ISPunity can be used by individuals or SME or Enterprises.

Good job indeed, though a dependency on ruby seems to be an overkill to
me; IMHO, all system level or command line tools, scripts and, or
utilities should be light weight, whereas your ISPUnity thing is far
from K.I.S.S. and, or Unix philosophy.

BTW, did not you bother to look at what's already available on the
 Internet?

I'm sure there are many such apps/distros/solutions available.
We've been using m0n0wall and pfSense (both freeBSD based) for a long time now
and Vyatta more recently.
It would be a shame to belittle Arun's efforts by suggesting that he is
re-inventing  the wheel.

Any what to do?

Check if you've done the following :-
a) Copy the source tree from CD to your home directory (or some similar place;)
b) run the configure script (./configure typically should setup the development
environment for the compiler/linker etc)
c) if no errors, type `make` else install dependencies that configure
complained about
d) if no errors, type `make install`
e) if you get errors now, then you need to contact the developer(s)/dive
deeper/trawl the support forum for the solution

Hello All:

Does anyone have any experience building one and are there any
recommendations regarding components that are available in India?

I prefer not to buy one as it  costs over Rs. 45k and given that 1 TB
harddrive costs about 3.5K I feel that I should be able to build one at the
fraction of the cost, and offcourse learn from the experience. Thanks

you could build a tinyNAS appliance like this -
http://www.applianceshop.eu/index.php/opnnas-freenas-usb.html
and use freeNAS - http://freenas.org/features

you could buy an ALIX or even a Soekris net5501 online and get it shipped with
the whole thing costing around $300

Re: [ilugd] Web-based LDAP management on Debian

2011-05-08 Thread Shiv

From: Sirtaj Singh Kang sir...@sirtaj.net

Hi all,

I am looking for a web-based frontend to manage an LDAP-based user and host
database. There are a lot of options out there, but ideally:

1. It should come prepackaged on debian and be well-maintained and up to date.
2. Shouldn't be a MANAGE EVERYTHING front-end - I'd like to maintain focus on
LDAP.
3. It should support all the basic Linux schemas so that users can be set up
to log in via ssh etc.

Hi,

Some questions...
a) Is the destination directory the same as when you run it from terminal
b) How frequently does the cron script run?
c) Is the destination actually running out of space?
d) Are you just adding files or overwriting them?

What are the good cyber-cafe management packages available? I've
looked at a few (OutKast, CyberOrg, OpenKiosk) but they all seem to
 be lacking some features.

You can look at monowall (www.m0n0.ch/wall) which has a captive portal
built-in and can do most of what you want at the gateway rather than at
the PCs themselves.
You can also make one yourself with a combination of
Chillispot+phpmyPrepaid+FreeRadius. Check out my blog on how to achieve
this.

Hi,

Ive finally managed to connect to the internet successfully using a Reliance
ZTE AC 8710 USB Evdo Modem both in Jaunty as well as Intrepid;the only
difference being that the usbserial module is built into the kernel in the
former. The usb_modeswitch program was especially helpful in making the card
switch from mass storage mode to modem. Im getting throughputs of 500Kbps in

Hi,
The Wii is not officially launched in India. It is available in the Grey
Market. In gurgaon, Toy Kingdom in DLF Phase-I shopping mall sells it for
around Rs 20,000. You can also pick it up through Ebay india.

I am mainly interested in its remote part -- WIIMOTE , can
 be buy it
 separately,,,
 system , do we
need only remote part or full accessories.

The remote by itself is of little use. You would need the complete system as
the remote communicates to the main console via a motion sensor that is
generally mounted on top of the TV.

IMHO, it is not a low-cost device.

Re: [ilugd] Unable to login to Airtel modem admin interface

2008-08-13 Thread Shiv
I am still unable to connect to the admin
interface. But as before I am able to access the internet.
Most DSL modems and Wi-Fi routers come with a factory default IP address of
192.168.1.1
So when you try to connect to 192.168.1.1 with both of them in the network, the
behavior is unpredictable (unless you changed the wireless router's IP address
to some other subnet).
As a process of elimination,
I would suggest that you connect directly to the DSL modem from your laptop
using a patch cord (Ethernet cable) and then try connecting to the Admin
interface. you should also check to see that the DSL modem has issued you an ip
address in the same range (192.168.1.x) . If this is not so, then you can
safely assume that the IP address of your DSL modem is not 192.168.1.1 and it
is generally the first ip in whatever subnet it has issued you an iP from
(again the assumption here is that whoever changed the IP followed the same
logic).

Other things to check:-
a) Port number of admin interface might be non-default (i.e 81 instead of 80)
b) running wireshark (ethereal) when you try to connect might throw up some
more info in the captured data.

Also, as an afterthough, what OS/Browser are you using on the Laptop?

Subject: [ilugd] Unable to login to Airtel modem admin interface
I tried to login to the admin interface at 192.168.1.1 from my
laptop(wireless) but i get connection reset error page everytime. What could
the problem be?

Are you able to login when you connect your laptop directly to the DSL modem
using ethernet?

Also, is the Wi-Fi access point acting as a NATted router? why are you on a
different network (192.168.0.x) than your DSL modem (192.168.1.x)? Double
NATting is not recommended under most cases.

You could disable DHCP from the Wi-FI AP (or router) and connect the LAN part
of the DSL modem to the LAN part of the Wi-Fi AP (or Router). This way, the
AP will act as a bridge and just forward all DHCP requests to the DSL modem.

chinese phones? and...do i ask for a dual mode, wifi
 enabled phone or is
there some other 'market term' for them?

navjot,
i got mine from hong kong (ordered it online) from a company called vanaccess.
In delhi, your best bet is to go to gaffar market in karol bagh. i am not sure
what to ask for; you could ask for a phone with wi-fi.

I presume you connected the E-Series phone on a local
 Wireless
Ethernet connection? Is it any E-Series phone? What was the
 specific

Hi,
I can second that fact. I have been using Fring on an E65, and have been able
to connect to Skype, Asterisk based SIP server sitting at home, Freeworld
dialup server.
Also,
I have been able to connect using a cheap Chinese dual-mode (wifi+gsm) phone to
a SIP server and wifi

Bottomline:
It really shouldnt matter so long as the client and server devices speak the
same protocol (SIP or Skype proprietary)

Assuming that this is not a cutpaste job from the website, I'm not sure this
is of any great relevance to the issue at hand viz. How to get there :)

If I remember correctly:-
1.Drive towards Noida via the Nizamuddin Bridge (not the DND flyway)
2. At Noida Mor, continue straight on NH-24 highway (this is called Hapur
highway by some)
3. At UP Border (after you cross Ghazipur traffi signal), turn left
4. After the third traffic signal (you would have crossed Dabur,Bhushan Steel
Strips and BEL Ghaziabad), turn left you should see IP college on your right.

Hi,
If you want to remain subscribed but not get the emails, just mark one of the
ilug mails as Spam or Junk (depending upon your email client). This way each
mail that you receive from ilugd will get silently pushed off to the Junk
folder.

The more difficult way is to find out how to unsubscribe from a mailing list.
At times its as complex as sending a blank email with Unsubscribe in the

[ilugd] Candidate for Hall Of Shame?

2008-04-22 Thread Shiv
Hi,
I was not able to access netbanking on ABN Amro Bank's website using Firefox on
Ubuntu.
When I wrote to them, this is the reply I got:-
Dear Mr. Jagannath,

This is with reference to your email dated
April 20, 2008. At the outset we would like to thank you for the time taken
and effort made by you in sharing your concerns with us.

We wish to inform you that currently you
will not be able to access our Net banking service through Mozilla and
Linux browser. However to access our Net banking services we recommend
Internet explorer browser version to be 5.5 and 6 and we would also request
you to kindly check if your Internet Explorer browser is configured for
JAVA applet.

Are they ideal candidates for inclusion into the Hall Of Shame? Also how do we
ensure that they comply with other browsers?

Hi,
I havent seen a Reliance WiMax connection yet, but from all the WiMax

be a router which will have an Ethernet out. All you need to do is plug it into
your access point or PC. It really doesnt matter whether it is a Liunx or

arcane as providing a Windoze Vista Premium based dialer!!!

[ilugd] Sound barely working in Gutsy (Ubuntu 7.10)

2008-04-03 Thread Shiv
Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop with an Intel HDA card and Realtek

I have Fiesty installed for some time now and sound works just fine.
On a whim, I installed Gutsy the other day on a spare partition and found that
the sound is very feeble.
Trawled around in Ubuntuforums and found that this is a known issue with Gutsy
and though tried recompiling reinstalling the alsa drivers, nothing helped.
Just wondering if anyone one the list can throw some light or should I just
wait for HardyHeron??

Yes. Students are allowed to burn one copy and use the educational

share it though.

Hi,
Were the Students allowed to modify the products or make enhancements by making
changes in the source code so generously provided by Micro$oft, and then
redistributing them?
If the answer to that is in the negative, then this discussion is pointless.
Open Source means exactly that. So giving away a Closed Source product for
free doesnt exactly mean the same thing; moreover Free in FOSS isnt Free as

Just wondering if anyone else knows about this / has seen this before. I
am on the bsnl broadband network at the moment, and there seems to be a
definite block on the VoIP ports inbound.

is this something that bsnl publicly accepts ?
Hi,
This is probably an indication that BSNL (like MTNL who have launched) is on
the verge of launching their own VOIP service and dont want us to use any other
provider.

Hi,
Easier way is to use the wireless routers as Access points (dont connect the
wan interface to the switch, just connect one of the 4 lan ports to the
switch). If your internet is through a DHCP-server capable device (like a DSL
router) just use that to serve DHCP addresses to all the PCs. You can also use
an old PC with monowall or pfsense to act as the firewall/gateway etc.
This way all your computers will be on the same LAN segment.

What non ATI based laptop do you plan on getting that will give you this sort

Dunno, need to hunt..

btw, I also have a intel core2 - i945 based laptop and i wont bother

[ilugd] Wierd Issue with OpenProj Beryl on Ubuntu

2007-08-24 Thread Shiv
Hi,

I have Ubuntu 7.04 (with latest updates) installed on my laptop.
Also have Beryl running as eye-candy on gnome-xgl.
I have recently installed OpenProj (www.projity.com). When I launch OpenProj, I
just get a blank gray window.
When I log out and re-login with the session changed to Gnome only (no xgl) and
then launch OpenProj, I am able to see the complete interface, interact and so
on.
Has anyone faced a similar prob with any other application?
I have also noticed that I am not able to launch Google Earth when Gnome-xgl is
the current session.
It only comes up when i go back to plain ole gnome and metacity.
