[hlds] L4D steamid question

2008-11-07 Thread SakeFox
I noticed this and didn't see anything else on this so i thought i would
ask.

Was playing with some stuff for the L4D servers and notice that the
steamid's are different. instead of STEAM_0: there STEAM_1: . I havn't
noticed with games in the past but thought i would see if this is
something that is just for the demo or does the l4d servers user
different steamids?

I'm not sure if all Windows servers are having the same problem that
mine were, but they're not adding the master servers to their list. I
remedied it by adding the following lines to my server.cfg:

setmaster add 68.142.72.250:27011
setmaster add 72.165.61.189:27011

Once I put those two lines in there and executed the server.cfg, they
showed right back up on the server list again.

I watched my servers this morning, and as they jumped out of hibernation
FPS
went to 29.xx. Once back in hibernation they go down to 10FPS. This is
 normal.

Subject: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Updated Released

The Left 4 Dead Demo has been updated. Please run hldsupdatetool to
 receive
 it. The specific changes include:

 - Fixed several issues with matchmaking and password protected servers
 - Tuned matchmaking to provide better search results
 - Fixed bug where servers could stay reserved by matchmaking forever
 - Performance optimizations and fixes to networking layer
 - Fixed issue where game could cause Steam executable to use too much CPU
 - Fixed music resetting when changing video settings
 - Fixed some issues with not being able to chat and/or connect to other
 users

In addition to those, we've also added some early features to help enable
private servers. There are two ways to enable this:

Set a sv_search_key to a unique string on the server
Do the same on each client that will want to connect
Start a map on the server
Searches for games should be restricted to only finding servers with that
 search key

 Or

 Set sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0
 Set sv_password to a non-empty string
Start a map on the server
Tell the client the IP address of the server
Client uses console to connect ip just like the good old days
Should result in password prompt during connect to server

These features are still a work in progress.

 Jason

[hlds] Dedicated Servers Hosting Console Players?

2008-11-07 Thread Brad
I really haven't found any proof of this or anything (it really is hard to
get a firm grip on whether this is the case or not because the server files
include a whole bunch of client code), but does anyone know for sure if our
dedicated servers are being used to host Xbox 360 players? Obviously, there
is the line SupportsXbox360 1 in gameinfo.txt that leads one to this
conclusion. Even if this isn't the case, does anyone have any idea what
that file is talking about? It clearly is a file intended for PCs, but
there are console references in it. I feel like something fishy is going
on, but I hope I am wrong.

Re: [hlds] Dedicated Servers Hosting Console Players?

2008-11-07 Thread Thijs
Actually, It would be interesting to know if Microsoft allows the use of
custom netcode on the xbox. XBox Live is the standard for XBox games. In
case they don't, the PC games would have to run Games For Windows Live
netcode and run on the Live network, which is totally different from the
infrastructure Valve currently has laid out for their games.

I believe coding for xbox and coding for windows is very similar, which is

are doing this yet. It could possibly be that we are seeing dev's working
towards doing this, with both using very similar package (hence we see
 files
related to xbox on the PC version even though they are not used). We also
see the same xbox and controller config files in TF2 which is also on the
xbox. Those have been there for over a year now and there is no
 cross-compatability with servers there.

I'd say the answer at the moment would be no for the other reason that if
 it
was the case, Valve would be touting it and making a big thing about it
because they'd be the first. I think we're just seeing them either using
 the
same code for the two versions, or working towards making it possible in a
future game. I'm fairly confident in saying that when its possible, you
 will
know about it because it will be everywhere.

Maybe those server files are used to host a xbox server. But I don't think
it's a cross dedicated server. I really hope not, because a mouse beats the
controller on FPS games. I can find only 2 reasons why valve wanted to
 bring
left4dead to the xbox.. 1ste money aspect and 2nd pressure from EA. But
 that
is still my opinion, because I think the zombies are way too fast for a
controller (atleast for a casual gamer)... sorry about the xbox frustration

Re: [hlds] Good idea? {L4D}

2008-11-07 Thread Alec Sanger

I think we can all agree that some form of server browser is needed in game.
Right now, since we're limited to 4 slots, it's not a huge deal. When we get 8
- 14 slot servers, though, it will absolutely be a must. I think valve has
taken our feedback and we will see something like this when the full game is
released. Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2008 13:36:57 + From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To:

[hlds] L4D - windows server query issues

2008-11-07 Thread Saint K.
Hi,

There is an issue when you query windows based servers. It won't pass on the
map its running.

Check our server query at www.specialattack.net at the right side. The onces
showing full detail are Linux, the onces showing unknown maps are windows.

Here is a output:

Windows:
7:22:49 hostname: SpecialAttack.net :: L4D #1
 version : 1.0.0.0/36 3652 secure
 udp/ip : 85.17.60.96:27015
players : 2 humans, 0 bots (4 max) (not hibernating)

Linux:
17:24:27 hostname: SpecialAttack.net :: L4D #4
 version : 1.0.0.0/36 3652 secure
 udp/ip : 85.17.239.149:27035
 map : l4d_dem_hospital01_apartment
players : 2 humans, 0 bots (4 max) (not hibernating)

As you can see, the map info is missing on windows.

On another note, I am still not able to run more then 4 servers on my Linux
box.

Cheers,

p.s. Thanks a lot for the great response yesterday! In my opinion this has
been the best release from VALVe side ever since I play HL1.

[hlds] Server Browser and Matchmaking

2008-11-07 Thread Steven Barker

If I use the following cvars:
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0
sv_tags Server Browser Join Enabled
sv_unreserve

Does this mean that my server will no long be able to be joined via
matchmaking? Because when I input them into the server.cfg and restarted the
map I no longer got any parties of 3 or 4 joining, it would just be the odd 1
person joining at a time. I have no problem with my server appearing in
matchmaking I just want to be able to join it when I want and when my clan
members want.

Thanks

[hlds] L4D Win32 server problems (Steam library)

2008-11-07 Thread Jarno Veuger
Hi list,

I'm having an issue with the Left 4 Dead Demo Win32 dedicated server
files. When I start it, it changes to right map and that kind of things.
But it before the VAC ok message it displays: Unable to load Steam
library. (not the error with all those *** (stars) in it).

It worked fine yesterday and people were able to join through the lobby
but it seems the last update broke it. I'm running Windows 2003 (Server)
Enterprise and the server port is 22003 (not default).

Any help is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [hlds] Dedicated Servers Hosting Console Players?

2008-11-07 Thread Eric van Beesten
Maybe those server files are used to host a xbox server. But I don't think
it's a cross dedicated server. I really hope not, because a mouse beats the
controller on FPS games. I can find only 2 reasons why valve wanted to bring
left4dead to the xbox.. 1ste money aspect and 2nd pressure from EA. But that
is still my opinion, because I think the zombies are way too fast for a
controller (atleast for a casual gamer)... sorry about the xbox frustration
;)

 Here is a output:

 Windows:
 7:22:49 hostname: SpecialAttack.net :: L4D #1

 udp/ip : 85.17.60.96:27015

 udp/ip : 85.17.239.149:27035
 map : l4d_dem_hospital01_apartment
players : 2 humans, 0 bots (4 max) (not hibernating)

As you can see, the map info is missing on windows.

On another note, I am still not able to run more then 4 servers on my Linux

 Cheers,

p.s. Thanks a lot for the great response yesterday! In my opinion this has
been the best release from VALVe side ever since I play HL1.

These groups needs to be linked to the match making system. The owner of the

In linux, it's much more resource efficient to run the servers forked.
However, all of the servers will use the same config, which is a royal pita.

I'd love to see a +exec server##.cfg

Re: [hlds] Dedicated Servers Hosting Console Players?

2008-11-07 Thread Joshua Handelsman-Woolf
Because PPC is the same as what normal PCs use...

towards doing this, with both using very similar package (hence we see files
related to xbox on the PC version even though they are not used). We also
see the same xbox and controller config files in TF2 which is also on the
xbox. Those have been there for over a year now and there is no
 cross-compatability with servers there.

I'd say the answer at the moment would be no for the other reason that if it
was the case, Valve would be touting it and making a big thing about it

Maybe those server files are used to host a xbox server. But I don't think
it's a cross dedicated server. I really hope not, because a mouse beats the
controller on FPS games. I can find only 2 reasons why valve wanted to bring
left4dead to the xbox.. 1ste money aspect and 2nd pressure from EA. But that

Re: [hlds] Server Browser and Matchmaking

2008-11-07 Thread gameadmin
Sv_unreserve does _not_ stop people joining from the lobby
It's a one-time command that clears lobby reservations from your server.
Nothing to say the lobby won't re-reserve slots later on (not sure if it'll
do that immediately or if it does it at a later date)
For example, I've used it on my public servers before the last update, as
there was an issue where slots would be reserved but not cancelled. Running
that command cleared the reservations and more people joined immediately

Running the server with -nomaster (command-line command only) will stop the
server adding its details to the master list, or you can set the
sv_search_key cvar to something unique, as per Jason Ruymen's email

Re: [hlds] Good idea? {L4D}

2008-11-07 Thread Kitteny Berk
While we're suggesting things,

It'd be nice to have a simple lobby on console joined servers, just so
people can set the difficulty easily and start at the same time.

Philip Bembridge wrote:

A Lobby for clans/GSPs/groups of friends to link together servers which they

 join?

This would then make finding servers easier, Instead of finding individual
servers you can search for Lobbys OR servers in the serverbrowser

[hlds] Answers

2008-11-07 Thread Blood Letter

The main thing hurting this demo right now is the lack of stable dedicated
servers.

I'm sure everyone at Valve is extremely busy right now, but if they want to
make a good impression when the demo goes public (Gamestop accepting blank
submissions aside...), they need to communicate with server operators.

The lobby system is great for finding people to play with.
I wish the friends list showed them grouped together when they were in the same
lobby.
We need to see pings! A ping chart (4x4, or 8x8 for versus) would be nice as
well (when in a lobby).
These are minor details that can be addressed later

The lobby system is horrible for finding a server to play on.
If you know of a dedicated server that is stable, or have one that you run, you
should be able, as the lobby leader, to join your group to it, add your group
to a queue for that server, or give it and other servers you like favorable
treatment in the random selection process.
We also need to be able to confirm we want to join the selected server. No
joining a random server only to be killed by a password prompt. No scraping
the bottom of the ping barrel because it was the only server avilable. No
joining a random server that has friendly fire modded out (it's only a matter
of time) or other things modified without you knowing it.

This all needs to be in the standard UI with the standard server configs, not
hidden in a console command and requiring server variables to be modified (from
default). As it is, people are blindly struggling with server variables and
command lines. Is this variable behaving properly? Is it a bug? Is it a demo
restriction? Is it the intended behavior of the lobby/matchmaking system?

For the purposes of the demo, I'd like to see:
An official comment on how to manually join a server (either as an individual,
or once you're in a lobby).
An official comment on how to set your server up to allow or disallow (allow
should be default) manual joining and auto joining.
An official comment on how to password your server and prevent it from showing
up in the list or being randomly selected.

Each of the above has been figured out by people on this list, and I'll be
wading through tons of emails this weekend when I set up my server, I'm sure.
But this is what needs to be addressed officially now. Stable dedicated
servers aren't exactly easy to come by. It really hurts the demo, and it hurts
people's perception of the game (as server operators and as players).

On a side note - has any tried throwing party mode at this yet?

Hi,

The last server update email, by Jason Ruymen, has answers to your questions

The main thing hurting this demo right now is the lack of stable
 dedicated servers.

I'm sure everyone at Valve is extremely busy right now, but if they
want to make a good impression when the demo goes public (Gamestop
accepting blank submissions aside...), they need to communicate with
 server operators.

The lobby system is great for finding people to play with.
I wish the friends list showed them grouped together when they were in
 the same lobby.
We need to see pings! A ping chart (4x4, or 8x8 for versus) would be
nice as well (when in a lobby).
These are minor details that can be addressed later

The lobby system is horrible for finding a server to play on.
If you know of a dedicated server that is stable, or have one that you
run, you should be able, as the lobby leader, to join your group to it,
add your group to a queue for that server, or give it and other servers
you like favorable treatment in the random selection process.
We also need to be able to confirm we want to join the selected server.
No joining a random server only to be killed by a password prompt. No
scraping the bottom of the ping barrel because it was the only server
avilable. No joining a random server that has friendly fire modded out
(it's only a matter of time) or other things modified without you
 knowing it.

This all needs to be in the standard UI with the standard server
configs, not hidden in a console command and requiring server variables
to be modified (from default). As it is, people are blindly struggling
with server variables and command lines. Is this variable behaving
properly? Is it a bug? Is it a demo restriction? Is it the intended
 behavior of the lobby/matchmaking system?

For the purposes of the demo, I'd like to see:
An official comment on how to manually join a server (either as an
individual, or once you're in a lobby).
An official comment on how to set your server up to allow or disallow
(allow should be default) manual joining and auto joining.
An official comment on how to password your server and prevent it from
showing up in the list or being randomly selected.

Each of the above has been figured out by people on this list, and I'll
be wading through tons of emails this weekend when I set up my server,
I'm sure. But this is what needs to be addressed officially now.
Stable dedicated servers aren't exactly easy to come by. It really
hurts the demo, and it hurts people's perception of the game (as server
 operators and as players).

On a side note - has any tried throwing party mode at this yet?

Re: [hlds] Server Browser and Matchmaking

2008-11-07 Thread Karl Weckstrom
Boy it sure would be nice if Valve would do some decent things, like:

1. QA their releases before launching them out into the wild
2. Include sample server and startup configs
3. Not rely on the server-hosting community to do its QA work for them

We are all being used. I won't participate in this debacle any further. Thus
far, they're using us as guinea pigs. And I won't have it.

I'm pulling down this L4D hunk of absolute crap until Valve decides they should
do right by the people who are their bread and butter. I will suggest everyone
else do the same. Anything else will simply promote Valve's bad behavior.

... okay? you taking your servers down certainly won't do a whole lot... but
whatever floats your boat. I talked to Jason and it simply seems like they
couldn't make the deadline. They were working on it up until the very release.
Yes, they could have handled things a big differently, but at least many of the
errors were fixed within a few hours. At least they are communicating with us
on some level.

So you go right ahead and make a statement by taking down your l4d servers.

Re: [hlds] Answers

2008-11-07 Thread William Stillwell - KI4SWY

And for this reason I am running 3 Public Services (all full on startup), and 1
running no-master.
This is a DEMO.. i played the demo (i paid the $$ for the game)., we are
talking two levels? Lets worry about all the cool features when multiplayer is
enabled, and we can have larger then four play slot servers.
Lets get some dedicated servers up so people can play the demo!

Subject: [hlds] AnswersThe main thing hurting this demo right now is the lack
of stable dedicated servers.

Exactly, I won't promote bad behavior such as what you're suggesting.

Be thankful they are on the mailing list communicating with us. Be thankful
they are taking our suggestions and feedback and actually doing something
about it. Be thankful they responded with fixes QUICKLY yesterday. Very
few companies these days listen to what their customers have to say.

Sure you can argue custom tab... till your blue in the face, but guess
what? Eventually they did what we asked for.

Go right ahead, take your servers down, and while you're at it maybe you can
unsubscribe from the mailing list as well? After all I don't want to
promote any bad behavior.

You've made two things clear.

1) You want attention. You haven't received the attention you were looking for
as of yet so you have repeated your previous statement in hopes of getting your
message out there.

2) You're incredibly immature. You want to crying and stomping your feet like a

little tip. Nobody really gives a damn if you shut down your servers. Please
stop spamming our mailbox with your temper tantrums.

Umm,

Note** sv_search_key - lets you set up a server that can be found via
matchmaking, but only by people with a matching sv_search_key. This allows
you to set up a server you or your friends can play on and still use the
existing matchmaking lobby to set up avatars, difficulty, map, etc.

Where do my friends put this key into their end?

2008-11-07 Thread Dustin Peacock
Using the +servercfgfile works in Win32 as well, thank Flubber. This is for
anyone who wants to run multiple SRCDS' from the same installation except
with different server.cfg's. For example, my command line is +servercfgfile
server2.cfg. I did not replace -exec server.cfg which I doubt you want to,
but the server runs fine and it changes hostname etc.

Re: [hlds] Server Browser and Matchmaking

2008-11-07 Thread J T
At least this isn't BF2, which was plagued with everything imaginable. And
they didn't even have a mailing list like this that had employee's
responding to questions and comments. I just started subscribing to this
mailing list, and I have to say its actually helps server administrators and
vavle to communicate on some type of public level.

Personally, I don't think its all that bad Q/A it with the community. I mean
honestly its probably for the best anyways, cause there are so many
different server configurations out there.

On Fri, Nov 7, 2008 at 11:05 AM, Karl Weckstrom [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Boy it sure would be nice if Valve would do some decent things, like:

 1. QA their releases before launching them out into the wild
 2. Include sample server and startup configs
 3. Not rely on the server-hosting community to do its QA work for them

We are all being used. I won't participate in this debacle any further.
Thus far, they're using us as guinea pigs. And I won't have it.

I'm pulling down this L4D hunk of absolute crap until Valve decides they
should do right by the people who are their bread and butter. I will suggest
everyone else do the same. Anything else will simply promote Valve's bad
 behavior.

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead dedicated servers

2008-11-07 Thread Kevin Ottalini
I've been testing a stand-alone L4D server (Win32) and run across something
odd.

This is a dedicated server I've installed and updated via the hldsupdatetool
(not the one in the Steam games/tools menu)

If I start the server after a clean boot (virtually nothing running other
then task manager) SRCDS will run but complain:

Unable to load Steam library

It won't say it has added any master server ips and players will never join.
Setmaster in the console show that no servers have been added.

If I start Steam up first however, then SRCDS runs as expected, I don't get
that error message, master servers are added and players join and play.

It looks to me like there are still some Steam-specific hooks left in the
stand-alone SRCDS install.

Would someone else confirm this? (previous posts here appear to be saying
the same thing).

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead dedicated servers

2008-11-07 Thread Arg!
I also get the 'unable to load steam library'

also, has anyone worked out a way to choose your player class when running a
private server and connecting via console?

On Sat, Nov 8, 2008 at 7:37 AM, Kevin Ottalini [EMAIL PROTECTED]wrote:

 I've been testing a stand-alone L4D server (Win32) and run across something
 odd.

This is a dedicated server I've installed and updated via the
 hldsupdatetool
(not the one in the Steam games/tools menu)

If I start the server after a clean boot (virtually nothing running other
then task manager) SRCDS will run but complain:

 Unable to load Steam library

It won't say it has added any master server ips and players will never
 join.

[hlds] Left 4 Dead dedicated servers - rate limits needed

2008-11-07 Thread Kevin Ottalini
Extensively testing of a dedicated L4D server has shown that it is not
possible to run an L4D server (with 4 players) lag-free on a 1.5M / 384K dsl
line (line is solid, nothing else using the line during testing).

Players are changing their rate to 4 and cl_updaterate to 100 and there
are no server limit CVARs to prevent these settings from overloading the
server uplink bandwidth.

The only rate limit setting available right now is sv_maxcmdrate which is
never a problem even when set to 100.

Valve, please re-enable the server rate limit settings for L4D.

This problem will only get much worse with 4 vs 4 and the end result is a
bad player experience.
