Re: [ilugd] Android users here?
Re: Google contacts/syncing/privacy Contacts syncing in Android is not limited to Google Servers. There are lot of different services it can sync with (e.g. gmail/facebook/twitter/funambol servers, etc). Just a contacts sync adapter is needed. This is for ease of use so that you can contact your contacts from your phone as well as web. You can even run your own server and sync your contacts data easily with that to get the best of both worlds (privacy vs ease of use). -- http://twitter.com/shantanugoel http://tech.shantanugoel.com/ http://www.safercode.com/blog/ http://blog.shantanugoel.com/ ___ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

[ilugd] iptables + selective proxying of connections
Hi I need some help on iptables if anyone knows about it here. I have a linux based router and 3 machines (A, B, C) that connect it to access the internet. I need to selectively route a couple of these machines through proxy server(s) while keeping the 3rd machine's connection untouched. I am guessing that I should be able to find an answer through iptables. Please let me know if someone has done something like this before. The router has most linux commands and tools available on it. BTW, the complete end situation would be something like this. There are 2 proxy servers, 1 running on the router itself (192.168.0.1:8080) and another on machine A (192.168.0.2:8080). Machine A (192.168.0.2) also has a direct/unproxified connection to the internet through the router. Machine B (192.168.0.3)'s traffic is automatically redirected by the router through Machine A's proxy server. Machine C (192.168.0.4)'s traffic is automatically redirected by the router through it's own proxy server. A bit of detail about why I want to do this is that A is my main machine which I use regularly and don't want its connection to be proxified. B has some programs running which I need to test through a custom proxy that I run over machine A. Since this is a custom proxy and not compilable for my router's architecture, I need to run it on my PC A. C is an embedded device that constantly accesses some similar data in a certain time range and I'm trying to optimize its net usage by using a popular caching proxy on the router (it has a hard disk attached for the cache). C is always on even when A is not on so I need its corresponding proxy to be on router. Also, is it possible to do this on-the-fly, i.e. I don't have to restart any service that leads to breaking of connection or atleast not having to reboot the router. And untill then i think this application might prove handy. Target of this project is to come out with DVD distribution, having all the content of english wikipedia, and if some-one wishes to install it, it should be able to do so in less then 5G space(One can give that much space given the cheap rates of memmory now a days) and finally make it good enough that it can make upto this link http://download.wikimedia.org/dvd.html . Now here are some links for some attempts made to create offline wikipedia already among these i have worked around first one heavily as it seemed to me as more logical and complete: 1. http://users.softlab.ece.ntua.gr/~ttsiod/buildWikipediaOffline.htmlhttp://users.softlab.ece.ntua.gr/%7Ettsiod/buildWikipediaOffline.html 2. http://code.google.com/p/bzreader/ 3. http://code.google.com/p/daluang/ 4. http://code.google.com/p/pyswim/ All of this ideas(except last one) work around using compressed xml file provided by mediawiki.(http://download.wikimedia.org/) First one among above mentioned list uses mediawiki parser itself to convert xml to html. Now here i had to create equivalent python parser for the same. Second one is a browser which allows you to read xml content, which renders articles in some to make them readable. Third and fourth are i guess more near to my approach but they are using them for i guess chinese and indonasian content of wikipedia. All in all except from first link no-one else attempted to create working offline english-wikipedia. Right now i have a working configuration but it will take around 4G of space, i am looking for place to host it, and will post it as soon as it is done, until then i thought it would be good to at least share the idea, and get some feed-back/reaction. As far as future is concerned, it can be ported to work on OLPC-sugar, once it meets all requirements, can be distributed as DVD's just like Britanica or encarta(both are propritory). I'm sure there should be some kind of solution there for network compilation of local code. When I was in college, a person had made a small project for this. However, if you are not able to find such a thing, something can be cooked up using php and shell scripts. I'm not good in php, but a simple solution that requires minimal coding in php that I can think of is to use wordpress and cforms plugin. Step 1. Just create a page in wordpress, and create a simple form in cforms to allow uploading of zip files. (All this is WYSIWYG so far) Step 2. Cforms gives you the ability to hook in your functions to work on uploaded files. You can create a simple hook to unzip the uploaded file into a directory for the username given in the form or the ip address of the PC from which it was uploaded. Step 3. Then exec your shell script that runs gcc to compile it and compares the output with the expected ones. Instead of asking new users to relocate, lets put more and more FOSS things on windows. This is a better approach and something which could work for masses who are not much aware about the vision part of Free Software movement. Regards Swapnil Well, I have a bit of disagreement there. This thread is going into all directions, so lets make it clear that FOSS is not equal to GNU/Linux. They are two separate entities/phenomenons/philosophies. If the aim is to promote FOSS then there is no flaw in the above mentioned approach and FOSS will prosper beyond limits.. BUT if the ultimate aim is to promote GNU/Linux, as Swapnil says, it might snowball into something completely opposite because this means that energies be diverted towards developing apps for Windows base, then where do we get time/energy for development for linux? As it is, we can see lots of apps not getting enough developers. And when I say lots, I actually mean loots. So, in the end we might see the development dying on linux side. And moreover, from the users' perspective as well, it would not be very simple to pull off the windows base and replace with linux. Because the user interaction with FOSS apps on windows will still be governed by windows rules, another thing is that if they already have all the apps on windows, why would they feel the need to switch over to a new environment and learn it all over again? Also, Google has promised to open-source Android, but it is not open source at the moment. What I wish for is to get a true open system where I can program natively and not have to learn java.. [...] No need to wait: http://openmoko.org Regards, Gora When I wished about the true open system I meant the same thing that u mentioned that I hope that google opens up android as they have promised. About openmoko, I want to get freerunner instead of an android based phone but the problem there i see is, (These could be misinterpretations from what I have read over the intertubes), that the base builds given out aren't very stable and have a lot of issues. I want to have a stable system on top of which I can develop. All the reviews I've read so far are kinda mixed. But this is my fault as well, as I'm wishing for a development platform that I'll also use daily in my regular work. Moreover, one thing is for sure that Android will NEVER be as open as openmoko. There will always be quite a bit of binary blobs in there to protect a lot of IP. -Shantz -- I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, U can't prove anything - Bart Simpson http://blog.shantanugoel.com http://tech.shantanugoel.com ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

Re: [ilugd] Windblows on Software Freedom Day
Well, the questions are manifold here... Free Software or Software Freedom Day does not (and should not) restrict the propagation of the idea of freedom on any platform, be it windows or linux. Freedom inside jail is better than no freedom at all. I think the question put forth by Linux Lingam is not contradicting to the above but to the participation of a unit like ILUG-D in an event where the platform of choice is opposite to the group's very premise, this is where a free software group and a linux group are different in their priniciples. Now, instead of straightaway taking a call, my question is as to the why behind the particular pic in question. Is it because Linux was not able to fit the bill technically for the activity involved? Or is it just because there wasn't any specific reason to use linux because it was a free software event and not a linux event? In the second case as well, it should have been better to use linux, because (first statement withstanding) it's always better to have full freedom rather than freedom inside jail, but I can give the benefit of doubt here to the organizers (Technical reasons or otherwise). As far as ILUG-D's ideological stand on this is concerned, I'd be interested to hear about it from other members... -Shantz -- I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, U can't prove anything - Bart Simpson http://blog.shantanugoel.com http://tech.shantanugoel.com 2008/9/22 Praveen A [EMAIL PROTECTED]: 2008/9/21 Jeba Singh Emmanuel | जेबा सिंह ईम्मेनुयेल [EMAIL PROTECTED]: setting a rule or policy to not use something, even in principle: is freedom? Re: [ilugd] How to use Fedora 9 for Commerical use
Thanks for this info, But, I was having impression that , you can not attach a GPL packages with your peice of code for which will be shiped as binary blobs, you have to open your source code also .. As per my knowledge , you can use LGPL in that case. What I understand is that you can provide properietary/commercial/closed source software along with GPL'ed sw if you are using the GPL'ed sw in its entirety and not as a part of your program, i.e., you cannot compile or link your software against GPL'ed sw. however you can provide GPL'ed utilities along with your software. [ilugd] Shantz Xwinwrap - The Moving Wallpaper fun continues
Hi Guys I just joined ILUG-D recently and it seems to be a fervent community. Although I wouldn't call my self a linux expert, I do like to tinker around with it a bit. Hope to have a good time here. Meanwhile, thought of letting you know about my latest venture. XWinWrap is a small utility written a lng time ago that allowed you to stick most of the apps to your desktop background. What this meant was you could use an animated screensaver (like glmatrix, electric sheep, etc) or even a movie, and use it as your wallpaper. But only one version of this app was released, and it had a few problems, like it wasn't exactly sticking to the background and geometry option didn't work as well. Seeing no-one picking it up, I decided to give it a bit of polish last weekend by fixing the above problems and also add a few features. And here it is, in its new avatar Shantz XWinWraphttp://tech.shantanugoel.com/projects/linux/shantz-xwinwrap.(Hit the link for downloads, usage details, feature requests and a video that shows a couple of its features) Let me know what you think about it, or what I can do better, any feature requests etc. Thanks Shantanu -- I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, U can't prove anything - Bart Simpson http://blog.shantanugoel.com http://tech.shantanugoel.com ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
