install on your own, YOU are the only person to go to. When you are talking
about wireless you are talking mission critical stuff especially if you are
a 1:1. I had an issue with our XIrrus arrays and they flew an engineer from
Arizona the next day to fix it on THEIR dime. One of the things I learned
VERY early is that you need to be able to put a value on your time, and for

school on regular bases to set it up and maintain it.

Have looked at Xirrus and Aruba and unless you have plenty of time on
your hands and just love complexity steer clear of Aruba. Xirrus is cool
but their prices indicate that they know that. Any other ideas?

1 - At what grade do you start giving students Internet access?
Our elementaries would like to not have to log in to computers as special
internet accounts, they just want the Internet to work for them. Our current
practice would require someone to log the computer in with an account that
would have Internet access. I assume that whatever your situation is, you
expect the teacher to still supervise their use.

2 - At what grade do you start giving kids their own personal

grades pk-3 get a shared home folder -- grades 4-12 get home folder
3 - Facebook. We have 3 interested groups ready and wanting to
create a Facebook group or a Facebook Page for their specific group. We have
talked about privacy, and what kids post about themselves there and how we as
District employees are mandatory reporters. From my limited playing of
Facebook, I cannot limit access to specific facebook site, it is either give
them (staff only, not students) access to Facebook or not. All or none. Their
thinking in wanting to create a Facebook page is because that is what the kids
are doing, when they aren't at school. My concern is the privacy and lost work
time with people maintaining their personal Facebook, Mafia War or Farm Town
creation. Give me your thought, the discussions you have had, and we can kind
of go from there.
we use lightspeed to define groups/time schedules and do some periodic release
on some sites also but it is all getting to be quite a pain -- i don't know the
answer to all of this -- i only know that the web is full of useful information
and also so full of garbage that i don't know how one can open it all up or try
to lock it down
i wonder how many of the great speakers you hear telling us to open things up

I have moved my Intermapper system to our server room to ensure continued
monitoring in the event of a power outage in Fort Dodge. With the move I
have also changed the IP address and port number of the Intermapper Web
server.

In an effort to bring all technical resources together to one spot I have
also been working on a new website portal for you to access Intermapper and
other tools. The Web Portal is still a work in process but does currently
have links to our Trouble Ticket System, as well as Intermapper.

To access the Technology Web Portal go to the URL

From the portal page you will be able to access Intermapper.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

We have a committee that meets when needed during the year (maybe three times).
It has teachers and administrators from each building and also the supt. We
discuss technology that is used in the classroom, problems/concerns, and also
where we would like to go in the future. It is called the technology
committee. Members will also be used to introduce new technology in their
building when rolled out.

they work? How often do you meet? I feel I need a buy in of staff

Thanks-- and happy holidays to everyone. I hope you enjoy your break!

For those who are looking for a time saving application, I would suggest using
Google Apps. I attended a Webinar yesterday about it and watch a school with
7000 students and 1500 staff in 5 different buildings migrate to it. Started
with the students for the first year and now going on their second year and
migrating their staff to it. I have two video links attached for those
interest. Trust me, this a very good tools to try out and your students and
staff will enjoy it very much. I had to work with Scott a little on it but
just for the email part. Best part of all, it FREE!

Karl, was your 7-12 building Apple before you went 1:1?

 Karl Hehr karl_h...@s-hamilton.k12.ia.us 9/9/2009 5:23 PM
So far there are lots of positives to the 1:1. We started a 1:1 here at South
Hamilton this year. We went with MacBooks for all the students 7-12 (about
380). The most important thing in ANY 1:1 is professional development, the more
the better. If you can start now do so. One of the things we liked about Apple
was the PD that we were able to have that showed our staff how to use the tools
and create truly integrated lessons. Insurance is another big deal, work for
the best possible price for you and your users. One of the bad things is just
the sheer amount of work, there is a BIG increase in work so anything you can
do to streamline the process is going to be a big help. Also don't expect 100%
buy-in, you will not get it. I think 1:1 would be a great topic for a future
tech coord meeting, since NF and SH are both 1:1 (Apple) and Poky (HP) will be
1:1 next year from what I hear. There are lots of things to consider, far more
than anything that can be put into an email. Last bit of advice for now, visit
as many schools doing 1:1 that you can, go to NF, go to West Side in Omaha.
Also any other question I know I would be happy to answer.

Are most of you still using the network printers, or are you moving
towards the network copiers? We are still running the 4100's, which work
fine...I am just wondering if it is worth the upgrade to phase those out
with some of the network copiers (running fewer print stations in the
buildings)-similar to when I made the switch from desk jets to the
4100's.

Hopw about color? Right now we have one in each building
(4050/4600)--they are so slow; but I'm not sure if itsk worth
upgrading...

for your schools. How do you do that? I could have saved almost $120

on my most recent printer part but eBay was not an option. The most
important piece of this is how do you PAY for things on eBay for
school? Do you use a school credit card? Send a check? Pay for it
yourself and then get reimbursed? These questions were not answered on

Everyone-

We are running a Sonicwall 3060 with enhanced firmware, and have
had a secondary Internet connection for 3 or 4 years now. We
currently
have a 5MB Ethernet connection from the ICN, as well as a 5MB Ethernet
connection from our local phone company. Other than Lance's note
about
have to restart the Sonicwall to get back to full operating strength
on
both connections, it is awesome. You never even know when one link
goes
down, as the Sonicwall just routes everything out the other link. We
will never go back to having one single connection.

The only other thing to think about, in our configuration, and
end user can really only burst into a 5MB connection, since they are 2
different connections, but depending on the situation, that works
better.

We originally were doing this on our Fortigate, but at that time
it would not allow for load balancing over the links. Scott and I
have
had those discussions, so I don't know if that problem has been
rectified or not. That was the reason we moved to a Sonicwall 3060.

If anyone need any more information, ask away. Otherwise, happy
Easter everyone!!!

Jeremy

Not sure if this was directed at me, but we don't get a break for
our second line. But, we were to the point where we were going to need
10 MB of Internet, so we went 5 and 5. I believe we are paying about
$900 or month or so before ERate on our Frontier Ethernet Connection,
and whatever the ICN and AEA costs are for our ICN Ethernet Connection.
We are paying more than if we just had a 10 MB ICN connection, but we
have never (watch me eat these words now) been without Internet since we
have had the Sonicwall 3060 and two Internet Connections.

  One question...
How much do you pay for the second connection that you rarely use?
Does IATelecom give you a break?

Everyone-

We are running a Sonicwall 3060 with enhanced firmware, and have
had a secondary Internet connection for 3 or 4 years now. We
currently
have a 5MB Ethernet connection from the ICN, as well as a 5MB Ethernet

connection from our local phone company. Other than Lance's note
about
have to restart the Sonicwall to get back to full operating strength on

both connections, it is awesome.

Sounds like a very simple, easy method to scanning multiple choice tests. The

RE: Microsoft Settlement Cy Pres Update

This memo is to provide you with a brief update regarding both the Volume
License notification letters and the Cy Pres program.

VOLUME LICENSE
The Volume Licenses program was open to anyone who purchased Microsoft
Software during the prescribed period covered by the settlement. The date
of the final settlement was August 31, 2007. District had to file their
claims before December 14, 2007.

During a recent conference call, I was informed that Rust Consulting has
sent over 800 of the nearly 1200 volume licenses notification letters to
various governmental agencies. This group includes school districts and
AEAs. The remainder of the letters should be mailed by February 1, 2009.
Members of this group will receive Volume Licensee Vouchers which can be
used for reimbursement on purchases made after April 25, 2007 of any brand
of qualifying computer hardware or software. You can redeem your Volume
Licensee Vouchers for all or part of the price you paid for any purchases of
the following computer products: Any desktop, laptop, or tablet computers
made by any manufacturer for any operating system platform, or any of the
following devices: printers, scanners, monitors, keyboards, or pointing
devices (e.g. mouse, trackball). Qualifying software includes any non-custom
software offered by any software vendor for use on a desktop, laptop or
tablet computer. The qualifying computer hardware or software does not have
to be a Microsoft product. Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) or other
handheld devices, many peripheral (cables, speakers, or other external
device, etc.) and components (internal or external storage units, internal
or external CD-Rom/DVD or other read/write devices, zip drives, tape backup
or storage units, memory, video, or audio cards, motherboards, or CPUs,
etc.) are excluded from the products to which Volume Licensee Vouchers may
be applied. Class members whose total claim is $950 or more must purchase a
computer in order to use Volume Licensee Vouchers for printers, scanners,
monitors, keyboards and pointing devices. More than one Volume Licensee
Voucher can be used for a single purchase. See product Eligibility list for
a more complete list of products. If you have any questions, CALL
1-877-477-0960 OR VISIT www.iowaschoolmicrosoftsettlement.com for more
information.

If the district/agency accepts the notification letter amount of the
reimbursement, they sign the letter and return it. If you do not accept the
letter's amount, the district/agency has 60 days to file additional
information to Rust. This additional information will be reviewed Rust and
a second letter will be sent. The district /agency will have 30 days to
file additional information if they disagree with the second letter.
Estimated final date for the conclusion of the program is July 1, 2009.
This is a tentative date.

CY PRES program Update

According to the settlement, this program is open to qualifying K-12 public
schools in Iowa. A complete list of eligible school buildings is available
on the Department's web site. Once the volume license program has
concluded, the final amount of money available under the Cy Pres program
will be known. As mentioned above the tentative date is currently July 1,
2009.

The application for this program will be available on the secure Department's
website (www.edinfo.state.ia.us) from April 15 to May 15, 2009. School
districts must file for eligible building. A draft of the application will
be available on the Department's web site by March 1, 2009. The list of
eligible software and hardware is posted on the settlement's web site
(www.iowaschoolmicrosoftsettlement.com). If you have any questions regarding
the eligible product list, CALL 1-877-477-0960 OR VISIT the above site for
more information. One problem with the list is that sometimes specific
products are mentioned e.g. HP 6320 Notebook PC, while later in the list
Laptop computers are mentioned below that New Laptop, then New Laptop
computers. In reality any laptop is likely eligible. If in doubt, call or
write and ask the claims administrator. If you are wrong and the claims
administrator rejects your claim for an ineligible product

Re: [info-tech] MAP testing question

2009-01-21 Thread Brad Kruse
I had the same problem a few years ago. After exporting from JMC, I
just remove all teacher ids within Excel and replace with one identical
teacher for all records within each building.
ex.: mnw_hs_teacher, mnw_ms_teacher, mnw_elem_teacher
We have never used the reports tracking back to the teachers so it is a
waste of time for us.

Hi, everyone! I have a question for those of you using MAP
testing . . .

After uploading our data (and combining all buildings)--I received an

error message that we have teachers who have the same ID's. This
makes sense, since in each building there is a teacher assigned as
teacher 1, 2, etc. --which results in 5 teachers having the same
ID's for the most part. Are there any problems/ramifications you
could think of with assigning different numbers to teachers than what

they are listed as in JMC? I was told by NWEA that I cannot upload
each building separately--but it's kind of hard to go in and assign
different teacher ID's in JMC this year with the effect that would
have on schedules/grades, etc. Do I need to try and assign a number
that the teacher could have, say next year if I make those changes in

JMC, or could I just randomly assign numbers in the upload file that
won't affect anything. We will only be testing once this year.

Hope this makes sense. I appreciate any advice from those who have
been there!
Enjoy the day!

Good to hear from you again George. Hope things are going well in
retirement. Enjoy your trip!
I am still using the Linksys WAP's as they perform well for what we
need. Just ordered another one last week. I can't believe they still
sell the same model. I also have used one of the storage servers in a
local business network. They work great and are a simple, inexpensive
network storage solution.

we're going south by South Padre Island for a couple of weeks.

I've got a different request. Some of you have replaced your access
points with the new managed high volume wireless systems. If anybody has
any Linksys WAP 54g access points they would like to get rid of, let me
know how many and what price.

PS: If you want to try something simple for remote access and storage,
I've been using a MAXTOR Central Axis server for a couple of months. Its
cheap and easy to give network access or internet access. It's a lot
easier to manage than Sharepoint or some of the other services. Great
for all kinds of back ups too. It comes with a well designed software
package. I think most of your staff with a little training could set up
class sharing, etc. And for both Jon and Lance, it works with PC's and
MAC's. One terabyte of storage which can be expanded by attaching
another terabyte drive. The central server is $218 and you can buy
another terabyte for around $120. 5 year warranty. Worth taking a look
at for those unusual applications where you don't want to put stuff on
your central servers.

Re: [info-tech] mounting projector debate rages on

2008-08-04 Thread Brad Kruse

We bought three Samsung 40" LCD TVs from CDWG this summer and placed them on a cart along with a 15' VGA cable and HDMI DVD player. Less than $1,100 for everything. Easy to setup and can be moved easily. They are crystal clear and can be seen from the back of a normal sized classroom. We are going to talk about what to do in the future later this fall with input from the teachers that have had mounted projectors, projectors on their cart, and the LCD solution. We will then decide whether to go with Smartboards or one of the other options for all classrooms needing projection for thenext year.

At one time, somebody mentioned they were switching to LCD's instead of projectors.
If anybody has purchased LCD's for the classroom, I have a few questions.
What size is appropriate for a 25 student classroom?
What vendor are you using (IEC?)
Is mounting the TV an additional cost?

I am wondering is if anyone out there has had experience with DVD-camcorders

not be able to duplicate from the small DVDs that go in the camcorder to the

Yes, I have thought about both of those issues. Currently, they all
have a 27 + tv on a cart now that would no longer be needed. so I
assume it would just take up the space used now. It would then become
more of a fixed display with cable tv, computer, dvd, vcr connected to
it with the ability to display photos from camera sd card, etc.

Brad,

The only issue I see with that is wall space. Most of the projectors we
have are pointed at the main whiteboard for projection. If you add a tv
you will obviously need wall space unless you are putting it on a cart
of some sort. If you’re going to do that, how does one strap a flat
screen to a cart? I have never looked into that.

George Tuttle [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2/15/2008 1:14 PM
Lance,

The answer is to grow more hair You will be pulling out more hair as
long as you are supplying technology to students and teachers. When I started
working with computers in 1981, Apple II+ computers replaced the DEC terminals
that we were using to teach programming. Many of you have not written a line of
code because our whole system has changed in 25 years. The first word
processors were code editors. For many years I taught computer classes
involving the use of word processors, databases, and spread sheets. Did I know
what I was doing, probably not. I was the computer teacher. It took some
convincing to get our business teachers to throw out the Selectrics and go with
the new technology. Some of you may remember the long struggle we had to get
the staff to use computers. Since then, the new technologies have moved into
every aspect of education, including evaluation and record-keeping. We went
out, chased the car, caught it, and now don't know what to do with it.
To me, if a teacher asks to have some old computers in the back of the
room, isn't that what you want? They're probably trying to implement one of
your school board's long term goals, incorporating technology into the
curriculum. The real problem is that most tech person's do not have enough time
to keep your high-tech network systems up and running and at the same time,
support the class room teacher.
Since retiring in June I've been doing the computer tech work for our local
catholic school. We have a very simple network that requires little or no
support so I have the time to help class room teachers. I was able to focus
again on the real reason for technology in school, aiding the education of
students by helping the faculty. For a number of years I got lost in the
glitziness of the emerging technologies and thought that the latest and
greatest was the most important to education. Since I was a class room teacher
for many years before my techie life, it has been easier for me to go back
and re-assess the application of technology in education. As a techie, I tried
to have the technology dog wag its education tail rather than vice-versa.
Does having the latest and greatest make your school a success. Probably
not. Does NOT having the latest and greatest make your school a failure.
Probably not. What makes a school a success is how the application of
technology is used to affect student outcomes. Several years ago, I attended a
meeting where a large school district in South Dakota gave a laptop to each of
their high school students to use. When asked to show how this had a positive
impact on educational results, he moved on to another topic. Later on he did
say that the students really liked having their own laptops. Give me one and I
will give you the same answer.
This is my venting. There's an old proverb: Observe history or you're
doomed to repeat it.

[info-tech] camcorders

The last time we bought (over a year ago) camcorders, we purchased ten digital

Vicki,

we use the JMC module. Immunizations and other stuff (that is a technical
definition by the way) are input by our School Nurse. She is awesome by the way
and she once diagnosed my eye ulcer.

Eye ulcers are very painful things. If you have never had one, I hope that you
never get one. IT is all better now, however my ears are still ringing from the
concert I attended on Monday night. Velvet Revolver is for now, the loudest
concert I have ever attended.

So how about those Patriots, I truly think that there is no comparison between
them and the 76 Dolphins. I mean come on Larry Csonka weighed in at what 175
and the Linebackers then were about 215. IT is no comparison to the athleticism
of today's NFL athletes. To go undefeated in the NFL today is a much greater
feat than to have done so in 76.

But I digress. Vicki, we use JMC Health Module, and we like it.

Good morning! Quick question for a Tuesday:

We switched our mail server two weeks ago, and when we went to send
out a mass e-mail, it didn't work. Our POP 3 account is
asmtp.algona.k12.ia.us; and on our local mail clients we had to mark
use authentication. So I went into the administrator settings in
JMC, and entered the POP 3 server in the SMTP settings, checked the
use authentication box, and entered my e-mail username and pw in the
appropriate boxes (which is what JMC also thought made sense). When I
went to send an e-mail to my random family . . . I got the dreaded
spinning wheel and an unknown error message that it can't send out to
me. Before I call for tech. help again, I'm just curious if anyone
else has had the same problem/knows and easy fix. Thanks, and hope
everyone has a great holiday!

All,
I am curious as to what other school districts policies are concerning the use
of Jump / Flash drives on school computers. Is this allowed by students /
staff? Do you have specific polices in place for their use?
How are executables installed on these devices handled so they are not run on

I have staff asking about the use of these and I am reluctant to allow them so
far.

Thank you

[info-tech] School Website Outsourcing

Is anyone outsourcing their district website?
I would like to hear the good and the bad if anyone has done this in the past
and also the name of the business that is used. Currently, I have some
independent study students that help me along with a few coaches and
secretaries that do their part. We have a publications class here but they
only work with the newsletter and yearbook. We are constantly relying on the
website for more each week and it is really becoming a burden. I really would
like to add more features but I don't know enough and don't want to know

Brad,
We publish to an offline site where the student’s info is
reviewed before publishing to our “live” site. I think everyone is
having the same problem of trying to do more on our website and not
having the time or expertise to do it. If anyone has tried to maintain a
website, they soon find out that it is time-consuming and not everyone
has the design talent to do it properly. If schools want an effective
website, they need to realize that it is not “free”.

On Friday I received a mailer telling me that I am part of a class action lawsuit (I will keep my opinions of class action suits to myself). Any-whose, I am in a bit of a pickle as to whether or not to remove the school from the suit.

Reasoning

Microsoft has always given great pricing to schools on software

The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is committed to technology in education

We arepredominantly Apple based

I don't want to upset the applecart

So I am asking the collective group, what your opinions and choices will be with this lawsuit.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Good question as we have had to suspend some students from using the
Internet and network for punishment and it does add more work for the
teachers as they have to come up with some other plan for the student.

We still require permission to be signed off by the parent; the AUP

the HS and MS handbooks preceding the signature page for both
students

parents

A few questions as our tech committee is about to meet...1. Do you allow students to access private email accounts...HotMail, Yahoo, etc. on school computers, during school hours?No2. If not, what is the reasoning?Teachers found it distracting.3. If yes what is the reasoning?4. Do you offer school based email accounts for all high school students (9-12 or a mixture of) which the school sets up and manages (such as for classes, online classes, college classes, etc.?Yes, the guidance counseleor submits them to me to add. We used to give all HS students accts. but we have limited it to only students needing for ICCC classes and online classes. SPAM/virus software is licensed by how many email acct. established so we started limiting it.
5. If you do not allow it, do you deal with it by blocking access or or as part of a user agreement. Thanks in advanceBrian WeidenthalerSouth Hamilton Schools---[This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us]-Archived messages from this list can be found at:http://www.mail-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/-

We use the latest version of Novell Zenworks (ver#7)that allows for this and also collects inventory on each system in the district. All I have to do is open the computer within the directory and I can either view the screen without their knowledge or control it remotely. Just recently started taking advantage of some of the extra's within this software. Next, I am going to work with imaging the systems with Zenworks. Zenworks is also a cross-platform product that works with Active Directory.

Generally, district productivity software, such as Office, Publisher, Acrobat, etc. are paid out of my technology funds. Teacher requests for specific grade level or department level software comes from their budget. If it is expensive or will cover several dept or grades, I make an exception.Regardless, teachers must complete an official requisition, submit it to the Principal and then to me. I will then have a conversation with the teachers about the purpose of the software and how it fixes into instruction. I had one teacher who wanted to purchase 25 copies of a program at $100 each to do a one day supplimental activity for her class. She thought that I should buy it. She thought differently when she found out it was coming out of her budget. I suggested that she purchase one copy, use a data projector and do it as a class activity.John KidneyWebster City -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf of Pendry, Charlton Sent: Tue 9/6/2005 1:55 PM To: info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us Cc: Subject: [info-tech] software purchasing[Scanned] How do you guys handle requests from individual teachers for software purchases? Vicki,

We offer a class in website publishing using Front Page.
They are responsible for our school website. The students are given
assignments and then they save it to an unpublished website. The
instructor reviews it and then publishes it to the viewable website.
It's not the best website but it accomplishes the dual tasks of being
an
educational experience and also as the school website. When I look at
it and I think it could be a lot better, I hold my tongue for two
reasons, number 1, I don't want to do it, and more importantly, we
are,
after-all, an educational institution. Once in awhile I'll hear a
comment about the website from the public about a link not working
quite
right. I tell them that it is done by students and who are just
learning. They understand and are glad to see that students are
actually doing the work as part of an educational experience.

The easiest thing would be to hire some one else to do it.
Our administration and school board chose to have our students
responsible for our website, fully aware that it may not be perfect.
You may want to visit with your administration and school board about
it. As a former educator for 37 years, I would recommend that you
take
advantage of the educational opportunity if you can.

George

PS We host our website on our own server.

[info-tech] Notebook Computer Carts

2005-01-12 Thread Brad Kruse

Does anyone have a suggestion for a 15 to 20 notebook computer cart that includes electrical outlets for recharging and a place for setting a printer?
I have looked at Bretford but wondering if someone has used something in their district that works good but that is not so expensive.
We received two of the Star Schools grants (I think we were the only ones left to not receive one yet) for wireless notebook labs in the elem and middle school.

Also, to answer the question about tech budgetsour budget for MNWhas been averagingabout $35,000.

[info-tech] auditorium projector

2004-02-27 Thread Brad Kruse

We installed a new lighting and sound system in our auditorium and want to add a projection device also. We want to drop this down from ceiling about12 feet and project to a drop down screen(approx. 12 x 12) from about 25 feet away.
I am sure some of you have done this to your auditorium and I wondering if you could help me out with avendor or solution. I have visited with Rick's some on this but they told me they have not had much experience with this type of projection but is looking into it for us.
