Thank you very much, Bruce. I neglected to mention that there are three “baskets.” Two are Seagate Slims which I rotate for A storage at my son’s place. Safeguarding Volumes
I would like to reformat an external hard drive at the media level, hopefully to salvage it for another few years. It contains three CCC volumes that I want to safeguard. A fourth volume has corrupted files. What is the best procedure? All volumes are formatted Journaled HFS Plus, NOT APFS. As I understand it, Disk Utility First Aid I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup four computers to the external drive as bootable clones. Each CCC volume resides in its own partition. The volume for my main computer has corrupted files which have not been resolved by reformatting that volume singly with Disk Utility Erase and then cloning anew. I want the clones to remain bootable. Can I simply drag each volume to another media, to either my iMac’s internal drive or another external drive? Would I need to create separate partitions for each volume? Otherwise, should the volumes be set into disk images? Bombich (CCC vendor) recommends using disk images “sparingly.” Then, would I update each disk image in subsequent clones, or would I “Restore” each volume to permit updating the clones? Migration Worked but not Keychain Local Items
Using Setup Assistant, I migrated from my old iMac (24-inch, Early 2009) with El Capitan 10.11.6 to a new iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) initially with Sierra and now upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.4. All is well except for Keychain. Most Local Items did not transfer. Is this to be expected? Is there an easy way to pull my old Local Items keychain? Or must I rebuild the list manually? iMac Internal Microphone
Hello, Folks no longer hear me in FaceTime. On iMac (24-inch, Early 2009), running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6, in Sound preferences, I do not see “Internal Microphone.” Does that mean the microphone is kaput? Re: need schooling
Hello Eddie, Congratulations on your choice. I am only 82 years old. The Help tab in the top bar on the screen. In the Finder, you can pick on What’s New in Mac OS X and Get to Know your Mac. Decide what parts of the offerings to spend time on first. Each application has Help. Also Search in Help. A local Macintosh user group may have someone ready to spend time with you one-on-one. Beginners’ level class in your local public school system. A seniors group. Your neighbor’s kid (no kidding!). BOOKS: I like the Teach Yourself VISUALLY series. If your new Mac is running Sierra, “Teach Yourself VISUALLY macOS Sierra” is available now. If you have High Sierra, that book will ship from Amazon.com later this month. Another series with good reviews has “MacOS Sierra for Seniors.” Their High Sierra version is also due soon. You should be able to sit a while and browse these books at any Barnes & Noble store. Perhaps your public library has them. Apple Stores quit their own One to One service two years ago. If you are moving over from a Windows PC, Apple has (or used to have) a tutorial on line to help in the transition. I understand I can connect to the old iMac via a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter. Perhaps I’d have to put a FireWire extension cable in line. http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/answers/how-to-use-target-disk-mode-to-boot-from-another-macs-hard-drive Would that work? Screen Scrambles on Wake
Greetings, Am I looking at a hardware problem or misbehaving software? My workhorse is the last 24 inch iMac that Apple produced. Running 10.9.5 Mavericks. Early 2009 “Display Port” 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM 640GB HD SuperDrive NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory When waking from sleep, occasionally the display will scramble for about 5 or 10 seconds before organizing itself. This seems to happen more when multiple screens are left open, even as few as three. Or, it may go black for a few seconds and then settle down. There are 30 to 35 items on the Desktop. This has been happening for two or three years, but seems to be more often now. If this is hardware, should I eventualIy expect total failure of the screen to display properly and prevent access to the system? External Drive for OS 10.4 Tiger
Can’t new external hard drives be formated or otherwise made to work with OS X 10.4 Tiger? I do not understand why not. A user group member wants to buy an external hard drive to back up her old iMac with 10.4 Tiger. It seems that models available at the Apple Store, Best Buy, and other outlets specify OS X 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard or later. This is with models like Seagate Slim and LaCie Porsche, whether USB bus powered or with power adaptor. I see that macsales.com/OWC has external drives that accommodate everything from Mac OS 8.6 to the latest OS X. Re: Moving to WordPress
I am dual posting this to the LowEndMac/WordPress page and to the forum in Google Groups since the two presentations are not being merged. I took a quick look and decided not to register into WordPress. Then I logged in with my Google name/password via the URL given in the original announcement I received in the imaclist digest. That gave me the LEM homepage. With no joy trying to find the new forum via the top level buttons, I noticed the obscure mention of WordPress down the page. The WordPress page width takes up up two thirds of my 24 inch iMac screen, and from top to bottom I see a great deal of empty space. There is no e-mail, no digest, and, If i understand the plan, I would have to go individually to four or five or a half dozen fora via the browser to see if there is anything of interest. My mode of operation is to scan each LEM digest, archive to my hard drive any threads or bits of threads that I want which may otherwise disappear in the future as internet service allows to happen, and optionally go to the online forum if I want to join in the thread or to open a new topic. I am not about to archive web pages. I avoid the GoogleGroups presentation as much as possible, and WordPress is worse. Without the digest, I am unlikely to go chasing for things in Safari. Getting notified of follow-up replies via email won't cut it. A goodby would be a shame. Hmm, I see that my LEM thread archive goes back to the powermacs group in year 2000. Re: Mail Inbox Balloons with Multiple Copies
Does anybody have thoughts on the Time Machine vs. Mail angle? Thanks Harry, for your rebuild routine. I'm saving it in case this duplication happens again. For now, the duplicates are gone. Will the Imported mailboxes all wind up in a new Imported folder? Will they replace my existing set of a couple dozen folders or will they sit at the bottom of my existing list? If at the bottom, I'd have to somehow manually rearrange things to look like before. By the way, a couple years ago, I fumble-moused a folder or two into chaos. With Time Machine, I restored the entire Mail Folder in my UsersLibrary. Very Fast. Mail Inbox Balloons with Multiple Copies
Could Time Machine be messing me up with my email? I have the last 24 iMac, Display Port, March 2009, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with Mail 4.6. On October 16 and 25, the Inbox of one of my three accounts became populated with up to six, unread copies of emails. These emails had remained in the Inbox or been moved to other folders or into the Trash after reading. Some messages were not duplicated. I use POP mail and keep the window shade at the bottom of the window. The Inbox contents usually amount to about 3/4 of one screen full. With the duplicated messages, the contents amounted to over five screens. On both occasions, I restored the offending Inbox with Time Machine. Time Machine created its own folder in Mail and provided the correct Inbox contents in a new Recovered Mailboxes folder. I dragged the contents of the bad Inbox to the Trash and then dragged the contents of the Recovered Mailboxes folder to the now empty Inbox. And all seems well. There is nothing wrong at the Gmail website. The same email account behaves properly on other devices in the house. This morning, with my back to the machines, I heard the Time Capsule working and then go silent. In an instant, I then heard a new message alert. Turning around, I found the duplicate contents in the Inbox. Mail was set to check for new messages every minute. In Console, the All Messages file shows nothing that I can suspect related to the problem. Thanks for any enlightenment. iTunes Nuisance
What could possibly cause the iTunes application to launch itself three times in 4 or 5 minutes this afternoon, and do it again repeatedly at random intervals? What could cause it to launch itself when this iMac is in sleep? iTunes is opening with a screen for downloading music, importing CDs, and watching tutorials, all of which I do not care to do. Is Apple playing games with this machine? Running OS X 10.6.4 on iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with iTunes 10.0. Also, it is best to connect the bootable backup drive to the computer ONLY when actually doing the backup or a recovery. Disconnect it from both the machine and AC power when it is not running. I clone three or four Macs to separate, bootable partitions on a drive about once a week. Some folks do it more frequently. Some folks keep two bootable backup drives, having one off-site in case of calamity at home base. By its nature, a TM external drive is connected to both the computer and AC power at all times, making it vulnerable to lightning and power hits. I have all four Macs running TM to a Time Capsule. Re: Snow Leopard won't play with my printer...
Bill: First of all, it seems that your older Intel iMac came with Tiger 10.4.4 and therefore may not boot from Panther. I'm not sure about that. And your later Intel iMac would have come with a later OS X. Presumably, your friend's G4 eMac does not have OS 9 installed, the OS 9 drivers are not installed, and whatever version of OS X is on it does not have Classic on board. If it is running Panther or Tiger, your friend's original installer disk(s) should have Classic available. But you may not wish to impact that machine's software configuration, unless the owner is kind of techie and offers to do so. As I mentioned in another list on this topic, you could try to Find someone locally with an Mac running O9 or Classic. If available, that would be the easiest thing to do. But your next best alternative is indeed something like what you propose here. You may need to use a second external FW drive if you do not want to erase your backup files on the drive at hand. The likely issue is that your current backup drive may be using the GUID file system if you set it up with an Intel Mac. The G4 eMac will boot only from a drive formatted with the APM (Apple Partition Map) and not from a drive with the GUID Partition Table (GPT). With Leopard (and likely Snow Leopard), you can find a setting in Disk Utility to format in APM. On Oct 2, 1:03 pm, Bill Spencer wspen...@jhu.edu wrote: After doing as much research as I have time for I'm thinking that I can get the printer's IP address if I 1) install OS 9 and Panther on the external FW drive I use for backups (I have disc images of 9 and its updates, and install discs for Panther), 2) boot from there in Panther (since I understand that I can't boot either iMac in 9 since they're Intel machines), 3) launch Classic, and then 4) fire up the Apple Printer Utility (or whatever it's called). That drive's about 85% empty right now so space isn't an issue, but I'm wondering about a couple of things: A) Can I partition this drive without deleting what's already there? Yes you can with Snow Leopard. As always, you should back it up first, because there is always the risk of destroying access to the onboard files. But if already formatted with GUID, that stops the show. B) Would I need separate partitions for OS 9 and Panther? No. C) Is creating OS partition(s) even necessary? I probably wouldn't keep the OS stuff there long-term since I have no need for Classic, let alone 9, except for this (I hope) one-time issue. No. But if that drive is GUID, it will not boot the G4. D) Would there be any reason to install OS 9 alone, then cart the drive and the printer to a friend's house who has a G4 eMac which could run 9 by itself? I'd rather not have to horse the stuff around but if the main strategy is flawed I can certainly do so. If you format a drive in APM, there is no reason to install Panther. I propose you bring an external drive to the G4, format it in APM, install OS 9, and then do your printer business. E) Can I install 9 from the images or would I have to burn discs and install from those? This is analogous to installing from a .dmg download. You should be able to mount the disk image and install the software. You should be able to do all this without impacting the friend's G4 configuration except possibly for temporary use of his Desktop. I'm not sure that installing OS 9 directly from the disk(s) to the external drive will work. You may have to first copy the image to the Desktop. If there's anything I'm missing or forgetting, please give me a whack on the head. As always my thanks in advance! Barring any clarifying comments from other folks on this list, any remaining questions involving the G4 would be best taken up on the lowendmac G-List (G3-5 List). This slower performance (taking longer to load web pages, and slower download speeds) occurs whether or not he is connected. My first question is whether this slowdown is to be expected when wired through the router as opposed to directly to the modem? No. For Internet service, the speed chokepoint is usually in the cable modem, the cable hookup beyond it outside the home, and in the Internet itself. Ethernet is always better than wireless for internal local area networking within the home between computers. If not, any suggestions on what i can do to increase performance? First check your cables. Make sure that your Ethernet cable from the modem to the router is plugged into the router's WAN port, possibly yellow in color. You may need to educate yourself in setting up the router, or at least in checking its settings. It is possible that the router is set for features you do not need and which usually slow down performance. Is the router set for assigning the IP address to your G4 via DHCP? Would i have better speed going wireless myself? It is way too early to think about that extra complication. Go here for their Speed Test on your Internet performance under varying conditions. Re: Two WLANs or One?
Everything is fine. iBook plays with Time Capsule. Setup is both AirPort boxes cabled to Verizon Router which is set for DHCP and WiFi turned OFF, both boxes in Bridge mode, and Time Capsule set with File Sharing ON via AirPort Utilities Disk button. But I am embarrassed that the AirPort Express was not set to Bridge mode as I had said earlier. I just relied on my son's assurance on that without checking myself. Hmmm, can't always trust those IT people, eh? Before discovering the error, he spent about 20 minutes on this with the iBook and iMac side by side, doing Terminal voodoo with sudos, looking at IP addresses, and pings, all to verify that the setups were not okay. While explaining things to me, he mentioned that he does this Terminal stuff half his work day. Again, thanks for the advice and support. (as bridge to TC)] Set up your Time Capsule as a router, (the default mode) to serve addresses to your local network, it will route all the clients to the Verizon router for internet access, and the Airport Express will then connect via ethernet to one of the LAN ports on the TC instead of the Verizon box. I recabled Airport Express to the Time Capsule router which uses DHCP. The Airport Express is set up in bridged mode, as it is now, no changes will be needed beyond a restart, I expect. Restarted Macs and unplugged/replugged power to Airport Express and TC. This will make the network managed by the TC as the LAN for all your client systems, and I think this should work for letting you use a wireless system on the AE use the TC for backups. That was a nice hope, but the iBook on WLAN B still does not see the TC for backup on WLAN A. And when the Intel iMac is on WLAN B, it does not see the TC for backup either. But both get to the Internet no matter what cabling configuration I try. The iMac is fine when I select WLAN A in AirPort. By the way, I recabled the AP Express to the Verizon router, so that it and the TC are peers again. And I turned the Verizon WiFi on, using DHCP. That makes no change. So I still need to find new settings for the AirPort boxes. I sent my original post to my son living out of town. When I talked with him, in two seconds he said we need to let the Verizon router do the DHCP to the client machines, just as you indicated in your first answer to me. But to put this generic plan in motion, he wants to get into my AirPort Utility on his next visit to adjust settings in the TC and AP Express. Maybe in a day or so. Will let you know. Maybe I'll give up on this and just run one WLAN with the TC set to 802.11, both g and n, in the 2.4 GHz band, giving up the advantages of the 5GHz band for the faster machines. On Jun 23, 3:39 pm, Bruce Johnson john...@pharmacy.arizona.edu wrote: iTunes and iPod don't care at all what transport underlies the TCP/IP network. Your 'network' in this instance is everything connected back to the Verizon router...your Airport devices are acting as wireless switches, not routers in this setup. (Routers connect different networks, switches connect different parts of a single network.) Your overall speed between any two nodes on the network will be limited by the slowest link, so the 802.11g will slow things down, but the 802.11n base station is connected to the network via 100 megabit ethernet..it will talk to your iPod at 802.11g speeds, but anything connected to it will talk to the internet at 802.11n speeds (actually whatever speed your internet is at, as even 802.11b networks can go faster than the average residential internet connection) The only times that you'll slow down a wireless station is when the faster and slower device are connected to the same base station, here you're connecting on two different segments of your LAN, so it's ok. Bruce: I slept on this, literally! Anyway, I was hoping something like your explanation would work out. But as implied in my original post (and I just verified it again), the G4 iBook on WLAN B cannot see the Time Capsule via AirPort. The iBook does fine with Time Machine via its Ethernet connection to the Verizon router. When I rearrange boxes on a book shelf, I will physically connect the iBook to the Time Capsule. To be more clear, I should have stated in my original post that the Time Capsule (2008) is the base station for WLAN A and that the Airport Express is the base station for WLAN B. So, to partially repeat my original post: QUOTE: WLAN A: 802.11n only (5 GHz) to maximize throughput for iMac and MacBook. Want to reset Apple TV to this net. WLAN B: 802.11g (2.4GHz) for G4 iBook, two iPod Touches, son's iPhone and his business secure laptop PC. Currently handles Apple TV. Both are set at WPA2 Personal. Both access Internet in separate Bridge mode via a Verizon router which has Coax connection to Verizon's FiOS fiber/coax conversion box (Optical Network Terminal- ONT) outside the house. Verizon router's WiFi (802.11b/g) is turned off. I want the iBook to work seamlessly with Time Capsule. My wife needs to sync MacBook and iMac iTunes with Apple TV and iPod Touch. Are there ways to set up these machines and accessory devices for these functions with the two separate networks? Or is it best to put it all under the Time Capsule? UNQUOTE I believe all machines and devices would work well in one WLAN with the Time Capsule base station set for both 802.11g and 802.11n in the 2.4GHz band. But there I lose the speed advantage for the Intel iMac and the MacBook in having their dedicated 802.11n network in the 5GHz band. As things stand now, the MacBook can work with the iPod Touch on one network and must manually stitch to the other network for Time Machine to the Time Capsule. The iBook cannot even see Time Capsule. So I was hoping there could be a way to use some method of File Sharing to transcend the two networks. What was My Hard Drive doing?
After letting our aluminum iMac running Leopard 10.5.7 sleep overnight, I woke it and noticed the hard drive was running for more than a few seconds. Unusual, while just getting into Safari and Mail. Thinking that Spotlight was indexing unexpectedly, I launched Activity Monitor and found only one md item at 0.1 under CPU blinking on and off. I took three screen shots, the first two while the drive was still spinning, and the third just after it stopped, all at 10:37 and 10:38 AM. I did not catch the md item. With the screen showing Active Processes, the first two screen shots show Process ID 465, Name find, User nobody at the top. The CPU counts were 9.8 and 41.4. Window Server was 3.6 and 2.5, with everything else at 1.5 or below. The little graphics at the bottom show columns rising to about 40 to 70%. So what was nobody doing? Should I care? NeoOffice Leapfrogs OpenOffice Again
The following article comes from: http://www.macuser.co.uk/news/250427 Al Poulin *** News [Office software] Tuesday 31st March 2009 NeoOffice puts a Mac twist on OpenOffice 9:21AM, Tuesday 31st March 2009 The NeoOffice project has released a new version of its eponymous productivity software suite. NeoOffice 3.0 comprises a set of office applications for word processing, drawing and creating spreadsheets, presentations and database. It is based on OpenOffice, released late last year, but has a strong emphasis on features that are specific to the Mac but absent from the cross-platform oriented Open Office. Those features include: native floating tools windows and access to menu items when no document is open, neither of which is provided by OpenOffice; a media browser for adding content such as photos and movies a from iLIfe applications; magnify and swipe trackpad gestures; image import from cameras and scanners; and support for Leopard’s grammar checker. The NeoOffice developers also claim significant speed improvements to the OpenOffice.org code. On the downside, one OpenOffice.org feature is missing from NeoOffice. The developers have not been able integrate Universal Access so if you need Universal Access support use OpenOffice.org, Microsoft Office, or Apple iWork. NeoOffice 3.0 is a free download. Re: thumb drives (jump drives)
On Feb 5, 11:03 am, michael bluestein blueste...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Kyle and thanks for replying to my post. Actually I am running 10.3.9 but will be upgrading OS to Tiger later today. As i said I see the sandisk in system profiler under USB and I also see it in the Disk Utility application. Of course I do not know how to use disk utility. I so not understand any of the terms as New Image, unmount and a few others. so I do not know how to fix the sandisk through the disk utility. Anyway the computer does recognize the flash drive but that is the extent of it. I will try again after I install the newer OS. Using a flash drive sure is handy when one needs it. For reformatting the flash drive, the Help function in Disk Utility should work as I mentioned in my previous post. If there is a problem doing that, I'm not sure that the long discussion on SanDisk's web site that Bruce Johnson pointed to earlier in this thread will help. That U3 business seems to be an entirely different issue. But I like Randy B. Singer's statement in SanDisk's thread; see Message 21 of 41 in the third page. I notice that some folks simply quit trying with SanDisk drives and got another brand. New Image has to do with Disk Utility's function to create a specific copy of some file, or folder, or entire drive and putting that on another volume or drive or CD or DVD. Mounting a drive means that you can see a drive or volume. In a working computer, that simply means that the hard drive works, the operating system works, and that you are accessing the drive's contents. For a flash drive or CD/DVD, it means you can see its icon and the computer can work with its contents. Unmount means that you are quitting your access to a particular drive or volume. For your main, internal drive, that is automatic when you shut down. For flash drives, CD/DVDs, external hard drives, unmounting means that you are dragging the icon to the Trash in the Dock. In OS X, the Trash icon morphs into an Eject icon in the process. When unmounting flash drives, you must ensure that you have closed all files and quit any applications on it, at the risk of permanent damage to the contents. The book by David Pogue, Mac OS X Tiger Edition The Missing Manual would be an excellent investment. You can also borrow excellent books for your stage in this game from the public library. There's a 4.5 meter total cable length limit, and standard 6-pin FW supplies 45 watts of power. This per the standard, via Wikipedia. Interesting, so, per the standard, the average length of the connecting cables cannot exceed 71mm (about 2 3/4 inches). Re: thumb drives (jump drives)
On Feb 2, 2009, at 3:59 AM, imaclist group wrote: == 1 of 4 == Date: Sun, Feb 1 2009 2:19 pm From: michaelangelo I just got a 4 GB thumb drive (is this the same thing as a jump drive?). The package says it works with Mac OS 9.1.x+ and OS X. I got it to transport files between my trusty Dalmation and the new FlowerPower I just bought. The Dalmation has OS 9.2.2 on it and the Flower Power has 10.4 The thumb drive's icon appears on the Mac with OS 10.4 but will not appear on the desktop of the Dalmation with 9.2.2. Is there something more I need to do when or after inserting it into the Dalmation to make it work? I tried simply inserting it and also leaving it in while rebooting. How is the flash drive formatted? What brand? Most flash drives are in FAT32. Some of the later SanDisk units have problems with Macs. I suspect that OS 9 does not like whatever format is on the flash drive. See if you can reformat it into HFS+. That should work fine with both iMacs, but then it will likely not be compatible with Windoze PCs. Re: Text Messages How to Save
On Jan 30, 8:42 pm, michael bluestein blueste...@gmail.com wrote: hello, not one for giving advice but try highlight and then copy the text to your text editor then save that. That is good advice. But a few web sites seem to have some kind of way to prevent that easy technique. Sometimes you end up with extra artifacts of the web page in your text document. Simply click to the right of such images and delete them. Another, more tedious, way is to make screen shots and to save those. Use Grab in the ApplicationsUtilities folder, or the old keyboard commands for this. Apple/Shift/3 gives you the entire screen labeled as Picture 1 on the Desktop. Apple/Shift/4 gives you a cursor that you control to build a frame across the diagonal corners of the image you want to save. If the information you want to save fits on one screen, you need only one image. With an image you cannot make changes to the text.
