server.dll is there

Problem is the server doesn't even get to it though.

No, only the engine files are out. The TF2 mod binaries are not

The most significant fact here is that there have been interface changes
so it is probable that many server plug-ins that work with CSS, DoD, and
HL2MP will not work with the Orange Box engine. Once the beta is out the
door and the initial fires are put out I will make the specific
interface changes available on http://developer.valvesoftware.com so
that when the new SDK comes out the mod/plugin community can quickly
make Orange Box-compatible server plugins.

You will run the srcds.exe that is located in the 'orangebox' directory.
This is the one that links the binaries located at 'orangebox/bin'.

srcds.exe -game tf will work fine

Mike, could you please elaborate on how a TF2 server will be started?

Is it the same process of: srcds.exe -game tf

Or is there a new command line style? Which executable do we run, and
where
will it be located?

So if I get this right the srcds.exe and all the other bin files for TF2
will be located in the orangebox folder? And that the games in the
orangebox
folder will also be using the materials and models of the other games
outside the orangebox folder located in the root of the server
instalation?

My current TF2 instalation is like this:

root
-hl2
-orangebox
--tf

>From my understanding we are able to run a HL2DM/CSS/DODS server from
the
root/srcds.exe
and the TF2 server from the
root/orangebox/srcds.exe

One would argue that after 9 years, how's a little bit longer gonna hurt?

He is right, however -- this is meant for discussion about dedicated
servers. Valve will send out a message when they are available, and
complaining will not speed up the process.

In the mean time, I will be wasting away in front of Peggle Extreme. ;)

The forums are nearly always slow.

But, like many who have waited 9 years for tf2 it gets a bit much, when gone
8pm there is still no server for a game promised to be released on Monday.

from

the

Re: [hlds] Team Fortress 2 Content Available

2007-09-17 Thread [DumB]TeXas

You are NOT paying to play the beta, you are paying for a *pre-order* of
the games and the beta testing is an option for those of us who would
like to participate - it is basically a closed beta for the ones that
have bought the orange box. If you want to, you can of course wait till
the game is fully released and pick up a copy then, no one is forcing
you to pre-order and/or play the beta. Heck, there might be guest passes
available for TF2 at the point of release too, meaning you can get to
try the game if one of your friends are kind enough to give you a pass.
Either way, I can't really see why you should have any reason to moan.

Personally I am confident I will like the game, and I see no problems
what so ever in spending $45'ish for the orange box pre-order. If you
are not, simply don't! ;)

Divided on the totalt amount of hours you'll probably spend having a great
time with these games, it's a better investment then most.

I'd guess Valve will try selling as many Orange box'es as they can, before
splitting the games for separate sale. I know I would :-)

RE: [hlds] Team Fortress 2 Content Available

2007-09-16 Thread Mike Durand
Right now the only game that will use the Orange Box engine is TF2. For
now the other games will stay in their usual locations, but they will be
moved to the new engine in the coming weeks and at that point their
binaries will reside under the 'orangebox' directory.

Plugins that work for the current engine version probably won't work for
the new engine version but I will be sharing the new interfaces with the
mod community ASAP so that they can develop new ones. The interfaces are
different, but we have not eliminated functionality so rewriting the
plug-ins should not be a monuental task.

Hello Mike,

All Source Games change the Engine to the "orangebox" Engine???
So what is with plugins?
Is the Plugin interface different the Source Engine, so that all Plugins
have be rewritten or is all from Source working with the orangebox???

With friendly Reguards

Yes, the clients will be moved to the new engine as well when the server

RE: [hlds] Team Fortress 2 Content Available

2007-09-16 Thread Mike Durand
The issue here is the location of the game binaries in relation to the
/bin directory that contains the *correct* engine binaries. Previous to
this new directory structure the assumption was that only one version of
the engine could exist under a single installation. So the location of
the engine binaries for all games was /bin. If you installed TF at /tf
on a server that also hosts Counter-Strike Source at /cstrike then
cstrike would no longer run due to the fact that the /bin directory
would now have Orange Box engine binaries.

So the 'orangebox' directory acts as a new root directory that has its
own location for the new engine binaries and the new games that use
those binaries. Meanwhile any games installed in the parent directory
can still run against the old engine.

For those of you that don't have more than one game installed on your
dedicated server this isn't as valuable, but our goal was to make it
possible to support servers that host multiple Source games that utilize
multiple versions of the engine.

So we will all have to repoint any mappings to "orangebox" for CSS and
DoD:S and we will no longer be using srcds_l or something similar? Why
not just let us put everything in the directory name we so choose
(srcds_tf2 or just "tf2") ?

RE: [hlds] Team Fortress 2 Content Available

2007-09-16 Thread Mike Durand
The most significant fact here is that there have been interface changes
so it is probable that many server plug-ins that work with CSS, DoD, and
HL2MP will not work with the Orange Box engine. Once the beta is out the
door and the initial fires are put out I will make the specific
interface changes available on http://developer.valvesoftware.com so
that when the new SDK comes out the mod/plugin community can quickly
make Orange Box-compatible server plugins.

RE: [hlds] Team Fortress 2 Content Available

2007-09-16 Thread jlaws
So we will all have to repoint any mappings to "orangebox" for CSS and
DoD:S and we will no longer be using srcds_l or something similar? Why
not just let us put everything in the directory name we so choose
(srcds_tf2 or just "tf2") ?

All Source Games change the Engine to the "orangebox" Engine???
So what is with plugins?
Is the Plugin interface different the Source Engine, so that all Plugins
have be rewritten or is all from Source working with the orangebox???

With friendly Reguards

RE: [hlds] Team Fortress 2 Content Available

2007-09-16 Thread Mike Durand
Yes, the TF (Orange Box) engine is not compatible with the one that is
presently used for CSS, DoDS, and HL2MP. That is why we are segregating
it into the the 'orangebox' directory under the root. In the coming
months the other games will be moved to the Orange Box engine and their
binaries will move under the 'orangebox' directory once this move is
done. The content does not need to move to the 'orangebox' when the
binaries for the games move and we hope that this represents some value
for server admins since you will not need to download redundant content
files into two different directory structures in order to support two
different engine versions.

Our hope is that this new directory structure will help avoid
disruptions to existing dedicated servers for other mods and products
when we make significant changes to the Source engine like the ones
needed for TF and the other Orange Box games. We also hope that it makes
updating your servers more convenient and less bandwidth intensive as we
update our games for newer engine versions.

I hope this has made it more clear, but if not please let me know.

-Thanks,
 Mike

Same, very bizzare naming convention for the server itself:

C:\servers\tf2/orangebox\tf\expressions\player\scout\phonemes etc.

Odd having the directory slash the opposite direction as well although
it
looks correct when viewing directory structure thru the dos prompt.

Hi guys,

First off, in preparation for the upcoming dedicated server for Team
Fortress 2, we've updated the hldsupdatetool. Along with that, we've
made the content for Team Fortress 2 that you'll need for a dedicated
server available. To get that, run hldsupdatetool with the command
"-command update -game tf".

The dedicated server itself is not yet ready. We're working very hard
to make it available as soon as possible. The Linux build might be a
little later than the Win32 build, but hopefully not by much. So for
now, sync up the TF 2 content that's available to get your server ready
:)

Thanks,
Jason
