z/OS 1.4 running under z/VM 5.4 over a z890
Hello. I need to prepare a migration from an old OS/390 2.5 to z/OS 1.4 over a z890 machine. Can I use z/VM 5.4 as host to a z/OS 1.4 guest? OS/390 2.5 will continue to run over a 9672 until all has been migrated to z/OS. z/OS 1.4 could run in compatibility mode or not, but this is another question to z/OS list. z/VM RedHat Virtual Machine Memory abend
Hi s390x Gurus I´m new to Linux on z and we are conducting a POC test of Linux Red Hat with Oracle running under z/VM 5.4 RSU 1003 and a z/10 BC model A00 (IFL Only). If linux virtual machine is defined with 64G in directory we got an abend during startup (see below). Re: z/VM RedHat Virtual Machine Memory abend
Thanks a lot for hints. Barton, and others, I will redifine storage areas to get xstore. I can add more 2 or 3 3390-3 page volumes. Today there is only one volume for page and one for spool. Please keep in mind, that this is a no production z10 installed in our data center just for POC tests, so I can change definitions very very fast. I will do changes next monday and return here with results. Thanks again and Happy Easter for all!!! Carlos Bodra On Qua 20/04/11 22:52 , David Boyes dbo...@sinenomine.net sent: Check the amount of paging space you have defined for the VM system. Is this a brand new VM install right out of the box? If so, then this is most likely to be the problem. 48G of real, plus the default paging areas in a brand new VM install add up to just about 52G or so, depending on whether you used mod 3 or mod 9s. It works for MAINT because CMS is extremely memory efficient; it doesn’t require that every page in the virtual machine definition be actually present when it IPLs, and it touches only what it actually needs. Linux touches every page at some point, so you need enough paging space to support the total size of all the virtual machines you define, plus a little bit of insurance. Add at least 3-4 mod 9 or mod 27s as paging space and see if the problem goes away.

Re: RSU, PSP - which do I choose?
Sherry Order PTF UV97540 and you will got lastest RSU for z/VM 5.4. (1008) I did it eletronically and applied it a couple of days ago and a lot of PSP reported ptfs was installed. You can use Auomated Installation and Service (I never tried!) or Service Guide (I used this, since I working with VM since 1980!) Defenitly if you have a z10 machine you should apply RSU. Good luck and enjoy. Carlos Bodra IBM zSeries Certified Specialist Sao Paulo - Brazil Em 10/03/2011 12:12, Dave Jones escreveu: Hi, Sherry. Congratulations on getting z/VM 5.4 installed! If there is a higher RSU available, or if you did not receive an RSU with your order and there is now one available, you should order it and apply it when you install z/VM.” Well, since this is my first solo z/VM installation, I’m not quite sure what I should do at this point to bring it completely up-to-date prior to the migration steps. Should I: 1. Order the latest stacked RSU (and then what… start over with the installation?) 2. Order the PSP “buckets” for the three products we use whose SERVLVL is higher, and apply just that service? Suggestions? Be gentle... the expert at anything was once a beginner. :) Thanks. Sherry E.

Hello I was checking how z/vm 5.4 supports 3592-E05 (TS1120) installed into a library 3577-L5U. I have a 3592-C06 ficon attachment to connect z10 to tape drive. I can load, write, read and unload cartridge using 3577-L5U operator panel. I was unable to find out how to tell to z/vm to pick up cartridge into slot, move it to drive 1 (for example) or how to automate process to return cartridge from tape drive to slot after operation (read/write) was finished. Cartridge unload, but I need to use operator panel to move it from drive to slot library. Thanks for all comments. -- Carlos Bodra IBM zSeries Certified Specialist Sao Paulo - Brazil
Re: Z/vm 5.4 on z890 and migrated to z10 problem
If you have access to shopzseries our ibmlink(servlink) check PSP for 2098Device. If you z/vm is at 1003 level you will need to apply about 13 ptfs that isn´t included in RSU. I did this just a week ago upgrading from 0903 level running in z890 to 1003 to run in z10-BC. Now working in 2107Device for zvm 5.4 1003 and following 3592Device. A lot of fun!!! EREP dump readout for MCIC
Hi listners. I was checking erep output to try to discover more about MCIC (Machine Check Interruption Code) and found following register, but I checked 02 Erep manuals, (User´s Guide Manual and Reference Manual), but can´t found any description how to readout these little dump. We are running z/vm 4.40 over MP3000 (soon z10 BC), but until there, I need to discover what means External Damage in MCIC code. If I remember in the past, we had some manuals called Logic Manuals, but I can´t located it for Erep. If anyone can tell me where I can found documentation about these dump, I will say Thank You! ESS800 Configuration
Hi We are in process to configure some area of our 2105-800 to be used by open systems. We start process and when we try to building host access (option modify host), we got in ESS Specialist console following message: ERROR 1199 Information server problem. An unknown server error occurred. Try again. If problem persists call service representative. Service representative was called and checked out machine. No errors found. Machine is working well with Escon/Ficon adapters. We already try to do same definition a lot of times using both clusters, any kind of host (as400, RS6000, Linux z etc..) FCP and z10
Hi listners, Just to tell that we get out 2105-F20 connected to z10 BC via FCP this weekend via switch 2005-B16. Seems that we have a problem with 2105-800 that we was trying to connected earlier. We will check ESS800 to find what is wrong. Thanks for all that send tips and hints. -- Carlos Bodra IBM zSeries Certified Specialist Sao Paulo - Brazil

z10 shark 800 and FCP
Hi I´m trying to connect a z10 to a shark using FCP protocol, but without success. We did some tests that are describe below: 1 - Connect z10 to shark 800 sw2 adapter with both sides defined as Ficon. Works fine 2 - Connect z10 to shark 800 sw2 adapter with both sides defined as FCP. Direct connection, no switch envolved. Didn´t work. We aren´t able to define open system storage in ESS Specialist. Seems that shark doesn´t see FCP adapter in z10. After reading some material (redbooks) we found information about that a direct connection didn´t work. Is mandatory use a switch. 3 - Connect z10 to shark 800 sw2 adapter with both sides defined as FCP and using an old IBM 2109-S16. Didn´t work. Re: z10 shark 800 and FCP
Ray, Sorry for a not so clear definition. What happens is that we are trying to define Open System Storage in ESS800 and when we try to allocate dasd space to z10 (open space using FCP defined ports), ESS800 didn´t able to complete configuration, so I can´t define a volume inside this space. zvm was installed in eckd disks as traditional zvm does, but I´n not trying to ipl from fcp dasd yet, since I was not able to define it yet. Problem seems to be something missing in definitions or wrong sequence. As I describe in previous email, ports (at ess800 and z10) and fibre cable are ok, since if I chance ports to Ficon protocol all works fine. A question arrised now: ports are SX (shot wave) in both sides, cable could be same used for Ficon? Or FC demands a specific cable? Re: WAIT STATE
You can force a console address. In LOAD screem, type into LOADPARM field a known 3270 (local nsna) address. 1010 is a wait state code indicating a usable console could not be found. IPL VM with that address in LOADPARM. For example if your IPL volume is on address 0100 and your 3270 is at address 0200: IPL 0100 LOADPARM 0200 I never tried to put into LOADPARM sysg as console address, but this works if you get SAIPL with cons=sysg to get VM operator console into HMC Software Messages tab. Replace old BSC 3 connections
This question was cross posted into OS/390, VSE and zVM discussion lists Hello Today we have an IBM MP3000 with 04 WAC cards, 03 of them running BSC3 and on running a back-to-back vtam connection. We have a bid to replace this machine by a new z9 and get some software advantages. Today we have no problems with CPU or memory bottlenecks. Ou problem is limited to substitute access from WAC cards, so we can keep BSC3 lines sending data to application program. Simple solution could be an IBM 3745 model 170 (smalest) to keep same cenario and migrate from adapter cards to a channel independent machine, even connect thru Escon converter. IBM says no more NCP software licenses are available. What we can use as a substitute for WAC cards now how to connect this solution to z9? Thanks in advance for any comment or hint Carlos Bodra

Are you someone who has never attended WAVV, but are curious what you've been missing? (WAVV = World Alliance of VSE, VM, Linux) You may, or may not, be familiar with 'Second Life'. Within Second Life, you become immersed in a 3-D virtual world. For example, IBM has constructed a complete virtual version of the Briefing Center at the Boeblingen Lab. Using Second Life technology, we're planning to do a simultaneous broadcast of the 'IBM Update' session at WAVV. The update session generally covers a brief overview of z/VSE, z/VM, System z hardware, and Linux on System z. It begins on Saturday, May 19, at 9:00 AM Central daylight time (7:00 AM PDT, 8:00 AM MDT, 10:00 AM EDT, and 4:00 PM (16:00) Central European time). The session will last approximately one hour. . You can find instructions how to get yourself established in Second Life and where to attend the meeting on the z/VSE web site. http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zvse/ Follow the instructions (there is a PDF to download) and join those of us at WAVV - live (almost., there's a 2 minute delay). . To tell the truth, we've never done this before. As a result, there are no guarantees. If it doesn't work, we apologize. Assuming it does work, you'll be able to learn more about z/VSE, z/VM, System z hardware, and Linux on System z. You may also begin to appreciate just a fraction of what's available at WAVV. Its worth a try.
RES: NSS missing
Mary, CLEAN means clean, it deletes all files from spool and other special files as NSS and other. You should use CLEAR, that only deletes spool files but Keep intact NSS files. For a rapid recovery, since you copy Devl disks, you can use SPXTAPE and backup only NSS segments from DEVL system and then restore it in you TEST system. It's easy and fast, than restore all DEVL system again. Hi! We are installing DB2 V7.4 and have a -934 error during start up of server machine unde a z/VM 4.4 Level 0501. What sounds strange is that if we start server without saved segment support, no problems occurs. Our old data base is a SQL version 3.4, so saved segments grows a lot and we don´t know if this problem is because wrong definition of saved segments (using vmfsgmap exec) Since SQL is running in production and these saved segments have original IBM names, we did need to rename new ones. Bellow is where we put them: DB2RMGR 01400-02300 DB2ISQL 00B00-00B60 DB2SQLDS 008B0-00A2F DB2XRDS 01400-0237F DB2SP03 008B0-0237F -- This is DB Space Server machine has 128MB memory defined in directory. Since we guess that DB2 program directory is not complete about how to generated saved segments, we are trying to get some help and hints from VM-L gurus. Thanks a lot for help.
