You can just go to HMC and do a PCHID reassign from bad one to a good
one in same or in another Escon Card.

z10 HMC Automatic Activation Profiles

2011-07-15 Thread Carlos Bodra - Pessoal

Hi List!

In z10 HMC under Automatic Activation Profiles, I can found following
MODES under Processor tag for each LPAR defined:

ESA/390 - OK! It´s for traditional CP´s to run z/vm, z/vse and z/OS
ESA/390 TPF - OK! I never saw a TPF system running... (forgot it)
Coupling Facility: OK! Name already define what system should do.
Linux Only: OK! It´s for IFL´s to rum z/vm and/or Linux on z. (no z/vse
nor z/os under z/vm)

Z/VM: When should I use this option?

z/OS 1.4 running under z/VM 5.4 over a z890

2011-06-15 Thread Carlos Bodra - Pessoal

Hello.

I need to prepare a migration from an old OS/390 2.5 to z/OS 1.4 over a
z890 machine.

Can I use z/VM 5.4 as host to a z/OS 1.4 guest? OS/390 2.5 will continue
to run over a 9672

until all has been migrated to z/OS.

z/OS 1.4 could run in compatibility mode or not, but this is another
question to z/OS list.

Thanks in advance

z/VM RedHat Virtual Machine Memory abend

2011-04-20 Thread Carlos Bodra - Pessoal

Hi s390x Gurus

I´m new to Linux on z and we are conducting a POC test of Linux Red Hat
with Oracle running under z/VM 5.4 RSU 1003

and a z/10 BC model A00 (IFL Only).

If linux virtual machine is defined with 64G in directory we got an
abend during startup (see below). Doing some tests I found that I
can define it until 59G in directory (60794036k from TOP linux command)
and it will startup correctly.

My questions are:

1 - Is this a limitation of linux s390x or Red Hat distribution?
2 - Is this a linux s390x bug or Red Hat distribution?
3 - How can I circunvent this so we can continue with POC (Proof Of
Concept)?

Thanks in advance for all hints and tips about.

 Thanks a lot for hints.
Barton, and others, I will redifine storage areas to get xstore. I
can add more 2 or 3 3390-3 page volumes. Today there is only one
volume for page and one for spool.
Please keep in mind, that this is a no production z10 installed in
our data center just for POC tests, so I can change definitions very
very fast.
I will do changes next monday and return here with results.
Thanks again and Happy Easter for all!!!

Check the amount of paging space you have defined for the VM system.

Is this a brand new VM install right out of the box? If so, then
this is most likely to be the problem. 48G of real, plus the default
paging areas in a brand new VM install add up to just about 52G or so,
depending on whether you used mod 3 or mod 9s.
It works for MAINT because CMS is extremely memory efficient; it
doesn’t require that every page in the virtual machine definition be
actually present when it IPLs, and it touches only what it actually
needs. Linux touches every page at some point, so you need enough
paging space to support the total size of all the virtual machines you
define, plus a little bit of insurance.
Add at least 3-4 mod 9 or mod 27s as paging space and see if the
problem goes away.

Sherry

Order PTF UV97540 and you will got lastest RSU for z/VM 5.4. (1008)
I did it eletronically and applied it a couple of days ago and a lot of
PSP reported ptfs was installed.
You can use Auomated Installation and Service (I never tried!) or
Service Guide (I used this, since I working with VM since 1980!)

Defenitly if you have a z10 machine you should apply RSU.

Good luck and enjoy.

2011-02-25 Thread Carlos Bodra - Pessoal

Hello

I was checking how z/vm 5.4 supports 3592-E05 (TS1120) installed into a
library 3577-L5U.
I have a 3592-C06 ficon attachment to connect z10 to tape drive. I can
load, write, read and
unload cartridge using 3577-L5U operator panel. I was unable to find out
how to tell to z/vm
to pick up cartridge into slot, move it to drive 1 (for example) or how
to automate process to
return cartridge from tape drive to slot after operation (read/write)
was finished. Cartridge
unload, but I need to use operator panel to move it from drive to slot
library.

Thanks for all comments.

2011-02-23 Thread Carlos Bodra - Pessoal
If you have access to shopzseries our ibmlink(servlink) check PSP for
2098Device.
If you z/vm is at 1003 level you will need to apply about 13 ptfs that
isn´t included in RSU.

I did this just a week ago upgrading from 0903 level running in z890 to
1003 to run in z10-BC.

Now working in 2107Device for zvm 5.4 1003 and following 3592Device.

A lot of fun!!!

ESS800 Configuration

2010-10-05 Thread Carlos Bodra - Pessoal

 Hi

We are in process to configure some area of our 2105-800 to be used by
open systems.
We start process and when we try to building host access (option modify

message:

ERROR 1199 Information server problem. An unknown server error occurred.
Try again. If problem persists call service representative.

Service representative was called and checked out machine. No errors
found. Machine is working well with Escon/Ficon adapters.
We already try to do same definition a lot of times using both clusters,
any kind of host (as400, RS6000, Linux z etc..)

Any hint about?

Did you IPL a linux guest or LPAR and use it to drive a fabric login
or fabric discovery ?

The ESS and DS4700 will only show you the hosts which have contacted
them, since they don't do discovery of the host systems. The z10 will
not drive any discovery actions in the SAN by itself ( unlike other
platforms ) You have to bring up a Linux image and do a SAN fabric /
device scan or attempt to configure the FCP storage from z/VM.

z10 shark 800 and FCP

2010-09-27 Thread Carlos Bodra - Pessoal

 Hi

I´m trying to connect a z10 to a shark using FCP protocol, but without
success.

We did some tests that are describe below:

1 - Connect z10 to shark 800 sw2 adapter with both sides defined as
Ficon. Works fine

2 - Connect z10 to shark 800 sw2 adapter with both sides defined as FCP.
Direct connection, no switch envolved. Didn´t work. We aren´t able to
define open system storage in ESS Specialist. Seems that shark doesn´t
see FCP adapter in z10. After reading some material (redbooks) we
found information about that a direct connection didn´t work. Is
mandatory use a switch.

3 - Connect z10 to shark 800 sw2 adapter with both sides defined as FCP
and using an old IBM 2109-S16. Didn´t work. We aren´t able to define
open system storage in ESS Specialist. Seems that shark doesn´t see
FCP adapter in z10.

4 - Connect z10 to shark 800 sw2 adapter with both sides defined as FCP
and using an IBM 2005-B16. Didn´t work. We aren´t able to define open
system storage in ESS Specialist. Seems that shark doesn´t see FCP
adapter in z10.

5 - Connect z10 to DS4700 via FC adapter with z10 define as FCP and
storage defined as FC and using an old IBM 2109-S16. Didn´t work. We
aren´t able to access open dasd.

We checked microcode level for shark and seems to be ok. If I connect

without problems.

Since z10 with FCP access is new for us, any hint or tip about are welcome.

Re: z10 shark 800 and FCP

2010-09-27 Thread Carlos Bodra - Pessoal

 Ray,

Sorry for a not so clear definition.

What happens is that we are trying to define Open System Storage in
ESS800 and when we try to allocate dasd space to z10 (open space using
FCP defined ports), ESS800 didn´t able to complete

configuration, so I can´t define a volume inside this space.

zvm was installed in eckd disks as traditional zvm does, but I´n not
trying to ipl from fcp dasd yet, since I was not able to define it yet.

Problem seems to be something missing in definitions or wrong sequence.

As I describe in previous email, ports (at ess800 and z10) and fibre
cable are ok, since if I chance ports to Ficon protocol all works fine.

A question arrised now: ports are SX (shot wave) in both sides, cable
could be same used for Ficon? Or FC demands a specific cable?

There is some configuration that needs to be done inside linux. You
need to tell linux which busid (device number), target wwpn, and lun
to use. If you are using Suse, yast has a nice setup wizard. Have
you done any configuration inside of Linux? The output of lszfcp -D,

OSA-ICC

2010-07-28 Thread Carlos Bodra
 Hi Folks!
I just can put my hands in a brand new z10 BC and all it's new
features. Previuos machine was an MP3000 H50.
I was checkin about new features and one that comes up at 1st
requirement is to configure and use OSA-ICC,
so I can put 02 old 3174 22L out of service and remove them from
room.
I was checking OSA-ICC Users Guide, but read it demand some time, so
let me ask if anyone here has a cookbook
fo how to configure it. If I undestood correctly, I should setup a
closed lan between stations that will have access as
 console, is this right?
Can I use HMC as a station to have these sessions?
In other words, all hints and tips will be welcome.
 Thanks in advance

Saga continues..

2010-05-18 Thread Carlos Bodra

Hi...

After got fix from Ingolf Salm for VSE/ESA runs under z10 BC, saga
continues.

Customer has MP3000 7060-H50 with internal disks. They are formated as
3390-3 only.
Since DS6000 Interoperability matrix show that z/VM 4.4.0 is supported,
no problem

on zVM side.

My question now is:

Will VSE/ESA 2.3.1 support volumes defined on DS6800 (all 3390-3 - no
large volumes).

Any hint about?

z/vm 4.4 and vse 2.3.1 running in a z10 BC

2010-05-17 Thread Carlos Bodra

Hello

We have a chance to migrate our hardware from MP3000 H50 running vse/esa
2.3.1 under z/vm 4.4.0 to a new z10 BC machine.

Since we have a lot of CA tools, under z/vm and vse, we need to replace
machine as soon as possible and after migrate systems
to z/vm 5.4 (z/vm 6.0??) and z/vse 4.2, but, this will demand a greater
effort.

My questions is simple, can I just shutdown systems, (vm and vse)
replace H50 by z10 BC and up systems again? Of course,
I will ask to CA a new LMP Key for new serial of BC machine. Will z/vm
4.4 and vse 2.3.1 runs error free (as today under H50) on

z10 BC?

Thanks a lot for comments

RSU installation

2010-01-27 Thread Carlos Bodra

Hello,

I just installing z/vm 5.4 in an z890.
Im installing from DVD located into hmcs machine. No problem to
install it.
After long time without doing this kind of task, I can see that
documentation now is much more detailed.

My problem now is to install RSU and complete z/vm install.

I downloaded from ibmlink rsu pack for z/vm 5.4.

What I need to do now is ftp files rlst and pftpx to my z/vm
4.4, deterse them and record a dvd.
My doubts are:

1 - how can I ftp both files to z/vm 4.4 and define lrecl 1024 and
recfm f, since if I do not specify nothing during ftp
they are ftped to A mdisk as V and 8192.
2 - Deterse just works if files are F and 1024?
3 - Using Nero as burning software to record DVD, what kind of
extension I should use? iso image? data files?

Thanks a lot

z/VM V5R4.0 Information Center - December 2008

IBM publishes the z/VM documentation in an information center using
the IBM Eclipse Help System framework. Publishing in an information
center is in addition to z/VM product documentation published in
BookManager and PDF format and available through the z/VM Collection
and z/VM Internet Library. The content of the z/VM V5R4.0 Information
Center (information for the z/VM base and optional features) is

Re: WAIT STATE

You can force a console address. In LOAD screem, type into LOADPARM
field a known 3270 (local nsna) address.

1010 is a wait state code indicating a usable console could not be
found. IPL VM with that address in LOADPARM. For example if your IPL
volume is on address 0100 and your 3270 is at address 0200: IPL 0100
LOADPARM 0200

I never tried to put into LOADPARM sysg as console address, but this
works if you get SAIPL with cons=sysg to get VM operator console into
HMC Software Messages tab.

Terry,

From the SAL screen, there is a PF key to list the files on the CP
parm disk. It may help you in determining what went wrong. If you made
a backup of the SYSTEM CONFIG on the parm disk, then you can use the
FN= and FT= options in the IPL parameters area to point to another
SYSTEM CONFIG. If you have another CP parm disk (i.e. 2 or 3) that
would work, then there is field in the upper left of the SAL screen
where you can point to another CP parm disk. Press enter on the SAL
screen to unprotect the CP parm disk field, and press enter after
entering a new value.

HCP1010W NO CONSOLE AVAILABLE.

Explanation: The indicated disabled wait state PSW is loaded when an
operational primary or alternate operator's console cannot be found.

If you were running in virtual mode, CONMODE was not set to 3270.

System Action: The system enters a disabled wait state (wait state code =
1010). If using the Stand-Alone Program Loader (SAPL), all registers
contain
the values held at the time the wait state was entered. Register 2
contains

the console device address.

Operator Response: There is probably a hardware malfunction. Notify your
system support personnel. Verify that the RIOGEN macro instruction
properly

defined the primary and alternate system consoles.

If you were running in virtual mode, enter the TERMinal CONMODE 3270
command,

and re-IPL.

If using SAPL, either specify the correct console address on the LOADPARM
parameter of the IPL command or specify the correct console address
using the
'CONS=' IPL parameter on the SAPL menu screen. Refer to Overriding
Stand-Alone

Program Loader Defaults in z/VM: CP Planning and Administration.

If the problem persists, contact your IBM Support Center personnel to
diagnose

and correct the hardware error.

Replace old BSC 3 connections

2008-06-02 Thread Carlos Bodra
This question was cross posted into OS/390, VSE and zVM discussion
lists

Hello

Today we have an IBM MP3000 with 04 WAC cards, 03 of them running BSC3
and on running a back-to-back vtam connection.
We have a bid to replace this machine by a new z9 and get some software
advantages. Today we have no problems with CPU or memory bottlenecks.
Ou problem is limited to substitute access from WAC cards, so we can
keep BSC3 lines sending data to application program.
Simple solution could be an IBM 3745 model 170 (smalest) to keep same
cenario and migrate from adapter cards to a channel independent machine,
even connect thru Escon converter. IBM says no more NCP software
licenses are available.
What we can use as a substitute for WAC cards now how to connect this
solution to z9?

Thanks in advance for any comment or hint

RES: 3174 Don't work with TCP/IP Under VMESA

2007-07-11 Thread Carlos Bodra
Alan,

3174 can participate in a TCP/IP network if has Ethernet adapter or into a
Token Ring if configured with TKR adapter. There are some specific
configuration questions to make this possible.

That 3174 IP gateway feature only operates when the 3174 is a) running SNA
microcode and is b) attached to VTAM. It is not supported for use with the
VM TCP stack.and does not work.

It's nie to know that you have the other one of those beasts. I thought I
had the only one left in the world...

TCP/IP Message

2007-06-22 Thread Carlos Bodra
Hello.

We are running z/VM 4.4 and since initial installation no problem arises.

This week, we started to receive following messages:

DTCUTI002E TCP/IP is low on TCBs. Of 256 blocks, 24 are free. You should
monitor this.

DTCUTI002E TCP/IP was very low on TCP connections. Of 341 blocks, 85 are
free after 85 more allocated.

DTCUTI002E TCP/IP was very low on TCP connections. Of 285 blocks, 41 are
free after 85 more allocated.

These messages occur with differences of some days. In TCPIP PROFILE file we
have only SMALLDATABUFFERPOOLSIZE 150 included. All others buffers are
default values.

What other buffer(s) I should modify (define) to solve this problem. Our
network has about 300 to 350 at peak moment.

Thanks for now!

Carlos

Here's a neat twist for a conference. Dunno how well it will work, but it's
innovative and a cool hack.

Real Life is meeting Second Life at WAVV !!!

We're going to try having a little fun.  Want to hear more?

Are you a regular WAVV attendee who can't make it to Green Bay this year?

Will you be attending WAVV, but think someone on your team back home
(perhaps your manager) would like to see what WAVV has to offer?

Are you someone who has never attended WAVV, but are curious what you've
been missing? (WAVV = World Alliance of VSE, VM, Linux)

You may, or may not, be familiar with 'Second Life'.   Within Second Life,
you become immersed in a 3-D virtual world. For example, IBM has constructed
a
complete virtual version of the Briefing Center at the Boeblingen Lab.

Using Second Life technology, we're planning to do a simultaneous broadcast
of the 'IBM Update' session at  WAVV. The update session generally covers a
brief overview of z/VSE, z/VM, System z hardware, and Linux on System z.

It begins on Saturday, May 19, at 9:00 AM Central daylight time (7:00 AM
PDT, 8:00 AM MDT, 10:00 AM EDT, and 4:00 PM (16:00) Central European time).
The session will last approximately one hour. .

You can find instructions how to get yourself established in Second Life and
where to attend the meeting on the z/VSE web site.

http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zvse/

Follow the instructions (there is a PDF to download) and join those of us at
WAVV - live (almost., there's a 2 minute delay). .

To tell the truth, we've never done this before.  As a result, there are no
guarantees.  If it doesn't work, we apologize.   Assuming it does work,
you'll be
able to learn more about z/VSE, z/VM, System z hardware, and Linux on System
z.   You may also begin to appreciate just a fraction of what's available at
WAVV.  Its worth a try.

RES: NSS missing

2007-02-13 Thread Carlos Bodra
Mary,

CLEAN means clean, it deletes all files from spool and other special files
as NSS and other. You should use CLEAR, that only deletes spool files but
Keep intact NSS files.

For a rapid recovery, since you copy Devl disks, you can use SPXTAPE and
backup only NSS segments from DEVL system and then restore it in you TEST
system. It's easy and fast, than restore all DEVL system again.

I hope this help you.

Good Morning All

A VM newbie here and I've done something that I don't know how to fix. I
built a z/VM 5.2 Test system off of our z/VM 5.2 Devl system by copying the
520RSD 520SPD and 520PGD to 520RST 520SPT and 520SPT. The first
time I IPL'd the 5.2 test system, I chose to do a 'clean noautolog'.The
system IPL's, but I have no Named Saved Segments. We thought these NSS's
were on the spool volume, so we restored the devl spool volume over to the
test and re'ipld. We have the same problem. When we try to logon to
'maint', it is missing the cmspipes and cmsvmlib. Is there a way I can
rebuild all the NSS without knowing what they are??? Now that I ask the
question - I'm thinking 'no', because I can't logon to CMS.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

p.s. - it just might be easier to start from scratch.

Thanks for your help and patience,

Mary Elwood

Sure you can, but you may not like the results. Why do you want to

2006-12-04 Thread Carlos Bodra
Hi!

We are installing DB2 V7.4 and have a -934 error during start up of server
machine unde a z/VM 4.4 Level 0501.
What sounds strange is that if we start server without saved segment support,
no problems occurs.
Our old data base is a SQL version 3.4, so saved segments grows a lot and we
don´t know if this problem is because wrong definition of saved segments (using
vmfsgmap exec)

Since SQL is running in production and these saved segments have original IBM
names, we did need to rename new ones. Bellow is where we put them:

DB2RMGR 01400-02300
DB2ISQL 00B00-00B60
DB2SQLDS 008B0-00A2F
DB2XRDS 01400-0237F
DB2SP03 008B0-0237F -- This is DB Space

Server machine has 128MB memory defined in directory.

Since we guess that DB2 program directory is not complete about how to
generated saved segments, we are trying to get some help and hints from VM-L
gurus.

Thanks a lot for help.
