If your PC cannot resolve the hostname, it might be a problem with your
DNS settings. Do a dig google.com and see that the you get some reply
from the DNS and not some error like server timeout etc.

Also try pinging 216.239.37.99 (which is google). If you have set things
correctly, it might be a problem from the ISP's end.

Which DSL connection are you using ? How is the speed and the $$ charged ?

Hi

You should also talk to your Local ISP, are they using any Proxy Server? In
case yes, ask them the relevant IP and the port and you have to specify the
same in Mozilla. The menu option is Edit-Preferences-Advanced-Proxies.
I hope this helps.

Re: [ilugd] mail relay

2004-07-14 Thread Gurinder Singh
Given that you have a host running Windows on network,
it might be infected with a 'spam' trojan. These are
little, home-made, obscure trojans that usually are
not caught by the anti-virus. These trojans keep
sending spam at regular intervals can cause obvious
problems. The solution too is obvious: Locate the
windows box that's sending these mails and then check
the processes running on it and kill the suspicious
ones. A Google search for the suspicious process can
be greatly helpful in ascertaining which files and
registry entries are to be removed to completely
banish the trojan outta your Windows machine.

Or, if your SMTP server is misconfigured someone over
the Internet might be using it to forge mails and send
them anywhere in the world. You may configure it
properly. I don't know how to do that, so can't say
anything.

2004-07-14 Thread Raj Shekhar
Hello all!
Pinky: Gee, Brain, what are we going to do on 18th of July?
Brain: The same thing we do 3rd Sunday : try to take over the world!!!
(With apologies to the two mice)

demo of the Xandros distribution. If you want to have a demo of your
favorite distribution (take the hint debian/gentoo worshipers), then do
drop in a mail.

- How does ILUGD work i.e. how the decisions are made and who is the
final authority of appeal. The discussion on societification will also
be done

- CD distribution Infrastructure update if the participants are present?
- Newbie questions and answers on OpenOffice Tricks, Email Clients
- General Process for installation, configuration of software
- Usual Free Software vs Proprietary Software discussion

* Continue down this road for several kilometers
* You will reach a circle...continue ahead
* Now you need to turn left (the first left turn after the circle) and
move for about 1km.
* You should notice a big white eSys building on your left

Forget Red Hat 8.0, even Red Hat Linux 9.0 is no longer supported by Red Hat.
So there is no point trying to use up2date for that.

Also, a Red Hat subscription now is no longer free - requires a subscription
fee, and it only supports the enterprise versions on Red Hat Linux.

To keep your system updated , consider using apt+synaptic - take a look at

jM Please help me in this criteria.
jM

to remove grub, just install another bootloader into the mbr. if you keep on
removing the 2nd hard disk which contains linux, you should try installing
XOSL bootloader into a FAT partition of the first hard disk (which contains
windows). just make sure you have grub installed in the mbr of the second
hard disk, as XOSL cant boot linux without grub/lilo.

regarding the manual selection of OS, it depends on the bootloader. for grub,
remove the timeout field from /boot/grub/grub.conf (or /boot/grub/menu.lst).
All bootloaders have this option.

making a distribution/customizing an existing distro is not very simple.
if yu want to completely customize it according to your requirements,
then try LFS (linuxfromscratch.org). otherwise if yu just need to modify
icons etc. and change the installation, then perhaps yu can look into
anaconda installer and modify the themes (e.g. for gnome yu can find
them in /usr/share/themes, /usr/share/icons and /usr/share/pixmaps)

if yu already have installed a distro and want to customize it yu can
have a look at the gnome desktop system administration guide -
http://www.gnome.org/learn/admin-guide/latest/

also, AFAIR, pcquest carried an article on how to customize a
distribution some time back. yu can try searching google, hopefully
yu'll find good help there
