Re: [Audyssey] tips on programming

2012-04-02 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Thomas, wow, I wasn't aware Win 8 was as crazy as that.

I thought they were supposed to be doing a big push for accessibility and are
supposedly developing their own screen reader a'la Voiceover?… Yes?…

Anyway, on the subject of Mac / iOS, remember that all the dev tools are free
so yes, it will cost a bit up front but after that, with the exception of your
developer membership ($99 per year) everything you need to write apps is free.
Plus, the Mac OS updates are like $29 so even that is ridiculously inexpensive!
:)

If you wanted, you could also look for a refurbished Mac Mini which would be
more than capable of running XCode. So you could use that for your development
machine. -Just some thoughts…

Cara :)

Hi Cara,

Wow! I had no idea that there were that many blind iPhone users. I knew they
were becoming popular, people have mentioned them a lot on lists, but
definitely I underestimated the actual size of those who own and use them.
Which goes to show that there is a substantial market that is being overlooked
because of the prevailing opinion that Windows is the only show in town.

That 1,238 members of the VI Phone list is larger than Audyssey and I believe
the audio games forum combined. That's a huge market we could in theory target
if we wanted to break into it.

As for getting a Mac and developing games for Mac's and iPhones I've definitely
thought about it. I don't have the cash right now, but I've been thinking about
switching to Mac for quite a while now do to purely practical reasons.

One, I'm beta testing Windows 8 and to be perfectly honest about it I'm not
impressed. There are things here and there I like about Windows 8, but over all
I don't really care for it. Many of the UI changes such as the ribbons, the new
start screen setup, and the general look and feel of the OS isn't appealing to
me. Its designed for a touch screen and if you are blind and have to use a
keyboard to get around its not really that user friendly or intuitive. The
desktop has pretty much been phased out of use so I can't just copy my icons to
the desktop like on prior versions of Windows which means I either have to dock
them to the taskbar, fight with the confusing startscreen arrangement, or use
run to launch the program. That part of it royally sucks. So I'm not really
looking forward to using Win 8 in any copacity for my personal use.

Second, while I am a faithful Linux user I'm smart enough to see that
accessibility isn't as good as it could be. Apple is still far ahead because
they have a dedicated team of developers who work on VoiceOver and do access
testing with Cocoa to make sure the standard graphics toolkit etc is reasonably
accessible with VoiceOver out of the box. As a result when I looked at 10.7 I
couldn't believe how user friendly and accessible the design was, and it just
keeps getting better.

With Ubuntu 12.04 in some regards access took a massive step backwards. Unity
3D the default graphical environment is an accessibility nightmare. The Unity
2D environment is much better, but I still find installing gnome-classic as the
most accessible graphical environment to date for Linux. Its a workable
solution, but not without doing some extra configuration and having some
experience configuring the system to have maximum accessibility. That's fine
for an experienced Linux user like myself, as I know how to configure it to get
it to do what I want, but experience or not its still frustrating to have to
reconfigure everything to get access working as good as it can be.

So I've been thinking that Mac OS right now might cost more up front to invest
in, but its probably the best solution for a blind user. It seems Apple's
accessibility has been growing by leaps and bounds and its worth the investment.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] tips on programming

2012-04-02 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Thomas, you would need to create a basic app in XCode on a Mac, but that is
as simple as opening XCode and creating a new project. Once you do that, you
can use any number of interpreters.

Here's a link to a Python interpreter on the Apple App Store.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/python-for-ios/id485729872?ls=1&mt=8

So you can write in Python if you choose. I haven't looked these up, but there
are also apparently even several BaSIC interpreters for iOS as well.

So the quick answer is yes, you can code for iOS with other languages.

Hi Michael,

What game specifically is giving you this issue? If it is one of the
GMA Games I can tell you the keys are tied to a specific user account.
If You had a Michael account and then used Mike the next time you'd have
to get a new registration key or remove the Mike account and add a
Michael account instead. Hope that makes sense.

Hi,

Ok, since the arrow keys are working, it is definitely not the Jaws thing. How
about, in many of my games you must use the enter key next to the letters, not
the enter key on the number pad. Both will work in my game menu program and
some of the games but not others.

Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please

2012-04-02 Thread Desiree Oudinot
Hi,
The only explanation I can come up with that hasn't been mentioned on
this thread so far would be to make sure an antivirus program or
firewall isn't blocking the game. I don't see why it would try to
block the Kitchensinc games, since none of them connect to the
internet, but Top Speed will almost certainly make your firewall pop
up a few times. You just have to click on the allow button and it
should work after that. A hotkey for jaws would be useful for figuring
out if this is the problem. Then your friend can load Jaws and see if
a window from his firewall or antivirus is there. If the music is too
loud, he can go into the volume control and turn down the volume for
the application. It's probably not his computer that's frozen,
probably just the game, and after he figures out whether this is the
problem, he can either click on the appropriate button to run it
properly or simply go into task manager by hitting control shift
escape and killing the program that way, saving him from having to do
a reboot.

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp Weapons Thoughts

2012-04-02 Thread Dakotah Rickard
The Glock 19 can also be converted, paralegally, into an autofiring
weapon by filing down the trigger break. I don't know how to do it,
but I think it's funny, in a sort of scary way.

As for the weapons stuff, what I essentially invisioned in my post was.

1: melee weapons
2: Pistols
3: Shotguns
4: Scoped Rifles
5: Submachineguns (essentially somewhere between a pistol and an
automatic rifle, usually not held one handed but can be in a pinch,
carbine length or shorter, 6: battle rifles/assault rifles (the
difference being the size of bullet fired as both are automatic), 7:
flamethrower (although I suggest that as a precaution against poluting
the environment even further with fire and toxins, the benzine be
removed from the fuel, essentially making the device a gasoline
shooting, flame on, water gun), 8: Chainsaw, 9 or 0: Light Machineguns
(machineguns are light, medium, or heavy, and this applies not only to
weight but to size of ammunition and amount carried, with light
usually carried by specially trained infantry), 0 or hyphen: minigun
(Actually, the minigun is probably a medium machinegun, meaning it
could be carried in emergencies but is probably best used in
emplacements. Occasionally, mediums are vehicle mounted.)

Actually, if we were going to follow my idea, I suggest strongly that
the minigun, for several reasons listed below, be changed to fire .45
ammo, which should I think be the same price as 9mm, because both are
very popular and quite old. The .45 ACP cartridge fires the largest
bullet in swamp so far, which would make it perfect for a medium
machinegun. Also, because the 7.62, if we followed my idea, would be
used by the M-40 sniper rifle in Option 4, AK-47/M-14 battle rifle in
secondary option 6, the M-60 in option 9 or 0, and the minigun in
option 0 or hyphen. That makes four users of 7.62MM, the most
expensive bullet in the game at four reputation a bullet to purchase.
Since the minigun fires an ungodly number of these little guys, it's
about 1200 rep to fill it up. If .45 ACP was used, and if it was the
same price as 9MM is now, which I think is 24 reputation, the minigun
could be filled for I think about 620, about half the price.

I'll end on this note. I don't know what Kai is doing right now. I
know that, so far, Kai and Jeremy have been a great team, and I hope
that my occasional criticisms haven't made either one sore at me. If
what's happened so far is any indication, there's a lot of good stuff
to look forward to.

Hi Orin,

Yeah, but I guess as long as it is on their own hardware Apple doesn't
care. They just get piffy with people who have non-apple hardware
attempting to virtualize Mac OS along side Linux or Windows. As long as
people pay for the software why should they care if it is on a Toshiba,
Del, Compaq, etc? I suppose its all a part of their marketing strategy.
If you want the software then they require you run it exclusively on
their hardware and only their hardware.

That said, there are ways to get around it if someone doesn't mind
violating a few rules. I've seen some Youtube videos where people have
installed VMware Player and got Mac OS to work on their desktop or
laptop. Unfortunately it requires an Intel processor to work
successfully and half my machines use AMD processors so virtualizing Mac
OS on this laptop wouldn't work at all.

Thanks but I remembered to do that because that is the only way I got them
to work for me when I installed them. He can see all of the games in the
game menu and he can click on the name of a game, but once it goes to that
particular game, he can not click on any of the options for that game, like
start game, exit, change voice, change rate, nothing.

Hey Mama Peach and all

I think I recall what the issue might be your friend is having. Since
Jim's games automatically extract themselves to the winkit folder when
installed, I believe they extract to the program files folder as opposed to
the programx86 folder where the main Kitchen's in should be. I just
remembered someone else having a similar issue. All that needs done is to
just copy the game files into the other folder.

Hi,

Hmmm...It shouldn't matter If he quits Jaws before or after the game
starts. Once Jaws is unloaded it frees up the keyboard hooks it uses to
monitor keyboard input and DirectInput can acquire full control of the
keyboard. Although, it might be worth a try to test this just to be

Re: [Audyssey] tips on programming

2012-04-02 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Cara,

Wow! I had no idea that there were that many blind iPhone users. I knew
they were becoming popular, people have mentioned them a lot on lists,
but definitely I underestimated the actual size of those who own and use
them. Which goes to show that there is a substantial market that is
being overlooked because of the prevailing opinion that Windows is the
only show in town.

That 1,238 members of the VI Phone list is larger than Audyssey and I
believe the audio games forum combined. That's a huge market we could in
theory target if we wanted to break into it.

As for getting a Mac and developing games for Mac's and iPhones I've
definitely thought about it. I don't have the cash right now, but I've
been thinking about switching to Mac for quite a while now do to purely
practical reasons.

One, I'm beta testing Windows 8 and to be perfectly honest about it I'm
not impressed. There are things here and there I like about Windows 8,
but over all I don't really care for it. Many of the UI changes such as
the ribbons, the new start screen setup, and the general look and feel
of the OS isn't appealing to me. Its designed for a touch screen and if
you are blind and have to use a keyboard to get around its not really
that user friendly or intuitive. The desktop has pretty much been phased
out of use so I can't just copy my icons to the desktop like on prior
versions of Windows which means I either have to dock them to the
taskbar, fight with the confusing startscreen arrangement, or use run to
launch the program. That part of it royally sucks. So I'm not really
looking forward to using Win 8 in any copacity for my personal use.

Second, while I am a faithful Linux user I'm smart enough to see that
accessibility isn't as good as it could be. Apple is still far ahead
because they have a dedicated team of developers who work on VoiceOver
and do access testing with Cocoa to make sure the standard graphics
toolkit etc is reasonably accessible with VoiceOver out of the box. As a
result when I looked at 10.7 I couldn't believe how user friendly and
accessible the design was, and it just keeps getting better.

With Ubuntu 12.04 in some regards access took a massive step
backwards. Unity 3D the default graphical environment is an
accessibility nightmare. The Unity 2D environment is much better, but I
still find installing gnome-classic as the most accessible graphical
environment to date for Linux. Its a workable solution, but not without
doing some extra configuration and having some experience configuring
the system to have maximum accessibility. That's fine for an experienced
Linux user like myself, as I know how to configure it to get it to do
what I want, but experience or not its still frustrating to have to
reconfigure everything to get access working as good as it can be.

So I've been thinking that Mac OS right now might cost more up front to
invest in, but its probably the best solution for a blind user. It seems
Apple's accessibility has been growing by leaps and bounds and its worth
the investment.

Cheers!

Hi Orin,

Unfortunately, the only way to program games and apps for iOS devices is
to program it in Objective C with their proprietary tools and
proprietary APIs. Plus since Apples license agreement for Mac OS prevent
companies like VMware adding virtualization support for Mac OS to their
virtual machines we end up having to buy a Mac to do it. As a result its
not really a viable option for most developers as there is quite a bit
of startup cost involved in acquiring the hardware and software required
to write iOS applications. That's why I definitely won't be writing

Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please

That is, in a word, bizarre. I've never encountered that problem on any
of my computers. Not even my newer laptop which has an AMD64 processor
and Windows 7 on it. I've even run several of Jim Kitchens games on my
Linux computers using Wine, the Windows emulator, without experiencing
that issue.

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp Weapons Thoughts

2012-04-02 Thread Ken
Yes, I'd love to see the Mac 10. This handgun can, though illlegally, be
converted into a fully automatic weapon which fires, I kid you not, 32.5
rounds per second. That would put t on a par with the minigun!

Subject: [Audyssey] Swamp Weapons Thoughts

Hello Gamers, and Jeremy Kaldobsky in particular.

I was thinking about some things, having played Swamp 1.9 for a little
while. We are now at the point where many weapons options are
possible. What I mean by that is that, for example, we could have
pistol options.

We now have nothing that uses .45 ACP, so it has been removed from
play. However, there are weapons ranging from the standard m-1911
pistol to the Mac-10 and similar submachineguns that could use .45
ACp.

But we already have the Glock 19 and the MP5, or so you might say.
However, we could still bring this into play, without limiting
functionality. It would involve rearranging some things and changing
another, but I get the inspiration from the way things were once in
Swamp anyway, so it shouldn't be a surprise to any but the newest
players.

When Jeremy first provided the silencer option for the pistol, it was
accessed by pressing the number 2 twice. It, in effect, loaded another
weapon file into play, the file for the silenced pistol. I suggest
that we could have multiple options under a category by this method,
so we could have the Glock 19, which uses 9MM and the, I think it's
Springfield m-1911 or anything else that uses .45 ACP. You could
access the Glock 19 by pressing the number 2 one time, and the
Springfield by pressing it again, or if switching from another weapon,
by pressing it twice. Also, I'm sure it would be possible to do that
if the character only had one of those pistols, pressing the number 2
would go straight to it, no matter whether it was the Glock or the
Springfield.

Brief list of rearrangements and additions:
Press 1:
Axe or Machete. Machete has a faster rate but less overall damage)

Press 2:
Glock 19 using 9MM or Springfield M-1911 which uses .45 ACP. There's
no reason that both couldn't be suppressed, although they'd require
different suppressors. The .45 should, I feel, have less range, be
louder, and do more damage.

Press 3:
Browning Citori or Benelli, both using shotgun shells.

Press 4:
Winchester using 5.56 MM or M40 using 7.62MM.

Press 5:
MP5 using 9MM or Mac-10 using .45 ACP. I suggest that they could also
be suppressed, but Mac-10 has shorter range and is louder.

Press 6:
AR-15 using 5.56 or AK (47 or otherwise) which uses 7.62. Someone has
already done what appears to be an outstanding job of making an AK-47
sounding rifle in one of the weapons mods in the Swamp shared Dropbox
folder under the weapons.zip "Assault" folder. Alternatively, the m14
Battle Rifle could be used.

Press 7:
Flamethrower, would use fuel and would be so awesome. Zombie
Survivors' Guide says no, but I say barbecued dead-head. Military
flamethrowers could be called the M-2, but flamethrowers are
surprisingly, and scarily, easy to build at home. I could build one,
and I know very little about pipes and such.

Press 8:
Chainsaw which uses fuel.

Press 9:
I can't think of anything, although we could just move the next
category back one.

Press 0:
M60 which uses 7.62MM or M-249, I think it is, SAW (Squad Automatic
Weapon) which uses 5.56MM.

Press Hyphen:
Vulcan Minigun which uses 7.62MM like a beast.

I have recommended that the Winchester and m-40 be combined here,
rather than separated as they were, both to save space on the number
row for future weapons and because their functions are similar.
Also, be aware that 9MM and 5.56MM are both used thrice, with .45 ACP,
shotgun shells, and fuel being used twice.

This is another one of my trademark long e-mails, so I beg pardon and
hope you all made it through.

Happy Killin'.

Signed:
Dakotah Rickard

Re: [Audyssey] tips on programming

2012-04-02 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Philip,

Thanks. Hopefully this project will turn out as good as it sounds. At
this point its as much experimental as based on background research.
this will be the first time an audio game developer will be considering
using SDL, the Simple Direct Media Layer, as a core part of an audio
game engine. I'm unclear how successful I'll be with it because SDL
Mixer is a very very generic API for mixing and playing audio. While it
has 2d stereo panningwhich is fine for some games I'll probably have to
invest some time in developing some modules for FMOD or OpenAL for
anything that requires 5.1 3d audio support.

That said, I have a pretty good idea of what should be possible using
this engine. There are some limitations like the lack of 5.1 surround
sound support for more realistic 3d audio environments, no force
feedback support for joysticks, and things like that, but I can think of
several good games that don't require those advanced features anyway. I
know several games for Linux that are decent games that don't really
need that sort of thing to be good. There is Lin City which is a free
open source clone of Sim City. There is Free Civ which is a clone of
Civilization. There is Flight Gear which is a clone of Microsoft Flight
Simulator. Not to mention all the free arcade games like Asteroids,
Missile Command, Frozen Bubble, Super Tux, Packman, etc. All are written
using SDL so even though its not in the same league as DirectX I think
we can bring some relatively decent games to the platform. Plus as I'm
not dealing with a lot of 3d graphics and such Python should be able to
handle the games well enough.

Cheers!

Hi Thomas,

Then we're on the same wavelength. Best of luck with your engine, I

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp Weapons Thoughts

2012-04-02 Thread john
I'm no weapons expert, could you clarify which general type of
weapon would be attached to each key, such as rifles pistols etc?

- Original Message -
From: Dakotah Rickard I was thinking about some things, having played Swamp 1.9 for a
little

while. We are now at the point where many weapons options are
possible. What I mean by that is that, for example, we could have
pistol options.

We now have nothing that uses .45 ACP, so it has been removed
from

play. However, there are weapons ranging from the standard m-1911
pistol to the Mac-10 and similar submachineguns that could use
.45

ACp.

But we already have the Glock 19 and the MP5, or so you might
say.

However, we could still bring this into play, without limiting
functionality. It would involve rearranging some things and
changing
another, but I get the inspiration from the way things were once
in

Swamp anyway, so it shouldn't be a surprise to any but the newest
players.

When Jeremy first provided the silencer option for the pistol, it
was
accessed by pressing the number 2 twice. It, in effect, loaded
another
weapon file into play, the file for the silenced pistol. I
suggest
that we could have multiple options under a category by this
method,
so we could have the Glock 19, which uses 9MM and the, I think
it's

Springfield m-1911 or anything else that uses .45 ACP. You could
access the Glock 19 by pressing the number 2 one time, and the
Springfield by pressing it again, or if switching from another
weapon,
by pressing it twice. Also, I'm sure it would be possible to do
that
if the character only had one of those pistols, pressing the
number 2
would go straight to it, no matter whether it was the Glock or
the

Springfield.

Brief list of rearrangements and additions:
Press 1:
Axe or Machete. Machete has a faster rate but less overall
damage)

Press 2:
Glock 19 using 9MM or Springfield M-1911 which uses .45 ACP.
There's
no reason that both couldn't be suppressed, although they'd
require
different suppressors. The .45 should, I feel, have less range,
be

louder, and do more damage.

Press 3:
Browning Citori or Benelli, both using shotgun shells.

Press 4:
Winchester using 5.56 MM or M40 using 7.62MM.

Press 5:
MP5 using 9MM or Mac-10 using .45 ACP. I suggest that they could
also

be suppressed, but Mac-10 has shorter range and is louder.

Press 6:
AR-15 using 5.56 or AK (47 or otherwise) which uses 7.62. Someone
has
already done what appears to be an outstanding job of making an
AK-47
sounding rifle in one of the weapons mods in the Swamp shared
Dropbox
folder under the weapons.zip "Assault" folder. Alternatively, the
m14

Battle Rifle could be used.

Press 7:
Flamethrower, would use fuel and would be so awesome. Zombie
Survivors' Guide says no, but I say barbecued dead-head. Military
flamethrowers could be called the M-2, but flamethrowers are
surprisingly, and scarily, easy to build at home. I could build
one,

and I know very little about pipes and such.

Press 8:
Chainsaw which uses fuel.

Press 9:
I can't think of anything, although we could just move the next
category back one.

Press 0:
M60 which uses 7.62MM or M-249, I think it is, SAW (Squad
Automatic

Weapon) which uses 5.56MM.

Press Hyphen:
Vulcan Minigun which uses 7.62MM like a beast.

I have recommended that the Winchester and m-40 be combined here,
rather than separated as they were, both to save space on the
number

row for future weapons and because their functions are similar.
Also, be aware that 9MM and 5.56MM are both used thrice, with .45
ACP,

shotgun shells, and fuel being used twice.

This is another one of my trademark long e-mails, so I beg pardon
and

hope you all made it through.

Happy Killin'.

2012-04-02 Thread Dakotah Rickard
Yeah, since the sounds are .wav, and since the language file is
available, you could turn it into anything, from alien invasion to
putting condoments on runaway hamburgers and hotdogs.

Still, keep in mind that too heavily mod the game and you'll run
around like a crazy, doing random weird stuff... Actually, never mind.
That'd be amusing.

Player under star wars mod: Take out those wookies at the command base!

Swamp Player: What the heck are you talking about! Zombies are about
to overrun me!

Star Wars Player: Zombies? Get off this channel. This is a rebel

For anyone interested, I've just assembled the newly updated language file

I've also seen people use this file to create screen reader dictionary files

Hi there.

The person who is having trouble starting those two games might try
running them as administrator. Hit the context key on the menu item that
you would normally press enter on to launch the game and arrow down to run
as administrator. Are they getting an error message?

Hi,
It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't

Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations
that fix that problem.
If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit,
then you have those vb6 libraries and those games will work.
Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just
install them.

When you installed the games did you choose install as administrator?
This choice is found by using the context menu key, which is to the right
of the space bar between the alt and control keys.

The only thing that springs to mind immediately is that Jaws or
another screen-reader might be interfering. If your friend can put the
screen-reader to sleep or just unload it while he plays, that would
likely do the trick. Just be certain that you make hotkeys that are
easy to remember for loading the game once you quit the screen-reader.
Most screen readers make a hotkey such as control-alt-n for loading
NVDA as an example. Hope that helps.

Hi,

It might be a problem. By default Windows 7 comes with Program files,
where 64-bit apps goes, and Program Files (x86), where 32-bit apps goes,

The only thing that springs to mind immediately is that Jaws or
another screen-reader might be interfering. If your friend can put the
screen-reader to sleep or just unload it while he plays, that would
likely do the trick. Just be certain that you make hotkeys that are
easy to remember for loading the game once you quit the screen-reader.
Most screen readers make a hotkey such as control-alt-n for loading
NVDA as an example. Hope that helps.

Hi,

It might be a problem. By default Windows 7 comes with Program files,
where 64-bit apps goes, and Program Files (x86), where 32-bit apps goes,
and the other directory shouldn't exist. I recommend he check what was
installed to Program Files (86), and then try and install them to the
proper location. In 90% of the cases most apps should go in c:\Program
Files (x86).

Yep, that is where I had him install them to. Here is what happened when
he tries to play.
He clicks on Kitchens Inc on his desktop. The game loads just fine. He is
able to arrow through the different games. He lands on say Spanker. He is
able to click on that. Now when he arrows through these options, start
game, change voice, change volume, etc., he can't click on anything, not
even exit. So he tries to get out of this, but with no luck. He can't hit
escape or alt f4, it just seems to have locked up his machine. He has to
reboot his machine in order to make it go away. On River Raiders, he can
load the game, arrow through the menu options but he cannot click on
anything. He can hit the escape key and the game shuts down just fine.

Me either. It makes no sense. I noticed something when we were looking
around on his machine which is weird to me because my machine doesn't
show this. When I had him go into the C drive to find program files, he
has three program files folders, one is just program files, one is
program files 86 and the other is program files X86. I only have program
files and program files X86. Why would his have three and would this
matter in any way?

sleep before playing the game? That seems to cause issues with most games.

Yep, that is where I had him install them to. Here is what happened when he
tries to play.
He clicks on Kitchens Inc on his desktop. The game loads just fine. He is
able to arrow through the different games. He lands on say Spanker. He is
able to click on that. Now when he arrows through these options, start game,
change voice, change volume, etc., he can't click on anything, not even
exit. So he tries to get out of this, but with no luck. He can't hit escape
or alt f4, it just seems to have locked up his machine. He has to reboot his
machine in order to make it go away. On River Raiders, he can load the game,
arrow through the menu options but he cannot click on anything. He can hit
the escape key and the game shuts down just fine. Same thing on Top Speed 3.

far, he can't go past the menu options because he cannot hit his enter key

Hi there.

The person who is having trouble starting those two games might try running
them as administrator. Hit the context key on the menu item that you would
normally press enter on to launch the game and arrow down to run as
administrator. Are they getting an error message?

On Mar 31, 2012, at 9:40 PM, Phil Vlasak wrote:

Hi,
It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't

Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations
that fix that problem.
If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit,
then you have those vb6 libraries and those games will work.
Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just
install them.

When you installed the games did you choose install as administrator?
This choice is found by using the context menu key, which is to the right
of the space bar between the alt and control keys.

Maybe that person is running JAWS, and they don't quit or put it to
sleep before playing the game? That seems to cause issues with most games.

Hi Gamers,
A friend of mine is having a problem with a couple of games. We both
have installed the two games, River Raiders and Top Speed 3. I am able
to use the games just fine. He, on the other hand, for some crazy
reason, can't click on a menu option to start the games or anything.
Any idea why this is happening to him. We both are running Windows 7,
64 bit machines. Like I said, both games work perfectly for me, but he
can't even get past the main menus on either game. Please, any help
would be appreciated.

Re: [Audyssey] tips on programming

Hi Thomas,

Then we're on the same wavelength. Best of luck with your engine, I hope
it's well received and that you make some nice games with it!

Kind regards,

Hi Philip,

Yeah, I see. You have a good point there. I didn't really think about it
that way, but you are right. I could have just stated features x, y, and
z and left it at that rather than comparing it to BGT. I certainly
understand your opinion, and why you feel like I was criticizing BGT.
Next time I'll be more mindful of this, and attempt to just stick to
features x, y, and z without attempting to compare a product of mine to
someone else's product. As you say most people can do that themselves by
downloading and trying each product and find out what they personally
liked or disliked.

Obviously, I'm excited about the new project, and I suppose I went a bit
over the top. There are a lot of little things I like about my new
engine. While I generally prefer C or C++ I'm growing to like Python
more and more because it is quick, simple, and allows me to just do
something without a lot of unecessary overhead. In a way the new engine
is like BGT in that all the core modules are compiled, but are wrapped
with a very quick and simple scripting language that allows me to get
things done quicker and easier than I ever could in C++. In addition,
I've actually redesigned some aspects of the engine from scratch to
simplify them for myself as well as new programmers that never occured
to me before.

For example, in the Genesis engine, the one written in C++, I have a
header file called serface.h which has several surface constants like
dirt, snow, water, mud, stone, etc. While it is a pretty comprehensive
list I'm still finding I have to add to that list of constants because
as I write more games I need more customized surfaces. Well, I've
totally simplified this in Open G3D.

Instead of passing a constant variable like SURFACE_STONE I can just
pass a string like "stone" which is far simpler than defining several
constant variables. Its totally flexable because I can use a string of
text to identify doors, walls, surfaces, etc which is not restricted to
some predefined constants. I like it, and I'm strongly considering
modifying the C++ version of the engine to adopt some of these new changes.

Cheers!

Hi Thomas,

These things are certainly true, but that was not what I was taking
issue with. My question was more along the lines of, why must you
target BGT specifically? Why can you not simply say that this engine
offers this and this feature, open source being considered a feature
in this case, and then let the users do the comparison based on what
they consider important? The end result when you write something like
that newsletter becomes, at least in my eyes, a side by side list
saying why your engine is superior. This is marketing, of course, but
I think it would be just as effective just to point out the advantages
that you see with your engine without putting other things down. It is
possible to mention advantages without mentioning specific products
that you want to beat, as it were. It's not really necessary as far as
I'm concerned. You say that you are frustrated that BGT is being
mentioned whenever someone is asking about developing audio games.
Could this be because of merit? It sounds, forgive me for saying so,
like a case of envy when viewed in that light.

To take an example. When I put out the Perilous Hearts concept demo, I
stressed the things that I thought made it worth playing. I could
easily have done a side by side comparison with Mota, and pointed out
things I didn't like about Mota and stated why my game does this or
that in a better way. I chose not to do this because it doesn't really
add to the effectiveness of my sales pitch, and it would be negative
for you as a fellow game designer in such a small community. This is
what I'm getting at. It's really not a question of what either of our
engines can or cannot do, but rather how these things are presented.
Naturally one does have to make direct comparisons sometimes, but I
feel personally that this went a bit over the top especially
considering the message from yesterday on top. I would like to just
coexist peacefully without arguing who's engine is the best. That's up
to the users. Make them aware of the features, cross platform or not,
networking or not, etc etc and then let them determine what they want.
I would be very surprised if people were not aware that there are
other options besides BGT, so I don't think this has to be stressed
any further as it is just common sense. No need to point out flaws in
other products in order to accomplish ones own success, in such a
small community as ours. That's really all I'm saying. I hope it makes
sens
