I use a firewire (IEEE 1394) to transfer my movies to my comp. (but thats still
on windows). It gives me a raw AVI which i can encode to DivX or whatever.

Hi Vikram,
By that, Kapil meant using zero sized files as locks, implemented as:

 When ever the program starts
. look for a particular file (say one.lock) in a particular location (say /tmp)
. if it exists, it implies the software is already in use
. if it doesn't, implies this is the first instance
. create the predefined lock file (0 bytes) at the predefined location
. while exiting the program, remove this lock file.

So, in effect, the existance of the file implies whether the software is in use
or not and you can take a decision based on that (may be abort loading another
instance)

Hi Venky,
KDE runs on cygwin/X. You can either install cygwin/Xfree and additional
packages for KDE OR you also get direct KDE+cygwin packaged installers. It
requires a lot of ram, i'd say something like 256MB. Look for resources on the
net, google for Cygwin/xfree ports, and check out
kde-cygwin.sourceforge.net/kde3/installation.php

I understand the concept of spamming via direct to mx mailing, but what i wanted
to point out was that for an end user, you fail (using ISP OR any III party SMTP
server) in case the opposite domain runs a reverse DNS on you.
My point wasn't related to the original post, I was just trying to figure out
the drawbacks of using some other SMTP server other than justifiably your own
(the one indicated by your MX record).
Yeah, i think it was everybody's dream that each SMTP server be able to relay
for everybody, but then we had spam. And it would be a better idea to stick to
your own (MX) servers for relaying your mail. If this were strictly followed
along with reverse DNS lookup, there'd be less spamming (not perfecty zero
though). This, along with what you mentioned about the SMTP server being able to
detect bulk mailings, we could achieve good sterilisation.
Though this may not always be possible, logistics or otherwise, then, as "Mary"
pointed out in another thread (or was it this thread), the use of spf records.
They would surely be a good step in fighting spam.
Also, i feel every self respecting SMTP server should run a reverse DNS and make
use of RBL lists till there is definitive way to fight spam.

Sandip,
I think the only drawback of Direct-to-mx mailing is that reverse DNS lookups
would fail and mail server which have been set to perform that before accepting
mail would throw you out. But you face the same wall when you use VSNL/III party
mails server to relay mail for your domain. Pardon my ignorance, could you
explain why direct-to-mx mailing is stongly discouraged?

[ilugd] Grub help

2004-07-26 Thread Jasmeet
Hi all,
I finally decided to move to grub, but it seems the trip is not easy. I tried
installing grub using the shell from the grub boot floppy (just so that disk is
not mounted). I have two HDDs, with the second one dedicated to flavors of linux
and its the first parition on the second HDD that i want to install grub on. So
i ran
grub> root (hd1,0)
grub> setup (hd1,0)
 Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
 Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... yes
 Checking if "/grub/stage2" exists... yes
 Checking if "/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd1,0)"... failed (this is not fatal)
Running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd1,0)"... failed (this is not fatal)
 Running "install /grub/stage1 d (hd1,0) /grub/stage2 p /grub/grub.conf
"...succeeded

Though "install" says its succeeded, but while booting it just hangs with the
word "GRUB" on top of the blank screen (and at times some high pitched music
blaring from the speaker). I guess there is more to the embed command than that.
Also when i run the embed command alone with the parameters as above, i get
error 12: invalid device requested, which doesn;t seem to be much help too. Does
anyone have any pointers about whats going wrong here?

-js
PS. installing grub while installing RH9 works fine for the same partition.

1. boot into rescue mode
2a. let linux autodetect the partitions and mount them for you
OR
2b. if it doesn;t do that, mount them your self. Be sure to mount /boot and /
atleast
3. chroot to the mounted root file system.
4a. update the grub.conf or lilo.conf, run lilo
OR
4b. if you like windows boot loader, strip the first 512 bytes off the /boot and
add them as a file to windows boot loader.

basically, the rescue mode allows you access to the existing partitions and
chroot changes your / mount. And its not necessary to use the same linux CDs for
rescue, any (that can run in rescue mode) would do :)

[ilugd] PCQLinux and Sound

2004-04-15 Thread jasmeet
Guys,
I recall LL and some others having some problem with sound on the latest
PCQlinux. I got myself a copy and tried out for myself. The sound on kernel 2.4
works fine, but was giving me problems on 2.6. So i decided to fix it.
I downloaded the latest alsa drivers, compiled them on 2.4 and got it working
with OSS emulation. Since i was going to use the 2.6 kernel also on the same
box ( and i didn't want to tweak my /etc/modules.conf), i thought of compiling
alsa as modules on 2.6 kernel too. But the 2.6 kernel comes with alsa support
in the kernel itself. Luckily the PCQ guys haven't enabled that in the kernel
that they shipped (by looking at the accompanying /boot/config-2.6...). So i
compiled the alsa as modules for the 2.6 kernel as well (with oss emulation
again) and got it working there too.
So now as i have it, i have got alsa as modules for 2.4 and 2.6 and the
same /etc/modules.conf and sound works with both the kernels.
I am more of a compiling person so i compiled everything from source, but i
guess the RPMs can work as well. I am not sure about the 5.1 thingie, i believe
LL would be able to confirm that.
Also, i have no ideas why sound wasn't working earlier, i just used my fix :)
 Hope this helps.

Flashget is able to get u that much speed, cos of the multithreaded download

Wget or kget download on a single thread which limits the speed.

People were discussing something similar over the last few threads, try

[ilugd] Audi uses Linux

2004-02-09 Thread Jasmeet
http://www.networkcomputing.com/showitem.jhtml?articleID=17501943

...
At times, Linux seems almost like a religion: Either you believe or you
don't. Soon, true believers who are in the market for cars may feel inclined
to buy Audis as a demonstration of their faith. That's because the German
automaker is using a cluster of Linux-on-Intel systems to simulate parts and
design factory tooling for its next-generation chassis. Audi replaced an
eight-processor, RISC-based system from Hewlett-Packard that was running
HP-UX and coming off a three-year lease.

[ilugd] Re: help on ssh

2004-02-05 Thread Jasmeet
Hi,
It goes like this.
You want alice (user 1) to login automatically from neptune (machine 1)
to pluto (machine 2) under the security of jenny (user 2).
1. login into neptune as alice.
2. type 'ssh-keygen -t dsa'
3. answer all the questions sensibly, remember the location where you store
the keys.
4. after ssh-keygen as finished, goto the folder where you stored the
generated keys.
5. there are two parts to the key, (if you chose default in step 3 ) id_dsa
and id_dsa.pub (id_dsa is your private key, id_dsa.pub is the public key)
6. copy id_dsa.pub to pluto and copy it folder .ssh (notice the dot) under
jenny's home folder as authorized_keys2, if authorized_keys2 already exists,
append the contents of id_dsa.pub to that file. i.e. cat id_dsa.pub >
/home/jenny/.ssh/authorized_keys2
7. now try logging into pluto as jenny from alice's account on neptune (
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] )
this should throw you in without asking for password.

what basically happened was that we generated a key for alice and added
alice's public key to jenny's authorized_keys2 file.

I hope this helps. You can experiment more by using different kinds of keys
of different strengths, etc. ..

[ilugd] how to capture still from a movie?

2003-12-03 Thread Jasmeet
Hi all,
The problem goes like this, i have a movie and i want to capture one
of the scenes (a still image). I tried using ImageMajik, but i guess
since mplayer directly writes to the VDO buffer, the image is not
visible, rather just a blank screen. Tried the same thing on a windows
machine too using "Print Screen" button, but the same thing, Windows
Media player shows up with a blank screen.
Any pointers on how to achieve what i want? The movie is in mpeg
format.

2003-11-18 Thread Jasmeet
have been having some similar problems myself. I stopped all the NFS
related services (nfs + portmap, etc. ) and then started portmap before
starting NFS. It seems to work most of the time, and the times it
didn't, i restarted the boxes (both client and server) and then mounted
the NFS share again (not using /etc/fstab). I encountered this when i
was actually "playing" around with NFS and creating and removing shares
indiscriminately, stopping and starting services erratically, etc.
Couldn't find the real reason, i guess NFS is really sensitive to
restarts and the "order" of restarts. Would be interested in case you
can point out something. :)

I want it to be shown in the left pane as well. Right now i have to

[ilugd] Re: qmail in FreeBSD

2003-10-19 Thread Jasmeet
:allow allows any client to connect to your server. You have to set the
RELAYCLIENT environment variable so that the client is able to relay
though your server. If RELAYCLIENT is not set, the client would still be
able to connect but would not be able to relay. But if there is no
:allow entry for the client, the connection itself would be rejected.

In case the connection is rejected, it could either be the entry in the
rules, specifically denying the subnet OR a firewall that prvevents
anyone from connecting to your machine on the desired ports.

You better check the firewall.

$ This is scary stuff.

$ http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
$
$ [follow link at bottom of this mail to get more details...]
$
$ [Knoppix] Closed because of "Software-Patents"
$
$ In the next few days, the European Parliament will decide
$ about the legalisation and adoption of so-called "software
$ patents" in Europe, which are already used by large companies
$ in other countries to put competitors out of business. This
$ can lead to the termination of many software projects such as
$ KNOPPIX, at least within Europe, because the holders of the
$ over 30,000 already granted "software patents" (currently
$ without a legal foundation) can claim exclusive rights and
$ collect license fees for trivial things like "progress bars",
$ "mouseclicks on online order forms", "scrolling within a
$ window" and similar. That way, software developers will have
$ to pay the "software-patentholders" for using these features,
$ even in their own, completely self-developed applications,
$ which can completely stall the development of innovative
$ software for small and medium companies. Apart from this, the
$ expense for patent inquiries and legal assistence is high,
$ for even trying to find out if the self-developed software is
$ possibly violating "software-patents", if you want to
$ continue to market your software. Contrary to real patents,
$ "software-patents" are, in the current draft, monopolization
$ of business ideas and methods, even without any tangible
$ technical implementation.
$
$ More about the current major problem at

Two things
1. Before starting the installtion process, verify that the media is

run that.

RE: [ilugd] unable to export display ??

2003-08-21 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
I don't think you'll be able to do this just from telnet. Use X in query
mode as:
On server:
1. Enable XDMCP (editing /etc/X11/xdm/xdm.conf or gdm.conf, whichever
applicable)
2. restart GDM/XDM/KDM as applicable

One client:
1. stop your own Xwindow, using init 3
2. Log into the console, and type "X -query ".

This would open a X Session to the server and you'll abe to login and
run any X app. Using this method, one gets a whole alternate X Window
session (right from the login screen) and not just one app from the
server, I am not sure how to get that. There are some how to's that may
help.

Damn clear, thanx :)

-js
$ Yes you can. However, once you have sold the package (and
$ the source, of course) to one person, s/he can further resell
$ it, give it away, or do whatever s/he pleases with it, so
$ it's slightly difficult to make more than one sale of a GPL package.
$
$
$ It depends on what enhancements they made and what the
$ original license of LVS was. If LVS was GPL and RH added
$ code to the original code base to enhance it, then yes, they
$ must provide you with source if you buy the binaries (if you
$ do, pass on a copy here ;) OTOH if RH only added extra
$ functionality as a separate program on top of LVS, or if LVS
$ wasn't GPL in the first place, then RH is under no obligation
$ to give you the source.

RE: [ilugd] GPL ?

Some more doubts :)
$ You are only obliged to reveal the source to
$ the people you give the binaries of your program to -- not
$ the original author, not any `community'. However, you have
$ to distribute the source under the GPL itself, so the
$ recipients are free to disseminate your source more widely if
$ they choose.

1. Does it talk anywhere about making the binaries/source code available
for FREE ? Can I sell the rework ? (assuming I used GPL'ed code).

2. Redhat says "IP Load Balancing (Piranha) is based on Open Source
Linux Virtual Server (LVS) technology, with significant Red Hat
enhancements". Since LVS is open source and licenced under GPL, does it
mean that I can ask Redhat for the source code of piranha if I buy
redhat AS edition and then make it available for free ??

$ Re point 3, I doubt if anyone would sue you for
$ `look-and-feel' if you made, e.g., a clone of Konqueror :)

[ilugd] GPL ?

2003-08-20 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
Hi,
I am not pretty sure I've understood the GPL license, Could some one
clarify some of my doubts :
1. If I create a new software which which is based (has the same code
base with some additions) on a GPL'ed software ( with open source) as a
part of it, so do I need to make my software too GPL'ed / open source ?
Do I have to reveal the source code JUST to the author of the original
software or to the whoel community ? Do I have to give it away for free
?
2. How does the scenario in point one above change if my software has
the GPL'ed software one of the many features my software supports ? (In
this case too the code used is the same as for the GPL'ed software)
3. How does the scenaio in point one above change if only the concept or
the idea is from a GPL'ed software and the implimentation has be coded
from scratch by myself ?

This confusion is cos of a couple of things coming up :
. Tridia recently added a file transfer feature to the tradional VNC
amongst other things and they sell the licence for the pro version.
. Redhat has a load balancing solution that comes with the AS version
which is based on lvs and they charge for it.

Would someone be able to clarify ..

POP, SMTP and other such protocols are text based without any
encryption. Anyone sitting on the gateway can go on sniffing passwords.
Till about some years back, even yahoo messenger had its passwords sent
out in clear text !! An alternative could be using POP over SSL but the
provider needs to support this. Also you could use POP over an SSH
connection but for that too you need to have sshd on the server. There
are other options like APOP, KPOP and IMAP, try these out.

[ilugd] Debian CDs ?

2003-08-14 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
Hi all,
Debian has seven ISO files for download ! Does anyone have any
idea as to which ones should be downloaded ? I could figure out this
much CD's 2 through 5 will each boot a different "flavor" depending on
which CD-ROM is inserted.

CD 1 Allows a selection of kernel images to boot from (the idepci flavor
is the default if no selection is made). CD 2 Boots the 'vanilla'
flavor. CD 3 Boots the 'compact' flavor. CD 4 Boots the 'idepci' flavor.
CD 5 Boots the 'bf2.4' flavor.

Q) Any ideas on what CD 6 - 7 - 8 contain ?
Q) Does anyone have Debian 3.0r1 ?

users, please shed some light on the topic, I have a couple of server
apps (J2EE based), we've already tried Redhat, will Debian make a
difference ?

[ilugd] Request for talks

2003-07-31 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
Is there a possibility of a volunteer agreeing to speak on a subject on
which a lot of people want a talk on ? It works this way:
1. Someone asks for a talk on some topic.
2. People second it.
3. Someone volunteers to give a speech on that.

Advantages:
1. This way we wouldn't have to think about which topic to chat on.
2. Since the talk would be on a topic which interests more than a couple
of person, it can be documented. This documentation can be put up on our
site and we can have our own Delhi LUG Documentation Project :). This
can be a good source of reference for newbies.
3. Increasing attendance: since the people who requested the talk would
anyways be present.

This system can be extended to work through the website, so people can
request for topics online, sending a mail to the group.

If its worthwhile to follow, I have a topic I'd like somebody to talk on
: High availability clusters ..

So Supreet and I have been slogging our collective a** off working at a
client's location (no names just yet), trying to migrate his 5000 users
to Samba from a Winduhs file server.

Some experiences...

Client has 8 locations, including numerous factories, spread over the
country. Were using NT for domain control as well as file and print
services (FPS). MS got into the act, convinced them about the joys of
Winduhs 2003 and got their domain controllers (DCs) upgraded to W2K3. In
the meantime we'd already done most of the work to switch the FPS from
NT to Linux.

At the last minute (nearly) client comes to us and asks, ``Can you work
with a W2K3 domain controller?''. Being the blithe spirits that we are,
we searched the web, found some pointers that seemed to vaguely indicate
the possibility of a chance of there being some items that could portend
the peaceful co-existence of Samba and W2K3, and gave him the reply in
one word, `Yes!'.

Problem with W2K3 is that it only supports active directory (AD) and
none of the older methods of authentication (whatever they are -- /me is
no Winduhs expert). So we need a Samba that is AD aware. Lo and
behold, Samba 3.0.0 (currently in final Beta) is AD aware, and
Google-ification yields a few HOWTOs on how to get the two working
together.

OK, problem (1) solved. As long as /someone/ has got it working, we
should be able to too, right? I mean, what're mailing lists, IRC
channels, friends and AK-47s for if not to get you assistance with
making Samba work with AD? Download, compile, test, scream, tear out
hair, kill w2k3 admin because he can't properly set the one goddam
registry entry that we need, find another w2k3 admin, recompile, retest,
etc... you know the routine. Finally, it sort of works.

Except... see, Samba has this means of automatically adding new users
when they're defined on the DC but not in Linux. So we use that
facility (with some 'l33t shell scripting by yours truly), but there's
some conflict in the group names and permissions and whatnot, and life
sucks until Supreet comes up with this weird idea: don't have Unix users
at all! I look at him in dismay, thinking, ``He's really lost it this
time'' and am about to suggest a long vacation, away from computers when
he explains: let the password routines use Winbind to get the users.
Sounds like utter cr*p to me, but we're desperate so I mangle the
appropriate files, and do a

  getent passwd

... and Voila! here's the list of all the users on the AD server! The
rest of the office is eyeing us with concern (this is at the client's
office) as we go into high-fives, middle-fives, low-fives, jaffi-pa's,
bhangra, balle-balles and general rejoicing. The rest of the
configuration looks like a breeze...

...Until...

Wait, the client also has complex access rules for his data! See, the
``folder'' Marketing belongs to the marketing group and everyone in that
group has read and write access to it, only, see, the Director Projects
needs to view the files in /this/ sub-folder, and the Director Finance
must be able to modify the files in /this/ sub-folder and /this/
sub-folder, and... you get the idea.

Linux doesn't have fine-grained filesystem access control yet (well, the
new betas do, but none of the ``stable'' releases). Scratch heads
(scratch patka in Supreet's case), fgrep -ir acl
/usr/src/linux/Documentation with no result, try to shrug off gloom and
despondency. Finally decide to bite the bullet, put our noses to the
grindstone, our back to the wheel and our ear to the ground and go in
for SGI's XFS. XFS is a hotsex filesystem which is going to be part of
Linux 2.6, but is not available for the 2.4 series except as a patch.
Rather than patch, we decide to get SGI's complete Linux kernel CVS tree
for kernel 2.4.21.

A few hours (170MB downloaded) and a couple of kernel compiles later
we're ready to test ACLs on Linux. Bah, what testing? It's Linux, and
it works as advertised. Plug ACLs into Samba, and we're ready to start
testing the setup.

I won't go into the details of the testing phase. Suffice it to say
that it was bloody, gory and rigorous. And that it passed off without
incident.

Saturday (19th) night we brought the new system online. Restored from
tape wherever possible -- if you restore a backup from an NT machine
onto a Samba share you get the complete user, group and access control
lists on each file and directory. Unfortunately some of the tapes (only
worth about 10 gig of data) refuse to restore, so we have to copy those
files manually from the old NT server. Next 2 hours is spent with the
client's IT bossman, lookin

Yes that surely works. What I was worried about was using Win2K and
WinXP on the same box, but some RnD shows that they too can coexist. The
order that you mentioned is correct. But you need to be sure of one
thing, WinNT, win2K and win XP need to be on *different* partitions.
This is because they all have a common set of system files and if put on
the same paritition may wipe out the other. Go ahead try it out.

RE: [ilugd] edit oldconfig for kernel compilation

2003-07-16 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
Hi,
This practice might help you. In the /boot, there is almost always a
config file which was used to build the currently running kernel (should
be named, configxxx). Copy this file to the /usr/local/linux folder.
Then use make old config, it would prompt you for the new things that
are there in the new kernel. Also, you can use make xconfig or make
menuconfig and load this file. What this ensures is that you have the
settings and modules that are already present according to the present
kernel that you are using and add only the new ones for the new kernel.

Dear all,
I would like to know if I can copy the old configuration of the

kernel to a newer one and edit that (not by hand!). AFAIK there are only
3
options :- `make oldconfig', `make menuconfig' and `make xconfig'. But
waht
about edit old config? There are only 2 features for which I am
re-compiling
my kernel. And I thought that if I'm re-compiling, then why not upgrade?
But,
what if I switch on the wrong option and switch off the required one?
This
would be the first time I'm compiling a kernel which, if does not work,
WILL
be very hazardous for me. I have experimented a few times, but only once
did
it work properly. So, I need your help.

Could it be like first I run `make oldconfig' and then `make xconfig' or

`make menuconfig'?

I'm running RHL 7.2 (tux should run but somehow it is not running).

Thanks.

RE: [ilugd] hi reloading prob?????!!!!!

2003-07-16 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
I think you'd need to flush your mbr. There are many ways to do this. I
assume you donot have any data on your disk.
1. use DOS formatted bootable floppy, or a win98 startup disk. Copy
fdisk.exe on this diskette. Boot through this floppy and type fdisk
/mbr. This should do the work.
2. use seagate Disk Manager to partition the disk again. This is faster
and effective.

Get back in case these don't work.

RE: [ilugd] java for mozilla

2003-07-16 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
I think you downloaded the correct version. In order to make mozilla
recognize java applets and other java stuff, you need to do this.
1. explode the bin or rpm or wotever in some folder.
2. if you downloaded jre there would be a folder called
plugins/i386/ns610 .. Or may b I forgot the path, but ns610 should be
there somewhere in plugins.
3. this folder contains a plugins something like libjavaplugin_oji.xxx
4. symlink this plugin into the plugins folders under mozilla
installation. Copying wont work, you have to make a link.

Subject: [ilugd] java for mozilla

hi,

i have a simple problem. go.icq.com requires java, and somehow my
mozilla doesnt work...

i just downloaded j2re-1.41 from www.java.com.(22mb)

firstly did i download the right thing?
if not what is it that i need to download? and isnt it there on RH8 cds?
(cat all cds | grep j2 = didnt get any results...)

if i am speaking german above, please tell me where the heck am i going
wrong, because frankly i thought running java used to be a simple task!!

p.s.: mozilla site refers me to a 77mb java download from java.sun.com.
(Are you *sure* i need to download that!! coz that is "slightly" off my
league for now...! ;)

RE: [ilugd] How to know whether the file has been copied fully ?

2003-07-10 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
Thanks Tarun and Nishi, that was something that I also thought earlier,
and may be this is the way I am going to take. Are there any FTP servers
that can run a script once a user has disconnected from the FTP server ?
I was looking for a solution more like that.

Or, simply write the filesize in a tmp file and compare it with the
actual every time you come in. If the filesize has NOT changed since the
last visit, perform a 'mv' and remove the tmp file otherwise update the
tmp file.

[ilugd] How to know whether the file has been copied fully ?

2003-07-10 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
Hi,
I have an vsftpd server running on RH9 system. The behaviour is to
copy the files to a new location when the upload has completed for just
one particular user. I have a simple cron job with mv command that runs
every minute to check for new files and moves them to the new location.
The problem that I am facing is that the files have not been ftp'ed
completely when the cron job runs and hence moves only partial files.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to figure out whether the complete
file has been ftp'ed and then only move it to the new location. Or is
there an FTP server that can run a script when the upload completes ?

Thanks

[ilugd] Checking for bad blocks on existing partition

2003-07-09 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
Hello all,
I suspect some bad blocks on my HDD, and want to check for
those.I think "mke2fs -c -c " does it but that would format my
partition, also I tried using the "mke2fs -n -c /dev/hda1" but it
doesn't seem to do anything. Is there any utility or some parameters to
usual ones which may be used for this purpose ? Or any workarounds like
moving the existing data to some other partition, checking the partition
in doubt, and moving the data back ?

thanks

[ilugd] X Window on MSWindows

2003-07-08 Thread Jasmeet S. Virdi
Hi all,
I did something interesting recently, thot u guys would like to
know. Since xdm (or gdm or kdm) has the inbuilt ability to use XDMCP to
display the desktop on a remote machine, the cygwin port also supports
this. By making minor changes to the default gdm conf (in my case), it
can be made to listen for network requests. The cygwin port of XFree86
http://xfree86.cygwin.com) can be downloaded and used to connect to that
gdm to get a graphical login prompt, i.e. getting X window desktop on a
MS Windows machine. Just found it interesting, so posted it.
I am not sure about the bandwidth requirements over similar
products like VNC or commercial X Window servers. Does anybody have any
idea ? Or can someone help me measure the bandwidth involved in this,
how can I go about doing it ? Using ethereal or something similar may b
?

thanx

HI

We are using squid for our net connection where we acl based on the IPs
as we are using statis IPs. Now we want to shift to DHCP . In that case
how to restrict users.

TIA.

Nope I think ur calculations add up correct. May b I'd have to go back
and check the stuff that I did :o)

What is the usual way to calculate this bandwidth, is FTP ok ??
I'll run a fresh set of tests and up date u guys..

ok i'll put my side of calculations, maybe they are wrong... but lets c.

(firstly, B=Bytes, b=bits)

these are 10Mbit cards..

=10 Mb/sec
=(10/8) MB/sec (byte = 8 bits..)
=1.2x MBytes/sec

which i think should then be the upper limit on a 10Mbps card...right?

therefore a 1000KB/s transfer rates are about 83%. they are not
fantastic agreed, but they arent that bad.

but then how do you get 3/4 MBps?? or are you talking about 3/4 Mbps?

if its 4 Mbits/sec i think the capacity utilization is darn low...
if its 4 MBytes/sec... you've just set the world record.

either way, you have lots of work to do (maybe set a patent for the
combination of cards used ;-)

just kidding, but well please anyone get me correct if i bundled up
majorly somewhere..

hi,

i use two applications, gedit, and xterm a bit too much since the past
few weeks, and have noticed that beyond a certain limit, xterm just
doesnt take more inputs... or well it stops showing anything (key
inputs) on screen...

1. the kbd is working, since other apps are working.
2. "file" etc.. menus on xterm are working.. (through kbd also!) 3.
close, and restart xterm lets me work again...

is this a memory leak problem? or am i forgetting something(something
like a stupid problem that i had since the past few weeks was the Ctrl-S
in gedit saves, and Ctrl-S in xterm turns scroll-lock on... and which
basically let the console useless..!! yes, looking at the kbd once in a
while helps!! ;))

anyways, is there any combination of keys apart from ctrl-s which i
might be pressing (unknowningly) for this to happen.. or is it simply a
bug?
