RE: [ha-Safran]: Disposition of Discards, Unsolicited Donations

2011-10-19 Thread Deborah Stern
Hi Robin. This situation also occurs in larger academic libraries, like
ours. We do have an ongoing book sale for our students and faculty with
such materials. You might consider just keeping a table or cart of books
available to the congregation, asking them for a small donation or
telling them to help themselves. I also have developed a list of places
that I know will accept donations or might even purchase books from us.
I'm attaching it so that you can get some ideas from it.

Please send me a summary of the responses you get. I'd like to post it
on the AJL Wiki, http://ajlwiki.pbworks.com/w/page/1636998/FrontPage,
so that when it comes up again there will be answers ready. Thanks.

Hi Angela. I recommend that you take a look at this section of the AJL
Wiki about automation for synagogue and center libraries:
http://ajlwiki.pbworks.com/w/page/1636978/Automation%20for%20Synagogue%2

The Wiki also covers many other topics that may be of use to you.
Additionally, a free online site that I've used with personal
collections that finds records for books very easily is LibraryThing at
www.librarything.com

Good luck with this exciting project!

[ha-Safran]: Looking for poem on Leah and Rachel

2011-03-01 Thread Deborah Stern
Colleagues, I'm hoping that the description below will sound familiar
to one of you out there. A patron is looking for a short poem for
which he doesn't know the name of the author or the exact title, but
it's about how Mother Leah stands at the grave of her sister, Rachel,
who has died giving birth to Benjamin, and vows to raise this child
for her sister. The patron thought it appeared in The
Reconstructionist many years ago but our search of the ATLA database
which indexes it and a brief manual search didn't come up with it. Any ideas?

extensively and beautifully illustrated and gives lots of background
information on the foods it describes, with emphasis on Eastern European
dishes. I was fascinated and became very nostalgic, hungry, and
motivated to cook as I read through the recipes from cover to cover.

2010-09-19 Thread Deborah Stern
Hi Robin. Take a look at the AJL Wiki page Policies for Jewish School
Libraries at:
  http://ajlwiki.pbworks.com/Policies-for-Jewish-School-Libraries.
There's a sample policy on it dealing with donations.

I encourage other AJL members to add their materials to our Wiki so we
can build up a central address for best practices in Judaica
librarianship.

[ha-Safran]: Weine or Elazar for Small Reform Synagogue

2010-07-21 Thread Deborah Stern
I've already replied personally to Michelle Sandler about this, but
wanted to remind everyone of the usefulness of the AJL Wiki for these
kinds of questions. There's a wonderful page with concise information
and very helpful links about cataloging for synagogues and centers at
http://ajlwiki.pbworks.com/Cataloging-for-Synagogue-and-Center-Libraries
that answers many questions about this topic. The Wiki has lots more
useful information. Link to it directly from the AJL home page.

If you have great information to add to add to the Wiki, just use the
Edit tab on the top of any page to submit permission to do so. Diane
Romm and Joyce Levine are our wonderful chairs of this project.

It was wonderful seeing so many of you at convention in Seattle and I
add my thanks to the very hard-working convention committee that made
it such a success! Looking forward to working with all of you over
the next two years as your VP for Publications.

[ha-Safran]: Seeing a List of Past Book Reviews

2010-04-21 Thread Deborah Stern
Steve Bergson mentioned The Book Review Index to the AJL Bulletin and
Newsletter 1978-1990by Judy Carsh. AJL also published the AJL
Newsletter Book Review Index 1991-1995 by Marion Stein. Both of these
are out-of-print. While we await an updated and expanded index to the
Newsletter reviews, is there interest in having these resources
reprinted by AJL and available for sale? Please reply to me directly
and if there is enough interest I will look into the mechanics. The
stock of AJL publications doesn't include copies of these titles, so
if anyone has a copy and is willing to send one to me, let me know

[ha-Safran]: Index to AJL Newsletter Book Reviews

2010-02-24 Thread Deborah Stern
Bernice Lieberman asked: Is there an on-line or print index to
reviews from the AJL newsletter?

Here is the answer:

1) One of our colleagues is working on this and we hope it will
be ready soon.

2) In the meantime, you can access back issues of the Newsletter
since the end of Dec 2007 on the AJL website at:
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/publications/newsletter.htm.
They are in pdf format and can be searched.

3) If you subscribe to the Index to Jewish Periodicals on CD or
online through Ebsco, it indexes the Newsletter, although it's now full-text.

We have decided to enable wider access to recent back issues of the
AJL Newsletter as searchable pdf files on the AJL website. Issues
from Nov/Dec 2007 through Nov/Dec 2008 are posted and the plan is to
post one additional file every time a new print issue is available.
The online files will not be restricted to members only, but the two
most recent issues will continue to be available in print only and
will be mailed to all AJL members. Thanks to Nancy Sack for
facilitating this. To access the issues online on the AJL website,
click on Publications and then AJL Newsletter. We hope this will
benefit publishers, authors, and anyone interested in Jewish
literature in accessing expert reviews by our members about books and

[ha-Safran]: Information about Susan Berman

2008-07-13 Thread Deborah Stern
I just wanted to let everyone know that our colleague Susan Berman
from Baltimore couldn't attend the AJL Convention because she was in
a traffic accident. Fortunately she is recuperating. However, she
also experienced the loss of her mother, Ruth Vengel, last week. You
can reach Susan at her home address: 2001 Burdock Road, Baltimore, MD 21209.
Susan has been doing a terrific job as chair of the AJL Bibliography
Bank. I'm sure I speak for many of you when I wish her a refuah
sheleima and offer her condolences on the loss of her mother.

[ha-Safran]: Looking for Books published in Israel

2008-04-30 Thread Deborah Stern
Can anybody reading ha-Safran help us with these 2 items:
1) We would like to obtain this book, published in Israel: Sefer
Zikhron Shemuel : ha-ziknah bi-mekorot Yisrael : leket mekorot
ve-`iyunim mi-tokh ha-Tanakh, ha-Shas, ha-Midrash, ha-Rambam
ve-sifrut ha-Sh. u-t. : be-tseruf hebet sotsyologi u-bibliyografyah.
Sifre Yahadut ha-Torah, 1989.
We would accept a used copy in good condition if a new one is not available.
2) I'm trying to identify this item: a new set of Jerusalem Talmud
that is probably being released one section at a time. It uses the
Leiden manuscript as its base and then gives all the parallel text
from the Babylonian talmud, Tosefta, etc. It may be from a yeshiva
named Maale Adumim. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Thanks in advance.

We have three card catalog units available free of charge, though you
would need to pay to have them transported. Two are beautiful dark
wood and measure 60 high by 39 long by 17 deep. One is a light
wood, sitting on an attached stand. It's 40 high by 31 long by 16

[ha-Safran]: Strategic Planner for AJL

2007-11-13 Thread Deborah Stern
I wholeheartedly agree with Abigail Yasgur when she says AJL, should
consider working with a strategic thinker/planner on

Jewish communal organizations, to develop a plan for positioning.

I have been suggesting that AJL engage a professional who will help
us produce a new strategic plan and retool our organization to meet
the realities of the 21st century, but have not met with much
encouragement for this idea from those I spoke with. What do others think?

[ha-Safran]: Bar Ilan Judaic Treasures CD

2007-09-04 Thread Deborah Stern
Has anyone used this CD? How does it compare to the full Bar Ilan
Responsa CD? It seems to contain fewer texts, but has an encyclopedia
of talmudic terms in Hebrew which the Responsa CD doesn't have. We
already have the Responsa CD, DBS Torah Library, Judaic Classics, and
Dimensions texts in DavkaWriter in our library. Are we missing

[ha-Safran]: PR Issues, Closing Libraries

2007-08-24 Thread Deborah Stern
I'm coming late to this discussion and have not read all of the
previous posts, so please excuse me if I'm repeating ideas already
presented or am speaking out of turn. But my general opinion is that
AJL should engage a professional to help us rethink our purpose,
organization, and activities - to create a new strategic plan for our
association. It may be that we are not putting our best efforts where
they are truly needed in this day and age, that we may need to engage
a professional to help us project our image and to lobby for
libraries. We all have great talent and many ideas, but are we using
them to the best advantage of our profession? Many non-profit
organizations engage in such strategic rethinking and I think it's
time for us to do so as well, to ensure the future of Judaica librarianship.

[ha-Safran]: Weine classification documents on the AJL website

2007-08-07 Thread Deborah Stern
I am pleased to announce that the Weine classification scheme
documents are now available for free download to AJL members only on
the AJL website. Weine is the classification and subject heading
scheme developed in the 1960's by our late colleague Mae Weine for
primarily small Judaic libraries, under 10,000 volumes. It is used by
many AJL members. The documents are in Word format so that
individuals may easily modify them to suit their own library's needs.

Non-AJL members and others wishing to purchase the print versions may
still do so using the AJL Publications order form, also available on
the AJL web site at:
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/publications/publications_order_form.pdfhttp://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/publications/publications_order_form.pdf

In addition to the documents you will find a link on the same page to
the Weine Users Discussion Group, hosted by Google. A Weine user's
group has also been organized for AJL members. Email Joan Gremont,
[EMAIL PROTECTED], for more information.

To find the web page listing the Weine documents, click on Resources
on the AJL home page, and then on Weine Documents and Users Group
(http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/resources/weine.htmhttp://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/resources/weine.htm).

[ha-Safran]: Indexing of titles in Index to Jewish

Good news! As a result of my inquiry about indexing of the AJL
Newsletter in the Index to Jewish Periodicals, Lenore Koppel replied
that: In the next issue of the Index, we will include a
cross-referencing pointer to link the two titles of the AJL
publication [Newsletter] (and any others that have a similar relationship).

I hope that, similarly, by letting Thompson-Gale know of our specific
concerns with the Encyclopaedia Judaica, we can be an effective voice
for change. This is one of the benefits and strengths of our being an
association of librarians. And despite its failings I, and the
students and faculty of my institution, are very happy that Thompson
Gale invested in and undertook this project. Reconstructionism got
almost no coverage in the first edition and now it's included and
updated, as are other important topics. It's also extremely helpful
for research that we now have the EJ in an online and electronically
searchable format. So I say let's not overlook the forest for the
trees, but rather continue to work effectively to make the new EJ even better.

[ha-Safran]: AJL Scholarship and Katchen Fund

2005-02-25 Thread Deborah Stern
Friends, I would like to remind you that the deadline to apply for both the
AJL Scholarship and the Rosalie Katchen Fund are fast approaching. All
materials need to be in my hands by April 1 so that the Scholarship
Committee can deliberate. Here is some brief information on these awards.
More extensive information and the applications can be found on the AJL
website: http://www.jewishlibraries.org. I will be happy to answer any
questions you may have about them. See my contact information at the bottom.

AJL Scholarship
In order to encourage students to train for, and enter, the field of
Judaica librarianship, the Association of Jewish Libraries awards a
scholarship of $500 to a student attending or planning to attend a graduate
school of library and information science. Prospective candidates should
have an interest in, and demonstrate a potential for, pursuing a career in
Judaica librarianship. This scholarship is open to individuals who are
currently working in Jewish libraries as well as those who are not.

Rosalie Katchen Memorial Award
In order to support catalogers and library school students seeking to
further their knowledge of Hebraica/Judaica cataloging and/or participate
in and contribute Hebraica records to national cooperative cataloging
programs, a monetary award is made to a qualified applicant. The amount of
money awarded varies from year to year, depending on resources available in
this fund. Applicants who wish to use the award to attend cataloging
sessions at the AJL Convention will be considered.

[ha-Safran]: AJL Conventions

2005-02-03 Thread Deborah Stern
Friends, as you can probably tell by now, the AJL Council, all of whom are
volunteers (there are no paid staff members of AJL) has long been, and
continues to be, very concerned with all the issues involved in putting on
our annual convention. One of the convention issues we discussed at the
last Council meeting led me to investigate how the Assoc of Jewish Studies
handles some aspects of its convention. One of the interesting things I
discovered by corresponding with their salaried administrator is that they
separate conference fees and meal fees. They do go to bigger cities and
hotels where they can offer kosher meals for those attendees who observe
dietary law or want to join others at meals. However, since not all of
their attendees wish to partake in any or all of the meals, and because
kosher hotel meals are very expensive, therefore they make the fees
separate. They try to make the main banquet less expensive so more people
will attend. In contrast, AJL philosophy emphasizes the informal networking
and bonding that takes place over shared meals and our convention
registration fee traditionally covers little more than the actual cost of
the meals. This is another area we may want to review, but again we need to
keep in mind that this issue, along with the others we've been discussing,
have been carefully and thoughtfully considered by volunteer AJL officers
and council members for many years.

[ha-Safran]: News from the AJL Scholarship Committee

2003-07-02 Thread Deborah Stern
1. Donations
The following donations to the AJL Scholarship were received in June:
In memory of Bernard Berger, father of Shulamit, from Liza Stabler
In appreciation, from Rita Frischer
In honor of the Toronto Convention Committee, from the AJL Board

2. AJL Scholarships
Thanks to the generosity of all of you who made donations to the
Scholarship Fund this past year, AJL was able to award two scholarships
this year to assist promising Judaica librarians continue their library
studies. The winners are: Rivka Schiller, who got her B.A. at the
University of Chicago and is attending the Dominican University of River
Forest, IL for her MLS degree, and Laurie Adler, an undergraduate of
Yeshiva University who is attending St. Johns University in NY for her
MLS degree. Rivka has experience primarily in academic libraries and a
strong background in Yiddish. Laurie has taught in day schools and
adult education centers and is particularly interested in expanding
library services for people with disabilities and thus incorporating
them more fully into the Jewish community. We wish both of them great
success in their endeavor and hope to greet them soon as colleagues.

We had other very worthy applicants for the AJL Scholarship. With your
continued donations to this fund we hope to grant even more scholarships
in the years ahead!

3. Criteria Changed for AJL Scholarships
At the convention in Toronto the AJL Council voted to make changes in
the eligibility standards for receiving an AJL scholarship. Candidates
continue to need to strongly demonstrate the potential, ability, and
intention of pursuing careers in Judaica librarianship. However,
previously only students enrolled at ALA-accredited Library School
programs could apply. The criteria have been broadened to include
students in the graduate library degree programs at Hebrew University
Bar Ilan University and in accredited programs in the United Kingdom,
Australia, and New Zealand. Also previously only candidates who had
completed Jewish studies courses at an academic level could apply.
These criteria have also been broadened to include as well extensive
participation in less formal Jewish studies or extensive experience
working in Judaica libraries, or any combination of the three.

4. Rosalie Katchen Memorial Award
Unfortunately there were no applicants for this award this past year.
It is intended to assist a student or practicing librarian attend a
course or workshop in Hebraica or Judaica cataloging. Please help
spread the word about this scholarship, or consider applying yourself.

With wishes for peace and a restful summer,
