I also can't imagine that they'd make even a tiny effort to keep it from working either. Again, why should they...it's just a tiny fraction of the market. People wanting to run Linux on VPC on a Mac aren't even a nuisance to MS...not even a curiosity. As far as I understand it, MS's main reason for buying VPC was, as an earlier poster said, for its virtual server potential - the ability to run several Windows servers on one machine, possibly on several different versions of Windows. Without getting into black helicopters territory, it does seems plausible that they wouldn't like the idea of someone running a Windows server thinking hey, with VPC I could also run linux with Apache on this machine, instead of paying out for IIS. So there could be a business case, in their eyes, for disabling linux support. Anyway, we'll find out :) TimH -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Are you seriously telling me that you think M$ will sell a version of VPC that will allow faultless running of Linux etc ? I am of the opinion that they will. They may not go out of their way to actively support it, but I don't believe that they will actively make something not work. Maybe I'm a bit of an optimist, but look at it this way. If it doesn't run Linux, or something besides an MS operating system, they get no sales of the product for that particular user. I'd think they'd rather have a small piece of the pie rather than nothing. Steve -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Looking at Microsoft's products that are coming up, one of the things they are releasing is a server virtualization product that allows you to run 4 or 5 separate smaller instances of Windows on one larger box to aid with server consolidation, especially in shops with large amounts of legacy applications. Connectix was working on a lot of the same technology, and I would guess that was the main reason that they grabbed the product: it gave them the bulk of the work in a cheaper way than it would to do the development from scratch, as well as a bunch of patents. I think a lot of us have noticed a pattern of Microsoft promising the world and then not delivering it... so when they do it again, yeah, I tend to think it's a pattern of behavior. One thing that is undeniable is that they are putting the screws to those who want to use their own version of Windows with VPC by delaying the release of the VPC without an OS. If you are selling VPC with Windows XP SP2 then there's 0 reason why you can't sell VPC without Windows If you have VPC ready to ship but are waiting for SP2 to be released, there's still no reason why you can't release the Windows 2000 version or the version without an OS. And they advertise VPC 6 as only working with Win2000 and WinXP, when in fact it will work with 95 and 98 as well. Then there's the reality that for every satisfied VPC user there's less of a need for them to run Windows. It's possible that it was a time crunch (although they delayed VPC by a significant amount of time, and then said it was Done, but we're not shipping it yet), so that really doesn't seem likely. One of the things that I am waiting for as well. If you have VPC ready to ship but are waiting for SP2 to be released, there's still no reason why you can't release the Windows 2000 version or the version without an OS. I disagree there, if for no other reason that they wanted to test compatibility with SP2 before they released it. I think that made sense. It's the same binary with a different OS image file. And they advertise VPC 6 as only working with Win2000 and WinXP, when in fact it will work with 95 and 98 as well. Agreed it will work, but 95 and 98 aren't what they consider supported OSes for the most part. Marketers suck ;) ps - btw I fully expect that Longhorn will have some kind of integrated VPC (ala Carbon) if Microsoft follows through on their plan to break all existing Windows programs for it... There are products in beta that let you run multiple virtual servers on top of Windows 2003. I can see them integrating some of that, but then again, they may want to charge extra for that feature set, like they do now with terminal services. Re: Anyone here use virtual PC?
If you are selling VPC with Windows XP SP2 then there's 0 reason why you can't sell VPC without Windows If you have VPC ready to ship but are waiting for SP2 to be released, there's still no reason why you can't release the Windows 2000 version or the version without an OS. There are many reasons. Think of the buyers (or even sellers) who don't see the difference and purchase a Virtual PC version without an operating system. Think of the buyers who purchase the Windows 2000 version. Why do they have to be punished running an older (MUCH older, as a matter of fact) system? Will they receive XP upgrade later? I think with the amount of security issues plaguing Windows these days, that was actually a right move. Whether or not Service Pack 2 delivers security, that's another matter. And they advertise VPC 6 as only working with Win2000 and WinXP, when in fact it will work with 95 and 98 as well. AFAIR Windows 95 and 98 are discontinued, so are you really that surprised? DOS and probably other operating systems probably also work, but people are on their own when using them, and this is understandable. Also, they might not have been tested thoroughly, for obvious reasons. Then there's the reality that for every satisfied VPC user there's less of a need for them to run Windows. It's not that easy. First of all, every satisfied VPC user has to have Windows license anyway. Second of all, if somebody likes what they see, they might switch to PCs in the next round. ps - btw I fully expect that Longhorn will have some kind of integrated VPC (ala Carbon) if Microsoft follows through on their plan to break all existing Windows programs for it... Re: Anyone here use virtual PC?
Yes, the trick is to put your VPC Scripts somewhere other than in your user's documents folder. I keep my scripts on a completely different hard drive (using my desktop), though any shared folder would be fine. Just double click on the actual PC (VPC document) to launch it. I have the Applescript menu on my menubar and put an alias to each PC in the scripts folder. Much like the old Apple menu in classic Mac OS, I use the script menu as a launcher. You can also put your PCs on the dock and launch them that way, though you will have to set it up for each user. Graphics requirements and Copy-protection schemes on install CDs tend to be the biggest bugaboos. I search periodically for info on this topis, but no one's (yet?) put anything substantive on a site. The game installed just fine, no issues on that front. First problem to poke it's head out was a message saying that directX 7.something or another wasn't compatible with my version of windows. I got around this by installing a newer version of directX (8.0a). After it was installed I loaded the game, it asked me if I wanted to register, and after that the program just seemed to disapear from the screen. No error message. This is a similar issue to when I was using an old 333mHz machine without a vid card. Once I got a vid card it ran perfectly, even though the game is technically supposed to run without a vid card installed. I therefore assume it's a vid card issue, but am not completely sure. Here's a link about a guy with about 50 OS's installed using VPC on a 17 'book. http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/vpc/ I have not tried VPC 7 but have never had issues installing any OS on VPC 6 and unless someone gives me a G5 system, I guess I won't be needing VPC 7 anytime soon. I remember using VPC 5 (I think) which recognized my 3DFX card on a PM8600/250 so I could play Pandemonium using the card for hardware acceleration, glide drivers worked on Win98. Re: Anyone here use virtual PC?
Obviously they didn't disable the program too much, everything so far except networking and sound are just fine, and networking is fine if I connect to ethernet, just not over wireless. This is strange because in Windows 98 or Windows 2000, the VPC doesn't care if I use wireless or wired ethernet to connect to the internet, it just works. Andrew On 10/11/04 8:02 PM, Dennis B. Re: Anyone here use virtual PC?
Thanks, that did the trick- I'm now running Win 2K pro on my ibook, and it seems to be running great. One thing though, I wouldn't really call it a problem, since I'm sure that VPC wasn't designed with this in mind, but I'd like to know what I can do jsut the same: I'd like to run an older game, five years old to be exact, and the VPC software doesn't seem to be recognizing my vid card as a 3D card. I'm quite aware that VPC wasn't intedned as a gaming platform, but I had hoped to also use it to run my very old copy of Starfleet Command. I'm not certain this is the issue, but this IS how it acted when I was on my old PC that had no vid card. Brian I recently solved this problem by finding a floppy image for Win98 which allowed me to install Win95 too. You have to mount the floppy image first, then make sure the CD is captured, then restart. It took some doing but I did get it to work. NOTE: after installation, be sure to enable undo drives. Excellent feature. Also, I am doing to save copies of the VPC6 files to DVD so that I won't have to start all over again if/when something goes really wrong. However, it won't help any. I think all VPC emulates non-accelerated video card. Games are going to suck performance wise. Steve -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... My understanding is that most of the video stuff didn't make it into VPC7 (at least with this initial release). Steve -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
