If the message does show up - you know you are subscribed and have
also contributed something meaningful to the group at the same time.

There's just one little problem, Amber. I'm receiving list mail from
both the old group and the new group -- and that's quite OK, since I'm still
subscribed to both.

However, when I try to post from the address I'm using right now, Google
groups bounces it back to me and claims I'm not subscribed -- even though
they're sending me list mail.

I'll give this another week and then just unsub if it's not fixed. I
mean, what's the sense in being subscribed if I can't post?

The big quirk with Google Groups is that when you make a post, it
won't send it to your inbox. It goes to the rest of the world, but it
refuses to send you a copy of your own post.

Yahoo groups does the same thing. But you can always sign in to your
account on either system and see your post in the list of posts, if
you question whether or not your post went thru.

A lot faster, given the low RAM ceiling of the WS and WSII.

Why am I still getting messages from maclaunch if the list

what I get from google is test, test, test.

Also, Why all this talk about who said what that was inappropriate

Hello Woody,

On 25-Feb-06, at 6:09 AM, woodyduncan wrote:

You need to unsubscribe from the MacLaunch lists if you wish to leave
them. To do so, all you have to do is look at the footer of this
message and click on the link. It will open a new e-mail for you and
from there you just hit send and presto, you'll be unsubscribed.

I have four messages this
morning from maclaunch, and none from google. Mostly
what I get from google is test, test, test.

Sorry...we have asked people not to send test messages to the list
and they continue to do so.
There is not much we can do about it at this point except continue to
ask people not to send test messages to the group. As Dan Knight
recently noted, test messages waste bandwidth and are frustrating to
the list membership as a whole. Just post your comments to the
group - if they don't show up, contact one of the list nannies for
assistance - OFF LIST and we will respond ASAP.

Also, Why all this talk about who said what that was inappropriate
back when ?

Unfortunately, new incidents sometimes spark old discussions and
everything gets dredged up again. If it becomes abusive and/or
inappropriate, or the list nannies ask for it to stop and people
ignore those requests, they can expect to face a temporary suspension.

I was hoping for discussion of some computer
related topics. I do appreciate the time people give of themselves
to help others. But, I mostly ask questions because I'm such a
newbie at this tech stuff. I provide answers and advice on
other lists where I have a bit of experience.

I honestly appreciate the input of those members on the list who
genuinely want to use it for the purpose for which it was intended -
discussion of computer related topics. This is one of the primary
reasons that we have list nannies/managers - to oversee the groups
and isolate the disruptive few so that the rest of you can enjoy
these discussions.

Thanks for your input Woody - please keep asking questions,

Check with a local Apple dealer or Apple Store. They'll probably be

You must have a friend, somewhere, with broadband. Back in the Dark Ages
(before I got some high-speed at home), I'd routinely pack up my Cube and
just take it over to a friend's house. We'd have some beer pizza, get the
thing fully updated, and that'd be that. It's good to socialize, sometimes
:)

I've got a reply from their customer relation. They said that they were
evaluating the rewrite of their web site after complaints they got. So, it
might get accessible for non-Windows users at some point.

It seems like mass action on the part of Mac users is effective. If

If you left the lombard unplugged with the dead battery in it, how
did the battery get charged ?

What exactly was the symptom of the dead battery ?

Mad Dog

The battery had a full charge before it started acting weird. It
would show no charge on the lights and a full charge according to the
OS, then it'd show nothing on the OS and full according to the LEDs.
It was plugged in for three weeks non-stop, before I left it sitting
out, so that could've been a contributor, as well.

Yes to all.

That's my only problem that I've run into when using my Lombard as a

Re: connecting at an iCafe

2006-02-21 Thread Bruce Johnson

On Feb 21, 2006, at 8:36 AM, Peter Saint James wrote:

have never seen anyone do, and I wonder why. Can't they just look
up these setting on one of their machines in the Windows equivalent
of System Preferences?

If it's possible, where is the information? I assume it's in the
Control Panel somewhere. Probably under network, right?

If your computer cannot figure those things out, it cannot connect,
and those numbers are not on your system anywhere.

Hoo, boy, some basics:

Those are the critical addresses needed for your computer to navigate
the internet.

IP Address. Every system connected to the internet needs one of
these, and it needs to be unique. This is typically expressed as a
number like: 192.168.134.72

This is KIND of like stating my street address as:

Arizona.Tucson.85721.1703 East Mabel Street

The farther to the left the number the wider an area it covers.

Since the IP protocol was designed to facilitate a network of
networks (what the Internet really is is a vast collection of
mutually cooperating, smaller local networks) your computer needs to
know who is 'local' and who isn't.

The Subnet Mask (typically a number like 255.255.255.0 or any number
of combinations like that) is a numerical construct, that when OR'ed
(a computer operation) against an IP address tells the system whether
it's local or not.

If it's local, it can contact the system directly. If it isn't, it
needs to contact the outside world.

You do that through the Gateway, which is your local network's 'door'
to the rest of the internet.

The DNS address is actually a later innovation (the seminal paper
describing TCP/IP by Cerf and Kahn was published in 1974 http://
tinyurl.com/e94ne http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCP-IP, DNS not
until 1983 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System) that
allowed us to attach names www.google.com, to IP addresses :

dbdev2:~/Desktop/wikicalc johnson$ host www.google.com
www.google.com is an alias for www.l.google.com.
www.l.google.com has address 66.102.7.104
www.l.google.com has address 66.102.7.147
www.l.google.com has address 66.102.7.99

That is the result of using a DNS server, the last bit you need, is
the system that translates (or facilitates the translation of) that
name: www.google.com to an address the computer can actually use:
66.102.7.104

There are two ways (three-ish, actually) to get these addresses to
your computer:

DHCP and Manual, the two choices you have in your networking control
panel or preferences.

A DHCP server sits on a local network and waits for computers to say,
essentially, help! where am I? Who am I? Where is the rest of the
world? This uses a lower level of networking than TCP/IP to
accomplish, and will only work on a local network. The DHCP server
then checks to see if it's allowed to talk to your computer, and if
so, tells it those four vital numbers it needs.

This is how home cable routers work, in fact.

The other way, Manual, needs a human who knows this, and so needs a
geek handy.

The -ish way is Bonjour, ex-Rendezvous, aka ZeroConf http://
www.zeroconf.org/, which is an Appletalk-ish self discovery
mechanism where by computers local to each other can trade this
information around, without the need for a DHCP server. They can at
least talk to each other, but at least ONE of them needs to know how
to get out, if any of them are to do so.

So when you go to an internet cafe, one of three things will happen:

Your computer is set to DHCP, and the server gives you an address,
and all is happy happy.

Your computer is set to DHCP, but the server doesn't recognize you,
and won't give you the addressess. Not happy happy.

Your computer needs to be set to manual, and given an address by a geek.

If Google claims ownership of the comments made on the list, moving
to Google is a bad idea. Let's call it off.

This is the worst reason I've seen yet for avoiding Google Groups. If
either of you actually checked the Google Groups website you would
have notice the following in section 7 Proprietary Rights subsection
Your Rights on the Terms of Use page
http://groups.google.com/googlegroups/terms_of_service.html
Google claims no ownership or control over any Content submitted,
Posted or displayed by you on or through the Service. You or a third
party licensor, as appropriate, retain all patent, trademark and
copyright to any Content... And it goes on to explain just what
Google will do with your content. If you are worried about such things
go and read up on them before making assumptions and spreading panic.

There is no difference between Google, Yahoo, the company that
currently runs the LEM mailing lists or any other internet company
except for Google trying to do the right thing as a company policy no
matter the cost. The government can demand any information from any
internet company. Google only made the news because they refused, the
others handed the information over. Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft and others
have attempted to add wording to their licenses to give them ownership
of their users content. Every time people have objected and the
wording has been changed. The very idea that a content distributor can
own your content is absurd, though we have to endure this petty
argument every so often.

If anyone is really worried about Google doing bad things with your
content or information go read the Terms of Use and Privacy documents
for them and their competitors. You might be surprised at how similar
they all are. You might also be surprised at how honest Google is
about what information they collect and just how they use it. All
websites collect information on the people that use them. It takes
effort not to collect information.

And in regards to all the complaints about subscribing to the Google
Groups. I subscribed using an old version of Safari and my Yahoo
account quite easily. Go to the group page, click the link Join this
group, click Sign up now to create a new account if you don't have
one and follow the directions. I never had to send a single email and
I can pick how I want to get email from the group. Any time you want
to change your subscription go back to the group page and select the
link Unsubscribe or change membership. Except for the sign up page
everything works just fine with a plain text browser, even good old
Lynx.

Re: accessing mpeg video files on OS X ?

2006-02-20 Thread Luis Sequeira

The most flexible way will cost you $20 - that' s the price of
Apple's QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component.
With that installed, you can use the wonder - and free - program
MPEG Stream Clip to export the video to dv.

Hi Luis,

If I buy this MPEG2 Playback component, will I then definitely be
able to convert the MPEG video to DV ?

Will it convert any MPEG video file or just certain ones ?

Amber

I have this component installed and I can convert MPEG2 files to dv,
to quicktime movies, etc., using the free MPEG Stream Clip.
For using with iMovie, either export directly to DV (File-Export to
DV...) or export to Quicktime and select the appropriate DV codec.

I can also view these MPEG2 files (but not edit them) in QuickTime
Player
(which is why they call it *playback* component; even QT PRO - which
I have - cannot edit MPEG2).

Of course, I cannot guarantee that this will work with *any* files;
but since you can already play your files, you can probably confirm
in VLC if they are indeed MPEG2 and,

if so, this procedure will most likely work.

Re: formatting zip disks in Pismo (OS 10.4)?

I opened disk utility and could see the zip disk and erase it but
couldn't change the format.

Is this even possible?
Perhaps all zip disks are DOS formatted?
For that matter is there any advantage to one format over the other?

When you look in Disk utility you see the device and the volume.

For example, if I fire up Disk Utility I see:

37.3 GB Prolific PL3507 Combo device
Pocket Rocket

That's my 2.5 Firewire external drive. 37.3 GB Prolific is the
device, Pocket Rocket is the volume on that formatted device. I can
change the format of DOS formatted devices, but not DOS formatted
volumes.

If it were DOS formatted, and I select Pocket Rocket all I can do
is reformat it as MS DOS. If I select 37.3 GB Prolific... I can
select Mac HFS+ or any other supported format.

That said, DOS formatting is likely the most useful, since it's then
readable on multiple plateforms, and HFS+ doesn't get you anything
more on a 100MB disk.

You should be able to formate them for the Mac using ZipTools. Unless
they were Mac formated at the factory, they usually come in DOS or a
cross platform DOS/UNIX format that's readable by pre-OS X Macs and
PCs... you can read/write to that formate but not run first aid/disk
recovery programs on those disks.
You usually need to find a Windows machine to formate (deeper than
initialize) the Zip disks in DOS.

You probably didn't get far enough as there is no way you can have ActiveX
running in Safari under OS X 10.3.9. ActiveX is a plugin available only for

Well, Safari was working. Now it only loads part of the page and then does

I will try Firefox and see what happens. But not even software update works.

None of Apple's OS X internet-based applications (like Mail, Safari,

I've reinstalled 10.4 to no avail, yet works in OS 9. I tried Netscape in

[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] seems to

I started the letter with a quote of their line about not supporting

the browsers are industry standard. I ended my complaint with:

I guess I stop buying Stonyfield products--they're obviously not

I had a similar thing hapen last year with OS 10.3.9 eventually I
had to reinstall the entire operating system... never found out what
caused it... happened on the internal drive AND an external firewire
drive 4 times over a two week span!
Our best guess is that one of the cats torqued the case while it was
running (12 lbs of cat on a 17 case supported by the pins of a 12
laptop stand) and caused a motherboard problem that resulted in system
level data damage... was visible in a DiskWarrior graph and always in
approximately the same places.

Well my bloody stupid bank does. Presumably, 'for reasons of

instead of being able to log in using the most secure system, I
have to use the most insecure system, and as well I have to use a
public computer to do that. They advise you not to use public
computers! I ain' gunna buy one of them machines just because the
bank would like me to. I wonder if the bank got a cut on a windows
installation if they kept their website 'pure'?

My bank, Regions (formerly Union Planters here in Florida) TOTALLY
supports Safari, Firefox and OmniWeb as well as Internet Explorer.
Personally, I'd find a new bank. My wife works for them too. She
says the IT department, with which she works closely and is able give
input (she's a Branch Manager), strives to be compatible with ALL
browsers and platforms. They want everybody's business! Banking via
website lowers operating costs and also saves the customer money. Of
course Regions is one of the most advanced Banks in the SouthEast as
far as software and hardware. Though their systems run on Windows
Servers. I'd certainly seek out another bank.
I look at it this way, if they don't want to accommodate you, I
certainly wouldn't give them my business...remember, they're making
money off of you.

I find that with USBank, even when I log off properly in Safari
(even the latest one), I often get stuck in a loop where I just get
the your session has timed out screen unless I manually search
for and delete all USBank cookies. (It sure would be nice to have a
search feature within the cookies list!).

Some other banks or credit card sites give me a window telling me
my browser is not compatible, but if I click Continue it works just
fine.

Regards,

Harry Corsover

Follow up on that: AmEx's site works fine with Safari and so does
Bank of America. For that matter the state of Florida's website
works fine too. We have a thing called SunPass that allows you to
pass through toll plazas without having to stop and it debits via a
little box. Go to the website to put more money on it and I usually
use Safarinot one problem. As a matter of fact I do EVERY form
of financial transaction exclusively using the web. I haven't
written a check in years (about 5). Guess I've just been lucky
enough to do my transactions with progressive companies...oh, my
insurance company, Progressive, is totally Mac compatible.

It isn't a matter of supporting Macs but of supporting standards for
HTML. The idea that a web site has to be all bells and whistles is
absurd. There was a period where every time I went surfing I'd hit
at least one site that needed the latest version of flash or some
other crud just so they can have flames or something stupid on the

slowed somewhat so you have a chance really doing something most of

course, the whole bloat mess has really irritated me to no end,

It's really a pity that developers are so lazy that they code for only a

but the dominance of Windows and the constant push from Microsoft with their
specific extensions to the HTML language has skewed the direction of the
Internet and many websites only assume that you're running Windows and using
Internet Exploiter...

If you can enable the debug option in Safari, you could select the
Windows

Microsoft Explorer user agent, which basically tells the website which
browser you use. I just tried it and had no problem getting in.
Initially,
before I changed the user agent, I got the same message but now it
appears

to be fine.

It's really a pity that developers are so lazy that they code for
only a
specific platform. The Internet was supposed to be platform and OS
agnostic
but the dominance of Windows and the constant push from Microsoft
with their
specific extensions to the HTML language has skewed the direction
of the
Internet and many websites only assume that you're running Windows
and using

Internet Exploiter...

You could email or contact them to let them know

Well put, but somehow, I don't think it's going to happen.

Exterminate all rational thought.

If this is a one-time project, Amber, why not take the files to a video
operation that does this sort of thing for a living? Might be cheaper
than forking over for programs you might not use again.

I used one to transfer a PAL taketo NTSC for a friend--the charge

Thanks again !!!

This is the text I left on their website, as a complaint:

My complaint doesn't have anything to do with your products, I love them! I
want to complain because of the way your web site is locking out all
non-Windows, non-Internet Exploiter users by designing a web site that
relies on non-standard extensions to Internet standards, namely ActiveX.
Frankly, with all the problems that we have heard over the last few years
about how unsecure Exploiter and Windows for that matter are, I can't
understand why you keep encouraging this platform and can't demonstrate more
imagination to be able to deliver your web content without relying on
extensions that were lame attempts by Microsoft to try dominating the web.
Haven't you read many publications, even ones dedicated to Windows,
recommending their readers to stop using Explorer?

I'm really disappointed by this situation and until it is resolved, I will
unfortunately stop buying any of your products.

Thank you for reading this.

-Laurent.

code monkey n.: 1. A person only capable of grinding out code, but unable to
perform the higher-primate tasks of software architecture, analysis, and
design. Mildly insulting. Often applied to the most junior people on a
programming team. 2. Anyone who writes code for a living; a programmer. 3. A
self-deprecating way of denying responsibility for a management decision, or
of complaining about having to live with such decisions. As in Don't ask me
why we need to write a compiler in COBOL, I'm just a code monkey.

Laurent,

I work with an otherwise excellent company that uses ActiveX for
training web conferences. So far, I've had to use VPC in order to
participate. Even with VPC 7.x on a 15 AlBook 1.25GHz with 1 GB RAM
and OS 10.4.5, doing anything in Windows is painfully slow.

Are there options that could be suggested to these programmers to
make this process platform-independent? I'm thinking that there must
be ways to do web conferences (where participants can see what the
presenter is doing on her/his computer in real time) that don't
depend on MS-only software...

Thanks,

Harry Corsover

iCab supports whatever email client you set as the default for
handling mailto urls.

Personally, I like to use Eudora.

I use Eudora Lite 6.1 on my Lombard, and it's great, IMHO. The only
problem is that it can only handle one email account, but it's all I
need, as I only use my primary email with it, and route the other
stuff to the PeeCee, for when I feel like torturing myself.

Glad it worked! Thanks for the update. So many things like this
just vanish, I always wonder if they got resolved or not.
