Re: [info-tech] Calendars

2009-10-14 Thread A.Bloomquist

Karl,

I use iCal on Mac for my own scheduling and work. Have categories
for different buildings, etc.

After going to ITEC, Google has Calendars for iGoogle. You may want
to take a look at that. You can create categories, such as when out
of district. I have not explored it yet but as with other Google
apps, you may be able to share just certain things with designated
people. When I have a chance to take a look, I will share that. Ann
Nicholson did a session on Google stuff, including Google Calendars
and has handouts on the ITEC site.

I am sharing the Google Sites, web page development, with some
teachers to try until we have our district website redone.

Great Conference, thanks to a lot of our local group. Thank you!

One point with digital video cameras we (I) learned the hard way was
to be sure the model you purchase can be connected to a computer for
using editing software, such as iMovie. We had ordered a dvd model
but it could not be connected to the computer. Fortunately, we were
able to exchange it for one of the Canon ZR series that could be
connected. Just an FYI.

[info-tech] Interactive Whiteboards, Document Cameras, etc.

2009-04-07 Thread A.Bloomquist
We are working towards ordering interactive whiteboards for our
elementary classrooms.

I have reread the emails from those that have or are planning to add
these to their schools.

If any of you could give an update on where you are with the
interactive whiteboards - which ones you are using, what you
recommend, how they are being used, and any warnings before ordering
these.

I know a couple of teachers have mentioned the document camera to me
but I think it would be a modernized overhead projector.

Our superintendent attended a national conference, attended a
demonstration of an interactive whiteboard and returned saying he
wants them put in all of the elementary classrooms.

Appreciate any help, it does get confusing when researching the
various ones.

Are these N-draft cards? If so, we had an issue with those dealing
with fragmentation/RTS thresholds. We had some old b cards that did
not like large Frag/RTS thresholds so we had them set low. The N-
Draft cards do not like them that low and exhibit behavior similar
to what you are describing. So, to fix it we increased the
Fragmentation threshold to 2048 and the RTS threshold to 2049 and
now all is well with the N-draft cards. However, the old b cards no
longer function, which is mostly ok for us since we no longer use
those devices except for 1 old palm pilot to program the door locks.

Is there wireless software on them, like Belkin (?), or something
that is taking control of the wireless instead of the Windows

Provided is a link to a scanner that should detect the presence of the
Conficker worm. It comes from a link I trust so I believe it is
safe to run

on your networks. The tool can scan all the active computers on your
network for the worm.

FYI: here is the link threads
  http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=6097
  http://honeynet.org/node/388

---
Start by downloading
http://www.doxpara.com/scs.zip (This is a link from the
honeynet.org/node/388 page)
to a windows workstation.

Once downloaded extract the files. The extracted SCS folder contains
another SCS folder.
Move the second folder to the root of the C:\ drive so all the
files are in

C:\SCS
Open up a 'Command' prompt
type 'c:'
type 'cd \scs'
Scan the local machine first by typing:
'scanner localhost'
The results will show in the window when complete.
--
To scan the network, type:
'scs start-ip end-ip scslog.txt'
where start-ip is the lowest IP address you want to scan (10.147.0.1)
end-ip is the highest IP address you want to scan (10.147.0.254)
The results will be saved to c:\scs\scslog.txt
--
Note: When running 'scs.exe' it takes a long time to scan
unassigned IP
addresses. I would recommend that if you have a subnet mask of
255.255.0.0

that you run the program several times on ranges that you know have
computers. Check your DHCP server and verify the high and low IP
addresses
that are currently assigned to get your starting place. I would
also run

against server IP addresses.

If you run the program several times change the 'scslog.txt'
filename to a

unique name for every scan.

Another note:
When using the redirect '' all output that would typically show
on the
screen is redirected to the text file. Once you launch the 'scs'
command
the screen will not show anything. When the program is done the c:
\ prompt

will return.
---
Open the scslog.txt file with notepad to see the results of the scan.

The responses should be
no response - IP address
IP Address appears to be clean
IP address seems to be infected by Conficker

Good Luck

[info-tech] Microsoft Settlement for Mac License Purchases

2009-03-23 Thread A.Bloomquist
I received a phone call this afternoon from a DeElla with the
Microsoft Settlement to say that I would be receiving a report on our
License purchases.

She informed me that the Mac software licenses we purchased are not
eligible.

I wrote an email to John O'Connell and his reply said that he is not
involved in this part of the settlement but he said I known a number
of people who have received vouchers for Mac purchases.

Have any of your heard from Microsoft and do you know anything about
the Apple - Mac licenses not being eligible?

Wanted to check with any of you about this.

I do plan to call the Rust group handling this first thing tomorrow,

No confusion from my guy. He said that the proof I submitted the
first time around should be enough. They are just doing the VLs
purchased straight from MS first. They have rounds of claims
lettered. A,B,C. The Select Licenses are in round C which hasn't
happened yet according to the guy I talked with. Apparently
Licenses purchased under the Select Program were not supposed to be
listed under the Volume License section even though they are Volume
Licenses. We were supposed to list them under the individual
license section. Did it say that somewhere I missed?

I just heard back from the claims people for the Microsoft
Settlement. The reason I received a letter saying Microsoft could
not find any Volume License records is because all of our volume
licenses were purchased through someone else under the Select
Agreement(i.e. Software Plus), therefore, all of our Volume
Licenses will be on a second report yet to come. He had no ETA on
that report. I hope this information might help someone else, as I
was on hold for about 1 hour.

Again, they raise my hopes. However, I am bracing for yet more
disappointment.

Re: [info-tech] Laptop Carts

2009-01-27 Thread A.Bloomquist
We have two mobile labs in our elementary. One thing I have done is
to have a wireless access point set up on the cart itself. When the
mobile lab is in a classroom, the base is then connected to the
network in the classroom, thus keeping a strong signal for the mobile
lab.

There is also a printer on the cart connected to the access point to
provide for printing to be done in the classroom where the lab is
located.

Just info to share for what it is worth.

Re: [info-tech] Laptops Carts

2009-01-27 Thread A.Bloomquist

Mitch,

Questions for you to consider are: Who will really be using the
mobile lab in the high school? What laptops will you put in the
mobile lab? How will the mobile lab be scheduled?

As I shared in my previous response, we have two mobile labs in the
elementary with ibooks. These were from grants that I received.
They are primarily in the second grade classrooms as those teachers
have shown their use of them.

We have had a mobile lab in the junior high with ibooks but they did
not hold up well with the student use. This also was from a grant.
They were used for keyboarding because of a lack of regular lab
time. That has been changed.

Just need to consider where, why and how a mobile lab is used before
moving in that direction.

Hope this helps. Can't say what you should do, each situation can be
different.

Karl,

Would it be possible to get a copy of the questions being asked? Or at
least an idea of what it is assessing?

The reason I ask is that we did ours in-house and I am wondering how
ours compares to theirs. I realize that, potentially, every district
could be different, but if I had a good idea that would be great. I
was
not able to attend those info-tech meetings in person; otherwise I
would

probably not have to ask this question.

Thanks,

OK so we just finished taking the TLA here are South Hamilton. Three
labs, 56 kids all at once. It took 10 minutes to start the test
(loading and logging in to learning.com), but once the tests were
going it only took about 20 minutes for most to complete them. Now I
will wait 24 hours to see what the reports look like.

I agree with Chad.

I just want to see what is asked, not to copy.

If you are not comfortable with this Keith, that is okay also.

Re: [info-tech] Public/Community Member use of School Computer Labs?

2008-05-01 Thread A.Bloomquist

Lance,

Since you allow public use of your computer labs, do you know what
they are using the labs for?

Can they use the labs for anything? Does the use of the computer
labs need to be for education or can it be for commerce, etc.?

They pay custodial and room fees, go through the filter. Same as

[info-tech] Public/Community Member use of School Computer Labs?

2008-04-30 Thread A.Bloomquist

Hi,

Would like your help with these questions:

Does your school allow a group of adults to use the School Computer
Labs?

If this is allowed, are there any guidelines, supervision, AUPs, etc?

Does anyone have a policy concerning the use of the School Computer
Labs by members of the public/community?

We need to clarify this situation for our district.

Thanks for your help,

Ann Bloomquist

Re: [info-tech] Tech Meeting Today in Storm Lake

2007-04-19 Thread A.Bloomquist

Scott,

I am actually listening to the Tech Meeting. Streaming it on my
MacBook Pro using the Parrellels program for the Windows side.

I have good sound but not video. Any ideas?

This is okay for today but would like to have this work better for
other times.

Couldn't follow everything about the HP computers when I don't see
anything.

Plus, you techies sure are having a lot of fun up there and I miss
that. Maybe next time. Hard to get away these days with so much to do.

Hi to everyone.

Thanks,

Ann

PS - Will appreciate the info from this meeting, including the
