There is a housekeeping task that you need to go through, at http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/kk/gnome-3-0/ui/ you need to create the status of the completed translations. Statistics for each GNOME translator's work
Hi All, A few months ago there was a discussion on gnome-i18n about the issue of having translation statistics or a way to see easily how much work each translator is doing. Such a thing would be useful if, for example, you want to make an announcement of the localisation of GNOME 3.0 to your language and you want to show how much work each translator did. What's missing is to figure out a better algorithm to count the work when a translation is 'updated'. Because when a translation is added for the first time, it's simple to count the translated words. The current algorithm is 1. Obtain the before and after versions of a PO file. 2. Use 'pocount' to count the translated strings in both, note down the different 3. Use 'podiff' to count the 'changed' messages (message updates). Disadvantages a. 'pocount' shows sometimes less messages in the newer PO, so the difference is negative. Currently we do not count these numbers in. b. I did not establish the significance of the podiff changed messages. c. The figures are rough statistics. It should take several revisions before the statistics are exact. Features/Advantages a. The stats for a full GNOME release (gnome-2-30) and a language (el) takes about 20 minutes to complete b. You can specify which release to use or even a specific module. c. Made my own 'python-git' class. 'python-git' was erratic. There are many commit messages which are messy. For example, non-UTF8 text, e-mails structured as 'me at gmail dot com', a field 'Merge:'. d. Can show text colors. e. Allows to extend prior to April 2009; before then, GNOME used to have SVN. The actual translator name was in the comment. With this tool you can attribute correctly the actual translator. f. The way the tool works is it creates a temporary branch and then it removes the commits so that it can find the different editions of the PO file during the specified time period. Once the stats have been calculated, the temporary branch is gone and the repository switches back to 'master'. Your 7% translation was last touched in 2009. If there is a translation that the L10n page says that it is for branch 'gnome-2-32', I commit to branch 2-32 and I also commit a copy to 'master' so that they are in sync. Then, if there is any translation that needs to be committed, I can see it easily and I can commit. I just checked for you about the Kazakh translations; there are no translations pending. Another trick is to add your mailing list details on the Kazakh L10n.gnome.org page (you need to request from the list to add your mailing list). Then, whenever a translator submits a translation, you get an email to this mailing list. When you commit the translation, there is a second notification on the mailing list so the translation knows the work is completed. If you do not have a mailing list for Kazakh, you can set up a Google Groups group and use that for this purpose. Of course, fully translated GNOME means all files translated, but it's nice to have this intermediate goal where you translate the most visible strings. My suggestion would be to have a parallel page (let's call it "Compact"), similar to your http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/el/gnome-3-0/ui/ which would show the reduced PO files, after the filtering to remove schema/error/etc strings. This filtering would take place only in damned-lies. What damned-lies would do for each PO file that appears in the Compact page of statistics, 1. For each message in the PO file 2.If the message is already translated or fuzzy, add it anyway to the Compact PO file 3.If the message is not important (schema, CLI error message, etc), ignore it 4.Add the remaining messages to the Compact PO file Due to this, it would be fine to commit these reduced PO files, and you would not lose data. What would the translators do, 1. If you are a new team (few translations), do translations on the Compact page at damned-lies, until you complete them all fully. Once you achieved the first translation goal, go to the regular page for your language to continue the full translations, schemas, error messages and so on. 2. If you are an experienced team with good level of translations, ignore the Compact page and translate as you always have been doing. I would call this special page, http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/el/gnome-3-0/compactui/ (note the 'compactui'). There is the issue of having both http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/el/gnome-3-0/ui/ and http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/el/gnome-3-0/compactui/ at the same time. It would be ideal if the team coordinator for each language could set in the Preferences for their language to show either one or the other page for the UI translations. That is, you go to http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/LL for your language and it shows by default either the full UI translations URL or the Compact URL. However, the way this should be dealt with, is to simply create a new e-mail address for the purpose of open-source involvement. This issue comes up in most open-source projects. Ravi, There is no committer yet from the Burmese team. The process to get a member of the Burmese team to have a Git account is 1. See http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/RequestingAnAccount for the full details on getting a Git account. In the rest of the steps I describe some of the technicalities. 2. Visit http://l10n.gnome.org/ and create an account. In the account settings, select the Burmese team. If you do this correctly, you will be able to see your new account at the end of the http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/my/ 3. Submit a significant number of translated PO files as are requested at http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/RequestingAnAccount "A significant number" is generally interpreted as a handful of complete translations. To submit translations, log on with your new account at http://l10n.gnome.org/ and upload them there. Them, ask in this mailing list to have the commited. 4. Select your first member to get a Git account. It could be a person with some Unix skills, and relatively good internet connection. The Git commiter has to "clone" each GNOME project that you send translations to. For GNOME 3.2 the total size of the repositories should be between 1.4 to 2 GB. 5. In addition, I have the impression the Connectiva has done some work with a Guarani version of their Linux distribution. AFAIR, because "System" menu comes from an Ubuntu(?) patch,
changing the default "Desktop" menu of gnome-panel. Hence, the
string "System" is not in the gnome-panel source, and so marked

Yes I normally add manually "System" string, and it works... but every
time
I make msgmerge -U gnome-panel.po gnome-panel.HEAD.pot
"System" become fuzzy...
It should work as you expect if *both* files, gnome-panel.po and
gnome-panel.HEAD.pot have an msgid called "System". It has to be exactly
the same. If they do not, you get fuzzy or commented.
To verify that you do everything ok, make backup copies of both files
and edit them, so that you erase all strings apart from the msgid
"System" ones.
You can try to update them with msgmerge and observe what happens.
You might have put some strange diacritic (do those exist in Georgian?)
in the msgid that is not visible, but is there.
If you do no simplify your setup by creating minimal files and trying
out, it's difficult to figure out what's wrong.

1. For general instructions on how to use CVS, see

2. When you add a translation, you add it under po/ for the
corresponding project.
3. If you want to update the translation, you either
a. Obtain a copy ("checkout" or "co" -CheckOut) of the full source of
the package using the "cvs" tool
b. enter po/ and then run "intltool-update ka" to update the existing
Georgian translation, if it exists. If it does not exist, run
"intltool-update -P" to create a template file, then rename to ka.po and
translate with poEdit.
c. Upload ("Commit") the translation to GNOME CVS.
d. You may also update the ChangeLog file in the same directory. This
is best done using "emacs". You do not need to know much about emacs to
update the file; start emacs, press ESC, then x. Afterwards, type
"add-change"-Press tab to complete, then press Enter. Complete the
fields. Finally, save the file with Ctrl-x-c
e. If you just added a translation in a package, you need to add "ka"
to the supported languages of the package. This involves editing the
"configure.in" file in the main directory of the package as shown at
http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/gnome-applets/configure.in?r1=1.400&r2=1.401
In this example, the "ky" language has been added.
f. You also edit the main ChangeLog file of the package, as shown at

g. Then, if you run the CVS "commit" command in the main directory, it
will update those files.
h. In any case, if something goes wrong, it is possible to remove

Mr Ray said earlier, http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/11/msg00219.html I have been following the progress of the OFL through "debian-legal", the mailing list that is supposed to make sure whether a package goes to main or to non-free. This list appears to be a bunch of individuals that make their own interpretation of licenses. They are so unproductive that when someone tells them, "here is our draft license, please comment", they 1) avoid any constructive criticism, 2) wait until after the draft period has passed. They become very protective against the criticism and tend deem anything as non-free, even if the FSF thinks they are ok. Oh, the GFDL is "not free" either. This is an accessibility issue as well as a i18n issue: it's more difficult for users to access localizations if they have to hunt around for suitable fonts. I remember getting an email from a lady who had no idea where to find fonts for Vietnamese, and actually thought that meant she couldn't use her own language on her computer. She had been stuck that way for _years_. :( Hi Clytie, The general process goes like this; 1) The X server, Xorg, comes with a set of fonts. Therefore, one option is to get those fonts included in the next version of Xorg. Here, you have to wait when they accept additions in Xorg, and also spent time at the development mailing list. If you manage to do this, the fonts should be included in all distros by default with no extra work. 2) You can get the fonts included in your favourite distribution through the proper channels. You make a bug report, "Please add this and that font" and follow the process. 3) Once the fonts are in the distribution, the system (like GNOME) has to choose them to display text in your language. This is achieved through the preference () list found at /etc/fonts/fonts.conf. As no font covers all the Unicode range, the system has to mix in several fonts. Here you have to "fight" with other languages so that your prefered font gets used :). Interestingly enough, this is usually an issue between Greek and CJK... 8-] The "preference" list mentioned above creates three "virtual fonts", named "Sans", "Serif", and "Monospace". This are virtual, made up of glyphs from different fonts installed on your system. GNOME uses these virtual fonts and does not go into specifics; it's up to your system to have a proper preference list, so that the correct glyphs/characters are used. For DejaVu, there is currently work to add the glyphs from the Verajja font (Vietnamese), see https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/dejavu-fonts Personally, I am looking into Fedora Core and Ubuntu. Fedora has some suboptimal fonts for Greek; the end-users need to install manually "fonts-mgopen" and "fonts-dejavu". Once they do that, Greek shows acceptably. The fonts.conf file does not list DejaVu (now the prefered font for Greek) in the preference list, requiring manually settings in System/Preferences/Fonts Fedora has Dejavu 2.3 (latest) in their repository. Ubuntu has DejaVu 2.1 in the repository, which is old and does not contain all the glyphs for Greek (the Mono version at least). In addition, the configuration files (defoma, etc) appear to be broken, giving strange results in gnome-terminal (bug posted). However, Ubuntu lists DejaVu at the correct place (for Greek!) in fonts.conf. I am not sure if they manage to update DejaVu to 2.3. All in all, please consider the above as a guide to see how font support goes in your language. I've seen rather a lot of messages in other fora lately from or about people not being able to read this, see that, "I only see " - and the occasional "...it shows fine in MSOE/MSIE/MSWord etc., why can't these open source guys just make it work too?" and worse. Once in a while there's the "how did you write that character? - I can see it but not write it!". A free Linux distribution can only distribute free (as in freedom) fonts. If such free (as in freedom) font exist but are not in your distribution, one has to make the effort to add. So my take on the font issue is that there should exist at least one catch-all font that can be used on any platform, and where possible be used only when truly fit, or as a last resort. There is such a catch-all font, FreeFont, which has quite a good support for glyphs. There are some peculiar scripts that there is no free font yet, that Code 2001 (google for this) can cater for. However, Code 2001 is shareware. In addition, a new font, Stixfonts (www.stixfonts.org), to be released soon with a semi-free licence will add amazing support that not Win nor OS/X have. All in all, most of the issues encountered are configuration issues; making sure that free fonts are included by default in distributions. Or, people have fonts which are good, however they did not specify a free license so they may need to be contacted on this. As a final comment, for end-users to be able to read/write in their language, there is need for work to test your prefered distribution that no glitches are present. There are always minor issues about things that do not work, that are easy to fix before the release. Currently, Ubuntu 6.04 is under testing for an April release, as well as with OpenSUSE 10.1 and Fedora Core 5. Having documentation fully localised in your language
Dear All, Alexander Shopov brought up an issue with not fully translated stylesheets; when you try to generate documentation such as http://www.gnome.org/start/2.14/notes/pa/rnlookingforward.html you notice that the word "Figure" at the figure is not shown in Punjabi as well. The reason is because the translation of these entities is incomplete, at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/docbook/gentext/locale/ Check out your language to see if you are affected. These files are very important because they contain stock strings that are used in any DocBook XML documentation that you have translated in your language, whether that is PDF or HTML and so on. To fix, you can simply update the translation and file a bug report at http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=21935&atid=373747 under category "gentext". Hi All, If you would like to try out GNOME 2.14 to test your language without having to install, you may have a go with Forsight Linux, http://www.foresightlinux.com/ "Foresight Linux is a Distribution which showcases some of the latest and greatest from GNOME." You may install Forsight Linux or you may even use a so-called VMPlayer virtual machine image. For the last to work, you simply download the VMPlayer image and you run it with VMPlayer (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) which is free for Lin/Win. Hi Vladimer, This is some remarkable translation effort! :) I notice that the GIMP stats is problematic in all languages, therefore it is a generic issue. Regarding the translation of Gimp, it's important to add the full set of translation files (like gimp.po, gimp-plug-ins.po and so on), even if they are empty. This has to do with the way GIMP is built. If the maintainer tries soon to build GIMP, the process will break and he will contact us about this. Specifically, Language code, ISO 639-2: http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/englangn.html Country code, ISO 3166: http://www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/iso3166ma/02iso-3166-code-lists/list-en1.html Two points to note here: 1. For consistency, it is important to use language/country codes from the relevant ISO standard. Sadly, you will not get much sympathy if you try to deviate. 2. The locale codename, as derived from the language (and country code, if required), is not very much visible to the end user. The end-user will see the name of the language and they have to search a lot to find the locale codename. Actually, this is the most important message I want to pass with this e-mail. The locale codename should be chosen in such a way so that if other groups want to work with similar languages, they will be able to do so. In addition to the translation work in GNOME, you also need to register the Guarani locale with the GLIBC project. The locale will appear at http://www.sourceware.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/libc/localedata/locales/?cvsroot=glibc It is known that the GLIBC project is quite strict with the locale "codename" choice. If any part of the locale codename is not based on a corresponding standard, you have little (or none at all) chances to get the locale accepted :(. Therefore, I can see two choices 1. Use "gn_BR" as this type of Guarani you are working on is spoken in the country area of Brazil. 2. Use simply "gn", as the language is indeed Guarani and your project is the first one that tackles the language. If other groups from, let's say, Argentina, want to add their own translations, they will have to use "gn_AR". In other words, as you are the first, you can use "gn"! :) If Guarani Nhandeva is practically confined within the borders of Brazil, choose option 1 (gn_BR). If you think that the group you are working with will be more content if Brazil is not mentioned in the codename, then choose option 2, that is, the locale codename "gn" (no language specification). Dear Pema, I am not sure whether you are compiling Debian packages to create the LiveCD. If you can compile, you need the source package for "xkeyboard-config". The Debian package is http://the.earth.li/debian/pool/main/x/xkeyboard-config/ Xkeyboard-config is found at http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software_2fXKeyboardConfig From the same page you can find a link to the latest Dzongkha keyboard configuration file, http://webcvs.freedesktop.org/xlibs/xkbdesc/symbols/bt?view=markup There is one point that I am not sure about and I would like you to do some testing. I am not sure if the version of Debian/Mepis you are using has been configured to use xkeyboard-config or it is using the old xkb-data package. As far as I know, the old xkb-data package cannot be translated (easily). To make sure that you have the localisable xkeyboard-config, try to identify a file on your system called "xfree86.xml" which contains all the existing keyboard-related translations. If everything is ok, I think you simply need to place your translation (dz.po) in the po/ directory of the xkeyboard-config package and recompile. This should re-generate the xfree86.xml file. If anyone from the list has some insight or can do the regeneration of the xfree86.xml file, this would be great. In the worst case scenario, you could simply create manually a simplified version of the xfree86.xml file that includes only Dzongkha and English. This should save about 10MB on the LiveCD. Dear Pema,
To find out where the messages come from for each application you see on
your desktop, you can download all the .po files and do either command
line text searching or search from within KBabel.
To grab the latest versions of your translations, you can do in three
lines
1. wget -O desktop.html

Most of the strings that you see untranslated come from
gnome-control-center.
The string "Japanese Keyboard Options" comes from xkeyboard-config. I
have not seen it before, and I believe it's not in the existing PO file
yet.
In the Layout Names, "dz" is not found in any PO file. The reason is
that it is not described in xkeyboard-config yet, so the system code for
the keyboard is used here.
I think that at http://listserv.bat.ru/xkb/List.html they discus these
issues and they will be able to help by adding the name Dzongkha in the
list.
If you would like to manually add your language for your work, you can
edit xorg.xml/xfree86.xml and add an appropriate entry.
The file is found at
/etc/X11/xkb/rules/xfree86.xml
/etc/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.xml
/usr/share/libxklavier/xfree86.xml

To add Dzongkha, find the sections in the XML file. For

An easy fix is to use Javascript to obfuscate the e-mail addresses. This will require JavaScript capable Web browsers in order to view the addresses. For more on this, google on "javascript obfuscate e-mail address". That sounds a bit limiting, IMO. If it's really a problem, we can simply remove e-mails, or provide a direct "contact by e-mail form" so you'll get coordinator e-mail only if he actually responds ;) That would be a very option as well. For Indic languages I think there is no such differentiation. When changing fonts.conf, put the appropriate fonts in all three categories. When you see "sans", "serif" and "monospace" in GNOME, these are not specific fonts; these are sort of virtual fonts and the characters comes from the installed fonts according to the preference list. And the next step is to lobby distros to include your fonts in their default installation. If FreeSans/FreeMono is used, then there are issues with it and you need to fix with Ubuntu (or "fontconfig" at FreeDesktop). I have contacted them and Gora Mohanty has replied. I am still looking at the keyboard input issue. Documentation: Editing the ChangeLog file with emacs
Dear All,
This is a periodic update on some common translator tasks.
Please ignore if you already know this.
When adding/updating translations using CVS (or SVN, when it comes),
there is a ChangeLog file in the po/ directory that you can describe
your change.
Although the message may be always the same ("I updated the
translation", it's good to have it there.
There are a few ways to add this record to the ChangeLog file.
One of them is with the emacs editor, which has a special ChangeLog
mode. Don't be scared of emacs; I do not know emacs either, I am a vim
person.
First of all your distro may not have emacs installed. Simply use the
package manage to install it.
It's good to configure emacs so that it knows your e-mail address. This
way, the editing will be simpler.
Just add
(setq add-log-mailing-address "[EMAIL PROTECTED]")
into ~/.emacs
Once you added or updated your translation and you are in the po/
directory, run emacs (with no parameters).
It something goes wrong, you can always exit emacs with Ctrl-X Ctrl-C.
Then, press ESC and after that "x". Now you can type some sort of
command.
Type "add-change-log-entry" and press Enter. (You can also type "add-ch"
and press Tab for autocompletion of the word).
Emacs will read the ChangeLog file and prepare it so you can make your
addition.
What you will see looks like:

At this point, hit Ctrl-X Ctrl-C and you will be asked to save before

I just installed language support for Urdu on my Ubuntu Linux 6.06 and it worked without a problem. You mention you tried to install the language support using Synaptic. The recommended way to install the language support is by going to System/Administration/Language Support and selecting Urdu. Hi All, There is a meeting scheduled for tomorrow Friday, 07.07.2006, at 19:00 GMT, on Freenode, channel #xkbconfig. Sergey (svu) is organising the meeting to discuss rather technical issues about keyboard layout support in GNOME. The agenda includes: 1. GSwitchit API as GNOME-oriented keyboard services. Including GTK widget, gconf configuration, DBUS server etc 2. Whether gswitchit should go to separate project or become a real (non-virtual) part of some existing one. 3. Does it make sense to integrate SCIM with gswitchit? Especially if you know anything about SCIM, please join up. The current situation is a bit messy with two independent keyboard layout subsystems. It appears it would be good to expose our users to a single interface by integrating the two.
