I worry about accidents or just animals wandering like coyotes and bob cat, wild dogs, not that the coyote or bobcat would actually attack but they could scare them into a fence, bad enough, but the wild packs of dogs are nutso. I think they are missing brain cells.

Re: [IceHorses] SE Season / BOSS
what is BOSS?
Re: [IceHorses] SE Season / BOSS
Black oil sunflower seeds, touted to be good for weight gain, improved hair coat and general health. We got ours at the local feed store. Nancy thanks no, I think I will not feed sunflower seeds to any of mine! They are all heavy enough! I looked on the website for diet suggestions (to lose weight in horses) but couldn't find anything. I'd love suggestions on specific weight loss programs people have used.

[IceHorses] sad and a bit off topic
well ... after months of treating my Missouri Foxtrotter (my best and favorite riding horse), the vet has told me that I may not ever be able to ride her again. I am beside myself because while I have other riding partners... I don't have one like Molly, who I can put anyone on, I can take out anytime, alone and be safe and not have to train while riding. She has been my companion for a long time but while doing a hunter pace, she cracked a bone and has never been able to fully recover. I have not ridden her since then, I I will not unless by some miracle she shows major improvement in her x rays. So If anyone out there knows of a Foxtrotter available 14.3 to 51.1 who is a truely seasoned trail mount and who has no issues about being alone in the field or in the woods I would be interested. I know this isn't icelandic news but I love this list, I have friends on this list and I learn alot here about gait and husbandry in general so I thought I would post this here. Bia
Re: [IceHorses] sad and a bit off topic
I'm really sorry, Bia. When was her accident? the accident was last June but her procedure was this past october. I have not ridden her since June. I was hoping by now she would be showing signs of improvement, but so far she is not consistent. some good days , some not so good.

[IceHorses] treats
I don't normally feed any treat to my horses except apples and carrots. Each noght before I go to bed, I go out with a few cut up apples and 2 carrots for each horse (3 horses, 1 mule). They expect it each night! Well, it was my birthday recently and a non horsey friend came by with a gift. It was a bag of horse treats. The brand is called DUMOUR ...I guess a play on words for Do More but making them sound french??? who knows... Anyway they have molasses and a few vitamins and some other stuff (corn and some grain)... Not anything super great for them, just a sweet treat. THEY LOVE THEM! It's so funny, even I love the way they smell. As soon as they smell them they are wanting them. I bet they'd be great for training treats. Just thought I'd ramble a bit about thm. I'm amazed because they haven't ever seen treats like these before and usually my horses/mule are suspicious of new foods. Must be the molasses Bia

Re: [IceHorses] gonna kill a dog
It is disgusting. It is not the dog's fault it has irresponsible owners. Keep your aniamls better protected with fencing and cages and quit blamming the poor, homeless animals. I really hope someone turns you in to the ASPCA. Maria Maria... You really have to understand that some strays become ferrel (however you spell that) and we have no choice. Dogs have attacked my horses, killed neighbors goats and calves, killed other dogs and attacked people... once they become a ferrel pack, they are like any other wild animal that you need to protect your family and domesticated animals from. she is looking at the camera like if you laugh at me you die haha. She is too cool! and so huge! Did you cut her hair or is it short? Looks like you have a rabbit skin pouch like me :) I am s glad hazel found someone who will love her and dress her up :) Janice Janice... she has a wooly coat it's just hard to see... traditional mane on the mule is shaved down to about 1-2 inches short. I usually will let the bit just near the saddle get longer for saddle mounting but she was already shaved on the mane when I got her so it'll be awhile before it grows out. Yeah, I made that pouch! It's deerskin and rabbit fur with a little bit of wolf tail on the front as a tassel and a horn button closure. I keep a flask, cigarrettes and jerky in it! LOL! Bia

[IceHorses] speaking of bits
as you may have read I got a new mule recently. My first ride was bitless, bridleless and reinless... it was a mess... but I didn't have any bits big enough for her mouth so I just had a halter and my fiance was leading her, then I made a rein out of the lead but she broke off and bolted before I could really do anything... so, I went to a tack shop run by an old country mule man around here. He suggested a driving bit...and it worked like a charm. Hazel was as good as could be. I am very much in love! Bia
Re: [IceHorses] Thumper stold Dagur's carrot.

Subject: Re: [IceHorses] My new mule Whar a gorgeous mule. What was the breeding of her horse half? Nancy Nancy, no idea...
Re: [IceHorses] My new mule
She is BEAUTIFUL I am so fascinated by mules. Is this your first? Mary Mary...no, I had one show mule and one very very old boy in California who couldn't have made the trip east. The show mule was bought by a nice man who really liked him and felt bad about selling him but I only had enough money to bring my one foxtrotter (my favorite girl and she's been with me a long time) east with me. Bia
Re: [IceHorses] My new mule
oh wow bia, what was the breed horse in her dna?? she is gorgeous! janice-- Janice, no idea but she is very big boned without being draft as far as anyone here thinks. The mule farm really wasn't sure either. I rode her today and it was an experience. She has only been here since thursday night and she was very timid. I didn't have a bridle or bit that fit her (I do have a girth...yay!), so I used a halter and lead rope and my fiance first led me around the round pen. That went fine and so I made a rein out of the lead rope and he walked beside us down the drive, which is about 1/4 mile long so I thought it would be a nice short try. Well, she was very nervous and wanted to go back with Rod's Appy. She was so uptight that I told Rod to take the lead and stay close to her side while we walked. At the end of the drive I said, lets turn back because I could feel her tensing and Rod's Appy was going ape sh-t running around chaseing us... Rod siad don't worry honey, I've got her...LOL! famous last words I thought because he has no idea how string mules are! As soon as we turned she lurched and pulled the lead apart and started galloping back to the barn, me on her no reins, hands free...15.3 hands up in the air. She then ran into the round pen and proceeded to try to crash through the fence to get to the appy. I stayed on and when she started to push through the fence I jumped off, kind of shaken because while I have good balance, I'm a kind of a timid rider. I didn't freak or anything but I don't like that kind of thrill! LOL! I'm a bit disappointed but we are going to work on it and see how it goes. I think she is so in love with the appy because as soon as they met they bonded and since she is still unsure of her surroundings, she's nervous. On the ground she is very very calm. So maybe it will pass...or maybe not (sigh...) we'll see! Bia
Re: [IceHorses] My new mule
Can you go for a ride or walk with the appy??? or do you always ride alone? I like to ride alone sometimes so that's kind of important but next trip will be with the appy!

Re: [IceHorses] a sad thing happened to my old gelding (a bit off topic)
Think positive, Bia! We will all visualize that he is walking good, feels good, heals properly, and loves to be ridden. Judy THANKS EVERYONE for the positive thoughts. I would be a little more optimistic if he was younger but... well... I am going to think positively!!!
Re: [IceHorses] a sad thing happened to my old gelding (a bit off topic)
Poor baby...the hopeful thing is, large muscle wounds, even when deep often heal pretty well. Let's hope that happens with your gelding. Cherie Cherie... I am noticing today that he is walking a bit better. he was almost unable to walk 2 days ago. I gave him some bute that night to ease his pain...The vet doesn't want me to give him any bute because he wants me to be able to see the improvement so so far that's the only night I've given it to him... The wound looks terrible but it's draining and that's what I want...so... hopefully enough of the muscle is left to, like you say, heal properly. he lost alot of it! Amazing yes, what they can do and leave no trace or clues of what might have happened.
Re: [IceHorses] a sad thing happened to my old gelding (a bit off topic)
Oh, Bia, I'm so sorry! I hope he's better soon. Do you remember the horrible wound that our Arab had back in 2004? Karen Thomas Thanks Karen... yep, I remember that. I will keep my thoughts positive so that maybe I will at least be able to get on him for an hour in the flat pasture for some exercize. he is a real trooper... Bia
[IceHorses] a sad thing happened to my old gelding (a bit off topic)
I left the house last saturday for 3 hours to go and help some friends at their tobacco farm. When I returned I went out to feed as usual. I check my horses all the time when I'm home, mind you... I was putting the bowls down when up walk the horses and to my shock my older gelding (23 years) appeared with a basketball sized wound in his leg between his knee and shoulder in the muscle...very deep, very wide. The skin was hanging open and 1/2 the muscle was hanging out torn. The other side on his chest had a long gash as well. I dropped everything and panicked because he was walking but quivering like he was spaced out. It was a holiday weekend (figures) and I prayed the vet on call was available close by. He was. He came out and we did a 2 hour cut and sew job on him together. He is walking but I will most likely not be able to ride him again. I feel so bad for him because I rescued him, skin and bones. I hate for this to happen. I walked the pasture for an hour looking for some clues and all I can think of was that he got caught in a gate. no blood trail, no good evidence why. Sigh my poor old boy is a trooper though. Bia

[IceHorses] Coolwater Kate arrives here from Australia a bit off topic
Well, not sure if you guys remember me saying my boyfriend, soon to be husband, is Australian and in the process of selling his place to move here...anyway, he shipped his favorite riding horse here to North Carolina and she arrived today! her name is Coolwater Kate. She is an absolutely GORGEOUS leopard appaloosa mare. He raised her mother and her. She is 6 now. Her mother died a few years ago and his other horse is too old for this trip so she is going to a good home of a friend and staying put. The trip was long and HOT from Los Angeles to here. The plane ride from Australia to Los Angeles was a bit much I imagine too. She left freezing cold temps and got dropped into very hot weather but thank goodness today here is was breezy, and it rained most of the afternoon so she has been cooling down nicely. She is fiesty and upbeat and seems fine if a bit angry about the ordeal. I know she must miss her daddy very much! Everyone who took care of her during this trip was wonderful from the company who flew her, quarentine people, to the holding farm, to of course Terry of Majo Country transport. I have electrolytes in all of her water now and will give her some pro biotics tomorrow. She's been on a fairly bad diet and I'm hoping she relaxes and starts to shed tomorrow with the sunlight really on her. She has a winter coat and I'm not gonna try to shave her at this time but I will curry her and brush her as best as I can without stressing her out too much. Her dad (my boyfriend, Rod) drinks coffee with her every morning so I'm gonna try to get her to have a cup with me in the morning... she is SPOILED! and I can see already she is bratty! LOL! I'll try to send some pictures to someone on this list who knows how to put them somewhere because she is a super nice looking appy. I don't even like appaloosas! LOL!
Re: [IceHorses] Circle of Energy
judy... it is what it is... positive thinking and positive energy will attract positive energy. The secret is just a book someone wrote saying what ancient cultures already know and teach. Like the saying What goes around comes around (negative and positive)... And as in christianity the saying: do unto others as you would have them do unto you is written whatever you believe... think positively...do positive things and it will come to you in some way in the future. We all learn from being self sacrificing.
Re: [IceHorses] Brachiocephalicus
this is what it says on the link that was posted a few posts ago... Brachiocephalicus permits the neck to bend and it also moves the shoulder forward. If your horse has problems bending to the inside, massaging of these muscles will help allow a greater range of motion in the neck.

Re: [IceHorses] Naked Horse and Protection?
I have a question for you guys. Huginn is basically naked from the if it was me I'd look for a good sheet that specifically states it's UV protection rate and maybe use zinc oxide all over the shaved area but since Huginn is compromised to some extent I'd ask the vets about the zinc oxide. I use it on my healthy horse's nose all the time but Huginn's is a large area and I have no idea what it might do to an ill horse.
Re: [IceHorses] Naked Horse and Protection?
the keningston has 78% UV protection...but that may not e enough. raven yeah, maybe find one that has a higher rate ask Susan at saddle up tack she may have one

Everyone in the community helps sustain each person. It's a wonderful thing. As a side note, Judy, you have a typo on the date on the website. You wrote June instead of July for the first update. My heart is focusing on Raven and Huggin. I pray that he comes out in flying colors and is able to go on many more trail rides with Raven. Bia
[IceHorses] Huggin Update, Monday 7/2, NOT GOOD...
not sure if this got to icehorsesi got it from another list but here it is again anyway. If you already got it Judy, sorry please just edit it. I feel so terrible for Raven and Huggin. I've been trying to have all good thoughts for them and I was hoping for better news. I wonder what she can do legally to help regain some of the money but really I fear that it would be a very difficult thing to prove. All I really want is for the ordeal to be over for them. Bia The first call was the results of the scope, It showed that he has bastard Strangles... They popped/drained one abscess in his throat, they also found a suspicious spot in his belly...That was actually the good news to tell you the Truth...Because they felt that he should be able to go home on Thursday after the scope as by then he will have been on the antibiotics for 6 days... They said they wanted to do one more test to check that tummy spot before they would release him... the Vet thought he would be stable enough to go home.. He would need to be quarantined at her farm until he had 3 clean swabs... which would be about 6 weeks minimum...
Re: [IceHorses] Huginn is WORSE
I will keep them both in my heart.
Re: [IceHorses] Match making OT
well you guys, I met my fiance on Equestrian Singles... yeah I did meet a bunch of jerks too but he is really wonderful. Oprah did a show about matchmaking awhile back and Equestrian Singles was featured on that show. The other great thing about it is that I've met some great women from my area to ride with and there are events in different areas you can go to like in Vegas during National Rodeo finals and stuff like that.
Re: [IceHorses] What Gait / Tibra
Not at all. Esp. since in the case of my TWH anyway, he has a nice RW when he is relaxed, but when stressed or excited he tends to do a step pace, looser than this horse b/c I'm not in his mouth at those times. My TWH will go into a very uncomfortable pace (I think) when excited...not tense as in fearful or stressed but excited because for example other horses are running fast ahead and she doesn't want to stay behind. It's the funniest thing. But, all I have to do is lean back a little bit and put a little more pressure on the bit and she will go back into a nice comfortable gait (rack or fox trot or whatever it is that is smooth as silk) or lean forward a bit and squeeze my legs and give her rein and she will go into a nice rocking horse canter. Without a signal though... she'll do that pace and just stay in that going faster and faster until I feel like I'm riding a jackhammer. :) I can't imagine why she does that because it seems like it'd be uncomfortable for her too but she does it.
[IceHorses] help with bug bites
Hi all, I have a problem with one of my horses being very sensitive to the bites from different insects here... I'm in North carolina. Does anyone have this problem? My mare is very sensitive and gets welts from just about anything. I have been giving her a shot every 2 months which does work but I am wondering if anyone has success with summer sheets ? Do they actually keep biting bugs away or are they just to protect from the sun?...
Re: [IceHorses] hauling miss horsie-lol
Subject: RE: [IceHorses] hauling miss horsie-lol always weighs the risks before he does. I know he's passed on some horse hotels when they didn't meet his approval. That's what you're paying for. Karen Thomas Terry is the best...I have posted it before and I'll post it again... I wouldn't use anyone else unless I absolutely had to... So far 3 horses have come here via Terry and my Fiance's Appy coming from Australia will be picked up by Terry at LAX airport and brought here in July. Bia
Re: [IceHorses] Andi, Icelandic Horse, For Sale
LOL! hard to believe that sleepy looking guy refuses to load!
Re: [IceHorses] short neck
gee good question... with me and the big Foxtrotter and TWH necks/heads people are always saying I hate those big heads and look at that neck but for me it doesn't matter what a horse looks like as long as the horse is comfortable to ride. I always assumed the neck was a balanceing tool in some way for a horse and acted differently for different gaits but...essentially it was just something for people to either like or dislike esthetically. I don't happen to like that bull dog head on some quarter horses for example and I'm a real fan of a roman nosed horse... stuff like that By endurance we conquer - Ernest Shackleton
Re: [IceHorses] New farrier
I am lucky too I suppose because I have a wonderful farrier as well. I have lived in 3 different states and all 3 farriers have been great. My mode of operation is to go to 2 or 3 very high end barns and ask them who they use and for them to describe their demenor and techniques. There are a few things when/if I hear them I will automatically cross them off my list but other than those things, I will start with one and see how it goes from there giving them a chance of course. I am very forgiving myself. Anyway, first guy I tried here I gave 2 trims to see what he was like, his demeanor around the horses etc... decided to try #2 and he stuck... will stick til he's DEAD! LOL! I adore him. I let him do his job with out question. When I have a foot/leg problem, I call him, not my vet. Anyway... I think going to the high end barns (I chose barns with both gaited and non gaited horses and I chose teaching barns) is a good way to start. By endurance we conquer - Ernest Shackleton
Re: [IceHorses] New farrier
I do the mustang roll too... mainly because my horses chip easily once the weather gets dry in the toe and it helps prevent that from happening and a crack developing that could conceivably move up ward. By endurance we conquer - Ernest Shackleton
Re: [IceHorses] short neck
neck? what neck??? By endurance we conquer - Ernest Shackleton
Re: [IceHorses] short neck
well, I was kidding about no neck... his neck looks fine to me too... Bia
