[ha-Safran]: Mistaken Attribution of Himmelfarb quote

2011-07-25 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
I wrote a follow up to my blog article, Mistaken Attribution after
a columnist for the Jerusalem Post quoted my first column but did
not give a correct citation. The second part also includes
information about Milton Himmelfarb from his daughter.
http://kol-safran.blogspot.com/2011/07/mistaken-attribution-part-2.html
I now give advice on how to give citations to my blog articles.

The first article is about the statement, Jews earn like
Episcopalians, but vote like Puerto Ricans.

[ha-Safran]: RE: Prussian Emancipation Act of 1812 -- revisions

2011-07-11 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Yesterday I sent a message about my blog entry, Searching for the
Prussian Emancipation Act of 1812
http://kol-safran.blogspot.com/2011/07/searching-for-prussian-emancipation-act.html

I received information since publication that required changes to the
article. Today's version has those changes and an acknowledgment to
those who commented.

Google like a librarian' is the title of an article that appears in
the June 2011 issue of CRL News. Students are using Google for
searches everyday, but most don't know how to effectively use Google
when the first search fails to retrieve what they need.

Today's blog entry, Mistaken Attribution answers a query concerning
attribution of a quote to Milton
Himmelfarb. http://kol-safran.blogspot.com/2011/07/mistaken-attribution.html

After writing about the new dean for a library school, some of my

Re: [ha-Safran]: Martin Buber's The Way of Man

2011-06-01 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
At 11:44 PM 05/31/2011, you wrote:

Who translated The Way of Man According to the Teaching of the
Hasidim into English from German in 1950? Maurice Friedman did not
translate it. I have that in a written note from him. Furthermore, he
does not know who did the translation.

I thought this would be an easy question to answer since translators
should be recorded in the catalog record. I was wrong. I didn't
find the book in WorldCat. I did find it in the British Library and
the Jewish National Library. Neither listed a translator. The book
does appear in American and British editions. Maurice Friedman
wrote a biography and analysis of Buber, Martin Buber's Life and
Work. On page 64 Friedman talks about this work. Friedman did not
translate any of Buber's works before the fall of 1950 when Buber
asked him to translate the essay, On the Suspension of the Ethical.

The Way of Man According to the Teaching of the Hasidim also appears
in the collection, Hasidism and Modern Man,which was edited and
translated by Maurice Friedman.

If M. Friedman does not know the translator, then no one can find the
answer without digging into archival collections.

Israel Hayim Pollack, 1885-1945 wrote many Hebrew language and Humash

the low cost of entry. I don't think that I paid more than 50 cents
for any volume. Most of the time people are glad to give them away

Without the title your description is wanting. However, the value is
what people are willing to pay. There is no market for used Hebrew

Re: [ha-Safran]: Copyright -- transfer to new media

2010-11-08 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
At 12:42 AM 11/05/2010, you wrote:
Can one transfer a VHS to DVD only for archival purposes? Do
we really have to purchase brand new DVD's of all the wonderful VHS
tapes we have, that are no longer used because they equipment to show
them isn't made or isn't available anymore? Diary of Anne Frank,
Yentl, Hester Street, Rugrats Chanukah, and one could go on and
on? What if it's a VHS that is not available as a DVD?

These questions bother librarians and scholars, but the lawmakers did
not fully address all of these issues. In my next blog on copyright
I will deal with the questions concerning who does the copyright law
really protect? The British law, Statue of Anne (Copyright Act
1709), the first copyright legislation, seems to protect the printers
and publishers because only publishers could own a
copyright. Napoleonic Code was more concerned about the intellectual
property rights of the creator; copyright was automatic upon
creation. American law seems to favor the authors and creators over
the publishers. The Berne Convention combines these protections and
guess who loses -- scholars, librarians, and libraries.

If a DVD says For Home Use Only it means that if can not be used
any where else. You can't borrow a DVD from the library and show it
without securing another license. Many people violate this provision
of the law because the home use license is much less than a public
performance license.

For more you will have to read my next blog article.

I wrote too fast. Chapter 1 paragraph 108 does give permission under
some circumstances to libraries to copy complete works or transfer
from another media. This is not permission to systematically copy an
entire collection.

On Wednesday I thought that I would take a break from writing blog
articles about communications and marketing, however on Thursday
morning at my local supermarket. This supermarket has a huge kosher
section -- two full aisles of grocery and frozen foods, a kosher
deli, kosher fish department, and a kosher bakery.I got new ideas
for a 12th article. I learned about appreciation at the re-opening

[ha-Safran]: RE: Volunteer Librarian

2010-09-19 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Dear Malka and Toby:

Thanks for your comments. I thought of asking Safranim to write
letters to the poster, but I decided that I didn't want to be the one
to ask. It is our job to advocate for libraries. The poster of the
ad knew that their organization needed librarian help; they just
didn't want to pay for it.

We should limit what is send to HaSafran. We don't allow ads for
junk novels or pharmaceuticals. Why should be allow ads that are
against everything we advocate?

In my blog article, I state that I am not against volunteering. All
of us volunteer for organizations that we are connected to. We get a
reward that is not monetary.

[ha-Safran]: News from our local chapter

2010-07-13 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Shalom Safranim,

On Sunday the Judaica Library Network of Metropolitan Chicago (JLN)
met for our annual summer planning session. We decided that we want
to make an increased effort to communicate and create positive public
relations. Since I am in charge of public relations I have revised
our web site.

I also created some library promotion posters. JPG files are on the
Facebook page. I will offer the full files suitable for reproduction
after I receive some more feed back. The posters and links to our web
site are visible on our Facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=117481051610293ref=ts

Our newsletter is currently being suspended for lack of writers. We
would like to know what other chapters are doing about
newsletters. Please communicate with me if you are the editor.

I am creating podcasts on library topics. I will be recording one
later this week and will tell you the URL when it is complete.

Shalom,

Donnie

[ha-Safran]: JLN Facebook page

2010-05-04 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Last week the Judaica Library Network of Metropolitan Chicago (JLNMC)
started a Facebook page. While it is mainly a publicity outlet for
our local chapter, we decided at our last meeting that the page will
be open to anyone. The page is to be used only for publicity and
information. We invite you to view our page and become a group member.

Please confine all remarks to favorable public relations type
remarks. Professional commentary, questions, asking for help, or
kvetching do not belong here. Remember all remarks are indexed by
Google and other search engines.

Please share any honors or special things that you or your library
has done. Share any news about presentations you have made outside
of your normal librarian activities. Encourage the staff and members
of your congregation, school, etc to join. Share news about displays
and any activity that you or the library has done that shows us in a
favorable light.

If you have any doubts if the material is appropriate please ask me
before posting.

[ha-Safran]: Yom Hazikaron and Library collections

2010-04-13 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Shavua tov

Today at Seudah Shlishit at shul we had a Holocaust survivor speaker
talk about at a visit to a school in Toronto. After his talk the
principal took him on a tour of the school. He asked to visit the
library. He asked the principal about the collection. What if a
student, parent or teacher wanted to follow up on his talk? How many
books does the library has Holocaust for children? How many books
does the library have for teachers? The principal didn't
know. After checking the principal was embarrassed to find they had
very few books for teachers and none for the children.

The lesson is we may hear someone give a speech, but we also need to
have the books and other library materials for follow-up.

[ha-Safran]: mp3 CDs

2010-03-09 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Does this mean that my patrons will not be able to listen to this
audiobook in their cars (which is where most of my patrons like to
listen to audiobooks)?

Many car cd players can play MP3 files from MP3 players or from CD
disks. One can buy portable CD players that play MP3 files, but they
are harder to find than those that don't.

[ha-Safran]: Materials from Rabbi Abraham Simon

2010-02-01 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Sholom:

Last week I visited a collection of books from Rabbi Abraham
Simon, He graduated Jewish Theological Seminary in 1932. His
ordination certificate was on the wall with signatures of all the
faculty members including Cyrus Adler, Mordecai Kaplan, Israel
Davidson, Boaz Cohen, and Louis Ginzberg. I was curious, but I did
not take the document.

Simon's daughter gave me some of the books that she wanted to get rid
of. Most of the books were pretty ordinary, but some had interesting
dedications. Mordecai M. Kaplan, the founder of both the Young Israel
movement and Reconstructionist movement wrote Judaism as a
Civilizationin 1934. This was the basis for all his later
philosophical works. Kaplan wrote a dedication in a first edition of
this book to the rabbi. The rabbi had been one of his students. Other
books with Kaplan's dedication are listed by dealers with prices
ranging from $250-695.

The collection also includes a copy of Esther and Harbonah, by H.
Pereira Mendes (1852-1937) Mendes was the rabbi of Shearith Israel
as well being active at Jewish Theological Seminary and the OU. The
book has a whole page inscription written to Jacob Schiff
(1847-1920). Schiff was a wealthy financier and philanthropist. His
firm Kuhn, Loeb was one of the two most powerful banking houses in
the United States. He gave generous support to Jewish Theological
Seminary, Yeshiva University, Barnard College, Jewish Publication
Society and many others. He competed with his brother-in-law who
endowed the Loeb Classics at Harvard University. Schiff supported the
Jewish Publication Society's Jewish Classics series.

If you are interested in these items or know someone who might be,
please contact me.

My list of books for sale has been updated to include these and about
800 others. Find them
at:http://home.earthlink.net/~byls-press/BYLS_Book_sale1.htm. Most of
the books are also listed on Amazon.com. The list includes subject
headings and all the author names are listed as they appear in
library catalogs.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Encyclopedia Britannica 2004 Deluxe Edition value

2010-01-31 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Does anyone know the current value of this set which includes all
updates from 1993-2007 and both Macro and Micro editions? If not the
value, can anyone suggest a website I can search that might have this
 information?

Generally to find the value of items, one searches web sites that
list used books such as amazon.com and abebooks.com. These sites
list what a vendor is asking for the items.

However, that is not the job of the library receiving a gift. The
receiving library or organization should not put any monetary value on a gift.

[ha-Safran]: Jewish heading changes LCSH changes (10-7-09)

2009-10-19 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
This list is edited from the message that Bryan Baldus
bryan.bal...@quality-books.com posted on AUTOCAT. I formatted the
columns with tabs, however, the listserv may make the spacing
different from what I intended. If you see a = at the end of a
line the listserv or your mail client has truncated the line I
intended and put the rest on a new line.

The old headings and tags are on the left with the replacement on the
right. The old headings are inverted headings. The new ones are direct.

It is always advisable to verify new headings in authority files
before using in new catalog records.

[ha-Safran]: Librarian's Lobby for September 2009

2009-09-23 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
After taking off from writing the column for the summer here is the
first column for 5770.

Last August someone asked me why a writer used a particular system of
Romanizing Hebrew. I gave a quick answer then, but the topic deserved
greater study. The challenge of transcribing sounds or
transliterating words from one script to another is an ancient
challenge. The Romans when they entered ancient Israel were the first
to have a need to write Hebrew words in Latin characters. No
orthography fits the oral language precisely.

This month's column, Transliteration of Hebrew, may be downloaded
from: http://home.earthlink.net/~ddstuhlman/crc107.pdf It is in PDF
format to accommodate the Hebrew and illustrations.

I wish everyone shannah tovah umitukah. May this year be one of
peace, respect for one another, prosperity for all, and good health.
May your family and friends be a source of strength and support to
enable us all to make this a better place to live.

What do you mean most of its collection? What should be removed is
the idea that a library can exist without a sufficient
collection. Many times readers need books that are old. The
collection should reflect the needs of today and the foreseeable
future. What is the mission of your library? This is question you
must ask of your people, not some librarian sitting in another city.

You should get rid of materials that no longer fit your mission.

RE: [ha-Safran] Evaluating old books

2009-05-28 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
After reading several responses I have some additional thoughts on
the value of books.

The value of a book depends on the type of person doing the evaluation.

1. To the insurance company the value is the cost of replacement.
2. To the acquisitions librarian the value is the total cost to
purchase or acquire the item.
3. To book seller the value is the difference between the cost to
purchase and sales price.
4. To the publisher the value is the cost to edit, print, market, and
distribute the book. What is left is profit.
5. To the student or casual reader the value is in the information or
entertainment value. That value has no money attachment.
6. To the person with too many books and too little space the value
of the space is greater than the value of the book or its information.
7. To the on line reader the value is in the information as the
physical book has not value.
8. To the recyler the value is the weight of the paper.
9. To the scholar the book may contain valuable information or may be
of no value in the search for answers.
10. To the owner of the building the cost to store the book may be as
important as the physical item.

If one is talking about money, the value is what a person is willing
pay. It one is talking about information, the value depends on the
reader. The information may be useless, invaluable, or somewhere in between.

If you can get online access to the catalog of a major Judaica library (JTS,
Yeshiva University, Baltimore Hebrew University, not to mention the
collections of the secular universities) you can check an author or title
list of the books against that library's holdings, which would give you a
rough idea of the titles' value. Or you could check the books against one of
the AJL's lists of recommended holdings for synagogue libraries. Or you
could send an author/title list to a friendly Judaica librarian or rabbi,
teacher or other maven, for evaluation. A fee for such service would be
small compared to importing someone. You mention your synagogue library,
but not librarian. Do you have one?

+
Excuse me for being a little blunt. Your advice will not
help. First, the library catalogs or OPACs do not list values of
books. If a price is in the MARC record it is a bibliographic price,
not a current value.
The real experts this person should be consulting are book
dealers. The way to consult a book dealer for free is to check
prices online from Amazon.com, Abebooks.com or similar venues for
used books. For the items with extreme value, find out from auction
catalogs what similar items have sold for. Value lies in what people
are willing to pay for an item, not in what a non-vendor says about
them or an appearance in a recommended list.

RE: Librarian's Lobby for April 2009

2009-04-19 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Hi, Donnie,

Thanks for your latest Librarian's Lobby. You did not explain how
you actually reached the passage.
Does the database have full text searching capabilities?

I received the above question about how I found the Hebrew quote from
Pesikta Zutrasa on the Hebrewbooks.org web site. The web site does
not offer a good search engine for searching text and the texts do
not show up when using google.books. Since I knew the section of the
quote was Shemos 13, I loaded pages until I found the right one, then
I read the page until I found the words. Pages have to be loaded
individually. The whole book may be download, but I did not try to
download it and test the _find_ command for a PDF file. This was
tedious, but there were no alternatives. If I had the book in hand,
the search process would have been the same, but I could turn and
scan the pages faster.

If this makes no sense then refer to the full article which you may
read at the URL: http://home.earthlink.net/~ddstuhlman/crc104.pdf

Readers’ advisory section in search of outstanding Jewish literature

CHICAGOThe Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES)
seeks recently published works of Jewish literature for adults as
candidates for the 2009 Sophie Brody Medal.

Endowed by the Brodart Foundation and Arthur Brody, the award
consists of a citation and a medal, and pays tribute to Arthur’s wife
Sophie, a recognized leader and philanthropist in the Jewish community.

The award enables readers’ advisory experts to recommend works of
literary merit, as well as highlighting writing that promotes a
comprehensive understanding of Judaism. Writers are chosen who
explore Jewish characters, settings, themes or philosophies, expands
the reader’s perspective about the Jewish experience or educate the
reader about Jewish history, culture and identity. Past winners have
achieved these goals by treating such topics as genocide, the search
for family members lost during the Holocaust and the stereotypical
Jewish mother.

The winner and up to three selected honor books will be announced at
an awards ceremony at the ALA’s 2009 Midwinter Meeting in Denver,
Colo. Their authors will be invited to speak to a large audience of
librarians at the 2009 Literary Tastes Breakfast, a ticketed event to
be held Sunday, July 12, 2009 in Chicago as a part of the ALA Annual
Conference.

Works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry published between Dec. 1,
2007 and Nov. 30, 2008 are eligible for consideration for the 2009
award. Those interested in submitting publications for consideration
should review the complete award criteria and contact Barbara Bibel,
chairperson for the award committee, at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
for instructions.

Librarians and readers can find all previous winners and honor books
listed in the Awards section of the RUSA website.

The Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) is a part
of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), a division of
the American Library Association
(http://www.ala.org/http://www.ala.org/). CODES represents the
interests of its members who work in collection development,
evaluation, and readers’ advisory services, and provides ongoing
networking and professional development opportunities for this group.
RUSA is the foremost organization of reference and information
professionals who make the connections between people and the
information sources, services, and collection materials they need.

There is no one size fits all answers. There is no perfect

Re: [ha-Safran]: MLS/MLIS online experiences?

2008-09-03 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Hello all, I am looking at getting my 'MLS'. My institution has a
relationship with an area MLS program, but my hours are inhibitive
(evening position, etc); I'm considering distance learning (first
timer..). I'm shomer shabbat, and all programs I have seen - though
they may claim to be 100% online - require intense weekend
orientation sessions, many of them more than once a year. Is there
anyone who has been in a similar situation who has found a program
amenable to their needs? thanks! noah paulovic

You are really asking many questions. I'll try to answer some here
on HaSafran and if you want, contact me directly. I have taught in
several on line programs. All the school have policies to
accommodate religious observances. The school vary in their ability
to make accommodations. As a faculty member I had no problems even
though the schools had an extra cost. One school ran a training
session on a Thursday for the shomer Shabbat people instead of a
session on Shabbat. One school paid for an extra hotel day. For
students it is not that easy. Many schools have Saturday classes.

Most MLS students do not attend school full time. Few start graduate
school immediately after undergraduate school. Some are training for
second careers. In order to attract students, schools teach night
courses, weekend courses, and on line courses or some combination of the three.

Programs vary from well run schools with expert professors and
adjuncts to schools that are struggling with few full time faculty
and out-date course materials. Now I teach at Rutgers, which is the
best place of all the schools I have worked for. They have shomer
Shabbat students and faculty. I am not the only Shomer Shabbat
faculty member. Since they are a large university and have doctoral
students, they offer lots of opportunities for learning. You would
have to check if their program is for you.

At first I was skeptical of distance education. I asked a student
who completed a program at University of Illinois about his
experiences. After that conversation I was convinced it could
work. There are pluses and minuses. I can't look at a student's
eyes and see if they understand or not. But I don't have to drive to
campus. The work load is very heavy. Expect to spend 10 hours per
week on each 3 credit course. During the concentrated summer session
expect to spend 20 or more hours per week for a course.

If you live in California consider San Jose State University, but it
may be harder for shomer Shabbat person than Rutgers. At San Jose I
once taught a course in Judaica bibliography. They have a faculty
member who was a Judaica reference librarian.

If you want I'll share the URL for the class web site of some previous courses.

I hope this helps, if not ask more questions.

Good luck.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Chanting of Torah in Aramiac

2008-06-11 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
I am curious to know if anyone knows of sound recording, CD or tape of the
chanting Torah in Aramaic.

Here is a Youtube video:

Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic Chanting of Torah
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4PE1YndJG2g

Yemenite tradition of chanting the Taj (Yemenite Torah) in Hebrew,
Aramaic and Arabic. Until recently, some Yemenite Jewish communities
in Israel dropped the Arabic and some still retain it as an integral
part of Jewish tafsir.

[ha-Safran]: List policies [was The Hasafran mailing list]

2008-05-30 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
I do get annoyed with some of the ads. A few of the vendors don't
even use the rules of good English and visual appeal. Even in an all

vendor to deliver the goods when they can't even write a clear advertisement?

Re: [ha-Safran]: Donations

2008-03-24 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Donations are always a mixed blessing.

First make sure that you have a written collection development policy.

Second be ready to hand a copy of the policy to all potential donors.

Third make sure that all donors understand that the librarian may
keep the books, sell them or dispose of them based on the needs of
the library. There is no appeal to this decision. If someone asks why
a book was not added simply say that the book did not fall within our
collection development policy.

If you need help with this policy, search the HaSafran archives as
several people have shared their policies.

[ha-Safran: Librarian's Lobby for March 2008

2008-03-05 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Shalom,

The March issue of the Librarian's Lobby is titled: Community
Resources, the Library and the Agunah Problem. It addresses
situations that require knowledge beyond books.

http://home.earthlink.net/~ddstuhlman/crc97.htm

Previous issues are still available.

January's column is on search strategy using keywords. The example
is a search for information about Jews in small American towns.

http://home.earthlink.net/~ddstuhlman/crc96.htm

February's column is on resources for fuzzy logic searches. It also
reviews Library of Congress' American Memory project.
http://home.earthlink.net/~ddstuhlman/crc95.pdf

As always I am open to new ideas and topics for future columns.

It even has recommended cataloging so that you can put it into you

The book is still in the preliminary stages. It has not been

We have interesting questions every week. None
of which I would classify as bizarre. Many times
the question the person asks is not the one they
need to ask for what they need to know.

Here are some recent ones:

Question: Where is the section on child
development? Answer: BF 721, but what the person
really wanted to know was how did early childhood
experiences cause someone to become a dictator.

Question: [I am sitting at my desk with a name
plate and ID badge around my neck] Do you work here?
[I guess typing at the computer is not working.]

imds.com and the New York Times review of the movie both call _Mr.
Saturday Night_ a comedy. Comedy vs. tragedy is not something
librarians or book reviewers have ever warned people about. It would
be too hard to determine who is sensitive to the issues raised by the
movie. Like most well written comedy, _Mr. Saturday Night,_ appeals
to a large and varied audience. Some will laugh and some won't. If
you cover your face and laugh a passer-by will not be able to tell if
you are laughing or crying.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Planning a new library

2007-09-11 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
There are lots of things to consider, but some frequently over looked
items are: make to have a work room with running water. There are
many times that you need to wash you hands or something else and you
don't want to run to the washroom. Plan for plenty of electrical and
computer connections and then plan for ample expansion. Twenty years
ago no one thought we would have banks of computers for library
users. Think about the flow of people and information in your new
library. Plan for security of materials, people, and data.

Think of what message you want the space to give the visitor or staff
member. Have child sized furniture in part of the library. Have hard
chairs and soft chairs.

Perhaps we as an organization need to redirect our focus
at conventions from cultural pursuits to addressing these problems
that threaten our profession and our ability to teach people about
their religion and heritage. A good first step would be to make a
public statement published in major Jewish media outlets to express
our concern and offer to educate. Let's use this opportunity to
promote, educate, and preserve our profession and the collections
that we handle.

Some of the activities that I have staged in the past have consisted
of two agendas. One in my mind and one that I tell everyone. Events
are attempts to keep the library in the mind of the public. I want
to show the public that the library is more than a place for books
and magazines. In my idea of Library 2.0 libraries cease being
static. Librarians and libraries go to their public. Librarians
visit classrooms and libraries reach out with web sites, electronic
resources, lectures, concerts, and displays. One time I even
staged an event just to get press coverage. Last semester in the
college library we had Coffee on Thursdays. We had lectures and
displays connected to a place and tied it to the globalization push
of the college. Once time we had more people attend than the room could hold.

Think about reaching out. Think about messages that can hit home
24/7. One motto for this year is: Assume nothing!

BTW I am working on the newsletter for our Chicago chapter. I would
appreciate any articles or ideas for articles about Jewish libraries,
books or Jewish learning that you think are useful to our members and
librarians in general. We do not publish book or media reviews since
the AJL Newsletter does such a good job of that. I will be writing an
article on marketing ideas for libraries. I consider this a peer
reviewed journal since at least two librarians read every article
before publication.

[ha-Safran]: Formerly Library Closings-- Library publicity

2007-08-17 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
This past summer I taught a course in library marketing and public
relations. I am thinking of turning the lectures into articles or
even a book. One of the major points I make is that marketing is
essential. There is always competition for funding. No library is
without a struggle for funds. In a city, synagogue, school or
university all departments need money. We have to promote
ourselves and that is hard. For almost 10 years I have been writing
a column largely aimed at the general public to show the expertise of
librarians. Some people still don't get the message.

[ha-Safran]: Re: Milken Archives

2007-08-12 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Hmm--- I just got the Milken Archive collection to catalog. I found
great cataloging inconsistencies between Library of Congress,
Spertus, Brandeis and JTS. All of the records seem to have
problems. One problem is with the publisher. Who is the
publisher? And where is the publisher located? Is the publisher
Nakos in Hong Kong, Milken Archive in Santa Monica, or both? Is the
series American Classics, Milken Archive of American Jewish Music or
both? Titles vary. Titles on the spine are not the same as on the
cover or disk.

[ha-Safran]: Librarian's Lobby for August 2007

2007-07-27 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Hello colleagues,

It's been a long time since my last Librarian's Lobby. The subject
is my visit to the National Yiddish Book Center. Only a librarian
could get excited when seeing Yiddish Linotype machine.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Cataloging a private Hebrew library

2007-07-15 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
Are you looking for a data base program or a library management
system? Are you trying to give full cataloging or just make a title
list? What is the purpose of your project?

Re: [ha-Safran]: Need address or email of MP PRESS

2007-05-01 Thread Daniel Stuhlman
It seems this company is no longer in business. I checked Hoover's
and other business data bases after Google turned up nothing.

The most recent book published by MP seems to be from the early
1980's. I have no way of checking old addresses in the library I am
sitting now.
