Yes to all.

I used a 15-inch Al PB as a desktop machine and was happy with the
result. I put the book on the far side of the desk on a stand higher
than the desktop so that it was at eye level. I used Bluetooth mouse
and keyboard. It worked very well.

Sometimes the small screen would create limitations, especially when
trying to use more than one program at a time. Otherwise it worked
great.

That's my only problem that I've run into when using my Lombard as a
desktop, as well. Of course, I've got a 17 LCD monitor that I can
pull from my PC desktop for those times.

I gave up on my little old i-Mac and am now using my Powerbook (15

better. Of course I'd love to have a brand new fancy desktop I-mac,

invest in it when I've got a laptop.

Concetta

I've upgraded my BW (G4/450) and iBook (G3/500) from 4.3 to 4.4 to
4.5 and have had no problems at all.

Hey, all, thanks
I received a couple of posts encouraging me to go ahead and upgrade
from 10.4.2 to 10.4.5.

So I'm going to take the plunge... Thanks for giving me courage...
Concetta

I have only gotten into trouble *once* updating one of the Macs at
the school (of about 35-40), and that once was easily fixed (an AR
of 10.2 followed by re-applying the update, whole process took about
35 minutes). I could have fixed even quicker had there been another
account to log onto on the machine.

The only upgrade that has ever been a serious problem was 10.3 and
the Great Firewire Drive Massacre. Now, if you go to Macintouch or
Macfixit along about update time, you would believe that every
software update Apple has ever issued has been fraught with horrible,
data-eating, computer-killing monster bugs.

Some people have their ritual Boot from the CD, run Disk Repair,
reboot, run Permissions repair, reboot in Safe mode, run the update
whilst shaking a rattle and chicken feathers over the keyboard to
ensure a successful update.

Me, I fire up Software Update, then put it in the back and keep on
working usually on fifteen things at once. I have, to my knowledge,
never run Permissions Repair on my systems, Disk Repair (on my boot
drive) only once (and the problem was something else entirely) and
the only time I've ever had a problem was when I tried to install
Tiger via a DVD drive in what turned out to be a flaky external
firewire enclosure.

Took me a day to recover from that one, because I ended up manually
restoring my home folder, amid a number of permissions issues.

However, I ALWAYS do an upgrade (10.3.x to 10.4.x) via Archive and Re-
install, most people I've ever seen who had problems have gone the
Upgrade route.

As I said, updates (10.4.4 to 10.4.5) I usually run while I'm doing
other things. Of all my systems only one isn't a complete frankenmac:
my Pismo laptop, and IT has a slot loading DVD/CDRW transplanted from
a defunct TiBook.

I attribute my good luck to three things:

1) Clean Living...I rarely put tequila on my Cheerios anymore.

2) Plenty of Exercise...they won't let me put the coffeepot in the
office, so I have to walk ALL the way down the hall.

3) I have Backups of my Stuff. Irreplaceable files, such as iPhoto
Libraries, and iTunes purchases are backed up on multiple CD or DVD
disks, stored in different locations, and I have an external FW drive
that I back up my home directories to on a regular basis. There's
also a bootable system installed on that drive, so in an emergency I
can start up my systems from it as well.

4) All my Desktop systems are on uninterruptible power supplies, all
from APC http://www.apc.com/. They deliver clean, regulated power
to the computer, which helps ensure the best performance and longest
life for the electronic components. I don't get the oddball component
failures and suchlike that are common on these lists.

Since laptops are powered through adapters, and have batteries, this
is less important for them, because much of the regulating is done
automatically.

There are other brands than APC, but we use them exclusively at work
(counting the systems under people's desks we've probably got a
couple of hundred of 'em) and are very pleased.

Of my rules, I suspect #3 is the most important, followed by #4.

2006-02-17 Thread TjL

I use a 15 Powerbook with iCurve and an external Dell LCD.

There is a hack out there which will allow some iBooks to use monitor
spanning (2 separate screens) as opposed to mirroring (2 identical screens).

You will love the extra workspace when you are home.

I use a 21 at home which lets me watch TV using picture in picture.

At work I have a 17... No TV though :-/

I also have an external keyboard for both (Apple Wired at work and Wireless
at home) and mouse.

Ive been using a cheap ($12) but good synchronization tool to do that for

I have a gigE dual 450 G4 that used to be my main machine, but now
this iBook is it. The G4 is still in the same place on my desk but is

Re: iBook as Desktop

2006-02-15 Thread Concetta Z

Is anybody here happy with using their iBooks or small screen
PowerBooks as desktop machines? Do you hook up an extra keyboard
and mouse? Happy with the small screen? Or do you hook up a
larger monitor? Elevate the laptop on a stand?

I used to use an eMac and an iBook and keep them synchronized.

Hey, that's my setup.
I'm having a little problem synching the two. How did you do it?
I would like a fast, easy, cheap way to sync my iBook to my eMac.
Just update the files that have been added or changed
(documents, iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, bookmarks spring to mind).
I don't want to do a complete backup (I have that on an external HD).
Also, does it matter that my iBook is 10.4.2, and eMac is 10.3.9?
(I'm waiting to hear more about 10.4.3/10.4.4/10.4.5 for my iBook, and
when I have an extra $100 I'll upgrade the eMac to Tiger)

Thanks for any input.
Concetta

iBook as Desktop

2006-02-14 Thread Al Poulin
I have the neat little 12 iBook G4/1.33 GHz, with Combo drive, which I
use for occasional genealogy research trips outside the house. Our
main Mac, which I share with my wife, is a G4 QuickSilver 733 with
Apple's 17 LCD. I particularly love that monitor.

In setting up another work desk in another room of the house, I could
try using the iBook, or I could buy a new iMac. I will be working (or
playing) hours at a time, sometimes all day with meal breaks.
Principal uses are e-mail, web browsing, word processing, researching
CD-ROMs for .pdf pages, and running the genealogy Reunion software.

Is anybody here happy with using their iBooks or small screen
PowerBooks as desktop machines? Do you hook up an extra keyboard and
mouse? Happy with the small screen? Or do you hook up a larger
monitor? Elevate the laptop on a stand?

Any helpful hints welcome! Oh, has anyone tried using a laptop like
this and found it best to move on to a conventional desktop or
tower/monitor setup?

Thank you,

Al Poulin

Re: iBook as Desktop

2006-02-14 Thread William Wiseman
Tried it, didn't like it. I found the 12 screen I love in a portable
was too small for using as a full-time desktop. You can use an
external monitor, but the iBook will not work closed as the
powerbooks will.

I use my PowerBook 17 as my main Mac. At home, I often plug a Diamondback
Razer mouse so if I am in the need of playing, it's ready. At the office,
where I bring my PowerBook, I will some times use a Logitech Bluetooth
keyboard and mouse, but very rarely. Otherwise, I mostly use the built-in
keyboard and the trackpad for everything.

Also, at both home and office, I use a PodiumPad (AKA CoolPad) to slightly
elevate the PowerBook and help with dissipating heat.

Hmmm, in reading my reply, I realize that you are mentioning iBooks or
small screen PowerBooks, not exactly what a 17 is. To tell you the truth,
if I had to use an iBook or any PowerBook that is not a 17, I think I would
get an external screen as I would never settle for less than a 17 after
using it for over a year. I used a Pismo before and was extremly happy (I
still have it on a shelf here), but after the 17, I guess I was spoiled by
the additional screen estate...

memory leak: n. An error in a program's dynamic-store allocation logic that
causes it to fail to reclaim discarded memory, leading to eventual collapse
due to memory exhaustion. Also (esp. at CMU) called core leak. These
problems were severe on older machines with small, fixed-size address
spaces, and special leak detection tools were commonly written to root
them out. With the advent of virtual memory, it is unfortunately easier to
be sloppy about wasting a bit of memory (although when you run out of memory
on a VM machine, it means you've got a _real_ leak!). See aliasing bug,
fandango on core, smash the stack, precedence lossage, overrun screw, leaky

I used to use an eMac and an iBook and keep them synchronized. Now I
use only a 15 AlBook 1.25GHz, 1GB RAM, OS 10.4.4. At my main desk, I
have a computer hutch with a shelf raised a few inches off the
table top, and on top of that I have a Road Tools Podium CoolPad
that raises the screen to a perfect height for me.

I use an Apple Bluetooth kepboard, and a Microsoft Intellimouse
Optical at my desk. When I'm upstairs, I have the smaller CoolPad
that I use either on a table or on my lap, and find the trackpad
(with the addition of iScroll2 for two-finger scrolling) comfortable
most of the time.

I'd probably do the same with a 12 screen, but I'm glad to have the
extra screen real estate with the 15.

Al,

I saved up my pennies and bought the same iBook you have last
October. I have a gigE dual 450 G4 that used to be my main machine,
but now this iBook is it. The G4 is still in the same place on my
desk but is now acting as a server for the most part. I love the
portability of this iBook, I use it everywhere in the house, I even
put it on the book holder of my exercise bike and do a little web
surfing while riding the bike. I also find it nice to have while
waiting for my kids at the different lessons I take them to all week.
I love this iBook, it has replaced my desktop 100%. I do like having
everything I do on this iBook, I think that is part of the draw, it
would be hard to have some things on this and some things on a
desktop. I guess it all comes down to personal preference and how you
work.

Now, you did say you could buy a new iMac and set it up, I have to
admit, if I had the cash on hand I might buy a new iMac and replace
the old beige G3 we have in our kitchen. :)

take care,
Kevin Avery

Candlelit iBook Screen

the screen's dying...

Either the EL element itself is dying, or the board that generates

Hi Yes it will it is just a straight drop into the pismo caddy but
the face plate will not fit as it is slot loading. You can make one
easy enough from an old vst zip drive caddy for the pismo.

It should, I've got one from a TiBook in mine. Just unbolted the

The bezel doesn't fit, but it's a slot loader, so it's less

The bezel doesn't fit, but it's a slot loader, so it's less

old drive to attach it to the new one so it's prettier.

Bruce, about how expensive are TiBook superdrives, as I'd like to put
one in my Lombard eventually.

No clue, since I was given the expired TiBook for spare parts.
(College only, unfortunately, since it's a UA-owned system)

I'd scour e-bay for TiBook parts. Powerbookguy
http://www.powerbookguy.com sells one for $129.

Thanks. If anything, Powerbookguy definitely beats OWC's prices for
superdrives. Does it work with the native drivers in Jaguar, or will I
have to hack some drivers and/or install PatchBurn?

The one from the Tibook worked just fine right off the bat, but that
was in 10.3. You might have to run Patchburn if the drive post-dates
Jaguar.

Dead 14 iBook? Any ideas?

2006-01-24 Thread Jamie Pruden

Hi all,

I've been presented with a challenge that I can't do a thing with...

One of my colleagues has presented me with his 14 iBook (700 MHz G3).

There's just no power. I've tried taking the battery out for a few
days to reset the power manager, but I don't know what else to do...

Any ideas?

thanks,
Jamie

Is this the Dual USB model? It has a problem interfacing with the
power adapter... it was an Apple recall issue motherboard/connector
issue.

Interchanging iBook G3 G4 keyboards

2006-01-15 Thread Ruffin Bailey
I'm afraid I've mostly lurked on this list for a while and I
apologize if the subject has been covered before, but just in case
it's helpful... I certainly didn't find anyone who seemed to have
done the deed when I Googled this up a few times over the last year.

Short answers:

* You *cannot* use iBook G4 keyboards on iBook G3s without putting an
extension on the ribbon, which, if you don't mind, we'll say is a
nontrivial exercise, to put it mildly.

* You *can* use G3 keyboards on G4 with a few caveats. One, you'll
have to fold the ribbon like a Z over on itself, which is not the
recommended way of using a ribbon cable. Two, you'll have a slight
bow in the keyboard that'll make it poke up just enough you'll likely
scrape the screen with your keyboard's keys.

I had a G4 keyboard go flakey on me (never liked it as much as the
iBook G3 keyboard, and it finally acted so wacky I either had to
clean it #shudder!# or use it as an excuse for this experiment) and,
after pulling another keyboard from a limping iBook G3, the things
looked similar enough I thought it was worth a shot. So far, so
good. The bent-over ribbon does concern me a bit, however.

The iBook G4 keyboard doesn't have a particularly nice feel, imo,
though the metal keyholders do seem a bit more robust. I've had
issues on my G4 kybd with the space bar not being so responsive and
with random keys repeating at the slightest pressure (particularly
h, fwiw). Taking a little out of a G3 keyboard's ribbon would seem
a nice way to get a good typing-feel into this very nice laptop. I'd
considered downgrading to an iBook G3 900 to get as much perf as I
could with the nicer keyboard, esp since Small Dog had told me that I
couldn't swap in a G3 kybd for the G4. Glad I found out differently,
so far. I'm not so sure they were wrong -- the keyboards *aren't*
interchangeable. But, again, you can take the G3's to the G4.

Anyhow, there you go. Hope that helps someone at some point.

Ruffin Bailey

Ibook G4 1GHz malfunctioning motherboard any value?

2006-01-15 Thread Laurent Daudelin
A few months ago, I did replace the motherboard in my daughter's iBook G4 at
1GHz. She had spilled water on the keyboard and it found its way to damage
the motherboard. Only the video was affected, though, the computer seemed to
be working fine except for the video.

So, that motherboard has been sitting on a shelf for a few months now,
collecting dust.

Anybody knows if this has any value that would justify putting it on eBay?

Thanks!

Do an Archive and Re-install. (select options when you pick which
drive to install it in during the installation process; the default
will be to Upgrade, you don't want that, but Archive and Re-install)

This keeps all of your user data intact, but gives you a whole new

In part, that's Jaguar. In part, your data is probably very fragmented by now.

Somewhere in the long ago, I recall some expert stating that every
2 or 3 years, one should backup the hard drive and then reformat it.

Well...

Formatting ain't gonna happen on an IDE drive. Apple doesn't support
that (and they're right - it's not necessary).

But you can zero it ... which writes and reads every block on the
drive. This forces remaps if a sector has gone bad. Better to remap
a zeroed sector than one with your good data on it.

And, of course, the reload after a fresh initialization insures your
data is unfragmented.

I am going to install panther on the iBook and am wondering if I
should reformat the drive before I do this.

+/- the above, I would.

Also, will I be able to use the same administrator's password, etc?
In short, is it more trouble than it is worth to reformat the drive?

After three years, I think zero'ing is worth the effort. And the
defragmented data will fly faster.

Make Good Backups.

G4-iBook w/o OS - Question

2005-12-09 Thread BGbank
Greetings folks, This may be a no-brainer Q... but I don't know...

I'm thinking of buying from a certain vendor a G4 ibook that comes without
an OS. My Q is, How can you install an OS if it doesn't already have one?

I have OS 9.1 CDs which came with this current G3 ibook (300mhz, 6gig, 128
ram). Will a G4 ibook (800mhz, 30gig, 640 ram) without any OS on it, let me
boot from and/or install this OS 9.1-CD, for starters? (Eventually I
would look to buy OSX CDs, etc.)

In other words, I'm sure the machine will turn on, but then what? Will a
G4 ibook w/o any OS on it even let you get to the Start Up Disk in the
Apple Menu/Control Panels so you can set it to start up on the OS 9.1 CD?

And then would it let me merely copy to HD the entire OS 9.1 from the CD?
If so, that'd be great. But if not, I wouldn't want to buy this G4 ibook if
I can't even make it work.

If it's more complicated than what I described above, does anyone know of a
webpage or URL that would list How To do such a thing, step-by-step?

Thanks for any tips!
Best regards,
Gail

Depending on the model of iBook, it may or may not boot from that OS 9.1 CD.
Any Macintosh will be able to boot from an appropriate system install CD.
The CD has a version of the OS so that the Mac can boot from it. The only
gotcha is to make sure that the system install CD you have is appropriate
for the specific model of Mac you're planning to use it with.

metasyntactic variable: n. A name used in examples and understood to stand

confusion, hackers never (well, hardly ever) use `foo' or other words like

that any filename beginning with a metasyntactic-variable name is a scratch
file that may be deleted at any time.

G4 iBooks will require Panther or better. It will not boot into any
version of 9. Just buy the retail CD's for Panther or DVD for Tiger,
boot with the C key held down. Nothing more to it than that.

First, the price of the iBook should be discounted because there is no
original CD or OS loaded on the iBook. It should be sold with the
original OS and include the CD's but that does not happen all the time
so you will be responsible to get a licensed OS for it.

I would not buy one that way personally because there could be
problems you will not know about until it's got an OS on it. Unless
you know the seller personally of course, or can return it if there is
a problem.

Many of the Mac specific install CD's like the one you have may not
boot and install on any other specific Mac. So your OS 9 CD from your
iBook may or may not work. Since it is an iBook CD your chances are
better that it will work. You will find out when you boot from the CD
and do the install process whether or not it will work for that
particular iBook. If you have access to the iBook try booting from
your CD by starting it or restarting it with the CD in the iBook while
holding down the C key.

Installing an OS is as simple as booting from the CD with the C key
and following the installer instructions. It's easy to do. I would
suggest buying a retail version of OS 10.3 from the swaplist or eBay
as soon as possible. Your G3 iBook can also run OS 10.3 with enough
RAM and it would be a much better Mac'n experience than OS 9.1 ever
was. If you are going to buy a G4 iBook you should put a decent OS on
it.

OS 9 on a G4 is like driving a Cadillac with a Chevette motor in it.

iBook Logic Board extended repair program x2?

2005-12-09 Thread Jean Sinervo
Greetings ...
Just curious if any of you have had to send an iBook G3 in more than
once for video issues covered by the Logic Board Extended Repair Program.

We sent one in several months ago and it worked well until recently, but
now it's exhibiting the same garbled video and blank screen on startup
issues as before the repair.

Apple's been very cooperative and will be picking it up for diagnosis.
Have any of you had the good fortune of having your iBook repaired
more than once for this issue? Do you know exactly what it is they
diagnose/repair with this?

Like I said, just curious ...

Jean

THANK YOU Dylan. I didn't know about the C key. That sounds simple enough!

That sounds easy enough to figure out by checking some specs at everymac or
apple, which I did, and so I'm thinking OS9 would NOT work on the G4/800mhz,
first edition. I never had a mac w/No OS, so wasn't sure. Thanks again.

Yes, thanks. It is discounted, or was, I should say, because I just got
email to my query and in their ad/mac description it had said at the bottom
of the page Buy Now for $400 but he just wrote me to say that was a
mistake, as it was supposed to say that bidding STARTS at $400. I thought
it was too good to be true, lol. Of course he said if no one bids on it he
would gladly sell it for the $400.

I would not buy one that way personally because there could be
problems you will not know about until it's got an OS on it. Unless
you know the seller personally of course, or can return it if there is
 a problem.

Thanks for that advice. I didn't think about the fact there COULD be
problems unknown UNTIL an OS was put on it. And no, I don't know the people
but they are a power seller at ebay with refurbs and 30-day warranty only.

Many of the Mac specific install CD's like the one you have may not

I love that C key tip, thanks! I wish I had access to it to try it out in
advance but not yet and may not even end up with it if the bidding doesn't
work out.

Installing an OS is as simple as booting from the CD with the C key
and following the installer instructions. It's easy to do. I would
suggest buying a retail version of OS 10.3 from the swaplist or eBay
 as soon as possible.

Yes, thanks, I already zeroed in on two good deals at ebay for the
10.4/Tiger but I won't need them if I don't get the G4-without-OS.

Your G3 iBook can also run OS 10.3 with enough RAM and it would be a much
better Mac'n experience than OS 9.1 ever was.

I just don't think these 6gig'er clamshells are enough HD memory. I have
hardly anything on this current G3 clamshell (IE-OE-MS Office 98, etc.) and
it's slow as molasses and bogs down, etc. which is why I was looking for a
newer model with more mhz and more ram and mucho bigger HD. Also it's awful
heavy on the lap! ;-)

If you are going to buy a G4 iBook you should put a decent OS on it.

Definitely, I agree, thanks! Some good deals on OSX's at ebay, haven't seen
too many through the swap list yet. And since most newer macs COME WITH an
OSX, the only reason I was needing one was due to this possible G4-deal w/o
the OS, but thought if I could get it revved up first w/the OS9 which I
already have... but that's history now, I'm thinking it wouldn't work and if
I get the G4 I would just go ahead and get a separate OSX for it at the same
time since the prices don't look as bad as I expected (for full install
versions).

OS 9 on a G4 is like driving a Cadillac with a Chevette motor in it.
 Ron

heehee, good one! ;-)
What's the most important factor on an ibook for it to work the best/faster?
Ram size, or HD size, or mhz/ghz size?
Will Tiger function okay on a G3/500mhz ibook?
The Tiger page at apple.com says Tiger will work on any PowerPC G3-G4-G5 but
one seller had said 800mhz would be better and another comment at amazon
someone said 800mhz was even too slow for Tiger.

THANKS Ron, Dylan, and Laurent! With all that advice I now have a much
clearer idea of what I'm doing!
Best regards,
Gail

Not that it would help Gail's situation, but I'm curious: Could a mac

It should as the target disk mode is implemented in the firmware, even

replacement. Both times were no hassle. First time shipped from
workplace to repair center. Second (just last month) was from AASC.
First time it was diagnosed over the phone, second time by service tech
at AASC. Hope this helps.

Good luck,
Henry

Greetings ...
Just curious if any of you have had to send an iBook G3 in more than
once for video issues covered by the Logic Board Extended Repair
Program.

We sent one in several months ago and it worked well until recently,
but

now it's exhibiting the same garbled video and blank screen on startup
issues as before the repair.

Apple's been very cooperative and will be picking it up for
diagnosis.

Have any of you had the good fortune of having your iBook repaired
more than once for this issue? Do you know exactly what it is they
diagnose/repair with this?

Like I said, just curious ...

Everything like MHz, RAM and even HD speed makes a difference in how
the OS will run. For the average user hard drive size only makes a
difference if it gets loaded too full, but mostly it just limits you
to how many apps you can have installed. Adding RAM will improve any

thing I do with a new Mac and I try to add as much as I can afford. In
my opinion RAM gives the best return on your money of all the things

I have a Clamshell 466MHz G3 with a 10GB drive that I have Tiger
running on with 320MB of RAM and it does ok on surfing and light duty.
I may end up putting Panther back on it because it was snappier than
Tiger is and for what I use the Clamshell for I don't need the added
perks of Tiger.

I also had a 300MHz Clamshell with 320MB of RAM and a 6GB hard drive
running Panther but the hard drive size was too small for what I want
loaded on it. Panther ran fine on it though and with thorough cleaning
and burning files to CD's it is easy to keep the junk from overloading
the Mac.

One thing about the seller who has the iBook is that he is probably
reputable but just does not have the OS CD's to sell with it. Too many
eBay sellers sell computers with a newer OS but no CD's which is
software pirating and generally is a sign of their honesty. Without
the CD's the hard drive should be wiped clean. So at least he didn't
add Panther or Tiger to the iBook to sell it for more money and that's
a good sign.

Even the Swaplist has far too many Macs for sale that have newer OS's
installed without CD's included in the sale, which is pirated software
and also a violation of the LEM rules but apparently the nanny never
reads the posts.

Max RAM will have the most salutory effect - I'd say *AT LEAST* 512 MB
is needed, 1 GB or more is even better.

It'll function okay but whether it's fast enough is a subjective
opinion. I'd say that with max RAM a G3/500 iBook would be more than
adequate for light duty use, but if you do more than basic stuff you'll
be much happier with at least a G4/800 iBook.

boot with the C key held down. Nothing more to it than that.

THANK YOU Dylan. I didn't know about the C key. That sounds
simple enough!

Depending on the model of iBook, it may or may not boot from that
OS 9.1 CD.
Any Macintosh will be able to boot from an appropriate system
install CD.
The CD has a version of the OS so that the Mac can boot from it.
The only
gotcha is to make sure that the system install CD you have is
appropriate

for the specific model of Mac you're planning to use it with.
-Laurent.

That sounds easy enough to figure out by checking some specs at
everymac or
apple, which I did, and so I'm thinking OS9 would NOT work on the
G4/800mhz,
first edition. I never had a mac w/No OS, so wasn't sure. Thanks
again.

Krow Magnum at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 12/9/05 10:47 AM
First, the price of the iBook should be discounted because there
is no

original CD or OS loaded on the iBook. It should be sold with the
original OS and include the CD's but that does not happen all the
time

so you will be responsible to get a licensed OS for it.

Yes, thanks. It is discounted, or was, I should say, because I
just got
email to my query and in their ad/mac description it had said at
the bottom

of the page Buy Now for $400 but he just wrote me to say that was a
mistake, as it was supposed to say that bidding STARTS at $400. I
thought
it was too good to be true, lol. Of course he said if no one bids
on it he

would gladly sell it for the $400.

I would not buy one that way personally because there could be
problems you will not know about until it's got an OS on it. Unless
you know the seller personally of course, or can return it if
there is

a problem.

Thanks for that advice. I didn't think about the fact there COULD be
problems unknown UNTIL an OS was put on it. And no, I don't know
the people
but they are a power seller at ebay with refurbs and 30-day
warranty only.

Many of the Mac specific install CD's like the one you have may not
boot and install on any other specific Mac. So your OS 9 CD from
your

iBook may or may not work. Since it is an iBook CD your chances are
better that it will work. You will find out when you boot from
the CD

and do the install process whether or not it will work for that
particular iBook. If you have access to the iBook try booting from
your CD by starting it or restarting it with the CD in the iBook
while

holding down the C key.

I love that C key tip, thanks! I wish I had access to it to try it
out in
advance but not yet and may not even end up with it if the bidding
doesn't

work out.

Installing an OS is as simple as booting from the CD with the C
key

and following the installer instructions.

Your G3 iBook can also run OS 10.3 with enough RAM and it would
be a much

better Mac'n experience than OS 9.1 ever was.

I just don't think these 6gig'er clamshells are enough HD memory. I
have
hardly anything on this current G3 clamshell (IE-OE-MS Office 98,
etc.) and
it's slow as molasses and bogs down, etc. which is why I was
looking for a
newer model with more mhz and more ram and mucho bigger HD. Also
it's awful

heavy on the lap! ;-)

If you are going to buy a G4 iBook you should put a decent OS

A quick look at G4 800MHz sales on ebay shows the iBooks sell for
about $5-700.00 so keep that in mind. And watch what they charge for
shipping too. $20.00 is usually plenty $$ to ship a laptop with

The G3-500mhz w/Tiger is the second item I was looking at, at ebay (in

because have never had a machine big/fast enough to do much else, and only
recently got high-speed cable and before that, a total bear to even visit
ebay at all.

The G3-500mhz has 384mb ram and a whopping 55gig HD. Which is all good if
the 500mhz would work OK w/Tiger but since that's what he has on it, maybe
it works fine.

Thanks Gene!

Thanks for the advice. I should've put more RAM on this clamshell a long

so was never anxious to mess with it. Would rather put any $ toward
something a little bigger/faster.

 I have a Clamshell 466MHz G3 with a 10GB drive that I have Tiger

I can't imagine fitting another OS of any kind of this 6gig, and I really
don't have that many apps for the same reason. So I keep it for internet
and email and some word-processing, but want to add a newer faster laptop.

And I definitely wanted Tiger on whatever newer machine because I heard that
spotlight is awesome for finding emails (I heard Walt Mossberg, WSJ techie,
on Charlie Rose one night rave about spotlight and how easy it is to find
emails, and that's exactly why I want Tiger. I've got a yahoo email list

Well, that's yet another reason I wanted a newer ibook, so it would have

all this stuff hanging off the ibook, like the zip and USB-hub, etc.

Thank you for explaining that! I just replied to the guy and asked why he

BTW, it appears they sell more pc's than mac's so I was thinking maybe they
didn't know too much about macs.

Thanks, John, for the helpful tips. I've only been looking at machines with

And, yeah, I did notice one seller saying they would NOT include the coupon
for getting the DVD in CD from apple. Prior to that I didn't realize there
was such a thing.

eBay-ers will probably bid the price of that G4 way over $400.

I'm sure you're right. I'm not an ebay fan, really, I have never bought one
single thing there before -- never could access the site with dial-up, it
was monstrously slow and I couldn't stand it. But just got high speed and
went to check it out. I was mainly checking out the Buy it Now items
because I'm not into all that frenzied bidding at the last second.

I've also run into sneaky stuff like little extra charges because the
sellers complain that they are just paying too much for PayPal.

Yeah, that's baloney, I see that in a lot of places besides ebay, people
adding $10 or $15 to the price because they have to pay PayPal and they try
to bum it off on the buyer. Even non-profits are doing that, I ran across
two recently who did that, and I say, If you want my $, don't be such a
cheapskate, I'm not going to pay your fees, too! :-/

I find eBay completely odious. But you may find really good deals via
DealMac, where you can sign up for alerts on low prices for G4 iBooks.

;-) I guess we agree ebay isn't the greatest all around. It is a little
scary, especially the unknown people, though there are some regular mac
shops that list items there, too, like powerbookguy and brentsales are two I
noticed and have been mulling over some of their items. I'll have to
revisit DealMac... I haven't checked all places yet.

Also remember that a new iBook comes not only with an OS, but with
other bundled applications that aren't part of the OS installation.
So when comparing you may find that the loss of things like
Appleworks or Quicken may factor into your cost analysis.

Thank you, I did notice the difference in the descriptions of Full-Install
CDs/DVDs and other upgrade versions. Some people are good at writing
detailed descriptions of their items and what is included, even all the
items on the CDs/DVDs, and then others you have to email them 3 times to get
the simple specifics of what you'd like to know!

 Caveat emptor.
 John

The G3/500mhz/55gig/384ram/Tiger guy actually sent me an ebay message asking
if I wanted to look at his ebay item, and he listed the item #. When I
asked how he knew I was even looking, he never gave an answer (I assumed he
saw my name in another bid) but I wondered how cool was it for him to
contact people like that who have bid on other items? I dunno, since I'm
not an experienced ebay'er, maybe that's the norm and is no big deal. Then
it turns out he's French but the item is in TX, and since his English (or
maybe just his typing) is choppy, he doesn't write complete answers. So

Depending on the model of iBook, it may or may not boot from that OS 9.1

That sounds easy enough to figure out by checking some specs at everymac or

I concur. I used my iBook G4 for the first week with just the stock

Will Tiger function okay on a G3/500mhz ibook?
The Tiger page at apple.com says Tiger will work on any PowerPC
G3-G4-G5 but one seller had said 800mhz would be better and
another comment at amazon someone said 800mhz was even too slow
 for Tiger.

It'll function okay but whether it's fast enough is a subjective
opinion. I'd say that with max RAM a G3/500 iBook would be more
than adequate for light duty use, but if you do more than basic
stuff you'll be much happier with at least a G4/800 iBook.

Thanks, Ron. This particular one up for grabs is a refurb from a guy or a
company who sells quite a few pcs (and apples?) and it is a
G4/800mhz/30gig/640mb/ComboDrive and No OS, supposedly checked out by their
techs and in good working condition, so if an OS costs about $100, then
using your figures, it should be $400-$600 max. And they are saying $30 for
FEDEX, which is all they use. I did think $30 was a bit much for SH.

A few weeks ago I did start out by looking at the brand new ibooks but
thought if I could cut the price in half with a refurb or used, I'd rather
go that route than jack up the credit card. ;-)

G3 iBook LCD question

2005-12-09 Thread GalBros
Hi, what is the exchange matrix for LCDs for iBooks, starting with the 500mhz
dual USB on up?

I recently obtained an iBook 500mhz with a busted screen. I was told all of
the non-clamshell G3 iBook LCDs could be used with it, but the 800mhz and
900mhz LCDs would be a slightly different color.

Thank you for the help!

  Common sense...isn't

The G3-500mhz w/Tiger is the second item I was looking at, at ebay (in
addition to looking at the G4-800mhz w/o OS). I guess I do basic stuff
because have never had a machine big/fast enough to do much else, and only
recently got high-speed cable and before that, a total bear to even visit
 ebay at all.

The G3-500mhz has 384mb ram and a whopping 55gig HD. Which is all good if
the 500mhz would work OK w/Tiger but since that's what he has on it, maybe
 it works fine.

 Thanks Gene!
 Gail

The advise I always give is spend as much as you can afford. I can't
imagine 800MHz as only being adequate for Tiger. My 466 Clam does
just fine with surfing, email and ebaying. My 1.5GHz G4 Powerbook
doesn't do those things that much faster. A 300MHz G3 iBook would be
pushing it but an 800MHz G4 iBook will handle Tiger with no problems.

iBooks are made for Light duty use and he's comparing it to
something you would need a G4 Powerbook or G4/G5 Powermac for. Anyone
using high-end graphics apps or video apps should not be using an
iBook anyway. iBooks are for the home computer user and an 800MHz G4
has plenty of oomph for that. As mentioned 512MB or better RAM helps
too.

Now that you have fast internet you can get on the wifi wagon too !
The main reason I have a Powerbook and iBook is because I can use wifi
and lounge on the couch, in bed or out enjoying the weather. (I live
in FL so it's nice enough to go outside in my shorts and iBook here)

Caution though. it can make one turn into a couch potato ;-)

Thank you for confirming my suspicions! And funny, while looking around the

how I found it, probably google. I'll steer clear of that one.

The G3-French guy, when I first replied to his first message (both of us

I would file a complaint with eBay, but don't expect much to come from it.

I had a seller repeatedly threaten me through eBay's messaging system
and I filed a complaint but kept getting a form response from eBay
asking for copies of the offending email including the header. Duh
I responded 3 times that it was not email, but their own messaging
system. I finally gave up after a while when I realized eBay does not
care.

This was all over the fact he was selling a G4 with Tiger and all the
Adobe apps loaded so I asked him if the CD's were included because I
wanted to bid on it since he was local. He responded that he would
make copies of the OS and Adobe CD's for me. That's all I needed to
let him know what I thought and he got a little po'd.

Since he was a local seller and I had hoped he would find my address
through eBay and show up at my house but he never did.. I'd have a
shiney new dual-core G5 right now if he did.

Try Wacom Mozilla, it works fine with OS 9 and gmail:

And you can get rid of Internet Exploiter hopefully ! Wamcom Mozilla

Another alternative is iCab:

A few days ago I saw two authors on TV who had written books about google...
The Search and I think the other was Google Company. Maybe it's the
same for all search engine companies, but the one man said google stores
every single search done by every single person on the planet which, google
says, is so they can come up with better services, etc., but this author
said it could also be used, for instance, in divorce cases where a spouse
could get all the search info on their partner, etc., so he didn't think it
 was a good thing.

Wow, big switch. I've never used any yahoo accounts I ever made either.
They almost make you have one just to use their other services, but it's a
 waste of space.

LOL, that's the only reason I have one too.

So what if they are saving all my searches, lol, I'm
probably already considered a domestic terrorist (=by having politically
 incorrect opinions).

I'm sure you'll be in good company on those lists !

His G3 auction just ended and don't worry, I wasn't going for it... too many

2005-12-09 Thread BGbank
Krow Magnum at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 12/9/05 4:33 PM

The advise I always give is spend as much as you can afford. I can't
imagine 800MHz as only being adequate for Tiger. My 466 Clam does
just fine with surfing, email and ebaying. My 1.5GHz G4 Powerbook
doesn't do those things that much faster. A 300MHz G3 iBook would be
pushing it but an 800MHz G4 iBook will handle Tiger with no problems.

That's great to know. The G3-500mhz was just sold (Mr. Frenchy), but the
G4-800mhz with No-OS ends at 9pm and one person already did bid on it
finally. Don't think I can stay awake 'til 9pm...

iBooks are made for Light duty use and he's comparing it to
something you would need a G4 Powerbook or G4/G5 Powermac for. Anyone
using high-end graphics apps or video apps should not be using an
iBook anyway. iBooks are for the home computer user and an 800MHz G4
has plenty of oomph for that. As mentioned 512MB or better RAM helps
 too.

Awesome! Then that G4 is a good machine for Tiger. No video apps or
high-end graphics here, mostly Text Text and more Text, lol, and a few pics
now and then.

Now that you have fast internet you can get on the wifi wagon too !

heehee, would love to be completely wireless! Mr. French's G3-500mhz
actually had an airport card (if he is for real, that is), as most of them
do not include the airport card.

The main reason I have a Powerbook and iBook is because I can use wifi
and lounge on the couch, in bed or out enjoying the weather. (I live
in FL so it's nice enough to go outside in my shorts and iBook here)

That's the only place I ever do computing is legs stretched out on the bed.
Sat crouched over a desk for too many years on the job. So this is the only
way to compute! As for outside, enjoy while you can as this is THE ONLY
time of year that outside is even bearable. -- Also a native Floridian
-- but can't take the 7-months of humidity-h***. Ugh!

Caution though. it can make one turn into a couch potato ;-)

the max for that model. Of course the G3-300mhz clamshell I'm using now has
 the bare MINImum, 128.

Will Tiger function okay on a G3/500mhz ibook?
The Tiger page at apple.com says Tiger will work on any PowerPC
G3-G4-G5 but one seller had said 800mhz would be better and another
comment at amazon someone said 800mhz was even too slow for Tiger.

It'll function okay but whether it's fast enough is a subjective
opinion. I'd say that with max RAM a G3/500 iBook would be more than
adequate for light duty use, but if you do more than basic stuff you'll
be much happier with at least a G4/800 iBook.
 Gene Osburn

There are not many good deals on eBay. There is a reason auctions
end with a low price. For the same reason you didn't bid, there was
probably something fishy there.

You say 55GB will be enough ? LOL. wait till you have that much
storage. You'll find a way to fill it.

I used to think 4GB would be nirvana Now I'm thinking a couple of
new 250GB drives would be enough for me. I only have an internal 80GB
and a Firewire 120GB right now and that's not enough.

I was protecting my rights and voicing my opinion which is also my
right and I'm good at it ;-)

ebay has a policy about not allowing pirated software but they do not
police it because they are not liable because of the agreement when
you sign up. Not being liable does not make one completely innocent in
the matter it just keeps them out of civil court.

The Phone company analogy doesn't work because they have no control
over what you say or do until it is said or done. eBay has complete
control over what is posted for sale or auction but they don't care
enough to spend the time and money to make sure people are doing the
right thing. Until someone complains loud enough and it may make them
look bad..

I could honestly care less if Apple does anything to protect their own
rights. That's their problem to deal with and they should but they
don't want to spend the money on it. MS spends plenty on anti-piracy
issues and because of their business practices people have less
consideration for MS than Apple. Plus MS has much more licenses than
Apple so it costs them a lot more money.

And I would never expect anyone but myself to protect my rights,
especially not MS, Apple or the US govt. (I just made it on another
list with that one)

Re: iBook Logic Board extended repair program x2?

2005-12-09 Thread Sionnach Aisling

Hmmmph! How timely.

First off, let me say that I am having the same
problem with my G4 iBook, which, of course, Apple
refuses to admit there is a problem with so they won't
extend the warranty on those boards...

But more on to your subject; my neighbor has a 12 G3
iBook which had it's first logic board die about 6
months ago. It was replaced when she took it to an
Apple store and they shipped it out for repair. It
came back with a cracked case plastic just above the
trackpad and another cracked plastic around the LCD.
I told her to complain... she didn't. Two weeks ago,
it died again. She took it in and it just came back
tonight...

I took it apart to add a 512MB Ram module for her and
found a broken piece of case plastic floating around
under the keyboard... nice. Then I noticed that the
Num Lock LCD on the keyboard was mashed over under the
num lock key... also nice. I fixed the keyboard and
removed the case plastic piece. After firing the
machine up for about 30 seconds, it immediately began
exhibiting the symptoms of a bad logic board again...
the more we rebooted and the longer it ran, the worse
it got.

I think it's completely disgusting. There is no way
they could have tested that machine for any length of
time after they replaced the logic board. If this
problem is still persisting even after they've
admitted a problem, why have they not fixed the
problem on the boards that are out there so it doesn't
continue?

I could rant on and on about this. The past few
years, Apple hardware has gone right down the tubes.
I still have a COlor Classic, SE30, PB3400, PowerMac
7300, and Wallstreet which are all running flawlessly
with never any problems. I can't seem to keep new
iBooks running for longer than 6 months to a year
though... G3 or G4.

I like the machine, and I will keep using it, but I
back up VERY frequently and trust it about as far as I
can throw it.

Apple has left a very bad taste in my mouth.

G4 iBook HD Problem

2005-12-08 Thread Mike Vlasman

Hi Listers,

I have enjoyed lurking for the past few weeks and following the
informed discussion that goes on here.

I have a problem with my G4 iBook that I haven't seen discussed yet.

This October the hard-drive started to make a sound that makes me
think that the head has gone into an endless loop because it can't
find a sector. The drive just makes this non-ending swoop, swoop,
swoop sound and the machine freezes. The drive has always been loud,
and it makes this sound whenever it is active, but it usually only
persists for a few seconds. When the hard-drive makes this continuous
seek sound, all I can do is shut down the computer and wait for a
while before rebooting. This happens every time I use the computer
now. Sometimes it takes hours before this situation develops, other
times just minutes.

The drive is the original 30 GB (Apple's measurements, really 28 MB)
Toshiba. It is a SMART drive and does not report any problems. I
first suspected that the problem was overheating, but the temperature
monitor software (by Marcel Bresink) that I installed shows that the
hard-drive would stop responding at temperatures anywhere between 33
and 54 degrees Celsius, so I assume that it's not temperature related.

The only other thing that I can think of that might have something to
do with the problem is that in October I started using a Hawking USB
wireless dongle so I could surf the Internet from the couch. Until
then the computer had always been plugged into the wall (and ethernet
to the Internet) when being used.

My question: does anyone know what is going on? And, if the hard
drive needs replacing, is it difficult to open the machine to do the
replacement? (I have replaced drives in two previous G3 iBooks when
they died-much different deaths, just giving up the ghost in typical
hard-drive death scenarios.)

Specifications of the computer:

12 G4 iBook (from January 2004, I think)
OS: 10.3.9
CPU: 800 MHz
L2 Cache: 256 MB
Bus: 133 MHz
Boot ROM: 4.7.7f0
640 MB DDR SDRAM
Hard-drive: ATA Toshiba MK3021GAS
27.94 GB Journaled HFS+

Thank you very much for any help and comments.

Mike

Back up your data; what it sounds like is the drive is going into
thermal recalibration endlessly, meaning it's on the verge of
failing. Having to wait a couple hours for it to cool off to work is
the key symptom.

Since you've done this before, I'd say go ahead and replace the drive.

PB repairs I can honestly recommend to anyone with reasonable
physical dexterity and attention to detail; iBook repairs I'd only
recommend to people with *proven* physical dexterity, *excellent*
attention to detail, and a lot of confidence in your abilities.

Wow! I didn't know I had all those qualities! I did replace the hard drives
in my daughter and son's iBooks, plus replaced the motherboard in my
daughter's one too on a different occasion. No missing or left over screws,
everything works perfect.

Thanks for this, Bruce:

I have one new thought. Occassionally the Temperature Monitor
software reports that there's no hard-drive sensor. Since the HD
endless spin behaviour happens at various temperatures, could it be
just a loose connection?

Since you've done this before, I'd say go ahead and replace the drive.

I'd agree that the iBooks are a horror to work on, especially
compared to the simple and beautifully designed PowerBook 100 that I
need to open occassionally to coax back to life. I'd have to disagree
about the other (very positive, mind you) comments and say that in my
case, iBook HD replacement is a matter of good screw drivers and a
very detailed list of steps taken and parts removed.

Regardless of what is the outcome of this, I know what I'm doing over
the holidays. Any recommendations for a 60 - 100 GB drive for the beast?

Thanks, again.

Re: iBook and high speed internet and cable splitter

2005-11-30 Thread Sionnach Aisling
Besides looking for a splitter that isn't cheap, you
should know that most digital setups now want to run
with splitters that will transfer at 1ghz... Go
splitter shopping and tell me how many 1ghz splitters
you find.

You CAN find them, but your general run of the mill
splitters that you pick up at walmart and whatnot are
usually 800mhz.

Cable internet and digital cable do not like running
through an 800mhz splitter.

Spend the extra effort looking for a 1ghz splitter and
your results will be rewarded. I know Best Buy
carries them, but they also carry the 800mhz variety
as well (and quite a lot of them). You'll notice that
the 1ghz splitters are usually quite a bit mroe money
as well (ie ~$1.50 for a cheap splitter and more like
~$12.00 for a quality 1ghz one.)

Re: iBook and high speed internet and cable splitter

2005-11-29 Thread jocbr8

Dear Listers,
I recently hooked up my new iBook to high speed Internet cable via a
new cable splitter. The TV and DVD player is also on the cable
splitter. it worked find for 4 days. Then when I booted up, today, on
my laptop, there was no response from the modem and I could not get
online.

I called tech support at the cable co. and determined that the cable
modem worked fine, when it was the only thing hooked up to the cable
outlet (the TV and VCR/DVD player not hooked up). Tech support told me
that splitters wear out or burn out or something. He said I should pay
$30 and order another cable outlet to be installed in the wall for the
computer. Then I can use the old cable outlet for the TV and DVD player.

His other suggestion was to get a good cable splitter from the main
cable office and see if it lasts longer than the one I bought at
Walmart.

Has anyone had of such a problem? What kind of work-around worked for
you? I'd rather not order another cable outlet, if possible. I'd like
the TV, laptop, and DVD/VCR to all work off one cable outlet with a
splitter.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
 Jocelyn

Re: iBook keyboards

2005-11-20 Thread VICTORIA.DUGGAN

Hi Ruffin

I think that if you want a keyboard that feels the same as the 500
ibook you need a Pismo with decent spec the Pismo is commanding a
better price than I books at the moment! but on the up side the parts
from your ibook G3 if the spec is good can be swapped into the Pismo
(not from the G4 ibook Though.

Are you UK Based or US if you are Uk based Get intouch with Malc Just
ask up on the list he will see it as he is one of the only guys i
trust to get powerbook parts from in the Uk. If you are US based Then
sorry do not know (I am UK).

Hope this helps vicki

iBook G3 14 startup problems

2005-11-15 Thread Jean Sinervo
We have an iBook G3 800mhz 14 that has developed startup problems.
Last year it was through the Apple extended repair program for the
video/logic board issue and has been working well since.

This week, it has been locking up during use (OS 9.1), shut down and
restarted using the keyboard commands. I was told that one time it
started up and exhibited the same garbled lines on the screen as it had
before it went to Apple for the logic board repair. I haven't been able
to reproduce that since, however. I have attempted to reset PRAM
(letting it chime 3-5 times), reset the power manager using the keyboard
commands, removed all power from it, let it sit for a few hours,
attempted to restart using the power on key.

Sometimes, upon attempt to restart I hear one long (2-3 second) tone
before the startup chime. Sometimes I just hear the startup chime. In
either case, I don't hear the drive spinning up or anything beyond the
chime, and see no sign of life on the screen - it stays dark.

I tried reseating and removing the memory with no change in results.
Have attempted startup from both the AC power and just the battery
(which is fully charged).

Attempts to startup from a boot CD result in a startup chime, the sound
of the CD drive spinning for several seconds, and then more silence and
darkness.

Suggestions?

end of iBook display problem -- what's that burning smell?

2005-11-13 Thread dads
The saga is over. This weekend I took apart my dual usb iBook 3
separate times to install a used (reportedly good) display. After the
first two times, it all seemed fine for a few minutes, then flickered
in an out, then finally the backlight went off. The third time the
backlight never came on, but I could vaguely see the screen; enough
to power down. I sat there and finished watching a football game,
iBook powered down and closed on my lap, when suddenly I heard
a popf, kind of like a Christmas tree bulb had blown. A metallic,
burned-fuse kind of smell wafted from the back of the grill. I
immediately removed the battery and resigned as chief mac mechanic of
our household.

As I sort through the wreckage in an attempt to salvage what still
works, I have a few questions of those wiser than me.

1. What was that popfing sound, that smell? Dare I try to boot again?

2. I gathered from this list that a dead screen iBook that will still
run an external monitor has a problem with the reed switch, the
screen, or the backlight/inverter board. All of these are in the
display assembly, or so I thought. The display I purchased was
putatively good, but appeared to have the same problem as the
original. Is there anything else that might have caused my problem,
or was the second screen possibly defective as well?

Thanks for any and all information

Erik

iBook CD Problem

2005-11-12 Thread Amanda Ward

Hi All...

I have a problem with my iBook (G3-500 Dual USB). It will not play an
audio CD... keeps ejecting it... constantly! If I put in a program CD,
it stays in and shows up on the desktop. I can't, for the life of me,
understand what the difference is.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks,

Amanda

Have you tried different audio CDs?

Mongolian Hordes technique: n. [poss. from the Sixties counterculture
expression `Mongolian clusterfuck' for a public orgy] Development by gang

on a job better performed by a few skilled ones (but see bazaar). Also
called `Chinese Army technique'; see also Brooks's Law.

iBook g3 screen replacement....

2005-11-11 Thread dads

Greetings,

I'm in midstream on replacing the display of my iBook (g3, 600 mhz)
and wanted to check in quickly. I bought a replacement display
assembly on eBay and installed it. The computer booted up, and the
screen lit up. I poured myself a drink, celebrated, went to bed. This
afternoon the screen started flickering almost as soon as I fired it
up. Tonight I plan to go back in and do the installation again. I
suspect I may have missed an element or two, or not affixed things as
tight as tight can be. For example, after behaving properly for the
first few hours (orange/green) the power plug went dark, suggesting
other connectivity issues. Based on these two diagnostic points
(flickering screen, dead power plug) does anybody have any other
words of wisdom?

Regards,

Erik Ness

iBook display problem -- magnet orientation?

2005-11-11 Thread dads
In follow to my previous post, the first thing I did was simply flip the
orientation of the reed switch magnet. At least for now, the screen has ceased
its flaky behavior and the battery is charging properly again. How strange is
that?

Cheers,

Erik
