RE: [hlds] RE: [hlds_linux] FW: patch today - might be a problem

2005-02-17 Thread Alfred Reynolds
I can reproduce not being able to use the GUI version of HL2MP (the
console version does work). We will work on a fix to enable it again.
You can work around it right now by copying hl2mp\gameinfo.txt to
hl2mp\scripts\gameinfo.txt.

I cannot reproduce this problem. Run the hldsupdatetool with the
"-verify_all" command line flag, also try removing any custom
configurations you may have (such as plugins or your server.cfg). Also,
please watch your tone on this list.

The "mod" is Counter-Strike:Source.
The windows ds won't start up.

at the moment i am downloading a completely new version into a clean
directory so i can see if running a server with defaults on a totally
clean install will work.

the servers that wont start just flash and exit.

or is it that someone forgot we need to run the ds in dos console mode
or something like that

Re: [hlds] RE: [hlds_linux] FW: patch today - might be a problem

2005-02-17 Thread Mikee
Sorry, I am running HL2-TDM on two 16 person servers. I updated to the
latest weapons patch, and it appeared to be running ok, then after 3 crashes
(which I manually restarted), I tried to get another updatetool done which
hung as below. I eventually was able to get the update to go through with
repeated attempts, and all files are verified updated.
Now I have restarted them again. People are saying that they are skating
all over the maps, and their gun positions are shooting up at the ceiling
instead of at each other. Not sure what other problems there may be yet.
When I look at the logs at the time of crash, it ends abruptly. The one I
am looking at stopped at loading server_cvar: "mp_forcerespawn" "0" I can
look at others if you need.

the updater is missing files or the files that were missing have been
replaced in the updater file set.
as i run hlsupdate multiple times on an existing installation i see new
files downloading.
i guess we have to just keep running hlsupdate as many times as it takes
to get it to start.
not what i call a solution

[hlds] RE: [hlds_linux] Steam Update released

2005-02-17 Thread Alfred Reynolds
We just released a quick fix for Counter-Strike: Source servers, run the
hldsupdatetool to get it.

( the original release rolled clients and servers forward to 1.0.0.15
but wasn't a required update. Code in the server browser however
enforces the client and server run the same version (meaning new clients
couldn't connect to old servers) so we have just done a quick, single
file update to roll back to 1.0.0.14 as there is no need to force this
version change for Counter-Strike: Source servers. )

There is so much enthusiasm for this update, including the SDK release. I
just want to say thanks on behalf of the hundreds who have been talking
about it on my [K-9] Kibbles and Bits! 16 person server.
One other request to put in the hopper, it would be great if HL2-DM logged
the weapon type used for kills so we could build more interesting stats
recording.

Or, put a shortcut to your HLDS.exe (with the command line parameters) in
the "Startup" folder. This way it will start as an app. when the computer is
started.

To go one further, Use something like Serverdoc to monitor your server and
put the shortcut to it (again, with the proper command line switches) into
the Startup folder.

Example: "C:\Progra~1\Serverdoc\serverdoc.exe" C:\Progra~1\CSSVR\hlds.exe
-console -game cstrike -maxplayers 32 +map de_dust +port 27016

You Could Also use a Batch File. But it does not always work depending on
what cuase the server to Crash.

EX:
:10
echo off

echo starting server:
date /t
time/t
echo on

D:\czero\hlds.exe -game czero -console -port 27015 +ip xx.x.xxx.xx
+maxplayers 20 +map de_dust
GOTO 10

I think that is right if I am Wrong someone please correct me

RE: [hlds] HLDS as a Service

2005-02-17 Thread Megatron
Or, put a shortcut to your HLDS.exe (with the command line parameters) in
the "Startup" folder. This way it will start as an app. when the computer is
started.

To go one further, Use something like Serverdoc to monitor your server and
put the shortcut to it (again, with the proper command line switches) into
the Startup folder.

Example: "C:\Progra~1\Serverdoc\serverdoc.exe" C:\Progra~1\CSSVR\hlds.exe
-console -game cstrike -maxplayers 32 +map de_dust +port 27016

RE: [hlds] cheat

2005-02-17 Thread David Fencik
I am making a distinction between non-steam users and cheaters. Someone
using non-steam should of course not be able to play, as they have not
paid for the software. These people are also very likely to cheat, as
they have nothing to lose (getting a new steamid is very easy).

Those that download a "cheat" from a website somewhere are not guilty of
anything until they actually go to a VAC protected server and play.
This is why we should not attempt any punishment.

Disagree completely with your point. File erasing / altering so their
game
no longer works is NOT unethical and wrong. Think of all the companies
like
Adobe and Microsoft who have put out products which stop working (or a
portion of the product stops working) if they discover you are using an
illegal reg key.

Same difference. VAC2 will come out and hopefully solve a good portion
of
this anyway.

Providing a working cheat for a cheater is giving them what they asked

If it gets them VAC-banned...then that's their fault.

Re: [hlds] Re: Cheat

2005-02-17 Thread Whisper
Hackers:

1. Those that do it to be competitive for serveral reasons:

Poor connection, Poor Skill, Ego, CBF trying.

2. Those that do it to be disruptive

Don't know why people exist in this group, some people seriously have
far too much time on their hands.

3. Those that actually make their own hacks and want to test their
programming skill in a real world setting

Some people with far too much time on their hands, but at least you
can empathise as to the reasons why.

Group 1. is the most insidious, especially when they are doing it for
ego/lack of skill and are actually proficient at covering their tracks

Group 2. Is the most annoying from a server administrators point of
view as they generally draw the most attention to themselves and they
have the necessary tools to get back on a server quickly when an admin
steps in and STEAM_ID bans them or IP bans them

Group 3. Such a ridiculously small percentage of the player population
that if it wasn't for the fact they distribute their cheats, you could
easily ignore them. That is to say, if this was the only group of
people we had to worry about cheating on servers, then cheating would
be considered by most people as non-existent.

Yep I suspect you are right, but there will still be a hardcore crowd
out there that are programmers capable of understanding, if not writing,
cheats and hacks. Then there will be the crowd of "regular hackers"
that, like us lot on this list, receive regular updates or go and read
up on a variety of topical web sites. After that you've got the rest of
them.

Admittedly the first group is a very small percentage of the community.
The second is probably considerably larger, leaving the remainder pretty
much as opportunitist hackers/cheaters and those too dense to know any
better as probably the biggest group.

Its not the last group that you really want to stop. Well you do, but
they aren't the root of the problem. Its the regulars cheaters and
hackers-proper that are the one you need to put a stop to. This kind of
scheme would work well on the regular cheaters for a short time, because
they are the ones that would pick up and test out new cheats/hacks
without knowing what they are doing under the hood. Of course that
would only last until they get warned off by the hackers-proper and this
crowd wouldn't be taken in at all.

The trouble with the regular cheaters is that a little knowledge is a
dangerous thing. Once they get wind that they are being scammed thats
when the ddos attacks start. They don't need to be terribly intelligent.
They only need a little bit of knowledge.

~shrug~ every community has a hierarchy.

I think you are confusing hackers with script kiddies. I don't think
most of the people who cheat in halflife are very intelligent.

It'd only hit the silly 8 year old kids that don't know better.

The really hardcore hackers would probably take the "cheat" apart,
discover that its less than useless and put notices on every hack site
warning everyone off. They'd probably take the cheat apart and post the
warning within an hour of it becoming generally available and the site
that is hosting it would immediately come under ddos attack.

Its a nice idea, but not gonna work... :-\

I think that would be much less effective, as they'd just have to
restart steam to fix it.

Give them a real working cheat...one that gets them banned.

No virii, no pc crashing scripts - just a simple "cheat" which is easy

That would be taking it too far.

Think of police trying to combat prostitutionthey'll dress up and
act like one, so that would-be whore-getters will solicit them.
Punishment is dealt to the solicitors through the proper channels of the
law.

This is what we'd be doing...we don't need to worry about punishing
cheaters...we just want to make sure they are caught.

I disagree. It's only natural to want to listen to music.
True...people should probably be buying music...but that's OT.

It is natural to want to win, however, it is not natural to want to

Saint what server FPS are you getting? Im running win2k3 and found my server FPS
was at 64. Others people I talked to had the same problem and found leaving
windows media player open would jump up the FPS to 256(for me) and some got 512
server FPS. My server cpu's are at 2.4mhz and can run a 22 slot puplic and a
privet 11 slots server fine. We tried running a 32 person server but the lag
was just too much. Source is a magor resource hog! I can run about three 20
person servers but can't even run one server over 24 slots.
Saint your system sounds fine its just they way source servers are sadly coded.
Try a 28 person server maybe. Im going to try putting gentoo on another box
with the same resources.

Subject: RE: [hlds] cheat

Here's an ideaI just thought about how some artists had substantial
success with battling p2p filesharing of their music. They'd release
looped versions of their songs on all the popular p2p apps, and people
would download them...then realize it's not the complete song and try
again. If they failed a few times, then they'd just give up.

Well...why not just release some "fake" cheats that are detectable by
VAC? Make a cheats 'r us webpage somewhere, put up fresh cheats, and
say that they're "vac-tested".

Cheaters will go to the site, download the cheats, and then get
vac-banned.

Just an idea...

Dave
