TLDP[1] is a good reference point for documentation on GNU/Linux. The
guides[2]
available at TLDP are also quite good. No ideas about any printed book, though.

Hi,

In my opinion there is nothing like to learn in Linux, It`s a
Operating system that everybody use to run his/her computer.

Best way will be downlading ubuntu iso , installing it and install
applications which you use daily, There are nearly all software
alternative available on linux.

If you can`t find some alternative, Post your queries on mailing list.

I'm not starting any distro-war here but mentioning download any Linux

Hi,

I am glad you want to learn.
what i always suggest to people:
 1) go to a book shop
 2) collect some books on 'Linux' you find 'attractive'
 3) open those books, try to read a few pages
 4) choose a book you find easy to understand and appeals to you senses.

I have a lovely book, though a bit old, you might like to have a look
at:
A Practical Guide to Linux
by Mark G. Sobell
published by Addison-Wesley.

and there are always millions of other linux users who will gladly help
you with any queries.

hope you learn quickly,

Please do not purchase this book , I do not suggest this book,,
for a beginner of Linux , book should contain

* Part 1
** How to install Linux
* Part 2
** How to use Linux
Basics of command (no need for deep learning of vi , shell and other
stuff)
 Office Use
 Productivity usage
Handon with GUI (KDF , GNOME)

I would better suggest like
** If you are going to use Fedora /Ubuntu
*** go for any of these Complete reference type of book

I have seen many Incomplete user/learner who easily get frustrated with
linux just because they do not know how to learn it,

Normally user install linux box and join some forum and start asking each
and every silly doubts on forums or otherwise they will waste time and
internet bandwidth to search on many useless forum and fix it. many newbies
do not know what exactly is the problem or how to describe problem ,, --
they only say this is not working,,

(I am not saying these are bad habbit, But i am advising new bies to spend
money on book and trainig first.)

i have seen that nobody will make a effort will to read books or join
coaching.
dude everything is available in books and very systematically,

unlike BUS or AUTO, Linux is a horse or Yamaha bike, you need to learn it
first. just like ABCD. Best way to get some training from any linux center.

Install Linux,. get good books, and if possible join training or some
certification,
also attend workshops and bring your doubts ,,

True. People never joined a training program or purchased books for their
darker days with Windhus...so why Linux. Also, gone are the days of
Slackware when it used to take 6 hours to just listen to your first song.
Today, it's a matter of minutes to get a linux system up and to start
working on that presentation you have to give the next day.

Best way will be downlading ubuntu iso , installing it and install

Although, this list tries hard to keep itself from any bias, however I don't
think mentioning a distro is that bad. If somebody from Ireland asks you
about a good Mughlai restaurant he would like to go and try, you don't start
explaining him how an ideal mughlai restaurant should be and tell him to go
and find one similar to your description. Rather, after your short lecture
on mughlai you recommend him a restaurant he can go and try. So, personally
i don't think recommending distro's is bad. Ofcourse, those recommendations
have to be backed by convincing reasons which was visibly missing here. But
i believe given a chance Mr. Mishra will present his reasons.

If you can`t find some alternative, Post your queries on mailing list.

Always, welcome...but do google before posting.

[ilugd] Any experiences with Acer Aspire One?

2008-08-27 Thread Vikas Rawal
Acer has recently introduced in India a sub-notebook pre-loaded with Linux
(a fedora-based distribution called Linpus lite). The machine runs on an
Intel Atom processor, has 1 gig RAM, 120 GB HDD and an 8.9 screen.

I am considering picking up a piece but would be interested if anyone has
any experience to share. Or any feedback on Intel Atom processors?

The reviews of Intel Atom processors on the internet show very poor
processing performance though they do well in terms of power consumption.
Any comments?

[ilugd] Buying a laptop, suggestions

2008-08-27 Thread Raj Mathur
Hi,

After 3 stalwart years of service my IBM notebook has finally decided to
give up the ghost, and I'm on the lookout for a new one. Within those
3 years I realised that my use of the notebook was intermittent at
best, so don't plan to spend that much on the new box. Currently
looking at the Compaq Presario C797VU (~Rs 35K):
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/in/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3329742-89318-89318-3466274-3739779.html

In a nutshell, it's a Core2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, widescreen (ugh!) 1280x800
resolution (ugh!), 160GB disk, standard WiFi, Ethernet, DVD writer,
card reader, etc.

Oh, and it comes with FreeDOS installed -- no Winduhs tax.

Anyone have any experience good/bad/ugly with this machine? Any other
recommendations?

PS: I know most of people do not follow email niceties (mostly they
are not aware) but if you follow bottom post/in-line post style of
email conversations it becomes a whole lot easier to carry on
meaningful dialogue and you can snip out what is not meaningful too.
Most people just hit reply button and top post leaving prior message
appended uselessly at bottom. See if you can adopt this style and
persuade others. In case you are already doing this . great,
spread the message.

Can't comment on the above model but my brother owns a 2 yr old Compaq
laptop no hardware issues so far. On the Linux side, not been able to
get the ATI 200M express 3D working (with binary blob). WiFi is
Broadcom. Works with Ubuntu 8.04.

If all devices are based off Intel chipset, chances are very high
everything will work out of box with latest release of Linux distros.

Oh, and it comes with FreeDOS installed -- no Winduhs tax.

35K seems to be a bit high given no M$ tax.

Anyone have any experience good/bad/ugly with this machine? Any

If your use is intermittent and not heavy duty work, then I suggest the
netbooks - lighter and more mobility. The price points likely to drop
after Sep/Oct when more brands come into the market. The new ASUS
eeePC is @ 32K with XP Home tax.

What is your experience with the speed? Reviews of Intel Atom seem very
poor. My concern was about how the computer would cope with multiple
applications running simultaneously. What may happen if one started a linux
distro and virtual box on it to run another OS?

The price in India is Rs 21000 for the linux model which is indeed very
attractive.

The TechSpecs state that it is a IntelPro 3945ABG - so should be good to
go on all distributions. To be absolutely sure - you might want to use a
LiveUSB to boot it up :)

And thanks for pointing this hardware, was planning to get a laptop

I have had mine for about 10 days. Overall I like the machine for my
purposes. The battery lasts about 2 1/2 hours, the screen is awesome,
not a bit of problems connecting with the internet. I also have used
my Verizon modem on the machine and it works just fine. I use
Outlook 2003 and Open Office on it without any problems.

Have you tried booting any Linux LiveCD on this machine? Pls. share
your Linux experience i.e. WiFi, modem.

Except for the battery life, I really like the machine. Since the
price for this model has dropped to $349 I think it is a steal.

Where did you buy this machine @ above price?

I don't have a netbook. I am using an Intel D945GCLF mobo. It ships
with an integrated Atom 230 (1.6GHz), single DDR2 DIMM (max. 2GB), on
board video and sound etc. I have a 2GB RAM config. You can get a
decent config. for under 6K if you assemble it yourself.

Loaded up Ubuntu 8.04.1 and openSUSE 11.0, all devices worked out of
box. Desktop performance was decent - I did not notice any
sluggishnes. IMO, for regular desktop usage (openoffice, browsing,
email) it is a good fit.

Re: [ilugd] Buying a laptop, suggestions

2008-08-27 Thread Vikas Rawal

 Regards,

Over the last two months I have had terrible time with HP service in Delhi
and am tempted to warn against going for HP. I have had two HP/Compaq
laptops so far and my experience has been that they are not tough machines.
The likelihood of breakdown is high after the first year. If the machine
carries a standard one year warranty, the repair costs can be absurdly high.

In particular, after the recent reorganisation of their service system, it
sucks. The whole thing is not subcontracted to various companies all over
Delhi. The service centre in South Delhi (Okhla II) is manned by a company
called RT. My laptop had a problem with the display and the keyboard. In
June they told me that the motherboard was faulty and replaced it for Rs.
12K with a warranty of 3 months. After about two months, the same problem
happened again, and now I am told the display panel is gone. It beats me how
on earth could the keyboard be affected if the panel is gone. But then there
is no arguing with these fellows.

Last time I kept wondering if they changed the motherboard at all. There was
no way of verifying it. It certainly felt like they charged me 12K and just
tightened some loose connections.

I have had to basically give up on the machine which leaves me in the same
boat as Raj and Shankarshan - looking out for a new laptop. Except that, no
HP for me. Have had enough with them.

Also, I would like a smaller sized machine. I am considering a Dell Vostro
1200 or perhaps even an Acer Aspire One. I have sent a separate mail on Acer
Aspire One.

Sorry for the typo. It should have been:

[ilugd] Need Suggestion about Network Monitoring software - Open source/Free

2008-08-27 Thread Hakuna Matata
Hello All,

we want to implement a network monitoring software in our organization.

we want to monitor services like ftp/web/mysql/mssql/vmware and
performance and up time of servers.

i want the software to be more reports oriented so that i can present
them to the management guys.

I did some goggling and found the below software.

1. GroundWork Open Source IT Monitoring and Network Monitoring Software
   www.groundworkopensource.com/
2. Nagios - Network Monitoring Software
  www.nagios.org/
3.Zenoss Home - Commercial Open Source Network, Systems
   www.zenoss.com
4. IPTraf - An IP Network Monitor
iptraf.seul.org/
5. http://www.opennms.org/index.php/Main_Page
6.http://www.zabbix.com/
7.http://www.odcnms.org/
8.http://www.zenoss.com/

By first glance on the websites it looks like Zabbix/Zenoss/Groundwork
have very good reporting features. Reporting is curicial part for me
as we are are thinking of replacing SiteScope as our current
monitoring system.

Please advise if someone in the list have some suggestions.

Many thanks in advance.

Best Regards
