video stream to an e-mail but only
in Windoze, not Mac's. Is this correct and why?
Greetings, Andre

What do you mean exaclty by video stream? A video stream is usually a
server providing video over the network while the client plays it in
real
time. Usually, that means providing the URL to the server's video
stream.
So, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to provide a URL
in an
email. If you mean being able to play the video from the email
application
you're using, then you may be right. I only used Entourage so far and
it
hasn't the ability to play video streams from an email. Maybe another
email
application on the Mac would be able to do it. In any case, it's
usually
just a matter of copying the URL to the video stream into your browser.

If by video stream you mean attaching the video file to the message,
then,
again, I don't see why you would be able to do it from Windows but not
from
the Mac. It would depend on the size of the file and whether your ISP
limits
the size of emails you can send.

-Laurent.
Thank you Laurent for your elucidations. It's clear now.

Greetings, Andre.

You can't. The airport USB is a print server only. There are two
ways to do what you want. One is to connect the scanner to another
computer and share it that way. This is dependent on the scanner
software having a sharing feature. Keyspan has a device called a
USB Server http://www.keyspan.com/news/news.040108USBServer.spml.
They were showing it at MacWorld San Francisco but it doesn't look
as if it's released yet.

Thank you Clark, very much. Greetings, Andre
In Panther, one is supposed to be able to share scanners (and digital
cameras) through Image Capture. If you have a desktop machine running
Panther, and your Powerbook is also on Panther, then you may be able
to achieve scanner sharing that way. Just set the preferences in
Image capture to share devices in one mac and to look for shared
devices in the other.
I have tried to do it myself, to see if it would work. I was able to
share my digital camera, but my scanner (actually an hp
printer/scanner/copier) could not be shared (it did not even appear
in the list of shareable devices in Image Capture). This was not a
total surprise, because hp explicitly states that this psc 750 is not
networkable (and it does not even work as a shared printer with usb
print sharing :-(). Depending on the scanner model that you have, you
might have more luck.
I can't help expressing my admiration for Rendezvous... I could see
my (Powerbook connected)digital camera pictures in Safari (running in
my kids' BW) by just selecting it from the Rendezvous tab... no need
to look for addresses, etc. (though it also works with
http:/address.of.sharing.mac:5100). Amazing!
Luis

Thank you All. New openings I will certainly try.

Greetings, Andre.

Scanner repetition?

2004-03-22 Thread invicta
Hello All,

Not long ago I posted a query but did not get any reaction. Probably
wrongly worded. So I will refraze:

Setup: DSL modem Wan port of Airbase Extreme LAN to ethernet hub
connecting to the cabled homenet. The Airport Extreme has a UBS Printer
outlet. Connecting my Canon i550 BJ printer works smoothly and the
machine is shared in the network.

So I tried to connect the Canon 500F scanner through the intermediary
of a USB hub with the printer to the printer outlet of the base
station. No response. How can I connect the scanner permanently to my
network.

My computer is a 17 PB elevated to desktop status bij a Griifin
iCurve assisted by a wireless keyboard and Pro mouse but on the move as
well so I would not like to use its USB port for the scanner.

Can anyone offer a solution?

TIA and greetings, Andre.

Mail issues.

2004-03-07 Thread invicta
Running OS X v, 10.3.2 on my 17 PB with Mail 1.3

Mail repeatedly asks for my password in spite of my asking to remember
it. Had this problem a few week back but the trick advised by one of
you guru's then does not work anymore.
This trick was: ~ library keychain thrashing the doc. with my small
name on it, restarting and once more giving my password. Now I can only
find a doc. with 'login.keychain' as title and thrashing this does not
solve the issue.

Can anybody help me? Greetings, Andre.

M
Had the same problem with my 17'' PB. This won't boot off the CD as the
system is lower than 10.2.6 The G4 iBook might have the same problem.
Phoned AppleCare and got an 'upgraded' TTdL CD within a week. All clear
now. Somebody must have been asleep at the Care Center, which can
happen if there is not much to do.

My excuses for approaching the wrong list as well as spelling Trouble

Thank you both Laurent and Eric for your quick reactions. Found out

Thank you for your input.

CCC Truble.

2004-02-13 Thread invicta
Hello All,

Today I cloned with the help of CCC one iMac Rev C 400 MHz running OS X
v.10.3 on a FlatPannel 15 800 MHz iMac running also OS X v. 10.3
Everything went smoothly and CCC reported after 45 minutes that the job
was done.

When I restarted the target machine ( FlatPannel ) everything looked
alright and the window opened, asking for Name and Password. When these
were entered the machine 'shuddered' and stayed where it was. When we
checked the source machine, Name and Password opened the HD without
'shuddering'. Is this a joke? How to get around it?

TIA and greetings, Andre.

Still struggling with my new PowerBook.

2004-02-11 Thread invicta
Hello All,

My new 17 G4 PowerBook is still fighting me. Earlier I reported about
TT de Luxe supplied by AppleCare won't do its work and though I called
AppleCare last monday they have not reacted yet with a solution.

Yesterday I found out that my Canon 5000F scanner and my i550 printer
won't do their work. Refreshed the drivers but still no go. On my
trusted 15 Flatpannel 800 MHz also running OS X v.10.3 no problem
whatsoever.

The latest surprise was that this machine refuses to clear the PRAM by
pushing Ctrl+Alt+P+R at restart. It chimes only once whilst I'm holding
the keys and does its normal startup. Tried three times. My friend the
Flatpannel does it by the book.

Any solutions for these problems. I'm still waiting for reactions from
Canon.

This PowerBook is full of surprises, though it is a beautiful machine.

Can anybody help me with an explanation and possible solution?

Greetings, Andre.

Hi Laurent,

I'd be willing, albeit with great pain, to trade you my PowerBook G3 for
your G4 if you want. I don't have any problem zapping the PRAM and it
also
runs 10.3.2 and is beautiful. Let me know what you think...

Well, it's a different machine. I won't consider your offer before I
find the reason for my problems.

Strange Riddle.

2004-02-07 Thread invicta
Hello All,

Got my 17 PowerBook a few days ago and wanted to play with the
TechTools de Luxe CD that was supplied with AppleCare. It appeared on
the desk top, I could open it but when I restarted with C it started to
make the usual driver noises but stopped after about 1 minute with a
blue Screen. Every attempt ended the same way whereas my Flattop 15
iMac had no problems arriving at the working stage. Then I tried my DW
v.3 same situation, not finalizing installation from C. Talked and
exercised for close to an hour with the AppleCare Helpdesk, no
solution. Both CD's work allright on both my flattop aswell as my
wife's iMac SE.

They proposed to replace TechTool so I said what about DW. Now I'm
stuck and cannot use either of these CD's on my PowerBook for good
housekeeping. Has anybody encountered such a situation and what would
be the solution.

Greetings, Andre.

Upgrading.

2004-01-24 Thread invicta
Hello All,

I'm a new subscriber, living in the Netherlands and using Mac's since
'89 but never owned a laptop. To clarify my alias in my e-mail address,
I'm also a fervent fly fisher and Invicta is a well-known wetfly.

My present home-system is ADSL ethernet modem Vigor 2200E router
and one Flatpanel 800 Mhz iMac, 1 GB SDRam, running OS X v. 10.3. My
wife has an 400 Mhz SE iMac connected to the same router aswell as a
spritly SE/30 with OS 7.5 and 128 MB, to play with.

We decided to acquire an iSight to communicate with my son in Needham,
USA who has a G 4 iBook, 14, 933 Mhz, 640 SO-DIMM also running OS X v.
10.3.

As the 400 Mhz iMac is too slow for iSight I decided to give my
Flatpanel iMac to my wife and get a 17 Powerbook for myself. To make
the powerbook free from cables I intend to install an Airport base
station without modem connected to one free portal of my router. The
laptop can than be moved around in the house and in the garden aswell,
weather permitting.

Would this setup have your approval or have I forgotten some or more
things?

Thank you for your help, greetings, Andre.
