[Hornlist] horn with electronic instrument
I recently heard a fascinating piece for flute and computer on the new recording by the Pittsburgh Music Ensemble entitled "Against the Emptiness" Here is a description: Lizamander was written for Elizabeth McNutt. It is the second in a series of works for solo instruments and Max/MSP. The computer captures material played by the solo instrument during the performance and uses that material (as well as some pre-recorded sounds) to generate a syncopated rhythmic accompaniment. The computer tracks the pitch of the flute throughout, and uses this information to follow a preset list of cues, which trigger a variety of real-time processing techniques, including time stretching, pitch shifting, and contrapuntal harmonization. Composer:Russell Pinkston Is anyone aware of a similar type of piece for horn? I have heard plenty of pieces for horn and recorded electronic sounds (horn and tape for you old guys). I contacted the composer and he says that he has not written such a piece. This music seems to be more interactive which allows the performer to be more expressive by not having to keep up with a pre-recorded sound track. Re: [Hornlist] RE: Slide Grease and Valve Oil
Ken and listers, I agree with Hans on the dezinc. issue. Early Yamaha student instruments had a terrible problem with this, especiall the outer slide of the student trombones. I have noticed this with other off brand, cheap student trombones and trumpets. What is very important is to keep your leadpipe clean. I made a swab for mine so I clean it very often. My experience with putting oil in my horn is that it creates an emusion with the water vapor and makes it difficult to empty all of the water. The annoying gurgling becomes maddening. As Hans remarks, my recommendations may not suit every situation. All I know is that my valves work like lightning and they are clean as a whistle. No "red rot", green gunk, or other flotsam. Luke Zyla - Original Message - From: To: "The Horn List" Sent: Wednesday, March 04, 2009 9:02 AM Subject: Re: [Hornlist] RE: Slide Grease and Valve Oil Sorry, Ken, these "red rot" story is a bit different. It does occur on unlacquered instruments rarely, but it does occur a lot on lacquered instruments. Why ? Because many makers, even famous, do not remove the excess solder by hand (scratching it away; enormous extra costs because time consuming), but remove it in an acidic bath. This bath has to be neutralized most carefully, otherwise some particles of the acid may remain on the metal surface & be over lacquered. Then the process of zinc pest can begin. Ken´s recommendation of oiling the horns inside can be special supported for those players, who produce a very acidic saliva. I am fortunate, as I never had such kind of a problem. And finally: all the recommendation can be made only on an average, not for special situations, climate, etc. -Original Message- Date: Wed, 04 Mar 2009 13:31:24 +0100 Subject: [Hornlist] RE: Slide Grease and Valve Oil From: "Kenneth Pope" To: "h...@music. memphis. edu" Luke Zyla writes: "About oiling the valves. CORdially, Luke Zyla" Boy, Luke, I couldn't disagree with you more on your advice. To me, the oiling of your horn is less for the sake of providing lubrication on the thrust bearings, but more for PROTECTION from Red Rot. It is when the moisture comes in contact with the Zinc in the brass of your horn that the horn can become more susceptible to dezincification (red rot). A thin film of oil not only prevents this, but it also keeps your horn CLEAN. Of course, it's also a good idea to provide oil for all parts that come in conctact with each other, AND the film of oil will also create a better seal for your valves. If a player finds that their valves are getting slow - that typically is from the over use of the Linkage or Bearing oils (under the cap and by the bumpers). Hans' advice is to stop OVER oiling your valves - NOT to stop oiling them. But, Luke, your advice might be good for my business! :) Sincerely Ken Pope 'Just put your lips together and Blow' Pope Instrument Repair 80 Wenham St. Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 (617)522-0532 http://www.poperepair.com ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/hans%40pizka.de ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/lzyla%40suddenlink.net ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

[Hornlist] Favorite Pieces from youth
I am presenting a lecture on horn pedagogy at the state music educators convention in the spring. I am putting together a list of some of my favorite solos from my youth and the tunes my son played as he was growing up. Several tunes were recommended by Thomas Bacon via his web site. I want to invite everyone to submit the names of pieces that you may have enjoyed as a young horn player that may not be on the list of "standard" pieces for horn solo. Perhaps my favorite is "Four Easy Pieces" by Alec Wilder (Margun Music publisher). My son played this in elementary school. I will never forget his smile after playing the little horn glissando at the end of one of the movements. Please add any of your favorites. Re: [Hornlist] Mouthpiece problem
You should use a medium sized mouthpiece with an 8-D. After you play on it a while, you will be able to produce a good tone and you high register will be fine. I put a Lawson leadpipe on my 8-D (made in 1968) and it was much better in the high register. Recently, I started using a small mouthpiece on my Paxman Model 20L which is slightly larger than an 8-D. I was surprised to find that it worked very well in the low register and the high register is great. It is interesting to note that the mouthpiece that comes with the 8-D (7B-W) is a small mouthpiece. Maybe the company knows what they are doing? The Holton horn is a good instrument. I played one for several years before I purchased my Paxman Model 20L. I don't know of any connection between Holton and any other company. My advice is to play as many different instruments as you can and select the one that feels the best to you. If you stay with a major brand, you will probably get a good instrument. Re: [Hornlist] An unusual response
In my youth, I wrote a letter to Phillip Farkas asking him what would be the best instrument to play in marching band as we had no mellophones. He said that he played the sousaphone in the marching band when he was in high school. He did say that I should practice my horn every day durning marching season so as not to lose my horn embouchure. I ended up playing the euphonium, which was a real hoot since, our band being a military style band, I got to play all those glorious countermelodies in the marches instead of the upbeats. CORdially, Luke Zyla - Original Message - From: "Loren Mayhew" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'The Horn List'" Sent: Saturday, June 14, 2008 5:02 PM Subject: RE: [Hornlist] An unusual response Trombones, Baritones, Euphonium, tubas and their siblings have large mouthpieces. In order to play them, you have to "free buzz" the notes because you can't use the rim to compensate for weak lip muscles as you can on the smaller horn and trumpet mouthpieces. This makes you lips stronger. When you go back to the horn, you can play with less pressure because your lip muscles vibrate better and are now stronger which has the effect of not cutting off the blood circulation to your lips so they have more endurance. At least that is my experience. Re: [Hornlist] MPC & tone quality
Valerie in Tacoma, The biggest influence on tone quality is the player. Over the past 26 years, our principal horn of the WV Symphony, Marsha Palmer, has played several different horns including a Holton Farkas, Paxman 20L, Conn 8-D, and now a Schmid Triple. She has played many different mouthpieces. Low and behold, she always sounds like Marsha Palmer: terrific! I have played a Holton Farkas, a Paxman 20L and a Conn 8-D. I have returned to my Paxman with a Lawson Mouthpiece. Guess what, I still sound like me! The only real difference that I have noticed with each change in equipment was the level of confidence I experience. I feel the most comfortable and confident with the Paxman. It just feels good to play that horn and I can blend well with Marsha. Notice that I did not say match her tone quality. I could never sound like Marsha and she could never sound like me, but we sound great together. I am not sure that I agree with Froydis. Mouthpieces all tend to sound the same after you become accustomed to the new mouthpiece. I just look for something that feels comfortable. I have recently changed to a Lawson F660 which is a very shallow mouthpiece. I was surprised how well it plays in the low register and the high register is sweet! I have always played pretty big mouthpieces, I played on a Holton DC for over 20 years, so this is a real revelation to me. However, I still sound pretty much like me. So, Valerie, you can expect that you will sound pretty much like Valerie for a long time. Find equipment that you feel comfortable with, but don't expect that it will make you sound like someone else. CORdially, Luke Zyla 2nd horn, West Virginia Symphony Orchestra - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Friday, June 13, 2008 9:52 PM Subject: [Hornlist] MPC & tone quality I read a paper by Froydis W. that said something to the effect that the mouthpiece (mpc) you play has more to do w/ your tone quality than the horn you play. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) I recently had an experience that supports this idea. I met w/ a horn friend recently to check out our new gear -- our horns. I recently purchased a rose bronze Holton Merker and he'd just purchased a new Atkinson Erfert. The other guy had an absolutely gorgeous tone on his Atkinson horn. We traded horns, but not mouthpieces. To my surprize, he sounded almost exactly the same on my Merker as he did his Atkinson -- AND -- I sounded almost exactly the same on his Atkinson as I did on my Merker! It wasn't until we traded mouthpieces that we both sounded significantly different. His mpc is a Bach 7 & mine is a Farkas DC. His tone was bright & mine was very dark by comparison. I'm sure this isn't much of a revelation to the mouthpiece ghuru's out there, but it was a shocking revelation to me. The interesting thing though, is when I played his horn w/ his mpc I didn't sound like him. And, when he played my horn w/ my mpc, he didn't sound like me. Hmmm... I wonder what this all means...?? [Hornlist] Franz Welser-Möst Comments
In a post concert interview, Franz Welser-Möst said that the Cleveland Orchestra is the most "European" of all American orchestras. I find this to be an interesting comment knowing that the horn section is a solid 8-D section, perhaps the last major American orchestra horn section to be so after NY Phil converted to the Schmid. I always thought that Boston was much more European in their concept. I have only heard Cleveland, Boston, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in live concert. I certainly wouldn't consider Cleveland more "European" than the others. I wonder what makes an orchestra sound "European" rather than American? Re: [Hornlist] Counting rests
I think that we all search for the answer to this question. I have had similar experiences with miscounted rests too many times to admit. I think this is the number one cause of mistakes in any performance. Here are some things that might help: Use your fingers. Right hand will keep count of the tens and left hand the ones. For example, m. 24 would be two fingers on the right hand and five on the left. As you start from m. 1, open the hand for m.1-5 and close for 6-10. Split up long rests into smaller pieces that correspond to major entrances of other instruments. For example, in a 50 measure rest you can note that the woodwinds enter in m.23, the trumpet enter in m. 42, etc. I wouldn't split it by doing 23 measures then 19 measures, etc, because this would have you counting different groupings than you other horn mates. Count as a team. Have a subtle signal for the arrival at every rehearsal letter. Communicate with each other to help keep your place. If you play assistant, help the principal keep their place. It helps to know the piece well. Listen to recordings and try to get a score to study the piece. Dover publications has lots of very inexpensive scores. Hope this helps. Luke Zyla 2nd horn, WV Symphony Orchestra - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "The Horn List" Sent: Sunday, April 27, 2008 9:23 PM Subject: [Hornlist] Counting rests I'm going to ask - with some embarrassment - a question that I feel I shouldn't have to ask by now. But here goes anyway. I just played 5th horn in Mahler's 8th symphony, and my enjoyment was only tempered by the fact that I missed 3 entries. Now this wasn't helped by a part with lots of 'Tacet bis' passages, but I also miscounted one and daydreamed one. I've tried many things over the years: counting on my fingers; counting backwards (5234, 4234, 3234...); watching the conductor both for entries and to make sure I'm not counting in 2 when I should be counting in 4 or vice-versa. I've certainly got better, and I more-or-less hold down 1st in another orchestra. But it's perhaps the biggest bugbear of my playing: if I do come in I normally get the notes, and sometimes they're reasonably musical too. Trying to be analytical, a few things I've identified as problems are: - After a pause and change of time-signature, being uncertain whether the conductor's beating a bar rest with an upbeat, or a bar in. - Counting at the wrong speed (in 2 rather than 4, or vice-versa). - Continuing to count even after the entry (hence the counting backwards). - With a long sequence of rests, forgetting which rest I'm counting. - Counting long numbers (26,2; 27,2 - if it's at a fast tempo). I've certainly improved, but I'm still not where I should be. Does anybody have any other hints or ideas about other things that I might try. Re: [Hornlist] Dvorak no.9
Hans, Phil had surgery shortly after the section appeared with our orchestra. It was either gastric bypass or a stapling. He was off for quite a while. It was a very necessary operation. The section had to sit while playing because Phil could not stand and he was having trouble with breathing, however you could not tell by his performance. It was a stunning performance despite his troubles with health. I am glad he was able to deal with the weight issue. I have never been impressed by Maazel on the podium. I heard him conduct the Pittsburgh Symphony and the result was similar. It is so difficult for musicians to perform well on big tours like that. So many horror stories are told. Pittsburgh just returned from a tour of Spain and other parts of Europe. The conductor took the concertmaster, principal clarinet, and horn out to dinner in Spain and they all got food poisoning. (except the conductor). Bill Cabellero toughed it out, but they had to have subs play for the concertmaster and principal clarinet. Bill says that this is not uncommon when on tour. The orchestra always takes a doctor with them. You are probably not getting much response to this question because it is hard to say. Look at the section listing on www.hornplayer.net and you will see a huge variety of horns used in major symphony orchestras today. After a few minutes of browsing, I saw only one orchestra that had a section of matched horns: the Cleveland Orchestra with a section of Conn 8-Ds. Years ago, there was a survey posted in the Horn Call that showed a predominance of Conn 8-D, however, the popularity of this horn has fallen considerably. We would be interested in your results if you took the time to do a survey yourself. [Hornlist] cool valve bumpers
McMaster-Carr carries white Buna-N cord stock that can be used as valve stop bumpers. How cool is that! It has a durometer rating of 70 which is the perfect hardness for this application. I tried some Viton, durometer 75, and it is too hard, causing an annoying sound when playing Kopprasch. I also ordered some brass shims to place under the valve caps to keep the top bearing firmly seated. Paxman valve caps don't contact the top bearing when fully screwed down. It is a mystery why Paxman makes them like this. [Hornlist] Valve bumper material
I ordered a length of 3/16" diameter Viton O-ring cord stock from McMaster-Carr yesterday afternoon and received it today. Great service! I replaced one bumper on my Paxman 20L. I found the Viton material to be a little firmer than Buna-N causing a bit of noise. Even though Viton is more resistant to oils (particularly synthetic), I prefer the Buna-N. It is more flexible and results in quieter valves. By the way, 3/16" is perfect for a Paxman Model 20L. No trimming required. I am pretty sure this size works for my Conn 8-D. McMaster-Carr carries the Buna-N O-ring cord stock. It is very inexpensive. The Viton was only $2.90 for a foot. Buna-N is less expensive. Shipping and handling was $4.25. Forget cork and use Buna-N. [Hornlist] emergency repair stuff
Most of us carry an emergency repair kit for replacing broken strings, lost bumpers, etc. I had an unpleasant experience last week which made me add another item. Last week, I completely dismantled my horn for a thourough cleaning. Everything went well until I started to put new strings on the valve levers. To my horror, I discovered that I lost the screw that holds the string for the third valve. Being a Paxman, it has metric threads so I though I would have to retap the hole for standard threads. Finding a new screw in a hurry was a real problem, as I had an important rehearsal for Beethoven 7 that evening. I didn't want to play that piece with my 8-D. I was very please to find out that Yamaha screws will fit a Paxman. Found one at the music store in Charleston, WV on my way to rehearsal. So, I now carry a couple of extra screws just in case I accidentally drop one again. Re: [Hornlist] horn bumpers & allergies
Dawn, Neoprene is not a good material to use in the presence of oils. It breaks down. I find it to be to bouncy and squishy. Buna-N is very resistant to oils and exhibits just the right degree of hardness. Viton is also a very good material, but I have never used it. Luke Zyla - Original Message - From: "Dawn McCandless" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "The Horn List" Sent: Monday, February 04, 2008 1:36 PM Subject: [Hornlist] horn bumpers & allergies Just curious if anybody else who is allergic to latex and other such things would have an answer for this question. I am also allergic to the actual rubber plants which I found out after someone gave us one for a present. After a bout of continued worsened asthma I realized the plant was making the asthma worse. So, it left the house. It was after that that I realized I was also allergic to latex gloves. So, my question is, since those neoprene bumpers are so close to the mouthpipe, what is the possibility of them causing allergic reactions? I pretty much need to use the asthma inhaler before playing to begin with. Still, has anybody noticed any problems with those bumpers regardless of their tiny size? All the discussion about cork this seems like good time to ask. The neoprene bumpers on my horn are falling apart and I was seriously thinking of going back to cork because of the annoyance of these present neoprene bumpers. These ones are super soft and flexible unlike the really hard ones that have been on some of the other horns. This is my main, and really only horn - unless one counts the old single beat up Getzen sitting in the corner never being used I want something more dependable for bumpers than the flimsy things that are in the horn right now. They are splitting from age so it's past time to replace them. The ones that came with the horn are so soft and flimsy that they occasionally fall out during playing. What a nuisance that has been. They came with the horn. Accordingly they were supposed to be the right size and they look like they were fit well. With my other horns of old, the corks never fell out unless they were old and cracking. Has anybody else had problems with neoprene corks falling out while playing? And, again, are the neoprene bumpers a health risk to people allergic to latex or any kind? Re: [Hornlist] Valve Corks
Go to the hardware store and buy an appropriate sized "O" ring that can be cut to the proper size. This material is flexible enough to install, yet not so hard that it "clicks". It is impervious to petroleum products and will last forever. I just purchased a Yamaha Triple horn for my son that had the same problem. I changed to the "O" ring material and it works fine. The material I use is called "buna N". If you have an industrial rubber supply store in your town, you can even by it in sheets. This material and a variety of other materials is available online from McMaster-Carr. http://www.mcmaster.com/ They cary just about every type of material you can imagine. They also have lots of information about the hardness of the different materials and their resistance to chemicals. Here is their explanation regarding hardness: Durometer is the international standard for measuring the hardness of rubber, plastic, and most nonmetallic materials. The hardness of a material is its resistance to surface penetration. Harder materials have more wear resistance, but they are also less flexible. Note that an object may fall within more than one scale. For example, a typical shoe heel is 95 Shore OO, 70 Shore A, and 22 Shore D durometer. They have a very cool chart that compares the numbers to common materials. [Hornlist] Jeremiah Clarke
Most of us have performed the Clarke Trumpet Voluntary. (formerly known as the Purcell Trumpet Voluntary) Here is an interesting article from this month's BBC History Magazine. 1 December 1707 Wedding composer shoots himself. Jeremiah Clarke, composer of one of the most popular pieces of wedding music, shot himself on this day. He began his musical career as a boy chorister in the Chapel Royal, singing at the coronation of James II. He progressed to organist of Winchester College, then vicar-choral at St. Paul's Cathedral. Despite composing anthems, harpsichord pieces and music for the theatre, Clarke was to become renowned for the so-called Trumpet Voluntary. For years this misnamed piece was also wrongly accredited to Henry Purcell, and the version we hear at weddings today for organ, trumpet and drum is merely and adaptation by Sir Henry Wood. Clarke's actual music, The Prince of Denmark's March appeared both as a harpsichord piece and as part of a suite for wind instruments including a trumpet. He dedicated it to Queen Anne's husband, George, Prince of Denmark, and during the Second World War it was broadcast to occupied Denmark. Jeremiah was affected by bouts of depression, and on suffering unrequited love he flipped a coin to see whether to hang or drown himself- it landed in the mud, so he shot himself instead. article by Melanie McWilliams Merry Christmas! Re: Playing softly (was: [Hornlist] Rims, Chops, Airstreams (was C series mouthpieces))
"So the question is: What's different--chops, tongue, air, gut, pressure, jaw, whatever--between loud and soft? There has to be some difference, and someone, somewhere, must be able to codify it." Howard Sanner First of all, may I pass along the mantra of our section: "Just play the horn!" This many times helps to let the incredible complexity of the body take over and produce the required result. Loud playing- lots of air through an open aperture. For good control the embouchure must be firm, yet very flexible. Being in good physical condition helps a lot. Having an embouchure that is in good physical condition is required. Soft playing - a little bit of air through a very small aperture. The embouchure must be very firm, yet flexible enough to vibrate at the very center. I tell my students that you must play intensely soft. Just use what is necessary to produce the tone. Too much tension in other parts of the body will be a disaster. Simplify! I have heard so many good players trash a soft passage because they take a forte breath, pause, and splee-ah, a clam. You don't need much air to play soft, so don't take a full tank. Also, follow these steps: 1 breathe 2 play. Never: 1 breathe 2 pause 3 play. This most often results in: 1 breathe 2 pause 3 CLAM! I notice that you say you practice several hours a day. Hopefully, this includes lots of rest periods. Too much susustained practice can really damage your muscles resulting in an embouchure that will not respond, a fuzzy tone, no dynamic contrast and no high register. Try taking a couple of days off and then notice how you sound and how your embouchure feels. If it feels great, you are probably abusing your embouchure in your practice periods. Check out Joe Singers Embouchure Building book and notice how much rest time he prescribes in the heavy routine. Lots of rest! Have you ever had several days of rehearsals and noticed how much stronger you feel. It is because you are playing regularly for 2.5 hours a day, but thank goodness the conductor talks a lot and you are counting lots of rests. A book related to this whole affair is "The Inner Game of Tennis". The follow up to this is "The Inner Game of Music". I prefer the tennis book. I read it many years ago in college. I helps to put many things in perspective for us analysts. I am sure other successful players have other ways of thinking on this subject. All I can say is that this works for me. I is a compilation and distillation of all the ideas that were passed on to me by teachers and colleagues over the years. I hope I have helped. Good luck! [Hornlist] John Barrows
I just got a new turntable today and am listening to my old recording of John Barrows performing the Wilder Sonatas and Suites. What a fantastic sound and beautiful interpretation. From looking at his picture on the front of the record jacket it looks as though he is playing a Conn 8-D. Does anyone know what kind of horn he played? Also, is there any biographical information available about Mr. Barrows? Perhaps someone on the list knew him. I am not even certain if he is still with us. [Hornlist] BSO- Horn concerto premier
My son and I are planning to drive up to Boston to hear James Somerville premier the new concerto for horn and orchestra written by Elliot Carter. I was wondering if anyone familiar with Boston Symphony Hall can recommend what is the best seating. Here is the link to the seating chart: http://www.bso.org/bso/mods/toc_01_gen_images.jsp;jsessionid=1C02QV0I1HRVUCTFQMGCFEQ?id=bcat12370002 CORdially, Luke Zyla 2nd horn, WV Symphony Orchestra www.wvsymphony.org ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
[Hornlist] Lohengrin
I am sitting here practicing the original notation part to the Introduction to Act III of the Opera Lohengrin. It starts in G horn in the first measure and switches to E horn on the third beat of measure 2. Later to G, back to E, then D and later A-flat horn. I am wondering if the rest of the opera has that many rapid changes? Why would it be written so? I have found very little information about Victor Ewald via Google. Does anyone know of any site that has biographical information about this composer. My quintet will perform it next weekend and I am responsible for introducing the tune. [Hornlist] Walter Lawson memories
I was very sad to hear of Walter's passing. Everyone that ever met him knows that he was an outstanding gentleman. I first met him at a Horn Workshop that we had at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV in the early 70's. I learned so much from him about horn acoustics; knowledge that I have passed on to my students over many years. One vivid memory was during his presentation, he was showing off a new horn case. He put a brand new Alexander in the case and threw it across the room at a brick wall to he horror of the entire audience. He seemed to get a kick out of that stunt. My son, Marc, finally got to meet him last year shortly before the workshop was closed and moved to New England. I was happy that he got to meet one of the great legends of the horn world. We will all miss him very much, but his legacy will live on in the friends he made and the wonderful instruments, mouthpieces, and leadpipes he produced over the years. Hey Walter, maybe with you up there, the angels will quit honking on those nasty trumpets and play the most Godly instrument: THE CORNO!
